A musical journey in our history

Cento anni fa l’Italia entrava in guerra contro l’Impero Austro-Ungarico per completare il percorso di unificazione nazionale. La nostra regione fu il teatro degli scontri più cruenti e sanguinosi dove ogni metro di terreno conquistato inghiottì migliaia di vite. Migliaia di giovani, di corsa, si gettarono verso la Gloria sovente incontrando solo la Morte. Il Friuli Venezia Giulia è stato da sempre, per la sua specifica posizione geografica, un territorio a vocazione militare. Gran parte delle residenze nobiliari che ora si presentano in forma di villa sono prima nate per scopi difensivi o di controllo del territorio. Quest’edizione del Festival propone luoghi con uno spettro cronologico amplissimo, dall’Abbazia (anch’essa in forma di castello) di Sesto al Reghena fondata nell’VIII secolo d.C. fino a Castelvecchio sul Carso pesantemente coinvolto nei combattimenti della Grande Guerra. Un percorso

architettonico attraverso la storia di questa Regione così piccola, ma dalle innumerevoli identità. A questa varietà non poteva non corrispondere una scelta di programma che sapesse declinarla in musica sottolinenando quanto queste dimore ancora oggi possono raccontarci del loro passato glorioso.

One hundred years ago Italy entered the Great War against Austro-Hungarian Empire to complete its national unification. Our region was the scene of the ferocious and bloody clashes, where every meter of gained ground had swal-

lowed thousands of lives.

Thousands of young boys threw themselves racing toward Glory, often meeting only Death. Friuli Venezia Giulia has always been, for the reasons of its specific geographical position, a territory of military actions.

Most of the mansions that now are in the form of villas were originally built for the purposes of defense or territory control. This edition of the Festival offers places within a very wide chronological framework, from the Abbey (in the form of a castle) of Sesto al Reghena founded in the 8th century AD to Castelvecchio heavily involved in the World War I. It follows a path of the architectural history of this region, so small, yet with so many identities. To this variety could not match a choice of program able to tell in music those houses’ glorious past.

L’importanza della cultura per arricchire l’offerta turistica The importance of culture to enrich the tourist offer La Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia è lieta di sostenere l’ottava edizione del Piccolofestival del Friuli Venezia Giulia. Una manifestazione che, grazie all’impegno e alla professionalità degli organizzatori, si è consolidata nel tempo divenendo un interessante progetto in grado d’integrarsi perfettamente con il circuito delle dimore storiche regionali. Un’iniziativa in grado di innescare sinergie fra la cultura e il nostro patrimonio naturale, storico ed enogastronomico, riuscendo così a sposare appieno le linee della nuova strategia turistica regionale. Una realtà che merita attenzione perché si declina in un progetto di turismo culturale, pienamente inserito nel nostro tessuto produttivo e ricettivo. Infine a Piccolofestival è associata una programmazione a lungo termine e di respiro internazionale, elementi questi importanti per permettere di cogliere le opportunità offerte dalla programmazione

europea. Fattori che rendono questa manifestazione un ottimo esempio per dimostrare l’importanza della cultura per arricchire e caratterizzare l’offerta turistica del Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Our Region is proud to support the eighth edition of Piccolo Festival del Friuli Venezia Giulia. An event that, thanks to the expertise and to the commitment of the organisers, has become more and more renowned year after year. It has developed into a very remarkable project, capable of becoming a coherent whole and to integrate itself in the context of historical sites of

the region. An enterprise capable of creating synergies with our culture and our naturalistic, historical and regional heritage, meeting impeccably the guidelines of our new touristic strategies.

An experience that deserves our utmost attention, because it is closely linked with a larger and wider plan of cultural tourism, and fully nestled into our productive fabric. Furthermore, Piccolo Festival proposes a programme that has two characteristics: it is destined to have a future, and it is blessed with an international, large-scale effort. These two elements are crucial, and will allow us to benefit from the opportunities offered by the European planning.

Hence, this festival has to be seen as a positive example of how vital our culture is, and how the tourism in Friuli Venezia Giulia can be enriched and distinguished.

A

scoltare, scoprire, gustare: è il motto con cui l’edizione 2015 del Piccolo Festival del Friuli Venezia Giulia, l’ottava che si svolge nei siti più ammirati della nostra regione, si presenta al pubblico.

Ascoltare della buona musica, scoprire località della regione cui spesso preferiamo destinazioni esotiche e gustare, non solo musica e bellezza, ma i sapori caratteristici dei cibi e dei vini che hanno portato il nome del Friuli Venezia Giulia nel mondo.

Quest’edizione del Festival propone quindi siti architettonicamente molto vari e fascinosi compresi in uno spettro cronologico molto ampio che dall’Abbazia benedettina di Santa Maria in Sylvis a forma di castello a Sesto al Reghena, in provincia di Pordenone, fondata nell’ottavo secolo dopo Cristo che sarà la cornice straordinaria del concerto inaugurale dedicato a Carl Orff e ai suoi “Carmina Burana” si sposta verso Est per fare tappa a Villa Manin di Passariano, in provincia di Udine, splendido esempio di architettura settecentesca, una vera e propria reggia fra i campi di pannocchie di granoturco della pianura friulana. Quindi al Cortile delle Milizie dell’imponente Castello sul colle di San Giusto, a Trieste, fino a Castelvecchio di Sagrado sul Carso isontino pesantemente

coinvolto nei combattimenti della Grande Guerra. Altre tappe porteranno il Piccolo Festival edizione 2015 nei Castelli a ridosso dell’Adriatico di Miramare e Duino, cari a Massimiliano d’Asburgo e al poeta Rilke, o in quello di Zucco di Faedis, per non dire dei mulini di Reana del Rojale nell’hinterland udinese dove il Festival è nato. Un percorso architettonico, insomma, che ripercorre storia e territorio di questa Regione così piccola, ma dalle innumerevoli identità.

“Don Giovanni” di Mozart su libretto di Da Ponte porta la grande lirica a Villa Manin di Passariano dopo undici anni e nel Cortile delle Milizie del Castello di San Giusto a Trieste dove mancava dal 1971.

La rara “Messa di Requiem” di Liszt sarà eseguita a Sagrado. Il programma 2015, “Dimore di gloria”, è stato “cucito” dalla direzione artistica su ogni singolo luogo scelto, tenendo conto della sua storia e del paesaggio circostante. Gli spettacoli saranno abbinati ad aperitivi, menù e degustazioni di prodotti locali che saranno serviti prima, dopo o durante le rappresentazioni; inoltre, prima degli spettacoli, saranno previsti momenti d’introduzione all’ascolto e di approfondimento tenuti da musicologi ed esperti.

L

isten, discover, enjoy: this is the motto of the eight edition of the Piccolo Festival Friuli Venezia Giulia, which will present itself to the public at the most admirable places of our region. Listen to good music, discover places in the region that is often overshadowed by exotic destinations and enjoy, not only the music and the beauty, but also the particular flavors of food and wine that carry the name of Friuli Venezia Giulia all over the world.

