ABOUT PHARMASIS MAGAZINE This issue of PharmaSis Magazine features women who are trailblazers and not afraid to run after their dreams. They have been building their “What’s Next?!” and have moved the needle in their businesses in a relatively short amount of time. I wanted to do an issue with the theme of collaboration so you can see women pharmacists working together and know that there is plenty of room for everyone to go after their dreams and support each other. You will enjoy hearing from Blair, who was my very first coach when I decided to enter the world of entrepreneurship. She has coached numerous pharmacists to become consultant pharmacists. I met Kimber at a pharmacy entrepreneur conference a couple of years ago and knew she was destined to leave her mark on the hospital pharmacy sector. Danielle, was my coaching client who really enjoys helping people identify their style! She coached Lauren and identified her style as Lauren prepares to take the functional medicine pharmacist world by storm. Lauren and I met last year as she invited me to speak on a panel at a functional medicine symposium. I met Melissa in order to introduce her to one my coaching clients and am learning how direct sales can also be a dynamic career!

WELCOME TO THE SPRING ISSUE OF PHARMASIS MAGAZINE, where

the goal is to celebrate women in pharmacy. These women have determined to define their careers and ultimately leave a legacy while building the life of which they dream.

I am Dr. Jerrica Dodd, Founder and CEO of Your Pharmacy Advocate, a concierge pharmacist consulting practice that partners with patients and their healthcare providers for safe medication use. In earlier days of building the consulting practice, I encountered numerous women pharmacists who requested time to chat and ultimately shared their fears, dreams, and pressures they experience in the ever-changing environment of the pharmacy profession. Though not my original plan, a pharmacist coaching business has evolved from these many discussions. I still meet and talk with women pharmacists weekly and now I am able to offer them coaching on “the how” of transitioning in their career to building a life they love. As I have met, coached (Danielle) and collaborated with the ladies in the pages that follow in this magazine, I was inspired to share and tell their stories. I continue to be motivated to celebrate these ladies for their courage, brilliance, and determination to change their careers and ultimately their lives. I want other women in pharmacy (students to veteran professionals) to see these women running after their dreams and know that they can do it too! This is how PharmaSis Magazine was born!

As we celebrated Women’s History in March, join me in celebrating with the women pharmacists in the pages that follow and be inspired by their tenacity and their drive to change their world and the world in which they live!

When I entered pharmacy school in 1992, I remember being instructed to look around…Everyone that entered school with me was not going to be there upon graduation. That was unfortunately true and it also fostered a competitive environment that I can see amongst some in our profession today. I have also seen the wonders of collaboration when women pharmacists work together without competition to produce amazing results. In March we celebrated Women’s History Month and I personally want to acknowledge and thank women pharmacists for the work you do to build a place for yourself in the profession while serving and changing the world with your gifts.

GreenThielemier Elevating Pharmacy One Pharmacist at a Time

Share your story: I was let go from my position as a clinical hospital pharmacist of two and a half years when I was six months pregnant with my first child in 2014. At that time, the job market was just beginning to get saturated, but instead of diving back in to the “traditional” job opportunities, I decided to go a different route.

I felt angry at myself for not doing more to build myself a 'safety net' in case of an emergency. I felt scared that we'd dug ourselves into too much debt to ever get out and my student loans would drag on forever. I felt determined to build a business that could create multiple revenue streams so that I could feel confident in never being in that position (dependent on one income) again.

A series of events, led me to running the MTM programs of a couple different independent pharmacies in my area, so I decided to learn as much as I could about clinical program business models for pharmacists.

Part of my learning process is writing what I am learning, so I started to do that and share what I was learning on my blog and on LinkedIn. 9

Other pharmacists began reaching out and asking for my help and that is when I realized the information I was collecting was of value for my colleagues.

I ran a beta group for three coaching clients at the end of 2015 and, as they say, the rest is history.

Describe what you are building/have built.

After the pilot in 2015, I knew I didn’t have the bandwidth to continue along the one on one coaching path. I hired a business coach and tried to figure out how my work could have a bigger impact.

We settled on creating an online course for “How to Build a Pharmacy Consulting Business” along with a book (found on Amazon).

That was just the beginning of what became the Pharmapreneur Academy, though. The more I dug in to learning about business and marketing and how pharmacists could work with patients and providers in an ambulatory setting, I was hooked.

In 2017 we were still building the courses in the Pharmapreneur Academy, but I wanted to do something that would help pharmacists see these opportunities for free. I had been hearing about this thing called a ‘virtual summit’ and I wondered how I could apply the concept to pharmacy.

I sought out experts and leaders in the pharmacy space and interviewed them about their innovative models. Then I released all the interviews in a free, five-day event at ElevatePharmacySummit.com I’m super excited about this year’s Summit, April 8-12th, 2020 because I’m featuring my own business mentors and coaches. This year’s event is going to be the most unique, progressive pharmacy conference ever put together!

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey?

I’m constantly surprised by where I am. At the same time, I’m honored and a bit confused as to how I got here. I call myself the “Accidental Teacher” because I have no academic blood, or entrepreneurial blood for that matter, but yet here I am because I followed my heart. If your Intuitive Voice is calling you in a direction that doesn’t agree with the Logical Voice in your head, take a chance and see where it leads.

Every time I’ve followed the Intuitive Voice, though scary, I’ve ended up in a better place that I could’ve ever dreamed.

What is/was your biggest fear and how did you face/address it?

One thing that comes up often for me is/was the fear that others will perceive my ambitions as something negative.

Like, for example, when I first started sharing about my business on Facebook, I was worried people would think, “Oh that Blair, she’s so full of herself ”.

