Welcome to what inspiration, determination, and brilliance looks like. Whether you are in Pharmacy or not, you will be amazed at what a woman in pharmacy can create. If you read this magazine, let me suggest that you do more than ooh and ahh at the stories you read. I suggest that you think on what your own dreams are and run after them. This magazine was birthed from a dream and asking for help to produce it. I received it and even more.

If I didn’t know these women, I would reach out and connect with them on social media and ask to connect for virtual coffee. They are amazing, and I look at connections with others as opportunities to learn. Go ahead, ask to meet them, get on their calendars and see what you learn and share of yourself too.

Tell your story…how did you get here?

compounding that anti-rejection medication for that pediatric heart transplant patient. One weekend in Wichita while attending a diabetes accreditations course about a decade ago, everything changed.

The speaker made a statement that I can remember like it was yesterday. She stated, “We know that diabetes takes 15 years to happen.” That statement filled me with disbelief, curiosity and just a bit of anger and shame. What is going on in those 15 years? Why do we wait until year 16 to help patients with diabetes?! Why were we not talking about this with our patients? How can I help my patients at year two prevent progression into this debilitating life? These were important and, what I now know, life-changing questions.

I want you to have a great life. I want one of those, too. Health is foundational to that great life. I use my knowledge, skills, and resources to facilitate this in the world. I am in the unique position of having served as a pharmacist in one community for 30 years and now, 4 generations of families. I have known and loved many of these patients longer than I knew my mother! I do not want to get that call from Trish or Bill that they were diagnosed with cancer or were in the hospital with a heart attack. It just hurts too much. It became clear to me that pharmaceuticals alone, were not enough in providing all that I could for the people I cared for. I really want my world to not NEED pharmaceuticals…to not be sick.

I love science. More specifically, I love the science that when applied makes a difference in the quality and experience of life. I love reading all kinds of studies, in all aspects of science, gleaning bits of knowledge to incorporate into my understanding and counsel. I love sharing that eating nuts every day could extend one’s life, just as much as I love

At the same time the business of pharmacy became unsustainable. Our profession had been hijacked.

I stink at business and consider myself a business hack. My patients need me to be the best clinician I can be. Business, as an independent pharmacy owner, is the vehicle that allowed me the freedom to best serve my patients. One did not need to know much about business to know that you cannot 9

sell your product below what it costs and stay in business very long. I (pharmacy) had lost control of our profit margin. While I am not moneymotivated, I am very money-responsible. It was clear for me to be available to provide care to my patients and feed my family I had to have a business that worked. I had to have enough profit to continue.

No margin, no mission. Community pharmacy was a “one-trick pony,” as pharmaceuticals were our predominate product for sale. Something had to change in order for me to survive. I asked my staff the question, “How do you be a pharmacy and not fill prescriptions?”

Modern Famine, obesity is not the problem, but is often a symptom of a toxic and deficient culture.

DrKathyWeightLoss.com is my 12-week program structured and packaged to assist patients in discovering and altering the appropriate drivers of their weight. These were the same conversations and support that for years I had been providing “on the fly” as patients picked up their prescriptions, or by answering that urgent “Kathy only” question on the phone. What was different was the packaging and MARKETING of this information into a product consumers could purchase.

The most important part of DrKathyWeightLoss. com, the marketing, was personally the most difficult. Going from being “good ol’ Kathy” to “DrKathy” was extremely uncomfortable. Who am I to call myself Doctor? Who am I to boast of my competency or value? What will physicians think?

How can I charge patients for what I had been giving away for decades? Not the doctorate hanging on the wall, nor the decades of successful outcomes could quiet this chaotic and limiting internal dialog.

These are conversations that many of us “pharmacy servants” have, and I had to get serious therapy and coaching to manage!

We decided, we were going to assist our patients in not needing medications and they were going to pay us to do that. This, with my determination to stay in business, forced me to create new “products” to sell. Patients wanted to support me, but it was up to me to create ways for them to do just that.

I recognized the “assets” that I was not using to create margin were my knowledge and reputation.

I began packaging those valuable conversations for sale. This began my journey into creating programs and products to support patient’s well being and at the same time creating a more sustainable business model. It was also when “DrKathy” the brand, was born.

Pharmacy does a terrible job branding and marketing our value. We know our value, but we often fail to communicate our value to the marketplace or to the patient. Patients are suffering because pharmacists are not intimately involved with patient care. Patients are dying because they do not have the clinical skills of a pharmacist on their team. I am a critical member of my patient’s team. I apologize to no one for giving my best to my patients. Communicating the pharmacist’s value directly to the patient through marketing was THE missing piece. What has me push through my discomfort is that intense desire for people to be well. An intense desire for my grandchildren to be born into a world where they can have a long and healthy life. As a dear pharmacy friend pointed out to me, “DrKathy” is not a brand, “DrKathy” is a stand.

