DTI releases school supplies’ Gabay sa Pamimili

SIQUIJOR (PIA) —The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Siquijor published its “Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies 2018,” about two weeks before the opening of classes, the agency announced in a press statement.

Pauline Gonzales said the DTI releases this price guide every year to assist consumers in their purchase of school items.

The suggested retail price (SRP) list covers specific brands of notebook, pad paper, pencil and ball pen, crayon, eraser, sharpener, and ruler.

For this year, several brands of notebooks and pad papers increased their prices due to the high cost of raw materials imported from China and the depreciation of Peso value against U.S dollar, Gonzales explained.

DOST to LGUs: ‘Disaster imagination’ is key to better preparedness

(PIA) -- Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Dr. Renato Solidum reiterated to Local Government Unit (LGU) officials and businesses that having a concept of disaster imagination is the key for better disaster preparedness.

“The key is anticipation. You don’t need to know the hundred percent accuracy of things but you have to imagine the possible consequences.

Are you convinced that if you are able to anticipate you can prepare better?” Solidum emphasized in his talk during the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Geo-hazards and Business Continuity Forum held June 8 here.

The event was organized by DOST-Negros Oriental and was attended by representatives from LGUs, line agencies from national government agencies, private sector, and business community in the city.

Be there for someone else, give blood, share life

GENEVA, Switzerland, June 13 -- Every year, on June 14 , countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need.

Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and child care and during the emergency response to man-made and natural disasters.

A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. An adequate supply can only be ensured through regular donations by voluntary, unpaid blood donors. However, in many countries, blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety.

The SRPs of some brands of composition, writing and spiral notebooks (Advance, Topline, Best Buy, Pandayan, Papelikha, Orions, and Veco) increased

by Php 1.00 to Php 4.00.

Merit, on the other, did not increase its prices.

Composition and writing notebooks are still priced at Php 12.75 (without plastic cover) and Php 34.00 (with plastic cover) while their spiral notebook without plastic cover is still priced at Php 19.00.

Similarly, some brands of writing pad papers (grade 1-4) (Easywrite, Best Buy, Sakura, Pandayan, Papelikha, and Orions) increased by Php 0.50 to Php 6.00 while for intermediate paper, some brands (Easy write, Best, Best Buy (book paper), Pandayan, Papellikha and Orions) raised their prices by Php 1.75 to Php 5.00.

Despite these increases, Merit’s writing and intermediate pads are still at Php 12.00 and Php 25.00, respectively.

Likewise, Best Buy’s intermediate (bond paper) pad paper is still priced at Php 18.00.

Meanwhile, two brands of a pencil (Best buy and Pandayan) recorded an increase of Php 4.50 and Php 1.00, respectively, while the other brands maintained their last year’s prices.

Generally, some brands of ball pens did not increase their prices since last year except for Marvy, Avanti and Pentel which implemented an increase

by Php 1.00 to Php 6.00.

For crayons, HBW Jumbo No. 8 decreased its price by Php 11.00 while other brands (Crayola, Li’l hands, Faber Castell, HBW, Best Buy and Pandayan) did not change their prices since last year.

However, brands such as Sterling and Colleen increased their prices by Php 2.00 to Php 10.00 for boxes of Regular No. 8, Regular No. 16, and Regular No. 24 and Jumbo 8.

There were no recorded price movements for sharpener while one brand of an eraser (Orions) increased by Php 2.00.

For a ruler, Orions increased by Php 3.00 while Php 2.00 for Sterling.

“There have been increases in some staples but consumers can check for school items sold in bundle or promo packs which can help them save Php 30.75 depending on the brand,” Consumer Protection Group (CPG) Undersecretary Atty. Ruth B. Castelo said.

She also added that based on their discussions with paper manufacturers, there will be no more price increases until December 2018.

The Gabay sa Pamimili ng School Supplies was published last 12 May 2018 in Philippine Daily Inquirer and Pilipino Star Ngayon and is already posted on the DTI’s e- Presyo, which can be accessed through www.e-presyo.dti.gov. ph or be downloaded from Play Store using any Android device.

The DTI intensifies its monitoring activities to ensure that prices of school supplies are stable.

Focus of this year’s campaign

The theme of this year’s campaign is blood donation as an action of solidarity. It highlights the fundamental human values of altruism, respect, empathy and kindness which underline and sustain voluntary unpaid blood donation systems. We have adopted the slogan, “Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life”, to draw attention to the roles that voluntary donation systems play in encouraging people to care for one another and generate social ties and a united community.

