arking its 100 year of existence the Royal Air Force’s National Aircraft Tour, landed in Birmingham as the city’s Victoria Square, was bedecked by examples of the finest aircrafts – past, present and future – with ‘RAF 100 Aircraft Tour’ highlighting its overwhelmingly impressive standing on the world stage, with an amaz-

ing display of full-size replica RAF aircraft on show in front of the city’s Council House.

Visitors were able to get up close to four full-size iconic replica aircrafts, including the new state-of-the-art F35-B Lightning II stealth combat aircraft which has just come into service, as well as the locally-built Battle of Britain stalwart, the Spitfire.

rom JA to UK, community leader, Cliff Cameron has been putting himself forward as the man to get things done.

Passionate about developing children and young people, he has a history of created initiatives for bringing “his people” together with the notion of “moving forward as one.”

In the UK since 2001, he created; Birmingham Youth Empowerment Project, the Birmingham Community Development Scheme, Next Generation Media and Jamaican Ex-Pat Association, to show his determination to making a difference.

Cameron, 55, showcased this with two major events: “We had JamFest in Handsworth Park in 2016 which attracted an estimated 15000,” he said.

“For me that was a huge success.

That withstanding, though,” he went on, “the Security Advisory Group (SAG) – which includes Birmingham City Council and the emergency services (police, fire service and ambulance) had issues; deeming the security – which was something I

outsourced - to be lapsed.

“Citing the presence of drugs and use of a petrol generator, I knew I was up against it.” It meant that his application for BrumFest 2017 would be a difficult one.

“Furthermore, with such a prominent Jamaican presence in the city, there was me; highlighting the very best of Jamaica, but, where was the backing?”

Mr Cameron said that with a lack of support from individuals, businesses, or organisations, they turned down his application in February 2017.

Nevertheless, with very little time, a smaller BrumFest took place at the nearby Laurel Road Community Sports Centre.

“We have to make a stance,” he said, “otherwise we won’t get anywhere.

“I spent £9000 of my own money in fighting legal battles against SAG. Nobody came forward to help or support me and, to date, there’s no support.

“My events are all about engagement.

It’s about making people think and do for themselves.”

ver since Donald Trump announced his presidential run back in 2015, the term ‘fake news’ has been inescapable. Social media and WhatsApp groups have been overwhelmed with fictitious news ranging from rumours of Eminem’s death to the start of World War 3.

Over the past couple of years, many will have heard allegations about Global drinks brand Pepsi, British world foods brand Tropical Sun, and some will even have seen claims that Melania Trump hired an exorcist to cleanse the White House of Obama ‘Demons’!

It seems that not a week goes by without another hoax/scam message of ‘Fake News’ making its way around communities by WhatsApp and other social media outlets.

A warning about HIV-contaminated Pepsi products began spreading on the Internet and via text message, which has also been echoed in recurrent

rumors about Mango Frooti, a popular beverage in India.

A seemingly damning message followed: “I am hearing that someone with HIV at a Pepsi plant has injected their blood into the product during plant production.

“Is this true? Why would they still be selling the product I thought. But some people are saying the news said to not drink it right now.”

These ‘claims’ were refuted by both the company itself and the Centre for Disease Control even issued a statement to the same effect.

Tropical Sun have been the target of persistent rumours that they were lying about producing foods in Jamaica.

However, thanks to investigations by diligent community leaders at the United Midlands Black Organisation (UMBO), we now know these accusations to be entirely false.

With 3 days to go, the event was cancelled (A letter from SAG did say that the Council had nothing to do with the decision); Cliff went on to say “They wanted me to get massive

With technology making fake news increasingly easy to produce and distribute, it is up to each of us to take extra care to investigate news stories before we take them as gospel.

It’s especially important before we share them with our loved ones, or we risk spreading lies to our communities, when the truth is needed more than ever.

Websites such as www.snopes. com, a brilliant depository of fact checking on a wide number of rumours are key in stopping the spread of this misinformation. It only takes a few minutes to google the story you’ve seen or been sent, and you could potentially stop a lot of worry and concern from your family and friends.

“The Jamaican Ex-Pats Association is already putting things into place for JamFest 2019. We need to have dialogue with SAG. “That withstanding…where was our community? I could go back to Jamaica tomorrow and, with my own people’s backing there, will be successful.”

Cliff Cameron, however, is a determined soul and, along with Jamaican Ex Pats Association, is already setting the wheels in motion for BrumFest 2019.

Nigeria to Adopt Chinese Yuan as Reserve Currency

N

igeria has become the latest African country to step up its bid to adopt Chinese yuan as a reserve currency.

Shortly after agreeing a threeyear $2.5 billion currency swap with China to boost its reserves and aid trade between both countries, Nigeria has begun selling Chinese yuan to local traders and businesses.

An underlying motive of the move is to ease the longrunning pressure on Nigeria’s naira currency after a slide against the US dollar since 2015.

Following the drop in global oil prices in 2015, Nigeria’s faced a major dollar shortage as foreign reserves dwindled. International

businesses including airlines were forced to shut down or cut down on flights to the country as the government set up controls to restrict access to dollars.

Funding

The dollar shortage also hobbled local businesses in need of dollars to pay for imports but even though the naira has relatively held steady over the past few months, Nigeria is looking to step up the use of the yuan as an alternative trading currency. Direct trade with yuan, without the hassle of first converting dollars, is aimed at making it easier for local businesses to do business with Chinese counterparts.

It’s an approach other African

countries are taking even as they also look to China for fewer-strings-attached funding and loans. China’s “debt-trap diplomacy” has been criticized however with debt owed to the Asian giant by some African countries spiking. For instance, Kenya’s debt to China has grown tenfold in five years.

The yuan’s prospects as a reserve currency have also grabbed attention beyond Africa.

The International Monetary Fund named the yuan to its basket of reserve currencies as an alternative to the dollar in 2015.

And last year, the European Central Bank converted €500 million worth of its US dollar reserves into the Chinese yuan.

early a decade ago, the question was asked; ‘Can training make a difference to future entrepreneurial activity in the UK’?

Studies have shown that working-age adults’ access to enterprise training has consequential effects on labour market dynamics.

It is assumed that in an ideal setting, owners, directors and managers of firms – micro, small, medium-size and large alike – must endeavour to develop personal, professional and industry capabilities to boost production in their respective businesses.

Principally, this can affect either firms’ competitive advantage or disadvantage in the marketplace of ideas, products and services.

Is there compelling evidence to inform and guide future strategy in this regard? In reviewing the literature on entrepreneurship training, there are vital questions that must be considered in order to fully understand this new phenomenon. For instance, • What type of enterprise training is done in schools today?

• How many persons have access to such orientation at college or university?

• What type of work experience do people have in smaller businesses?

• What types of training have they received from government programmes?

These questions can help to determine models pertaining to aspects of business startups, the thought processes of owner-managers and persons – matured or young - interested in starting future businesses.

Accordingly, there are age variations for working-age citizens who accessed school-

based versus college and university enterprise training (See Figure 1).

These are indicative of the growing contribution that small businesses make to the UK economy. These factors also partly explain their strategic impact on different industry sectors; namely , business and the professions, the sciences and civic entities.

Figure 1 illustrates that over 25% of under-25s received some enterprise training and for under-40s who left school in the 1990s, it was just over 19%.

For under 45s, it is 8% plus.

For over 50s the number receiving such orientation fell sharply.

Therefore, the research shows that enterprise training in schools is a recent trend whilst being an important economic factor for talent improvement in the UK as a whole.

With regard to accessing enterprise education from tertiary institutions, the prevalence amongst college and university ‘attendees’, is relatively high.

For instance, amongst 2534 year olds, 25.39% have received enterprise training from college or university.

Whereas for 18-24 year olds, the figure is 23.27% for higher education institutions and for over 65s, the figure is 9.74%.

The evidence for SME work experience by age category, suggests the following:• Over 50% of 18-34 year olds have had experience in a small firm.

• Over a third of under-45s have similar exposure.

• Those who’re 45 to 65+ years, have an average of 10% experience in firms (Institute of Employment Studies, UK January 2009).

As industry production varies, there is need for better understanding of enterprise training on business startups, job related start-ups, the performance of small business owners and the potential for future start-ups in the UK.

Also on hand were RAF personnel – again past present and future – who were able to lend their experiences, and expectations, of life serving Queen and country.

Two former service personnel on hand were the Reverend Bryan Scott of the nearby Cannon Street Memorial Baptist Church and Don Campbell.

"I’ve always wanted to be

in the military," said retired Warrant Officer Campbell, "and always wanted to see the world."

Rev. Scott added; "I joined the RAF for 3 years – and served 24. It was a fantastic grounding as God was ‘training’ me for the ministry.

It’s something I fully recommend to any young people who are looking for a rewarding career."

Campbell, who has a chauffeur business, is trustee of the National Caribbean Monument Charity which is working to raise £500,000 for a monument which will stand within the grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, in Staffordshire.

He said: "The memorial will uphold and remember their contributions and sacrifices to Britain and create a lasting legacy for present and future generations through educational programmes in schools, churches, community centres and organisations."

Also present was Emma Marianne, who stopped off at Victoria Square during her charity walk - from RAF

St Mawgan to RAF Lossiemouth - to every active RAF Station in mainland UK. Her 2000 miles, 5 months walk to raise funds and awareness for the RAF association. Her son, Jake, is in the RAF and, for what that has done for him, she felt that she just had to give something back – it was also to boost her health.

“I suffered with chronic migraine and my doctor said walking would benefit my health. With Jake joining the RAF as Regiment Gunner and recently graduating Basic Gunner Training at the end of June I felt that I had to ‘thank’ them for what they have done for my son – the focus, the direction and the career.

“Joining the RAF is the best thing that he could possibly have done so my ‘Walk For Wings’ charity walk is to show my gratitude. It’s also the perfect health boost for me.

“Now I’m giving back and supporting The Royal Air Force Association who believes that every generation owes a debt of gratitude to the RAF and their families.

“When someone in the RAF family needs help, the charity they turn to is the Royal Air Forces Association.”

The RAF100 Aircraft Tour was an opportunity to meet members of the Royal Air Force in an interactive STEM/Techno Zone and learn more about how they are creating the next generation Air Force.

The exhibition formed part of the RAF’s centenary celebrations which have been taking place across the country since April.

he West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner is urging community groups in the West Midlands to bid for a share of one million pounds which has been made available to improve the safety of the region.

David Jameson’s ‘Active Citizens Fund’ is formed of money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act and is awarded to groups who wish to invest in local community projects.

With eight months left to run until the end of the financial year there is still £1,064,144 in this year’s fund.

A

new purpose-built home means a new chapter for traders as Birmingham’s Wholesale Market opened for business in a brand new spacious, state of the arts venue.

One of the largest integrated wholesale markets in Europe, the new based; at The Hub, in Witton, provides 78 units selling fruit and veg, meat, poultry, fish and flowers, along with nine warehouses, café, as well as management offices.

ith food bank usage reportedly hitting record highs, two charitable initiatives have joined forces to grow and donate fresh fruit and vegetables to those in need.

The joint ‘Welcome Community Garden’ and ‘Breath of Life Community Garden’ venture, which sees gardening brand Miracle-Gro connect with FoodCycle projects across the country to support those at risk of food poverty and social isolation.

With the long-term aim to alleviate the nation’s food poverty crisis, the partnership hopes to kick-start a trend for green-fingered Brits to use their hobby for a wider social purpose by donating their surplus

crops.

To achieve the surplus crop, they will be armed with supplies of Miracle-Gro results-driven plant food. The All-Purpose range promises 50% extra tomatoes and 10 times the fruit weight of courgettes compared to unfed: produce which will then be put to good use to create delicious, nutritious meals for those experiencing hunger and loneliness.

Rewarding

Gardener at Welcome Community Garden, Sam Marsh, said: “Within community gardens, we grow a range of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Coupled with the pressure food banks are facing, there is clearly scope for us to support those in need.

