Nishimachi Board of Directors
Chris Hathaway ’90
Chairperson, Board of Directors 2024 - 2025

IT WAS AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR for Nishimachi, marked by both growth and renewal. We ended the 2024–2025 school year with record enrollment, a powerful affirmation of the school’s enduring reputation for excellence and community. At the same time, we invested in the future of our youngest learners with key renovations to our Kindergarten building, complete with new furniture designed to spark curiosity and creativity. On the main campus, children now benefit from a revitalized playground and resurfaced courtyard, spaces that not only enhance safety but also enrich daily life and play.
None of this would have been possible without the generosity and commitment of the Nishimachi community. Your donations directly fueled these improvements, ensuring that every child who walks through our gate has access to the very best environment in which to learn, grow, and thrive. On behalf of the Board, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your continued support of our mission and our students.
Sincerely,

Chris Hathaway ’90, Yoko Ito, Noriko Igarashi, Karen O’Neill ’78, Denise Miura, Ben Ferguson, Elizabeth Kano, Tokuya Sano ’86.
Absent: Simon Gerovich ’92, Michiyo Ikenaga, and Allan Smith.

HONORING A REMARKABLE LEGACY
A Joyful Celebration of 75 Years of Nishimachi History
Karen O’Neill ’78 Head of School

THE 2024–25 ACADEMIC YEAR WAS A MILESTONE IN EVERY SENSE: Nishimachi International School celebrated its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1949 by Miss Tané Matsukata, Nishimachi has grown from four students in a single house to a global community of learners. This anniversary year reminded us of our roots and reaffirmed our shared commitment to global citizenship and intercultural learning as guiding values for today and tomorrow.
A COMMUNITY GATHERS
Our anniversary dinner brought together parents, alumni, faculty, and friends in a dazzling evening of community pride. We were honored by the presence of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado, who reflected warmly on Nishimachi’s history, “I offer, on behalf of you all, our thanks to Tané Matsukata for the wonderful legacy she has left us.” Families across generations came together to celebrate our story. To mark the occasion, Nishimachi unveiled 75 limited-edition anniversary prints of the Matsukata House by artist Taika Kinoshita. These prints, offered for sale to commemorate the year, symbolized both the heritage of our campus and the iconic architecture of the Matsukata House.
THE JOYS OF READING
Reading has always been central to the ethos of our school. From the first library in the Matsukata House to the Yashiro Media Center today, books have shaped the lives of our students. As part of our anniversary, we celebrated the Joy of Reading with visits from acclaimed authors Neal Shusterman, Zanni Louise, and Debbi Michiko Florence.
For students, these visits made literature come alive. One middle schooler reflected after a workshop with Shusterman, “There are some things that are hard about writing, but I think those obstacles are still fun.” A teacher added, “Having Neal speak with our middle schoolers brought an immediacy we didn’t have before. They could see what a writer looks like, and what they do every day.”
Debbi Michiko Florence, author of the Jasmine Toguchi series, later shared, “It was pure joy all the way! An important reminder of why I write the books I do - stories matter to readers!”
TRADITIONS RENEWED
Family and alumni activities - from taiko and shodō to ikebana and pottery - allowed guests to reconnect with traditions, old and new. Rain may have brought people indoors, but the energy was infectious, especially as students and alumni stamped calligraphy works with a special 75th anniversary seal, now preserved in the Matsukata House Museum. One alumna summed up the spirit of the weekend; “The kindness that I remember is still here. I’ve been to many schools, but Nishimachi is the one place where that feeling never faded.”
A NEW PLAYGROUND AND A NEW KITCHEN
Capping off our anniversary year was the installation of a brand-new playground in the central courtyard of our main campus, along with a newly equipped kitchen at Kazuno. Teachers and students collaborated in designing the playground, sketching ideas and reviewing options before a final structure was chosen and installed. At Kazuno camp, our facilities team and teachers worked together to identify needed improvements, resulting in a new induction stove and modern appliances. These upgrades, completed at the end of the school year, will make future camp experiences even more memorable. Plans are already underway for additional exterior improvements in the coming year.

LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD
Our 75th anniversary year was more than a celebration - it was a bridge between the past and the future. From the voices of students and alumni to the lasting legacy of Miss Matsukata, every moment reminded us of the strength of our community and the promise of what lies ahead. Nishimachi enters its next chapter with gratitude for the generations who built our school, pride in the spirit that sustains it today, and confidence that the values of global citizenship, compassion, and curiosity will guide us for decades to come.

