WELCOME TO PHARMASIS MAGAZINE, where the goal is to celebrate women

in pharmacy. These women have determined to define their careers and ultimately leave a legacy while building the lives of which they dream.

I am Dr. Jerrica Dodd, Founder and CEO of Your Pharmacy Advocate, a concierge pharmacist consulting practice that partners with patients and their healthcare providers for safe medication use. In the earlier days of building the consulting practice, I encountered numerous women pharmacists who requested time to chat and ultimately shared their fears, dreams, and pressures they experience in the ever-changing environment of the pharmacy profession. Though not my original plan, a pharmacist coaching business has evolved from these many discussions. I still meet and talk with women pharmacists weekly and now I am able to offer them coaching on “the how” of transitioning in their career to building a life they love. As I turn the page on 1 year of this magazine celebrating women pharmacists, I have to see that I am proud to continue with my mission of encouraging women pharmacists to build their dreams. I must admit that after pharmacy school I stopped dreaming and this seems to be a common practice once student loans, job requirements and life continues to happen. Ultimately, I want women in pharmacy (pharmacists, technicians, students, etc.) to build their dreams!

As our world has experienced some unbelievable changes since the last publication of PharmaSis, I welcome the opportunity to share our featured pharmacists’ thoughts on how the Coronavirus pandemic and world-wide racial injustices have influenced their lives. The year 2020 has been more than we could have imagined, yet a year to finish STRONG like none other.

The year 2020 has brought with it the Coronavirus pandemic, spotlight on the continued racial injustices in the world and the tension and excitement of an upcoming United States presidential election. Much of the world is still making sense of the fallout and the new normal that has impacted us all. In the pharmacy world we begin celebrating yearly in late September with World Pharmacists Day and the celebration continues in October with American Pharmacists Month, Women Pharmacist Day, Pharmacist Week and National Pharmacy Technician Day. To this month of celebration, we add the celebration of PharmaSis Magazine’s anniversary. What started as an idea in my head and heart came to life in my hands with the 1st issue of PharmaSis Magazine in October of 2019. How has racial injustice in the world impacted you?

As a Chinese born Australian, I have been exposed to the harsh realities of racial injustice firsthand.

I came to Australia when I was 15 years old.

Despite learning English in China from primary school. With the different accents and cultural changes, I still found it difficult to express myself and it took me longer to understand and converse with people when I first arrived in Australia. I vividly remember my first week of school. During chemistry class, we were told to find our group and experiment with three different chemicals in test tubes. One girl from the group pushed the test tubes away from me and told me to find another table. Her words were so cruel and cold.

It pierced my heart and shattered my sense of selfworth and identity and in that moment, I felt so very alone and small. I was ashamed of myself, ashamed of my Chinese heritage, ashamed of my inability to speak fluent English. I wanted to hide myself, I wanted to shrink into nothingness, I wanted to disappear. This was the first time I encountered racism and it made me feel like an outcast, unwanted and alone. Despite my early struggles I was able to find a small group of friends. Looking back, I am very grateful for this group of school friends who accepted me for who I was and looked beyond the colour of my skin and sound of my voice.

During my school years I learnt about Australian history and learnt about Indigenous Australians, also known as the First Australians, including hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have lived in Australia for thousands of years. They make up only 3 percent of the country's current 25 million population. During English class, I was introduced to the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence. It tells the story of three Indigenous girls trying to escape after being kidnapped from their homes and families to be trained as domestic staff and set off on a trek across the Australian Outback. In fact, for much of the first half of the twentieth century, Indigenous children in Australia were forcibly removed from

their families as part of a government initiative to conform them to Western values and as a result hasten the disappearance of Indigenous traditions and values. These children, who were taught to reject their own cultural traditions, were often placed in state-run institutions rife with abuse.

According to a decade-long joint study recently published by Harvard, Yale and the University of Sydney there is still a great disparity in treatment and views toward Indigenous Australians. As healthcare professionals, we have a duty to care for everyone in the community regardless of their age, gender, race and upbringing.

However, I have seen firsthand the racial prejudice that still exists in our community. The look of disapproval when a young girl of colour asks for the emergency contraceptive pill. The contempt shown when someone who can't speak fluent English requests medications.

Especially during COVID-19, Asian-Australians have been physically harassed, threatened with weapons, spat at and told they can’t enter the premises because “Asians need to stay indoors”.

According to a recent survey, “Asian-Australian women were overwhelmingly the most frequent victims (65% of respondents), 40% of racist incidents reported on a public street, and almost 60% of incidents involving physical or verbal harassment”. It is extremely saddening and concurrently an outrage in our supposedly multicultural country to see such unjust and callous behaviours displayed towards another human when all of us are hurting from the pandemic.

Instead of looking for individuals to direct our blame it is so important to show understanding and compassion. To provide encouragement, care for one another and support each other during this unprecedented time.

Despite my struggles with racism I am thankful for my journey. Through my personal experiences as a Chinese born Australian pharmacist, I am able to empathise and support my clients through their journey of healing. As human beings we are all interconnected emotionally and spiritually.

My personal struggles and childhood experiences have broadened my understanding and respect for different cultures, traditions and social values.

I hope to be an advocate for understanding and a champion fighting against racial inequality and prejudice.

HOFFMANN-EUBANKS Banner of Excellence Tell your story…how did you get here?

Describe what you are building/have built.

My story begins as a little girl who was encouraged and supported by two amazing women- my mother and grandmother! Both of these women have helped mold me and gave me the grit and fortitude required to go after what I want.

I started Banner Medical LLC, unofficially five years ago in 2015 as a “side-hustle” while working full-time in community pharmacy. It started as a way for me to make some extra money to help pay off my student loans and support my love for traveling. I began as a freelance medical writer and discovered that there was a considerable need for medical professionals who not only had a background in medicine but could write well and tell the story required for the requested content. Anyone can throw words down on paper, but writing great content is a choice! So, I built Banner Medical on the premise of high-quality content where the “first draft is the last draft”.

Today, I have a multi-six figure business with a fantastic team of expert pharmacist writers. We take care of a variety of clients that need help with continuing medical education, educational needs assessments, blog writing, NAPLEX test prep, manuscript preparation, and more. I also developed the first course specifically designed for pharmacists, called Medical Writing Mastery, to help them go beyond the traditional pharmacy boxes

My mom was a single mom and worked extremely hard to take care of us. Fortunately, since my grandparents lived close by, I spent most of my time with them while my mom was at work. It was amazing! My grandmother was a librarian and teacher and the cultivator of my reading and writing skills. I can still remember the very first time she let me type on her typewriter (yep, they were still a thing when I was little!). In fact, it was my very first opportunity to tell a story, which is now a fundamental part of my medical communications business.

Ironically, what I remember and appreciate the most, was the sense of equality and dignity that these two women expected and created. My grandmother was born in a time where women mostly stayed home and took care of the family. Neither her nor my mom fits that mold – and neither would I. Instead, I grew up with stories of Pippi Longstocking, where little girls are financially independent, can sail the seven seas, and be both cheeky and kind. I grew up determined that I would create my own way, and I feel so grateful for their strong influence as it has given me the confidence for my current role as the Founder and CEO of a successful medical communications company!

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

My transition from freelance medical writer to Chief Executive Officer has been a journey and a completely different mindset. Hiring pharmacists and creating additional revenue streams for them was something I never anticipated when I created Banner Medical, but it has been one of the most gratifying parts of owning my own business.

What is/was your biggest fear, and how did you face it?