And even now, I recently shared on a podcast that my purpose, I believe, is to represent Pharmacy as a leader in that national spotlight. Like Good Morning America type of spotlight…

And when I say that to you, Jerrica, I know that you understand where its coming from. From a place of service to the profession. But I still worry that it will be perceived as, “Who exactly does SHE think she is to represent an entire profession!? What a narcissist!”

But I guess that fear will probably always be there, so I try to re-orient myself with my “why”, my purpose to advance the profession of pharmacy and keep trudging on!

What is your response to failure?

Never, ever quit if your Intuitive Voice has directed you there.

I fail ALL THE TIME. We just had a launch in January that fell on deaf ears. Does that mean I quit and give up and say oh well?

No, that gives me an opportunity to sit down with my coaches and mentors and say, why did this launch fall flat? What could I have done differently or better?

What is the plan for next time?

You can’t exactly fail if you never give up, right!

COLLABORATION: What is your view on collaboration (vs. competition). Describe a time when you collaborated or an ongoing collaborationon I’ve been collaborating with you, Jerrica since 2018 when we hosted our first Female Pharmapreneurs Mastermind!

I’ve never once been concerned about competition.

I believe everyone connects with the people they are supposed to.

That’s why I’m committed to bringing FIFTY high achieving female, pharmacist business owners together for this year’s Mastermind in Las Vegas in September 2020.

I don’t care whether or not you work with me.

All I care about is that you START working with SOMEONE! What’s next for you and/or your business?

Great question! Wherever my Intuitive Voice leads me I guess. I’m strengthening my Listening skills through meditation so I’ll probably be just as surprised as anyone when my Next Step comes through!

Until then, I will continue helping pharmacists through the Pharmapreneur Academy, the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summits and the Female Pharmapreneur’s Masterminds.

Insecurities By: Dr. Jerrica Dodd

T

alking about the women pharmacists that cross my path, I had a colleague say, “Pharmacists are brilliantly insecure.”

I cannot agree more! We are definitely brilliant, yet due to our training and other factors, we are insecure. We seem to like to keep our intelligence a secret and don’t imagine that the world will ever pay us for what we know. Sure, we take care of patients as employees of pharmacy entities, but when it comes to building what we want for ourselves, our careers and our lives, we become shrinking violets.

All of a sudden, the confidence that propelled us through pharmacy school, residency, fellowship, jobs, and life is now a fragment of what it used to be. We are at the mercy of institutions of employment that have workplace dynamics that repel us and make us question our very choice of profession as well as our competence. Or some may be insecure because we have been given the understanding that we should “stay in our lane” and not step on the toes of other healthcare providers who may not readily recognize our worth beyond dispensing. Whatever the reason, pharmacists have an insecurity that is fed by a mindset stemming from not recognizing, owning, and communicating our worth.

My advice?

Acknowledge your worth and remind yourself of this worth daily Place yourself in environments and among people that affirm your value 2.

Enlist in a mentor or coach to support your personal development and growth 3.

Avoid (if possible) people and environments that don’t affirm you 5.

Run after your dreams and refuse to let insecurity keep you from them You are amazingly brilliant! You’re are beautiful! Your passion is needed in this world!

Collaboration is one of my favorite words. One of the reasons I love being in business is because of the ability to collaborate with other business owners. I usually do most of my work alone, yet whenever I have the opportunity to collaborate I love making it happen! Oftentimes, I invite colleagues to come and work with me on a project or platform or they invite me to come and work with them. I really get excited because it’s a way to make things happen for both of us; a way to have each of us go further than we may go individually.

You just never know what you may come up with and I enjoy new opportunities to create what’s possible. Collaborations yield learning, giving, receiving, sharing, and good for all in involved because its “win/win”. One of my favorite people with which I collaborate is Dr. Blair Thielemier.

Our relationship started in 2017 with her as my coach and now we have progressed to be friends and we collaborate often. I’ve been grateful to serve as an affiliate for her business. When I identify people that could definitely benefit from her coaching services I send them her way. I don’t think, “oh my gosh, that’s one less client for me…”

Instead, I say, “this potential client could benefit from Blair’s program.” I’m very familiar with her program as well as her products. Another way we have collaborated is preparing for this edition of PharmaSis Magazine. In December 2019, we

By: Dr. Jerrica Dodd spent a couple of days together, long days! We spent an afternoon coordinating our attire for the collaboration photoshoot, and then an entire day on the photo shoot itself. It was one of the most fun times that I’ve ever spent with Blair and I think that we got to know each other even better! From coordinating our outfits at Design Faze Boutique in Atlanta, to getting our hair and make-up done together to the actual photo shoot. It was really awesome to host Blair here in Atlanta!

We have also collaborated on Blair’s Pharmapreneur Women CEO Mastermind events for two years now. She identified the personalities she wants in the room, and I have helped with facilitation and moderation.

Working on that collaboration is one that I have begun to look forward to yearly. I anticipate future collaborations with Blair as it’s been wonderful to work with her!

Other collaborations I have enjoyed include working with my coach, my own coaching clients and other pharmacist coaches. I frequently partner with other complimentary health professionals as well as co-authors on book collaborations. The list is endless…Collaboration has been a wonderful career boost!

Growing up, I was fascinated with my mom’s medicine cabinet. It was full of herbs and supplements.

There was the stinky valerian that smelled up the whole cabinet. Echinacea for when we had a cold.

Ginger for the motion sickness that my brother and I always got when traveling. But I was also a sick kid growing up. I had a lot of ear/sinus infections, which meant lots of antibiotics and antipyretics. I remember the tasty pink amoxicillin and bright orange ibuprofen liquids. I’d dose them out with my little medicine spoon and happily take them.