FUNDRAISING MESSAGE
ANNUAL GIVING
IN OUR 75TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR, the Nishimachi community came together to celebrate the school’s lasting impact and to ensure its bright future. Thanks to your generosity, we raised an outstanding 97.6 million yen in support of our students. We are deeply grateful to the many donors—222 in total—who made this possible. We also extend our special thanks to TNK for once again contributing more than 8 million yen toward this effort.
Our Annual Giving Program encompasses a variety of funds, including the unrestricted Annual Fund, the Outreach Scholarship Program, the 75th Anniversary Fund, and our newly launched Nishimachi Forever Fund. In addition, the Endowment Fund continues to grow through generous contributions to its various designations. Together, these gifts sustain our mission: to develop learners and leaders who know, care, and take action to bring value to others and to make a positive impact on the world.
Your support enables us to provide an exceptional education that goes beyond academics to nurture character development, both inside and outside the classroom. It also equips our students with essential 21st-century skills, preparing them to thrive in a rapidly changing world. On behalf of our students, faculty, and community, thank you for your generosity and for ensuring that Nishimachi’s legacy of excellence continues for generations to come.
Sincerely,

Mary Margaret Mallat Director of Advancement

ANNUAL FUND
• Added features to enhance the new playground project FUNDRAISING
THIS YEAR, THE ANNUAL FUND RECEIVED ¥44.5 MILLION, providing essential support for the programs and initiatives that tuition alone cannot cover. While this represents a decrease from last year’s total, the continued generosity of our alumni, alumni parents, current parents, faculty, staff, and corporate partners reflects a deep commitment to Nishimachi and our mission.
Support from the Corporate Contribution Program (CCP) also showed a decline this year, with contributions totaling ¥2.4 million, reflecting a smaller number of participating companies. Even so, the combined generosity of individuals and corporations continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and in the strength of our school.
One of the unique aspects of the Annual Fund is the trust donors place in Nishimachi, giving the school the flexibility to direct funds where they are most needed. This support strengthens our ability to offer an exceptional education— grounded in academic excellence, character development, and future-ready skills.

OUTREACH SCHOLARSHIP
IN THE PAST YEAR, THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY ACHIEVED a significant fundraising milestone, securing a total of ¥32.4 million for the Outreach Scholarship Program. This remarkable 100% increase reflects not only the strength of our community’s commitment, but also the transformative power of an exceptional donation that has had an immediate and lasting impact.
The funds raised have directly benefited a wide range of students and their families, while also enhancing experiences available to the entire school community. The increased resources have allowed us to broaden access, extend opportunities, and ensure that the impact of philanthropy is felt across the school.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all contributors for their support, including all who participated in our 12th Annual Walkathon to raise awareness and support for this special scholarship program. The outcomes of this year’s fundraising efforts highlight both the generosity of our community and the tangible difference such support continues to make in advancing the mission of the school.
“I would like to thank the Outreach Scholarship Program from the bottom of my heart. Outreach is what made Nishimachi possible for my family. I feel that no other experience could top my Nishimachi journey.”
2022 Outreach Scholarship Recipient
KPASS baseball league champions Spring 2025.
FUNDRAISING MESSAGE
75th ANNIVERSARY FUND
WE ARE DEEPLY GRATEFUL to our Nishimachi community whose generosity made our 75th Anniversary celebration possible. Together, you helped raise more than ¥14 million over the past two years. These contributions allowed us to host a full and meaningful celebration—without drawing from tuition funds— ensuring that our current students’ learning remained at the center while we honored our school’s remarkable history. Because of your support, we were able to welcome our community back to Nishimachi with warmth and joy. From revisiting classrooms and gathering on campus, to returning to Kazuno and sharing stories that span decades, the Anniversary weekend was filled with opportunities to reconnect and celebrate our shared
legacy. Importantly, your generosity also enabled us to keep the cost of events manageable, opening the doors for many more families, alumni, and friends to join at least one part of the festivities.
What made this celebration so special was not only looking back at how far we’ve come—from four students to a thriving community of thousands—but also looking ahead with excitement and hope. Thank you for making this milestone possible and for strengthening the bonds that carry Nishimachi into the future.

FUNDRAISING MESSAGE
NISHIMACHI FOREVER FUND
FROM LONG-STANDING CUSTOMS TO NEW INITIATIVES
, our community continually finds ways to honor the past while embracing the future. In the 2024-2025 school year, we launched the Nishimachi Forever Fund, a new initiative dedicated to sustaining the experiences that bind generations of alumni together.
This fund helps ensure that beloved traditions such as Kazuno, Ski Trips, and Sports Days remain part of the Nishimachi journey, even as the costs of experiential learning continue to rise. While the fund is still in its early stages, the gifts we received this year were deeply appreciated. Each contribution makes a real difference in carrying forward our school’s tradition of hands-on, inquiry-based learning.
Just as Ski Trip and Kazuno have helped generations of students build resilience and confidence, the Forever Fund allows us to continue creating opportunities that nurture curiosity, collaboration, and the sense of belonging that lies at the heart of a Nishimachi education.
The deep sense of belonging we foster, the respect we show one another, and our shared commitment to the mission is what binds us together across generations.

CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM
THE CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM is designed to secure financial contributions from foreign corporations, with the aim of maintaining and enhancing international education. While approved in 1978 for one school, today it is offered by a number of highly regarded and accredited international schools in Japan.
Scholarships are a cornerstone of the program and are granted to the children of foreign nationals, whose parents are employed by international companies. Nishimachi is able to receive annual donations that exceed what is required to fund the corporate scholarships and apply the remainder as a donation to our annual giving program. In 2024–2025, CCP annual support totalled ¥2.4 million from 4 participating companies.

MATCHING GIFTS
NISHIMACHI WAS FORTUNATE to receive matching funds from four companies during the 2024–25 school year. We thank the companies listed here, and their employees whose gifts were matched, for their generous support of our school.
More than 950 U.S. companies have matching gift programs. To find out if your company or your spouse’s company has a program, please check with your human resources department. Goldman, Sachs & Co.

THE 2024–2025 SCHOOL YEAR MARKED a milestone as Nishimachi celebrated its 75th anniversary. TNK was proud to support the school during this memorable year with initiatives that strengthened community ties and enriched student life.
Our fundraising opened new opportunities for learning and connection. Guided by the grants process, programs like the Joy of Reading were made possible, giving students the chance to meet renowned authors and explore the power of literature and storytelling. The campus was also enhanced with a new scoreboard
in the gymnasium and courtyard lighting that adds excitement to sports games and school events.
This year, 14 parent-led committees organized more than 20 cultural, educational, and social gatherings that brought the community together. These included the Welcome Back Party, Food Fair, Omochitsuki, Diamond Jubilee-themed Gala, STEAM Fair, International Day, the family ski trip, the 75th anniversary quilt, book reading initiatives, and the staff appreciation lunch, all celebrating the traditions and experiences that make Nishimachi such a close-knit community.

Beyond organizing events, committees managed the website and welcomed new families, helping events run smoothly and ensuring everyone felt included and connected. TNK’s efforts also extended outside the school, with programs like the Santa Project, which shared joy with the wider local community.
These achievements were made possible by the generosity, creativity, and hard work of our committee chairs and parent volunteers, together with our close partnership with the school. I was honored to serve as TNK President alongside the dedicated executive board members – Adrianne Scheffers, Mun Yoshihara, Cindy Atwood, Sarah Neff, Kun Du, and Yukiko Okayama and I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and enthusiasm to make this year so special.

THE 2024–2025 SCHOOL YEAR WAS a remarkable one for the Nishimachi community, marked by the celebration of the school’s 75th Anniversary. Alumni from across the globe returned to Tokyo to share in these events, reconnecting with classmates, faculty, and friends. At the Anniversary Dinner, Nishimachi-Kai was honored to bring greetings on behalf of all the alumni, a moment that underscored the strong and enduring ties that connect us all to Nishimachi.
cooked by our own graduate and her husband. Earlier in the fall, the Alumni Café at the 57th Annual Food Fair once again served wine, coffee and baked goods, welcoming alumni of many generations to reconnect and share their Nishimachi memories.
In addition to the anniversary celebrations, NishimachiKai continued its yearly traditions. The Annual June BBQ provided a wonderful opportunity for graduates and their families to gather on campus to enjoy a delicious BBQ
We extend our sincere appreciation to all who participated in these events and to the many alumni who continue to support the school. The dedication of our alumni community ensures that the spirit of
remains strong as we look ahead to the years to come.

WAYS TO GIVE
WHEN YOU SUPPORT NISHIMACHI, YOU ARE NOT ONLY HELPING the children who fill our classrooms today—you are also ensuring that generations of children to come will have the same opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive here. For more than 75 years, Nishimachi has been a place where international children find a community, receive an exceptional education, and build memories that last a lifetime. Those of us who have benefited from this experience—whether as students, parents, or faculty/ staff—carry a special responsibility to pass it on.
Every gift truly matters. A single contribution, when joined with those of other families, becomes something powerful. Whether large or small, your gift helps sustain the Nishimachi spirit and allows the school to continue giving children the experiences that have meant so much to us all. By participating, and by encouraging others to do the same, you help ensure that this legacy endures.
We gratefully accept gifts by credit card, bank transfer, or check in both Japanese yen and U.S. dollars. If you have already given, we thank you deeply. If not, we warmly invite you to join us in supporting Nishimachi—your generosity will make a lasting difference.