In the early stages of Banner Medical, I got to the point where I knew I was the rate-limiting step. I was maxed out. I was working full-time, and I was at capacity for the amount of work I physically could complete and was having to turn work down. I was at a crossroads; I was either going to scale back and only take projects I wanted to work on, or I would have to hire a writer and go for it. Hiring someone was not the hard part; it was the fear of how I would teach someone to replicate the values of Banner Medical and care about the business as much as I do.

So, like most pharmacists, I started researching and looking for the best way to overcome barriers in business.

I remember it like it was yesterday, it was 2 am, and I couldn’t sleep. I stumbled across an article that proposed the idea of a business coach – a concept that was foreign to me at the time. I remember thinking it sounded a little strange, and “do people really hire business coaches?” But, as I thought more about it, I realized that we have coaches for many other things in our lives, and why should a business be any different? It was 2:15 am, and I scheduled the free appointment! It was the first time in a long time that I decided to bet on myself and my capabilities.

Hiring a business coach was one of the best decisions I have ever made – my only regret is not doing it sooner.

I tripled my income in six months (yep, that’s not a typo. I made three times the amount of money I had made for the full year previous in the first six months of coaching!). I moved past my fears associated with hiring and maintaining the quality in my business and instead ended up creating a system that is now the basis for my medical writing course.

What is your response to failure?

I think failure is an integral part of the growth process.

You can look at anyone really successful, and I guarantee this person has at least one story where something did not work out. Growing up, I think it is easy to assume that successful people have this very linear growth curve, when, in reality, it is much more of a zig-zag on the way up. To this day, when I experience challenging times, or things don’t go the way I anticipated, my husband loves to remind me that “if it were easy, everyone would do it”.

I’ll admit, that usually annoys me at the moment, but it almost always lights a fire inside of me to persevere. I also think it’s important to have self-awareness during times of failure as well. There usually are real reasons that failure occurred, and understanding what contributed to that experience is essential so you can address any deficiencies and learn from the experience, and then move on.

CHANGE: We have and continue to experience change as a world, nation, profession, pharmacist, entrepreneur as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic and racial injustices in 2020. How have these changes affected you personally and/or as a professional?

The last six months have been some of the most challenging I have ever experienced in my eight years of practicing pharmacy. Navigating a pandemic as a community pharmacist has had its difficulties, but what has stuck out to me the most is the resilience of my pharmacy team despite them. We have been through so much in this short period - medication hoarding, drug shortages, pharmacy closures, loss of valued patients, and so much more. I am proud of every member of my pharmacy team for their dedication to our pharmacy and our patients.

This time has also reinforced the dire need to address health disparities and racial inequities. My practice site is located on the far South Side of Chicago in an underserved community. The COVID-19 virus peaked in Illinois during April, and there were individuals in our community who were being talked out of going to the hospital who had legitimate non-COVID medical issues by emergency services. I will never forget the recount of an individual who almost died from undiagnosed type 1 diabetes because of COVID. This kind of scenario was unthinkable – how could that possibly be occurring in 2020? But it was, and worse, it was happening all across our country in unconscionable numbers!

We have to do better! I think our curriculums in all of our health professions need to be revised and have a strong emphasis on addressing the health disparities occurring within our country. As practitioners, we have to recognize our own biases, educate ourselves, and take an active role in changing the system. Part of the Oath of most healthcare professionals is the promise to do no harm, respect of the sacred trust given to us by the public, and to recognize our responsibility we have to our patients. Therefore, it is essential that we fight every day to ensure the elements of the Oath are protected and swiftly improved upon when we fail to measure up!

What does it mean to lead yourself/your own company?

Leading my own company means I am building my dreams.

I get to wake up every day and focus my time and energy on work that is meaningful and sparks joy! My entrepreneurial role does not feel like work to me, and, as a result, hours go by without my noticing. I get to operate in a space where I feel like I am truly making a difference and leveraging my background and skills to the best of my ability. It feels like freedom!

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role?

I think this is another area where self-awareness becomes incredibly important. I would encourage any woman who is unhappy to dig deep and consider why or what is making them unhappy. Is it possible to improve the situation? If not, are they prepared to make a change? Too often, we focus on telling people how to be more resilient and emphasize that our unhappiness is our own making.

What’s next for you and/or your business?

Shame cuts deep into the crux of who we are and is linked to our self-esteem, personal identity, and even feelings of emotional well-being. Unfortunately, for some, it can become this endless repetitive cycle of fear-failure-shame.

I am so excited for the future! I am a maximizer, which means I am always searching for ways to improve the process. So, I am working on several new services and will be focusing my energies on disrupting the process of medical communications and continuing to grow Banner Medical.

Therefore, I think any woman experiencing fear needs to be reminded that their skills are valuable! WOMEN IN PHARMACY:

from Homemaker to Healthcare Provider Brittany Hoffmann-Eubanks, PharmD, MBA

T

he role of women has evolved significantly from the early beginnings of America. The experiences of women within the U.S. have varied substantially depending on ethnicity, race, marital status, religion, geographic location, and period. Participation in the workforce outside of the home was no exception, as many women were expected to stay home and take care of the family as their primary job.



Mary Corrinna Putnam Jacobi was the first woman to graduate from a college of pharmacy in 1863, later becoming a physician and pioneering the specialty of pediatrics.

 Ella Nora Phillips Stewart became the first licensed African-American female pharmacist in the U.S. in 1916, and the first African-American woman to earn a pharmacy degree.

The profession of pharmacy was also male-dominated in the early beginnings of the U.S. and would not shift  Mary Munson Runge became the first woman and until the late 20th century. Despite these challenges, first African American woman to become president women have persevered, pushed forward, and broken of the American Pharmacists Association in 1979 ceilings: Fast forward to 2020, and women now represent the  Elizabeth Gooking Greenleaf is recognized as the majority of pharmacy graduates (about two-thirds). first female pharmacist within America as an owner Women have transcended their in-the-home roles and become valued members of the workforce and of an apothecary with her husband in 1727. respected healthcare providers.

More work is yet to be done, as significant gender gaps still exist within the profession of pharmacy. While women have risen to the ranks of midlevel managers, their representation in upper-management and C-suite severely lacks, especially among women of color.

The bravery and courage of the pioneering women in pharmacy serve as a reminder of how far we have come and the future ceilings that still must be broken.

CHINESE MEDICINE PHARMACIST

Dr. Allie Xu

Ancient Traditions : Chinese Medicine in Pharmacy Tell your story…

I was born and raised in a fourth-generation medical family in Shanghai, China, and moved to Australia when I was 15 years old. My great-grandfather was a Traditional Chinese Medicine Specialist and one of the founders of Traditional Chinese Medicine tertiary teaching hospitals in Shanghai. Grandfather and grand uncle completed a PhD and postdoc in Western Medicine becoming a physician, professor of medicine and surgeon respectfully. While my uncles and aunties are all Western Medicine specialists, my father studied Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Western Medicine. Growing up I learned which seasonal vegetables to consume, which acupressure points to press when I experienced pain and what temperature water to drink at what time. The foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine stems from the principle that mental and physical well-being are intricately intertwined.

