S
pringtime makes us think of new life and new possibilities. The Earth brings forth new shoots and seeds germinate in time for summer growth and an anticipated harvest, and Christians think of Eastertide. Spring festivals demand music, and composers have willingly provided choral works for generations. Many of these works celebrate the weather, the ground finally thawing and a corresponding spring in our step (pun intended!), and here we present songs, dances and reflections in praise of this exciting time of the year. As part of an exciting commitment to championing the work of female composers and supporting new works, this concert series includes the World Premiere of a new work by Phoenix Chorale soprano Kira Zeeman Rugen, with text reflecting on Phoenix’s namesake bird – perhaps the most enduring symbol of birth and rebirth. Kira sets text written by another woman of Arizona, Phoenix’s inaugural Poet Laureate, Rosemarie Dombrowski. Three other living composers are represented in this program, two of them American and one British. William Hawley approaches the Italian madrigal style in his Io son la Primavera (“I am Spring”), written for San Francisco-based ensemble Chanticleer and displaying luscious chording and soaring legato lines. Connor Koppin is a young, SoCal-based composer whose There Will Come Soft Rains sets text by Sara Teasdale, which contemplates the futility of war amidst the buds of springtime. And British songwriter Laura Mvula is represented with her Sing to the Moon, which speaks to the pain of lost love but the strength we find within ourselves to rebuild and grow once again. We celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams, a composer at the forefront of the so-called Second English Renaissance, by including in our program three of his folksong arrangements. Vaughan Williams, along with Cecil Sharp and Gustav Holst, were champions of this declining art form and it is thanks in large part to their work and research that we have such a rich folksong heritage maintained today. The first in Phoenix Masterworks, a series of concerts celebrating some of the most timeless and inspiring works for voices from the Renaissance to the present day, this concert also showcases American composer Aaron Copland, with his masterpiece In the Beginning, written for Mezzo-Soprano solo and chorus, providing a central theme of creation and new life at the beginning of the second half.

CONDUCTOR & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Christopher Gabbitas was appointed Artistic Director of Phoenix Chorale in May 2019, and is delighted and honored to be leading an ensemble with such a rich tradition of spreading the joy of music through song! Starting as an 8-year-old boy chorister in England, Chris has been singing ever since in various chapel, cathedral and professional choirs including three years as a choral scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge and a year as a lay clerk at Christ Church, Oxford, as well as directing choral ensembles throughout this time. His singing career culminated in 15 years spent with The King’s Singers performing around 2,000 concerts across six continents, and making in excess of 50 recordings which were recognized with various awards including two Grammy Awards as a singer/producer. In 2013 The King’s Singers were inducted into the inaugural Gramophone Hall of Fame.
Much though he loves to make music, more than anything Chris enjoys returning home to his wife Stephanie - who hails from the great Commonwealth of Kentucky - and their three girls Bella, Lyra and Ariana, each of whom loves to sing! He also enjoys explaining the rules of cricket, to anybody who will listen.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR & OUTREACH COORDINATOR Tom Peterson is the music director at Christ Church of the Ascension in Paradise Valley, and ser ved for two years as Artistic Director of the Master Chorale of Flagstaff, where he initiated their Big Sing Flagstaff and Festival of Women Composers. Tom is also a composer, and won the 2019 Stephen Paulus Emerging Composers Competition for his work, Being Many, Seeming One, which was subsequently published by E. C. Schirmer on the Dale Warland Choral Series. Tom is a graduate of Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and the Royal College of Music in London. 2021|22 SEASON

hen they’re not making music with Phoenix Chorale, our talented singers share their craft with the community through various projects, educate the next generation of musicians all while managing to lead interesting personal lives.

In April, DANYA TILLER will travel to New York with a group of 30 handpicked, intergenerational singers 24 from across the countr y to sing in a treble voice chorus performance at Carnegie Hall. The work that will be performed is Andrea Ramsey’s new “Suffrage Cantata,” a multi-movement, multi- media work composed for the 100th anniversar y of women’s suffrage. The piece premiered in re:BIRTH
a masked, outdoor livestreamed concert during the pandemic, but now is finally being performed properly around the countr y. The Valley Vocal Ensemble singers have been training for six months in person and on zoom with Danya, and will be joining a chorus of nearly 200 singers from all over the countr y on Saturday, April 9th to present the piece in its Carnegie Hall debut. The performance will be coached by the composer and led by conductor, Sandra Snow. DAVID TOPPING sang in a multi-faith, multi-choir celebration of the 100 th anniversary of Congregation Beth Israel. The program
featured Psalms, including Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. In March, David will also be heavily involved in the operations of the Arizona Bach Festival, which is returning to inperson events for the first time since March 2020.
TOBY KIDD recently accepted a position as Director of Learning Futures Studios at ASU. He will be leading the development and research of the platforms, architectures, and infrastructure needed
to scale the future of technology and education. Learning Futures is committed to equitable, responsible, and inclusive practices that promote self-determined learning.

COME ON BOARD! The Board of Directors of the Phoenix Chorale is actively seeking new members to help bring the Valley’s “hidden jewel” into a bright new future in the spotlight. Having stewarded the Phoenix Chorale through the challenges of the pandemic, we have our eyes on the future and have begun strategic planning for the ‘after times!’ Our current Board members and staff are filled with energy and purpose for the path ahead and we are looking forward to welcoming new members who want to join us on this exciting ride! The Valley’s population is growing at an incredible rate, and we plan to grow with it. We are also thrilled that the Phoenix Chorale’s relationship with the broader choral community via world-class recordings is due to return next Season. As stewards of this organization, we are privileged to be devoting our energy toward our mission’s purpose, both on behalf of our local stakeholders as well as those on a global scale who appreciate the choral art. The Board of the Phoenix Chorale meets monthly, currently on Saturday mornings, both inperson and virtually as necessary, and we hold full-day or weekend retreats once a year. Every Board member participates in at least one committee [e.g. Diversity, Governance, Development,

Finance]. There are plenty of opportunities to both apply and to build your skill-set in a relaxed and respectful environment. We would particularly be thrilled to hear from Board candidates with diverse backgrounds who have legal, financial, HR, and/or development experience but welcome discussing Board service with anyone who has interest.
