“Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL The Executive Council serves as an advisory committee to the President in administrative matters such as College updates, operations, policies and procedures, and planning.

Dr. Walter C. Barltett

Dr. Walter C. Bartlett, President Piedmont Community College

A

s President of Piedmont Community College, I am grateful for the outpour of support for the Connect NC Bond that passed in March of this year. It was exceptional to see our communities recognize the benefits North Carolina will receive from this overall investment.

In fact, these benefits will not only boost economic activity, but also improve the aging facilities on both the Person and Caswell County campuses. With your help, Piedmont Community College will continue to make a difference in the lives of our students by providing quality services in up-to-date facilities. Three initial projects related to the Connect NC Bond funding, renovations to the HVAC system, Barnett Auditorium in Buildling D, and Student Center in Building E, have been submitted for approval. Progress updates will be provided to the community as the projects are underway.

Dr. Joyce Johnson

Richard Self

Dr. Doris Carver

In addition, PCC is making changes to ensure that students will be more competitive in the workforce. Our Continuing Education and Curriculum programs are focused on providing educational avenues that match the employment landscape in our communities and surrounding areas. The credentials PCC students receive, however, are also nationally recognized, thus opening the door to a better tomorrow, no matter where a student chooses to reside.

Rick Farmer

Shelly Stone

Elizabeth Townsend

To what do I attribute PCC’s continued success in developing improved educational, economic, and cultural environments in our communities? The answer is our people - students and employees alike - and the valuable community partnerships established over the years. As you will see in the pages that follow, Piedmont Community College’s people and partnerships have allowed for great things, such as:

Dr. Jeff Paton

David Wehrenberg

Cindy Fox

• • • • • •

Improving student learning at all levels Increasing volunteerism and the spirit of community devotion Raising funds in recognition of those who care for our community Making communities better while improving our own drive to make a difference Touching others with our gifts and words of encouragement, and Creating award winning structures that help revitalize a significant piece of the community

In an effort to continue this individual and community evolution, I hope you will join us in future partnerships so that we can strive to do great things together! 2

In addition, the Duke Energy Foundation grant will provide resources to implement the Siemens Certified Mechatronics Systems Assistant (SCMSA) certification and expand current advanced manufacturing training pathways.

Second Free Little Library at PCC Now both campuses have a Little Free Library. Both were built by PCC carpentry students. The newest library was stocked by children from PCC’s Child Development Center who donated their own books during the official opening to ensure a full library.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

“Serve, Share, and Support” continues to be the Alumni Partnership motto. This philosophy has led to the creation of numerous activities over the years, including Exam Breaks for current students, assisting with the Veterans Day ceremony in Caswell County, congratulating graduates with a departing gift, offering opportunities for alumni to meet with, advise, and mentor current students, and providing a community benefits card to members.

In fact, a graduate from each county receives a $1,000 scholarship to PCC yearly. These funding opportunities continue, and have been awarded to students from Person High School, Roxboro Community School, and Bartlett Yancey High School.

But did you know that the PCC Alumni Partnership has awarded over $23,000 in scholarships since inception? It’s true! Scholarships were first awarded to new high school graduates from each of the College’s service areas.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Under the leadership of Shirley Deal, Alumni Cabinet Chair, Patti Clayton, Coordinator, Alumni Partnership, and a dedicated committee, Pickin’ by the Lake saw continued success in 2014, raising close to $7,000. With this, the Alumni Partnership leadership team announced the creation of a scholarship endowment at PCC. The donation of $10,000, given to the PCC Foundation, ensured that the PCC Alumni Partnership legacy would live on. This endowment will provide scholarship funding in perpetuity, meaning that a scholarship will always be awarded in honor of the Alumni Partners. Alumni Partnership Scholarship recipients: Brittany Williford, Jennifer Terry, and Kristy Clayton

Pickin’ by the Lake

Pickin’ by the Lake helps fund “New Beginnings” scholarships for students returning to school after being away from education. These scholarships are awarded to students in curriculum and continuing education programs. The Partnership continues to award scholarships to new high school graduates, as well.