I chose pharmacy because I don’t like the night shifts at hospitals but still want to provide health education and care as well as looking after my family. Pharmacists are medication experts, but we do much more than just dispense medications. We are in the perfect position to integrate, change, advocate and support people in the community. We are in the best position to liaise with medical doctors, as well as integrating with holistic health professionals in the community.

internship. 2 years ago, I arrived at a crossroads in my life. Physically I was unwell and eventually diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Mentally I was drained due to sadness and frustration in my workplace; I was overworked and tired. I felt stuck and unable to learn or develop. I was brimming with ideas that did not come to fruition due to the existing financial structure and key performance indicators of the business. My freedom to experiment and validate ideas never eventuated. I wanted to learn and be inspired by successful pharmacy entrepreneurs and in turn wanted to assist others in seeing the possibilities and opportunities which lay beyond the traditional roles within the community, hospital and pharmaceutical industry. Concurrently my wedding preparation and my Grandma’s neardeath experience was extremely difficult for me emotionally, mentally and physically.

I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue, and unable to get out of bed, depressed and lost. I started spending time and money on my selfdiscovery and healing journey. I hired coaches to help me with my emotional intelligence as well as overcome my childhood trauma and emotional barriers. I have learned that our body stores negative emotions like toxins over time. We need to release negative emotions on a daily basis. Just like going to the toilet, we must go every day. We receive negative energy and emotions from the external environment such as COVID deaths rates on the news and criticism from others, or internal negativity such as our negative self-talk and limiting beliefs. All of these need to be cleared on a regular basis. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective excess emotional activity causes severe yin yang energy imbalances which leads to Qi blockages in the meridians and impairment of vital organ functions.

Describe what you are building My business is called the Chinese Medicine Pharmacist. I use my holistic health coaching methods, Chinese Medicine philosophies and theories, different holistic health modalities and pharmacist knowledge to help the general public to solve medication related problems as well as offering wellness programs online and offline. In Ancient China, a doctor would travel from village to village treating people.

He or she always carried a big bag of herbs and acupuncture needles. His or her dream was that one day he or she would be able to hang up that bag forever because there would be no more people to treat. Everybody would have been cured. Growing up watching my great grandfather and my father living, breathing using Traditional Chinese Medicine I have realised the importance of adopting a holistic approach. I want my clients to enjoy a long life, free from disease and problems associated with old age. I wish to empower my clients to take control of their health. And encourage them not to wait until it is too late.

I want to encourage my clients to look after their body to prevent development of diseases and ultimately value their life—it’s the most precious thing we all have.

What’s been the biggest surprise about your journey?

Fear is foreseeing a negative potential as an outcome. Try to see the possibility of a positive outcome from your actions instead.

My journey to becoming a Pharmacist and an Entrepreneur started long before I could fully grasp what it meant and how it will help me discover my true purpose. Two things were certain in my community growing up, Pharmacists were revered healthcare providers, and they were successful business leaders. That was all my parents needed to know in deciding what my future career would be before I could complete elementary school.

Playing my part in this carefully orchestrated version of my life, turned out not to be as easy as planned. Academic success was the least of my problems, leading to opportunities to attend the best schools including the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. However, I have always felt a need to challenge norms and being a rebel came natural to me. I asked too many uncomfortable questions. Secondly, my parents did everything in their power to make sure I had access to resources and the right education needed to be successful. In my mind, questioning or rejecting their decision would be considered a sign of weakness, elucidating feelings of disappointment. I struggled for years without an outlet to use my voice constructively. I created this narrative something was wrong with me and the best way to survive was silence and invincibility. My only chance at achieving success and earning community respect. No one was ever going to call me weak and failure at any task was not an option. I stopped asking questions and just worked hard from one task to the next.

Also, I developed a view of going after challenges alone which served me well throughout college, but proved disastrous when I was offered the role of pharmacy manager at a chain drugstore. My “go at things alone” attitude meant I did not invest in the growth of my team members, building alliances, or being part of peer groups that allowed you to lean in when needed. I was increasingly frustrated at work trying to meet the needs of the customers who wanted more of my time and trying to meet the financial obligations of the business which required I dispensed as many prescriptions as humanly possible per day. It should not come as a surprise that I failed spectacularly as a pharmacy manager. I lost my team, became ineffective and nobody really cared. I had to deal with the fact that for 25

the first time in my life, I failed.

Describe what you are building.

As years went by as a community pharmacist, I became restless at my inability to truly make a difference in the lives of my customers. I would listen to customer’s share their challenges managing their health and a disturbing theme began to emerge. They were not getting what they needed to truly improve their health. They were demanding care that went beyond dispensing and a few minutes at the counseling station. They wanted their Pharmacist playing a more visible and active role in their care. To make matters worse, I began to feel like I had become part of the problem and not the solution. I was an active participant in a system that had a pill for everything and developed creative operational tools for getting the pill to the customer.

I am a serial entrepreneur at this stage in my life and my latest adventure started out as a resource to meet the needs of our patrons with diabetes at our family owned pharmacy located in a District of Columbia (DC). We served primarily low- to-modest income families. Many of the pharmacy’s patrons live with chronic health conditions, especially diabetes. They were tired by being defined by their health condition. They wanted access to information and support to help them improve their overall health and thrive in their own community.

Searching for resources and programs with which to link patients, I realized there was none available in the wider community that combined education, medication therapy management, support tailored to meet the needs of individuals.

After 8 years with the chain drugstore, I was exhausted, and had nothing more to lose at this point in my career.

The tools that had served me well were failing and I was tired trying to be what everyone expected of me. I could no longer continue to ignore that voice telling me to stop hiding and to start asking questions again. I needed to start working on the things that brought me joy and purpose in my life. It was time to make a change.

I took a leap of faith in 2010, and together with my husband started a family owned pharmacy in Washington DC. Not exactly the Pharmacy my parents envisioned but one that allow me to do things my way.

Being a pharmacist now has new meaning for me. I get to leverage my expertise to provide education and support that goes beyond medication to improve the health of my customers.

Fast forward 10 years later, I am also the founder and CEO of Flexcare Health Solutions, a health and wellness company. I have learned to stop apologizing for who I am. Embracing my authentic self has made me a better educator, leader and mentor. Having gone through this transformation and working every day to be a better version makes me more understanding of the struggles of people living with chronic illnesses and the behavioral changes that they have to make to improve their health.

I have the opportunity every day to work with a diverse group of stakeholders on developing solutions and shape policies that addresses gaps in the delivery of care for people living with multiple chronic illnesses. This also includes providing training to allied healthcare professionals. My network is growing, and I continue to build alliances to advance the role of pharmacists in the management and prevention of chronic illnesses.

Finally, as a Mother to two amazing boys (10 and 4), every day is a balancing act. Having a supportive partner in my husband has made all the difference. For my boys, I hope they learn from my failures and successes to never give up on their dreams.

I decided to offer our own program for people living with diabetes that helped to bridge the gaps in care between intermittent visits with a health care provider and their daily challenges with medications, exercise, stress, and other lifestyle issues. Our success at improving clinical outcomes, resulted in the program being nationally accredited. It also became the first program of its kind to be offered in a community pharmacy setting in Washington, DC. Realizing that providing these education and support services programs for chronic health conditions at the pharmacy limited the ability to reach and impact a significant number of the affected populations, I decided to create Flexcare Health Solutions in 2017—a health and wellness company. FHS has led multiple pilot studies such as incorporating remote patient monitoring in the care of patients with diabetes and exploring the role of peer support groups in the management of chronic illnesses to name a few. Our success in delivering favorable outcomes has made us a reliable partner in DC. We have secured contracts to provide patient education, training and support to healthcare providers in Washington DC. We are building on our foundation of trust and proven achievements to expand our reach beyond DC. What has been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

My biggest surprise has been discovering the infinite possibilities available in our profession for pharmacists who allow themselves to dream big.

