As the Executive Director of the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce, I get the unique opportunity to witness the grit, determination and beauty of our community, firsthand, every single day.
I see it in local business owners, collaboration within the community, and the kindness of neighbors around us. This publication allows me to tell the story of the vibrancy of our community with contributions from local photographers and storytellers, and highlights the things that make Maryville an incredible place to live, work and shop.
My hope is to help you acquaint yourself with the rich experience Maryville has to offer, right here at home.
Maryville is an easy place to call home.
We’re a small community with pride in our strong traditions of education, agriculture and entrepreneurial spirit.
Tucked away in northwest Missouri, we’ve got enough space to not feel crowded, but with easy access to nearby urban centers so we always feel connected.
It’s a place where community is what you make it, and although we’re a small town, we’re a community committed to doing big things.
It’s an exciting time to be in Maryville, as we reshape the look and feel of our community for the future through ambitious new infrastructure projects unparalleled among cities our size, through a downtown revitalization that continues to make us a regional shopping and entertainment destination, through the expansion of tourism drivers like the unique activities available at Mozingo
Lake Recreation Park, and so much more.
But mostly, it’s an exciting time to be in Maryville because of the different ways all sorts of people have decided to make it their home, weaving little pieces of themselves into the fabric of our community — and we’re stronger for it.
As you get to know Maryville a little bit better through the pages of this Viewbook, I’m confident you’ll find there’s no place quite like it.
Whether you’re just browsing, considering a new home or business venture here, or were just drawn in by the cover and found yourself intrigued, I hope you’ll find something about our community that speaks to you.
And if you don’t, it just means there’s even more of a place for a voice like yours here in Maryville.

In Maryville, there’s never a shortage of moments to celebrate together or events to take part in.
Every Spoofhound and Bearcat home game brings with it a wave of green to the streets and flags to yards, along with events like community pep rallies and parades. We love our Spoofhounds and Bearcats! During the spring and summer, Maryville is the place to be as the event season heats up.
In March, line up along Market Street in front of Burny’s Sports Bar & Upper Deck to try and catch a glimpse of the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
You’ll have to squeeze in to make sure you catch it — the parade route is only 80 feet long!
For Easter, hundreds from around the county bring their kids to find the Easter Bunny’s eggs in an annual Easter Egg Hunt held at Donaldson Westside Park. Legend has it that in the 40 years the Easter Bunny has been hiding his eggs at the event, there’s still one that hasn’t been found … .
Chris Burns, parade sponsor and owner of Burny’s Sports Bar & Upper Deck, talks with crowdmembers before the 34th annual World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade held in 2021.
And nothing signals summertime in Maryville quite like the Nodaway County Fair. Attracting thousands from the surrounding areas to the downtown square for the carnival rides, local and national music acts and of course the fried food, the fair — and the accompanying 4-H/FFA livestock show — is classic smalltown community at its best.
Throughout the summer, hundreds take their picnic blankets and lawn chairs to Maryville Parks and Recreation’s Concerts in the Park, bringing in regional bands to play through the sunset as local food vendors set up shop at Donaldson Westside.
For those who want to beat the heat, simmering stage performances are always on order from the Maryville Young Players, a summer theater camp for kids.
Back downtown, the Maryville Public Art Committee hosts the annual Art, Rhythm & Brews festival, providing a taste of area wineries, some sips of local microbrews and live music on the square.
But in Maryville, few holidays are bigger than Halloween. Thousands come from across the region to the Haunted Campground at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park, along with the annual Downtown Trick or Treat, providing safe, fun and spooky environments for kids and families. This year's Haunted Campground saw the most visitors it has ever seen, proving its staying power as one of the region's most popular family-friendly events.
Come winter, more than a hundred individual vendors and businesses pack the Maryville Community Center for the Christmas Craft Fair, organized by Maryville Parks and Recreation.
