‘Great marine park’ created Pilbara Dental Care at Eighty Mile Beach Natural and cultural values of the pristine Eighty Mile Beach will be better protected with the official creation of a new marine park. Environment Minister Bill Marmion said the newly created Eighty Mile Beach Marine Park was a key component of the Liberal National Government’s $63 million Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy. “The announcement [on Tuesday] follows on from [Monday’s] commitment to establish new Class A marine and national parks to provide the highest level of protection to the worldrenowned Horizontal Falls at Talbot Bay in the Kimberley,” he said. “Eighty Mile Beach is a popular destination for visitors to the Kimberley to enjoy fishing, camping, four-wheel driving and wildlife viewing. “The new marine park extends throughout almost 210,000 hectares from about 30 kilometres west of Cape Keraudren in the south to 10 kilometres south of Cape Missiessy in the north-east. “About 71 per cent of the marine park will be in general-use zones, where commercial and recreational activities can occur. “About a quarter of the park’s key habitats will be protected in sanctuary zones, while a further four per cent will be in recreational or special purpose zones where some activities will be restricted. “Once again, the Liberal National Government has recognised the need to balance conservation with recreational and commercial use of the marine environment. “Key fishing areas for the worldrenowned South Sea Pearl industry have been kept open for pearlers, and

recreational fishers will continue to have access to 75 per cent of the marine park, including the popular beach area adjacent to Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park.” The Minister said the new park included part of the internationally recognised Eighty Mile Beach Ramsar Site, which is listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. It has extensive intertidal sand and mudflats that support a rich diversity and abundance of wildlife. The marine park is also home to a number of other marine species and communities including sawfish, dugongs, dolphins, seagrass meadows, coral reefs and mangroves. It also contains significant Aboriginal cultural and heritage values. The marine park will be jointly managed by the Traditional Owners, including the Karajarri, Nyangumarta and Ngarla people, and the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC). “For the first time in any marine park or reserve in Western Australia, new special purpose (cultural heritage) zones have been included in the zoning scheme,” Mr Marmion said. “This represents a new phase in joint management of conservation reserves with Traditional Owners and will provide specific recognition for sites of high Aboriginal cultural significance.” The announcement to create a marine park at Eighty Mile Beach presents a big win for the Kimberley’s marine environment. WWF-Australia spokesperson Paul Gamblin said the new park would form a key piece in the puzzle for a future network of marine protected areas that the Kimberley’s marine life so

‘Commendable’ long weekend ruined by burglary spree By Tamara Binamat

graffiti the car, as shown in the picture.

Although police commended partygoer’s behaviour over the Australia Day long weekend, there was a number of vehicle thefts and burglaries in the Karratha area.

Police are reminding residents to lock your cars.

Karratha Police received numerous calls regarding thefts at Baynton, Nickol and Millars Well. The reports concerned home intrusions and valuables stolen from unlocked vehicles. In one case, offenders walked through an unlocked door at a property in Nickol where they stole valuables and car keys. The offenders stole a vehicle from the front of the property, and pushed it from the driveway to the street where they could not start the car. The offenders then proceeded to

The brazen burglary spike comes two weeks after Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan announced the formation of a specialist unit to tackle a rise in motor vehicle theft across Western Australia. Commissioner O’Callaghan said 15 detectives and technical staff have been appointed to commence work immediately at the newly formed Vehicle Crime Unit. Vehicle theft across the State has increased by 22 per cent this financial year and in recent months there has been a rise of almost 70 per cent in this crime. A significant number of the stolen vehicles have not been recovered.

Workers on a mine site in the Pilbara have been awarded $18,964 in unpaid redundancy entitlements.

“The employer was cooperative with FWBC and reimbursed the six workers the required amount.

The six workers on the Solomon Mine Project were employed by a subcontractor at the mine.

“FWBC has recovered $726,293 for 510 workers in Australia’s construction industry since we began operations on 1 June 2012.

“An investigation by Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors determined that the six employees had not been paid the required amount of redundancy entitlements,” Mr Johns said.

“Please remember to lock your cars, Karratha Police received numerous calls over the weekend from people who had valuables stolen from their unlocked vehicles.

“The mistake occurred because the employer did not fully understand its obligations and unintentionally miscalculated the amounts it owed to the six workers.

Of that amount, $133,899 was recovered for 77 workers in Western Australia. “The scope of construction work currently being undertaken in the Pilbara region, in particular, is aweinspiring. “It’s imperative that industrial relations practices on these major projects are running smoothly and I urge all employers in the Pilbara to get in contact with us if they are not sure about how much they should be paying their workers.”