When I thinking about college, I knew that healthcare was my calling. I took a career test that confirmed my desires and said I’d make a good pharmacist. A friend’s mom was a technician at an independent pharmacy and got me an after-school job as a technician. I absolutely loved it from day one. It was “organized chaos” and I got to help people, which was the best part. I was accepted to pharmacy school at Ohio Northern University in 2007.

While I was in college, I met my (future) husband. After I moved to Dayton my P4 year I was looking to get a new internship. Looking for a new experience, I joined Walmart, but truly thought I wouldn’t like it, and I’d go back to independent pharmacy. Turns out, it still felt like my own pharmacy, but with the capacity to reach so many more people. After graduating, I was a floater pharmacist for a few months until a pharmacy manager position opened up in Springfield, OH. I managed that store for a year, and then we moved to Michigan for my husband’s job. I was able to transfer and managed the Livonia store for a year. It was at this point that I discovered Functional Medicine.

One day, we got a flyer in the mail for a place called Integrative Wellness Centers. My husband had been struggling with his health and just feeling horrible with insomnia, anxiety, brain fog, sinus problems, digestive issues, and difficulty losing weight despite exercising and eating healthy. I was skeptical, because when I first googled “Functional Medicine” as they called it, there was a lot of mixed information. But then I saw that the Cleveland Clinic had just opened the Center for Functional Medicine. If they are doing it, then it must be legitimate. He signed up for their program, did a ton of bloodwork, and began an elimination diet. It turned out that he had gluten and dairy sensitivities, candida overgrowth, and high inflammation levels.

Within a few weeks of beginning the diet and using the supplements, his health turned around and he felt better than ever before. Most noticeable was that the sinus congestion and snoring went away.

At this point, I was convinced this was the future of medicine. A few months later,I became the pharmacy manager in Flint, MI, right as the water crisis was starting to gain media attention. My patients would come to me asking what to do, but heavy metal toxicity wasn’t something that we really learned to address in pharmacy school. I started researching and found this was something that could also be addressed through a functional medicine approach. Wanting to learn more, I looked for training options, and found the Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine program through the University of Western States.

I was promoted again to a Market Health and Wellness Director with Walmart, which fulfilled my five- year career goal that I set an intern. This role has helped me grow as a leader and opened doors that I would have never imagined. I even got to achieve another career goal in 2019 when I was selected for a three-month special project assignment at our home office, working on a nutrition initiative for Health and Wellness. It was my dream come true, and I’m excited for what the future will hold as functional medicine and wellness continues to permeate the retail industry.

During my time in the master’s program, I was so excited about what I was learning that I started teaching other pharmacists about this new approach through CE presentations at the Ohio Pharmacists Association and Michigan Pharmacists Association.

I would have pharmacists ask where they could learn more. At the time, there weren’t any resources specifically for pharmacists in functional medicine,

so I created a Facebook group called Functional Medicine Pharmacists. As that group began to grow, I needed to make the information more widely available, so on August 27, 2017, I launched www.FMPhA.org and the Functional Medicine Pharmacists Alliance was born.

COLLABORATION: What is your view on collaboration (vs. competition). Describe a time when you collaborated or an ongoing collaboration In a time when our profession can feel divided, collaboration is the most important step we can take to strengthen our position. Pharmacy has been in a challenging position for many years now, even as I was graduating in 2013. There is division between different pharmacy settings, and what makes one a “clinical pharmacist” or not. (I’d argue that we are all clinical pharmacists by nature.) There is division between pharmacists and other healthcare providers, turf wars for scope of practice, or who’s to blame for the opioid crisis. Sadly, pharmacists don’t have the strength in numbers that other healthcare professions exhibit, like the American Medical Association or the American Nursing Association.

There is a sentiment that our voices aren’t heard and that our associations don’t do enough to represent our interests. In fact, our voices are fragmented into the alphabet soup of organizations that represent our separate interests instead of our common goals.

I see all of these divisions as opportunities to change the direction of our profession. My goal with FMPhA is to collaborate with the multitude of organizations out there in order to bring more value to their members. We know that pharmacists want to make the most of their time and money, so I look for ways to partner with organizations and show them how functional medicine will benefit their members. How can this way of practicing be integrated into any setting or organization? Options include hosting a meetup in conjunction with a conference or doing an online webinar.

Outside of collaborating with fellow pharmacy organizations, the second half of FMPhA’s mission is to integrate pharmacists into functional medicine. Instead of waring over who is going to provide the patient’s flu shot or perform medication reconciliation, the functional medicine care team should be a team effort. There are challenges here, but we are overcoming them quickly. At my first functional medicine training, a picture was shown of a care team which included all types of practitioners, including a doctor, nutritionist, and a chiropractor, but no pharmacist.

Once I brought this up to the speakers, they amended the slides and made sure everyone in the room could talk about how they could leverage a pharmacist on their team. Often times, the first thought is “compounding.” But we also are experts in deprescribing, replenishing drug induced nutrient depletions, and safely managing pain. The functional medicine community is beginning to understand and even embrace these roles, thanks to allies like James Maskell and the Functional Forum, and Harry Jablonski and Ortho Molecular Products.

There’s also an amazing community of pharmacists who are finding their voice online, from Facebook to Instagram, on Podcasts or YouTube. It’s a great way to collaborate, to lift each other up, and to share how a functional medicine approach can be life changing and benefit the pharmacists themselves in terms of self-care reimagined.

What’s next for you and/or your business?