And speaking of Christmas, Maryville gets all sorts of visitors around that holly jolly time — from Santa Claus to the Grinch! Every Christmas season starts with a parade downtown led by a Grinch, selected by the community in a charity fundraiser. Santa makes his first appearance of the season at the end of the parade in Franklin Park for Maryville Parks and Recreation Winter Wonderland display. And kids will have an opportunity to let Santa know what they want for Christmas each year when he stops by the Maryville Community Center for Breakfast in Whoville!
Each year a few local families open their homes to the public for the annual Christmas Homes Tour which is hosted by Under the Son Ministries. Funds raised are used to support Gethsemane Home in northern Thailand. The Nodaway Chorale holds a Christmas Concert each year in early December and many other holiday events offer fun for families.

MARYVILLE: ‘A SPECIAL PLACE’ TO PLAY
Maryville is known as Titletown for a reason and the Spoofhounds of Maryville High School have contributed a lot to that nickname. Over the years the Spoofhounds have won 11 team state championships across all sports with the most recent being the volleyball
team’s state championship in 2020. The football team has the most state titles with five including four since 2009 and three under Maryville native and head coach Matt Webb. Webb often speaks of the pride he and his team take playing in front of the big crowds at the Hound Pound.
“It’s an unbelievable place, which has an unbelievable record,” Webb said during the 2021 season. “We’ve had an unbelievable success record playing at home. … It is a special place.”
The Spoofhounds have enjoyed plenty of individual successes too with individual state champions in track and field, cross country, wrestling and golf. The most recent individual state champion was sprinter Brooklynn Holt-
man, who won the 200-meter and 400-meter state championships in 2021.
That championship culture extends beyond the high-level to the very active youth and middle-school programs in town.
What Mel Tjeerdsma built for Maryville and Northwest Missouri State University is a winning culture that the community can take pride in.
The Hall of Fame football coach took over a struggling program in 1994 and started his tenure 0-13, but by the time he hung up his whistle in 2010, Tjeerdsma had built one of Division-II’s premier football programs.
Tjeerdsma put three national championship trophies in cases at Northwest and Maryvillenative Adam Dorrell added three more. Longtime Bearcat assistant coach Rich Wright now carries on that winning tradition.
“There is something about being in this little town and being in our stadium and having a home crowd advantage that is just a lot of fun,” Wright said following a game during the 2021 season. “It was a great atmosphere.”
While Tjeerdsma was the founding father of the recent era of Bearcat football, the other sports at Northwest have followed suit in the success and building a passionate fanbase.
Northwest men’s basketball has won twostraight national championships and three of the last four national titles under coach Ben McCollum.
“It’s a great day to be a Bearcat right now, that is for sure,” Northwest men’s basketball star Ryan Hawkins said after the 2021 national championship. “The feeling never gets old.”
Bearcat soccer and volleyball have each experienced their best year ever in 2021 with NCAA Tournament berths. The Bearcat men’s tennis team was a national quarterfinalist in 2020.
Hiba Mahgoub delivered the Northwest women’s track and field team its first-ever outdoor national champion in 2021.
That winning culture extends throughout the Bearcat sports and Maryville.
“It is all those kids, all the managers, all the assistants, all the everything,” McCollum said after the 2021 national title. “That is how you build culture. That is how you build a program.”

FINDING FAITH AND WHERE TO WORSHIP
Maryville and the surrounding areas have a rich history of faith that date back to some of the earliest days of the county in the late 19th century.
Dating back to 1873, Conception Abbey is a Benedictine monastery about 15 miles east of Maryville. More than 8,000 visitors every year pass through the Abbey Guest Center to tour the site and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, which features rare examples of Beuronese murals — painted by the Abbey’s monks themselves in the 1890s.
The Abbey also operates Conception Seminary College, a four-year undergraduate liberal arts institution that looks to prepare young men for seminary.

The Missouri Department of Conservation regulates hunting and fishing. Valid licenses and/or

In 2019, the Sechrest 18 golf course was ranked No. 2 in the state by Golf Advisor, and Golf Digest has called it the “best course to play in the state of Missouri for under $50.”