Tidy Towns registrations now open The start of a new year is a great time to plan ahead and with registrations now open for the 2013 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities awards program, communities can get more out of their efforts to improve the environment they live in. Keep Australia Beautiful Council WA Chair Mel Hay said the awards are about acknowledging regional communities who foster sustainable ways of living and a litter-free environment. “Over the years we have seen many great projects undertaken as part of the Tidy Towns program that have benefited communities in a range of ways,” he said. “It is no surprise that there is continued strong support for Tidy Towns. “As well as helping to motivate and initiate local action, the program recognises community efforts and it gives participants an opportunity to engage with and learn from others. “It is clear from feedback that this involvement fosters community pride. “Other benefits include the improvements resulting from the projects undertaken, increased

awareness of issues such as litter prevention, improved waste management, conserving water and energy and protecting local bushland.” Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities is open to all regional towns and communities. There are eight categories in the awards: community action and partnerships, general appearance, waste management and litter prevention, natural environment conservation, heritage and culture, water conservation, energy innovation, and young legends. Communities can enter one, or all of the categories. Registrations are now open and close on March 1 and project submissions are due by June 1. Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities is a Keep Australia Beautiful program. To register online visit www.kabc. wa.gov.au/programs/tidy-towns/onlineregistration.html. For more information about the Tidy Towns program contact Gail Dodd on 6467 5131 or email tidytowns@dec. wa.gov.au.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”

Funding increase set for regional and Indigenous arts A Regional Arts Discussion Paper has been launched this week, aimed at increasing investment into regional and Indigenous arts. Leader of The Nationals WA and Candidate for Pilbara, Brendon Grylls said The Nationals WA would boost funding by up to $16 million over four years. The funding would support regional and Indigenous arts and cultural groups, entertainment centres, and individual projects, should the party retain the balance of power following the State election. “This discussion paper recognises the very important role that the arts and culture play in our regional communities,” Mr Grylls said. “As well as offering a cultural and entertainment outlet, a vibrant arts scene provides social opportunities, enhanced tourism, and creates opportunities to learn and develop skills.” Mr Grylls said The Nationals WA would work with grassroots organisations, Indigenous art centres, and key bodies such as Country Arts WA to boost funding for regional arts. “We will build on existing funding for regional arts organisations, including Indigenous art centres and smaller arts and cultural groups to enable them to continue to contribute to the vibrancy,

liveability and identity regional WA,” he said.

of

“Groups like Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery, Martumilli Artists and Gwoonwardu Mia would be among the beneficiaries.” Member for the North West, Vince Catania said the Regional Arts discussion paper was building on previous arts funding supported by Royalties for Regions including the $40 million Regional Event Scheme, which is delivering arts and cultural projects across the State. The discussion paper will also establish a framework for ongoing funding for regional arts and entertainment centres across the State. “The Nationals will seek to provide recurrent operational funding towards supporting regional entertainment and arts centres, in line with the support the State Government currently offers to arts and entertainment centres in the metropolitan area, such as the Perth Concert Hall,” Mr Catania said. Mr Catania said The Nationals WA will seek input from local arts groups, Indigenous art centres, the public and Local Governments on this discussion paper to help stimulate a transition in overall arts funding in regional WA. The Regional Arts Discussion Paper can be viewed online at www.nationalswa.com.

$4.8m to attract education workers Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls has announced State Government Royalties for Regions funding of $4.8 million to support attraction and retention in education fields in the Pilbara. Mr Grylls said the program was aimed at attracting and retaining the highest quality education professionals to support improved education outcomes in the Pilbara. “The Pilbara Cities vision is about creating sustainable cities where families want to live,” he said. “A key aspect in achieving this is having high quality education and high quality professionals delivering it.” “There are four elements to the program aimed at providing support to teachers, recent graduates and undergraduates.” The four elements of the program include employing Pilbara specialist coaches, rural and remote training schools project, supporting schools and teacher internship programs as well as

Wildlife watch: Little red kaluta

Police commend public after state-wide operation WA Police are commending the public’s behaviour during the various celebrations held for Australia Day 2013. Commander Murray Smalpage praised the general public for their behaviour during last weekend’s events. “The message about responsible alcohol consumption seems to be having an effect and the community has come together to celebrate the spirit of our country without any significant issues,” Mr Smalpage said. “We did however see a small increase in the number of people charged for Excess 0.08% and DUI, which shows while the behaviour of people at the events was good, some may need to consider how they get to and from those events if they plan to drink.”

