An Island of Strangers and Starmer’s Immigration Plans

By Dr Tony Talburt

One issue that has agitated many people in British politicalcirclesandthebroadersociety, especiallysince the1960s,hasbeenthequestionof howtocontrolthe numberofimmigrantscomingtosettleinthecountry. Backin1968whentheBritishpolitician,EnochPowell made his statement about his worries of the country foaming with much Blood because of the inflow of immigrants from the Commonwealth countries, although he was dismissed from the Shadow Cabinet the next day, the divisive nature of this topic has remained as contentious as ever. Recently, Sir Keir Starmerannouncedwhatappearedtobeamajorshift in the government’s approach to the immigration question.Oneremarkappearstohaveaddedfueltothe political fire. This is his reference to the country becominganislandofstrangers.

The implication seems to be that rising immigration levels are the primary cause of this. But are there broaderissuesatplay?SirKeirStarmerrecentlymadea statementaboutthegovernment’sdrivetotacklerising immigration numbers. The ‘incalculable damage’ to Britishsociety, andtherisksof becomingan‘islandof strangers’withoutbetterintegration, meanstheremust bemeasurestocurbtherisingmigrationfigures. His apparent change in mood might have been associated with the success of the right-wing Reform Party which won many seats in the recent local elections. He also announced the raising of English Languagestandardsformigrantsandtheirdependents andtheneedforthemtowaittenyearsratherthanfive toapplyforsettlementorcitizenship.Thereisaspecial considerationforhighlyskilledpeoplesuchasdoctors, nursesandengineerswhocouldbefast-tracked.

ThemainemphasisbyStarmerisontheneedtotacklethe country's risks of becoming an island of strangers through curbing immigration levels. Probably in anticipation of this governmentannouncement, afewweeksagotheHomeOffice stated that migrants will have their visas squeezed to stop people from overstaying and claiming asylum. Under the plans, peoplefromcountriessuchasPakistan,NigeriaandSri Lankawouldbecloselymonitored.

The problem seems to be that people have been arriving in Britaintoworkandthensubsequentlyclaimingasylumstatus.

The idea is to have more stringent examination of visas applicationsfrompeopleinthesethreecountries.Thefactthat these are three countries of predominantly ‘non-white’ populations, givesthisannouncementtheaddeddimensionof aracistslur.

Ancient Indian skeleton gets museum home six years after excavation

A 1,000-year-old human skeleton which was buried sitting cross-legged in India has been moved to a museum six years afteritwasexcavated.

Ithadbeenreportedthattheskeletonhad been left inside an unprotected tarpaulin shelter close to the excavation site in western Gujarat state since 2019 because of bureaucratic wrangling. The skeleton wasshiftedtoalocalmuseum, justafew milesawayfromwhereitwasunearthed. Authorities say that it will be placed on displayforthepublicafteradministrative procedures are completed. Mahendra Surela, curator of the Archaeological Experiential Museum in Vadnagar where the skeleton has now been shifted, said that the skeleton was transported with "utmost care" and under the supervision ofseveralexperts.

He added that officials of the ArchaeologicalSurveyofIndia(ASI)-the agency responsible for preservation of archaeologicalresearch-willexaminethe skeletonbeforetakingadecisiononwhere andhowtheskeletonshouldbedisplayed inthemuseum.Itiscurrentlyplacednext to the reception and is fenced in by a protectivebarrier.

"It is likely that we may shift it to the second floor, where a photograph of the skeleton is already placed," Mr Surela said.

Archaeologist Abhijit Ambekar, who discovered the skeleton, said that he was happy that the significant find was getting the attention it deserved. Ambekar had earlier said that the skeleton was a rare discovery as similar remains had been found at only three other sitesinIndia.

But as officials argued over who shouldtakechargeoftheskeleton,it remained in a make-shift tent close to the excavation site, unprotected by security guards and exposed to natural elements. Experts say that the skeleton likely belongs to the Solankiperiod.

TheSolankidynasty, alsoknownas the Chaulukya dynasty, ruled over parts of modern-day Gujarat between 940 to 1300 CE. The skeletonhadmanagedtosurvivethe passage of time because the soil aroundithadremainedundisturbed and displayed characteristics that aidedpreservation.

Mr Ambekar said that the remains couldshedlightonthephenomenon of "samadhi burials" - an ancient burialpracticeamongHinduswhere revered figures were buried rather thancremated.

She recalled holding her twins during her first graduation and now feels honoured to be part of theirs. “I remember the day that they were born, and I remember them being a part of my graduation, and now I get to be a part of theirs,”she shared.

The sisters credit their mom as the reason they’ve come this far. Kamiya said, “I think my mom is the best.

“I think she’s a great role model. And I thank God that he gave me my mom… and allowed me to have somebody like her to look up to and to aspire to be like.”

Quila was deeply moved by the praise. She reflected on her parenting and said hearing her daughters’ words assured her she had done something right.

