Starmer, the Gentleman, who is for Turning

n October 1980 at the Conservative Party Conference in Brighton, Prime Minister Thatcher made her famous statement which ended with the words ‘the lady’s not for turning.’ The context for thisstatementcameagainstherrefusaltoperforma U-turninresponsetooppositiontoherliberalisation of the economy. The iron lady of British politics became known for her tough-talking steadfast position on how she felt the economy should be managed.Thisseemstobeinsharpcontrasttowhat we are seeing with the current resident at 10 DowningStreet.SirKeirStarmerhasbeenforcedto makeafewbigpoliticalU-turnswithinhisfirstyear in office. Are these indications of weakness, uncertainty and incompetence, or do they reveal a leader who is prepared to listen, take advice and makeappropriatechanges?

During the election campaign last year, Starmer made several promises as part of his party’s manifesto pledges which seemed popular, and presumably helped get him the keys to Downing Street.Unfortunately, hehassinceperformedseveral spectacular U-turns. He told the BBC that a labour government would spend more than the Tories on greenprojectsif itwontheelectionbutsoonhadto bin a long-standing promise to spend £28bn a year on the green industries of the future. Before the electionsStarmerpromisedtoscrapprivateschools’ charitable status. However, the party now says charitable status will remain, but VAT will be imposed on private schools and businesses instead. There was much controversy over the winter fuel payments, as pensioners not in receipt of pension credits or other means-tested benefits would no longerreceivewinterfuelpaymentsof £300.

Although this was a very unpopular decision, it came as a surprise when the Prime Minister decided to scrap this policy. The most recent U-turn was in relation to the grooming gangs inquiry. Initially the government’s position was to down-play the significance of any calls for a public inquiry, only to now decide to accept Baroness Louise Casey’s recommendation for an inquiry.

All politicians face the difficult choices of having to make decisions and promises concerning the future without the benefit of knowing for certain what is around the corner. One of the most popular arguments used by Starmer and his senior ministers is that they under-estimated the extent of the serious financial situation left behind by the previous regime. Because of the ‘black holes’, or the Tories crashing the economy, the current government is no longer able to provide funds to support some of its initial promises. It could be asked whether the labour government was too naïve. Given the uncertain nature of the global economy because of such factors as the Ukraine Russia war, Israel and Gaza war, and now Israel and Iran war, as well as the uncertainties of the Donald Trump’s regime (as seen with his short lived trade tariffs), Should Labour have been more cautious with its promises and expectations? it might have been better for the Labour government to have under-promised and try to over deliver. At least with Thatcher and Trump, whether we love or despise them, we know where they stand on major issues. For Starmer he seems to have been boxed into corners and has had to appear to be the listening Prime Minister. The problem he will have to deal with going forward, is displaying his political identity so we know who the real Starmer is. Without this, unlike Thatcher, he will be judged as the person who is always for turning.

Home life was harsh, abusive, lonely, anddevoidofaffection. The old song “I’m Nobody’s Child” captured her pain—it became her song. As a teenager, Rose found solace at the St. Francis Mission AnglicanChurchinGlendevon,St. James. There she discovered faith andalovingGod.

TheLayReaderatthechurchgave young people—including Rose— the opportunity to help lead services, and with the support of Sunday school teachers, her growing spirituality was nurtured. She attended Albion All-Age School, then Montego Bay High School, where she sat the GCE exams(withfinancialhelpfromthe Church).Herfirstjobwasasapretrainedteacher.

Yet from a very young age, Rose felt a call to serve as a priest. At this time women were not allowed to be priests in the Episcopal church. However, not to be deterred, she became a Lay EvangelistwiththeChurchArmy.

She was sent by the Church to the UKtotrainwiththeChurchArmy where she met her future husband Ken, who later followed her back toJamaicawheretheymarriedand begantheirlivestogether.

Critics pounced, and the role was split between Rose and another candidate, who was referred to in the press as an “Oxford graduate.” The same source dismissively referring to Rose as “The Girl from Montego Bay”—a jab she transformed into triumph. That very phrase is now the title of her autobiography, being launched in South Florida this August.

Now, The Rt Rev Rose HudsonWilkin, Bishop of Dover, the first Black female bishop in the Church of England (and was also the first black female to be Chaplain to the Late Queen Elizabeth II), will be here in the U.S. for a Book Signing and Speaking Tour in New York and South Florida. Surge in homes for sale at over £1m in Wiltshire

The number of homes valued at over £1 million has surged in Wiltshire, according to a property website.

Rightmove has revealed that around one in every 20 homes for sale in Britain now have a seven-figure price point. This figure has more than doubled in the last six years, with Rightmove recording a 103 per cent increase between January and April 2025, compared with the same period in 2019. Wiltshire is among the counties where the number of huge price tags for properties is growing quickest, according to Rightmove’s research. It ranked sixth in the company’s list of areas with the biggest increase in volume of million-pound properties for sale.

There was a 193 per cent rise in seven-figure properties for sale in Wiltshire, while Cornwall topped the list with a 246 per cent growth. This comes after 2024 data showed house prices for first time buyers in Wiltshire were on the rise.

Colleen Babcock, a property expert at Rightmove, said: “The surge in million-pound homes for sale across Great Britain is substantial.

“Since 2019, we’ve seen the number of million-pound homes for sale double, with over 5% of the market now priced at a million pounds or more. This isn’t just happening in London; places like Cornwall, Uttlesford, and Somerset are also seeing big jumps in the number of high-value properties.”
