The community were then explained to give their consent to publish or not to publish relevant information pertaining to the traditional medicines located in their community. Dr. Mansueto explained that the team needed the approval of the local healers and the community to post the information on the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library on Health. In the end, the folk healers and the local community agreed to publish the needed information on the internet. To note, Siquijor State College is currently conducting the third phase of the research on Folk Healing Practices of Siquijor: Documentation of Philippine Traditional Knowledge and Practices on Health and Development of Traditional Knowledge Digital Library on Health. SIQUIJOR (PIA) —The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) strengthened its advocacy on environmental protection through an environmental awareness forum for 83 school heads in the province. Held at the GAD Training Hall, Siquijor, Siquijor, the forum is in line with the implementation of DENR’s Communicaton Education and Public Awareness (CEPA). Ecosystem Management Senior Officer of DENR, Paul Tomogsoc, said the activity aims to provide the school heads with relevant information on environmental laws, specifically on prohibited acts, penal provisions, and permit requirements applicable within Siquijor province. During the forum, DENR division heads took turns discussing PD 705 and permit requirements, Chainsaw Act, Cave Conservation, Management Act, Solid Waste Management Act, Clean Water Act, and the Mining Act. According to Tomogsoc, the activity is part of the intensified projects of DENR to protect and conserve the environment of Siquijor as it hopes to cascade awareness to the students through the school heads. He added that these intensified measures will help counter the ill-effects of climate change Another measure is the implementation of the Landscape and Wildlife Indicators (LAWIN) System that closely relates with biodiversity monitoring supported by a series of trainings and issuance of needed gadgets. The participants also signed the commitment to care and protect the biodiversity of Siquijor. Meanwhile, the government is calling for the public to observe proper solid waste management. SSC, DOST hold traditional health workshop in Lazi SIQUIJOR, Jan 29 (PIA)-Siquijor State College (SSC) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Siquijor Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) conducted a series of community education workshops on traditional health practices knowledge (THK) and sessions on intellectual property (IP) rights as part of the research paper conducted by SSC. The event took place on January 11, 18, and 25, 2019, in three different barangays: Nagerong, Simacolong and Tigbawan in the municipality of Lazi where traditional health practices had been widely practiced and where there is abundant source of traditional health medicines. SSC through its project leader Dr. Josel Mansueto organized the event and was supported by DOST Siquijor PSTC through Provincial Science and
Technology Director (PSTD) Engr. Mario de la Peña. As part of the education, transparency and acquisition of consent to share the information to the public, a community education workshop on community health was organized with the communities involved. On another development, the government taught the local community the basics of intellectual property rights and explained how these laws can be applied to the traditional health practices. Atty. Gilbert Arbon, PSTD of DOST Negros Oriental, served as the resource speaker who gave a presentation on the topic. After the discussion, Dr. Mansueto along with project assistants showed to the local community the output of their research during the “pangalap season”. to page 4