What is your biggest fear and how do you face it?

My biggest fear is still failure. Fear of failing continues to hamper my ability to show up and scale the business.

What is your response to failure?

Pick yourself up, learn from the experience and try again. Never stay down, failure is part of the journey to greatness.

CHANGE: In 2020, we have and continue to experience change as a world, nation, profession, and entrepreneurs because of the Coronavirus Pandemic and racial injustices in 2020. How have these changes affected you personally and/or as a professional?

The Covid-19 pandemic exposed a lot of health inequalities in minority populations that we knew existed for a long time. The devastating death toll combined with racial inequalities has presented opportunities for health organizations to reexamine their commitment to providing affordable and quality care for all their members. This is an opportunity for my organization to demonstrate our capabilities and leverage our expertise to make a difference in the communities we serve.

What does it mean to lead yourself/your own 28 company?

Leading my own company has been an empowering and humbling experience so far. Going to work every day knowing I’m doing what I love and truly living my purpose is empowering. I’m in control of what I choose to do with my time. I get to focus my efforts on the things that are important to me.

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role?

They have already taken a very important step in the right direction which is acknowledging their feelings about their current situation. My unhappiness with my job and the constant feeling that care for patients with chronic illness should go beyond medications led me to make a change. The next step will be to go through the process of identifying what will make them happy professionally and personally. Writing it down helps, go

through the process of creating a plan with realistic goals that gets them their desired outcome.

What would you say to a woman who fears stepping out in faith?

Acknowledge that fear, create a plan and get the skill sets you need to succeed. Surround yourself with role models/ peers and or a professional coach who are understanding your struggles. This investment will pay off and get you that extra boost needed to take that leap of faith.

What would you say to a woman in pharmacy who can’t figure out “the how” to do what she dreams of doing?

My advice is to take a step back and make sure you have a very clear idea of what you want to do. The hardest part for me was putting down on paper what I wanted to do and why. Once that became clear to me, it was easier for me to begin to put together the pieces needed to achieve my dream. You don’t have to know it all, but invest in acquiring the skills needed or outsource it if it makes financial sense.

To whom or what do you give credit for your success?

I was blessed to have parents who believed in me. Also, I had access to the best educational institutions in the US. I have to give credit to my mentor Dr. Earl Ettienne who believed in me and invest in my career growth. I continue to surround myself with like-minded business entrepreneurs for support and inspiration.

What’s next for you and/or your business?

Working on a growth strategy to scale our proven model of care to communities beyond the DC metropolitan area.

Finally, as the proud daughter of parents who made it possible for their daughter to succeed despite outcry from family and friends, I strongly believe in investing in the female child. Our FHS mentorship program provides a variety of opportunities for female pharmacy students to see themselves in leadership roles. We are exploring avenues to work with students from other healthcare fields interested in a multidisciplinary approach to community education, training and support.

In 2003 I started Pharmacy School at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

After graduating, I began my career as a clinical Pharmacist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 2014, I became the first and only Non-traditional Pharmacy resident at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

In 2016, I embarked on a remarkable journey at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital as Lead Pharmacist for the Main Pharmacy, and May of 2020, I officially became a Clinical Pharmacy Manager for the enterprise, overseeing the Specialty Pharmacy in addition to special projects.

In 2019 I set out to learn from the women who looked like me, had similar experiences, and more importantly, had the courage to speak about it, and founded Black Women Pharmacists.

STYLED for SUCCESS Written by Elle Renée

Whether you became a pharmacist 20 years ago or 12 months ago, I think you would agree that the profession of pharmacy looks different. Not only have the roles, requirements and responsibilities for pharmacists evolved, but so has the freedom to infuse one's personal fashion and style into our profession.

Pharmacists are not only found wearing crisp, clean white coats while working in grocery stores, hospitals, neighborhood pharmacies, doctors' offices, supercenters, clinics or laboratories, but they can also be found dressed fashionably and stylish in courtrooms, boardrooms, classrooms, speaking on main stages and even on laptops and mobile devices - teaching, coaching and consulting virtually. It's safe to say that the infamous white coat has some competition.

We know pharmacists are expected to follow laws, policies and rules, but when it comes to fashion, these rules have evolved too. From interviewing for a new pharmacist position, pitching an idea in the boardroom or consulting with a client, to making a stylish statement underneath your white coat, dressing for success, accentuates your confidence and style.

Here are 3 ways the woman pharmacist can dress for success with style:

ONE

Suit up for success.

Even with our profession evolving, the opportunity to only make one great first impression, has not. Having a suit that can be worn in any season is an investment worth making. Whether you choose a pantsuit or a skirt suit, be sure the color is neutral. When the occasion welcomes fashion freedom, you can always define your look by adding accessories and pops of color using scarves, broaches, tops or belts.

Pop your collar.

Believe it or not, necklines can flatter or shatter your look, and unfortunately send a confusing message. Rule of thumb – the bigger your bust, the lower the neckline (not too low of course). Because wearing v-neck tops makes the eye move downward and the bust appear smaller, is why wearing this type of neckline is so popular and complimentary on most body types. If you happen to be concerned about the plunging neckline or sending the wrong message, just add a cami (same or contrasting color). Wearing a cami will help you relax, knowing you are not showing too much cleavage. Other necklines like round, scoop, square, boat-neck, or keyhole can also be worn, but make sure your bra straps are not showing. For the woman pharmacist who wears the white coat, try blouses that tie around the neck or collared style tops to add a layer to your look. As a bonus, it makes it easy to transition from work to play when you want to pop your collar and celebrate being you.

Sole Statement.

Shoes can tell a lot about a woman's style. The days of wearing drably, boring shoes are over. From heels, pumps, flats, clogs, loafers, wedges, to kitten heels, boots and booties, they all come in great colors, heights and patterns. You can dress for success while being stylish and making a sole statement. Just like a classic suit, invest in a quality pair of neutral colored pointed-toe shoes.

Pointed-toe shoes help you look taller and leaner.

Now that you have a few tips on being a stylish woman pharmacist, it is a great time to start building a wardrobe with pieces that not only reflect your style and where you are in your career, but where you aspire to be and how you want to look. I was born and raised in Yerevan, Armenia. With hopes for more opportunities and for a better life, my family migrated to the United States when I was 16 years old.

Acclimating to a new country as a teenager was not a positive experience for so many reasons. I missed my life, my friends and my home country! I struggled with adjusting to the societal norms of a foreign place where I had no roots. I was terrified because I spoke very little English. I struggled with making friends and interacting with others. I felt lost and out of place. I turned to food for comfort and before I knew it, I was overweight and my self-esteem was at its lowest. Being overweight as a teenager caused me to miss out on so many social activities and missed opportunities. I felt ashamed of myself and constantly felt judged by others because of my physical appearance. As I got older, my habits didn’t change. I was addicted to sugar, carbs and caffeine!

My life changed completely when I met the love of my life and husband with whom I have two amazing children. I was the happiest I had ever been in my life as a newlywed and especially when I became a mother. But, my back to back pregnancies caused more weight gain and my health spiraled out of control. As a new mother, I was focused on my family, work and others. Forgetting about self-love and self-care. I became morbidly obese and saw my health declining. I had no energy and I was unable to be fully present with my kids.

I’ll never forget the day when I had my annual physical and my doctor informed me that if I didn’t change my lifestyle, I was highly likely to have a heart attack by the age of 40. I was stunned hearing those words. I knew I had to make changes. But I had no clue where to start.

