RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION Recruiting and retaining top-quality educators has become increasingly challenging due to a global teacher shortage and the unique difficulties of attracting teachers to Japan.

Despite the strong reputation of both Japan and our school, the weakening yen, along with competitive benefits and salaries offered by other institutions, has made this process more difficult. However, we recognize that our teachers are the cornerstone of our mission.

This year, I am pleased to announce that we implemented a 5% salary increase for all faculty and staff. Additionally, we created new roles and stipend positions, such as literacy coaches and Inquiry coaches, to offer career advancement opportunities within our school. We also increased our professional learning budget, allowing more faculty members to attend conferences like EARCOS, and inviting trainers to Japan to participate in team training sessions. Successful fundraising for our Annual Fund played a crucial role in making these advancements possible while ensuring we maintain a careful watch over our budget.

75th ANNIVERSARY PREPARATIONS As we embrace the milestone of our 75th anniversary, our Advancement team, together with our Learning Leadership team, have been diligently preparing a year-long celebration that reflects on all aspects of our school’s history and achievements. We have engaged a community member to help plan and execute a calendar of events, including speaker vetting, budgeting for visitors, and creating marketing materials.

This year, we experienced a four-fold increase in the number of alumni who visited our campus. Several of us took “field trips” down memory lane in our Matsukata House 8

Museum, and had the opportunity to cherish the many connections that were forged as a student, former parent, faculty member, or community member.

We look forward to hosting a significant number of visitors for our 75th anniversary and are excited to bring Nishimachi’s history into the classroom.

HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT Finally, our Board of Directors and the High School Steering Committee have been actively working on the development of a high school program for our community. Throughout the year, our Directors have engaged with parents to outline our progress and the potential opportunities ahead. While the development of a high school program remains a long-term goal, we are committed to continuing this work for the foreseeable future.

SUMMARY This year, our school has embraced a renewed sense of normalcy as we resumed many activities that make Nishimachi special. The return to a full schedule has seen our students thrive, taking ownership of their learning and engaging in a range of enriching experiences. In our first year of implementing our Strategic Plan, we have made significant strides in Inquiry Learning, supported by expert guidance and the introduction of new learning spaces like our MakerSpace.

We have also strengthened our commitment to well-being, introducing new health initiatives and ensuring our students receive comprehensive support.

Our efforts in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion have been bolstered with the creation of our first Inclusion and Belonging policy, laying the foundation for further progress next year.

Despite global challenges in teacher recruitment, we have successfully implemented a salary increase and expanded professional development opportunities for our faculty, thanks in part to a successful year of fundraising. As we look ahead to our 75th anniversary, preparations are well underway for a year-long celebration that will bring our school’s history to life. Additionally, our Board continues to explore the development of a high school program, engaging with our community to shape the future of our school.

ANNUAL GIVING NISHIMACHI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL’S Annual Giving Program continues to be a centerpiece of our community’s generosity and commitment. Each year, the program directly enhances the student experience and supports key initiatives that help advance the school’s mission. This year, we are proud to have raised ¥110 million, with donations from 257 members of our alumni, current parents, and broader school community. This level of participation was consistent with last year’s efforts, demonstrating the ongoing dedication of our supporters.

A notable highlight of this year’s campaign was a major donation of ¥30 million, which played a significant role in helping us reach a total comparable to last year’s ¥111 million. Contributors directed their donations to the Annual Fund, Outreach Scholarship Fund, 75th Anniversary Fund, Endowment, and various restricted programs, all of which ensure the continued growth and strength of our institution.

FUNDRAISING MESSAGE

ANNUAL FUND THE ANNUAL FUND SERVES as a primary focus of fundraising at Nishimachi International School, helping to support numerous initiatives that tuition alone cannot cover. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our alumni, alumni parents, current parents, faculty, staff, and corporate partners who contribute to this important effort.

One of the unique aspects of the Annual Fund is the trust donors place in the school, allowing us to direct funds where they are most needed. This flexibility enables us to strengthen many areas of our school’s program and maintain a high level of excellence.

This year, our fundraising maintained its overall success compared to last year. The Annual Fund achieved a record total of ¥73.9 million, surpassing the previous year’s ¥70 million. However, support from our Corporate Contribution Program (CCP) was lower, bringing in ¥5.9 million compared to ¥8.9 million last year, due to a smaller number of participating companies. Despite this, the combined total from the Annual Fund and CCP reached ¥79 million, matching last year’s

unrestricted donations. This continued generosity from our community is crucial to the success and sustainability of our school.

FUNDRAISING MESSAGE

OUTREACH SCHOLARSHIP NISHIMACHI’S OUTREACH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, launched in 2003–04, provides financial support to eligible students from diverse socioeconomic, racial, cultural, and geographic backgrounds. Our original aim, to enhance diversity within our school community, remains our guiding principle in both fundraising and program administration.

Our objective is to raise ¥16 million annually, ensuring continued support for deserving students. In 2023–2024 we raised ¥14.6 million for Outreach Scholarships. A combination of generous contributions from individual donors and community groups, both Tomo No Kai and Nishimachi-Kai, made this possible.

This year’s support has been exceptional, highlighting the generosity of our community, who recognize the program’s value and purpose.

Over 300 participants joined November’s Outreach Walkathon, showcasing a high level of community engagement, for our 11th year of the event.

We extend our deep gratitude to our donors, many of whom have consistently contributed to this program each year. We kindly request all members of the Nishimachi community to generously support the Outreach Scholarship Program in the upcoming months.

CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM

THE CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM is designed to secure financial contributions from foreign corporations, with the aim of maintaining and enhancing international education. While approved in 1978 for one school, today it is offered by a number of highly regarded and accredited international schools in Japan.

Scholarships are a cornerstone of the program and are granted to the children of foreign nationals, whose parents are employed by international companies. Nishimachi is able to receive annual donations that exceed what is required to fund the corporate scholarships and apply the remainder as a donation to our annual giving program. In 2023– 2024, CCP annual support totalled ¥5.9 million from 6 participating companies.