I just so happened to have had a lifetime study of obesity. I grew up loved, accepted, and obese in a family with multigenerational morbid obesity. It seemed I was the only 100 pound 5-year-old in 1972. I was 200 pounds at 10 years old and had a grandfather who weighed 350 pounds during the Great Depression. I have experienced decades of low-calorie weight loss programs, weight loss pills at 8 years old, and even weight loss surgery.

Decades of research and struggle as a patient and as a practitioner, coupled with an intense desire to figure this out for my future daughters, provided me a unique clinical point of view. I knew the standard narrative around obesity, “Eat Less and Exercise More,” was WRONG. I was also incensed at the abuse, trauma, and complete lack of compassion the obese patient experienced at the hands of modern medicine.

On any given day you will find me being a mom to two wonderful college aged daughters, a wife to an incredibly tolerant and supportive partner, an independent pharmacy owner, an employer, a

clinical pharmacist, entrepreneur, student, problem solver, educator, and patient advocate. It is a lot. I struggle in asking for and receiving help. A toxic level of shame around letting people down can keep me isolated while at the same time driving me to press on. The rest of my career and life is about creating a culture that produces health. This stand is disruptive and at times, terrifying. The fear and uncertainty that frequently arises with this purpose is quieted by my intolerance of the fact that 80% of children under the age of 18 now live with a chronic disease (up from 5% in the 1980’s). This keeps me up at night. This drives me. How do we create a new reality? How do we support people in being well? How do we create the business model of prevention in pharmacy? How do we assure our grand babies can live long and healthy lives? I need your help in answering these questions. I need your help in creating a culture of health. Pharmacists are exquisitely trained and positioned to assist patients

with the foundations of health. Medications are only approved as an “adjunct to diet and exercise.”

In knowing the mechanisms of medications and disease, pharmacists know the fundamentals of how to prevent disease and disease progression. We are the ones to bring health to our world.

Describe what you are building/have built (your business; your career) “The pharmacist is the patient’s chemistry expert and is a critical member of the patient’s health team.” This conversation/responsibility has been the foundation of all clinical and business strategies over the past 30 years. In addition to a 20-year independent pharmacy business and a robust consulting practice, we have created the DrKathy brand. DrKathy is a nationally recognized brand providing pharmacy and patients with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to integrate foundational lifestyle health initiatives into 13

Who do you look up to or model yourself after?

daily practice. The brand includes consulting, supplements, protocols, and educational content.

DrKathy Nourish is our newest initiative that includes health-focused foods, pharmacy-based nutrition and cooking education.

I look up to and study those people in history who stood for something greater than themselves—Jesus Christ, John F. Kennedy, Theodore Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Abraham Lincoln to name a few. How did they manage their human frailties in order to persevere? I find their stories fascinating and uplifting.

What’s been your biggest lesson you have learned along your journey?

After 30+ years in pharmacy and 55 years of life, the biggest lesson I have learned is that LOVE HEALS. Love and connection are critical for health. Our connection with a patient is THE most important component for optimal clinical outcomes.

What message would you share with other women in pharmacy?

YOU have what it takes to make the difference right now!

How do you respond to fear?

You are a professional and have a professional opinion, GIVE IT!

My immediate response to fear or threat is to work harder and become isolated, irritable, and obstinate.

This seldom produces the life I want. I work to understand and observe these automatic responses and get coaching to create a different outcome.

What you know is valuable, do not be afraid to value it.

Apologize to no one for doing your best.

What do you learn from failure? Are you afraid to fail?

The world NEEDS you!

YOU ARE ENOUGH!

The fear of failure slows me down! As a pharmacist, trained to a perfectionistic standard, I have had to work to embrace the risk, discomfort, and growth that failure can provide. Success and failure are two sides to the same coin and are often assessed through a lens of past traumas and not our current commitments. I have learned to focus on the destination and the commitment, and enjoy the journey along the way.

What’s next for you and/or your business?

We are building and supporting a nation-wide network of pharmacists implementing lifestyle strategies within their practice. We are launching a private mentoring group in February 2022 focused on pharmacist-led lifestyle understanding and implementation. The second quarter of 2022 will bring the launch of a wholesale line of natural sea salts and gourmet seasonings with the DrKathy Nourish brand to be sold in pharmacies.

Also in 2022, we will work to communicate the pharmacist value to the marketplace with a case study highlighting the clinical impact of the 300+ participants of our weight loss/health coaching program. It will be a busy year!

