If you attended ISM’s iris show on Memorial Day last year and enjoyed the profusion of beautiful irises, you will find many of those same irises at the sale. ISM members will be there to answer questions. There will a demonstration on dividing old iris clumps along with planting tips. A Friend In Need A Friend in Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, all-volunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/Maynard area. On Sunday, July 14, A Friend in Need will be at the ActonBoxborough Farmers Market. We invite you to stop by our booth and learn about our mission. We were contacted by an advocate for a gentleman with several severe health issues. He is living on a small income and became behind in his utility payments. While he is able to access other available resources, he was unable to meet his latest bill. A Friend in Need agreed to help towards that bill, giving him some breathing room. A woman now single and raising her young children was barely making ends meet on a low-wage job. She left to apply for something better paying, but the transition took longer than she expected and she found it difficult to meet her rent payment. A Friend in Need provided

funding to prevent eviction. A veteran who took time off from his job to deal with a critical family situation lost some wages. When the rent became due, he was unable to pay the entire amount. A Friend in Need provided the needed funds. Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100%

Ft. Devens Museum Speaker Discovering close ancestral ties to colonial Massachusetts led Ft. Devens Museum’s guest speaker for July, Mark Deuger, to study especially the story of King Philip’s War. Mark shares what he has learned in a talk on July 20th at the Museum, 94 Jackson Road, starting at 1 p.m. as the Museum continues to open its doors to the public each third Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In his youth Mark learned he was a descendent of John and Grace Fairbanks, who settled in Dedham in the 1630s,

and that two of his ancestors, Jonas and Joshua Fairbanks, were killed during the Nipmuc tribe’s raid on Lancaster during King Philip’s War. Residence in Massachusetts in the 1990s gave him the opportunity to explore his family history and that led to pinpointing this particular war, called also Metacom’s War or the first Indian war. In addition to studying many books and documents related to the war, he visited historic sites associated with the conflict. An Illinois native, Mark graduated from Monmouth College with a Bachelor’s degree in geology and an officer’s commission in the U.S. Army. His Army

action unlimited systems ahead of time can save you the headaches and cost of an emergency breakdown later,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Regular vehicle maintenance is always more convenient when you’re doing it on your own schedule. By taking a few easy preventive maintenance steps now, you can have more confidence when driving in severe winter weather.” The Car Care Council recommends this vehicle check: 1. Battery—Keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free. Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it is advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. 2. Antifreeze—Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however, as full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water. 3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important when driving on

icy or snow-covered roads. 4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem where you’ll be driving, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop. 5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30, as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Wiper Blades—Cold weather can affect the life of windshield wipers, making the rubber hard and brittle and increasing the potential for cracks. Wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield should be replaced. Some manufacturers offer special winter blades that have a rubber boot covering the arm assembly to keep snow and ice out. When changing the blades, have the windshield wiper system nozzles cleaned and adjusted if necessary, and check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir.

During the cold months, keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full as that decreases the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Finally, if you’re due for a tune-up, consider having it done soon. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Ground Breaking Ceremony United Church of Christ, Boxborough, is kicking off the next phase of its Open Doors Project, and you’re invited! The Open Doors project is the church’s initiative to create welcoming places for building community. This year, we are renovating our 1833 meeting house: making it more accessible and providing both large and small gathering spaces. Come join Senator Jamie Eldridge and other town officials for a groundbreaking ceremony on August 5 at 11:30 am at the church, 723 Massachusetts Avenue, Boxboro. The ceremony will be followed by luncheon in the Community Center, where you can learn more about the Open Doors project and the plans to use the new spaces. Ending The Tragedy Of ‘Family Fire’ (NAPSI)—On the battlefield, one of the greatest tragedies is “friendly fire,” and the military does everything in its power to avoid these incidents through rigorous training, constant communication, and a deadly serious focus on the safe use of weapons. All Americans would be wise to look to our military professionals as an example of how to solve the tragedy of “family fire” in this country. Nearly 3,000 kids are shot every year by guns that come from within our homes. While these tragedies are hard to think about, there is much we can do to keep our families safe. As a Marine Corps combat veteran and lifelong gun owner, I enjoy firearms and marksman-