I was overwhelmed and terrified of the thought of not being around to watch my children grow!

After many years of poor eating and yo-yo dieting, I finally learned the connection between a healthy lifestyle and feeling strong and confident.

In 2015, on Mother’s Day, I learned about holistic health and functional medicine by partnering with health and wellness company Isagenix. Instead of trying “quick fix” diets, I began focusing more on the root cause of my failing health. Over 100 pounds shed and a boost of selfconfidence allowed me to step out on stage as a fitness competitor. I did my first natural bodybuilding show at the age of 37. Three years later, at age 40, I did not have a heart attack. Instead, I ran my first marathon in Los Angeles and became a Strong Nation fitness instructor!

This transformation inspired me to create B.E.A.C.H. Inc. or Build Empire and Change Health Inc. The idea came to me when I celebrated my 35th birthday in the Bahamas. It was also the beginning of my new lifestyle.

I was walking along the beach with my husband and I told him I was going to start a tribe. A tribe for inspiring, boosting self-confidence and transforming lives! A tribe that facilitated others to experience freedom from unhealthy living and financial binds.

I’m passionate about introducing an alternative way for people to accomplish their health goals; without pharmaceuticals! Best of all, I can teach you all about getting ahead of financial setbacks. My journey has empowered me to improve my life and I want to pass my knowledge and experience to help others transform their lives!

Describe your business

I learned to turn my mess into my message. When I have a messy situation (i.e. failure) I spend time reflecting what happened and what have I learned from this experience and how I am going to improve the next time. I celebrate all my failures and I always find something positive from any experience.

As a successful health coach and entrepreneur with Isagenix, I quickly realized I have gained many skills to have my own virtual Functional Medicine Practice. May 11 2020, during global pandemic, I launched my virtual practice and have been seeing clients since then. As a mom, I was juggling between my full time position at the hospital, my virtual practice and Isagenix e-commerce business. I realized my family was getting my leftovers as I was working so much and I was barely home.

Thanks to the pandemic and homeschooling, I recently made a decision to end my career in the hospital and focus being a full time mom and entrepreneur, working from home while providing for my family. Few days before my 40th birthday on September 1st, I became a corporate dropout and now I have the opportunity to work from home and be my own boss. Since retiring my corporate job, I have expanded my services and now focus on teaching other pharmacist how to become Functional Medicine Entrepreneurs. My goal is to help 10 pharmacist moms to become corporate dropouts in 2021. I am committed bringing 10 moms home as a full time mom and entrepreneur.

CHANGE: We have and continue to experience change as a world, nation, profession, pharmacist, entrepreneur as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic and racial injustices in 2020. How have these changes affected you personally and/or as a professional?

Due to the global pandemic I realized how much I was missing out as a mom. I missed out on their first steps, their first words, first of many events since I was always at work. I missed out on many award ceremonies, first field trips and sports practices. My oldest is turning 10 years old, and because of the pandemic I saw this as an opportunity not to spend any more time missing out on anything. I’ve been a part time mom for a decade, and that’s about to change. No more on missing out and no more on relying on someone else taking care of my kids. I realized what I was missing and how much it hurt when I was only spending 2 hrs a day with the kids, living such a stressful life on autopilot. Pandemic made me and my family to slow down, evaluate what’s important and how we get to spend the time together as a family. Because of the pandemic, my kids now call their grandparents every day, visit them more often, learned how to cook, clean the house, and appreciate every little thing that we were taking for granted. If it wasn’t for the pandemic, I would not have looked into other options for my professional career and I would not have had an opportunity to go back to online school to learn more about Functional Medicine and pursue a certification.

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

I realized that working from home has its ups and downs.

I am not spending 2 hrs in my car commuting back and forth, however I am spending more time doing things around the house that may not be a priority at that time.

I have learned that I had to schedule every single activity during the day, otherwise my days go by so quickly and I am not finishing all my tasks. Getting organized and finding a new routine has been the biggest challenge so far, but I am loving the time freedom and flexibility that I have gained as a result. Being home has also allowed me to dream big and start projects that I was putting off for a long time.

During the pandemic, I also realized how much I was taking for granted as a "white female". I had a huge shift of awareness about recognizing racial injustice.

We spent time at home talking and educating the kids about what's going on and why are people protesting.

Learning from my teammates who have experienced racial injustice was also an eye-opening experience. I realized how much I didn't know and how much I was taking for granted.

What was your biggest fear and how did you face it?

One of my biggest fears was when I started training for my first bodybuilding show and then later on started training for marathon. I have never been an athlete and for me to take on these huge goals was very scary.

I was afraid how I was going to finish my goal, will I actually step on stage and will I actually cross the finish line. I was afraid how this will interfere with my family schedule since I had to be away from home training for hours a day 5 days a week. As scary as it was, I realized I had to spend time on personal development and spend time on my mindset. I faced my fears by investing in several coaching events and my latest favorite event Unleash The Power Within by Tony Robbins. Focusing on my mindset helped me become unstoppable and finish my goals like a real life Wonder-Woman.

What does it mean to lead yourself/your own company?

As a leader in my network marketing company, I learned how to be a better listener so I can serve others.

Sometimes as a leader we don’t spend enough time listening to our team because we are so focused on the next big goal, however as a leader I learned how to slow down, ask questions and get to the true WHY my customers want. As a leader I learned that it’s ok to be messy and go first and figure out as I go, I use my experience to help and empower others to reach their goals. Last year on 8/13/2019 I wrote a note to myself, I wrote down my vision and passion that I wanted to accomplish and celebrate. I manifested that the following year, as I turn 40 years old, I will become a full time mom and entrepreneur. I didn't know how I was going to accomplish this goal, however I knew I would find a way. Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe this is what was supposed to happen, I actually turned in my 2 week resignation on exact the same day on 8/13/2020 making my vision reality. I no longer have to choose between family and career, I found a way to have both.

I am grateful for my first mentor and pharmacy director, Dr. Jerry Siegel, for teaching me to dream big and think outside of the box. Because of him I was able to travel to California and spend one month as a pharmacy resident doing Pharmacy Management Rotation with Dr. Rita Shane at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. During my rotation, I realized that I found my home as my first job and 1 week post residency graduation I started my job as Regulatory and Compliance Officer at CedarsSinai. Spending the next 11 years and being mentored

by Dr Rita Shane, has taught me so much about being a female pharmacist entrepreneur, having a voice in our profession and pursing our dreams of advancing our pharmacy career.

I couldn’t have done all this without my amazing husband’s support. I have been able to do so many things on a side because of him. He is the one who got the kids ready for school and picked them up from school, he is the one who watched the kids while I was training for my bodybuilding show, marathon training or attending conferences and personal development events. I am grateful for my team who have supported me so much and everyone who has inspired me to push myself to become the best version of myself. I learned how to turn my excuses into my WHY, and if it wasn’t for the kids I wouldn’t have such a strong WHY.

Wow, how did I get here? That is a loaded question. As a child, I always wanted to help people and believed I would be a physician. After college, I looked into other health avenues and becoming a pharmacist seemed like the best option for me. During my last year of pharmacy school I went on an ambulatory care rotation and fell in love with it, I just knew I had found my calling and found what I would be doing for the rest of my working career. Unfortunately, after residency, it was not easy to find an ambulatory care job and it took me 4 years before I would find that “dream job”.