My husband and I are embarking on that traumatic time in life called empty nest as our youngest daughter moves on to college. Professionally, I will be focused on supporting pharmacies and pharmacists in implementing foundational lifestyle strategies into their practices through DrKathy Health and DrKathy Nourish. I also will be working to increase the recognition of pharmacy as an integrative solution by participating on several national health advisory boards.

The Chemistry Expert Written By: Dr. Kathy Campbell

Man, pharmacy school was hard!! Biology, pharmacology, physiology, kinetics, pharmaceutics, pathophysiology, toxicology, immunology, physics, oh, and did I mention chemistry-inorganic, organic, biochemistry, and medicinal chemistry!? There is no curriculum quite like or arguably as intense as pharmacy school. Each class strategically building a mechanistic and functional understanding of body chemistry, the chemistries of disease and the chemistries of medical interventions. I found little about pharmacy school easy or particularly enjoyable, but with every lecture, late night study session and passed exam there was the strategic molding of a pharmacy practitioner whose professional opinion patients would need and come to rely on.

illicit substances, toxic and nutrient deficient “foods” and environmental toxins. The chemistry going into modern humans is anything but simple and anything but benign. The foundations of health that have been ancestrally passed down through generations - food, movement, water, love, sunlight, and sleep - have slipped away from our cultural structure and from physician’s consciousness. We are sicker and more vulnerable than ever.

The profession of pharmacy has always evolved to meet the needs of our patients. It was just 25 years ago that innovative pharmacists applied their clinical skills in a new way, by providing pharmacist-led immunization.

No one could envision the future impact of those pioneering pharmacists - a global pandemic, 250 million immunizations, countless lives saved and a new, evolved profession. Today, more than ever, our communities need us to use our unique clinical skills in a new way - to prevent the onset and progression of chronic disease. We must understand, educate, and advocate foundational health for our patients. We must create new business models that recognize and support the pharmacist’s critical value and pharmacist-led prevention. We must be the chemistry expert that works upstream of the diagnosis and assists patients with optimizing health, not just managing disease. Health is not taking 10 medications; health is much closer to not needing 10 medications. We must help patients not NEED medications.

It was not long ago that everyone had a pharmacist, everyone had a professional relationship with their chemistry expert. Much of healthcare had traditionally been provided by generations of mothers and grandmothers armed with love, ancestral knowledge, and a vast garden. For decades, centuries for that matter, physicians and pharmacists added to grandma’s foundational care to support the patient with unique and personalized solutions. Largely based on the botanical chemistries provided by nature, pharmacists and physicians combined the understanding of these modalities with the intimate understanding of the patient that had been developed through lifelong relationships. These were our neighbors, our families, our communities, our future that we were entrusted to care for. The care was intimate, direct, swift and we needed our neighbors to be well.

YOU have what it takes to lead health. YOU, the one that stayed up so many nights and passed all those crazy hard classes, are THE most highly trained healthcare professional in the area of chemistry. YOU understand the genesis, mechanisms, and treatment of disease.

YOU are exquisitely trained to apply those foundational skills in a new way - to the science and chemistry of disease prevention. The current pandemic of chronic disease dwarfs any infectious pandemic man has ever seen. YOUR PROFESSIONAL OPINION MATTERS and our communities desperately need the pharmacist’s expertise and courage to stand for health, now more than ever. YOU are the patient’s partner in health. Now is the time for pharmacy to once again, evolve.

Never in history have humans had more chemistry going into their bodies. The strategic marketing of pharmaceuticals to physicians beginning in the 1940’s was part of a profound cultural shift in health.

No longer did we look to grandmas and gardens for health. Generations of Americans and medical professionals became conditioned to look for health in a pill bottle. Currently, seven out of ten Americans take a prescription medication and four out of five take a supplement…add to this the easily available over the counter medications, botanical remedies, 17

Tell your story…how did you get here?

My journey thus far has been crowned by a relentless pursuit of exceptionalism in the service of others. The grit, resilience, and continued commitment to invest in my growth and development are a direct result the amazing highs and unbelievable lows I have had to overcome.

To fully understand how I have come to be the person I am now, one must go back to the beginning of my journey when I moved to the United States (US) and did not understand a word of English. My parents made the ultimate sacrifice to move my sister and I to the US for the hopes of us receiving the best education possible.

Two years after this move, I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and had to begin dialysis immediately. Essentially, by the time I was 16 years old, I had been forced to learn the importance of adaptability and responsibility.

When most of my peers were concerned with dating and acne, I had to go to dialysis three

times a week and then to school afterwards. I missed high school entirely. This experience was not only isolating, but was also frightening.