The campaign aims to highlight stories of people whose lives have been saved through blood donation, as a way of motivating regular blood donors to continue giving blood, and to motivate people in good health who have never given blood to begin doing so, particularly young people.

Activities may include commemorative events, meetings, publication of relevant stories, scientific conferences, publication of articles in national, regional and international scientific journals, and other activities that would help in promoting the theme of this year’s World Blood Donor Day. The objectives of this year’s campaign

* to celebrate and thank individuals who donate blood and to encourage those who have not yet donated blood to start donating;

* to raise wider awareness that blood donation is an altruistic action that benefits all of society and that an adequate supply can only be ensured through regular donations by voluntary, unpaid blood donors;

* to highlight the need for committed, yearround blood donation, in order to maintain adequate supplies and achieve national self-sufficiency of blood;

* to focus attention on blood donation as an expression of community participation in the health system, and the importance of community participation in maintaining sufficient, safe and sustainable blood supplies;

* to promote the community values of blood donation in enhancing community solidarity and social cohesion and in in encouraging people to care for one another and build a caring community;

* to promote international collaboration and ensure worldwide dissemination of and consensus on the principles of voluntary nonremunerated donation, while increasing blood safety and availability (WHO)

DENR7 EMB mipagawas labaw sa P15M ayuda alang sa mga programa sa SWM

(PIA)—Labaw sa P15 milyones nga mga ayuda ang gipang apod apod sa Department of Environment and Natural Resources 7 dinhi sa rehiyon alang sa mga programa sa basura o solid waste management.

Sa bag-ohay lang nga gipahigayon nga Kapihan sa PIA-Cebu, mibatbat ang nangulo sa responsableng ahensya ang Environmental Management Bureau nga si Engr. William Cunado nga duol sa P20 milyones nga klase klase nga mga ayuda ang gipang apod apod nila sa unang tunga sa tuig 2018 sa mga dakbayan ug kalungsuran sa Central Visayas.

Kini pinasikad sa tumang pagpatuman sa Republic Act 9003 o ang “Act Providing for the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Program”.

Gawas niana tulo ka mga LGUS sa Sugbo ang nakadawat og Mobile Shredder with Chipper alang sa ilang Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), ang lungsod sa Alcoy, Tabogon, ug ang barangay Bakilid dakbayan sa Mandaue

Kini nagkantidad og P137,700 matag usa.

Sa dili pa mahuman ning buwana, makadawat pod og MRF assistance ang mga lungsod sa Cordova, Daanbantayan, San Remigio, Tabuelan ug dakbayan sa Bogo.

“The hazards do not tell us when they come. Therefore, we should anticipate if they will come, will my house be affected? Will I be affected? Will my family members be affected? If you are the mayor, how many people will be affected? How many will die? Will there be lifelines affected? Ilan ang dapat mong pakainin? (How many people do you have to feed?)” he said.

“We can anticipate things. We can plan ahead. We can prepare our actions today but all game plans that we have are based on what we imagine the hazards will be and how we will be affected,” Solidum added.

Part of the disaster imagination is identifying possible hazards, having pre-assessment on the scale or impact of the calamity by anticipating how many people, houses, or establishments will be affected by the disaster, and identifying which areas will be affected by hazards.

From there, the LGU or the business community can plot their preparedness measures or mitigation measures to lessen the impact of the hazards.

Furthermore, LGUs should also have an impact damage scenario wherein

it will identify the impact of calamities to critical facilities such as hospitals, airports, etc., which are essential for LGU operations after a disaster strikes and plan steps to respond immediately after that.

Apart from this, the DOST official also delivered a lecture on managing risks of earthquakes, eruptions, landslides, sinkholes, landslides, and tsunamis for business continuity and resilience wherein he presented the geologic hazard map around Negros Island developed by PHIVOLCS.

He noted that the West Panay Fault, Negros Trench, East Negros Fault System which includes the Central Negros Fault, West Negros Fault, Candoni Fault, and Sibulan Fault, and also faults in Cebu and Bohol are potential earthquake generators in Negros Island.

On the other hand, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) Executive Director Adrian Sedillo disclosed that the activity is done in partnership with the DOST to connect experts from national government agencies with LGU officials and inform them on the developments in relation to disaster risk reduction and management. Nipasidaan si DOLE- Policy and Program Development Division Chief Nicanor Bon nga ilegal kini ug may tukmang silot base sa Republic Act 10911 o Anti-Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