This edition of the Festival therefore proposes fascinating and architecturally quite different places, built within a very broad chronological framework: from a castle-like Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis in Sesto alReghena, the province of Pordenone, founded in the 8th century AD, which will be a stunning setting for the opening concert dedicated to Carl Orff and his “Carmina Burana”, we move to the East to Villa Manin di Passariano, the province of Udine, a splendid example of 18th century architecture, a true palace between corn fields of Friuli plain. Then, from the Cortile delle Milizie of an imposing castle on the hill of San Giusto, Trieste, up

to Castelvecchio Sagrado on Isonzo Karst, an area harshly fought on during the Great War. Other shows will bring the 2015 edition of the Piccolo Festival to the castles near the Adriatic Sea: Miramare and Duino, places loved by Maximilian of Hapsburg and the poet Rilke, or to that one of Zucco di Faedis, not to mention the mills of Reana del Rojale in Udine hinterland where the Festival was born. In short, it is a path of the architectural history of this region, so small, yet with so many identities. Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” (libretto by Da Ponte) brings great lyric to Villa Manin of Passariano after eleven years, and also to the Cortile delle Milizie of San Giusto’s castle in Trieste, where it was missing since 1971. The rare “Requiem” by Liszt will be performed in Sagrado. When choosing the locations for the 2015 program,"Mansions of glory”, the artistic director took into consideration the history and surroundings of each place.

The shows will be combined with aperitifs, menus and tastings of local products, served before, after or during the performances; moreover, before the shows, musicologists and expert will give introductory talks.

elebre nella letteratura europea fin dal sedicesimo secolo, la figura di Don Giovanni rappresenta l’amante insaziabile, cinico, seduttore e spregiatore della morale e della vita. La sua vicenda coincide con quella dell’amore peccaminoso e della punizione divina, e nei testi tradizionali che l’hanno tramandata, pur fra tante varianti, è rappresentata la scomparsa di Don Giovanni inghiottito nell’inferno per opera della statua di pietra del padre di una sua amante che era stato da lui ucciso.

L’origine storica e ideale di questo personaggio è incerta, certo è invece il primo testo noto a lei dedicato, il dramma di Tirso da Molina “Burlador de Sevilla” del 1630.

Il suo stesso titolo indica nella gioia e nella beffa, prima ancora che nei suoi aspetti malefici, i significati della seduzione di cui il protagonista si vanta.

Nel secolo diciottesimo il comportamento sessuale libero di Don Giovanni diviene uno dei modelli principali della tarda cultura libertina. Accanto a questi aspetti di diffusione, i caratteri che meglio qualificano la figura del grande seduttore del Settecento sono dovuti alle innumerevoli riduzioni musicali, e prima fra tutte il “Don Giovanni” di Mozart su testo di Lorenzo Da Ponte,

rappresentata per la prima volta a Praga nel 1787. Dalla stagione di Molière (il suo “Don Juan” risale al 1665) la figura di Don Giovanni non era mai sparita dalle scene teatrali. Carlo Goldoni, per le sue inclinazioni di drammaturgo naturalista e moralista, si meravigliava di quel successo, ma lui stesso si decise a scrivere nel 1736 un suo “Don Giovanni Tenorio”, bolso dramma vastamente ritoccato anche nelle parti essenziali della vicenda.

Senza enumerare tutte le opere musicali di quel tempo ispirate al soggetto, basterà ricordare quelle di Le Tellier (1713), Righini (1777), Gardi (1787) e Gazzaniga (1787).

Rispetto a quei precedenti Da Ponte e Mozart fornirono qualcosa di ben diverso e di più complesso aprendo le porte all’ingresso di Don Giovanni nella nostra moderna sensibilità.

Don Giovanni come eroe del libero pensiero oltre che dell’insaziabile appetito sessuale, agisce come seguendo un istinto in cui la pulsione erotica è frammista a un senso di morte incombente e onnipresente, in reale sintonia con l’essenza musicale, emotiva e non ragionativa del dramma che ne fanno un personaggio della modernità incessantemente rivisitato dalla modernità.

ell-known character of the European literature from the XVI Century, Don Giovanni is the personification of an insatiable lover, a cynic, a player, a swashbuckler who despises any kind of moral rules. His adventures are marked with all the possible shades of the wicked love, followed by the divine punishment.

Traditionally (despite the numerous variants), Don Giovanni gets thrown down to hell by a stone sculpture depicting the father of one of his women, whom he had killed.

The historical roots of this character are uncertain; the first certain testimony of a text dedicated to Don Giovanni was Tirso De Molina’s drama “Burlador de Sevilla” (1630). The title itself seems to reveal that joy and burlesque are, more than malice and evil, the key ingredients of the art of seduction.

In the XVIII Century, Don Giovanni’s licentious sexual conduct becomes one of the main models of the late libertine culture.

The features that best define the profile of the great lover at the times were based not only on the original text, but also on the various musical versions. First among many, Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” based on Lorenzo

Da Ponte’s text, was presented for the first time in Prague in 1787.

From Molière’s time (his “Don Juan” is from 1665) this character has never left the scene.

Carlo Goldoni, who was, in some sense, a moralistic and naturalistic dramatist, was puzzled by the great success of the character, and in 1736 he decided to write his “Don Giovanni Tenorio”, a dull and tepid drama vastly modifying even the most essential parts of the story.

It would be impossible to enumerate all the musical adaptations based on the subject - the most memorable are the ones by Le Tellier (1713), Righini (1777) and Gazzaniga (1787). Da Ponte and Mozart, unlikely their precursors, created something different and more complex, paving the way for the Don Giovanni’s entrance into our modern perception.

Don Giovanni as a free-thinking hero, other than a voracious lover, acts following his instinct; his erotic drive is intertwined with a sense of incumbent and pervasive doom, in tune with the musical essence of the drama, which is emotional, not rational. Therefore, Don Giovanni becomes a character of the modern society, constantly rebuilt and remodelled by the modern world.

Cos’è la SCLEROSI MULTIPLA: è una delle più gravi malattie che colpiscono il sistema nervoso centrale. Cronica, invalidante e imprevedibile, la sclerosi multipla può portare gradualmente all’invalidità e rendere difficili anche le azioni più semplici della vita quotidiana .

L’Associazione Italiana Sclerosi Multipla (AISM) nasce nel 1968 per rappresentare i diritti e le speranze delle persone affette da sclerosi multipla.

LA SEZIONE AISM DI TRIESTE nasce nel 1981 ed è oggi sul territorio un punto di riferimento per le persone affette da sclerosi multipla e le loro famiglie. Nel corso del 2014 la Sezione AISM di Trieste ha erogato più di 8.500 servizi a favore di queste persone.

A livello nazionale l’AISM promuove eventi per la raccolta fondi e attività volte a sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica su questa malattia invalidante e finanziare la ricerca scientifica (FISM).

A livello locale la SEZIONE AISM DI TRIESTE, oltre ad aderire alla varie iniziative nazionali AISM, è stata presente a diversi eventi organizzati nella nostra città fra i quali due concerti promossi dall’Associazione Mozart Italia di Trieste ed oggi qui, nella splendida cornice del Castello di San Giusto, per il Don Giovanni di W.A. Mozart assieme all’Associazione Mozart di Trieste e all’Associazione Piccolo Festival.

Il 20 giugno scorso è stato stabilito un nuovo record: in piazza Unità d’Italia a Trieste è stata assemblata una coperta da 3.080,70 metri quadrati di superficie: LA COPERTA PIU’ GRANDE DEL MONDO. Il tutto grazie al lavoro dell’Associazione Picknitartcafè che ha saputo coinvolgere migliaia di persone che con le loro pezze fatte ad uncinetto hanno contribuito a raggiungere questo prestigioso traguardo. La coperta è stata poi donata alla Sezione AISM di Trieste.

L’attività dell’Associazione Mozart Italia sede di Trieste, ha avuto inizio grazie alla volontà della pianista Antonina Tea Sala ed è proseguita poi grazie all’impegno di un gruppo di persone che oggi costituiscono il Comitato direttivo dell’Associazione stessa.