“By using Miracle-Gro AllPurpose Liquid Plant Food, we will

be able to grow a larger quantity of edibles, which we’ll be donating.

This is incredibly rewarding and has the potential to make a real difference to our communities. I encourage others with an allotment or garden patch to do the same.”

and food poverty should not coexist; this is the perfect way to put the surplus produce achieved to good use.”

Plant Food Category Manager at Evergreen Garden Care UK Ltd. Lindsay Cooper, added: “Despite 86% of the UK population having access to their own green space, over a quarter (26%) use their outdoor space for eating, entertaining and sunbathing only.

“We are urging these people to try their hand at growing fruit and vegetables with Miracle-Gro. Combined with those who already grow, the volume of extra yield produced and made available for projects like FoodCycle could be huge.”

ttracting some 70,000 people last year, Big John’s Birmingham Mela again drew thousands to the city’s Cannon Hill Park with a wide array of event includes a mixture of sport, song and dance, food and drinks, arts and crafts and, of course, a funfair and bouncy castle for the younger visitors.

Now in its 19th year, Mela, which means ‘festival,’ and has been sponsored by Birmingham-based fast food

takeaway Big John's since 2014, had the organisers promising a "bigger and better than ever before" with something for everybody.

In previous years, the Mela – previously known as Birmingham Eid Mela had also been the fulcrum of celebrating Eid; the end of the daily fasting that takes place through the month of the Muslim Ramadan. Organisers, since, removed ‘Eid’ from the title to make the award winning event more inclusive to all.

I

n this month’s article I am going to give two recent examples of scamming that have involved my family in an effort to get readers to become more astute and aware of how devious some people are in trying to gain access to your personal information for their own financial gain.

I had a telephone call from someone reputedly from British Telecom informing me that my internet is ‘down’, his exact words, i.e. not working.

Our landline phone is with another telephone company but the line rental still belongs to British Telecom.

I was actually on the computer when I went to answer the telephone and the internet was working perfectly.

These scammers get savvier in their attempts to prey on a range of people especially the vulnerable, elderly and those who are living on their own.

I simply told the scammer that I am on the internet and hung up the phone but not before he got angry and called me stupid.

Please everyone kindly relay the important message, never to entertain any of these phoney/false nuisance calls and end them immediately.

It was not too long ago that a scammer rang an elderly friend of mine about her internet connection being slow but she does not have a computer, internet, WIFI device or any of the modern mobile phones. That is how bad it gets.

Yet another scam to alert readers happened to us the very next day.

Our daughter sent me a text to contact a named individual having received a call from him on her mobile phone that our Zanussi washer/dryer insurance was due for renewal.

It immediately sent alarm bells ringing because when insurance is due on any appliance in our home we always get a reminder letter from the company at least 30 days in advance.

Our daughter had nothing to do with the washer/

dryer’s purchase when we in the store took out the added home care agreement or what others know as insurance.

I tried to ring the number and it would not accept our blocked ex directory number.

On ringing the Birmingham John Lewis department store where my wife and I bought the item I was given the real home insurance telephone number as the point of contact who reliably informed that the insurance renewal was not due until August of next year, i.e.

2019.

The customer advisor looked up the bogus/ phoney number on their computer system and confirmed it is yet another scam doing the rounds.

It begs the question how did the original bogus caller manage to get all the relevant information in the first instance as he was well aware of the washer/dryer having been insured and the month that took place but not the year of renewal.

Our daughter was sensible enough not to give him our contact details, instead suggesting that I would call him the next day.

The tricks that these con artists adopt are truly mind blowing and we must all be aware of them.

There is no way I would ever based on a phone call pay for a renewal of anything by credit or debit cards over the phone to a complete stranger.

All credible companies send a renewal letter to a registered home address as a reminder. That is standard procedure so please be alert and tell others as forewarned is forearmed.

lumni from the past 50 years joined Professor Scott Davidson, Vice-Chancellor of Newman Univeristy on the 11th August for its Big Alumni Reunion as part of it’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Over 270 graduates enjoyed a day of memories, celebrating and reminiscing.

During his welcome speech he said: “It is fantastic to have this event in our 50th anniversary year. To go from a teacher training college in 1968 to a fully-fledged university in 2013 without too many major interruptions is quite an achievement.

“I have to pay tribute and thanks to my predecessors who worked so tirelessly for the institution in all of its previous guises.”

As part of his speech, Professor Davidson launched the Newman Alumni Volunteers Scheme, an initiative set up to give graduates the opportunity to give back to Newman and support the next generation of students.

Guests were able to go on guided tours of the campus, which due to recent investment in the University, has changed dramatically from what many of the alumni remembered from their time at Newman.

With street food, music, and partying until the early hours in the University Bar, 130 graduates even stayed overnight back in Halls of Residence for that added touch of nostalgia.

On the 9th October, there is a special celebration of Newman’s Feast Day continuing the 50th anniversary celebrations, before on the 26th and 28th October, when the University will celebrate the re-opening of the Darwin Building that has been recently renovated, and an acknowledgement of the first group of students at Newman, who first stepped foot on Campus on the 28th October 1968.

Bringing Caribbean culture to life through live cookery demonstrations, authentic street food, market stalls and live music to complete the vibe, the

ngelia Christian of Angel Foundation has just one focus, to help the children and people of Jamaica.

No stranger to working hard to bring much needed medical equipment to the island, Angelia has now turned her hand to IT tech, and a local school in Lawrence Tavern Rural St Andrew, Unity Primary School.

George Phillips of Grace Foods, one of Angel Foundation’s longstanding supporters explained “Her latest project is a really good example of the kind of work that she does.”

Following her visit to Luna in Jamaica, it was decided that Unity Primary School would be the benefector of specialist IT equipment.

The school already had a room ready and waiting for the equipment that Angel Foundation along with supporters Victoria Mutual, Grace Foods UK, and Transpakship are to bring.

Unity Primary School had refurbished the room to use as a computer lab, but the equipment that the school had was very old and didn’t last very long.

“For the students to have access to a computer lab was imperative because as we all know the age of technology is here and it would be a massive disadvantage for students not to be able to engage with this equipment,” explained acting Principal Oniel Nembard

In October 2018 the IT Suite will be handed over to the school, thanks to generous donations from a number of organisations.

Transpakship have donated 3 computers, 3 more computers from Victoria Mutual, Grace Foods UK have donated Study Tables and HP Printers with WiFi and email services, and Martin Jackson of MTJ PR has also donated a Lenovo wireless Computer.

There are 373 students at the school, and Angel is also looking to do goody bags for them, she is looking for items such as calculators, water bottles, lunch boxes, pencils, rubbers, geometry sets.

Misconceptions of options beyond GCSEs shaping career choices

A

s teenagers received their GCSE results, research reveals that parents are not fully clued up when it comes to the options available to their children.

More than a third of parents, in Birmingham, don’t know the value of an apprenticeship, signalling a wider awareness problem for youngsters when it comes to life after GCSE’s – which is impacting career choices and creating a skills gap in key industries.

Parents (in Birmingham) said that the reasons for not encouraging their child to undertake an apprenticeship

were that they were thought to be poorly paid, because they see it as a last resort for those who fail their exams and that apprenticeships are too labour-intensive.

With a lack of knowledge amongst parents it’s unsurprising that, despite being on the brink of making decisions about the direction of their career, 64% of young people in Birmingham don’t know either.

The new research which was independently commissioned by ABM UK - calls for more support to be given to parents to equip them with the right knowledge and information to pass onto their children.

Results Rise despite Examination Overhaul D espite an overhaul to make exams more demanding, GCSE pass rates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland still rose by 0.5% to 66.9%.

With new grading from 9 to 1, about 4% of entries received the top grade 9 - and 732 pupils scored a clean sweep of grade 9s in all subjects.

Girls continued to do better than boys - in terms of both the highest grades and in the pass rate. But the gender gap has narrowed this year with boys catching up.

Private equity foundation, Impetus-PEF, said thousands of young people were being let down, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Chief executive Andy Ratcliffe said thousands

of youngsters were "stuck in an endless cycle of resits."

Geoff Barton, leader of the ASCL head teachers' union, said there should be more focus on the youngsters who scored at the lower end of the scale.

Achievements

"Under the old GCSE, if you got an F or a G, whilst you may not have felt particularly pleased with it, there wasn't a national narrative saying 'you have failed to get the standard pass', yet that is now built in.

“If we had a more global outlook, our starting point would be, like all of those competitors of ours, what do we need to do so that those 11 years of teaching help every child to have something? It might not be a GCSE, but something."

School Standards Minister Nick Gibb said: "Education standards are rising in our schools and pupils have shown their abilities by achieving excellent results today."

For A-levels, for the second year running, boys have outperformed girls at the top grades with 26.6% of exam entries for boys being awarded an A or A*, compared with 26.2% of girls.

In England, A-levels have been moving away from coursework and returning to students being graded on final exams, although a mix of old-style and new exams are being taken in Wales and Northern Ireland.

nounced that with the challenges faced by new and more demanding specifications across a range of subjects; including Sciences, the Humanities and Performing Arts, the majority of subjects have increased their pass rates for both 4+ and 5+.

Headteacher, Marie George, said; “We are absolutely delighted with our exam results and they have

London school is celebrating after achieving record A-level results with more than 100 students achieving straight A or A* grades.

The school has twice (in 2015 and 2018) been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in the past five years with its stated aim being to prepare as many pupils as possible for Oxbridge and Russel Group entry and high performing students undergo a dedicated Oxbridge training programme to give them an edge.

Its “bespoke Oxbridge preparation programmes” includes training courses for all admissions tests and specialist interview preparation.

fter the government was forced to apologise for declaring some of the so-called ‘Windrush Generation’ illegal immigrants, the Home Office is now reviewing the cases of asylum seekers affected by another aspect of its so-called ‘hostile environment’ policy, who may have been inappropriately banned from studying.

Asylum seekers who are awaiting a Home Office decision cannot work, must often reside as a fixed address, and report regularly to a Home Office outpost. In addition, it appears that new guidance introduced since January 2018 is also preventing young asylum seekers from studying.

The change was introduced as part of the Immigration Act 2016 and it affects migrants lawfully in the UK but without leave to remain, like asylum seekers.

The government said it was only intended to be used on a case-bycase basis when proportionate - for example, when they want to know the whereabouts of an asylum seeker, they could specify

legislation, the government gave assurances that it did not intend to impose a blanket ban on asylum seekers accessing education.

Home Office minister Baroness Williams clarified in the House of Lords that the new immigration provisions were not designed to prevent asylum seekers from studying; "The Home Office is proactively looking to identify cases where this has been applied inappropriately and will apply a new bail notice to the individual," she said.

The consequences for asylum seekers caught breaching new conditions can be severe. They are liable to prosecution and could be subject to a fine and/or six months in prison.

Overcoming Adversity To Help Others

fter coming to the UK from Kenya aged just 17 in 1968, Dr Saroj Duggal was faced with many difficult decisions, not least looking after her younger brothers, sometimes going without food herself to ensure they were fed.

Not content with being told to work in factories and foundries, this educated young lady knew she wanted to better herself and sought out an office job.

“If I had started my journey where they wanted me to,” I wasn’t going to end up where I wanted to be,” explained Dr Duggal.

Finding a job with Mr Duggal, as a secretary for Unity Finance, it wasn’t long before she was turning over big profits for the company, and a working relationship soon blossomed into a romantic one.

“In Hinduism there is nearly always an arranged marriage as well as other cultures, but I knew I wanted to settle down with Mr Duggal,” she reminisced.

Unfortunately, she was met with an ultimatum by her parents; marry the man of their choosing, or leave the house.

“I knew I would be able to make good of our life, so I left in 1970 to be with him. I was disowned by my parents, my culture and my relatives, no one would talk to me or have anything to do with me.”