Imagine being a teenager, where the conversation was always about doing the right things for your body or end up in the hospital or worst. Fear, uncertainty, and isolation dominated this period of my life.

I credit good teachers and phenomenal health care professionals for how I overcame this period of darkness in my life. Despite the daily challenges I faced with my health, I graduated from high school with honors. This accomplishment solidified the grit and tenacity to pursue my dream of becoming a pharmacist no matter what it took.

My 22 years journey as an ESRD Survivor and two time kidney transplant recipient motivates me to help others accomplish their goals. I am avid believer in the fact that each of us have the power to inspire and motivate others to

accomplish their dreams. My reason for targeting students is singular- it just takes one person to acknowledge someone’s dreams, then takes on a life of its own.

Describe what you are building/have built (your business; your career) I have been building a premier postgraduate candidate coaching and resident career planning and development business.

For the past five years, I have successfully coached residency and fellowship candidates to secure the post graduate opportunity of their choice.

What’s been your biggest lesson you have learned along your journey?

My resilience is my superpower. Each time I have a set back, I lean into the lessons that I am meant to learn but I never give up. There is nothing I cannot overcome.

How do you respond to fear?

I do my best to confront fear in its infancy.

Allowing fear to take hold of my ideas or goals is just not part of the equation. I deal with it early so I can focus on getting things done!

What do you learn from failure? Are you afraid to fail?

I have learned that I am not defined by my failures. My perceived failures were the best lessons to teach me about resilience and myself. I would not be where I am today, without my failures! I do not fear failure.

Rather I fear the possibility of regret from never going for the things I know I can do.

What new thing are you embarking on in your life right now?

The season of being the best kept secret is over! In this new season of my journey, I am focusing on building relationships and partnerships to make my services more accessible to students. I am great at what I do! I know that many students can benefit from my services and I want to make it available to them.

Who do you look up to or model yourself after?

My mother is the most giving, and selfless person I know. Her dedication to making everyone she meets feel seen and heard is one I strive to emulate in my daily life.

Making sure that I treat each person with the respect and dignity they deserve regardless of what they can or cannot do for me is what she instill in us.

What message would you share with other women in pharmacy?

That idea you’ve had about wanting to do something amazing is possible. You are the only one that can make it happen- go for it!

What’s next for you and/or your business?

Bring my program to schools and colleges of pharmacy around the country. I am looking to establish relationships with schools that are facing challenges with their residency match rates and fellowship offers. BODY ACCEPTANCE

BFF'S- My Body & Me 4-Ever Written By: Dr. Danielle Perrodin The longest relationship that you will ever have in this lifetime is the one you have with your body. You are not your body. There is a “you”, and “you” have a body. Stop identifying yourself as your body. We are spiritual beings that have a mind and a body connected to it. How would you describe the relationship you have been having with your current body? The best relationships in life have three main things in common. Quality time spent together, great communication, and the way each treats the other.

Have you been in a one-sided relationship all along? Take an assessment of all three and see if there is room for improvement in any of them. This is the key to unlocking the secret of self-acceptance. Until you can love and accept the body that you have unconditionally, it will be an uphill battle to try and find clothes that you love on it. You will always be focused on it's flaws while missing out on all it's beauty. Dress to honor and adorn the most precious friend that you will ever have. Your body isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, you might as well give it some attention beginning now.

Spend quality time together. Look at your body in the mirror. I mean REALLY look at it. Not with a side glance as you run out of the bathroom after a shower. Stop and stare. Get reacquainted with it. What has changed about it?

What has remained the same? Does it make you happy? Or does it make you sad? Whatever the emotion that comes through, it has been there all along. You have just been too busy to notice. This is real, raw, vulnerability. Don’t skip this part. Any good relationship deserves time spent together. If you notice that the thoughts and feelings are not so good…take Mel Robbin’s advice and give it a high five in the mirror each morning. This will begin to connect you back to the good feelings you once had with it.

Communicate better. How are you currently communicating with your body? Are you a good listener? Or do you do all the talking? Or should I say, criticizing? What does your body have to tell you? If you are feeling negative emotions when you think about or see your body, that means that there is a desire for things to be different. Ask yourself where those thoughts are coming from. Are they from your childhood? Things you heard your playmates or parents discuss about what a body should look like? Are they from magazines and other media that you have consumed showing only one body shape and size? These are questions

that must be visited. The judgments and lack of acceptance that you have about the way your body looks may not be a conscious thought from you at all. You can change those thoughts over time. It may be that your body wants to be healthier. That can change too with the help from you.

Treat your body well. How do you want to be treated in any relationship? You want to be heard and seen. Understood.