The Little Red Kaluta (Dasykaluta rosamondae), also known as the Little Red Antechinus, Russet Antechinus, Spinifex Antechinus or simply Kaluta, is a carnivorous nocturnal marsupial. The Little Red Kaluta lives in the dry areas of Western Australia. Individuals are 9-11 centimetres long and weigh 20-40 grams. Kaluta is an Aboriginal name for this species, and this is reflected in the generic name Dasykaluta, which means “Hairy Kaluta”. The species name, rosamondae, is a reference to the famous mistress of Henry II of England, who is said to have had red hair. The Little Red Kaluta is a rufous brown colour with fairly coarse fur. In body shape, it is generally similar to the antechinuses, although it has a shorter head and ears. It is also somewhat smaller than these animals.

The Little Red Kaluta feeds on insects and small vertebrates. A notable habit is flicking its tail in the air as it investigates its habitat. Male Little Red Kalutas, like several other dasyurid species, die shortly after the September breeding season, probably due to stress.

Pilbara Wildlife Carers Association

The young are born after a pregnancy of around seven weeks, and are weaned when around four-months-old. The Little Red Kaluta, who occupies spinifex grassland, is found in the Pilbara and Little Sandy Desert in Western Australia, where it is moderately common.

Funding to improve support services for FIFO families WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan is pledging $150,000 to the Foothills Information and Referral Service (FIRS) to establish and assist in the funding of a flyin, fly-out liaison coordinator. Mr McGowan said WA Labor would also support the introduction of compulsory ‘social impact statements’, similar to environmental impact statements on all significant resource project approvals, to manage the social problems associated with fly-in, fly-out and remote employment. “The success of our State’s resource industry has seen the number of fly-in, fly-out workers in Western Australia grow significantly over the past decade,” Mr McGowan said. “This growth will continue over the next decade, meaning more and more workers will spend an extended period at the workplace followed by a period at home. “While many families find the FIFO

arrangements suit their needs and they are happy, healthy families, for some families this work cycle presents very difficult challenges. “It can also impact on the workplace, affecting worker productivity and safety. “The isolation from family and loneliness of working in remote areas can also have a devastating effect on the mental health of fly-in fly-out workers.” Suicide prevention group OzHelp estimates suicide rates among mining and construction workers to be up to 70 per cent higher than the national average. “WA Labor believes better support services would result in fewer family breakdowns, fewer suicides and improvements in worker retention and productivity,” Mr McGowan said. “The most significant form of support sought by fly-in, fly-out families is social support, in particular a strong social network to rely on as a coping mechanism.

“This is why WA Labor will provide a grant of $150,000 to the Foothills Information and Referral Service to establish and assist in the funding of a flyin, fly-out liaison coordinator.” FIRS proposed a program where a staff member was employed for the specific purpose of identifying fly-in, flyout families, developing programs and linking fly-in, fly-out families with existing community programs and services. “This fly-in, fly-out liaison coordinator would also be responsible for advising other community organisations about how they may adapt their programs to suit the particular needs of fly-in, fly-out families,” Mr McGowan said. “WA Labor will also support the introduction of compulsory ‘social impact statements’ for significant mining projects. “WA Labor believes that while the State Government has a role to play in addressing the social issues of fly-in, flyout workforces, mining companies should also be prepared to take on this responsibility and shoulder some of the cost. “While many mining companies recognise this is an important issue and offer employee support programs and induction sessions, the practice should be more widespread.” Mr McGowan said the statements would include: •

Projections of likely impacts and propose mitigation strategies for responsible employment strategies

• McGowan has promised WA Labor will provide a grant of $150,000 to the Foothills Information and Referral Service •

Strategies of engagement with local governments and local communities in which the mining operations are located

Address the social problems associated with FIFO and remote employment, such as increased rates of family breakdown, mental illness and suicide

“Approximately 52 per cent of the 92,000 workers employed in the resource industry are fly-in, fly-out workers and of those, 50 per cent are married with children,” Mr McGowan said. “WA Labor will make addressing the social problems associated with fly-in, fly-out and remote employment, such as increased rates of family breakdown, mental illness and suicide, a priority.”

Upgrade to West Pilbara water supply Works to upgrade the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme (WPWSS) will begin next month providing more water security to Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Wickham and Point Samson. Water Minister Bill Marmion said the Water Corporation upgrades would cater for additional flows from Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s new Bungaroo Valley groundwater source. “In September 2011, the State Government secured an agreement with Rio Tinto to surrender its annual entitlement of water from the Millstream aquifer to develop its own alternative water supply from the Bungaroo Valley,” Mr Marmion said. “By developing this new source, Rio Tinto will free-up water from existing sources that can be used to support future development in Pilbara towns.