Dr Duggal was resigned to keep moving forward and show that she made the right choice.

Having completed law and insurance courses, the business was renamed as Crownsway Insurance Brokers Limited, and she set to work passing on her knowledge to those who did not know about insurance, or why they needed it.

As one of the first brokers of taxi insurance in the 70’s and 80’s, Dr Duggal pioneered daily and weekly premiums to give

people the chance to work for themselves.

Throughout the years, problems with in-laws arose, especially over children. “I came from Gujarati family and my husband is a Punjabi, although we’re both Hindus our mother tongue is different.

“Only a son can continue his father’s name, and through four pregnancies we were blessed with daughters, although to others, these lives were not blessings, and a son was all that was wanted.”

As in-laws tried to turn her husband against her, and through his own illnesses, with young children in tow, Dr Duggal nursed her husband back to health, while juggling her children and the business simultaneously.

“I had to live my life as a challenge, not only for myself but for other youngsters who get married, especially girls, who then take their own life because the person their parents have chosen is so terribly wrong for them.

“When I was expecting my youngest daughter, other ladies who were pregnant wouldn’t look at me, or talk to me in fear that by doing so, they would have a girl, and that killed me inside.”

It was a few years later when one of her relatives was going through what she had gone through, that she realised what she needed to do. “She came to me saying she wished she had my courage to tell her parents how she felt.

“She was a very clever, educated girl, and the person her parents wanted her to be with came from a very uneducated family, almost illiterate. I went to her parents and was a mediator, explaining to them how by forcing her into this marriage they would be ruining her life for the sake of pride.”

It took a lot of perseverance, but the child’s parents agreed with Dr Duggal, which led the way for

other young women to ask for her help in similar matters.

“Shining a light on this is very important to me, to ensure that these young women are given a voice.”

“My parents and family have come back and told me that they are now very proud of me to what my daughters and I have achieved, but it’s too little too late.

“Everything I’ve done has been without them, and I am determined to continue to prove them and the narrow minded culture wrong by bridging the cultural barriers and empowering people through education.”

Most of the Thursday afternoon, Dr Duggal visits the young and elderly at local Temples, Gurdwaras and homes, where she feeds, nurses, dresses and cares for the members of her community that are totally neglected and have no one else to turn to. “It was in my destiny and I was chosen to do good things

by God, and I will continue to do them until I can’t do it anymore.”

Helping people of all generations and cultures, Dr Duggal is not one to blow her own horn, but her love and generosity is felt across communities.

“I am just so happy that I can make a difference in these girls’ lives, to be a voice of reason to their parents, so that they don’t have to go through what I had to go through and completely stop this vicious cycle of suffering.

My award with The Phoenix brought me even further out in public and into the community.

“I am extremely proud of and privileged to have four daughters and they are undoubtedly my pillar of strength with their unwavering support and without them I wouldn’t have achieved success in my life.”

They are a distimctly different 6 piece tightband made up of Muzaza ), Trustworth Samende , Abundance Mutori Donald Moyo Ndaba Coster Moyo and Miti Mugande giving you raw Guitar, bass Keyboards and Purcussion sounds.

Since 2008 when they hit the world by storm it has been

constant work ever since, they have brought traditional African music to the masses and gained massive respect with fans in North America and the whole of Europe I was privalaged to catch an interview with the lead singer Muzuza from the 6 peice and when i say lucky I mean I really was because it is hard to get this band away from recording in the studio.

I was very aware that Muzuza loves to sing constantly and is a machine for writing but speaking to him myself I can confirm that he is truly music driven and constantly creating music is a way of life for Makoomba.

Very often I ask artists what they do away from the music and if they say I only do music away from music i know that they are very serious.

'We have been a close band for a very long time,' Says Muzaza with

a smile in his voice 'we wright together, and inspire each other with the music, the creativity really comes together in the studio.'

Makoomba the name is inspired

Bass 2018 B Launches Reggae 50

irmingham’s leading arts development agency, Punch, have announced the theme for this year’s BASS2018.

REGGAE 50 will celebrate the Golden anniversary of the genre, with a focus on the impact it has had on music, popular culture and the world at large. It takes place throughout October.

The spotlight includes contributions from some of Reggae’s biggest names, from Jamaica and the UK. Punch CEO Ammo Talwar MBE said “As the festival approaches it’s twelfth presentation we are proud to herald the incredible achievements that Reggae has accomplished.

“As a music form it fights above it’s weight, and as a cultural entity

you cannot imagine a world without it.

“BASS2018 allows us to give due acclaim to those in the Reggae world who have made it the potent force that it is.”

At a launch on the 7th August, specially invited guests gathered at the O2 Institue in Digbeth, Birmingham to hear from Punch CEO Ammo about the direction of this years BASS 2018.

However, and this is a very, very big however – once the story and characters were established, the performance took on a life of its own, with the audience suddenly being seduced by the show and, before long, the crowd were roaring and cheering and applauding until their throats were hoarse and their palms were sore.

It was a beautiful thing to witness a packed auditorium “click” at the exact same time. Audience participation is a vital thing when it comes to theatre and, as silly as this may sound, I truly believe that the

typical reserved nature of Britons was a major factor in the opening fifteen minutes.

We are a famously withdrawn nation of people with our trademark stiff upper lip and phobia of embarrassing ourselves, so nobody wants to be the first person to burst out laughing in a busy theatre; but once one person does it, the ice is broken and engaging in a performance suddenly doesn’t seem daunting anymore – and that was precisely my experience in the opening of Matilda: The Musical.

From the moment the first big laugh echoed through the theatre, the entire audience were caught up in the whirlwind of emotion the show throws at you; and that is part of the brilliance of Matilda: The Musical.

In one moment, you’ll be in fits of laughter and the next; you have to pause for a moment because there’s a lump in your throat and have to try your best not to cry in front of everyone.

Unless that kind of thing doesn’t embarrass you, in which case you

can just let it all out! It is far more cathartic that way.

A

Talent

The cast, comprised predominantly of young children, are truly stunning and transcend their youthfulness by delivering strong, controlled performances, keeping you entranced and never missing a beat.

Their professionalism is deeply impressive and the fact that such a huge production rests entirely on their tiny shoulders speaks volumes of the talent these kids have.

Of course, this is very much Matilda’s show and I just have to give a special mention to young Nicola Turner, who was our Matilda for the night, for giving a truly breath-taking performance.

She imbued Matilda with the necessary strength and defiance that has become synonymous with the character, while also lending a heart wrenching vulnerability to her because, let’s not forget that if you strip away all of the fun and bright

wesome, Justin Timberlake absolutely smashed it on his Man of the woods concert in Birmingham.

It is something that we are all talking about constantly as it was so unfogettable.

ith our very own, world-class theatre right on our doorstep, Birmingham welcomes the wonderful and quirky musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s tale to the Birmingham Hippodrome.

As a child, I was a huge fan of both Roald Dahl’s original story as well as Danny DeVito’s 1996 film adaptation and I honestly didn’t know what to expect from Matilda: The Musical.

“Surely there isn’t a better, funnier and more exciting way of telling this story”, I thought. Boy, how wrong I was. Matilda: The Musical is remarkable in every sense of the word – from the set design to the performances and the choreography to the music – it is wall-to-wall brilliance.

During the opening ten to fifteen minutes, I was a little weary. I was enjoying myself, but the audience didn’t seem overly engaged in what they were seeing, with some of the early comedy enticing only a handful of unenthused chuckles, and there were a few moments where I felt that the show itself was wading a little too close to pantomime territory, complete with crazy costumes and deliberately over the top performances.

colours, Matilda is the story of a neglected child trying to find her place in the world and Turner never loses sight of that.

Carly Thoms is also wonderful as Matilda’s teacher Miss Honey; a character who endured an upbringing much like that of Matilda’s and the dynamic between these tormented souls is fantastic.

Then there’s the character we all love to hate, the evil Miss Trunchbull, brilliantly portrayed

by Craige Els, who reprises the role after playing the character in the West End production for three years between 2014 and 2017.

Any time he steps on stage, infused with prosthetic make-up and a bodysuit that makes him look like a hulking hunchback, you can’t help but be mesmerised

by Els and his uncanny ability to portray an overwhelmingly irredeemable character in such a way that, while you still hate Trunchbull and the horrid things she does, you can’t help but love every second she’s on stage.

Matilda: The Musical is very much an adaptation of the original novel by Roald Dahl as opposed to a reworking of the film adaptation, meaning none of the actors feel obliged to imitate their cinematic counterparts and have the freedom to bring something completely new and unique to their respective roles.

Of course, as a musical, there’s a plethora of musical numbers throughout the production – some are small and intimate and some are big, fun and erratic with intricate choreography and, while I’m certain you’ll leave the theatre with a particular favourite, it has to be said that all of the music in Matilda: The Musical is exquisitely written by Australian comedian and musician, Tim Minchin.

If you are familiar with Minchin’s work, you can tell from a mile away that his own, very distinct stamp is all over this musical.

Wicked

He has a stunning ability to write music that is both wickedly smart

and funny, while infusing it with so much genuine emotion that in between the belly-laughs, your vision will grow hazy from the tears invading your eyeballs.

It’s trademark Tim Minchin. One song in-particular remains seared into my mind and it comes in the shape of a solo performance by Matilda.

The song is called “Quiet” and comes when Matilda first realises there is something very different and very powerful about her and that she can’t control what’s going on in her head.

It’s a painfully beautiful ballad that will speak to everyone who has ever struggled with feeling different or alone, or the belief that they don’t belong.

It is a deep and powerful song that perfectly marks a pivotal moment in the show. I truly hope Minchin works on more musicals in the future, because his unique talents and skillset are perfectly geared towards the stage.

Matilda: The Musical is a dazzling experience that genuinely has something for everyone and feels like a very significant and very immersive communal experience.

If you give yourself entirely to the performance and allow yourself to be swept up in the magic, you’re in for an unforgettable experience.

Matilda: The Musical is at the Birmingham Hippodrome from August 15th to September 8th – do not miss it!

he last thing we expected was an invite to play Ping Pong as I am so terrible at Sports but this actually grabbed my interest as it was a first time ever Ping Pong/bar.

With class DJS in the background playing the latest tunes while you play ping pong with your mates, this is a very different but exciting type of social experience which I must say I thouroughly enjoyed.

The Serve VIP launch had free alcohol on offer so really there was no way that I would be able to play after having a few but I was quite happy enjoying watching everyone else play.

The venue is a decent size, and actually has a true nightclub feel and its definately something that wil not only attact students but businesspeople who want a quirky night out.

I want to thank Serve for welcoming me at the door with their two glamorous hot ladies dressed in carnival like wear and I was squashed in nicely inbetween the two for an Instagram photo.

This really got the night kicking off well. Sexy VIP ladies serving horderves, alcohol and smash with bad ass DJs playing the tunes.

I had so much fun I did a facebook live and everyone wanted to know where I was but sorry this was a VIP only invite!

We recommend this place on a night out if you want something a bit different from the norm. The Ping Pong starts off early doors then transforms into a nightlife bar only in the late hours.

The staff are friendly and the vibe is very American, and of course it would be as Serve is an american brand. We spoke to the Managing Partner, David Smith who was really excited to bring this first time ever concept to our city.

Have to big him up for such a memorable evening.

Already I am planning a Street Cred Ping Pong night out but I wont be playing as I will embarass myself if I’ve had alcohol!

Definitely recommend this place and I feel I will be attending Serve very reguarly.

In an exciting fusion of art and science, Motionhouse has worked with partners from the University of Oxford on the role of electricity in the human body to inspire the show.

YARDIE Y ARDIE centres on the life of D — a young Jamaican man who has never fully recovered from witnessing the murder of his older brother when he was a child.

