Pittsburgh Public Theater: Public Works' Twelfth Night

Page 1

Letter from the Artistic Director

Dear neighbors,

In his first program note for Pittsburgh Public Theater’s inaugural production, Founding Director Ben Shaktman reflected on the single most powerful ingredient in live theater: participation. From artists and audiences to sponsors and supporters, participation is what has carried this theater through fifty luminous years of world-class work.

Our Twelfth Night is a bold, joyful embodiment of that idea. On our stage today, you’ll see a cross section of Pittsburgh — dozens of diverse, dynamic, talented people from every corner of our city. This production is a living testament to what is possible when we come together with a shared goal and generous spirit. When everyone has what they need to show up fully. When we treat our differences as strengths and make space for the creative spark each of us carries, no matter our age, background, or experience.

Like all beautiful things, the true magic of this production lives beneath the surface. It lives in the long rehearsals and the shared meals, in the laughter and the grief, in the impromptu dance parties and the quiet acts of care. It lives in the hands of the many, many staff and volunteers who welcomed and fed and looked after us. It lives in the belief of supporters like the RK Mellon Foundation, who dared to dream with us. And it lives in the parents, caregivers, teachers, and friends who encouraged us, gave us rides, folded our laundry, and held down the fort so we could stay late and finish our work together.

This is Participation.

This is Pittsburgh.

This is the Public.

This is Love.

Thank you for being here today—and for seven unforgettable years as your artistic director. This show, this theater, this city has filled my heart with song and reminded me why theater is the best way I know to participate in something bigger than myself. Inside these walls, we practice the world we want to live in, just and joyful.

Play on,

Pittsburgh Public Theater