Uniti dalla stessa passione per la musica, hanno capito che, oggi, per poter attrarre giovani e meno giovani, amanti della musica e dell’arte o semplici curiosi, è necessario utilizzare un linguaggio semplice e diretto che parli al cuore più che alla mente. Grazie agli eventi dedicati ai giovani (“Un violino per un Enfant Prodige”, “Non solo Mozart”, il Masterclass IMFA, ecc.), l’affluenza di pubblico e di curiosi è sempre stata molto elevata e ci ha fatto piacere scoprire che tanti erano i giovani attratti da questo tipo di eventi. Non sono mancate situazioni sperimentali prima fra tutte il recital “AMADEUS AL COTTON CLUB” dove abbiamo tentato, riscuotendo un inaspettato successo, una compenetrazione tra musica classica e jazz.

Crediamo che oggi, in un mondo dove valori e tradizioni faticano a sopravvivere, il nostro compito deve essere quello di proporre buona musica essendo nel contempo protagonisti del bello, dello stile e del buongusto.

The activities of Mozart Association - Italy, Trieste, started by the wish of the pianist Antonina Tea Sala, and then continued, thanks to the efforts of a group of people that today forms the Steering Committee of the Association. Joined together by a shared passion for music, they realised that, in order to kindle the interest of young and old people, to appeal lovers of music or simply the inquisitive neophytes, you should use a simple and direct language that speaks to the heart, more than the mind. Thanks to special events tailored on young people’s tastes (“A violin for a Enfant Prodige”, “Not only Mozart”, the Masterclass IMFA, etc.), the audience has always been very large, and it has been incredibly pleasant to discover that a vast number of young people were fascinated by these events. Incredibly successful were also experimental events such as “AMADEUS AT COTTON CLUB”, where the uniqueness was to create a hybrid between classical and jazz music.

We believe that nowadays, in a world where values and tradition struggle to survive, our duty is to support and share good music, and to be protagonists of the beauty, of the style, of the elegance.

arl Orff (Monaco di Baviera, 1895 – ivi, 1982) è uno dei compositori tedeschi di maggiore rilievo del Novecento. Autore di oratori e di opere teatrali, oltre che insigne didatta è ricordato soprattutto per i “Carmina Burana” (1937), vale a dire il lavoro scenico commisto di opera, sacra rappresentazione, balletto e oratorio che il musicista bavarese ricavò dalla raccolta di componimenti poetici medievali conservati nella Bayerische Staatsbibliothek di Monaco e provenienti dal convento di Benediktbeuern fondato attorno al 740 da San Bonifacio a Bad Tölz in Alta Baviera. Alcuni di questi testi sono corredati di notazione musicale, ma all’epoca in cui Carl Orff se ne occupò nessuna delle musiche originali era nota. Orff fu attratto in particolare dalla varietà degli argomenti trattati nelle poesie della silloge bavarese: iniziò dunque a elaborarne musicalmente alcune, fino a completare ventiquattro brani, per la maggior parte su testo latino; fanno eccezione un pezzo in alto tedesco medievale e uno in provenzale. Alla prima rappresentazione, a Francoforte, i “Carmina Burana” ottennero un successo trionfale che modificò totalmente la vita dell’autore e proiettò la sua immagine in una dimensione

internazionale. La cantata fu eseguita in altre città tedesche e, nonostante la sua esecuzione fosse molto ostacolata dal regime nazista per il tono erotico di alcuni canti, divenne l’opera musicale più conosciuta tra quelle composte durante il periodo della dittatura hitleriana. Particolarmente notevole è la costante propensione di Carl Orff per l’arte di Monteverdi attraverso la quale voleva giungere fino alle più remote radici del melodramma. Questa composizione appartiene al trittico teatrale dei “Trionfi” che, composto in periodi diversi, comprende anche i “Catulli Carmina” e il “Trionfo di Afrodite”. Se la “Trilogia dell’amore”, e in particolare i “Carmina Burana”, pone Orff fra gli immortali della musica del Novecento, non va dimenticata la sua attività di autore di teatro musicale con lavori originali che spaziano da “Antigone”, tratta da Hölderlin, a opere di genere fiabesco o ispirate a leggende per le quali scelse organici orchestrali insoliti o inattesi.

Se il contenuto tematico delle sue opere è molto esile e ridotto al minimo, Orff crea una travolgente orgia di suoni la cui energia, non esente da critiche, affascina e cattura l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore.

C

arl Orff (Munich, 1895 – 1982) is one of the most successful German composers of the XX Century. Author of oratorios and plays, the illustrious self-educated maestro is especially renowned for his “Carmina Burana” (1937), the scenic work that mixed opera, religious plays, ballet and oratorio. The Bavarian artist based this piece on a series of medieval poems preserved in Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, originally coming from the monastery of Benediktbeuern, founded around 740 by Saint Boniface in Bad Tölz (Bezirk Oberbayern). Some of these texts were completed by musical annotations; nevertheless, at the times of Carl Orff, none of the original compositions was famous.

Orff was particularly fascinated by the variety of topics enfolded into the poems of the Bavarian silloge: therefore, he started to turn some of them into music, until he completed twenty-four compositions, written in Latin for the major part, with two exceptions: one piece in Middle High German and one in old French.

Upon its first presentation in Frankfurt, the “Carmina Burana” was acclaimed as a

tremendous success. This changed radically the life of the author and spread his fame internationally. The songs were performed in other German cities and, despite being condemned by the Nazi regime for the erotic hue of some of the compositions, they became the most famous musical opera among those written during Hitler’s dictatorship.

Orff had a perpetual interest for the art of Monteverdi, through which he wanted to reach the very core of melodrama. This composition belongs to the triptych of the “Trionfi”, which includes also the “Catulli Carmina” and the “Trionfo di Afrodite”.

The “Trilogia dell’Amore” (“Trilogy of Love”) ensures Orff’s place among the greatest composers of the XX Century; nevertheless we mustn’t forget his production of musical theatre: from the “Antigone”, based on Hölderlin’s literary world, to fairy tales or legends with surprising and inventive orchestral ensembles. Although the content of his works may be quite slender and concise, Orff had created an enthralling orgy of sounds whose energy – often criticised – does not fail to fascinate and mesmerise the audience.

i è molto scritto e detto delle crisi mistiche e dei contatti che Franz Liszt (Raiding, 1811 – Bayreuth, 1886) ebbe in gioventù con pensatori, filosofi e artisti della Francia degli anni 1830, nonché della partecipazione viva che il musicista dimostrò fin d’allora – e mai smentita in seguito, anzi accresciutasi fino a dominare l’ultima parte della sua vita – verso quello che possiamo definire per brevità, il problema religioso, sia nei riflessi dell’esistenza umana sia nei rapporti con l’espressione artistica. Certo è che l’eccentrico musicista ungherese aderì a quattro ordini minori nel 1865 e nella seconda metà della sua vita indossò la tonaca come una divisa militare. Soprattutto, compose una grande quantità di musica religiosa. Nel gruppo vistoso, delle opere religioso-corali meritano particolare ricordo, non per altro che per la vastità e compiutezza degli assunti, la Messa di Gran composta nel 1855, l’oratorio “La leggenda di Santa Elisabetta”, 1857-1862, e l’altro, più noto “Christus”, terminato nel 1867 e suddiviso nelle parti di “Natale”, “Dopo l’Epifania”, “Passione” e “Resurrezione”. Contraddistinto da un forte misticismo legato ai grandi momenti della vita di Gesù, “Christus” è un’opera del Liszt maggiore. Anche il meno noto Requiem ha sezioni che illustrano come

Liszt sia stato, molto probabilmente - Chopin e Wagner inclusi - il più grande innovatore dell’armonia musicale nel diciannovesimo secolo. Poterlo ascoltare in concerto è fatto assai raro.