Indoors, the amenities are just as inviting: a conference and events center welcoming up to 500 people with a stunning, 180-degree view of both golf courses and the lake; William Coy’s Farm-to-Table Restaurant, a gourmet restaurant and catering service whose menu focuses on regionally grown farmto-market fare; and Cobblestone Inn & Suites, a 40-room, business-class hotel adjacent to the event center on the park’s grounds.

LOCAL PARKS AND FACILITIES
In addition to Mozingo, Maryville boasts the most city parks of a town its size in the state, ensuring that activities from organized sports leagues through Maryville Parks & Recreation to just climbing on a jungle gym aren’t much further away than just down the street.
The city handles the upkeep for the only barrier-free playground within city limits located at Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville.
Barrier-free playgrounds are built using special play equipment and walking surfaces that allow children living with a variety of disabilities to play alongside their nondisabled peers.
“With this agreement, Maryville and surrounding communities
have a truly ‘fun for all’ accessible playground for children of all ages and abilities,” said Jeff Stubblefield, Maryville Parks & Recreation director in 2019. “MPR looks forward to a wonderful partnership with Mosaic that will help provide our area with many health benefits.”
The most recent addition to the Maryville park scene is the Thomson Splash 'N' Play. Opened in 2021, Splash
‘N’ Play, named for longtime Maryville residents Dick and Kay Thomson who donated the park to the city, is a free, summertime destination that ensures smiles are rarely in short supply for anyone splashing through the jets and fountains on the splash pad.
At the Maryville Community Center, visitors of all ages take part in wellness classes, work out or just shoot around in the gym.
Members of the Nodaway County Special Olympics team receive medals at the Maryville High School track after a May 1, 2021, competition held in Savannah, Missouri. Local law enforcement officers Rex Riley with the Maryville Police Department, and Val Davenport and Jeremy Staples with the Northwest Missouri State University Police Department presented the medals to very excited competitors. Other sports facilities used by members of the Nodaway County Special Olyumpics team include a Bocce Ball facility at Franklin Park located at Seventh and Main streets and numerous sports facilities at Beal Park, 700 N. Laura St.
Maryville is in a time of transformation, building on a strong foundation of the past to ensure a future that’s brighter than ever.
At our front door and down our busiest retail corridor, South Main Street, we’re in the process of transforming its look and feel through a once-in-a-lifetime project.
In 2018, the South Main Corridor Improvement Project was approved for a $10.5 million federal BUILD grant, allowing the city to expand the most important traffic artery in town into one that’s bigger, safer, and built with an eye toward growth.
The project is emblematic of how our community comes together to solve big problems in special ways — only three other cities in Missouri were approved for the highly competitive BUILD grants in 2018, and in competition with hundreds of other cities across the nation, Maryville’s plan and tenacity stuck out enough to win the grant.

Before they took office, Albert P. Morehouse, governor from 1887-1889, and Forrest C. Donnell, governor from 1941-1945. Their shared good luck charm? They both lived in the same house on Vine Street that still stands today.
Maryville City Council members are leading the city through major updates to South Main Street. From left they are: Rachael Martin, Tye Parsons, Mayor Benjamin Lipiec, John McBride and Dannen Merrill.
Nodaway County Commissioners have worked this year to support local communities by faciliting ARPA funds from the federal government. From left they are: North District Commissioner Chris Burns, Presiding Commissioner Bill Walker and South District Commissioner Scott Walk.
On the corner of Vine and First streets is a new, state-of-the-art public safety facility, named for longtime Maryville Public Safety Director Keith Wood. Taxpayers supported the construction of the building, which houses not only the Maryville Police and Fire departments, but also a consolidated 911 dispatch center that makes Maryville one of the most technologically sophisticated operations for first responder communication and response in the region. When it comes to safety, the Maryville community comes together to spare no expense.
THE FIELDHOUSE HAS 137,000 SQFT
On the campus of Northwest Missouri State University sits Missouri’s largest freestanding structure north of Kansas City: the Carl & Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. The 137,000-square-foot sports and events complex is the product of one of the largest public-private partnerships in the region’s history, a $21 million effort shared among the city of Maryville, Northwest and private donors.
