DUDLEY VOTERS... I AM ASKING FOR YOUR VOTE!

LORI SMITH for Dudley Town Clerk

What's better than one cat? More cats! My name is Dexter and I'm a 5 year old house panther who couldn't be shy if I tried. I'm not afraid to ask you for attention and I love being the center of it! There's a good chance I'll follow you everywhere. I never get tired of playing, cuddling and watching your every move. Even though I'm the picture of purrfection all my own, my forever family needs to love my brother Otis (I call him Oats) too. He and I are peas in a pod! Oats is only 3 but he's twice my size and I'm STILL the protector! His fuzzy little soul is as gentle as his snow white fur, and he's got eyebrows that make him look grumpy all the time! But he's as full of love as I am, he just needs more reassurance. Once you get to know him though, he's an even better cuddler than I am. You get the best of both worlds with us... and we won't clash with your furniture!

TITANIC: The Ship And Her People

CHARLTON A special presentation of "Titanic: The Ship and her People" will take place at the Charlton Rider Tavern on Monday, June 10th at 7:00pm. The tavern is located at 225 Stafford Street in Charlton, MA. Thanks to the magic of Hollywood, the brief but legendary life and epic tragedy of the RMS Titanic is now known to just about anyone with more than a passing interest in the doomed ocean liner. Though the stories of Jack and Rose are fiction, the surroundings and circumstances of their passage on the most celebrated ship of all time were faithfully documented on film, to the extent that this cinematic experience ranks as one of the most-watched and awarded movies ever. And no wonder. From the moment of embarkation on her maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, the Titanic saga was and remains one of the most intriguing stories of modern history. Every aspect of her design, construction, engineering and appointment has been studied in great detail. The chronicle of her encounter with the iceberg, her sinking, the rescue of her passengers and blame for the tragedy has been debated for a century – with no end to the fascination in sight. The discovery of the ship’s wreckage by Dr. Robert Ballard more than two

decades ago, and the subsequent retrieval of artifacts from its vicinity have only heightened an already intense scrutiny of everything to do with this magnificent liner. It has been 107 years since the Titanic left Southampton, England, for New York City on its first and only voyage. As fascinating as the tale of this great ship is, so, too, are the stories of those whose lives became intertwined with the legendary vessel. To commemorate the loss of the Titanic and celebrate the heroism of those who sailed in her, the Charlton Historical Society will host a presentation by Lester Paquin and Lucy Allen of the Barre Historical Society on Monday evening, June 10, 2019 at 7 p.m. at The Rider Tavern in Charlton. Titled “Titanic: The Ship And Her People,” the illustrated talk is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served following the presentation. An illustrated narrative of the Titanic’s final voyage will be featured, including some facts and details not commonly known. A highlight of the presentation will be profiles of several of the ship’s passengers and their circumstances. Some are well-known and others have receded into history – but all share the common bond of being at one place, at one time, that forever defined their lives and legacies.

of ocean liners in general and the Titanic, Lusitania and Andrea Doria in particular. He is the administrator of the Barre Historical Society and the Chairman of Barre’s Historical Commission, and has recently prepared a program on the rescue of the Lipizzaner stallions at the end of World War II. Lucy Allen has worked for the City Manager’s Office in Worcester, and is an eminent genealogist and historical researcher who also serves as President of the Barre Museum Association.

Come to the Charlton Historical Society’s presentation on June 10 at the Historic Rider Tavern on Stafford Street and hear some fascinating stories about an incredible ship and those who sailed with her into history. And, even if you saw the movie, you will likely learn something about the Titanic and her people that you never knew before.

Lester Paquin has extensively studied and lectured on the subject

Make graduation day comfortable

Graduation day will arrive before many students have a chance to pause and reflect on their time as students. The pomp and circumstance are deeply rooted traditions passed down through academia. If only comfort was automatically built into the graduation equation. Most graduation ceremonies occur at the end of the school year when temperatures tend to be rather warm. For schools with large student bodies, the distribution of diplomas might take place outdoors on a football field or under a tent. Some ceremonies may take place in poorly ventilated auditoriums. That can make conditions less than comfortable for graduates. Attire also can make grads uncomfortable. Graduation caps and gowns can be cumbersome, especially the heavily robed and layered gowns that signify higher academia.

Finally, graduation ceremonies tend to be lengthy, which can only exacerbate any discomfort grads may feel. Discomfort need not dominate come graduation day. In fact, students can take various steps to ensure graduation day is as comfortable as possible. • Wear something lightweight. Layering a gown on top of heavy clothing can be a recipe for overheating. Dress accordingly for the weather that day and the venue. Remember, it’s always possible to add a layer. • Stick to sensible shoes. That short trek acrosss the stage to receive the diploma will be watched by hundreds in attendance and possibly recorded for posterity. Avoid slipups by wearing comfortable, flat shoes that are skid-resistant. • Bring some tissues along. Reactions and emotions can run high on graduation day. This day is a milestone, and a few tears may be shed. Have tissues handy to catch stray tears.
