Welcome to the first concert series of our 2022-2023 season, during which we look at the theme of Enlightenment in four diverse and thought-provoking programs. We begin with Eclipse, looking at a literal enlightenment of the darkness that we experience literally each time the sun sets, but which for centuries humankind has seen as a metaphor for unease, disquiet, sorrow, and pain. Although the repertoire is sacred in nature, the messages within speak to each of us no ma er our faith or outlook on life, as the experiences we describe are common to all.
Continuing our commitment to commissioning women composers, we are excited to work with Dale Trumbore on a new composition that will become part of our Cosmos program and a future recording project. Some of you will recall our concert program of the same name, presented in 2020, and others will remember that Dale joined us onstage last season as we performed her thought-provoking work, In the middle.
Other new projects this season include our first commercial recording project in more than five years—a Christmas and Holiday program which will be available by Christmas 2023—and an adventurous collaboration with our own chamber orchestra as we present two masterpieces from the Baroque and Contemporary genres, in the surroundings of the Phoenix Art Museum during March 2023. Watch this space for more exciting news on this, soon!
As always, we thank you sincerely for your support of Phoenix Chorale and the choral arts in general, across Phoenix and beyond. We quite simply could not do what we do, without your help—whether it be in purchasing tickets and subscriptions, in sponsoring concerts and new initiatives, giving to our regular fundraising campaigns, or simply telling your friends and family that by a ending a Phoenix Chorale performance they are guaranteeing a sublime musical experience that is upli ing, generous of spirit, and which will resonate within.
Once again, welcome to our new season! We’re glad you’re joining us for the ride.

Tenebrae Factae Sunt – Marc’Antonio Ingegneri (1536-1592)
Tenebrae factae sunt, dum crucifixissent Jesum Judaei: et circa horam nonam exclamavit Jesus voce magna: Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? Et inclinato capite, emisit spiritum. Exclamans Jesus voce magna ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et inclinato capite, emisit spiritum.
Darkness fell when the Jews crucified Jesus: and about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And he bowed his head and gave up the ghost. Jesus cried with a loud voice and said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And he bowed his head and gave up the ghost.

Conversion of Saul – Z Randall Stroope (b.1953)
Caedite, vexate, ligate vinculis! Vinculis, condemnate vexate!
Saul! Murder, harass, bind into chains! Saul! Chain, prosecute and harass!
Why do you persecute me, Saul? Why, why, why?
Fall down on your knees, turn hatred into love. Turn darkness into light. Bow down, Saul! Bow down, Saul! Saul, Saul, Saul.

CHORALE
Composer’s note
“Thomas Tallis’ Te Lucis anter terminum has held me under its spell since I first sang it in my youth. It’s plainsong melody has been a recurring obsession, appearing (usually hidden beneath the surface) in many of my works -- the 3rd String Quartet and the cantata A Time to Dance, for example. So I was particularly excited to be asked to compose a companion piece.
With music based on plainsong, an immediate challenge for the composer is how to pin down the rhythmic flexibility of the chant. Tallis’ triple-time solution is supremely elegant, providing the slow-dancing heartbeat of his se ing. My version, being macaronic, applies different rhythmic treatments to the Latin and vernacular (English or German) texts.
Being an inveterate lover of puns, I couldn’t resist headingthe score with a quotation from the song of Solomon: “Talis est dilectus meus”.
About The Conversion of Saul
“A er the stoning of Stephen, Saul launched an all out persecution of the early Christian church and became legendary in his pursuit to exterminate all who “believed.” But as Saul (also called Paul) later wrote, he was blinded by a light from heaven as he traveled to Damascus and was confronted by a voice that called out to him, saying “Saul why do you persecute me?” This event has become known as “the conversion of Saul,” as Saul turned from his murderous deeds and spent the remainder of his life as a Christian missionary. This musical work The Conversion of Saul begins with a raucous depiction of death and destruction through highly accentuated rhythmic treatment and repeated agitation of the text. A pedal tone emerges in the middle of the piece, symbolizing the “one true light.” This continuum of light brings Saul to his knees, and “commissions” him to a life of “turning hatred into love” and bringing compassion to those around him.”

