Renal Youth Worker
Information for patients
‘My name is Gemma Hockey and I have worked with Renal patients for 5 years. I am a qualified youth worker, I have a passion for supporting young people through their renal journey. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, I would be very happy to hear from you.’

Specialist Support
This leaflet can be made available in another language, large print or another format. Please speak to the Ward Manager who can advise you
Who we are?
‘Hello, I am the Adult Renal Youth Worker within the WKC at Queen Alexandra Hospital. My role is to help and support young adults with any issues either related to or unrelated to their underlying renal condition. This leaflet will help to explain some of the areas that I am able to provide support.’
Individual Support and advice:
• Accompanying you to a clinic appointment
• Providing personal advice on health, education and family issues
• Providing guidance on any benefits you may be entitled to as a result of your kidney condition
• Helping you to update your CV, fill out job applications or look into options for voluntary work
If I do not know the answer, I will put you in contact with someone who does. Sometimes it is simply a case of having someone to talk to in confidence about anything that may be troubling you, whether that be at home, College/ University, or at work or to do with your illness. This is central to my work.
If appropriate, I can arrange to visit you at home or meet with you outside of the hospital environment if you would feel more comfortable with that. If you are in hospital, I can come and visit you in the ward if required.
Group Work:
In addition to individual support, I am available to help to coordinate group activities with other young renal patients. This may include social activities or organised outings. I will be able to put you in contact with other young adults who may live in your area or have a similar condition to you.
Showing you round the Renal Unit
Your first visit to the adult unit can be a little daunting. After your clinic visit with the Doctor, I can show you around the unit if you are interested and introduce you to some of the staff who may be looking after you.
Telephone support:
I can call you if you need someone to talk to about any issues that may be concerning you. I may call you to remind you about an upcoming clinic appointment or to check up after a clinic visit if you have asked us to do that.
Talking to parents / carers:
Anything that you discuss with me will be treated in confidence. However, if you need help in facilitating discussion with your parents or carers about issues that may be concerning you, I would be able to do this.
Signposting to other services:
Occasionally we may feel that we are not specifically trained to help you with certain problems e.g. stress or anxiety related to
your condition, dealing with alcohol/drugs etc. In these situations I will direct you to the most appropriate person to help you and I continue to be available to provide support as required.