Lastly, we will have committees for those looking to help take on a leadership role within FMPhA and advance our place in the functional medicine community. It’s going to be a big year, and I think that there couldn’t be a more perfect time for us to take this next step as an organization. I hear from pharmacists every day who want a change, but feel stuck. Functional Medicine gives you a new lens in which to practice, and it can revitalize your practice or help you branch out into something new! FMPhA will continue to provide resources, support, and information to help implement this approach. Our goal is to unite pharmacists, practitioners, patients, and organizations in our mission to integrate pharmacists into Functional Medicine, and Functional Medicine into pharmacy.

FMPhA has been truly a grassroots effort for the last two and a half years, but I’m excited to announce that 2020 is the year we finally became an incorporated organization! The new website will be launching with professional membership options so that we can grow this community into a full-scale movement. The goal will be to have state chapters, so it will be easy to connect on a more local level and focus in on state laws to advocate for expanded pharmacist’s scope across the country. There will also be practice forums, to discuss and learn how to implement a functional medicine approach in any setting, from consulting 25

On Creating a Next Level Life Share your story: At a young age, I learned firsthand just how short life can be as well as how easily you can fall into the achievement trap. I lost my step-daughter and husband to two separate automobile crashes by the time I was 21 years old. I had started taking pre-pharmacy courses and had been working at the university for about a week when a State Trooper walked into the office and informed me that my husband had passed. I was devastated. If it were not for continued school enrollment being a requirement for the only income I now had, I would have dropped out right then and there. I recall going back to school after some time off and trying to sit through chemistry without bursting into tears. I thought to myself, “Who gives a damn about the Periodic Table?” and ran out of the classroom. I switched all of my classes to easier electives and pushed through.

After my pre-pharmacy courses were complete I was accepted into pharmacy school. I felt that life was so short and I did not want to waste a second. I wanted to have a family. After being introduced to my now husband we decided to marry while in I was in pharmacy school. We waited until graduation to have kids, and unbeknownst to me I was carrying my daughter as I crossed that stage (if I had known, I would have skipped the celebratory chocolate martini). My insecurities reared their ugly head the day of graduation. Looking back now, there were emotions at play being pregnant and all. I remember feeling so alone and unworthy that day of graduation after walking off stage. My family and fellow classmates were all there, but I felt, sad. I went to my car and cried.

I have never admitted this to anyone. We were in such a rush to finish school, have kids, get the job, buy the house…we kind of forgot to stop and…well, live!

I found myself always reaching for more. I went from hospital staff pharmacist to Critical Care Clinical Pharmacist, and on to Director of Clinical Pharmacists.

During that time, I was invited to coauthor a chapter in a book, Casebook in Clinical Pharmacokinetics and Drug Dosing. That was another time my lack of selfconfidence showed up. I was afraid of any judgment and comparison that would come from it. What would people think of my work? I white knuckled it and ultimately was proud of my work, but I knew it should not have been that hard to write on clinical work that I performed every day. And I never celebrated my accomplishment.

I sort of kept it a secret.

After I had my twin boys, which we nearly lost to Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome, and my daughter began kindergarten, I decided it was time to slow down and work closer to home. Again, I thought to myself, life is too short. Though I had worked hard, I quit my job and I began working at a small hospital next door to my daughter’s school. My hours were getting cut more and more there and eventually it was time to get back to full time hours. We were paying for a lifestyle that included a mortgage, new pool, private school, dance etc.

After over 10 years in the pharmacy industry, I found myself earning six figures and yet still not happy. My life looked great on paper. I was very blessed with a beautiful family, husband and three wonderful kids; still somehow feeling unfulfilled. I kept telling myself when the kids were older or when I made more money, things would get easier. But then another year would pass, I would get promotions and the kids grew a year older…but nothing changed. I was tired all of the time, and I had gained a lot of extra weight that I could not lose.

Until the craziest thing happened…I somehow found myself in a meeting with a successful photographer in my area at a coffee shop, where I was peddling hair extensions and faux mink eyelashes. Talk about out being 27 of my element. I felt like such an imposter.

What did I know about beauty products and why did I think she would care? To top it off, a former pharmacist coworker walked in to order coffee. How did I get here?

The photographer and I hit it off, and we had a successful collaboration with a boutique and models (one of which ended up being the daughter of a pharmacy owner that I once worked for…I can’t make this stuff up!). I began building relationships in the industry which led to me becoming a sponsor for the local Fashion Week.

The first night, I was hooked! I never felt so alive being in the environment of it all. It was inclusive to all shapes and skin colors. The theme was “The Future Is Female.”

I grew up loving to play with Barbie Dolls, and I always loved expressing myself through my style. I never turned down a chance to help a friend or family member figure out what to wear. My favorite part of any trip or vacation was planning out all of our attire. I had found my passion again and it was just the thing to pull me out of a mild depression I had spiraled into from spiritual disconnection and years of unhealed emotional trauma from my early life losses.

What is/was your biggest fear and how did you face/ address it? The fear of being seen. I always thought I was one of the most positive people I know…until I had a desire to begin being the face of my brand and putting myself out there. There was something holding me back, and I discovered that it was my unconscious thoughts and beliefs that I was not enough. I overcame this through meditation, affirmation and visualization practices where I embodied the new emotions of faith, gratitude and confidence. I now use fear as my compass.

I began volunteering on my days off from the pharmacy to help out with any fashion week promotions or photo shoots. I steamed endless amounts of clothes, helped load and unload it all, and even found myself holding up lighting reflectors when needed. In order to grow my social media following, I began sharing live video on Facebook.

And there it was again! I did not feel confident sharing selfies much less video of myself! I began studying and sharing the law of attraction with my followers. I had to get rid of these feelings of unworthiness. It was working!

Not only did I gain more engagement throughout my journey, but the weight came off and my confidence grew!