You want to be taken care of, provided for, and nurtured.

Give your body what it needs. Plenty of rest, sunshine, hydration, healthy foods. Protect it from toxins. Stop beating it up. Physically and emotionally. Give it love and attention.

Dress it in clothes that show how much you appreciate it.

Spend time, money, and energy on providing whatever it deserves.

You only get one body. We are so lucky that we all get a different one. How boring it would be if they all looked the same. They come in different sizes and shapes. Different skin colors and textures. That is what makes our world so interesting. It is a beautiful quilt woven together. I wish the two of you a lifetime of happiness together.

Chasing Dreams & Reaching Goals Tell your story…how did you get here?

I felt stuck for a long time and thought the only way out was to apply for a new job that would provide the professional growth and satisfaction I was looking for. However, year after year my resumes always ended up in the void and I rarely, if ever, heard back from anyone. I was frustrated because I was a good pharmacist. I was even called by my district manager the ‘happiest & most pleasant pharmacist he’d ever met’. That was a great title, but it still didn’t help me get a job in the current competitive market or develop my career professionally.

Remember to include how you felt. We often tell the story with no emotion and communicate only the facts.

When this happened, I felt alone, afraid, etc.

Also, I am not looking for your “pharmacy story”. You likely have had life challenges in addition to career challenges.

Hi there, everyone. My career in pharmacy was very traditional for quite a long time. Upon graduating pharmacy school I jumped right into my retail pharmacy career. I worked in retail pharmacy for 10+ years. I enjoyed helping patients, but so often I felt I was medicating them rather than truly helping them.

I figured that’s just how pharmacy was and will always be unless I went off and got additional training such as a residency or board certification.

What was a PharmD like me to do?

I enjoyed my job, but I also felt stuck. I felt like I topped out at my career at age 24 when I was a newly graduated PharmD. That is the trap of the golden handcuffs, right? You have this incredibly high salary, but are then trapped and pigeonholed by that job that provides so well for you.

In the midst of being a pharmacist in-person at the beginning of a worldwide pandemic I felt that enough was enough. I had to make a change because the new conditions of working in a retail setting were previously extremely pressurized, and now it felt unmanageable. It was the spur I needed to make real changes.

Quit pharmacy altogether?

Go get a more extensive education?

Spend my free time endlessly applying to new positions I had little hope of getting?

I chose to invest in myself and go all in on me. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

I spent hundreds of hours reading every entrepreneurial book I could get my hands on, listened to dozens and dozens of RPh + entrepreneurial podcasts, and honestly talked with anyone and everyone who would have a conversation with me about what was possible for a pharmacist.

a lot of trial and error and was so proud of having patients who I now could truly help understand their medication. This was true patient care. No longer was I just medicating patients. I was now practicing at the top of my education and it felt so good.

I had many pharmacists reach out to me to learn how to create their own consulting practice similar to mine—-and the PGx Consulting Confidence Academy was born. I created the Academy to teach other pharmacists exactly how to monetize their knowledge as a pharmacist. To truly help patients in their community during a national mental health crisis while charging for their services (no more giving your information away for free, you pharmacists) was what so many other pharmacists out there wanted to do— but just didn’t know how.

Then, I created my LinkedIn account. That’s when everything really changed. I saw and connected with hundreds of pharmacists doing really innovative & amazing things. I thought, “if they can do that, then I can do it too!”.

It became clear very quickly to me that pharmacogenomics (PGx) was a big topic for our profession, however, it seemed that many people were talking about PGx, but too few were actually doing it. Bingo! Now there is an opportunity. I got my PGx certification and really saw the light. I saw clearly and understood how personalized medicine is the future of the profession of pharmacy. To me, PGx is a science all patient-facing pharmacists should champion to truly help their patients make sure they have the right medication, at the right dose for their unique body.

I teach my Consulting Growth System that provides a simple, yet effective blueprint to put yourself in business as a pharmacist, using a variety of different business models. It is extremely rewarding to teach pharmacists life skills that empower them to take control of their career and be a force for good in their community. In less than a year I’ve taught more than 130 pharmacists….and I’m just getting warmed up!

I also now provide industry-based consulting to PGx labs, universities and institutions who are seeking to unlock the power of pharmacist through personalized medicine. I love what I do!

Consulting Confidence Academy membership. I want to teach even more pharmacists how to build a business and how to do so confidently. It is so much fun. If you’re reading this and like the idea of going into business for yourself using personalized medicine, then girl, we’ve got to talk!

Lastly, I co-founded Own Your PharmD to provide high-level entrepreneurship training for PharmD’s who are looking to do big, innovative things outside the box. I believe in the power of the PharmD to pursue non-traditional pharmacist roles. I’m helping teach, train and mentor a growing army of PharmD’s who pursue their passion and solve needs out there in the world using their unique knowledge and skill set.