The first 3 years at my “dream job” were great and doors and opportunities opened for me. That fourth-year things began to turn. I went through a bad breakup and gained weight. The weight gain probably affected me more than the breakup because I had always struggled with a poor body image, comparing myself to other women, and thinking I was fat. The trauma of the breakup and the added weight really decreased my selfesteem. I was fighting feelings of unworthiness and that I had failed myself because I had gained weight again. I started to question myself and my purpose and what was next for me. As I began the recovery process, I started looking for ways to improve my health. As a pharmacist, I wanted to find a scientific backed method for healthy and sustainable weight loss. Through trial and error and research of different methods I went on to lose thirty pounds. During that time both my patients and my coworkers noticed my transformation. My coworkers started asking me to prepare meals for them to help them reach their health goals and my patients wanted to know how they could incorporate changes in their diet to help them get healthier and decrease their medication burden.

From there, my consulting business was born. As I continued to cook for my coworkers, I found that I had a passion for healthy cooking as well. My mom told me about a company her friend was using to prepare meals for them, and I looked into it. I met with the franchisors and connected with the mission and the vision for the 43

company and bought into the franchise.

Describe what you are building.

Currently I am building two businesses. Chefs for Seniors – Arlington/Grand Prairie is an in-home meal preparation service that focuses on providing affordable meals and companionship for our senior clients. Divine Hands Health and Wellness, LLC is my pharmacy consulting business that focuses on people with chronic conditions who want to decrease the amount of medications they are on. I work with them to create individualized nutrition plans based upon their disease state, their medications, and any other goals they have.

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

I think the biggest surprise about this journey is how important it is to have a community around you. So often we read stories about entrepreneurs and it looks like they were in some room by themselves and then bam, the business is born and becomes successful.

While that may happen for a few, I have learned that it is important to surround yourself with like-minded individuals that you can bounce ideas off of.

What is/was your biggest fear and how did you face it?

Failure or not succeeding has been my biggest fear. I have faced it in a couple of ways. I have affirmations that I recite that encourage me daily. I have accountability partners that I talk to weekly about my goals so that failure does not occur because I am stagnant or in my head too much. I also hired a coach to help me create a plan and path to success.

What is your response to failure?

At the beginning when things did not go as planned, I would get in my head and convince myself that I made the wrong choice and often sit in indecision about what to do next. Now, if something is not working, my response is to see why it did not work and to rework the plan. Failure is no longer an option for me. It is a steppingstone to redirect me to how my businesses should be running.

CHANGE: In 2020 we continue to experience change as a world, nation, profession, and as entrepreneurs as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic and racial injustices. How have these changes affected you personally and/or professionally?

2020 has brought about so much. As a black woman first, the continued racial injustices have weighed heavily on me. I have always been aware of injustices and discrimination, but this year the political unrest has brought about an uneasiness in my everyday life that I have never felt before. The unrest has pushed me to begin to confront racial inequality and health inequities by partnering with organizations to work to build access to healthcare and to work to end these unfair and unjust practices that continue to plague communities of color. I am no longer afraid to say that Black Lives Matter and know that it does not take away from anybody else. As Martin Luther King, Jr said, “an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” and that “no one is free until we are all free”.

What does it mean to lead yourself and your own company?

Leading myself and my company means taking personal responsibility for my actions. If something does not work, I have to look at myself and see if there was something I did or did not do that led to that failure. Leading also means taking pride in myself and in my company and making sure I show up every day as my best self as I am the face of my companies.

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role?

I would tell them to take a personal assessment to determine where the unhappiness is coming from. Are you unhappy because there is no room for growth in your current position? Is it because you see yourself doing something different? Is it because you have found your purpose and in your current role you are no longer being fulfilled? After this self-assessment, then you can start to write out and create your path to what will make you happy and make your dreams a reality.

What would you say to a woman who fears stepping out on faith?

What I have learned in business is that you will never have the how to or the answer to everything. There are several ways to get “the how” answered. If you Stepping out on faith has been one of the biggest things have an idea, talk to your potential client base and get feedback on your idea. Find out if what you want to I have ever done. I would tell you it will not be easy and there will be days that you doubt yourself and offer solves their problem and if they would be willing God. However, the growth that comes from stepping to pay for it, if not, go back and retool your business until it becomes something they would be willing to out on faith is bigger than any growth you will see staying stagnant in your current position. Stepping pay for. If you have already started your business but are not growing and do not know how, consider hiring out on faith pushes you beyond your comfort zone, a business coach to help you take your business to the it teaches you about yourself, and it helps you to embolden and empower the next woman who may next level. Invest in seminars and trainings that will be afraid to step out in faith. Doing it scared is better help you answer your how and help you grow. Lastly than not doing it at all. and probably most importantly, constantly make connections. You never know who you may meet that What would you say to a woman in pharmacy who can help you answer your how. can’t figure out “the how” to do what she dreams of doing?

First, I give credit to God. As a woman of faith, I know that I would not be where I was without my relationship with Christ. Secondly, my family and close circle of friends have pushed me, which continues to help me grow and become successful.

I recently hired an employee for Chefs for Seniors – Arlington/Grand Prairie and hope to grow and

I fell in love with pharmacy working at my dad’s pharmacy on Long Island. I had grown up sweeping floors at the pharmacy at an early age, then became a cashier and technician. I can still recall seeing my father interacting with distraught patients who were scared to take a new medicine and then how relieved they were after speaking with him. A huge expansion in my heart came over me as I watched these interactions andI knew that this was what I was meant to be doing. I knew it in my gut that I was meant to help people in the same way he had.

I went on to pharmacy school at St. John’s University and absorbed everything from my classes. I craved to know as much as possible so I could answer questions and help my future patients.

However, something interesting happened toward the end of pharmacy school. I started to have terrible anxiety and for the first time in my life, I felt God's presence and voice...telling me I was meant for more.

It was an undeniable feeling I had accompanied with the words, ‘You can’t stay here. You’re meant for bigger things.’

I followed that feeling. I decided to pursue the residency path, but there was one problem. My parents thought I was betraying them by leaving my dad’s pharmacy and discouraged me from pursuing this alternative, unknown path.

Despite the flack I got from my family, I had a strong conviction that I was indeed on the right track. I felt it at the deepest part of my being. So, I pursued it anyway. When I finally got the residency in April of 2012, my parents were furious. I was kicked out of my house, fired from my pharmacy job, and became 49

homeless for 2 weeks living out of my car with all of my belongings stuffed into my tiny Mazda 3. At the time, I was also suffering from a rare eating disorder called Night Eating Syndrome and still had debilitating anxiety. I was getting ready to graduate pharmacy school, had two board exams to take, and was starting my residency in a month from that time.

My entire previous life was metaphorically burnt to the ground in a matter of a day. And it all came from one decision. However, it gave me the fertile soil on which to build this new life I am going to describe.

Like a stumbling baby fawn, I set out into the world on my own into the unknown terrain of the ‘real world.’ I began rebuilding my life. I had no time to emotionally process what was going on. I needed to survive.

Two weeks later, I got an apartment, a new job, and graduated pharmacy school. I started my residency and during that time began taking courses at The Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I learned the skills to begin coaching people on lifestyle changes they could make to improve their health and began my health coaching business. As I was helping others, I began healing myself and picking up these broken pieces of my life.

I started to see how my beliefs, thoughts, and how I was conditioned impacted my health, the type of relationships I attracted, and how I saw myself. This went way beyond what I’d learned in pharmacy school. The concept that disease begins in the energetic realm after repeated negative thought forms and ingrained beliefs creates blocks in the chakras and meridians of the physical body.

