The importance of a library is the intersection and interaction between students, faculty, and services.

Education can take many forms and representations. The goal of a learning environment should be to foster and celebrate discover, curiosity, and intersectionality. Citrus College is oriented east/west and is located south of West Foothill Blvd with northern views of the San Gabriel mountains. The building contains four very distinct volumes that operate differently, three of which are pure geometries and one that is irregular. Much like organs in a body, these volumes look and act very differently, but together they function in tandem. The curvy volume, or the heart, is the main social gathering space. Its playful, enigmatic form, and detached floor plates allow for an informal and flexible environment. The cylinger promotes learning and self-discovery, labeled as the “lungs” of the campus because nothing would survive without it. The rectangular shape is the spine or backbone of the building. Its orthogonal form gives the impression of stability and formality.The square shape stores all the books, similarly to how the brain stores knowledge. This library contains an automatic sotrage and retrieval system (AS/RS) which is able to store122,400 books. Books should be protected and celebrated, so having an AS/RS system promotes this.

SANTA ANA MULTIFAMILY RESIDENCES spring 2023

Located across from the Santa Ana Transportation center, this multi-use residential building is designed around the importance of community. The main circulation is located within the perimeter of the central courtyard.

This creates the idea of a community within a community. The purposeful moves of pushing and pulling the corners off the corridors creates gathering spaces and opportunities for residents and visitors to interact and engage with one another. There is a total of 65 units that span 30 ft from the entry door to the opposite window or balcony. The orientation of each building depends on where the balcony faces the area of most activity The idea of community is further expressed in the facade. On ground level, the commerical spaces and surrounded with storefront windows and are covered by a thin wall of concrete with the intention of creating a large blank canvas. Local artists can paint murals on this wall, much like the works seen in Downtown Santa Ana.

SCIENTIST RETREAT fall 2022

Located on Mt. Wilson, this building serves as a residence and office for scientists. The site is placed on the slope of a hill which challenges the structural support of a cantilevering building. The form of the building begins as a rectangular prism with extended spaces that frame the view towards the mountains. The northern part of the building is rotated to portray a significance in the programmatic dialogue. The structure is supported by a square grid of varying lengths. The residential side has a 11’-8” x 11’-8” grid, and the work side has a 14’-0” x 14’-0” grid. The exterior space serves as a learning space for students and visitors that separates the residential and work spaces. A public entrance is provided at the top of the road while a private entrance for the residents is provided at the bottom of the hill. The first floor is a service space for parking, storage, and mechanical room, the second floor is a collaborative space for work and social, EXTEND THESE SPACES ACCENTUATE THE FRAMING OF THE VIEW and the third floor is reserved for private living. Mt. Wilson was a victim of a wildfire known as the Bobcat fire in September 2020. It burned 115,997 acres of land before it was finally contained in November 27. Fireproofing strategies were observed in the development of this project as well.

In replacement of the CLA building in Cal Poly Pomona, the ENV College of Architecture is proposed to be the new home for architecture students on campus. The main study of this project is the development of the structure and how the facade can be used to define the interior programmatic spaces while also providing lighting strategies. Diagonal louvers were used to enclose the building, and the density of these louvers determine the level of privacy of the spaces inside the building. The service, elevator, and fire egress cores serve as a separation between programmatic spaces. There are little to no walls within the floors that inhabit the studio spaces to give a sense of openness, so these cores become indicators of the separation of studio spaces. The offices and conference rooms placed on the perimeter of the building to maximize natural light entering the building. In addition to the building, the plinth was designed to add additional services to architecture students and provide relief from working in the building.

JAPENESE CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM fall 2021

The Japanese Contemporary Art Museum is located in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. This three story building exhibits the works of Japanese artists Yoshimoto Nara and Chiharu Shiota. In addition to creating experiential spaces between the works of arts and exhibit, the study of light was explored. Skylights were implemented on the roof to allow light to travel to the floors below it. Double height spaces were also created to create a continuous vertical communicated between floor spaces and maximize light entering the building. To emphasize this, a straight long continuous stair connects the first floor to the fourth floor. The spaces made within the floors of the building provides experiential views of the artwork at many different angles. The user experience is thus maximized, making the appreciation of the artwork much more valuable. The building also houses an auditorium space and storage to archived artworks. The facade consists of a curtain wall system that displays a system of grids that is also translated in the concrete panels and expansion joints.

The Site “B” ENV Archives and Library Proposal sits on a slight downwards slope south of Building 7. Its design is intended to respond to Building 7 programmatically and material-wise. Adjacent to the building itself, the western section of this building proposal exhibits similar shadow quality and dark materiality to Building 7 while the rest of the building displays a light and floating quality. The white concrete combined with the layers of glass and columns create a reflective transparency, allowing viewers to see through public spaces and themselves at the same time. The sunken courtyard leads to the main entrance to the library stacks, offering a unique spatial quality of entering into the ground, surrounded by more reflective glass. This courtyard is inspired by the courtyard in Building 7 directly across from it. A courtyard surrounded by glass is inspired by the Universita Luigi Bocconi, which uses this design to allow air to circulate through the building and expansive views from one side to the other. The indoor lecture space is inspired by the auditorium in that university, responding to the downwards slope of the landscape. The modular circulation of this building proposal provides the traveller with a simple path of travel while allowing them to enjoy the spatial experience of traveling through each exciting space.

The exhibition is surrounded with glass walls and includes an outdoor balcony to give the user an inviting experience of seeing through the building prior to entering it. The relationship between the glass curtain walls and the ceilings is influenced by Thomas Phifer’s work, enabling the glass to extend beyond the ceiling instead of below it. The exterior space of the building is capped with a glass roof inspired by the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Los Angeles with the intention of maximizing the sunlight and filtering it through the spaces below it while also allowing the existing trees to have a spatial presence in the design.