Same for my Own Your PharmD packages. My business partner Karen and I are having the time of our lives growing our own multi-six figure companies and teaching other big-thinking pharmacists how to do the same thing. It’s fun to show the world what a PharmD can really do.

I love what I get to do and I love the future of pharmacy. It is changing big time and those who prepare according are going to thrive well into the future. It is a great time to be a pharmacist! Can’t you feel that!?

Personally, I’m seeking to not define myself by my company or my job title. I do love what I do, but that’s not who I am. I’m developing myself as a mama (4 little boys) with a wide variety of interests who truly loves every day of her life and doesn’t take it for granted.

What’s been your biggest lesson you have learned along your journey?

Who do you look up to or model yourself after?

I’ve learned that you can do anything you set your mind to. Honestly, you can! If you want it, and you pursue it with determination and dedication you’ll surely achieve your goals.

Oh, a combination of many high-achieving women throughout history. I have so many best friends I met through reading their books that have taught me so much.

How do you respond to fear?

What message would you share with other women in pharmacy?

I eat fear for breakfast! No, but really. Fear is just part of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. If you’re doing scary things every day then you’re not growing.

I don’t let fear hold me back and I’m good at doing things while scared.

What do you learn from failure? Are you afraid to fail?

You can do it! Stop overthinking. Stop living in fear.

Just take a step toward your goals and you’ll see that action cures fear. Also, there is so much potential in pharmacy for non-traditional roles of a pharmacist.

Think big and go chase some goals!

What’s next for you and/or your business?

I love failure! I welcome failure. Failure means that I’m trying. Failure teaches me what doesn’t work so that I can pivot and learn the lesson I needed to learn from failure. I’d still prefer not to fail, but gosh, failure brings lessons you can’t learn any other way (and lessons you won’t soon forget). Plus, I’m not scared to fail so when everyone else gives up after failing once or twice you know I’m still going to be in the game moving forward.

Growth, baby! I’m going to teach even more pharmacists in my Academy this year than I did last year and I cannot wait. I spent a full year developing and fine-tuning my program and now I’m excited to scale. I want to help as many hundreds and thousands of pharmacists as possible.

Why Having Impostor Syndrome Is Totally Normal (And Means You’re on the Right Track) Written By: Dr. Christina Fontana

When we think of having impostor syndrome, the immediate implication is that it’s something we want to release or get rid of. What I’ve found, however, is that we can reframe it to see it as a GOOD thing and it becomes easier to move through.

You can anchor through the 5 senses – seeing your goal on a vision board, seeing it in your minds eye, or even associating a scent or feel with your goal.

Surround yourself with evidence every day that your goal is an absolute certainty.

Let me explain.

#2. Take guided action from that version of yourself.

Whenever you’re stretching yourself into the next level of growth, it’s natural for you to feel this inner feeling of ‘being a fraud.’ Why? Because you haven’t yet embodied the person who steps into that reality.

For example, if you’re a pharmacist wanting to be a full-time entrepreneur, you’re going to feel a tug-of-war inside yourself because you’re not fully embodied in being the latter. Impostor syndrome is this gap - between moving away from your old identity (pharmacist), but not quite being anchored into the new identity (full-time entrepreneur.)

Think about how that version of you would act, think, move, and operate. Then act, think, move, and operate from that place. How would you associate differently with money, show up on social media, and/or reach out to ask for opportunities? Stretch yourself in little ways and become aware of where you stop yourself, procrastinate, or freeze. This could look like you sharing a picture of yourself and sharing your opinion in a post on social media, as an example.

The less we can resist this ‘impostor syndrome’ and embrace it as a natural step through transformation, the easier it will be to let go of the meaning it brings and transition to your next level. If you’re feeling this, it means you are on the right track because you are stretching yourself!

Here are three ways you can ease the transition as you’re growing to your next level. #1. Anchor into that new version of yourself every single day.

Anchoring is an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) term that means you are linking an internal action or stimulus with a new, programmed response. For example, you visualize what it would feel like and look like to already be that confident version of yourself. You’re anchoring this in as your new reality.

#3. Tune into your authentic self, not the version that others are expecting.

We get conditioned to ‘fit in’, put our heads down, and work hard. As pharmacists, we are used to being perfect and may fall into people pleasing, too.

Transformation involves deprogramming those parts of ourselves so we shine the way we are meant to – as our authentic selves.

What is your authentic, true self? What stories do you have in your mind about being that version of you?