Liszt lo scrisse per un organico di quattro soli, due tenori e due bassi, un coro maschile sostenuti da organo, ottoni e timpani. Si tratta di un’opera della tarda attività compositiva del musicista che lo scrisse tra 1867 e il 1868. Rimane incerto il motivo che lo spinse a scriverlo. Pare che, giacché suddito dell’Impero AustroUngarico, Liszt fosse rimasto molto impressionato dalla notizia giunta da Santiago de Querétaro in Messico dove il 19 giugno 1867 l’Arciduca Massimiliano d’Austria era stato fucilato. Anche le recenti morti della madre e della figlia, cui la composizione è dedicata, contribuiscono a conferire un colore particolarmente cupo alla composizione. Nel programma di “Dimore di Gloria” il Requiem di Liszt vuole ricordare il centenario della Prima Battaglia dell’Isonzo (23 giugno – 7 luglio 1915) e commemorare i caduti ungheresi per parte imperiale che, come ricorda perennemente il cippo posto sulla Cima tre del Monte S. Michele, “si affratellarono nella morte” con quelli italiani.

In Castelvecchio at Sagrado Liszt and his rare Requiem

any things have been written and said about Franz Liszt’s (Raiding, 1811 – Bayreuth, 1886) spiritual struggles and about his early contacts with theorists, philosophers and artists from the 1830 France. Year after year, his interests and his sensitivity leaned increasingly towards what we could define, in a nutshell, the “religious questions”, reflected both in the human sphere and the artistic realm. It is certain that the eccentric Hungarian musician joined four minor orders in 1865, and in the second half of his life he wore the cassock as well as the armour.

Moreover, he composed a great quantity of religious music. Among the vast number of religious-choral works, we must mention at least the “Messa di Gran” composed in 1855, the oratorio “The Legend of Saint Elizabeth”, 1857-1862, and the other, more famous, “Christus”, finished in 1867 and divided in four parts: “Christmas”, “After the Epiphany”, “Passion” and “Resurrection”, all marked with a strong mysticism related to the most important moments in the life of Jesus. Even the less famous Requiem has sections showing that Liszt was the greatest innovator of the musical harmony of the XIX

Century, probably even greater than Chopin and Wagner. The possibility to listen to the Requiem in a concert is quite rare.

Liszt wrote it for an ensemble of four solos, two tenors and two basses, a male chorus accompanied by the organ, brass instruments and timpani. The opera dates back to the late career of the musician, who wrote it between 1867 and 1868. The reason why he wrote it is still uncertain. It seems that, being a citizen of the AustroHungarian Empire, in 1867 Liszt was very shocked by the news that the Archduke Maximilian of Austria had been executed by a firing squad in Santiago de Querétaro in Mexico. Moreover, the recent deaths of his mother and his daughter (to whom the composition was dedicated) contributed to a peculiar gloomy tone of the piece.

Through Liszt’s Requiem, the programme of “Dimore di Gloria” wants to celebrate the centennial of the First Battle on the River Isonzo (23rd June - 7th July 1915) and to honour the Hungarians who fought and died for the empire. As witnessed by the memorial stone placed on the third peak of Monte S. Michele, they became “brothers in the moment of death” with the Italian soldiers.

ieci brani operistici da “Il Trovatore”, “Otello”, “Pagliacci”, “Turandot”, “Andrea Chènier”, “Carmen”, “L’Arlesiana” e “Cavalleria rusticana”, oltre che, in omaggio alla grande tradizione triestina dell’operetta una pagina di Lehàr da “Il paese del sorriso” e, a ricordo di Mario Del Monaco grande interprete di canzoni di successo “Un amore così grande”, “Parlami d’amore Mariù”, “Core ‘ngrato” e l’immancabile “O sole mio” compongono il programma dell’omaggio al grande tenore fiorentino che il Piccolo Festival del Friuli Venezia Giulia gli rende nel centenario della nascita. Li interpretano tre tenori di diverse nazionalità, un italiano, Francesco Anile, un sudamericano Luis Chapa, e un israeliano, Yotam Cohen, accomunati dalla predilezione per il repertorio che fu caro a Del Monaco, quello di tenore lirico spinto se non drammatico.

Tenore lirico spinto, con qualche rara eccezione, Del Monaco lo fu da subito fin dagli anni della sua incredibile ascesa avvenuta tra il 1946 e il 1949 e contrassegnata da un crescente consenso popolare e in buona misura critico. Gli anni Cinquanta confermarono la sua notorietà consacrandolo, grazie anche alle numerose testimonianze discogra-

fiche, fra i maggiori interpreti del vocalismo lirico-drammatico. In Canio dei “Pagliacci” fu tra i pochi veri eredi della tradizione carusiana. “Otello” è stato il personaggio che ne ha costituito il punto d’elezione della sua intera carriera in tutto il mondo per un buon numero di anni, due volte consegnato al disco, la seconda con Herbert von Karajan, e divenuto ben presto il suo cavallo di battaglia. Si disse che la drammaticità delle sue interpretazioni richiedeva personaggi dalle tessiture centrali in cui l’artista poteva elargire il colore bronzeo del suo “medium”.

I primi anni di carriera furono però dedicati a un repertorio misto e smentiscono quest’assunto. Del Monaco fu, sia pure sporadicamente Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor” e perfino, in disco, il Duca in “Rigoletto”. Lo si accusò di un fraseggio stentoreo e virile e poco portato a un fraseggio più accurato. Riascoltato oggi, quest’assunto lascia il tempo che trova. I suoi Radames, Ernani, Manrico di cui esiste testimonianza televisiva, sono lì a smentirlo. Del Monaco fu artista eclettico, non disdegnò il repertorio contemporaneo e, a fine carriera, si concesse anche alla cinepresa di Dino Risi che lo volle in uno dei suoi film più riusciti “Primo amore”.

en opera passages, from “Il Trovatore”, “Otello”, “Pagliacci”, “Turandot”, “Andrea Chènier”, “Carmen”, “L’Arlesiana” and “Cavalleria rusticana”. A tribute to the great tradition from Trieste, the operetta, with a page from Lehàr (“Il paese del sorriso”). An homage to Mario Del Monaco, unforgettable performer of incredibly successful songs, such as “Un amore così grande”, “Parlami d’amore Mariù”, “Core ‘ngrato” and the unfailing “O sole mio”. These are the elements combining in the tribute concert dedicated to the great Florentine tenor; a tribute that Piccolo Festival of Friuli Venezia Giulia is honoured to present in the hundredth anniversary of his birth. The interpreters are three tenors from three different countries: the Italian Francesco Anile, the South-American Luis Chapa, and the Israeli Yotam Cohen, joined in the common admiration for Del Monaco’s repertoire, leaned towards the shades of the extreme, sometimes even dramatic, lyrical tenor. Extreme lyrical tenor, with some rare exceptions: Del Monaco had been a tenor since the early years and during the times of his extraordinary success, achieved between 1946 and 1949, and characterized by a general plaudit shared by audience and critique. The 50’s would confirm his notoriety, crowning him as one of the most

notable performers in the field of lyricdramatic vocalism, thanks to the numerous recordings. In Canio from “Pagliacci” he was one of the finest and most rare successors of Caruso. “Otello” was the character who, most of all, contributed to make him reach the acme of his entire career, his strong suit; his fame reached the whole world and lasted for various years, and two records were produced: the second with Herbert von Karajan. It was once said that the dramatic tone of his performances required characters with central textures, to which the artist could donate the bronze shade of his “medium”. However, the first years of his career were dedicated to a mixed repertoire and this contributes to contradict this assumption. Del Monaco was Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor”, and even the Duke in “Rigoletto”. He was once accused of having a stentorian and masculine phrasing, not very prone to be accurate. If we listen to it again today, we realise that this conjecture is not to be taken seriously: his Radames, Ernani, Manrico – that were also broadcasted in TV – can easily prove it wrong. Del Monaco was a versatile artist; he did not avoid the contemporary repertoire, and at the end of his career was also captured by Dino Risi’s camera, starring in one of the director’s most successful films, “Primo amore”.