“Business and industries in these towns can continue to plan investment projects with water available to meet the demand of a rapidly growing population. “The first stage of the project to upgrade the WPWSS includes replacing and burying 11.3 kilometres of pipeline with bigger pipes to accommodate more water through the system, along with new regulating valves to improve efficiency. “The first stage is due to be completed by August this year, to coincide with the availability of Rio Tinto’s new supply from Bungaroo, at a cost of $42 million.” The Minister said in a separate piece of work, a nine million-litre tank along the pipeline would also be replaced. These works are due to start later this year.

Open since June 2012, the curry house has not only been serving new customers but has also acquired a significant cliental of returning regular customers. Victoria, aka Vicky, is the Head Chef and she has always exhibited true admiration and passion for the art of cooking ever since she was a young girl.

vicky’s curry house HOT STUFF: In Vicky’s Curry House, the spices are roasted and blended in store from a range of both Australian and imported herbs and spices with aromatic qualities and Ayurvedic properties.

It has been a dream come true for her to open her own curry house. Growing up in the Palm Oil estates of Johor, West Malaysia, she has fond memories of the times she spent helping her mother and her grandmother blending spices and curry pastes on granite grinding stones and cooking the most fragrant curries. Vicky claims this is where her inspiration to cook had sprung forth and to date still derives ideas for her curries from her traditional and cultural roots. In Vicky’s Curry House, the spices are roasted and blended in store from a range of both Australian and imported herbs and spices with aromatic qualities and Ayurvedic properties.

Vicky’s Curry House is certainly the go-to venue for the most top-notch curries in the Pilbara region, and they won’t disappoint.

For instance, cumin seeds, used in most of Vicky’s Curries are not only flavouring, but also traditionally used towards enhancing digestive and respiratory health and detoxification.

Vicky said there has been such wonderful, positive and encouraging feedback from valued customers from Karratha, Perth and Port Hedland as well as tourists and travellers. Vicky’s Malaysian Chicken Curry and Butter Chicken are two of the people’s favourites. The Vindaloo Curry is for the fire breathers, not the faint-hearted. There are normally two vegetarian curries every day for vegetarians and to celebrate every weekend, a special biryani rice meal will be served with two salads. Vicky’s Curry House is truly excited to introduce the tikka masala range of curries in the first week of February. There will always be a range of curries every day and one can choose based on their palate. Test tasting is highly recommended for those who haven’t tried the food from Vicky’s Curry House. One can have a taste of all the curries on display just like tasting gelato in from an ice-cream parlour, before purchasing. Curries are commonly served with some freshly baked naan bread or basmati rice. Major release of residential development sites The first major release of medium density residential development sites in the new Town Centre of South Hedland has been launched. Crawford Property Group is marketing the residential sites on behalf of LandCorp. According to Dave Rowe, Director of Crawford Property Group, the three development sites offer developers a unique opportunity to gain an early foothold into the future redevelopment of South Hedland. “South Hedland is Port Hedland’s ‘new town’, approximately 18 kilometres from the original settlement on the coast,” Mr

Rowe said. “Built during the mining boom of the 1970s, South Hedland was planned as a state-of-the-art community to provide new arrivals in the Pilbara with all the services and amenities of a contemporary urban centre. “There has been an historic shortage of accommodation in the greater Port Hedland area and the release of these new development sites is part of the ambitious State Government Pilbara Cities initiative to address this housing shortfall.” Mr Rowe said South Hedland is currently undergoing extensive redevelopment as

part of this initiative, which will eventually allow for the local population in Port Hedland to grow by up to 50,000 over the next decade. “These sites are located close to the brand new regional hospital, newly upgraded South Hedland Aquatic Centre with wave rider pool, the newly opened South Hedland Town Centre with a variety of new shops proposed to open within very close proximity,” Mr Rowe said. “They are the first major medium residential development sites to be released by Landcorp in the South Hedland Town Centre as part of Pilbara’s Port City and as a result they are expected to attract

keen interest from developers. “This is a very rarely offered opportunity to develop a flagship residential development so close to the South Hedland Town Centre. “The continuing revitalisation of the South Hedland Town Centre is a joint initiative between the State Government of West Australia and the Town of Port Hedland.” LandCorp is calling for offers to purchase from suitably qualified development companies. Proposals to be lodged with Crawford Property Group no later than 2pm on Thursday February 14, 2013.