Inside, the Fieldhouse features a 90-yard practice turf, a 300-meter indoor competition track, batting cages, tennis courts, state-of-theart athlete facilities and spectator seating for sporting events. It’s also tailor-made for conventions and other activities, outfitted with three
theater-style classrooms with full A/V hookups, WiFi and an indoor flooring system that allows for seamless conversion.
Throughout the year, the Fieldhouse plays host to practices and games for a number of sports for both Northwest teams and teams from the Maryville R-II School District, along with events like regional tournaments, sports camps and conventions.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic the Fieldhouse has been the site of the quintessential definition of a community partnership as it was utilized for mass vaccination events a threeway partnership between the university, the Nodaway County Health Department and Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville.

BOTTOM
It might not look like it on a map, but nestled in northwest Missouri, Maryville and Nodaway County are at the cutting edge of forwardlooking green power initiatives and implementation of broadband internet.
On the way into town, it’s hard to miss one of the most striking features on the horizon: wind turbines. Nodaway County is currently home to three wind farms, with the potential for more: White Cloud wind farm, a 236MW operation south and west of Maryville; Tenaska Clear Creek Energy Center, a 242MW wind farm north of Maryville; and the Conception Wind Farm, a 50MW facility southeast of Maryville near Conception Junction.
Environmental innovations don’t end there.
Since the early 1980s, Northwest Missouri State University has been recognized nationally for its commitment to alternative fuels.
The university, for example, harvests no trees for fuel utilized by its power plant, instead relying only on wood chips that were previously discarded by the forest products industry as unwanted byproducts
of their manufacturing practices.
Another program pelletizes waste paper products and biomass waste from industrial and agribusiness sources and cleanly uses them as fuel in the university energy system.
Today, Northwest meets 80-85 percent of its energy needs without reliance on petroleumbased fuels, saving millions of dollars and reducing its carbon footprint in the process.
Lettuce Dream, a nonprofit organization, provides innovative career education and community inclusion opportunities for people with disabilities through growing fresh hydroponic produce year-round. The facility grew its first crop of lettuce in 2016, and now has distribution deals with stores and restaurants locally and as far away as Kansas City.
U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, who represents north Missouri, visited Maryville in 2019 for a tour of Bolder Industries. The company recycles tires into more environmentally conscious products like Bolder Black, which is an alternative to virgin carbon black.
Maryville is also home to the main production facility of Bolder Industries, a growing global company that makes the innovative and more environmentally friendly substance Bolder Black to replace carbon black — a compound primarily used to color ink, plastic and paint and as reinforcement in tires and other rubber products. At the Bolder Industries plant in Maryville, scrap tires are recycled into Bolder Black without a drop-off in quality.
The Maryville facility recycles more than two million scrap tires an nually — large enough to recycle and reuse every scrap tire produced in the Kansas City metro area. The plant diverts nearly 50 million pounds of waste from landfills annually, and operates with a positive net energy balance.
The facility recently started an expansion project to update internal processes and create more jobs, thus positioning it and Maryville as a base of operations as the company begins operating worldwide.
Want to download a 4K movie in minutes? Hold a videoconference without dropping out? Or just be able to stream Netflix in more than one room at once? How about all of the above at the same time? That’s the bare minimum every business and household in Maryville has access to through gigabit internet, offered by two providers in city limits — Suddenlink Communications and United Fiber Cooperative.
Recycling supervisor Chris Redden explains to elementary students the process of grinding waste paper into dense pellets that are then burned as an energy source to heat and cool campus buildings at Northwest Missouri State University.t the heart of Maryville’s economy is the steady thrum of industry.
Chances are, if you’ve mowed your lawn with a lawn mower that uses a Kawasaki engine, it was made in Maryville. The city’s largest employer is Kawasaki, whose Maryville plant opened in 1989. Since then, the plant has grown to become the global company’s largest producer of small industrial gasoline engines, and employs more than 1,100 people in its sprawling, 900,000-square-foot facility on the south side of Maryville.