iù ancora che una celebrità Mario Del Monaco fu, per più di una generazione di appassionati d’opera, un mito. In Italia, ma anche in America Latina e negli Stati Uniti dove si sviluppò principalmente una carriera leggendaria, l’artista fiorentino incarnò il mito divistico del tenore assoluto. Erano anni in cui un artista dalla voce di straordinaria potenza e dotato dalla natura di un fisico da attore cinematografico e di notevoli capacità recitative, poteva rivaleggiare per popolarità con un campione olimpico, una star del grande schermo, un cantante di musica leggera. Del Monaco - nato a Firenze il 27 luglio 1915, esattamente un secolo fa, da una famiglia borghese in cui si coltivavano l’amore per la musica e l’arte s’indirizzò giovanissimo al canto e a tredici anni era in scena, protagonista dell’idillio antico per solo e coro di Massenet “Narciso”.

Nel 1940 il debutto a Cagli (“Cavalleria rusticana”) e al Puccini di Milano (“Madama Butterfly”). Sempre come Pinkerton fa il suo ingresso alla Scala, trasferita al Lirico in seguito ai bombardamenti, nel 1945. Al Teatro Verdi di Trieste, che nel periodo del governo anglo-americano aveva un forte sostegno economico, arrivò in quello stesso anno per “Turandot”, “Aida”, “Tosca”,

Nel 1947 esordì nell’America del Sud e al Colon di Buenos Aires fu per la prima volta Otello nel 1950 poco prima di debuttare trionfalmente a New York (“Manon Lescaut”). Al Met fu il protagonista incontrastato di nove stagioni consecutive inaugurandone quattro e tenendo a battesimo le due illustri rivali Renata Tebaldi in “Otello” e Maria Callas in “Norma”. Artista discograficamente in esclusiva Decca formò con la Tebaldi una coppia inossidabile che rivaleggiava a colpi d’integrali operistiche con quella formata da Callas e Di Stefano, in esclusiva EMI. Gli anni Cinquanta ne sancirono il mito che proseguì lungo i Sessanta. Cantò Wagner in italiano alla Scala (“Lohengrin”) e, caso raro all’epoca per un artista italiano, in tedesco in Germania. Si ritirò definitivamente nel 1973 dopo un ultimo Otello a Bruxelles, il raro Stiffelio a Napoli e “Pagliacci” a Vienna. A Treviso, dove il teatro gli è stato intitolato, si dedicò all’insegnamento e, come docente lo ricordiamo a Villa Manin di Passariano. Morì nel 1982.

or more than one generation of opera lovers, Mario Del Monaco was not just a celebrity: he was a legend. In Italy, but also in South America and the United States where he built an illustrious career, the Florentine artist embodied the myth of “absolute tenor”. Those were the times when an artist with an extraordinary and powerful voice, the look of a movie star and a considerable acting talent, could easily surpass in popularity any Olympic champion, a Hollywood star or a popular music singer. Del Monaco – born in Florence on the 27th July 1915, exactly one-hundred years ago, in an upper-class family that cherished the love for music and art – was early encouraged to become a singer. When he was thirteen, he was already on stage, as the protagonist of the ancient idyll for solo and choir “Narcissus”, by Massanet.

In 1940 he debuted in Cagli (“Cavalleria Rusticana”) and at the Puccini theatre in Milan (“Madame Butterfly”). Again as Pinkerton he made his entrance at Teatro La Scala, moved to Teatro Lirico after the bombing of the city in 1945. He arrived to Teatro Verdi in Trieste – which at the time of the Anglo-American command had a strong economic support – singing “Turandot”, “Aida”, “Tosca”, “Chénier” and “Cavalleria”.

It was in one of those occasions when he starred in a concert in Miramare Castle.

In 1947 Del Monaco debuted in South America, and at Colon in Buenos Aires he played Othello for the first time in 1950, short before invading triumphantly the New York scene with “Manon Lescaut”. At the Met he was an undisputed protagonist of nine consecutive seasons, opening four of them and watching the careers of the two illustrious rivals Renata Tebaldi in “Othello” and Maria Callas in “Norma”.

Working exclusively for the record label Decca, Del Monaco and Tebaldi formed an indissoluble artistic couple that competed with the one formed by Callas and Di Stefano (EMI). In the 50’s Del Monaco’s fame was at its peak and universally spread, and his myth was strong and lively also in the 60’s. He sung Wagner in Italian at the Scala (“Lohengrin”) and then, which is a very unusual fact for an Italian artist of that time, in Germany he sung in German. He retired officially in 1973 after a last Othello in Bruxelles, the rare Stiffelio in Naples and “Pagliacci” (“Clowns”) in Wien. In Treviso, where later a theatre was named after him, he decided to become a teacher - for this role we remember him in Villa Manin in Passariano. He passed away in 1982.

omposti nel 1823 sui testi di Wilhelm Müller, poeta romantico minore, che aveva scritto un omonimo ciclo di poesie, i cinque libri di “Die schöne Müllerin” D 795 Op. 25 (La bella mugnaia) furono pubblicati da August.

Schubert si lamentava perché uscivano con molta lentezza; in una lettera a Ferdinand spedita nell’agosto 1824 da Zseliz, il compositore scriveva: “lo stesso avviene per i Lieder di “Die schöne Müllerin”: ogni tre mesi esce un libro.”.

I venti Lieder sono, infatti, divisi in cinque libri per presentare l’intero ciclo in quelli che possono essere chiamati i “cinque atti” di una rappresentazione, ossia l’arrivo al mulino (1-4), l’innamoramento (5-9), l’idillio e i momenti di felicità (10-12), gelosia e separazione (13-17), rassegnazione e morte della giovane mugnaia (18-20).

Dopo una prima e tiepida accoglienza, “Die schöne Müllerin” ottenne un successo e una popolarità così vasta che non fu eguagliata da nessun altro ciclo liederistico schubertiano. I cinque libri furono pubblicati come Op. 25 e dedicati al barone Schönstein, amico del conte Esterhazy e baritono di qualità che fu un eccellente

interprete del Lied schubertiano.

“Die schöne Müllerin” racconta la storia di un giovane mugnaio che lascia la propria casa e, incamminandosi lungo la via indicata dal ruscello, arriva in un altro mulino. La bellezza del posto e l’amore che prova per una giovane e bella mugnaia lo trattengono in quel luogo. Il giovane mette in atto una serie di azioni spinto dai sentimenti che pervadono il suo animo e dal desiderio che questi siano ricambiati dalla bella mugnaia.