The topics I became drawn to went way deeper than nutrition. I became obsessed with learning and absorbing everything I could about various healing methods such as reiki, hypnotherapy, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), energy work, and meditation. I took more courses than I can count 50

ranging from personal development to business to study with top leaders in the coaching industry. I studied hypnotherapy with Doug O’Brien, Tony Robbin’s head coach, went on a 1-month writers retreat with Mastin Kipp, and became a certified speaker with Joe Williams, another Tony Robbins coach.

As I released my own negative limiting beliefs, thoughts, and ways of being, my life began to flow in the most miraculous way.. Because I did the inner work, the external creation was reflected in my physical environment. I healed myself of my eating disorder and I attracted a loving partner. It was truly a journey of self-love that lead me to this point. I had the skillset, the knowledge, and the drive, but I had no clue how to build a business.

I hired multiple coaches who could help me build my soul aligned business. After all, we didn’t learn this in pharmacy school! My coaches taught me timeless strategies and systems to streamline my business. I hired a virtual assistant to help me scale my business and take tasks off my plate. The most fulfilling part was that I began attracting women from all over the world that I was able to serve with my soul gifts.

Looking back on my journey, I can see how much I was conditioned by my family, by society, and peers to believe that I had to fit into this metaphorical ‘box’ in order to be deemed successful. This journey has shown me that nothing is further from the truth and that when you follow your heart, amazing things can happen!

Today I am making the impact I craved so long ago and I’m always growing! I’ve written 3 paperback books, coached and impacted thousands of women, and have grown a multi-six figure business using my soul gifts.

Now I help pharmacists transform, create soul aligned businesses, and make the income and impact that they’re craving. In my Strategic Ascension Leadership Academy, I help pharmacists

get clear on who their soulmate client is, how to energetically and strategically call those clients in, and have the confidence to grow their income and impact exponentially!

As a result, many of my clients have scaled back on their pharmacy job to grow their businesses while I’ve helped others create a transition plan and quit all together! The results are limitless!

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

How many pharmacists experience the same fears, doubts, and feelings of burn out. This is why I created my Scale Your Side Hustle Pharmacy Group because we all go through similar things and it’s important to know we aren’t alone.

What is your biggest fear and how did you face it?

Leaving this Earth not making the impact I know I can make and not living up to my potential. I know now that our potential is infinite!

What is your response to failure?

It’s not even an option or a word in my mind because I see ‘failures’ as experiments where the details can be revamped and re-tweaked. Persistence is one of the biggest keys to my success. I’ve ‘failed’ hundreds of times and I’ve become stronger because of it!

CHANGE: We have and continue to experience change as a world, nation, profession, pharmacist, entrepreneur as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic and racial injustices in 2020. How have these changes affected you personally and as professional?

I saw all of this as an opportunity to step up into my leadership and be the example of resilience and open a portal for healing. I believe that the events of 2020 impacted people on a personal and collective level and gave us the chance to heal our own individual traumas, fears, and judgments.

These events brought up in me things that were unresolved that I needed to heal through. Instead of looking out into the world, I spent much of this year going within myself and healing my own judgments and fears.

I also had dozens of conversations with colleagues, friends, and women and men of color during the #BlackLivesMatter movement and began to truly see what they have endured from their perspective on an even deeper level. This has allowed me to be more cognizant and attuned to some of the added stressors that my clients face and offer a safe space for them to openly express what they go through.

It’s definitely allowed me to see things from a new perspective and expand how I coach and operate in my business.

What does it mean to lead yourself/your own company?

It means being the change I wish to see in the world and owning my truth, light, and power to be the example for others to do the same.

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role?

Examine your heart and feel into what it is that you would enjoy doing every single day. Then find a mentor, coach, or someone who can help you get there.

What would you say to a woman who fears stepping out in faith?

Read my story! I had tons of fear in the beginning and throughout this journey, but when you realize you are never alone, it becomes easier to step out with courage. Claim your destiny!

Notice where your heart lights up and who you admire and why. For example, you see a woman on your Facebook feed and you stop and say, “WOW!

I absolutely love being a pharmacist! The opportunity to be the bridge between prescribers and patients and proper medication use lights my fire. While in retail, I felt restricted and that I was unable to use the clinical knowledge all pharmacists are trained to do because I did not have all of the clinical data to make informed recommendations. Sending recommendations from a faceless pharmacist to a faceless physician did not create relationships that build trust.

As a consultant in nursing homes, I was able to review a patient's chart with all the knowledge at my fingertips (labs, diagnoses, etc). I wished I had that clinical information in the retail setting.

In the hospital, I could see the confusion in patient's eyes as they took a bagful of medications home. I felt like I couldn't take the next step - following them home to 55

make sure their medication regimen was best for them and their concurrent disease states.

And SyneRxgy Consulting (SRx) was born.

I started off in patient homes and ran into marketing issues because patients couldn’t understand how I (a pharmacist) could help.

This is why I hired business mentors, went through business incubators, and created a practice that I would want for my family member. I pivoted and marketed to physicians’ offices. I have found that my services not only help the patient, but the prescribers.

I am blessed to a part of a 20 provider practice for the past 5 years. I help them manage patients’ chronic disease states. The providers send patients with uncontrolled chronic disease states to me and I provide more intense education and make medication adjustments. Disease management areas include DM, HTN, Tobacco cessation, COPD/Asthma, pharmacogenomic testing and analysis, mental health, obesity, medication assisted therapy, and Hepatitis C treatment.

SyneRxgy also still provides medication reviews for individual clients and nutrigenomic reviews for self-funded insurance companies. SyneRxgy is currently working on scaling the nutrigenomics for individuals.

Our first conference in 2018 that was held in Asheville, NC had 75 attendees from 19 states (and Canada). Adding in pharmacogenomics to help the patient get on medication that works with their DNA has elevated personalized medicine to a new level I have been using pharmacogenomics (PGx) in practice since 2016. I have had 3 certificate trainings in PGx. None of them provided all of the components I was looking for. In 2018, Dan Krinsky and I we discussing the major gaps in PGx education for pharmacists. PGx101, LLC was created.

We use the Test2LearnTM platform which provides 20 hours of ACPE approved CEU and embellish the live portion with real case studies, a discussion with one of the physicians I work with, and ongoing support. We are able to offer a low cost PGx test for attendees so they can experience what patients experience.

Describe what you are building

As part of my journey, I hired a business coach. My biggest takeaways were mindset training, the benefits of networking, and systems. There weren’t very many healthcare people in this group, but I did meet Anna Garrett, another entrepreneurial pharmacist. I hired a COO in September 2020 and our BHAG (Big Hairy A__ Goal) is to expand SRx nationally. We have currently targeted 330 practices. . My goal is to make having a pharmacist in every physician practice a standard of practice (not necessarily though SyneRxgy). I am also expanding the nutrigenomic consults on an individual basis.

that allows us to connect with our followers in monthly virtual offers such as stories from successful Medis, webinars from speakers, brainstorm sessions, and Mastermind opportunities – until we can meet in person again.

PGx101 has offered 3 trainings virtually so far with more planned for the remainder of the year.

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

I am really enjoying having to think creatively to embrace the craziness that is 2020 and figure out how to continue to navigate these obstacles.

What is/was your biggest fear and how did you face it?

I do not like being seen. I am an introvert at heart. I still hold back more than my extroverted friends, but realize if I want to reach my goal of having a pharmacist in every physician office, I need to be out there (such as PharmaSis magazine).