I was invited to speak at the Fashion & Business Panel at the next Fashion Week. I suddenly forgot how shy I was. At this point, I had dropped my focus on my online business and began training to become an Integrative Life Coach in order to help other women that were going through the same struggles as I was experiencing.

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey? You can do anything you set your mind to do.

The Universe is ready and waiting to co-create whatever your heart desires!

What is your response to failure? I look for the lessons in the failures and work to shorten my bounce back time.

Resiliency is the key to success. I focus on action instead of results.

COLLABORATION: What is your view on collaboration (vs. competition). Describe a time when you collaborated or an ongoing collaboration: I live for collaboration! Nothing gets me more excited than lifting others up. A rising tide lifts all boats. I mentioned before my collaboration with the successful branding photographer/ stylist, owner of Barefoot Photography, Jess Roberts. She and I have an ongoing collaboration. I coached her through a faster injury recovery and shedding a few pounds. She took amazing branding photos for me and helped build my website. We are also collaborating on a webinar of her closed luxury photography group.

I will speak on the mindset needed to raise prices with confidence. I am the only non-photographer in the group and value the collaboration very highly.

When Jerrica called me on that hot July day and asked me the question “What do you love so much that you would do for free?” …it was a no brainer. I had just left an all-day photoshoot in the woods and on the top level of a parking garage. I was a little sad to have to leave early to take the call. Truthfully, I wanted to think of something more logical. I was now a certified Life Coach at this point, and loved serving others in this way. I could have easily said, “I should be a Health Coach”. That would have made so much more sense. But instead, I said “Fashion”.

Next, we are headed to New York for Pre-Fashion Week Branding where we will be offering a full package, which will include styling, hair, makeup, photography, and business/marketing coaching for two lucky entrepreneurs. I coached the Acadiana Fashion Week CEO on stress management, and she later offered me a board member position on her latest project, Fashion Institute of Louisiana.

Describe what you are building/have built: I am building a Virtual Personal Style & Image Consulting business for busy entrepreneurs that are working to create a huge impact. They understand the importance of being the face of their brand, but lack a style in which they feel confident. I am currently filling a steady stream of 1:1 clients, then I plan to offer group coaching, masterminds and online courses. My mission is to help women create happier, healthier more beautiful lives by styling their

What does it mean to lead yourself/your own company?

I have always been very independent. Leading myself can be challenging at times but always rewarding. The most challenging part is staying consistent and doing the work that isn’t as glamorous and fun as other parts. I love setting my own schedule and being able to work virtually from home.

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role? First, understand that your happiness comes from your thoughts and your thoughts alone. If you need help with this, hire a coach!

Then decide from a happy place if it is time to pursue something new.

What would you say to a woman who fears stepping out in faith? Hire a coach! Realize that fear is evidence of a desire that you have in contrast to your belief that you can achieve it. Follow your Fear! Change your Beliefs!

What would you say to a woman in pharmacy who can’t figure out “the how” to do what she dreams of doing?

The dreaded how! As pharmacists and action minded individuals that most of us are, we want “the how” to just be handed over to us. Just give us the instruction manual and we got it from there. But it doesn’t work like that.

No one can tell you how, because they are not you. They

have not been given your particular desires and beliefs and no two paths are ever the same. “The how” can only be found in the now. You have to be present and aware, and listen to your intuition. Don’t try to predict all of the future steps and obstacles; just take the next step presented before you. Step out in faith.

What would you say to a woman considering hiring a coach? Just Do It! Invest in yourself. Coaching will help you in all areas of your life. Everyone needs a coach… even coaches. Jerrica helped me to expand my online presence, identify my ideal clients and step out in faith over fear.

Getting Motivated: How a Coach Can Help By: Dr. Jerrica Dodd Many pharmacists that I speak with are not convinced they need a coach. Somehow, after graduation, I think they feel they have reached the pinnacle of learning and cannot learn anymore. After all, when pharmacists graduate they have a doctoral degree. Well, let me tell you… I have invested in myself, my love of learning and my lifelong commitment to build my dreams. And a coach was just what I needed. I have worked with several coaches depending on the skill, tasks, etc. that I was building at the time. Pharmacy Consulting, Productivity, Mindset, Marketing, Life… These are all areas that I have hired a coach to help me grow. For the rest of my career, a coach will be a part of my personal and business development team.

Recently, I was feeling unmotivated to do the next thing in my business…I had a string of

conversations that were energy zappers and wondered if I was really making a difference. My coach and I had a scheduled strategy session yet when we talked she could see that my focus, my energy and my momentum was off. We talked about what was off, why it was off, how I was feeling and thinking and developed a list of simple things I could focus on to get things going. She set up time for us to stay in close communication so we could assess and redirect again if necessary.

I do the same with my coaching clients. When they feel unmotivated, have questions, wonder if the journey they are on is worth it, we jump on the phone. Usually they leave our calls feeling amped up and ready to move forward. We talk about life, business, personal growth, and whatever is slowing them down. When they are learning what it takes to build a business they are bound to run into obstacles and challenges. It’s one of the ways I serve them.

I am grateful for my coach and how motivated I feel after we work together. I am also grateful to be able to support my coaching clients in finding their motivation when they need support in remembering their “why”.

I am a mother of three, North Carolina Native and self-proclaimed “Corporate Dropout” turned entrepreneur. I have 12 years of experience in multiple facets of leadership in the pharmaceutical industry and pharmacy practice. I had a highly sought after and highly demanding job as Medical Science Liaison Director that consumed a significant portion of my time and left no room for my creative spirit or family. I endured stress and lack of sleep due to anxiety around yearly consolidations, reorganizations, contract breaches and general job instability in a very volatile but lucrative job market.