Growing up under the wing of a Kingston gangster named King Fox, D is dispatched to London in order to help expand King Fox’s empire, but when he arrives in England, he quickly realises that things aren’t as they seem and when his past comes back to haunt him in unexpected ways, D is thrust in to a violent quest that brings him into conflict with a vicious London gangster named Rico.

Based on the novel of the same name by Victor Headley, this gritty adaptation is the directorial debut from Hollywood A-lister and bona fide megastar, Idris Elba.

I was lucky enough to see an advanced preview of YARDIE on Thursday 23rd August, over a week before its official release courtesy of MASSIVE; a brand new initiative that plans to host advanced screenings of the most anticipated British films, complete with exclusive interviews and a live Q&A, in collaboration with BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1Xtra.

YARDIE has been somewhat a labour of love for Idris Elba and has taken many years to get off the ground. “My journey with the film has taken maybe four years.”

He says. “This is a very culturally specific film and the climate has had to change and the structure of filmmaking and budgeting has had to change, all while the narrative has matured.”

So, it is safe to say that it has been a long road for Elba and company to bring YARDIE to the big screen and in the hands of a lesser talent; it could have been a

much different movie.

It could have been a generic and needlessly violent British gangster movie littered with twodimensional characters, but by establishing a strong emotional core early on and spending time developing his main players; Elba finds a way of grounding and humanising the story.

“I really wanted to make Goodfellas. I really wanted to make The Godfather, but at the same time, I think we’ve all seen that film and we’ve all seen that representation of a black man onscreen” Elba explains.

“I made a film that touches on the violence but doesn’t embellish it or celebrate it in a way that makes it grotesque to watch and actually leaves the audience thinking about

the decisions that D has to make.”

So, while there are still flashes of violence throughout, as one would expect from this kind of movie, Elba never loses focus of the humans at the heart of the story and, in his hands, the violence isn’t just an unavoidable symptom of the genre but an effective tool he uses sporadically throughout for maximum emotional impact and this was a really important

approach for Elba; “We’re now sitting in a climate in England where we’re seeing a massive rise in knife-crime, so weirdly enough, the movie resonates in a few ways” Elba says.

“Hopefully, the younger audience will watch this movie and realise that they do have more than one choice.”

Elba, along with his cinematographer John Conroy and his art directors Alison Adams and Donna Noble, exquisitely recreate a very specific and very distinct time period and have managed to drop us right in the middle of 1970s Kingston and 1980s London to wonderful effect.

Kingston is awash with colour and drenched in sunlight, radiating heat right from the screen, whereas London is dreary and sodden, with the music and the lights from nightclubs breathing life in to the seemingly lifeless surroundings.

The use of colour in this film is also wonderful, and at some points, Elba even uses subtle colour as a signifier, a precursor or a representation of a deeper element not overtly present in the images on screen and that is just one of the many intricacies in his direction that show how comfortable and natural he is behind the camera.

The performances on display in YARDIE are electric and as an actor himself, Elba understands the way actors work and how to entice the best possible performance from them.

Aml Ameen is captivating as D, delivering a multi-faceted performance that sizzles with a quiet rage.

Shantol Jackson, in her first feature film, is hypnotic as Yvonne — D’s childhood sweetheart.

She is a fiercely strong and independent character and I think it is important for women everywhere to see a character like

order to keep you informed of everything the big and small screen has to offer every month – and who knows?

Perhaps there will even be a competition or two every now and then that will give you the opportunity to win some amazing prizes.

her on screen.

Unlike most, if not all of the male characters, Yvonne has morals and boundaries she will not betray and emerges as one of the only genuinely good people in the movie.

Then, there’s the always brilliant Stephen Graham as Rico, the patois-speaking cockney club owner who causes a lot of trouble for D. Graham jumps head first in to the role and while he isn’t in it quite as much as the promotional material would have you believe, you still feel his presence and he manages to be both sinister and hysterically funny in equal measure.

Now, the main issue with YARDIE is the same issue that plagues other films of the same ilk, such as Scorsese’s GOODFELLAS or De Palma’s SCARFACE — it is a story about bad people doing bad things, and while the audience may be invested in the story, it is difficult for them to connect with and root for the characters on a personal level.

Take Tony Montana in SCARFACE, for example; the audience become invested in his violent and chaotic rise from Cuban immigrant to millionaire drug-lord, but are any of us going to sit here and pretend that we he was a nice guy and that he didn’t get what he deserved in the end?

Even D, a man portrayed as being somewhat of a lost soul who clearly has some good in his heart, is hardly what you’d call a “good man” and you can’t ignore the fact that he has chosen this life for himself and seems to escalate things whenever he has the chance.

Luckily, YARDIE has Aml Ameen at its core; a truly remarkable young actor who manages to keep everything grounded.

So, while D himself may not be the most likeable individual, Ameen brings a vulnerability to the role that prevents him from being completely irredeemable.

D is a man driven by hate, but it’s a hate that was birthed from the overwhelming love he had for his brother and the tragedy of losing him, and it is this aspect of the character that Ameen latches on to.

D isn’t doing what he’s doing because he enjoys it, but because he has been lost, angry and confused since the day his brother was killed and is yet to find closure on that part of his life.

YARDIE is a confident and assured directorial debut from Idris Elba and will leave you hoping he spends more time behind the camera in the future.

While flawed, it is the work of a man who was clearly born to be an artist and it is easy to envision Elba directing something truly remarkable in the future.

As it stands, YARDIE is a strong and intermittently powerful British film and while it doesn’t quite pack the punch you may be hoping for, it is still effective enough to linger with you for a while after.

However, as Elba himself said, YARDIE is a very culturally specific film and it is easy to imagine it being far more impactful to people who are a part of said culture.

They Shall Not Grow Old A New Documentary from Peter Jackson Brings the Great War to the Big Screen

n the centenary of the First World War, Oscarwinning director Peter Jackson, best known for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, employs state-of-theart technology to transform archive footage more than a hundred years old in order to resurrect the people who can best tell the story: the men who were actually there.

Each frame of the film has been meticulously hand-colourised by Jackson’s team and converted in to digital-3D; transformed with modern post-production techniques that breathe new life into these war heroes, enabling them to live among us once more giving them the opportunity to tell us about their attitudes to the conflict; how they ate, how they slept, the close friendships they formed in those moments between battles and their hopes and dreams for the future.

The title They Shall Not Grow Old is a direct quote taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen, which was specifically written in honour of the casualties of the British Expeditionary Force during the

First World War; so not only is the film itself an eye-opening and meticulously researched journey in to the war, but even the title is of great importance, comprised of five small words that carry the weight of every fallen British soldier. It’s a small, but poignant detail.

Premiere

They Shall Not Grow Old will premiere at the 62nd Annual BFI London Film Festival on October 16th at BFI Southbank.

In a special broadcast, the film will also be simultaneously screened to various cinemas and special venues across the UK. Attended by director Peter Jackson, the simulcast will include a special post-screening Q&A with Jackson, hosted by film critic Mark Kermode.

working-class family man, Christopher Robin, encounters his childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh, who helps him to rediscover the joys of life.

No matter how old you are and no matter what generation you are from, chances are, you are probably familiar with Winniethe-Pooh – the anthropomorphic teddy bear who’s obsessed with honey and lives in Hundred-Acre Wood.

First appearing in A. A. Milne’s 1924 book of poetry, When We Were Very Young, Winnie-thePooh has gone on to become a staple character in literature, appearing in various forms in almost every decade since.

Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga and Roo were all based on stuffed toys owned by Milne’s son, Christopher Robin Milne, who himself was the inspiration for the character of, well…

Christopher Robin.

The longevity these characters have experienced is remarkable, with stories that transcend time and continue to touch the hearts of children everywhere.

Bittersweet

With Christopher Robin, Disney explores a question none of us ever thought to ask – what happens when Christopher Robin grows up?

It is a simple yet fantastic angle to approach this original story from and one that immediately tugs at your heartstrings, as the opening scene is Winnie-the-pooh and friends hosting a farewell party for Christopher Robin as he prepares to leave for boarding school.

None of them know when, or if, they are going to see each other again and it results in a very bittersweet opening that introduces us to all of the characters at an emotionally pivotal moment in their lives.

What follows is an opening title sequence, told in various

chapters, that chronicles Christopher Robin’s journey from childhood to adulthood; the ups, the downs, the good, the bad – to give us an insight into the man Christopher Robin is today.

Christopher (Ewan McGregor) is now a full-grown adult, working as an efficiency expert at a large luggage company in London, managed by the demanding, yet painfully lazy and unsupportive Giles Winslow Jr (Mark Gattis).

He is also married to an architect named Evelyn (Hayley

Atwell) and has a daughter named Madeline (Bronte Carmichael), whom he plans to send to the same boarding school he attended as a child.

With all of his time consumed by his work, Christopher Robin is no longer the joyful individual he once was.

Older

He goes to work at a job he doesn’t like in order to provide for a wife and child he never sees.

Even when he isn’t working, he’s thinking about working and completely, yet unintentionally neglecting his wife and daughter.

Now, I don’t mean to sound insensitive but if you can’t find time for Hayley Atwell then something has gone very, very wrong in your life!

Koenigswieser paint a very bleak picture for us, of a life completely devoid of joy and colour and it is represented in the images we see onscreen, with dull and washed out browns and greys dominating every frame and cloudy skies preventing sunshine from penetrating the overwhelming cheerlessness of each day.

The monotony of Robin’s life is suffocating and when he announces to his wife and daughter that he can no longer go on holiday with them because he has to work, the very foundation of his marriage is thrown into turmoil.

Forster does a fantastic job of establishing the unhappiness that encapsulates Robin and his family; in fact, he may even overdo it a little, as audiences will be left exhausted a n d

begging for some kind of relief and just when you’re left thinking “damn, I thought this was meant to be a cute Disney movie” in walks Winnie-the-Pooh!

Comforting

Jim Cummings, who has been the voice of Winnie-thePooh since 1988, is back again and does a truly wonderful job of bestowing Pooh with his trademark charming naivety.

Pooh’s voice is soft and husky, much like his body, and every word that comes out of his mouth, no matter how nonsensical and dim-witted, just feels comforting.

The film may be called Christopher Robin, but this is very much Winnie-the-Pooh’s movie and he steals each and every frame he’s in.

You’ll find yourself smiling uncontrollably every time he waddles on screen and delivers

a piece of dialogue that simultaneously makes perfect sense, but no sense at all.

The wickedly talented Jim Cummings also voices everyone’s favourite bouncing tiger, Tigger and it is quite astounding that he can give us a character as mellow and carefree as Pooh and a character as exuberant and energetic as Tigger with equal success in the same film.

The rest of the voice cast, comprised of Brad Garrett as Eeyore, Nick Mohammed as Piglet, Peter Capaldi as Rabbit, Sophie Okonedo as Kanga, Sara Sheen as Roo and Toby Jones as Owl are all delightful and bring a loveable familiarity to their roles.

Ewan McGregor is wonderfully charming and animated as Christopher Robin and clearly isn’t afraid to make himself look a little silly for his art, delivering a performance with a brilliantly infectious energy, acting alongside a group of exquisitely computer-generated stuffed toys with the same dedication he lends to the scenes when he’s acting alongside real people.

With Pooh and friends back in his life, Director Marc Forster and cinematographer Matthias Koenigswieser slowly begin to strip away the banality of Robin’s life, with the sun piercing the clouds and providing the film with a warmth and colour that replicates the story being told.

It’s a wonderful, methodical and well executed creative choice and the cinematography on display is arguably some of the best of the year.

Hot on the heels of Paddington and Paddington 2, now was the perfect time to give audiences a new Pooh adventure and while Christopher Robin may not be quite as distinctly quirky as Paddington, it still hits many of the same notes and shares its enormous heart, delivering a warm, funny and adorable family-friendly adventure that’s sweeter than a pot of honey.

he mysterious and elusive Robert McCall spends his days delivering violent, vigilante justice for people with nowhere else to turn.