Quando finalmente ciò accade, spunta inaspettatamente un terzo incomodo, un cacciatore, che conquisterà facilmente il cuore della sua amata. La tristezza per il perduto amore non permetterà al giovane di sopravvivere e il desiderio di morte sarà cantato dallo stesso ruscello.

Il protagonista assoluto dei venti Lieder del ciclo è il giovane mugnaio; quanto narrato è visto attraverso le sue parole e i suoi sentimenti. Tuttavia l’elemento essenziale della poetica è l’acqua che scorre, parla, canta.

Le poesie sono piene di sfumature e molto delicate. Schubert ne ha colto perfettamente lo spirito. La parte musicale integra e arricchisce quella poetica.

omposed in 1823, based on the texts written by a minor romantic poet Wilhelm Müller – the author of an eponymous cycle of poems – the five books of “Die schöne Müllerin” D 795 Op. 25 (The Beautiful Milleress) were published by August.Schubert complained that the books were printed very slowly; in a letter to Ferdinand sent in August 1824 from Zseliz, the composer wrote: “the same happens with the ‘Die schöne Müllerin’ Lieders: a book is published every three months.”

The twenty Lieder are, in fact, divided into five books, presenting the entire cycle as something that may resemble a fiveact structure: the arrival to the mill (1-4), falling in love (5-9), the romance and the moments of happiness (10-12), jealousy and separation (13-17), resignation and death of the young miller’s wife (18-20).

After an initial tepid welcome, “Die schöne Müllerin” later became so popular that it turned out to be the most successful play of Schubert’s Lieder cycle. The five books were published as Op. 25, dedicated to Baron Schönstein, a friend of Count Esterhazy, a

baritone and an excellent interpreter of the Schubert’s Lied.

"Die schöne Müllerin” tells the story of a young miller who leaves his home and, walking along the path next to a creek, gets to another mill. The beauty of the place and the enchantment of a young and beautiful milleress keep him there.

The young man’s actions are driven by his instincts and impulses, and by the wish that his feelings for the gorgeous milleress are reciprocated. When his hopes get finally fulfilled, a third man, a hunter, shows up unexpectedly and wins the heart of his beloved. Overwhelmed by great sadness, the young miller doesn’t survive, and the creek sings about his desire for death.

The protagonist of the twenty songs of the cycle is the young miller; the story is narrated as it was seen through his words and feelings. However, the essential element of poetry is the water, flowing, speaking and singing. The poems are very delicate and full of nuances. Schubert has fully captured their spirit: the music complements and enriches the poetic part.

The Wieneer Heurigen Opern- und Musikfestival, a Viennese wine tavern festival for opera and music, has existed since 2001 and its organisation was taken over by the Jedlersdorf Culture Society in 2014.

The society’s aims include the preservation, spread, further development and encouragement of classical and modern music, musical theatre, performing arts and literature, as well as the support of all initiatives to pursue these goals. The “Wiener Heurigen Opern- und Musikfestival” presents top-class artists in the casual, friendly atmosphere created by Vienna’s best vineyards. The programme entails entire operas, song and aria programmes, instrumental music, piano performances and chamber music. With its annual charity concert, the “Wiener Heurigen Opernund Musikfestival”, its participating artists and the Jedlersdorf Culture Society give aid to children in need.

Off I

due appuntamenti OFF si collocano appunto fuori dall’ambito delle più note dimore storiche della Regione ed invitano alla scoperta di angoli insoliti del suo territorio. I concerti sono collocati in luoghi ancora più inediti e particolari, ai quali far corrispondere proposte musicali in tono con il contesto ospitante. In questa edizione sono state scelte due location del Friuli centrale (Reana del Rojale e Faedis) interessanti sia da punto di vista paesaggistico che da quello storico e naturalistico.

Sono a breve distanza una dall’altra e collegate anche da piste ciclo-turistiche così da poter abbinare una bella escursione e buona musica. Un’occasione ghiotta per scoprire la produzione tipica (come il cartoccio del Rojale) ed enogastronomica (il Refosco di Faedis) dei luoghi proposti. Tutto accompagnato da programmi musicali che abbinano brani classici ad altri più moderni in modo da rendere l’ascolto piacevole per tutti. Un richiamo agli strumenti a fiato (tromboni e clarinetti) delle bande musicali che nel territorio hanno ancora oggi un ruolo fondamentale per la trasmissione della cultura musicale.

he two OFF events take place outside the most famous historical mansions of Friuli Venezia Giulia: an invitation to discover less known locations, hidden treasures of the region. The concerts are set in even more unusual and atypical sceneries, where the music can match and harmonise the special atmosphere of the place. For this edition two locations have been elected, both in the central part of Friuli, both extremely interesting for their naturalistic and historical features: Reana del Rojale and Faedis. These two small towns are not very distant from each other, and are connected by cycle lanes: the best occasion for a pleasant excursion, paired with some exquisite music.

Moreover, a wonderful opportunity to discover the typical arts and crafts of the area (such as the cartoccio del Rojale, a particular way to braid and manufacture corn leaves), as well as the excellent wines (the Refosco of Faedis).

These explorations will be accompanied by musical programmes combining classical music to more modern executions, in order to please every taste. A reference and an inspiration to wind instruments (trombones and clarinets) of the brass bands, which have a crucial role in the transmission of the musical education to this day.

Fu la dimora dell’ultimo doge di Venezia, Ludovico Manin, e nel 1797 ospitò per circa due mesi Napoleone la splendida Villa Manin, gioiello dell’architettura veneta in Friuli, situata a Passariano (Udine). Restaurata negli anni sessanta, la villa è un complesso monumentale sorto nel Cinquecento per volere del nobile Antonio Manin che v’impiantò un’azienda agri-

cola ponendovi al centro una casa padronale. L’ampio parco posteriore sembra dovuto alla volontà del “maestro di casa”. Il nipote Ludovico la trasformerà in un complesso organico. Nel 1962 la villa passò in proprietà all’Ente Ville Venete che iniziò a restaurarla. Il Comune di Udine su progetto di Aldo Rizzi, direttore dei Civici Musei, pensò di farne una sede di

grandi mostre. L’idea trovò il sostegno della Regione Autonoma Friuli-Venezia Giulia che nel 1969 aveva acquistato la villa. Rizzi, che ne fu conservatore, vi organizzò nel 1971 la memorabile mostra inaugurale del Tiepolo e creò dopo il terremoto del 1976 la Scuola del Restauro che ha salvato numerosi capolavori d’arte.

It was the dwelling of the last doge of Venice, Ludovico Manin, and in 1979 hosted for about two months Napoleon. The stunning Villa Manin, located in Passariano (Udine), is a precious jewel of the Venetian architecture in Friuli. Refurbished in the 60’s, the villa is a monumental historical complex built in the XVI century in obedience to the wishes of the nobleman Antonio Manin, who established a

farm, placing a patrician house at the heart of it. The vast park on the back of the building was probably desired by the “master of the house”. Later on, his grandson Ludovico turned it into an organic complex. In 1962 the villa was given into custody to the Authority for the Venetian Villas, which started the renovation. The administration of Udine, following the designs of Aldo Rizzi - director of the City

Museums - decided to use the building as a prestigious location for important art exhibitions. This idea met the enthusiasm of the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, which in 1969 acquired the villa.

Rizzi, the curator, organised in 1971 the memorable opening exhibition of the Tiepolo and founded - after the earthquake of 1976 - the Academy of Restoration that helped to save various art masterpieces.