Local Australian markets have continued to edge higher, with the ASX200 closing up another 1.34% for the week ending January 25. Positive economic data out of China completely overshadowed concerns about the US debt ceiling negotiations and Japans flagging economy. Youth Off The Streets invites applications for scholarship Youth Off The Streets will offer over 20 scholarships to disadvantaged young people to realise their dreams. Nominations for the annual national Scholarship Program are now open to young people in the Pilbara until April 5, 2013. The initiative was developed by Father Chris Riley nine years ago, and celebrates the gifts and strengths of young people from the Australian community who exhibit extraordinary promise, but who lack the personal support networks and resources that would allow them to fulfill their potential. Since the program began, the organisation has supported over 170 talented young people from all over Australia to reach their educational and development goals. Father Riley’s vision of the Scholarship Program is to bring together combined resources, encourage corporate social responsibility and engage the community to take responsibility for young people who have become disconnected or are at risk of becoming marginalised. “Many of our scholarship recipients experience financial barriers or lack traditional support networks and live away from their families”, Father Riley said. “Without this opportunity, these young people who have a desire to achieve their best, struggle to find the avenue to do so. “We received our highest number of applications to the program last year. “We are looking forward to being able to provide over 20 more scholarships this year to young people who really need that level of support to be able to turn their dreams into realities”. Thanks to assistance from individuals and organisations, the Scholarship Program provides both financial and personal support for young people to realise their educational goals in any field. Over 20 young people throughout Australia will be awarded a scholarship this year, including the financial support of $5,000 that will go towards resources to help them to further their education or training in their area of interest.

Along with financial assistance, Youth Off The Streets will match scholarship recipients with a mentor for the duration of their scholarship. The mentor will provide support and guidance to help them to achieve the goals set out in their pathway plan. Nominations can be made by a young person themselves, or by somebody on their behalf. Angel of Cuisine I always get asked about food for kids. I think its one of the hardest ‘food’ things to tackle in life. Especially when you are trying to eat well and they only want nuggets and chips. I suppose one thing to think about carefully when you feel overweight and struggling is what you are doing for your kids. If you are not happy with what you are doing for yourself, then it is not good for them either. School holidays can be tricky. You are in and out and around about and there are questions, questions, questions all day.

Email me at angelofcuisine@iinet.net.au and check out lots more recipes and inspirational ideas on my Facebook page

Ever wondered how they can magically reach to get unhealthy snacks and wave them in front of you when you are on the phone and can’t say no? Well, it’s time to put an end to nuggets and chips and fight the battles while we still have some time at home. That way, when it’s back to school you can spend that time relaxing and not having food battles.

www.facebook.com/angelofcuisine

Here are my Top 10 Tips for kids food:

1 If it’s in a packet, think carefully about it. Packaged foods have been

processed in one way or another. Turn it over and read what you are about to eat. If you still want it after you’ve read the back, then put it in your trolley. It’s exactly the same as my Top Tips for adults; if it’s in a packet, think about it.

2 Give them a great breakfast. No toast or no cereal. Think eggs, milk, cheese, vegetables, fruit and yoghurt. If they have a sandwich for lunch that is enough grains, start the day with something different that may not keep as well in their lunchboxes. 3 Make your own fruit water. Put fruit, ice and water in a jug to steep. Pour into drink bottles for school. You can make any flavor, why not let the kids choose. You can get the taste you want, without all the sugar and other nasties in cordials. 4 Think mezze for lunchboxes. Lots of little things is fun, interesting and good for you. Put lots of good options on your bench and let the kids choose. Make a game of it; tell them they have to choose certain colors or types of foods. 5

Let the kids choose. Take them to the shops on shopping day and let them choose four vegetables you are going to cook that week, or stand at the bench and have them choose two for their lunchboxes. Kids love to choose! Don’t put out too many options and again, make a game of it.

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. – John Wooden

The results are in for Terre Rouge Ballet Garnett, Lily Johnston and Matilda Reaburn for their outstanding achievement and to all the other TRB students, examined or not, for their dedication and enthusiasm for ballet. Congratulations also to TRB ballet student Kara Garnett who was recently announced as a joint scholarship winner following her attendance at Spring Grade School in Perth. This is a huge honour and highlights the dedication and talent shown by Kara to be awarded this in a field of students from Perth and across the State. TRB is gratified that as a small school catering only for ballet and contemporary dance, they can offer the tuition to achieve these results.

6 Make your own packets. Buy zip lock snack packs and think carefully

about what you put in the bag. Is it too sweet, too salty or too processed? The idea of making your own is to control portions and foods consumed. Make it colourful, full of texture and a variety and it will take so much longer to eat and be much more exciting than a packet of chips.

7 Let them eat well. Let’s face it, polony does taste pretty good and it’s economical, but what’s in it? Now there are some moments in life when you just need to turn away and put it in your mouth, but that’s when it’s a specialty, a treat, not everyday. Try different lean, premium meats like prosciutto. Enjoy a little bit and it won’t be expensive. Top it with lots of fresh salad vegetables and treat yourself well. 8 Buy small amounts of great produce. A tonne of anything is no good to you if you are never going to get through it or eat it. A couple of really good quality, fresh pieces of fruit is what your kids need each day. Be picky and demand premium; these are your little people. 9 Make it easy on yourself. If you get caught up in all the books and internet information about what you should and shouldn’t do you’ll give up before you start. If you are not the kind of Mum who cooks and freezes, trust me we all aren’t, so don’t feel bad. Buy premium, eat well, drink lots of fresh water, eat great fresh fruit and vegetables and make it easy. 10 Last of all, a simple thought. Our children are the future of the future generation. What we teach them today about life, people and food is what will shape the future of this generation. If you don’t know what you want to teach them, then it’s time to learn.