However, when his best friend and former colleague is brutally murdered, McCall’s past comes back to haunt him and now, on a quest for revenge, McCall must take on a crew of highly trained assassins who’ll stop at nothing to destroy him.

In the first sequel of his fortyyear career, Denzel Washington returns as Robert McCall; a quiet, unassuming man who is actually a highly-trained former government agent who spends his retirement seeking out people in need and absolutely brutalising those who have wronged them.

While that description of the character makes him seem like an evil, borderline psychotic murderer, Denzel Washington does what Denzel Washington does best, by bringing a very real, very human gravitas to the character.

You may not agree with his methods, but it’s easy to understand why McCall does what he does and, let’s face it – it is very easy to root for a character who has made it his own personal mission to rid the world of evil and, while you could argue that his methods make him just as bad as the bad guys, this is a moral dilemma

The Equalizer 2 that is directly addressed in The Equalizer 2; with McCall being asked if he thinks he deserves to die for the things he has done, to which he replies “a hundred times over.”

McCall is under no illusion that what he’s doing is somehow right or just, but in a world where everybody else chooses to turn a blind-eye to the horrible things happening around them, McCall chooses to address those horrible things with an equally horrible

violence; fighting fire with fire, as they say.

Antoine Fuqua returns to the director’s chair for The Equalizer 2, directing Denzel Washington in their fourth movie together, after Training Day, The Equalizer and The Magnificent Seven.

These two talented gentlemen clearly enjoy working together and that shines through in The Equalizer 2.

Everything moves with a certain effortlessness and nothing feels

forced or laboured, with each man bringing out the very best in the other.

The action sequences feel more refined here than they did in the original, with Fuqua directing them with a rapid fluidity, resulting in fast, intricately choreographed fight scenes where we can clearly see every blow that’s thrown.

A lot of American filmmakers have a terrible habit of directing action in tight close-ups or midshots instead of putting space between the camera and the actors and giving the choreography room to breathe, and this makes it difficult for us to see exactly what’s happening.

Thankfully, this is not an issue that applies to The Equalizer 2.

Fuqua gives the actors space to move and this directing style plays directly in to Robert McCall’s unbelievable spatial awareness, as we see him use the environment to his advantage and assess each situation, picking off his enemies with various items spread throughout the vicinity.

McCall knows exactly what he’s going to do and where he’s

going to move long before any situation explodes into violence and Fuqua does a fantastic job of establishing this.

Unfortunately, The Equalizer 2 suffers from a few pacing issues with Fuqua juggling the various different plot-threads set up in the screenplay.

On top of the main story, there are a handful of side stories that don’t really serve to propel the primary plot in any real way and while they do serve as some nice character development, they also distract from the real story.

Having said that, the character development in The Equalizer 2 is pretty great for the most part, as we grow to learn more about Robert McCall and what makes him tick.

He’s not just a badass vigilante; he’s a real person who has experienced traumas that have led him to become the man he is today.

One of the main things that I believe gives The Equalizer 2 the edge over the original is a greatly improved climax.

I loved everything about the 2014 original, and the climax was suitably bloody and cathartic,

but the villain was built-up to be McCall’s equal in almost every way, leaving me anticipating an epic one-on-one showdown between the two, but it never came.

With The Equalizer 2, Fuqua and company really deliver a finale worthy of the build-up.

Throughout the film, we hear various news reports of a storm approaching – a very obvious metaphor for the violent storm that Robert McCall is eventually going to unleash upon his enemies.

Anyway, when the storm finally arrives, we are gifted with our climactic playground – an abandoned beachside town that has been evacuated because of the storm.

It is an excellent setting for the finale, with the vicious storm sending waves crashing over the buildings and the heavy wind and rain reducing visibility.

It is an intense, violent finale that almost feels like like an old-school slasher movie in its structure; only the villains are the helpless babysitters and Robert McCall is Michael Myers.

With a heavy emphasis on stealth, McCall is depicted as the unstoppable, often unseen killing machine who’s always two steps ahead of his victims.

The Equalizer 2 delivers everything you enjoyed about the original while simultaneously hitting us with a deeper storyline and some strong, emotional character development that really opens our hearts to Robert McCall and now that Washington has lost his sequel virginity, I could honestly see The Equalizer becoming its own, fully-fledged action franchise.

Will we get to see The Equalizer 3? I certainly hope so. How about The Equalizer 4, 5 and 6? Probably not, but all I know is that I will never get tired of seeing Denzel Washington beat up bad guys, so I will be there for each and every sequel that may or may not be coming our way in the future.

At the very least, I hope they give us The Equalizer 3 to round off the trilogy.

HIDDENGems Take Shelter Director: Jeff Nichols Release Date: 2011

Take shelter is a small, independent drama that addresses mental health in the shape of a man obsessed with keeping his family safe, who

isn’t sure if he can even trust his own thoughts. It is a powerful story, the likes of which are rarely seen committed to film, held together by some truly remarkable performances that will linger with you long after the credits roll. Michael Shannon, one of the greatest and most versatile actors of his generation, leads the way in this emotionally charged drama and delivers what is arguably a career-best performance.

For the collectors amongst you, a brand new, limited edition Blu-ray is set to be released on September 3rd 2018.

Motorpoint Staff Raise £640 For Charity Motorpoint staff have raised £640 for Lancashire Mind pounding the streets of Burnley.

Staff from the East Lancashirebased branch of the UK’s largest independent car retailer, which has a long-established 10-acre branch on Rosegrove Lane in the town, swapped their suits for running shoes in aid of their charitable partner when they joined 2,000 other runners taking part in the recent Burnley 10K.

Based in Chorley, Mind Lancashire are a mental health charity who work in partnership with others to provide training and support, and campaign locally to make residents mental wellbeing a priority.

Motorpoint partnered with Lancashire Mind earlier this year after a long-standing relationship with Pendleside Hospice.

“I would like to say a big thank you to all of my colleagues who took part in the Burnley 10K,” explained Cliff Graham, General Manager of Motorpoint in Burnley.”

Aston Martin Recreates Iconic James Bond ‘Goldfinger’ DB5

T

he iconic Aston Martin DB5 is back, thanks to a unique collaboration between Aston Martin and EON Productions, the company that produces the James Bond films.

Following the successful DB4 G.T. continuation project, a series of 25 Goldfinger DB5 continuation editions*, will be created for customers by Aston Martin Works and EON Productions.

The Goldfinger DB5 continuation will be based on James Bond’s legendary car from 1964 and built by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell – the original home of the DB5.

They will be authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen on screen, with some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and

reliability.

This authenticity will extend to include functioning gadgets such as revolving number plates and more, which were made famous in Goldfinger.

The gadgets will be codeveloped with Oscar®-winner Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor from the James Bond films.

Officially sanctioned by Aston Martin and EON Productions, all the Goldfinger edition cars will be produced to one specification - Silver Birch paint - just like the original.

The most instantly recognisable car of all-time, the DB5 made its first appearance in the third James Bond movie, Goldfinger, alongside Sean Connery as James Bond.

Laden with gadgets and

armaments installed by Q Branch, the secret agent’s Aston Martin became an instant hit with moviegoers.

The initiative involves 21 sculptures donated and decorated by leading figures from the worlds of art and design installed at prominent locations across the capital.

The design of the Land Rover

rhino uses specialist paint techniques from Land Rover’s state-of-the-art manufacturing process to achieve a highly durable liquid metal finish.

Traditionally chrome has been used on vehicles to communicate prestige. Land Rover has developed an innovative and sustainable process to create a modern interpretation of chrome using a paint coating called spray chrome.

Inspired by the dye treatments conservationists use to protect rhinos from ivory traders, the horn of the Land Rover sculpture has been painted red, highlighting the plight of this endangered creature.

The London-based art installation was towed into place using a Land Rover Discovery SUV and is designed to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino, culminating in the celebration of World Rhino Day on 22 September. Each of the 21 rhinos will then be sold to raise funds for Tusk projects across Africa at an event hosted by leading auction house Christie’s on 9 October.

This month we have Sophia Sutcliffe, a young and upcoming model from Birmingham, and

a gifted dramatherapist named Zara BaileyMaxwell. Whose work has inspired many, for those of you who are interested in the modelling industry or creative arts please keep reading on!

Model Behaviour

H

i, my name’s Sophia Sutcliffe and I’m from Handsworth, Birmingham. I tried to get involved with modelling when I was in college so I was around the ages of 16, 17.

However, because I was trying

to go through agencies straight away it was very expensive and hard for me. I also had to travel to London for photoshoots just to be told I’ll have to pay for a portfolio which cost a lot.

Due to my past experience I left modelling for a couple years until I was 20. A friend of mine knew I was interested so she pointed me in the right direction and now I’m thriving with all the support I have around me and trying to build myself up.

The best advice for the creative industry, in my opinion would be to: be yourself, never give up and don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone!

I would say that my inspiration for modelling comes from Winnie Harlow, the Canadian Fashion Model. As she broke boundaries for what is seen as a “Perfect model” because of her skin condition, also known as vitiligo. Which has now been one of the main reasons she is

known, this is both modelling and being a vitiligo public speaker.

i, my name is Zara Bailey-Maxwell, I am a dramatherapist by profession, author, drama specialist and lover of life.

I currently work as an emotional and wellbeing therapist for children under 18 and presently run my own fruitful business entitled KYBY Drama (Know You Be You) and SLT (Speak Life Therapies), which have been running successfully for two years.

This independent business consists of two areas; Firstly, KYBY Drama that involves running tailored workshops and programmes for children and young people (CYP) focusing on confidence and self-esteem.

It is all about learning and self-development through creating a fun and encouraging atmosphere, where CYP feel free and comfortable to ‘be’ and ‘love’ themselves.

The second part is entitled SLT, this consists of dramatherapy, one to one or group sessions, mentoring and counseling.

SLT provide spaces to explore self in a confidential and safe manner. I believe everyone has a voice that should be heard, valued and inevitably speak life.

What inspired you to start this company and what is the main aim of your company?

I am an advocate of self belief, self-worth and confidence, these being some of the key areas to success. “Only when you know who you are, can you begin the journey of confidence”.

My aim is to allow anyone who uses my services to be free by providing safe spaces to express themselves in a creative way, allowing them to learn about themselves and the world that they live in.

If more of us learn to accept ourselves for who we are and begin to be confident by loving ourselves, I feel our attitude towards life and each other would be so much different.

My tag line is “Know You. Be You. Love You. Shine You” Which I feel simply explains in a sentence my ethos.

I love that! Self - belief is so important. What is the age range for your company?

The service I offer is to individuals, groups and organizations, providing 1.1 sessions, workshops and bespoke programmes tailored to meet individual needs. It is not a company you can join, but one which provides a service to all ages.

I do at times provide one off programmes and projects that people can get involved in. One such project is “Project I AM” an international mission project.

I have partnered with Esther Grace Foundations (a charity) ran by Amelia Williams along with another colleague Chantelle Atkinson to provide children in schools and orphanages internationally with much needed resources such as books, bags, stationary, clothes toiletries and other basic essentials.

Alongside the resources we will be going voluntarily to three islands Jamaica, Barbados and St Lucia to deliver workshops in the schools around confidence building, self-esteem and knowing and loving oneself.

A Neil Simon The celebrated US playwright gained international fame in the 1960s for stage and screen comedies including the Tony Award-winning ‘The Odd Couple’ and ‘Barefoot In The Park’ and, in 1991, he won the Pulitzer Prize For Drama with ‘Lost in Yonkers.’

A prolific author, the Ney York native averaging at least one play a year for much of his career, with work included the hit musicals ‘Sweet Charity’ and ‘They're Playing Our Song’ with some of the greatest American actors of the time starring in films of his plays.

Suffering from complications from pneumonia, he died age 91.

n artist of immense versatility, her powerful gospeltrained voice, which embrace jazz, soul and rhythm and blues, saw her racked up 20 Top 10 albums, a dozen millionselling singles and earned no fewer than 18 Grammy awards during a 50-year recording career.