I began to realize in my mid-thirties I had climbed Mt Everest at rapid speed to get to the pinnacle of my career and realized that I’d climbed the wrong mountain. I didn't even really know who I was anymore or what my priorities truly where in life other than chasing the next promotion and ensuring I wasn’t in the next cohort of lay-offs that were eminent in my industry. I was burnt out from being overworked along with the constant stress of job insecurity, looking for a better quality of life. I was struggling with the idea of creating a more ideal life with more space for my family and fun. But I needed to find a solution without compromising my income as the primary breadwinner at the time, before it was too late. I felt trapped in my MSL director role, although highly compensated, was not purposeful enough for my soul for the amount of time I was sacrificing away from my family, community and hobbies that brought me joy.

I felt I was slowly losing my own identity and becoming a corporate robot that was defined by

professional titles and meaningless metrics. This all masked who I truly am and how I am impacting the world and loved ones around me. I realized I was just going through the motions without really questioning “What is my true destination?” “What legacy am I going to leave?” “What do I want the next 20 years look like?”

As serendipity would have it (or by the grace of God in my eyes) I resorted to a health and wellness company to help support my burn out fatigue. I needed to fuel myself while juggling 2 little kids in diapers and a high-powered career. As a health food nut and clinical expert, I looked with a critical eye at all data on the nutrition and supplement lines on the market. I landed on Isagenix due to their quality, purity and clinical data. I also knew after giving birth to 2 children back to back, there was a lot of mineral loading and supplementation I needed, to fill the gaps post pregnancies to bounce back.

At the time, I had absolutely no interest or knowledge of the power of residual income through a word of mouth business, otherwise now known as “social selling”. I was simply looking for top quality on the go nutrition and supplementation to fill the gaps I knew I needed in my fast-paced lifestyle to thrive again. Within weeks my energy levels, mental clarity and sleep where significantly improved. I was showing up better for my employees, boss, kids, and husband. Loving my product experience, I began sharing my experience with my fellow burnout corporate colleagues, clinician friends and pharmacists, knowing they could benefit as I had.

I slowly began my own partnership with Isagenix 37

in the pockets of my time, becoming a “holistic and functional” pharmacist to my network as a side passion that fueled my fire. I became passionate about teaching others how to establish better gut health, optimum pH, reduce inflammation and cortisol in the body and overall improvements in nutrient timing to reset the body back to an optimum baseline. Hundreds that I introduced to the product line in my network began seeing the same massive shifts in energy, sleep, mental alertness, and weightloss. I quickly began to see the power of getting ahead of chronic illness through proactive nutrition and supplementation awareness versus the reactive medicine pill lifestyle I’d studied, practiced and researched for nearly 20 years prior. My business grew like wildfire because my clients had great results that could be felt and seen to the world. I found a community of dreamers who were on a mission to not only improve world health, but in the process create their own time and financial freedom through the Isagenix business model. While still working full-time, a third baby growing in my belly, I was able to create a six-figure side hustle income with my Isagenix business, paying off over 100K of pharmacy school loans in a year and a half. In my third year with Isagenix, while on maternity leave from my corporate job with my 3rd child, I was given an ultimatum for a position that was less than desirable travel for my family needs. Given the financial freedom I had created and lack of dependence of my MSL director income, I fired my boss while on maternity leave. All in three years’ time, while working full-time, I was able to build an income producing asset that allowed me choice and freedom to walk away from my corporate golden handcuffs when the career no longer suited the needs of my family. I am now a thriving entrepreneur who has partnered with many pharmacists passionate about functional medicine and how they can incorporate the Isagenix business into their functional medicine concept and create an additional income stream that drives incredible health results for their patients and networks.

Describe what you are building/have built: I have built a network of over 5000 consumers and business builders in my Network Marketing company, Isagenix. I’ve been recognized 5 consecutive times as a TOP INCOME EARNER through my proven methods to grow and scale an online business. My passion to break the stigma of the old “pyramid scheme” mentality of historic MLM’s and to educate on the incredible opportunity of the business of the 21st century: work from anywhere, be your own

boss and create residual income that pays for life, not just on the day you go to work. I’m passionate about educating my burnt out corporate and clinical network on the incredible opportunity to build an income producing asset with low risk alongside their day job to create more choice and more freedom in their lives.

I have now spun off 2 new coaching services for all entrepreneurs in the social selling space, not just for my Isagenix team. LinkedIn is the most underutilized platform with the greatest visibility and potential for recruitment for business opportunities and it is my mission to professionalize the social selling industry even further through the power of networking and recruiting for business partners on LinkedIn. I have coached thousands to success on my methods within Isagenix, but am now opening up and offering courses for anyone in social selling who wants to up level their business and find business partners to lock arms with on LinkedIn. I offer group coaching courses and one on one consult coaching to help social sellers (by application only) 10X their business the right way and professionally.

What’s been the biggest surprise about your recent journey? I had no idea when I started on this journey with Isagenix that my unique recruiting strategies for business builders on LinkedIn for my Network Marketing company would be a coaching service so many other social sellers would want to learn. But my mind was open to it and I wasn’t afraid to take the risk and offer it because I’d already taken a huge leap of faith with Isagenix and it worked out, so then I was ready to take another leap of faith!

What is/was your biggest fear and how did you face it? My biggest fear was my own ego and what others would think of me when I walked away form my sexy title and fancy job with my big degree to become a professional network marketer. I had already matched my corporate salary with my Isagenix income, but stayed in my 9-5 for a year because of fear of what others would think. It took me hiring and incredible life coach to help me retrain my brain, redefine who I was, breath through fear, lean on faith and jump to the other side of entrepreneurship completely.