Simbolo di Trieste il castello di San Giusto è una fortezza situata sul colle omonimo, accanto alla Basilica. E’ stato restaurato nel Duemila e adibito a museo della municipalità. Federico III d’Asburgo (1415-1493), sotto il cui dominio Trieste si trovava, non sostenne nella guerra contro i veneziani, la città, che disconobbe l’autorità imperiale. La punizione fu

esemplare nel 1469 l’anno della “distruzione di Trieste” che dovette costruire a proprie spese una fortezza per i vincitori. Nei primi anni del XVI secolo, quando la città passò temporaneamente sotto il dominio veneziano, questa prima costruzione fu prolungata con un’alta muraglia semicircolare. Dopo il ritorno dell’Impero Austro-Ungarico fu aggiunto il bastione a su-

dest. Dopo il bombardamento francese della città nel 1702, si comprese che un’enorme fortezza non aveva più senso. Solo nel 1930, passata Trieste all’Italia, le autorità individuarono l’opportunità turistica del sito e l’imponente Cortile delle Milizie divenne sede privilegiata per le manifestazioni delle estati triestine.

Symbol of the city Trieste, the Castle of San Giusto is a fortress located on the hill of the same name, next to the Basilica. It was restored in year 2000 and designated as museum of the municipality. Frederick III of Habsburg (1415-1493), under whose rule Trieste was does not sustained in the war against the Venetians the city, which disowned the imperial authority. The

punishment was exemplary; in 1469 the year of the “destruction of Trieste”, the city had to build at his own expenses, a fortress for the winners. In the early 16th century, when the city passed temporarily under Venetian rule, this first building was extended with a high semicircular wall. After the return of the Austro-Hungarian Empire it was added a bastion in south-east. After

the French bombing of the city in 1702, it was realized that an enormous fortress did not make sense anymore. Only in 1930, Trieste (was already part of Italy) the authorities spotted the touristic opportunities of the site and the imposing courtyard of the castle became a forum for the summer events of the city.

L’Abbazia di Santa Maria in Sylvis a Sesto al Reghena (PN), come il convento di Benediktbeuern, fu fondata dai benedettini nella prima metà dell’ottavo secolo ed ebbe grandissima importanza sia come centro religioso sia secolare, da cui l’aspetto di castello fortificato che la caratterizza. I “Carmina Burana” sono qui eseguiti per la prima volta. Santa Maria in

Sylvis, così chiamata perché anticamente si trovava in un fitto bosco, è uno dei centri benedettini più importanti del Friuli. Fu costruita dai fratelli Erfo, Anto e Marco, membri di una nobile famiglia longobarda, molto legata ai regnanti di Cividale, poi distrutta dall’invasione degli Ungari, ma ricostruita verso la fine del decimo secolo. Alcuni scavi che

hanno rinvenuto un edificio precedente e alcune tombe.

E’ un’abbazia “fortificata”, presenta, infatti, un fossato che la circonda completamente e mura alternate da sette torri delle quali oggi rimane solo quella di accesso.

Il ruscelletto che la circonda, oltre a difenderla, ha un chiaro richiamo simbolico alla “difesa spirituale”.

The Abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis in Sesto al Reghena (PN), like the monastery of Benediktbeuern (Germany), was founded by the Benedictines during the first half of the 8th century and had a great importance both as a religious and a secular centre - therefore it has the features of a fortified castle.

The “Carmina Burana” will be performed here for the first time. Santa Maria in

Sylvis, bearing this name because it once stood in a dense forest, is one of the most important Benedictine centres of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It was built by the brothers Erfo, Anto and Marco, members of a noble Langobardic family, closely linked to the rulers of Cividale. It was later destroyed by the Hungarians, and then rebuilt in the late 10th Century. Some excavations

have revealed an earlier building and some graves.

It is a “fortified” abbey, with a trench surrounding it completely, and walls alternating with seven towers, of which the only one remaining is the entrance tower. A small stream that surrounds it, other than a way of military defence, is also a clear symbol of a “spiritual defence”.

La villa Castello Fortezza che si trova dal 1600 al centro della proprietà, sorge sopra resti risalenti al XII secolo. Durante la Prima

Guerra Mondiale la tenuta fu utilizzata dal comando della III Armata del generale Cadorna. Generali e soldati italiani, austriaci, ungheresi, rumeni e russi combatterono in questa terra. Da alcuni anni l’Associazione Amici di Castelnuovo si dedica al recupero delle memorie della Grande Guerra: fra queste è la creazione del parco letterario Ungaretti che proprio qui

scrisse le poesie de “Il porto sepolto”. La Villa della Torre Hohenlohe, secondo alcune fonti, ospitò per qualche giorno Liszt nel 1869. Qui egli suonò per la famiglia le improvvisazioni sui temi viennesi che aveva eseguito per Napoleone III e un dopopranzo nel boudoir bianco si era esercitato su una sonata di Beethoven.

Castelnuovo rises up just above Sagrado, on Gorizia Karst. The view is unique and in certain days it embraces the entire region.

The beautiful landscape variations blend with its noble and ancient origins.

The villa Castello Fortezza is located in the centre of the property since 1600, rising up on pre-existing ruins that date back to the 12th century. During the First World War the estate

was used as headquarters of the Third Italian Army of General Cadorna. Italian, Austrian, Hungarian, Romanian and Russian soldiers fought on this land.

For some years now, the association “Friends of Castelnuovo” has been working devotedly to recover the memory of the Great War: one of these activities is creating a literary park dedicated to Giuseppe Ungaretti. The poet wrote here the verses

of “The buried Port”. The Villa della Torre Hohenlohe, according to some sources, hosted Franz Liszt for a few days in 1869. There he played some improvisations on Viennese themes for the Hohenlohe family – the same music he had played for Napoleon the III, and spent an afternoon practicing a Beethoven sonata in a white boudoir.

Il Castello di Miramare e il suo parco sorsero per volontà di Ferdinando Massimiliano d’Asburgo (1832-1867), fratello minore dell’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe. Giunto a Trieste quale ufficiale e poi nominato comandante in capo della flotta militare austriaca, l’arciduca decise di creare un parco sul promontorio di Grignano, sperone

roccioso di origine carsica, privo di vegetazione, e di farsi costruire sul mare una residenza. Progettata nel 1856 da Carl Junker, essa fu terminata nell’aspetto esterno nel 1860; la sistemazione dell’arredo e la decorazione interna, opera di Franz e Julius Hofmann, furono ultimate dopo la partenza di Massimiliano per il Messico

nel 1864. Nominato imperatore del paese centroamericano, egli venne fucilato nel giugno 1867 a Querètaro. Il castello, unica testimonianza della presenza dell’arciduca a Trieste, conserva mobili originari dell’epoca e una decorazione consona alle tendenze eclettiche del tempo.

The castle of Miramare and its park were built by the will of Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg (18321867), the Emperor Franz Joseph’s younger brother.

He had arrived to Trieste as an officer and was later appointed as commander in chief of the Austrian navy.

The Archduke soon decided to create a park on the promontory of Grignano, a

rocky spur of Karst without vegetation, and over there he also built himself a residence on the sea. Designed in 1856 by Carl Junker, the exterior was finished in 1860; however, the arrangement of the furniture and interior decoration by Franz and Julius Hofmann were completed after Maximilian’s departure for Mexico in 1864. The appointed

Emperor of the Central American country, he was executed in June 1867 in Querètaro. The castle is the only testimony of the Archduke’s presence in Trieste; the building still stores the original vintage furniture, along with the typical decorations in harmony with the eclectic taste of the period.