Barry Chuckle O

ne half of the Chuckle Brothers comedy duo, the entertainer - real name was Barry Elliott - starred in ChuckleVision with his brother Paul on the BBC between 1987 and 2009.

With brother Paul, the duo from Rotherham - who performed for friends and family in their backyard before becoming famous - started their careers as The Chuckles on ITV talent show ‘Opportunity Knocks’ in 1967.

Many viewers who grew up watching ChuckleVision and he leaves 50 years of laughter as his legacy.

He was 73 when he died after a short period of ill health.

ith his bulging-eyes routine, the Barbadosborn ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ contestant wowed viewers (both the thousands in the audience and the millions watching on TV) by popping out his eye-balls in tune to music – which got him to the semi-final stage in 2011.

The Essex resident died after he had a stroke and now family and friends have set-up fundraising activities to raise the £5,000 needed to have him buried in his homeland.

He was 54.

Sted remembered in day of Celebration S

harp shards of tears interspersed with the intermittent showers of rain as, 366 days after the late Sted Wallen was found slumped in his home, a mass gathering, for the annual Birmingham Sports & Cultural Day, paid homage to its founder and organizer – all with heavy hearts.

As brother, Terence, took up the mantle to continue the legacy, all present in the city’s Handsworth Park played their part in making it a day befitting of what he created all those years ago.

With coach loads from Bristol, London, Manchester and beyond, despite its original purpose, this was a celebration of an amiable Wallen – a man whose foresight and diligence was, in many ways, ahead of its time.

Struggling against the tears, a highly emotional Terence paid his own personal homage to brother, Sted, saying; "It’s a year since I lost my brother and it’s hard… very hard. But, I know he’s watching me, guiding me and is very proud."

The event’s co-organizer, Steve Stephenson MBE; who presents the annual ‘Winston Davis Benefit Cricket Match’ in Bristol, said: "Sted and I have a very long history together – both here, in the UK, and back in Jamaica.

“He was a massive ‘giver’ and everywhere he went - he gave.

I will always remember him for that."

One of the many guests, Reverend Canon Eve Pitt, from the nearby Holy Trinity, called Sted; "a giant," adding; "he showed us an example."

WMCA is a Leader in Diversity

W

est Midlands Combined Authority is one of only 37 UK organisations to achieve the National Centre for Diversity’s prestigious Leaders in Diversity award.

Here, staff explain how the organisation has risen to the challenge…

“I was used to be being told what I couldn’t do, not what I could do,” says Lyndsey Roberts,

Lyndsey, 38, has been in post for a month – but it’s a job she almost didn’t apply for.

“Basically, I didn’t have the confidence,” she said. “I didn’t think I had the right experience, and I was used to getting on with my work in the background, staying in the shadows.”

WMCA Leadership

Lyndsey’s story is not unique. WMCA’s Leadership Commission, set up by Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street, spent nine months investigating why so few senior positions in organisations across the West Midlands were held by women, or people from the black and ethnic minority and LGBT communities.

It found employees from under-represented parts of society avoided applying for promotions due to a lack of confidence and ingrained business cultures which left them feeling excluded.

In June, the Commission produced a detailed report, Leaders Like You, with various recommendations to improve equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the region – and a challenge for WMCA to lead the way.

Now the authority’s commitment to EDI has been underlined by a national award – the National Centre for Diversity’s Leaders in Diversity accreditation. WMCA is one of

only 37 organisations in the UK to achieve this status, and its approach is already benefitting staff like Lyndsey.

It was WMCA chief executive, Deborah Cadman OBE, who first approached Lyndsey about a project management role with the Leadership Commission – a job Lyndsey says she would never have considered herself.

Sensing Lyndsey’s lack of confidence, Deborah provided one-to-one coaching and mock interviews to help her prepare.

Lyndsey explained: “I remember going into Deborah’s office for a chat about the job, and she said: ‘Don’t be scared.

Embrace it.’

Scrutiny

“That’s where my journey started, really. When the scrutiny officer advert was posted, I didn’t think I could do it because I didn’t have the confidence to speak up and challenge people.

“But when I went through the job specification with Deborah, she helped me see I’d already gained many relevant skills in my job, or in previous jobs.

“It was a lightbulb moment.”

Lyndsey nailed the interview, and was offered the job fulltime. The scrutiny officer has to challenge the Mayor, and the combined authority, to ensure money is being spent properly.

A month on, and she’s already made her mark.

Cllr Peter Hughes, chair of the WMCA scrutiny committee and Sandwell councillor, said: “When you see Lyndsey in

action, it’s strange to think she almost didn’t apply due to a lack of confidence. I’m pleased she was given the support she needed to really go for it.”

Mayor Andy Street, said: “The Leadership Commission’s recommendations threw down the gauntlet for WMCA, and we’ve been quick to respond to that challenge.

“A truly inclusive economy removes barriers and obstacles and offers real career opportunities for everyone to fulfil their potential, regardless of their background.

“Lyndsey’s success, and the Leaders in Diversity award, are just the beginning for us in the region. Next, we’ll be speaking to business leaders across the region to encourage them to recruit and promote more diversely.”

Diversity

Deborah Cadman believes businesses have a lot to gain by focussing on good EDI practices.

She said: “Lyndsey is a great candidate, but we almost missed out because she lacked confidence.

“Businesses can play a really important role in helping people in the West Midlands to reach their full potential by providing mentoring and support. Otherwise, employers could be missing out on the perfect candidates sitting right under their noses.”

The National Centre for Diversity accreditation was awarded after a lengthy review process, which saw inspectors visit the organisation, survey 245 staff members and rate the authority’s efforts on EDI. The inspector’s report stated: “WMCA is developing into an exemplary organisation in terms of EDI. I was impressed by the staff, the environment and the overall feel I got from the organisation, and by the value it placed on EDI and the investment undertaken to make WMCA a progressive and inclusive organisation.”

Jamaica Land We Love I

n this, the year of the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush to the UK, Jamaica’s 56th Independence Day had an extra special meaning for many Jamaicans, and friends of Jamaica alike in the diaspora.

At the New Testament Church of God, Lozells, in the presence of Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands John Crabtree OBE, Jamaica Deputy High Commissioner Angella Rose-Howell, Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Yvonne Mosquito, and Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street CBE, hundreds gathered to give praise for 56 years of Independence.

In his Independence Day message, Prime Minister the Most Honorable Andrew Holness spoke of how far Jamaica has come, as well as how far it has to go, concluding with “So, as

we celebrate and cerebrate our independence, let us remember that we are one Jamaican Family, striving for peace, integrity, creativity, sustainability and prosperity.

“And we do this with one love, one heart, giving thanks and praise to the Lord. Let’s get together this independence and make it alright.

“One love my brothers and sisters! Happy 56th Independence!”

The service saw praise and worship around the central theme of independence, and messages of support from key city and community leaders, businesspeople and locals.

There were also beautiful performances by dancers and a youth choir, and representation from the Royal Navy, everpresent at a number of diaspora events in the community.

n the first papal visit to Ireland in 40 years, Pope Francis celebrated Mass at Phoenix Park, in Dublin, saying: “We ask forgiveness for the abuses in Ireland, abuses of power, of conscience, and sexual abuses perpetrated by members with roles of responsibility in the church.

In a special way, we ask pardon for all the abuses committed in various types of institutions run

by males or female religious and by other members of the church, and we ask for forgiveness for those cases of manual work that so many young women and men were subjected to. We ask for forgiveness.”

He continued: “As a church, we did not show the survivors of abuse the compassion and the seeking of justice and truth through concrete actions.

We ask for forgiveness for some of the church hierarchy who did

not take charge of these situations and kept quiet and ask for forgiveness for all those times in which many single mothers were told that to seek their children who had been separated from them - and the same being said to daughters and sons themselves - that this was a mortal sin. This is not a mortal sin. We ask for forgiveness.”

Ending the prayer, Francis said: “Give us the strength to work for justice. Amen.”

The Pope’s whirlwind 36 hours in Ireland also took in visits to Croke Park and Knock as he thrills crowds, especially during his Popemobile tour, before he returned to Rome and the Vatican.

Sikh temple opened its doors to let a Muslim man pray when he couldn't find a mosque to do so. The man was said to have been spotted in Gurdwara Sahib Bercham Ipoh in Malaysia.

After it was shared on social media, the video footage of what had happened quickly went viral.

One person shared it in the group called Sikh Inside, writing: ‘A Muslim brother spotted doing Namaz [prayer] in Gurdwara Sahib Bercham Ipoh. Probably he couldn't find a mosque and

drop by Gurdwara to complete his Namaz. Powerful, God is One.’ Another posted the clip on Twitter, writing: ‘A Muslim guy spotted doing Namaz in Gurdwara Sahib because he couldn't find a mosque and dropped by at Gurdwara Sahib to complete his Namaz. Good thing nobody including Gurudwara Sahib committee member stopped him.’

Many deemed the footage 'beautiful' and 'commendable', saying that it sent out a very positive message to the world.

Spirituality and Religion

eople often think that Spirituality and Religion are one and the same however this couldn’t be further away from the truth.

Spirituality

The BUKONGO teaches that the differences between Spirituality and Religion are important and significant.

The main difference is; Spirituality indicates the practice, connection and initiation with the Universal Forces i.e. The Cosmos, The Nature, The Ancestors also manifest the Force's and the knowledge of the Universe.

Spirituality is to manifest these Creative attributes which exist within the Source, therefore to connect with the source relates to an individual being 'in-contact' with these forces invisible and visible.

Only through adherence to the Comic Laws = Spiritual Principles, can an individual attain Spiritual growth and maturity, it is these values that are ‘A WAY OF LIFE’ and the corner stone for the student of African Spirituality.

Traditional Religion

This is a system of knowledge that has been 'inherited' from generation to generation.

This system also relies on the adoration/ideology of leaders which may include idols and sacrifice and may not necessarily be in connection with the Universal Forces.

Custom heritage can be customs that are used without knowing their origins; this can be a dis-advantage to inhabitants of a country simply because they are not aware that they are following a tradition that became fashionable due to colonialism for example.

Our identity and the names we call in our rituals and ceremonies are extremely important as you can imagine. Our Ancestors taught us NOT to call on names we don’t identify with as this can lead to a connection with another people’s Ancestors.

Religion

Religion, as we know it indicates a ‘following’, glorification and or adoring of an individual or system that is meant to be a mediator between an individual and the source.

These methods are employed to stop or retard the spiritual advancement of all people.

Culture

Dr. Henrik Clarke reminded us that they laughed at our names, so we changed them...only for them to laugh at us again for changing them...

Recently I have been highlighted the importance of identity; naturally this starts with our mind-set and is expressed through our names.

One thing for sure is that until we the adults start to learn and speak our Ancestral language and take our names from them, the youth will always feel a dis-

connect from their culture.

In our culture every name has its own vibrational frequency and meaning. Every letter is the crystallization of a cosmic force.

Every name should connect the individual to their clan, their Ancestors. In Alex Haley’s "ROOTS", Kunta-Kinte was given the name 'Toby' to disconnect him from himself and his "Culture"...

'Culture,' is natural Divine Inspiration and vision, which manifests 'five' Natural elements: 1 - Language 2 - Spirituality (which develops into religion) 3 - Education 4 - Tradition 5 - History People without 'natural culture,’ are like a lost people, ultimately to be dominated by others which will lead into an empty darkness.

African people have a rich natural culture heritage, with cultural patterns, practices and traditions, spanning thousands upon thousands of years.

This culture although seldom referenced to by non-Africans when examining the origins and development of human-beings, is actually the foundations upon all ancient and modern theories are based.

Although often cited as simple, crude, childish and even savage by many researchers in the past and at present, African culture offers us a unique, indepth insight into ourselves, our environment, nature the cosmos and the Divine Intelligence that is absolute, invisible and visible everywhere and within everything (natural), most importantly within ourselves.