Phos Hilaron – Owain Park (b.1993) Danielle Hale, mezzo-soprano Lies’l Hill, Christina Hall, Carol Jennings, JJ Rafferty, Toby Kidd, semi-chorus
The gathering of the light The Lord is my light and my salvation: my God shall make my darkness to be bright.
The song of the light Hail, gladdening light, of his pure glory poured Who is the immortal Father, heavenly, blest; Holiest of Holies, Jesus Christ our Lord! Now we are come to the sun’s hour of rest; the lights of evening round us shine, We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit divine! Worthiest art thou at all times to be sung, with undefiled tongue, Son of our God, giver of life, alone: Therefore in all the world thy glories, Lord, they own.
The blessing of the light Come, true light. Come, life eternal. Come, hidden mystery. Come, treasure without name. Come, reality beyond all words. Come, person beyond all understanding. Come, rejoicing without end. Come, light that knows no evening. Come, for my wretched soul has ever longed for you. Come, alone to the alone, for as you see I am alone: you have separated me from all things and made me to be alone upon the earth. Come, for you are yourself the desire that is within me, and you have caused me to long a er you, the wholly inaccessible. Come, unfailing expectation of the saved. Come, raising of the fallen. Come, the resurrection of the dead.
Let my prayer rise before you as incense; the li ing up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. O Lord, I call to you; come to me quickly, hear my voice when I cry to you. But my eyes are turned to you, Lord God; in you I take refuge; do not leave me defenceless.

Komm, Jesu, Komm – J.S. Bach (1685-1750)
Tigran Buniatyan, organ Barbara Metz, cello
Komm, Jesu, komm, mein Leib ist müde. Die Kra verschwind’t je mehr und mehr, ich sehne mich nach deinem Friede; der saure Weg wird mir zu schwer!
Komm, komm, ich will mich dir ergeben.
Come, Jesus, come, my body is weary. My strength fails more and more, I long for your peace; the bi er path becomes too hard.
Come, come, I will yield to You; You are the right path, the truth and the life.
So I give myself into Your hands and say: World, good night!
Just as my life’s course is hurrying towards its end, the spirit is opportunely healthy. It hovers next to its creator, as Jesus is and remains the true way to life.

David Topping, bass
has sung with the Chorale for almost 30 seasons. He has degrees in choral music from California State Fullerton and ASU. He has soloed with the Chorale, Arizona Bach Festival, MusicaNova Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and other ensembles. Christopher Gabbitas - Conductor & Artistic Director
Christopher Gabbitas was appointed Artistic Director of Phoenix Chorale in May 2019, and is delighted and honored to be leading an ensemble with such a rich tradition of spreading t he joy of music through song!
Starting as an 8-year-old boy chorister in England, Chris has been singing ever since in various chapel, cathedral and professional choirs including three years as a choral scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge and a year as a lay clerk at Christ Church, Oxford, as well as directing choral ensembles throughout this time.
His singing career culminated in 15 years spent with The King’s Singers performing around 2,000 concerts across six continents, and making in excess of 50 recordings which were recognized with various awards including two Grammy Awards as a singer/ producer. In 2013 The King’s Singers were inducted into the inaugural Gramophone Hall of Fame.
Also in 2019, Chris was appointed as Artist Professor at the University of Redlands, California, teaching a unique Master of Music in Vocal Chamber Music with a Commercial Music element, which aims to produce professional choral musicians for the next generation. He maintains a busy teaching and per forming schedule across the US.
Outside music, Chris qualified as an a orney in 2003 and maintains a growing legal practice in London, representing clients in the creative commercial sector.
Much though he loves to make music, more than anything Chris enjoys returning home to his wife Stephanie - who hails from the great Commonwealth of Kentucky - and their three girls Bella, Lyra and Ariana, each of whom loves to sing! He also enjoys explaining the rules of cricket, to anybody who will listen.
Tom Peterson - Assistant Conductor & Outreach Coordinator