At a deeply engaging and unapologetically bold conversation led by HRH Changambire J. Maponga, King Woman HM Mambokadazi, andtherevered Mzee Professor James Small, the cry to reconstruct and decolonizeAfricansocietyrang clear.

Framedaroundsevenpowerful pillars—governance, agriculture, education, business, sports, health, and spirituality —the dialogue dissected the residual scars of colonialism while laying a roadmap to cultural recovery and African renaissance. One of the stark truths addressed was the alienation of Africans from their traditional governance systems.Speaker1underscored howprecolonialAfricathrived on community-led leadership thatvaluedelders’wisdomand collectivedecision-making.

Colonial imposition replaced this with bureaucratic models that alienated people from powerandhandedcontrol toaforeignelite.Today, thesestructurespersistin weakeningself-governance, making it crucial to reintroduce communitybased systems and empowerlocalgovernance as the soul of African political life.

“African kitchens were once our pharmacies,” declared Speaker 1, reflecting on how women traditionally anchoredthefoodsystem —from planting to preparation—creating a culture that nourished bothbodyandcommunity.

The advent of colonialism introduced exploitative cash crops, junk food culture, and disconnection from the land. The discussion acknowledged that landownershiplaws— instituted by colonizers and maintained postindependence—left manyAfricanfarmers landless and food insecure.Zimbabwe’s landreformrecession washighlightedasa cautionarytale.

The proposed solution? A comprehensive plan to revitalize African food cultureandempowerlocal farming rooted in indigenous knowledge and communal land use. "African education must teach us who we are, not whocolonizerswantusto be."

The current system, criticizedforpromotingrote learningoverpracticalskills, particularly in agriculture and technology, remains disconnected from the continent's realities. The need for curricula that centre African history, philosophy, andinnovation was stressed. Education must transition from a colonialrelictoaliberating force, producing not just workersbutproblem-solvers steepedinAfricanidentity.

Colonial economic systems enforced dependency through foreign-controlled banks, currencies, and ownership of natural resources. As the conversation noted, many African nations still operate within these parameters. “True decolonization means owning our resources and writing our own economic story,” said Speaker1.

The role of micro-economies, community banking, and indigenous trade systems was explored as a path to selfsufficiency. A task force was proposed to assess and implementstrategiestoreclaim African economic agency and break the chains of neocolonial capitalism. While sports and entertainment are celebrated worldwide, the speakers cautioned against their use as tools of mass distraction.

“We cheer while we starve,” lamented Speaker 2, highlighting how these industries, often foreigndominated, divert attention from socio-political engagement. Historically used by colonial powers to pacify dissent, these sectors must now be redirected as instruments of cultural storytelling and empowerment. A campaign to raise awareness about the manipulative power of entertainment was among the actionitemsdiscussed.

The COVID-19 pandemic spotlighted longstanding distrust between African communities and global health systems.Speaker1recalledhow colonialmedicinewasusedasa weaponof control, andmodern policies often mirror that legacy.Additionally, relianceon foreign pharmaceuticals, data systems, and surveillance tech posessovereigntyrisks.

The conversation called for a continent-wide health awakening, emphasizing traditional medicine, local tech innovation, and health sovereignty. Perhaps the most passionate discourse centred on spirituality."Tocontrolapeople, you mustfirstdisconnectthemfromtheir gods,"Speaker2argued.

Colonization demonized African spiritualsystems, replacingthemwith dogmasthatservedcolonialinterests. Theurgentcallwasforarenaissance inindigenousspirituality—reclaiming rituals, reconnectingwithnature, and restoringthemoralfabricof African society. Spirituality, they said, is not separate from governance or education—itisthefoundation.

The discussion culminated in action items with a unified objective: total decolonization. These include the creation of a continental task force, revitalization of African food systems, a decolonized education roadmap, campaigns around entertainment consciousness, and post-COVID strategies rooted in African resilience. In the words of HRH Changambire Maponga: “Africaisnotpoor.Sheisrobbed.To heal, wemustremember, reclaim, and rebuild.”

New NHS diagnostic centre in shopping centre aiming to slash waiting times

A new NHS diagnostic centre located in Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre is set to significantly reduce waiting lists and enable earlier diagnosis and treatment for patients in theWestMidlands.

The £15 million North Solihull Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), officially opened by Stephen Kinnock, Minister of State for Care, has been providing appointments since last month. This innovative facility is believed to be thefirstof itskindinthe region to operate from a shopping centre and offers a wide range of diagnostic services including X-rays, CT scans, andultrasounds.

These areas fall within the top 10% most deprived nationally, with men living up to 12.8 years less, and women 11.1 years less, compared to those in the town’s least deprived parts. “This facility brings vital services closer to where people live, making healthcare more accessible and convenient,” Tolley said.

Among the first patients to use the centre was Tim Denton-Hawkes, who had waited over six months for tests related to his back pain. “This is a grand idea and something the NHS should have introduced years ago,”he remarked.