City Town Hall dons Indian tri-colour for 72nd Independence Day Celebrations A s billions across the world celebrated the 71st anniversary of India’s independence, the Consulate General of India, in Birmingham, held its own grand celebration to mark the day, and to pay respects to the architects of the nation.

As Consul General, Dr Aman Puri, unfurled the national flag it saluted the heroic and brave patriots who contributed to the creation of an independent India.

The event was marked by the rendition of the national anthem and reading of the Honourable President Ram Nath Kovind’s message.

Following this a grand cultural event at the city’s Town Hall was attended by around 800 people who included: Indian community leaders, business executives, media representatives, and other invited guests.

Local British community representatives were also present.

He enumerated India’s contribution in the cultural, economic and scientific fields and informed the gathering of the ambitious ‘Gagan Yaan’ project announced by the Honourable Indian Prime Minister from the ramparts of Red fort, which aims to take India’s first indigenous manned mission to space by 2022.

A day of elation and remembrance, plus a chance to cherish and respect the very gift of freedom, the Consul General also informed the gathering that the world's largest government funded healthcare scheme, which was announced recently, will be rolled out this month (September).

CHTA at Clinton Global Initiative The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) was out in full force recently for the second formal meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery.

As this year’s hurricane season approached its peak months, a number of the Association’s senior officials were among more than 350 leaders from government, business, and civil society who participated in the important discussions convened by President Bill Clinton on August 7 amid various Caribbean nations’ continued revival from hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

CHTA President Patricia Affonso-Dass led a delegation that included CHTA Immediate Past President Karolin Troubetzkoy; Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Ledesma; Chief Marketing Officer Matt Cooper; Director of Membership Development, Martha Valdivia; and Director of Communications, Adriana Serna to the CGI forum at the University of Miami.

Smart Nutrition Cities BINDI Birmingham India Nutrition Initiative

I

n July, I was invited to attend Pune in India as part of reciprocal delegation, for the BINDI (BINDI – Birmingham India Nutrition Initiative) project.

BINDI is a ‘Nutrition Smart City’ initiative involves the development of policies and practices through a learning partnership between Birmingham and Pune.

It was an incredible opportunity for Birmingham to work with India on an issue that both cities have so much in common.

It was full on and every day was packed with meetings and visits from dawn to dusk, we visited hospitals both private and state run institutions, nurseries, pre school facilities, schools, local kitchens, local universities and much more.

In this extended article I would like to share some of my thoughts.

The Food Foundation was sponsored by the Tata trust to lead on this work. Birmingham is seen as being very progressive in this area because of some wonderful work being done by Sheelen Meelu a registered nutritionist and co-founder of Harborne Food School.

The Harborne Food School was set up in March 2014 to tackle food related public health and environmental issues faced by the local community and support the public to make healthier, more sustainable food choice.

Nutrition

The Food School offers a fantastic space for delivering community cooking classes and demonstrations.

The first phase of the Bindi project focused on establishing background data and visits to each city. The leadership of Pune came to Birmingham at the beginning of May 2018.

The first observation they made was how quiet the streets where compared to Pune. Both cities have major problems related to malnutrition.

The main observed problem in Birmingham is over-nutrition causing obesity with 25% of 10 year olds clinically obese.

This has an effect in adulthood with diabetes, hypertension and vascular diseases. Pune has an

l Children eating lunch emerging problem related to obesity but is also affected by under-nutrition causing growth stunting etc.

This is known as the “Double Burden of Malnutrition”. They share another characteristic, being affected by poverty, with food banks in Birmingham and similar free-food distribution schemes in Pune.

The Bindi project is not just about highlighting threats, it is about creating and maximising opportunities.

As the food industry locally accounts for 6.3% of city employment, the largest single sector (the UK average is 5.6%).

Yet reference to this area scarcely features in major city and regional economic plans.

The Commonwealth Games is an important point in the history of Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, not just for sport, but the development of the city.

The approach to food, it’s local

use, global reach as well as its economic impact, should be a long-lasting legacy.

Pune is the 9th largest city in India, with a population of at least 3.1 million. Birmingham is the second largest local authority in Europe with a population of 1.1 million people.

Pune is located 100km south of Mumbai, in the state of Maharashtra. It shares several characteristics with Birmingham including a young population, attracting migrants and having many universities.

Pune

It has a well-developed motor industry, information technology sector and Higher Education sectors. The Air Force also has a considerable presence in the city of Pune.

Pune (and India) is changing rapidly with various sources showing a sharp rise in obesity with some reduction in underweight children.

A key measure in Pune is “stunting” of children. The latest data suggests that over 22% of children are stunted.

There is a marked female/male difference with girls and women more likely to be underweight or stunted.

For example nearly 15% of women in Pune are below normal weight compared to 9% of men.

From observations the big differences in obesity levels between rich and poor and the pattern is found to be highest in the poorest.

Different ways of working across the cities also have impact on the change in the food habits of the person. One excellent example was found at Grant Medicinal Foundation a private hospital.

They started to weigh all the food wasted, then letting staff know how many people it could have feed.

There is strong link between birth, nutrition and future health and wellbeing. It’s not just a pregnant mother whose nutritional intake is important.

It is also the grandmother’s nutritional intake that needs to be nutritious according to scientific studies.

We met the people from the food standard association in Pune who really stressed the importance of high quality food, and the work they were doing with traders and the fortification program that they led in Pune.

Conference

At the conference hosted by the leadership in Pune and chaired by the Ms. Mukta Tilak, Honorable Mayor, Pune, The Mayor was very keen to ensure citizens where aware of issues and talked about the milk banks, and some pressing issues within the city why the fortification of food products had become so important.

I talked about the abundance of learning experiences from the site visits in Pune and my emerging thoughts about the ideas of fortification of foods where needed.

My key message was that if this project is to grow and work in both cities, we would have to keep talking and working together.

Thinking out of the box, and making some very bold decisions to increase the life chances of our citizens. Not just for this generation but also for future generations.

Both cities offer children free school meals in state schools. In Pune this is organised through a series of female self-help cooperatives.

Hospitals in Pune cherish the role that diet plays in recovery and this was shown in visits to a variety of settings.

Whilst data is not available for Birmingham, it is estimated that a third of those over 65 in hospital are malnourished and a similar amount in care homes are under nourished.

The delegation from Pune noted the large number of fast-food outlets in Birmingham. I also noticed the growth in fast-food sales in Pune.

The penetration of the latter is obvious in street and other food outlets as well as advertising, especially around schools and other places of high foot-fall.

This is rapidly changing the environment and the “social norms” in Pune. This is very

The growth in technology affecting both cities is obvious with “Uber Eats” in Pune and “Deliveroo” in Birmingham (as well as Just Eat).

Home deliveries (Ocado etc) are not currently a feature of Pune life.

In addition to fast-food being seen as westernised, socially acceptable and popular there are far fewer vegetables being eaten in Pune, which is similar to Birmingham.

The visit reminded us that obesity is just the observed problem and that the underlying issues need to be addressed in order to begin to affect change in eating habits.

To end food is a great way to overcome inequalities in a city.

Over the past three years our vision in Birmingham is to be ‘A great city to grow up in’.

Improving the food and nutrition system will have benefits for children and young people, especially the “obesity epidemic”.

We also strive to be “a great city to grow old in”. There is good evidence to show that people growing old in the city are at risk of nutritional deficiencies and malnutrition.

This is no different to other cities, but our aspirations is for this to change. I will provide an update on how we are progressing with the Bindi project.

Hospice calls on Birmingham for buckets of support!

l ‘Bucketeer’ Alison Deere A local hospice is taking over Birmingham this September with its annual ‘Big Brum Bucket’ campaign – and it’s asking big-hearted volunteers from the city to get on board.

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is encouraging hundreds of volunteers to join the citywide bucket collection to help raise vital funds for people living with life-limiting illness.

Taking place on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 September, the initiative aims to bring local people together whilst showing their support for the Selly Parkbased charity.

Collections will be happening at supermarkets, shopping centres and high streets across the city, including Birmingham New Street Station and Colmore Row. Other locations include Harborne, Kings Heath and Solihull.

Alison Deere took part in the hospice’s Big Brum Bucket collection in 2017 and has already signed up to become a ‘bucketeer’ this year.

Fundraising family donate over £2k for Neonatal Unit

l ‘Rachel and Jez Booker with their sons, Max and Oliver and their family have donated an astonishing £2167.54 to fund new neonatal equipment at a hospital after the outstanding care they received there.

Rachel and Jez Booker welcomed sons, Max and Oliver, at Heartlands Hospital, in 2012.

Rachel gave birth to the twins at Birmingham Women’s Hospital however the births had numerous complications. Her delivery to Max had to be assisted by forceps, whilst Oliver (Oli) became stuck for nearly an hour.

She was unconscious and was subsequently rushed into theatre for an emergency C-Section to get Oli out.

Once he arrived, the staff informed his parents that he had suffered brain damage brought on by Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), in other words, oxygen deprivation.

As there were no cooling mats at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, his parents were told that Oli would have to be rushed immediately to Heartlands Hospital in order to place Oli on a cooling mat to help reduce future impact.

It was 5 days until the boys were finally reunited and Rachel and Jez were able to hold their sons together as a family for the first time at Heartlands Hospital. Oli was able to come home at 9 days old.

Reflecting back on his experience, Jez said: “Rachel, myself and our family all have a huge amount to be grateful for as we were one of the lucky families.

We believe that the cooling technology saved Oli’s life and he has grown up to show no symptoms of damage to his brain” To say thank you to the Neonatal Ward at Heartlands Hospital all the family have taken part in fundraising to supply them with state of the art equipment that will help babies like Oliver.

The money has been raised by Rachel’s brother, Matthew, taking part in the Dart River 10K swim, Jez running 10K and the Lichfield Twins Group that Rachel was a part in fundraising too.

Sian Averill, Fundraising Manager at Heartlands Hospital Charity said: “I cannot thank the family enough for the amount they have raised for the Charity!

The money raised will make a huge difference to babies when they need cooling to reduce the risk of brain damage. Things like this are the ‘added extras’ that prove to be life-changing in the long run.”

LGA Green Paper Summary

ocal Authorities have waited for a decade for the Governments proposals on adult social care funding; over the years there have been many indications of white and green papers emerging to address this but all have failed to address the issue.

In recent years we have had to put up with short term fixes and have been very grateful for the sticking plasters in the form of the Better Care Funding and improved Better Care Funding to help meet the increasing demand for adult social care services as services have been on breaking point for several years.

I am delighted that the LGA has decided that enough is enough and are forcing a public discussion on the future of adult social care and how we are to fund such critical mandatory services adequately.

The LGA green paper ‘The lives we want to lead’ for adult social care and wellbeing has been upfront and clear that this is not just about funding but critically on

the need to reconfigure the way we provide care and be more focused on prevention and personalisation.

Looking at how we need to transform adult social care so we can encourage and support people to become more aware of their wellbeing and enjoy the best possible quality of life using our hospitals less often.

It is time to be honest about the funding and decide who pays for this and shifting the discussions and debates on funding for adult social care to realising the impact and worth of social care services and how through social care we reduce the crisis’s in our hospitals.

For far too long the preoccupation has been on hospitals waiting lists and delays in transfers of care ‘bed blocking’.

There still remains a lot of confusion on the worth of social care how social care is funded and that unlike the health service it is not a free service but a means tested service.

Adult Social Care services are vast and provide a range of services from providing help with

everyday tasks such as getting out of bed, washing, day care access and residential services.

Adult Social Care focuses on helping people remain independent and supporting those discharged from hospital.

Empowering people of all ages, abilities and a range of conditions and needs to live with dignity, independence and control and with choices.

Adult Social Care has been transforming over recent years to community prevention with the focus on individual wellbeing, population and place not structures, buildings, systems and silos.