In addition to Kawasaki, Maryville is home to several other manufacturers, including Bolder Industries, DELUXE Corp., Tenneco, J.L. Houston, Laclede Chain Co., Maryville Metal Culverts, Nucor LMP, Preferred Lightning Protection and Robbins Lightning Inc.
Northwest Missouri State University maintains a full-time employment base of around 700, while Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville employs approximately 500 people. At least a half-dozen other employers, including Walmart and Hy-Vee, maintain payrolls of between 200 and 300 employees.
Bolder Industries is an advanced manufacturing facility that gives a second life to scrap tires by turning them into high-performance, environmentally responsible products like BolderBlack.®Bolder Industries • 600 Wilson Industrial Rd • Maryville, MO Phil Braymen shows students from Nodaway-Holt chains made at Laclede Chain in Maryville during a tour as part of Manufacturing Day.
If you want to get to know a small town, check out its downtown — and Maryville’s no different.
Walk around downtown Maryville and you’ll find an eclectic mix of the essential and the never-knew-you-needed. Whether it’s a place to eat, drink, find a souvenir, go shopping, or just to hang out with friends or soon-to-be-friends, downtown Maryville’s got it — and keeps on getting more.
A years-long beautification project continues to transform the look and feel of the downtown area, and businesses have responded by filling every spot on the square from corner to corner.
On one corner, you’ll also find the Downtown Maryville Pocket Park, a collaboration between the Maryville Downtown Improvement Organization and the city that offers an oasis of green.
And throughout the year, celebrations find their home in downtown Maryville, including the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Nodaway County Fair, the annual Christmas parade, the Downtown Trick or Treat, the Art, Rhythm and Brews festival and more.
Maryville is home to a vibrant small business community, made up of passionate local business owners who serve as the lifeblood of Maryville’s downtown.
A weekend hub that draws in visitors from across the region to spend the day downtown, taking in the retail attractions, grabbing a bite to eat and a drink, and staying for an evening’s event.
Downtown Maryville and the surrounding areas offer an comfortable mix of the essential needs, tasty foods and specialized services.
At the center of the Downtown Maryville Pocket Park is a granite, 4,500-pound National Humane Alliance fountain that first sat in Maryville’s downtown in 1911, providing water for horses, dogs and cats. The park is also home to another piece of Nodaway County history, a replica of the Happy Hollow school — a one-room schoolhouse once situated in Pickering in Nodaway County — that includes part of the original building. The shelter house included work done by the building trades class at Northwest Technical School.
The Black Pony brewery is one of the newest additions to the downtown square, and offers fresh recipes on tap and outdoor dining.
Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville serves as a regional hub for health care, providing access to a variety of health needs from emergency care to family doctors and specialty care.
Dozens of physicians and other health care professionals lead a staff of about 500 employees in offering a wide range of wellness, diagnostic and treatment services in a facility that contains more than 80 licensed acutecare beds installed primarily in singleoccupancy rooms.
The hospital and adjoining or nearby clinics house more than
30 practicing medical providers specializing in everything from oncology to cardiac rehabilitation to sports medicine. In addition to winning numerous awards and accolades for quality care, the hospital, along with the entire Mosaic Life Care System, is a member of the prestigious Mayo Clinic Care Network.

Maryville Early Childhood Center, part of the Maryville R-II School District, also provides preschool education for children ages 3-5.
In addition to Eugene Field Elementary School, Maryville youth also have opportunities to attend the St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic School serving preschool through eighth grade. St. Gregory Barbarigo offers comprehensive academic and
technology education complemented by faith development.
And still more elementary students may attend Horace Mann Laboratory School at Northwest Missouri State University, which provides an advanced learning environment for children in preschool through sixth grade while offering on-site training for Northwest education majors.
