SIQUIJOR, Apr. 30 (PIA)– All is set for May 13 elections in Siquijor province. At least for the Provincial Joint Security Control Center (PJSCC) spearheaded by the Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) here, final security preparations and deployment of personnel has been finalized to ensure peaceful and orderly elections, come May 13. The Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) said at the PJSCC Meeting, April 29, that it has 761 personnel including barangay tanods, ready for deployment for the elections. Mobilization of barangay tanods is considered one of the province’s best practices that encourage community participation, SPPO Provincial Director P/Col Angela Rejano said while calling for multilateral cooperation in its conduct of intensified police operations and monitoring. This, despite Siquijor Island being put under Green Category, she said. According to the SPPO, at least 96 firearms were surrendered and deposited while two were siezed or recovered by the Siquijor Police
Provincial Office (SPPO) from January to April 21 this year. The firearms were also presented to the PJSCC during the meeting. The Philippine Army has revealed it has monitored no terrorist or private armed groups that threaten Siquijor Island. 1Lt. Arnel T. Ybanez, Platoon leader, 47th IB, 3ID of the Philippine Army said Siquijor Island is generally peaceful and remains insurgency-free, but asked the line agencies and the locals to be watchful and vigilant at all times. He underscored the need to intensify Barangay Information Networks (BINs) to monitor the activities in the barangays. Rejano also committed to provide security to the power plant and globe and smart cell sites in the island and secure pathways, entrance and exits of voting centers. Entrance and exits other than those designated by Comelec must be blocked and entry of motor vehicles in schools/voting centers must be regulated as part of the security measures, Rejano said. The SPPO will also double
check all vehicles through checkpoints. Commission on Elections (Comelec) Provincial Supevisor Lawyer Lionel Marco Castillano said the Siquijor Island Power Corporation (Sipcor) has assured him of enough power supply and no power interruptions following completion of its maintenance operation last May 5. He shared that Sipcor has acquired another backup generator because the previous backup has been used as the main generator due to the increasing power demand in the province. Castillano said that there will be a centralized final Testing and Sealing on May 9 in one designated center in Siquijor which will also serve as the final dry run in the deployment of the security component. Next deployment is on May 13. Setting up of Incident Command Posts (ICPs), Police Assistance Desks, Medical Assistance Centers are also included in the contingency plans to ensure readiness and preparedness on any emergency situation. Apart from Barangay Tanods, the PJSCC also mobilized Barangay Health Workers (rac/PIA-7-Siquijor)
CEBU, Apr. 29 (PIA)--Economic growth in the region has reaped fruits benefitting the poor as poverty incidence among families in Central Visayas dipped in the first half of 2018, based on the figures of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-7. Efren Carreon, regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-7 said poverty incidence in the region from January to June last year was recorded at 19 percent, down from 28.5 percent in 2015. Early this month, PSA-7 released the first semester 2018 poverty estimates. “The biggest reduction, of more than 39 percentage points, was noted in Siquijor. The province registered the biggest drop in poverty incidence among families not only in the region, but among all provinces in the country,” said Carreon during the recent news conference on the Report on the Economic Performance of Central Visayas 2018. Carreon said the 19 percent poverty incidence rate was the target for 2020 based on the Regional Development Plan (RDP) 2017-2022. “Thus, we are able to reach our poverty reduction target two years ahead of schedule,” he added. Likewise, the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) growth of Region 7 for 2018 also surpassed its target from 7.4 percent as contained in the RDP 2017-2022 to an actual growth of 7.6 percent, said Carreon. The 7.6 percent GRDP growth makes Central Visayas the fourth largest economy in the country contributing to 6.5 percent to the country’s total economic output, said Carreon. The Industry Sector registered the highest growth in 2018 driven by manufacturing and construction subsectors, posting an increase of 14.3