Throughout the LGA report which you can find on the LGA website www. futureofadultsocialcare.co.uk, there a series of consultation questions to understand views and stimulate a nationwide debate on how best adult social care can be funded and what how that support and wellbeing should be provided to best meet the needs of local people and support us in looking

after our families and those who have assessed needs.

Local authorities are here to support and ensure people receive good services which help them live economically active and healthy lives.

I really would like to urge you all to have a look at the document and respond to this debate. In Birmingham alone over the past few years we have had to make millions of pounds of savings.

There have been and will continue to be some very difficult decisions we have to make.

Some we would need to make irrespective of austerity and the funding crisis, as we know this is the right direction of travel to provide modern adult social care services which meets the needs and aspirations of our citizens now and in the future.

However, as it is there are going to be some very difficult decisions that local authorities are making and will continue to make which would like to avoid but there is no longer the funds to pay for services that are not mandatory.

The Steve Bull Foundation and Cure Leukaemia are joining forces to put on fantastic evening of entertainment with soul singing sensation Beverley Knight at Birmingham’s ICC on October 6.

Proceeds from the event will be divided between the two Midlands-based charities, which make a substantial impact in different areas of the local community.

The Foundation supports a huge variety of vital good causes, most recently Promise Dreams and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, whilst Cure Leukaemia is committed to connecting blood cancer patients to pioneering and potentially life-saving drug and transplant treatments.

Government Protection Follows Three-Year Min Lease Proposal The government proposal to introducing three-year minimum leases has assured that shorthold tenancy will fuel a massive growth in the availability of property for rental in this country – with many feeling that the government is bowing to the voices of those who shout loudest while ignoring the silent majority who have bailed them out of the housing crisis over the past 30 years.

Previous governments had removed large swathes of available property by introducing the right to buy and the former rent acts effectively prevented private landlords from purchasing and letting houses safely.

Communities Secretary, James Brokenshire announced the proposal of a three-year minimum tenancy, incorporating a break clause after six months with the government also to act to prevent the use of new government funding schemes for the purchase of "unjustified" new leasehold homes, Brokenshire said.

This announcement builds on previous measures tackling the unjustified use of the leasehold model for new-build housing in England, following its consultation of July 2017.

The private rented market has grown through the enterprise of individuals, many of whom own a single property, but of course there are many out there who have used this as a means to build up a substantial income-producing portfolio.

These landlords are, for the most part, honest and genuine investors who are seeking only a reasonable return on capital that cannot be obtained anywhere else because of the artificially low interest rates that the government has introduced.

Tenants and landlords can choose to agree longer terms between themselves, although the majority choose not to do so.

"Ensuring that landlords have the flexibility to recover their asset smoothly is vital to protect investment in the sector," the government said in its consultation.

The government is seeking views on this model, along with action it could take to overcome the legal and behavioural barriers to landlords offering longer tenancies.

orean investor, Hana Financial Investments, have acquired the Gallagher Shopping Park in the West Midlands from KKR and Quadrant Estates for £175m – the largest single-asset sale in the UK retail warehouse market this year.

The investors, the first Korean investors to enter the UK retail sector, have said the transaction is the largest single asset sale in the UK retail warehouse sector this year and the first time they have ever entered the sector in the country.

On the investment, KAIM Chief Investment Officer, Sangmin Lee, said: "We are delighted to have acquired this asset, which offers our investors an attractive combination of secure income returns and longer term upside potential.

We are attracted to it by its inherent strength evidenced by the retailers’ trading performance and location. We look forward to working with Quadrant as our local asset manager to secure the future performance of the park during our investment period."

"We backed a fundamentally good asset in need of repositioning,” Guillaume Cassou, member and head of European real estate at KKR, said.

“Quadrant implemented an intensive business plan over four years that has resulted in a great end product, which we have now

sold to long term incomefocussed capital.

We were delighted to transact with Hana and KAIM on their first foray into the UK market."

ormer Barcelona and Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o has promised to buy a house for ex-Cameroon captain Norbert Owona, who is homeless.

Owona's sad situation alerted Eto'o who paid him a visit in hospital and, according to former player, Joseph Kamga, gave him money. He's also promised to buy Owona a house in a brilliant gesture.

Owona, 67, played for Cameroon in the 1960's before retiring from international duty in 1972. He tragically lost his

family then suffered inguinal hernia and ultimately became homeless.

Living in brutal conditions following a slew of terrible events he said he was unable to get medical help because he had no money or home, having spent all his earnings, which included savings, to pay for the cancer care of his wife and kids.

Eto'o, Cameroon's leading scorer and most-capped player, also played for Real Madrid and Inter Milan and is the first player to win two European continental trebles.

Shelter calling for change The housing and homelessness charity, Shelter, have stated that the housing crisis in England; ‘isn’t about houses – it’s about people.

It’s the family struggling to meet next month’s mortgage payment’ and that ‘the lack of affordable, decent homes is affecting families across the whole country.’

They say that young families renting a rundown flat are often wondering if they’ll ever be able to afford a home of their own - whilst children living in temporary accommodation are forced to change schools every time they move.

With home ownership slipping out of reach, more families are renting from private landlords which, subsequently, mean that the levels of homelessness are rising.

A statement, from Shelter, said; “Things have to change. Urgent reform is needed - which is why we are campaigning tirelessly to end the housing crisis and to make sure everyone has a decent, affordable home.”

he latest statistics released by the Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT) reveal that a total of 40,907 visitors from the UK travelled to Costa Rica in the first half of 2018 – representing an increase of 2.5% compared to the same period in 2017.

This steady growth is a reflection of the upward trend in UK visitors to Costa Rica that has been seen in the last few years, enhanced by the launch of the BA direct flights from London in April 2016.

The latest figures position the UK market as Costa Rica's second largest source market in Europe, only surpassed by France, which has received 44,843 visitors from January to June this year. All other European countries have also seen an increase in visitor figures, including Germany (+6.8) and Spain (+1.6%).

China to End 2-Child Policy A social media post by a state-run newspaper have suggested that China is set to end its decades-long policy of determining the number of children that couples can have.

The country’s has loosened its family planning policy as its population greys, birth rates slow and its workforce declines. In 2016, the government allowed couples in urban areas to have two children, replacing a one-child policy enforced since 1979.

The draft civil code also includes a one-month “cooling off” period in which couples filing for divorce can withdraw their case.

Revisions to the draft civil code will be submitted to China’s annual parliamentary meeting in March 2020.

Speculation that China may further ease its two-child policy was sparked when China Post unveiled the design of a stamp for release next year that features a family of two pigs and three cheerful piglets.

Debate on the policy was further stoked after two Chinese researchers proposed forcing couples with fewer than two children to pay into a ‘procreation fund,’ an idea that was widely criticised.

Irene To Be Lead Pilot on Maiden Flight with Presidential Passenger

he first African captain on the world’s latest plane, the Boeing B787 Dreamliner, Captain Irene Koki Mutungi was the first ever and only female pilot at Kenya Airways for about six years.

Flying as a First Officer on the 767-300ER, the second largest aircraft in their fleet after

the Boeing B777-300ER, it was reward for her undeniable dedication to fulfil what was her long-time dream.

Having enrolled in flight school at Nairobi's Wilson Airport, where she obtained her Private Pilot's License, she continued her pilot education, in Oklahoma City in the United States, where she was awarded the Commercial

Pilot's License, by the Federal Aviation Authority there.

On her return to Kenya, in 1995, she was immediately hired by Kenya Airways, as their first female pilot – becoming their first and only female pilot.

Subsequently, in 2004, she went on to become the first African woman to qualify to captain a commercial aircraft.

Praised and Lorded by her male counterparts, her success, she says, is all about having a positive outlook on life. “If you look at yourself as successful in

all you do, then you will indeed succeed,” she said.

With her fair share of good and bad experiences; from passengers, weather and aircrafts, she recalls: “Air passengers are one set of people you learn to deal with, and I have learnt how to fairly deal with them.” On a positive message, she says: “If you look at yourself as a success in all you do, then you will succeed.”

Now a commander, she is always right up there with the stars, and has proven herself beyond the skies.

wo brothers from Valley Stream, in New York, earned silver medals at the USA Taekwondo Nationals in Richmond, Va. Earlier.

Brandon and Bradley Sealy, from the Taekwon V Academy each earned silver at the competition, with Brandon competing in four matches. He said that he felt confident and relaxed, which is important in a sport that requires a lot of psychological control.

Representing Jamaica, Brandon went on to win gold at the 2018 Pan Am TaeKwonDo Open, in the Youth category, in Spokane.

“I think it was the best I’ve performed in a while,” a beaming

Brandon said. “You have to know that you’re better than the other person when you’re going in…I don’t really worry about how good the person is.”

13 year old Bradley, who competed in five matches, at the Nationals, echoed his brother’s confidence. “I thought that once I got into that ring, I was going to win and dominate,” he said.

The boys’ parents also practice Taekwondo with Master Tony Byon at the Taekwondo V Academy.

Mother, Sandra, said: “My sons’ success in the sport has coincided with their academic success,” she said. “I attribute it to the focus that Taekwondo has brought into their lives.”

FA backs new safe standing proposals The English Football Association is supporting the call for safe standing at football grounds in England, with the proviso that "there is clear evidence that satisfies authorities."

Their stance follows that of the Premier League and EFL who both have also said they would support clubs' choice to install safe standing in the top two tiers of English football.

Standing in English football's top two divisions was outlawed by the Football Spectators' Act in 1989 following recommendations made in the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.

The FA said that; "they supported the announcement from Sports Minister, Tracey Crouch, to conduct an external analysis of evidence in relation to the all-seater policy."

It added that they "support clubs and leagues in having the option to choose whether they wish to provide standing options for supporters should there be clear evidence that satisfies the authorities over safety and security."

The Football Supporters' Federation (FSF), which has been campaigning for the introduction of safe standing to combat the problem of people standing up in seats and potentially causing injury, said the FA's support was "hugely encouraging."

FSF's Peter Daykin said; "The FA's stance was not surprising" and that "the FA understands the issues all too well.

The government said it wouldn't move until all the football authorities spoke with one voice, which is understandable, but now they are."

"It's very much in our minds, big Cyrille not being with us. It's still such a shock,” he said.

"It'll be 40 years since I was in China and first went on the Great Wall, so there are a lot of reasons why I'm looking forward to it.”

Batson and his fellow walkers are raising money through sponsorships as they prepare for the five-day hike across the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Apart from supporting Albion Foundation projects, some of the funds raised will also be shared with the Cyrille Regis Legacy Trust which is in the process of being established by the striker’s family.

Empty Profit?

Always known as the ‘people’s game,’ recent revelations now show that, during this first season of the current broadcast deal, more than half of England’s Premier League clubs could play in empty stadiums and still made a pre-tax profit.

In 2016-17, during which clubs benefited from a record £8.3bn in global TV revenue, matchday income contributed less than 20p in every £1 earned by 18 top-flight outfits.

Dr Rob Wilson, a sport finance specialist at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “The previous £3.018bn broadcast deal struck in 2012 signalled a permanent change to top-flight football as a business in England.”

Overall, ticket sales make up about a quarter of the average club’s income, according to analysis of the 2016-17 accounts of 61 football clubs from England’s top four divisions that provided a figure for ticket sales or similar income. Some relied on it far more than others.

After the women' won their fourth straight European Championship bronze medal following a comprehensive 69-39 victory over France, the men’s team won gold at the World Championships - with the women then taking silver.

The GB Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team claim the 2018 World Championships crown in a dramatic final game showdown against the much-fancied Olympics champion, the USA. It was the perfect repost with a powerful American side having served GB their only defeat in an otherwise unblemished tournament record during the pool stages.

Head Coach’s Haj Bhania’s team dominated the 2018 World Championships in Hamburg as the squads return to the UK with a total twenty four medals in their hand luggage.
