iLAB Siquijor: Igniting Isla de Fuego on FIRe

On its third day, workshop Graphic Designer and Creative Enteepreneur AJ Dimarucot taught the students how to be OFWs (online Filipino workers) and get paid in dollars. “One of my personal goals this year is to start going grassroots in change-making for Filipinos all over the country. And it starts with planting seeds into the minds of young students in the provinces, where the general belief is that they are inadequate, or “not ready,” AJ said in his iLabSiquijor FB post. With his dream of making all become OFWs, he said “there is no need to export people when we can export ideas and creative products. “Because there is an abundance of opportunities online for designers/creatives and entrepreneur,” he said to his students while inspiring them to “one day, to claim their rightful share of the world.” Day four is about Entrepreneurship on iLab Creative Siquijor Workshop where the students learn how to produce great designs and print them on tee shirts with Founder and CEO of Uniform Solutions Jonas Quilantang. Day five is on Branding and Brand Designs process with Managing Creative Director of Innovative Hub (iHub) and program director/CCO of NS Network Rico Bicero. Last day of the workshop series is on May 31, which tackles Branding and New Media Strategy focusing on how to implement branding and social media strategies in business with Brand Strategist and NS Mentor Eunice Enrera. “I am thankful that they teamed up with us because my number one goal right now is to produce designers, at least one, or maybe all of these students. We are connecting them to our local producers to make their logo designs, and labelling and packaging to improve, Gonzalez also said. On the other hand she said she is hoping to turn the students to online Filipino workers (OFWs), at the same time give them the opportunity to be connected with the mentors. “It’s so cool, Ma, I am learning a lot. Makatabang gyud ni nako” (this will really

help me) says Chiara, an incoming Grade 11 who said she has special interest on arts and designs, as she braggingly showed her mother her creation each day— from comic, t-shirts, mugs, to logo designs and branding. Coupled with the mentors’ encouragement, her eagerness is very apparent when she refuses to miss a day of the series even with her enrolment schedule, and her excitement to do the homeworks to present, explain and defend the next day. But Gonzalez added that May 31 is not the end, it is the beginning of their mentoring. It is just a teaser of what we will be expecting next year for iLab Siquijor, she quipped. iLAB Siquijor: Igniting Isla de Fuego on FIRe

There is no turning back for the island of Siquijor, also known as Isla de Fuego or the Island of Fire. Gone were those days when local folks and younger generations settle for mediocrity above excellence. Now, as creative revolution is happening right here and now on this small yet booming island, people are staring to get lit. With the theme, “Turning doodles to dollars,” this innovation is bound to empower and inspire Siquijodnons, unveil in them the passion and creativity, as it readies to put Isla de Fuego on FIRe (Fourth Industrial Revolution). Dubbed iLAB (innovation Laboratory) Creative Siquijor, the workshop series is brought to the island by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through its Innovation Ecosystem Development Program in partnership with Provincial Government of Siquijor, Siquijor State College (SSC) and NS (new school) network. It consists of lectures, mentoring and workshop, that is aimed at spurring economic growth by empowering innovators, start-ups and entrepreneurs with opportunities in the global market by equipping them a creative mindset and way of thinking and to learn new essential digital skills, echoed provincial director Angeline Pauline C. Gonzalez of the DTI here. “This creative workshop is very timely because we want to develop or enhance our local artists and students in the hope that they will be the future designers of Siquijor,” said Gonzalez noting that the idea stems from the fact that everytime the DTI regional office asks for designers, Siquijor has no one to present. Workshop mentors and speakers are chief executive officers (CEOs) from HMT studios and NS Network, founder and CEO of Uniform Solutions, Graphic Designer and Creative Entrepreneur, Managing Creative Director of the Innovation Hub and COO of NS network, Brand Strategist and NS mentor.