The eagerly awaited Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examination results are in and Terre Rouge Ballet (TRB) has achieved their best outcome yet. 45 TRB students were either examined (graded) or presented (ungraded, usually younger students). Graded students received excellent results including an unprecedented seven distinctions, the highest grade achievable. Medical students choose Karratha to ‘advance their career’ By Tamara Binamat The latest cohort of medical students from University of Western Australia has arrived in Karratha to spend their fifth year of studies working in the area. The Rural Clinical School is a combined satellite medical school of the University of Western Australia and Notre Dame. Students in their penultimate year of medical training spend a full year in the country in order to experience the practice of rural medicine, and thus encourage them to pursue a career in rural medicine. Karratha is one of 13 sites scattered across the state from Esperance to Kununurra where this program operates. The program is now in its twelfth year and evidence shows that positive clinical training experiences in rural settings encourage students to consider a rural career once fully qualified. The Karratha school has been operating since 2006. Due to the growth of the town, the success of the school locally and the increased number of applications from prospective students, Karratha will now be increased to a medium-sized site of five students. The five students for 2013 are Paige Bavich, Ibrahim Fleyfel, Emily Jasper, Peter Kenner and Andres Noe. Throughout the year, the students will be exposed to clinical situations at Nickol Bay Hospital and Aboriginal Medical Services in Roebourne. Des

Taverner,

Associate

Professor for the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia said students who spent their final year at Karratha get better results in exams than they would have if they had studied in Perth. “It’s more of a whole experience, it’s really integrated,” said Ms Taverner. “Here they challenged.”

Paige Bavich, Ibrahim Fleyfel, Emily Jasper, Peter Kenner and Andres Noe will spend their working time at Nickol Bay Hospital, Kinetic health, Karratha Medical Centre and Wickham Medical Centre and the Aboriginal Medical Service in Roebourne. The students will also travel with Karratha doctors to Onslow to offer outreach at the local medical clinic for a day at a time. Ms Taverner said the student’s experience in Karratha is not just about what they learn medically. “It’s also about learning what it’s like to be a real rural doctor and we want them to really be involved in the community,” she added. As Karratha has a high birth rate, with Nickol Bay Hospital looking after around 500 pregnancies per year, the students will be focussing on obstetrics and gynaecology this year. This week the students will help with their first delivery of a baby. Although nervous, the students agree a deep focus on obstetrics in their fifth year of curriculum is exciting.

• Paige Bavich, Emily Jasper, Andres Noe, Ibrahim Fleyfel and Peter Kenner after their plaster lesson “It’s something we haven’t really had any experience with so we’re very excited,” said Paige. “Karratha is such a young town and that’s one of the awesome opportunities that we have in choosing Karratha,” said Emily. “There is a young population with lots of births, so it’s a really dynamic environment.” Peter said he hopes the year will bring a cultural emergence to his studies. “I’m excited to work as a medical practitioner in the country and learn the kind of

skills we can use as doctors in the future, wherever we are,” he said. “It’s about gaining everything I can this year.” Andres said there are many advantages to studying in a remote location, rather than in the city. “The opportunities for development at a rural site like this is that you get much more one-to-one training,” he said. “It’s much more hands on.” Ibrahim added, “We contribute quite a lot more to the community in a rural place,

as opposed to the city”. “It helps both us as students in learning, and the community as well in that we are able to give back as opposed to just observing.” Andres agreed, adding the cultural studies are another drawcard. “The opportunities in Aboriginal health are outstanding [in this area] and we’ll be heavily involved in that,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for all of us to really expand on something that is not directly taught as well as it could be.”

Many people change their accommodation this time of year.

It can be a stressful and difficult exercise because moving house is always a hassle.

between suburbs a restricted policy limited to say, glassware and the TV might be all you need.

It pays therefore to hire a removalist to get the job done quickly and more easily. It’s worthwhile getting some quotes from reputable operators and checking the companies policy on breakages.

This normally takes place a few days before the van is loaded.

Professional movers take pride in their work and care with client’s possessions, but accidents can happen.

Sale Representatives

There are a range of removalist company insurance policies from full insurance to limited policies for specific items.