You shine most brightly and make the biggest impact when you’re unapologetically yourself. How can you be more of that NOW? It’s okay (and totally normal) if you feel like an impostor! Allow yourself to feel it and take bold action toward the life you want in 2022 and beyond!

Dr. Janan Sarwar Windows and Mirrors of Opportunity Tell your story…how did you get here?

As a daughter of Bangladeshi immigrants growing up in rural Tennessee, I often found myself in situations where I was different from the rest of the crowd. Over time, I embraced my individuality and decided to pursue an unapologetic, nontraditional approach to life, while blending a passion for science with an interest in the arts. My experiences inspired me to advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all spaces and to utilize my voice to educate and elevate others.

Throughout my didactic years, I successfully integrated creativity into academia, securing a post-doctoral fellowship in Educational Technology, R&D at UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The immersion in adult learning theory paved the way to producing innovative print and digital pharmacy content for over seven years at the American Pharmacists Association.

Throughout this period, I grew as an editor, leader, and publisher, taking calculated risks and implementing novel approaches to developing an online learning platform and publishing over thirty textbooks.

In 2021, my children inspired me to establish a book publishing company to address the need for diversity in literature, Global Bookshelves International. I also support fellow pharmacists to discover their passions, uncover roadblocks, and reach their goals as a career coach. I actively coach and serve as the Chief Content Officer for the career coaching company, The Happy PharmD. Driven by a love of the written word and innovation, I am now a medical writer and content developer for a continuing medical education company, generating timely micro-content for variety of healthcare providers. I regularly write and speak on several platforms, actively volunteer in the community by reading to children, and mentor both student pharmacists and foreign pharmacists. However, my most beloved role has been growing up with my children as a mother.

My three, darling daughters appointed me as a co-host and editor of their diverse children’s storytelling podcast, Salaam Storytime. I may also be found in the kitchen of our “minimalist” living space, developing recipes, and pretending to be on the next episode of Chopped with my incredibly supportive husband.

Only you know what path is for you. If that road leads you somewhere you do not want to be, you do not have to feel stuck. You can find a new way.

The experience and lessons learned along the path will become part of your journey.

“Windows” and “mirrors” are perfect analogies to what I have built in my career. Global Bookshelves International is an independent book publishing company that cultivates and celebrates diversity and representation. A book that highlights an underrepresented community has the potential to be a mirror for the individual it depicts.

However, this same book may also serve as a window, or glass you can see through into a new, unfamiliar world for hundreds of others.

As a career coach and speaker, I encourage and motivate pharmacists, by holding up mirrors to reflect a new perspective that they are unable to see themselves when they are too burned out or focusing on their flaws.

How do you respond to fear?

By slowly exposing myself to what I am afraid of and mentally breaking down what I have to do to overcome it. My favorite question: “How do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “One bite at a time.”

Failure has taught me resilience and how to be humble. Every risk has the potential of failure, and risks are essential for success. I embrace failing and encourage everyone to free themselves from the fear of failure.

Mindfulness practices to “be” rather than “do,” and implementing more self-care and self-compassion in my life and as a parent.

I knew then that this was the beginning of something huge for me.

I immediately saw the potential short-term real estate had for job and income replacement.

That’s how I was able to change the game and get the odds in my favor.

I remember the very first time I made my very first dollar without punching in to my shift at the pharmacy. It was from my very first real-estate investment, and my mind was BLOWN.

This was huge, especially for a woman like me. Why? Because I was born in Haiti—the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Because it made me realize that I had found a way to make money that didn’t rely on how many hours I worked. Not only did I find a way, I actually experienced it for myself.

For as long as I could remember, I was driven to make a difference and not take my parents’ sacrifices for granted.

Growing up in the inner-city of Miami, I worked hard, got straight A’s and went on to get my doctorate.

want you to experience what it feels like to generate income outside of your daily 9-5 job. Because trust me when I tell you—that feeling does not get old!

I spent hours studying math and science, but financial literacy was not part of the curriculum.

Describe what you are building/have built (your business; your career)

So when I graduated, it was with a whopping $500,000 of student loan debt on my back.

Since 2021, I have built an incredible community of 4,000+ members and growing. All of them are successful, driven (and busy!) professionals who are now discovering how to get started with short-term rental/AirBNB real-estate investing. Many of them are also mentees inside my Real-Estate Coaching practice and Mastermind, which generates incredible results for my students every single week. Personally, I have built a lucrative AirBNB portfolio of 18 single family luxury homes.

I didn’t want to be 50 years old still paying off my college tuition, and made the decision early on to hustle hard so I could pay off the loan and be debt free as soon as possible.

Cue me struggling, burning the candle at both ends, and working multiple extra hospital shifts to pay it off.