Northwest Technical School Building
Trades students add finishing touches to the shelter house at the Pocket Park in downtown Maryville. Students are shown from bottom to top: Hunter Carlson, North Nodaway High School; Nate Sparks, Maryville High School; Brayden Buck, Maryville; and Daniel Parman, North Nodaway.
Throughout their learning journey, students in Maryville will have access to the latest learning tools, hands-on environments and be exposed to new ideas and pursuits in exciting ways.
Outside the classroom, Maryville students excel in extracurricular activities through the Marching Spoofhound Band, theater, the Spectrum show choir, a speech and debate team, FFA and many more that frequently earn state recognition for excellence.
Northwest Technical School, located on the same campus as the Maryville High School, serves
students from both Maryville and the surrounding areas, and partners with North Central Missouri College to provide a post-secondary nursing program.
At NTS, high school students take part in practical, hands-on vocational courses in agriculture, auto and collision repair, building trades, business technology, culinary arts, health science technology and welding. NTS also offers an array of adult education programs ranging from subject areas like computers to dance and music to business.
SPOOFY BEANS
Maryville High School students operate
Spoofy Beans, a program that gives students real-world experience in running a coffee business. Students get a chance to become familiar with all aspects of running the business, from marketing, to delivery to actually making the coffee.
Jesus to teach, to love, and to serve”
Maryville High School freshman Bryla Ebrecht, center, performs during a musical preview of the marching band’s halftime show in the high school gym. An incoming freshman, Ebrecht told The Forum that she had been worried about the difficulty of the high school music, but was happy to find it easier than expected.
The Lee and Nina Schneider Center for the Performing Arts, opened in 2016, is a facility dedicated to performing arts on the campus of Maryville High School. The 19,000-square-foot, 700-seat venue is home year-round to choir performances, plays and other community events.
Kort Watkins as “Gaston,” pushes “LaFou” played by Collin Sowards out of the way as he shows off his muscles during a song rehearsal at the Lee and Nina Schneider Center for the Performing Arts.
Northwest Missouri State University, home of the Bearcats, is a four-year, regional state university that is one of the fastest-growing hubs for career-focused higher education in Missouri.
Drawing heavily from Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska in addition to Missouri, enrollment has grown to a record 7,870 in fall 2021.
Gov. Mike Parson talks with Rod Barr, Northwest’s director of the School of Agricultural Sciences, while visiting a classroom in the new Agricultural Learning Center. From left: Northwest President John Jasinski, state Rep. Allen Andrews, Parson and Barr.
Cattle from the Foremost Guernsey herd, a famed herd of cattle housed at the University of Missouri, were donated to Northwest Missouri State University last month. Northwest received 30 Guernsey cows, consisting of heifers and calves across a range of ages with the youngest just three weeks old.
Bolstering enrollment is the largest agriculture business program in the state, home to the newly built Agricultural Learning Center at the university’s R.T. Wright Farm, which offers state-of-the-art facilities for students to take part in unique practical learning experiences.
For nearly 150 years, the Benedictine monastic community of Conception Abbey has been working to provide for the Church’s future in a variety of ways. Our location in northwest Missouri complements the lives of contemplative prayer and reflection led by the monks who live, work and pray here—and replenishes visitors who come for spiritual nourishment and rejuvenation.
It is the Benedictine monastic community who inspires the seminarians who study at Conception Seminary College and will return to their communities as priests formed in the Benedictine tradition. All of the apostolic works at Conception are connected by our shared Benedictine values of hospitality, service, and the promise to welcome every guest as Christ. We minister in faithful service to the Church and to the world.
We invite you to join us for prayer, retreats, and tours.

THE WORLD’S SAFEST.
In early 2020, we challenged our team to make Nucor the safest steel company in the world. Within weeks of that challenge, we were fighting a global pandemic, and the world faced an uncertain future. Yet the team never lost sight of our most important value – the health, safety and well-being of our Nucor family. The result was the safest year in Nucor’s history.
Congratulations and thank you to our more than 26,000 dedicated Nucor teammates. You cared enough to face this challenge head-on and delivered a world-class performance.