Melissa Jonsson: 0450 592 584 ads@pilbaraecho.com.au

Full value protection costs more but may be worth it if you are moving fragile goods over a long distance.

If you’re just moving

A removalist can organise the packing of boxes if required.

If you choose this option you can generally help and supervise. Most households do the packing themselves and usually the removalist can provide the boxes at a cost. Check to see if the removalist insurance policy is affected by your own packing. Number the boxes clearly so they refer to a more detailed contents audit kept by you. Professional removalists are never rushed and work to a plan. Work out a floor plan for your new home so the

the van, your time and the space. Remember, the items first loaded into the truck are the last ones to come out, so work with that.

That can be a handy relief at the end of a long day, without having to rummage through boxes for your toothbrush or the teabags.

If you decide on moving things yourself, plan the operation carefully.

Moving can be tiring so don’t rush to unpack.

Take the stress out of moving with a little forward planning to enjoy your new home.

A good idea is to prepare a small overnight bag as if staying in a motel.

You’ll need help from friends and family but you need to be firm and clear in your instructions.

Before you hire a truck or trailer work out how much stuff you need to move, where it’s going and what items require special attention. You may need trolleys, straps and blankets and you need to be prepared for how you might respond if a volunteer breaks a valued possession or injures themselves. Allow plenty of time for the move and map out an order for the items to be loaded and unloaded to make the best use of

ilbara P ...pride for Australia Day event

Photos courtesy of Tamara Binamat and Tambrey Tavern.

The Pilbara celebrated Australia Day in patriotic style last weekend as local watering holes upped the Aussie factor. Tambrey Tavern featured the High Voltage rock show, a tribute act to one of Australia’s greatest singers, Bon Scott, on the Saturday night. The weekend continued with a family day and a Sunday Session. Karratha newest bar, Blanche Bar, welcomed the Aussie spirit with a relaxed dress code, special lamb burgers and best-dressed competitions. Check out the best of the social pics here.

Tom Piper set to tear roof off

Seeking A Friend For The End of The World Starring: Steve Carell & Keira Knightley Director: Lorene Scafaria By Sean Smith, Karratha

It’s the end of the world as we know it in three weeks. An asteroid is hurtling through space towards Earth and an armegeddon is a certainty for all. As the world starts to lose their mind, Dodge (Steve Carell) keeps his intact. During the mass confusion that starts to unfold, Dodge’s wife leaves him. He meets Penny (Keira Knightley) soon afterward. Penny is in a bad state, she’s from the UK and she missed the last flight back to see her family. Dodge says he might be able to help her get home. Dodge puts himself on a mission to find his old childhood sweetheart and Penny comes along for the ride. Despite their age difference, they fall in love along the way and their initial plans are turned upside down.

This movie was ok, but not amazing. It had some funny moments for sure, but it didn’t really rock my world. I found Keira Knightley’s character irritating and Steve Carell’s character a tad boring. I could relate to some of the characters in the movie that start to go crazy. Some of their nutty antics during their count down to extinction made me laugh and say to myself ‘Yep, that’s exactly what I would do.’ We’ve all contemplated the idea of the world coming to an end. We’ve wondered what we would do and what it would be like. The moral to the story Seeking A friend For The End of the World is, keep calm when the world has lost their minds, don’t find happiness at the end of your life, search for it at the beginning. And if you look hard enough, most adversities hold the seed to a greater benefit. Now go and do whatever you want!

YOLO events are back for the New Year and their first event will top them all with Ministry of Sound DJ Tom Piper headlining at Ibis Styles Hotel on February 16. After a hugely successful year of events in 2012, including Beauty and the Geek, Stereosonic Launch Party and the White Party, YOLO is ready and raring to drop the beats all over again. Since setting forth on his mission to create a better world through “freshmaking”, Sydney-side vibemaster Tom Piper has positioned himself at the forefront of the Australian dance music scene. Now, thanks to YOLO DJ Pharaoh, Piper is taking a slight detour from travelling the world

Recfishwest welcomes commitment to rock fishing safety Peak recreational fishing body Recfishwest has welcomed a new commitment by the State Government to resource a consolidated, consistent approach for rock fishing safety in Western Australia. The Government has committed $300,000 over three years after a number of tragic incidents which indicates more needed to be done to protect fishers. “Recfishwest played a key role in ensuring the voices of rock fishers were heard and accounted for in the lead up to this decision,” Chief Executive Officer Dr Andrew Rowland said. “Rock fishing is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous pastimes in Australia and accounts for more than 25 per cent of coastal drowning deaths in WA, according to Surf Life Saving Australia. “Public awareness, promotion and education are of vital importance to reducing rock fishing incidences.” Despite increased media coverage of several recent incidences, recreational fishers are still putting themselves at risk of injury or death. Rock fishing safety has become a statewide