When I finally realized I needed to live my life for what made my family and me happy, not for fear of what others thought….well that’s when everything changed for me and I realized going first and being unapologetic about it has inspired so many others within my network to to the same. I realize now that others needed me to be brave, go first, do a complete

What is your response to failure? If you aren’t failing you aren’t trying hard enough!!! I pick myself up, do an after-action review and move forward. If you're in easy mode you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough.

Failures aren’t failures at all. They are an opportunity to learn and grow.

Describe a time when you collaborated or an ongoing collaboration. I am in constant collaboration with other entrepreneurs. I’m in a millionaires’ society loaded with female entrepreneurs, all of us aiming for 1 Million annually in the next 2 years. We support each other, trade off services, coach each others teams where we see fit etc. There are too many humans in this world to worry about competition. We get much further asking ourselves, “How can I add value?”

If you aren't having fun in life and enjoying what you’re doing, you're doing it wrong. We all have unique, incredible talents and if we hone in on them, provide value to others with our talents and monetize it…. we become happy humans. We’ve got this one life to live, thrive, make impact, provide value and show up as the best versions of ourselves.

We should all be chasing our dreams.

What would you say to a woman in pharmacy who can’t figure out “the how” to do what she dreams of doing? Get back to your roots of what you are passionate about and what type of balance do you want in your life? Is it the job or the hours that are killing you? I have a lot of healthcare professionals on my network marketing team that loved their careers, just not the number of hours. We’ve been able to create a sizable secondary income stream for them that has allowed them to scale back their hours and have more balance. If it’s the career path you are unhappy with, hire a coach to help you!

Don’t go it alone!!!

What would you say to a woman who fears stepping out in faith? This question can get real deep real fast. It’s a tough one. We lose faith and develop more practicality the older we get. It’s actually been proven scientifically that the older we get the more “practical” matter in the brain is used in decision making. It’s unfortunate. It’s why my son knows he can be a pro athlete, a fire fighter and a veterinarian but the average adult wouldn’t dare make a statement like that. But the reality is, those with the biggest dreams and biggest faith have the wildest success. Others stand like miserable cows in the rain, not moving b/c “it is what it is” Faith actually propels you forward. Think about it. When is the last time you jumped forward at an opportunity, proclaimed it with a bridge on fire behind you?

That’s what I did. I came out publicly on the most professional platform that I was dropping my MSL director role and professionalizing social selling. I knew many would balk at my move, talk behind my back and question my sanity. At that point there was no turning back. The bridge was on fire. The output? Well of course then I was on a mission to be extremely successful. My unquestionable faith in where I was heading gave others in my network the permission to dream again to. This was not only driving my success, but driving the success of others and leading to a massive wave of dreamers and faith chasers.

What would you say to a woman considering hiring a coach? I always have a coach. I am a firm believer the only way to raise your lid is to hire someone who has a higher lid than you (John Maxwell reference). My two coaches I have hired over the past 2 years have been instrumental in my mental shift from corporate professional to entrepreneur and now scaling massive coaching business to drive evermore value to more entrepreneurs. I would not have had the skills or the “know how” to go it alone.

Worth EVERY penny!

What’s next for you and/or your business? I’m currently scaling my LinkedIn Bootcamp for entrepreneurs which has been such a fun project and I am in the works with creating a 6 figure Side Hustle 6 week bootcamp, which is for training on creating a step by step, turn key network marketing business. I find that many are interested in the passive income of network marketing but are at a loss of the “how” so I’ve been building out a 6 week bootcamp that trains folks the basics on growing a scaling a network marketing business that is duplicatable Where can we find you to further connect?

Dr. Kimber Boothe Doing More with More Share your story: I am a pharmacist, healthcare leader, and entrepreneur. I help pharmacists strategically advocate for roles and resources to advance practice and accelerate joyful engaging careers. I have had an enjoyable career path working in multiple healthcare settings from community pharmacy, hospital/health systems, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Upon completion of my residency training, I worked as a Cardiology/Critical Care pharmacist and specialist in an academic health system. I love health systems as a practice site due to the collaboration and began working on my Masters in Healthcare Administration (MHA) as part of my development path to Director of Pharmacy. I took a slight detour or side step on the career jungle gym to work in the pharmaceutical industry. Much of my business and leadership acumen I credit to the ten years that I spent there. I had multiple progressive opportunities working in pharma through Medical Science Liaison; Deputy Director of Medical Affairs for Phase IV, Investigator Sponsored Studies, Educational Grants, and Publications; and Director of Medical Science Liaisons. I enjoyed my time in industry but was eager to get back to more direct healthcare leadership and use my connector abilities to expand the role of the pharmacy.

As an Intrapreneur and health system pharmacy leader I added over 100 pharmacy positions at two different health systems in the past 3 years. I have accomplished this through innovative strategic planning and demonstrating to senior leadership and providers the value of pharmacy. The added services range from Transitions of Care pharmacists and technicians, Ambulatory Care Clinic - Primary Care and Specialty positions to acute care clinical and technology enhancements.

My entrepreneurial path began five years ago when I was working with an executive coach to evaluate my purpose and passions. At that time, I formed the Kimber Boothe Group, LLC as a “side hustle” for online education and coaching to support current and aspiring leaders. People often sought me out to support their career development plans and I saw a gap in people’s ability to connect the dots and excel beyond their clinical knowledge. The first programs I created were called Connector 101 and Connector Academy.