Il Castello di Duino (Ts), da cui si gode un magnifico panorama sulle ripide pareti a strapiombo sull’Adriatico, fu proprietà della famiglia Della Torre prima e dei principi della Torre Tasso poi.

Vi soggiornò Rainer Maria Rilke che vi compose parte delle celebri “Elegie Duinesi”. Il castello fu costruito sulle rovine di un avamposto romano e ingloba una torre

del XVI secolo. Creato primo duca di Castel Duino dal re d’Italia Vittorio Emanuele III di Savoia, Alessandro, nato nel 1881, ereditò a sua volta il maniero e si naturalizzò italiano nel 1923 assumendo per sé e per i suoi discendenti il cognome della Torre e Tasso. Nel castello Rilke ideò e iniziò nel 1912 le “Elegie Duinesi” mentre era in visita dalla principessa Maria nata

Hohenlohe. A ricordo è stato intitolato al poeta anche un sentiero panoramico inaugurato dopo i lavori di restauro del 1987. Al castello è legata la leggenda della Dama bianca, la moglie di uno dei signori del castello, gettata nel mare e quindi trasformata in roccia visibile oggi nella baia, di fronte alla costa.

The Castle of Duino (Ts), with its magnificent view of the steep cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea, had belonged to the Del Torre family before, and to the nobles of Torre Tasso later. Rainer Maria Rilke sojourned in its rooms and composed in this fascinating location part of the renowned “Elegie Duinesi”. The castle was built on the foundations of a former Roman outpost and embraces also a tower from

the XVI Century. Alessandro, born in 1881 and elected first Duke of Duino by the King Vittorio Emanuele III di Savoia, inherited the fortress and became an Italian citizen in 1923 acquiring for himself and his descendants the surname “Torre e Tasso”. In the castle Rilke came up with an idea and then started writing the “Elegie Duinesi” in 1912, while he was visiting Princess Maria, born Hohenlohe. To

celebrate and remember the poet, a panoramic pathway was created and inaugurated in 1987, after the restoration. There is also a legend intertwined with the story of the castle: it is the legend of the “White Lady”.

She was the wife of one of the noblemen of the castle, and she was thrown into the sea and then transformed into a stone. The rocks are still visible today on the bay, facing the coast.

Reana del Rojale è un comune formato da nove piccoli borghi sulle rogge, canali artificiali costruiti nel Medioevo per rifornire d’acqua la città di Udine e più tardi di Palmanova. Sui corsi d’acqua si svilupparono numerose attività artigianali come quella del fabbro e della macinazione grazie

all’energia dei mulini che ancora puntellano il territorio. Alcuni di essi, come il Mulino di Giusto, sono ancora funzionanti.

Una pista ciclabile permette di seguire il corso delle rogge unendosi poi nell’abitato di Savorgnano alla pista “Rogge e Castelli”.

Reana del Rojale is a small municipality, formed of nine little villages built on the “rogge”, the artificial canals dug during the Middle Ages to supply water to the city of Udine, and later to Palmanova. On these creeks many craft works, such as smithing and grinding, blossomed, thanks to the

energy of the mills that mark the territory to this day. Some of them, such as the mill Di Giusto, are still functioning. A bike path enables following the route of the streams to the village of Savorgnano del Torre, where it connects with the track “Rogge and Castles”.

Faedis fa parte della terra dei castelli, infatti ben tre di notevole importanza sorgono sul suo territorio: Cucagna, Zucco e Soffumbergo. Non meno interessanti sono le numerose chiese e le ville Freschi e Partistagno.

La maggior parte delle costruzioni si attesta tra il XI e il XVII secolo. Una così grande presenza di opere

d’arte è probabilmente da ricondurre all’importanza di questa zona, a partire dagli anni del Patriarcato di Aquileia, dovuta alla nobile famiglia dei Cucagna che, sebbene causa di guerre e distruzioni per la popolazione, diede notevole impulso allo sviluppo dell’arte nella zona.

Faedis is a part of the “land of castles”, with the three notable forts of Cucagna, Zucco and Soffumbergo rising up on its territory.

Oggi l’Associazione collabora abitualmente con operatori turistici, agenzie di viaggio, associazioni culturali, Pro Loco, istituti scolastici, enti pubblici e privati, aziende, garantendo disponibilità a coloro che desiderano approfondire la conoscenza della Regione avvalendosi di una figura professionale. Le richieste di visita guidata possono trovare origine anche al di fuori dell’ambito nazionale provenendo da un bacino d’utenza straniero, in particolar modo, dai paesi di lingua tedesca.

L’Associazione è in grado di offrire servizi di visita guidata nelle principali lingue europee tra cui francese, spagnolo, sloveno, croato, russo oltre ovviamente a quelle più richieste come il tedesco e l’inglese.

La nostra attività, comunque, non si limita a soddisfare solo richieste di itinerari consolidati che coinvolgono i circuiti classici, bensì promuove il territorio proponendo mete che altrimenti resterebbero poco conosciute, oppure itinerari alternativi come possono essere le visite tematiche e tour enogastronomici.

L’Associazione è stata e continua ad essere presente per illustrare le principali grandi mostre organizzate in contenitori prestigiosi come Villa Manin di Passariano, presso le Scuderie del Castello di Miramare o presso i Musei Civici di Udine e Gorizia, ecc.

We usually work with tour operators, travel agencies, cultural associations, schools and private companies. We offer guided tours in many different European languages, i.e. French, Spanish, Slovene, Croatian, Russian besides the more popular English and German.

Our activity spans from standard destinations to more tailor-made itineraries focusing on particular themes (i.e. food, wine making and wine tasting, temporary exhibitions etc.). In addition, we can also offer tour leading services in the neighbouring areas like Slovenia, Croatia, Austria and other Italian regions.

During the past years, we have enjoyed a continous increase in our activity thanks to the growing flow of people that have chosen us to appreciate and to discover our surprising region.

BigliettiTickets I biglietti possono essere ordinati via posta ordinaria, via telefono, online o ai punti vendita del circuito Charta by Vivaticket. La biglietteria apre un’ora prima dello spettacolo.

Per ragioni organizzative i biglietti ridotti possono essere prenotati via mail a info@ piccolofestival.org oppure telefonicamente allo +39 366 42 18 001 e poi ritirati di persona in biglietteria a partire da un’ora prima dello spettacolo. I bambini dai 6 anni in su sono autorizzati a partecipare agli spettacoli del Piccolo Festival.

Sconti e riduzioni Studenti e scolari (dai 6 ai 26 anni) Per ogni evento, un certo numero di biglietti è riservato per studenti e scolari. Come regola generale, lo sconto è del 50% (prezzo minimo del biglietto euro 5 per i concerti e 10 per l’opera). Nel secondo settore è possibile acquistare un numero illimitato di biglietti.

Per poter beneficiare di un biglietto a prezzo ridotto nel primo settore, è necessario acquistare almeno un biglietto a prezzo pieno. Lo sconto è applicabile con documento d’identità e o tessera studente.

FVG Card Possessori della FVG Card ricevono uno sconto del 10% su un massimo di due biglietti.

Sedie a rotelle Il Piccolo Festival riserva spazi appositi per gli spettatori in sedia a rotelle e la persona che li accompagna. I biglietti per sedia a rotelle e l’accompagnatore costano fino al 30% in meno.

(aged 6 to 26 years old) For each event, a certain number of tickets are reserved for students and pupils.