issue, with incidents occurring between Steep Point near Shark Bay right down to Esperance. Summer has already seen two unfortunate incidents in which recreational fishers have paid the ultimate price while fishing. Recfishwest is reminding fishers to stay safe this summer. Here are a few safety tips to follow: • Tell someone your plans, including where you plan to fish, and when you plan to return. • Avoid fishing alone where possible. • Assess your fishing area before beginning to fish. Larger than average waves may wash up to the area you have chosen. If this is the case, choose somewhere else to fish. • Know the conditions. If the weather is unfavourable, stay home. • Know how to swim. • Wear a personal flotation device. • Where possible, wear light clothing that won’t get waterlogged. Recfishwest advocates for sustainable fishing resources and policies that ensure long-term benefits to all recreation al fishers.

Taekwondo club kicks off 2013 The Hedland ATA Taekwondo Club is eagerly awaiting the commencement of the new taekwondo season in 2013. The Taekwondo club had a very successful year winning several medals at the state championships and producing one national champion. Tim Turner and Robert Zanetti who are the senior instructors believed this was an excellent result given the club only sent a small team of black

belts and one blue belt. ATA Hedland Taekwondo is a family club and the largest club in Hedland with over 60 active members. Mary Wyn, the club fund raising officer extraordinaire finished off 2012 by drawing a mega raffle that saw the first prize winner Scott Roberts win a grizzly quad bike, second prize winner Cynthia Dornell win a 80ltr Engel fridge, and K McCauley $1200 worth of

fishing gear for her family. The club would like to thank its sponsors including Pilbara Bikes and Boats, Smirkey’s Sport Store and Retravision. The club anticipates taking a large team to the State Championships

and

Tackle World Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates Bernie Pilkington was fishing off Tantabiddi using a 3-kilogram line and a soft plastic lure when he got a huge run from a fish. Over 20 minutes later he finally landed a 77 centimetre chinaman fish weighing 8kg. The tasty fish was kept for a meal or two. Chinaman fish can take baits or lures and are strong fish that are found in the gulf, around the islands and on the west side in both shallow and deep waters to around 100 metres. They are very good eating, and luckily our fish over here in WA are not affected by the ciguatera poising like chinaman fish on the east coast.

Another good eating fish is the green job fish. They are not often caught on rod and reel, but keen spear fishing anglers get amongst them in these waters. That is just what Ashley Barlow of Perth did this week with the green job fish pictured that was speared north of Exmouth. Ashley also got into some trout, rankin and reds. The annual Exmouth Game Fishing Club campout was held last weekend at Bundegi. This popular summer event is usually held at Tantabiddi and often postponed due to the weather.

Having said that, over the last few years the actual event has been held on brilliant weather days. This year the dates were affected by cyclone, but there was spectacular weather over the two days of the campout. Once again, many families joined in the fun of fishing and camping. Sections included most caught and released species from the shore with a photo. Mark and Julie Horn caught 25 species in the two days, while Andy and Nikki Sutton caught 26! That’s an awesome effort and shows you just how diverse the shore-based fishing can be in Exmouth during summer.

Junior siblings Riley and Chelsea Smith tagged a marlin each, with Riley winning the section. No one managed to tag a sailfish, although a few were hooked and dropped. The Spanish mackerel were quiet too, while the longest spangled emperor went to Jo Decker. Thanks go to the local Exmouth Tackle and Camping store for sponsoring the comp and to Mother Nature for giving us such great camping weather. It is only six weeks before the excitement of Gamex will be hitting the town of Exmouth. This year there is loads of entertainment lined up for visiting anglers, partners and locals. It all starts with Rose Tattoo playing on the Friday night, followed by six days of competitive fishing with around 80 boats expected to participate. Peter Anderton will be doing filleting demonstrations again, while Aaron Smith from the Smoke Shack will be smoking up some tasty seafood each night. Celebrity Chef Bart Beek will be here again for a Ladies Luncheon at the Novotel and this year there will be a fashion parade too. The famous Barefoot Fisherman ‘Hodgie’, will be here with the Aqua Tank showing everyone trick casting and how lures work in the tank with barramundi, snapper and other fish species. Famous artist Craig Smith will be attending, along with lure maker Peter Pakula. Returning again for kids events will be TV presenter and fishing writer Steve and Jo Starling. Expert billfish angler and photographer David Granville will be here for anglers to meet and fish with. So, if you are thinking of being involved, whether it be to fish or simply attend, get your entries in, buy your tickets or put your name down to help out during this great week of fun and fishing in Western Australia’s premier game fishing event.