To get a sense of how bad it was, I only quit one of my jobs when the pharmacy I worked at was robbed at gunpoint.

What’s been your biggest lesson you have learned along your journey?

Only years later did I discover real estate, but it changed the entire trajectory of my life.

Time and time again, taking imperfect action has been the key to transforming my life and the lives of my mentorship students. My Aha! moment was when my small business generated a $100,000 month.

For those who are still on the edge, hesitant to take the leap, here’s what I want to say: Stop letting your $100K/yr career keep you from your $100k/mo business. It has been proven over and over again that small imperfect action will ultimately help you achieve the time freedom and financial freedom you’ve always dreamt of.

Today, I’m a health care professional by day and shortterm rental investor by night.

And I’m now the owner and manager of 18 luxury short-term rentals and a lucrative cash-flowing rental portfolio.

I also juggle the responsibilities of being a wife, raising two boys, managing a full-time career, a real estate coaching program, and self-managing my rentals by utilizing a team, tech, and systems I have implemented over the last 2 years.

How do you respond to fear?

My most recent claim to fame is a recent Netflix TV series showcasing our luxury rental that serves the film industry right here in Georgia.

First, I always pray and lean on my amazing support system.

I’ve surrounded myself with people operating at a higher level than I am, so I lean on their expertise and courage to empower and guide me when fear strikes.

Given my history and experience, what I’m most passionate about is helping busy medical professionals create a profitable new income stream and full-time freedom through luxury vacation rental investing in the most profitable markets.

Now, it’s my goal to share what I’ve discovered on my journey to building a lucrative cash-flow rental portfolio through the Luxury Short-Term Rental Academy.

Honestly, there’s nothing quite like sitting in a top mastermind with individuals who are crushing it. I borrow some of their courage through their process, internalize, and use it to move past fear. Everyday, I encounter new things in business that induce fear, and make me pause… In those moments, I hang on to Marcus Aurelius’ words:

I know you have so many amazing hopes and dreams in your heart. Whatever you do, do not let them fade away! Here’s the truth: You are so much more powerful than you can even imagine. Surround yourself with those who support your dreams. Use fear as a way to propel yourself forward. If you truly believe and take MASSIVE action—you can 100% achieve what you want!

What do you learn from failure? Are you afraid to fail?

You either win or you learn. Failure is only a learning experience.

I used to get down on myself and wonder if I was doing entrepreneurship ‘right’ because some days felt it Iike I was doing it totally wrong.

What’s next for you and/or your business?

I was faced with issues upon issues—failed launches, an HOA dispute, most days were spent troubleshooting.

Helping busy professionals get started with luxury short-term real estate investing. I want to help them grow a powerful, profitable business that makes a meaningful impact by giving them full-time freedom and supporting a life that they love.

When I consulted with my coach, she told me: “You’re doing it. This is entrepreneurship. It’s solving problems.” And whew! My mindset shifted.

Ultimately, when I learned to solve my own problems I was able to solve the problems of hundreds of other individuals. So now I welcome failure. I just failed on a launch a couple weeks ago, but the information we gathered from this failed launch is absolutely priceless.

Dr. Chinki Bhatia was born in the Kingdom of Bahrain. She developed an early interest in medicine and worked with her grandmother, an Ayurvedic Practitioner. This led her to study pharmacy at Birla Institute of Technology, India. She immigrated to Australia in 2003, where she enrolled at the University of Sydney to complete her Master of Pharmacy with a specialization in in-vitro fertilization. She was then awarded a scholarship from the University of Florida to complete her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 2004. She acquired her Ph.D. while working on multiple projects and writing her dissertation on the role of cannabinoids in short-term memory. During this time, she also served as a role model and mentor to young people, helping them plan for their education and careers. DANIELLE PERRODIN Tell us about yourself I live in South Louisiana with my husband Kevin, we will be married 20 years this June, and three teens including our daughter Mori Lee, 16 and twins Ethan and Landon, 13. I have worked as a pharmacist for 16 years in hospital, long term care, and behaviors health.

Describe your passion and why it’s important.

I rediscovered my passion for fashion and personal development a few years back when I found myself in a place where my career, family, and household duties left me no time to focus on my own growth and creativity leaving me feeling unfulfilled and stifled.

What do you want women in pharmacy to take away from your expertise shared in your articles?

I want the women in pharmacy that read my articles in PharmaSis magazine to leave believing that how they look on the outside and feel on the inside is utmost importance to them and the world around them. Investing in themselves whether it be in a stylist, clothes, or a coach is an investment in their future.

I never learned to do a cartwheel even though I was cheer captain in high school. On my bucket list!
