Beginning in 2023-24, we will offer a K–9 Health program as a new scheduled course for all students. The social and emotional health and well-being of all students is now more important than ever and we felt that having a stand-alone curriculum with a new Health teacher working alongside our counselors and our advisors was an important step for us.

STRATEGIC INTENTS Faculty and staff worked hard this year to define the scope of work as outlined by our new Strategic Plan. All groups met throughout the year to define targets, goals and outcomes over the next three years. In this year’s annual report, I share the four Strategic Intents that are the focus of our efforts: 1. Nishimachi Way This year, the Nishimachi Way internal review of learning and teaching sought to research and define the current and aspirational pedagogical principles of learning and teaching.

Faculty and staff conducted internal research from each grade level and data from each curricular area was collated and analysed. It was then compared and aligned with external academic, scientific curricular research, market intelligence, and trends in international education. The research helped us identify our core strengths and aspirations.

At Nishimachi, learning is inquiry driven, transdisciplinary, personalized, and student led through real world experiences. Our program fosters curiosity and creativity, and embraces diversity of thought while recognizing the importance of multilingualism and special identities. We nurture character development and promote social engagement through the Nishimachi Learner Expectations.

Over the next year, the focus of our work will be to narrow these principles further and engage in deep dives as a faculty and staff to improve learning outcomes for all students.

2. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Together with a dedicated group of faculty and staff, and led by our three faculty members, Marcella Catania, Kristina Reynolds, and Dr. Kalpana Rao, Nishimachi spent much of our year learning about ourselves as a community, discussing our special identities, and training ourselves with guidance from field experts.

for how to move forward as a community and create a framework through which we can build a global lens of understanding. This work will continue through the next two years as we continue to refine our goal toward creating an organization wide diversity, equity and inclusion policy.

Enhance Long Term Sustainability and Risk Management: Part A and B Part A: Optimal Level of Enrollment A committee of faculty, staff, and administrators met throughout the year to conduct an analysis of enrollment management at Nishimachi. Leveraging extensive data from the Admissions Office, the committee examined enrollment policies, financial models, class size, learning outcomes, along with the impact of school-wide facilities and daily scheduling on enrollment, in an attempt to identify risks and develop strategies to minimize them. The committee reached a recommendation to enroll between 460 and 480 students at Nishimachi each year. Specific enrollment targets should be adjusted annually, within this range, according to budgetary requests from administrators and school-wide priorities set by the Board of Directors.

SUMMARY On reflection, the 2022-23 school year was one filled with the happy faces of children. Our community came together once again and helped us build connection despite global headwinds. We are already looking forward and thinking about life beyond global pandemics as the Japanese government lowers restrictions and are enthusiastically moving forward with our plans for next year. Through the generosity of so many families, your donations are making a difference and are allowing us to renovate our campus, build greater expertise among our faculty through professional development opportunities, and help us remain competitive in a weak yen environment. FUNDRAISING MESSAGE

ANNUAL GIVING THE NISHIMACHI COMMUNITY demonstrated a deep commitment to a culture of giving during the 2022-2023 school year. Fundraising totals exceeded expectations, in both restricted and unrestricted categories. Traditional solicitations and new fundraising initiatives prompted the entire community to give generously, raising over ¥111 million in donations.

Unrestricted donations to the Annual Fund surpassed last year by nearly ¥10 million, as contributions of ¥70.2 million were received during the 2022-2023 school year. An additional ¥8.9 million was contributed through the Corporate Contribution Program (CCP), bringing the total of unrestricted donations to ¥79.1 million.

We are especially grateful for the support received during Founder’s Month. A challenge campaign set in motion by a pledge of ¥10 million, prompted others to donate and raise an equal amount. The results were outstanding, as the community donated ¥14.7 million, thus unlocking the full amount of the original pledge, for a total of ¥24.7 million raised during Founder’s month.

The Outreach Scholarship Program has long been supported by the school community, and this year was no exception. Alumni and current families responded by raising a total of ¥18.1 million to be used for scholarships that bring even greater diversity to the school.

Tomo no Kai, our parents association, approved a ¥12.7 million grant to the school to complete Phase II of the Ushiba Memorial Gymnasium audio/visual project. We deeply appreciate the efforts of TNK to direct the proceeds of their fundraising efforts to the school through the grants program.

FUNDRAISING MESSAGE

ANNUAL FUND THE ANNUAL FUND IS a mainstay of fundraising at our school, since it pays for many initiatives which tuition alone cannot cover. We deeply appreciate the contributions of our many alumni, alumni parents, current parents, faculty, staff, and corporations, who give so generously. A unique aspect of these donations is the trust placed in the school by the donors, to use the funds where the school feels the greatest need exists. These donations help us to enhance excellence in many aspects of our school program.

We set a record for fundraising this year, through the generosity of our entire community. The Annual Fund reached ¥70.2 million, up from ¥62.9 million the previous year. Support from the Corporate Contribution Program of ¥8.9 million is an additional unrestricted donation. When combined with the Annual Fund receipts, Nishimachi received ¥79.1 million in unrestricted donations, up 10% from the previous school year.

OUTREACH SCHOLARSHIP NISHIMACHI’S OUTREACH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, launched in 2003-04, provides financial support to eligible students from diverse socioeconomic, racial, cultural, and geographic backgrounds. Our original aim, to enhance diversity within our school community, remains our guiding principle in both fundraising and program administration.

This year’s support has been exceptional, highlighting the generosity of our community, who recognize the program’s value and purpose.

Nearly 400 participants joined November’s Outreach Walkathon, showcasing a high level of community engagement, for our 10th year of the event.

Our objective is to raise ¥16 million annually, ensuring continued support for deserving students. In 2022-2023 we exceeded our expectations raising ¥18 million for Outreach Scholarships. A combination of generous contributions from individual donors and community groups — both Tomo no Kai and Nishimachi-Kai — made this possible.

We extend our deep gratitude to our donors, many of whom have consistently contributed to this program each year. We kindly request all members of the Nishimachi community to generously support the Outreach Scholarship Program in the upcoming months.

NISHIMACHI-KAI’S MISSION IS TO perpetuate Tané Matsukata’s vision for the school and to provide an opportunity for alumni to re-connect and engage with the Nishimachi community. During the 2022-2023 school year, Nishimachi-Kai was pleased to engage the community in two major events that furthered the group’s mission.

Food Fair 2022 was a huge success and our alumni café was a central meeting spot. As in the past, we ran the Nishimachi-Kai Café, a welcoming spot where everyone gathered. Many alumni stopped by to share a drink and chat, while purchasing treats and Nishimachi-Kai gear.

Delighted by the return of the traditional yakiniku-style menu and the opportunity to reconnect with classmates and former faculty, the crowd swelled to over 300 spirited guests — the largest crowd anyone can recall! The record-breaking attendance highlights our strong alumni community, motivated by friendships, traditions and a shared passion for the school.

The Outreach Scholarship Program has long been supported by Nishimachi-Kai and this year was no exception. November, 2022 saw many alumni families walking alongside current parents at the 10th Outreach Walkathon. A Nishimachi-Kai contribution was also made to the scholarship program, as we have done before, to support this valuable program dedicated to greater diversity in our Nishimachi community.