Two years ago, while attending the Medipreneurs Summit, I was inspired by the presenters who asked the entrepreneurs to identify their business purpose by thinking about ‘what breaks your heart’ and what problems can you solve. What breaks my heart is the extent of poor medication outcomes and errors. The 43

problem is that pharmacists are underutilized and I want to solve this by supporting the justification of more positions. I made the decision then to refocus my programs to directly support pharmacists to share my personal successes and passion for pharmacy.

I am so grateful that my Dad encouraged me to pursue pharmacy as a career because it has granted me diverse opportunities, many ways to help people, and have work life balance. He read a U.S News and World Report that indicated that Pharmacist was a top career for the next decades. I know there are concerns about the status or our profession today, but I truly believe pharmacy can be a wonderful career.

My Vision is that there will be no preventable medication errors and patients will have positive medication outcomes. My mission is to expand the role of the pharmacist as an integral member of the multidisciplinary care team as the accountable medication expert. My motto is "Pharmacy Can do More with More" and I believe we can increase the demand for pharmacists.

Describe what you are building: I have built out four main components of my business to support pharmacists based on input from stakeholders and from the industry. I serve our profession by providing

courses, coaching, consulting, and speaking on strategic & innovative pharmacy leadership.

Pharmovation® Course: is a facilitated online implementation program that not only shows you exactly what to do to accelerate your career, advocate for resources, but ultimately how to advance pharmacy practice to bring joy to your work and improve patient outcomes. I teach pharmacists to be bold and think innovatively to have a bigger career and help more patients.

Connector Coaching™: I provide 1:1 coaching with personalized programs to help you get with clear direction and confidence for any stage of your career. I am becoming a certified coach to expand my coaching skills to support clients.

Consulting: I provide consulting to health systems with onsite and virtual support to help connect the dots from strategy to execution to advance pharmacy practice. I am available to help organizations as an independent contractor for short and long-term needs. My main areas of focus and expertise are: Pharmacy Enterprise Optimization, Innovation, Strategic Plans, Business Plan, and Project Plans.

Speaking: I am available for small and large audiences on a topic of your needs or on one of my keynote presentations.

collaborative network of positive, growth minded, questioning dreamers who have challenged, supported, and encouraged me. Thank you!

What is/was your biggest fear and how did you face/address it? My biggest fear is what other people will think of me as I pursue and grow my business.

Some of this is the imposter syndrome sneaking in with a negative voice that I need to address and move beyond. Working with my own coach definitely helps with this. Every day I just remind myself that I cannot achieve my mission and vision without putting myself out there and I cannot make everyone happy.

What is your response to failure? We cannot be afraid of failure as it will slow us down from decisively moving forward. My goal is to fail fast and learn from it. A term that is used to describe this is “Fail Forward”. In his book, John Maxwell, describes Failing Forward as Turning Mistakes Into Stepping Stones for Success. Failure can teach us invaluable lessons and we should accept the failure, rise above it, and learn about ourselves and grow.

COLLABORATION: What is your view on collaboration (vs. competition). Describe a time when you collaborated or an ongoing collaboration

I often talk about the importance of “connecting the dots” such as from mission to execution and I call myself a “connector”. A connector is an expert at connecting and uniting people, knowledge, and resources and their success stems from bringing a level of energy and clarity for themselves and others.

Collaboration is a lot about making connections.

Recently Erica Dhawan coined the term Connectional Intelligence (CxQ) “is the capability to consistently deliver breakthrough innovation and results by harnessing the value of relationships and networks” Collaboration and building relationships with the multidisciplinary teams and our patients is critical as we advance pharmacy practice to optimize medication safety and outcomes. As a healthcare leader, I have prioritized collaborating and building relationships through a diverse networking plan, involvement of key stakeholders in strategic planning, and participation in multi-professional organizations such as the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

A fun example of collaboration I participated in was a healthcare hackathon which is a focused event of multidisciplinary team to come up with rapid, clever and even unexpected solutions to important challenges. The challenge we were focused on was improving patient experience and our collaboration led to the winning idea to improve neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).

What does it mean to lead yourself/your own company? I have always believed that you are in responsible for your own destiny. This is something that my mother instilled in me - develop yourself and no one can take that away from you. You cannot expect others to care as much as you do about your passion and vision.

What would you say to a woman who is unhappy in her current pharmacy role? Breathe and reflect. I think it is important to explore why they are not happy in their role. I often refer to Dan Pink’s principles of Drive to understand job engagement – Autonomy, Master, and Purpose.

Self-reflection and situational analysis will allow perspective, uncover the reason, and guide the next steps. Here are some questions I would ask: What are you passionate about? What are your favorite competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities)? What are your favorite activities/tasks? What type of work do you like? When do you feel you are at your best?

If these answers don’t describe her current role, then she should consider how she could adapt her current role or begin a transition path to a new role.

What would you say to a woman in pharmacy who can’t figure out “the how” to do what she dreams of doing? One of my business coaches, Marie Forleo, says “Everything is Figuroutable”. The first step is optimizing your mindset and surrounding yourself with a diverse team of supporters.

What would you say to a woman considering hiring a coach? Just do it! A comprehensive professional development plan includes Education/Courses, Coaching/Mentoring, and On-The-Job Experiences.

A mentor and coach each play a unique role is supporting your development. A coach provides a more formal relationship where they will be your cheerleader and help you achieve what you don’t even know is possible.

What’s next for you and/or your business?

My goal for 2020 is to support the creation of at least 25 new pharmacist positions to advance pharmacy practice and improve medication outcomes. I plan to do this by increasing the number of people I am supporting through my program Pharmovation, consulting clients, and 1:1 coaching. I am also opening myself up to more speaking opportunities to share the bold message of “Pharmacy Can do More with More™” and publishing my book. We really can increase the demand for pharmacists to fill the unmet medical needs. Let’s do this!