I struggle with imposter syndrome and God reminds me to keep going on this path.

What is your response to failure?

One of my favorite books on this topic is The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holliday. I don’t fail, I learn and pivot around the obstacles, which oftentimes leads me on a better path.

This framework helps me to look at what I have learned and what possibilities have opened up when opportunities don’t go as expected.

Another book is Three Feet from Gold by Sharon L Lechter which reminds me to keep going when I feel like giving up.

I also reach out to my community of support who give me alternate ways to think about failures. I trust and thank God for this

journey that I am on. He is for us and not against us. Romans 8:31 CHANGE: We have and continue to experience change as a world, nation, profession, pharmacist, entrepreneur as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic and racial injustices in 2020. How have these changes affected you personally and/or as professional.

I realize I sound like I have my head in the clouds, but I am so excited to see the gaps in healthcare being blown wide open allowing pharmacists to redefine pharmacy. The old system is broken and new pathways are being formed. Laws are being enacted to allow pharmacists a bigger role in healthcare and providers are burnt out which opens up a crack in the door for pharmacists to show their skills and join their team. We are in the midst of a revolution!

Regarding racial inequities, I am having amazing conversations with POC. Medipreneurs has started a series along with Frank North (NPhA) and Donna Bellamy (MedsRUs Consulting): Prescriptive Solutions Attacking the Complexity of Racism. The first topic was Racism in the healthcare profession (against healthcare POC).

The second topic was Racism in professional organizations which was attended by 85 people including leaders of 8 national associations and moderated by Nancy Alvarez, past president of APhA. Our next topics are addressing racism in pharmacy school and disparities in healthcare.

What does it mean to lead yourself/your own company?

Great question!

I spend a lot of time investing in myself, reading, and engaging with others. I do my best to lead by example. I admit when

I am wrong and am open to opinions different from my own. It is during these conversations that common ground can be found and relationships forged.

My philosophy is to treat each patient as if it were my own family member. I instill this in the others I work with.

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role?

Let’s chat. You are enough. Let’s create a plan to get from where you are to where you want to be.

What would you say to a woman who fears stepping out in faith?

Romans 8:31. If God is for us, who can be against us?

Take the leap. It is hard and challenging, but the blessings outweigh the discomfort.

What would you say to a woman in pharmacy who can’t figure out “the how” to do what she dreams of doing?

I started working in retail when I was in high school. I loved working with the public.

Occasionally I would help in the pharmacy and soon decided that I really enjoyed being a pharmacy technician. My Sophomore year of college I changed my major to Biology and started taking my pre-pharmacy electives. 1 year after I graduated with my BS in Biology, I started pharmacy school. During school, I continued my retail pharmacy technician role. I loved it. I thought that the retail role was perfect for me and had every intention of retiring in retail. Once I graduated, I immediately moved into pharmacy management. I started then to think about going into a corporate position but was consistently getting shut down after every internal interview. I remember an interview and they only wanted to discuss what I did outside of work. I remember thinking, this is weird and clearly, they were not interested in me for the role. They were trying to get me to talk about things that were illegal to ask about in an interview. I ran into so many walls trying to further my career and after 20 years at that organization, I knew I was not going to get promoted. Not only was I not going to get promoted, I was also being told by my supervisor that I was not dedicated to my job. He made me feel like no matter how much I dedicated myself to the organization, it was never going to be enough. I think he was starting to build a case to fire me. I could not understand why he did not like me. My store was doing well. As a black female, I am always hesitant to think it was a racial thing, but that was the only conclusion I could make because I was such a hard worker and was really dedicated to my role. It was time to cut my losses.

I was still young and felt that I was destined for more in the world of pharmacy. Little did I know just how much would change when I decided to quit and go work somewhere else. I then went to work for an independent pharmacy where I was able to learn about specialty pharmacy. I went on from there, to work for a medical group where I was able to expand my career opportunities. I had several promotions and kept adding different skill sets to my portfolio. I decided that I wanted to be pharmaceutical industry speaker. I very actively asked many different companies to hire me. I started pitching the idea that a pharmacist on the speaking team was an asset.

I advocated for myself for 2 years before an opportunity presented itself. Thank goodness for networking. My very first speaking contract came on a recommendation from a friend. Shortly after I signed my first contract, I quickly started getting more requests to join speaker bureaus. Within a year, I had 6 contracts that represented 10 medications and 6 disease states. I quit my 20-year retail career at the end of 2013. I never imagined that 6 years later, I would be a sought-out speaker for specialty and oncology pharmacy. It was truly a testament to hard work, advocacy and networking. I was paid to speak at over 40 programs in 2019.

In 2018 I was part of a pharmacist group that I found was not a good fit for me. I decided to start my own that would be a good outlet for me and other pharmacist women. It was out of that adversity that Pharmacist Women was formed. I created a network of pharmacist women solely with the idea to create connections. We started to meet for a sponsored dinner program once a month in the Chicagoland area. The dinner programs continued to garner more and more participation and in February 2020 we had 80 pharmacist women and pharmacy students participate in the monthly networking event.

We have now moved to a virtual platform and hope to continue both virtual and live in 2021.

Describe what you are building.

I am in the midst of building this nonprofit platform for pharmacist to network.

Pharmacist Women Networking Association is an organization that seek to provide networking opportunities to women in pharmacy. I really feel like the sky is the limit.

This organization is meeting a need for women to connect in a positive atmosphere. My motto is “Invest in yourself and grow your network”.

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

The biggest surprise for me has been the endless amount of opportunities that have come my way. I cannot believe that I get paid to educate healthcare professionals all over the country about various medications and disease states. I cannot believe I had the idea of this networking group and that it has come to fruition. It is all just amazing to me. I am actually very grateful to God for giving me these opportunities. I remember that what “others meant for evil, God used for good”.

I have faced so many different challenges for reasons that were not clear to me at the time. But now looking back, I see how those situations were allowed to force me to choose a different path and to create a network that was a better fit for me than others that already exist.

What is your biggest fear and how did you face it?

My biggest fear to becoming over confident. I fear that I will fail to be humble. It is something that I work on often. I try to always keep a grateful attitude for what has been entrusted to me. I never want to forget the challenges that I faced that have gotten me to the place where I am now.

What is your response to failure?

I honestly do not think about failure much.

There is no time to give thoughts towards failing. Do I have times of laziness and setbacks? Of course! But I don’t see that as a 63

failure. I do have many people in my life that hold me accountable. I have family and friends that push me to be better. I am so grateful for my network.

2020 has been a whirlwind for sure. I was very resistant to moving towards a virtual platform.

It took me a couple of months to wrap my head around the fact that Covid was going to drastically change my travel and in-person networking plans. I have had to now embrace a platform that is not my preference. I have learned to adapt and have found that it is still a valid way to connect.

I feel like there is no other way to live but to take your career into your own hands. I have never been the beneficiary of getting groomed for leadership. I have always had to fight for myself and create opportunity for myself where nothing existed. I cannot wait for someone else, I have to do things on my own. I have to pave my own way. I think I have done that very successfully.

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role?

Don’t wait to make a change. Don’t give up The racial tension that is occurring is not new trying to make a change. It took me about 3 for me. I live it daily. What organization are you a part of that has allowed you to form meaningful relationships?

Not just cold emailing on LinkedIn. Real rubber to the road work. Usually the answer is nothing. That speaks volumes to me. You will not be successful until you put some time and energy into something that revolves around networking.
