1948 The National Health service was created by Aneurin Bevan. 1951 540 of 640 beds from the Alexandra Military Hospital are transferred to the NHS. 1952 Princess Margaret opened a new department. 1958 The hospital gained a chapel. 1952 The League of Friends was formed. 1955 A Cerebral Palsy Unit was built, two classrooms, a Physiotherapy room, and a Speech and Language room.
1948-1960

1961-1980

1969 The hospital opened a library. 1976 Two 9-story blocks were built for staff acommodation. 1962 Patient televisions were installed. 1968 We became a General Hospital with a nursing school. 1962 The League of Friends provided money for two new day rooms for the hospital and the main block was refurbished. 1980 Princess Alexandra officially opened Queen Alexandra Hospital. 1971 Sunshine Radio (now QA Radio) started broadcasting.

1981-2000

1986 Queen Alexandra Hospital featured in BBC’s ‘Hospital Watch’ series. 1983 The Trevor Howell Day Hospital opened. 1987 A new surgical unit was opened. 1988 A new diabetes unit opened. 1997 The Mad Dog Summer Ball raised £43,000 for a new MRI scanner. 1997 Art & Soul Traders painted murals in our B-level restaurant.
2001-2015
2009 The new Queen Alexandra Hospital was opened by Princess Anne. 2004 Plans for a new hospital building were adopted. 2005 Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit was opened. 2014 Portsmouth Hospitals Charity was founded. 2015 We linked with Combat Stress to create a team specialising in treating Service-related mental health issues at QA.

2016-2020

2018 We signed the Armed Forces Covenant. 2017 We signed the Caring For You Charter with the Royal College of Midwives. 2018 Equans took over the Facilities Management Contract at QA. 2018 We were accreddited as Veteran Aware. 2020 We were awarded gold status for supporting the Armed Forces Community. 2020 We were awarded university hospital status. 2020 We opened our vaccination hub giving Covid vaccines to some of it’s first recipients. 2018 The Rocky Appeal raised £2.4 million for a kyehole surgery Da Vinci Robot.

2021-2023

2022 Our research team broke our trial participant record. 2023 Chief Nurse, Professor Liz Rix, was awarded an MBE. 2022 Work began on our new Emergency Department. 2021 We featured in the first series of ‘Nurses on the Ward.’ 2021 Our new Modular Ward was opened. 2021 Executive Director of research, Anoop Chauhan, was awarded an MBE.
