For Christmas dinner, sometimes my mother would cook a Cornish hen for each member of our family. We would delight in these tiny individual feasts, and inevitably we would line our little roasts up in a Rockettes kickline for a command performance of Jingle Bell Rock. One year, my brother Adam received a ventriloquist’s dummy as an early gift and named him Mikey. The theme of that Christmas dinner was Watch Out, Mikey Bites. My mother loved the holidays so much, she would extend them into January for Three Kings Day, when my father’s tradition was to hide rare coins under our dinner plates and wow us with his appetite for Gefilte fish.
This year, I am delighted to welcome you into the Parker’s holiday traditions of tree shopping, succulent turkey breasts, friendly neighborhood dog dares and, of course, very special prizes.
In the making of this production, we have crafted some new traditions (will my holiday ever be complete without an inflatable leg lamp again?) and welcomed some new members into our Pittsburgh Public Theater family. Director Michael Berresse has gifted us magnificent staging, expert musicality, and unbelievable heart in this production; he also became a dear friend to both The Public and to me as we imagined what this show could be. And of course Adjoa, Charlie, Colin, Eamonn, Jude, Nikolai, Sebastian, Suraya, Will, and Zora have made this production a singularly joyous celebration. There is nothing like hearing laughter ring through a house whether from family giggling around the tree on Christmas morning or from young artists guffawing through the hallways of The O’Reilly during a rehearsal break.
I have so much gratitude this year for good friends, sweet family, a full year of beautiful stories on our stage, and an incredible community of artists and audience members to share them with. From our Public family to yours, we wish you a happy holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you all in the bright new year.
Onward, Marya
Pittsburgh Public Theater is immensely grateful for the support it receives through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
On behalf of our several thousand employees in PNC’s Southwestern Pennsylvania Market, we are delighted to support The Public as Presenting Sponsor for this iconic holiday favorite, A Christmas Story: The Play. Based on the 1983 classic movie, this story will warm the hearts of audience members of all ages.
The arts have long been an economic engine for our city, bringing commerce and vibrancy to Downtown Pittsburgh. PNC commends Pittsburgh Public Theater for its extraordinary programming on the stage and in the community.
Thank you for supporting live theater in the Cultural District and...
