I am thrilled to be joining the Phoenix Chorale

Family.

I am thrilled to be joining the Phoenix Chorale family as Artistic Director, and can’t wait to start my first season this coming October. Thank you for your ongoing support of this marvelous organization, which gives our community across Phoenix a voice more beautiful than any other.

There is an almost limitless supply of incredible choral music from the past 600 years, and this season we will begin a journey that will chart a course through some of the very best examples. Timeless classics will sit alongside contemporary works, along with a newly-commissioned piece by our very own Kira Zeeman Rugen. Highlights include Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere and Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning, and we welcome beloved guest conductor, Dr. André J. Thomas, for ‘A Chorale Christmas.’

Our season offers an incredibly rich tapestry of life-affirming and soul-enriching musical experiences. We hope you will join us for one or all of our concerts — I look forward to meeting you all!

ETERNAL LIGHT REFLECTS and illuminates themes of memory and loss of those who have gone before us. Many of us are sustained by the belief that this life is not the end—that we will enjoy eternal rest and eternal light will shine upon us. With this program, we seek to commemorate loved ones lost and admired through song. We begin with a gorgeous arrangement of Lux Aeterna set to Elgar’s “Nimrod,” followed

by Palestrina, Poulenc, and texts

by Walt Whitman. Through poetry of the era, we mark the centenary of the true end of World War I, the 1919 signing of the Treaty of Versailles. And, for the first time in 25 years, we’ll perform Fauré’s Requiem featuring soloists from the Phoenix Boys Choir.

It just isn’t Christmas until you hear us sing! Gathering friends and family together at Christmas is a special joyous time bringing heartwarming memories old and new. You won’t want to miss this pairing of renowned conductor Dr. André J. Thomas leading the Chorale in our festive holiday concerts! Dr. Thomas is in demand around the world as a guest conductor and clinician with previous engagements including the Berlin Radio Choir, Czech National Symphony, and World Youth Choirs in China, the Philippines, and in Europe.

THE WONDROUS NIGHT sky has mystified all mankind since time immemorial. And through the ages this has inspired poets, painters, novelists, and musicians to create unique and exciting works of art. Cosmos takes us on an interstellar journey through cultures both ancient and modern, using musical styles from around the world and drawing varied inspiration from the beauty of the night sky. This program features music by composers Thomas Weelkes, Frank Ticheli, Morten Lauridsen, Kate Rusby, Ola Gjeilo, and more.

into two new Chorale initiatives.

The first is the Chorale’s new Phoenix Masterworks Series, celebrating some of the most timeless and inspiring works for voices, from the Renaissance to the present day. Two masterworks are featured on this program: Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning, for mezzo-soprano solo and chorus, and Allegri’s Miserere, providing themes of creation and new life. The concert also includes the world premiere of our first Phoenix Commissions Project, with a new work reflecting on Phoenix’s namesake bird, symbolizing birth and rebirth, by Phoenix Chorale’s own, composer Kira Zeeman Rugen.