action unlimited ship. Guns are a big part of military culture. Many of my civilian friends also enjoy shooting, and all of us are alarmed by the number of gun deaths each year in America. What is especially hard for me to understand are the preventable deaths caused by negligent gun owners who improperly store their firearms. Family fire rips apart families and shatters whole communities, and so much more can be done to stop it. We shouldn’t need legislation to know what’s sensible to keep our families and loved ones safe. Responsible gun owners realize that proper storage of weapons saves lives and it’s our duty to keep firearms out of the wrong hands. Can we agree it’s our job to do everything we can to keep kids safe? Ending “Family Fire” Eight kids are unintentionally shot by a gun every day. Since September 11, 2001, nearly 57,000 kids have been killed or injured by firearms. This is almost the same number as servicemembers who have been killed and wounded in action in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 17 years of war. Gun owners who don’t properly secure their weapons cause those incidents. As someone who has undergone extensive weapons and safety training while in the military, I’m shocked and

appalled that today there are 1.7 million American homes with kids living with unsecured, loaded guns. Each of these families is living a hair’s breadth away from tragedy. What Every Gun Owner Can Do Fortunately, unintentional shootings in the home are largely preventable through safe gun storage. Parents, veterans and all gun owners can do our part to keep families and communities safe. Here are some proven ways we can save lives: 1. Just as in the military, our guns should be unloaded when not in use and locked up in a safe, gun vault or storage case that’s inaccessible to kids. 2. Store ammunition in a secure location away from your firearms. 3. Ensure you also secure the combination or keys to your safe(s), vault(s) or case(s). 4. Teach kids firearm responsibility and safety. Guns are not toys. They are deadly weapons designed to stop beating hearts. If your kids see a gun lying around, teach them not to touch it and to tell an adult. 5. Kids should never use a gun without adult supervision. (If your child has friends visiting, it’s always best to get their parents’ permission first.) 6. If your child is visiting a friend’s home, ask the parent(s)

if they have guns in the home and how they are stored. 7. Never assume kids don’t know where guns are stored in the home. They always do. Hawaiian Plants For Good Health (NAPSI)—According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a growing body of scientific evidence suggests the air quality within homes and other buildings can be seriously more polluted than outdoor air, even in the largest and most industrialized cities. But there’s an easy way to protect yourself and your family.

The Problem Research indicates people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many, the risks to one’s health from exposure to indoor air pollution may be greater than the risk from outdoor air pollution. In addition, the CDC says, people most exposed to indoor air pollutants are often those most susceptible to their effects. Such groups include the young, the elderly and the chronically ill, especially those suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular diseases. What To Do When it comes to keeping your air breathable at home and at work, it really is rocket science. According to NASA researchers studying what it would take for humans to travel to other planets, you need at least one indoor plant for every 100 square feet. Plants naturally filter the air of chemicals and other toxins linked to health problems, such as headaches and eye irritation. For example, every 24 hours, plants remove up to 87 percent of indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that otherwise tend to get trapped inside today’s airtight, climate-controlled buildings. NASA’s research found plants purify the trapped air by pulling contaminants into the soil, where microorganisms convert VOCs into food for the plant. One NASA researcher, Dr. B. C. Wolverton, even went so far as to list the 50 plants best suited to purify your personal space. Lucky for lovers of the lush and lovely, 11 of these come from Hawaii. Hawaiian-grown,

and anxiety, and were released from the hospital sooner compared to people in rooms without plants. A Dutch study also discovered adding plants to the workplace decreases fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flulike symptoms, which was further confirmed by the Agricultural University of Norway. England’s Royal Agricultural University found that students were 70 percent more attentive when there are plants in the classroom. premium-quality tropical potted foliage and flowers offer an “Aloha Advantage”: They not only provide a beautiful, picturesque piece of paradise, but Hawaiian-grown plants also tend to be very difficult to kill and, therefore, require less overall maintenance and replacement costs. This is probably one of the main reasons designers throughout the nation choose Hawaiian plants so often. The Hawaiian Export Nursery Association (HENA) reports the 11 plants that make the health list are Rhapis Excelsa (Lady Palm), Chamaedorea Seifrizii (Bamboo Palm), Dracaena Janet Craig, Ficus “Alii” (“Alii” means “royal” in Hawaiian), Dracaena Fragrans (Corn Plant), Dracaena Warneckii, Dracaena Marginata (Dragon Tree), Norfolk Island Pine, Dendrobium Orchids, Anthurium, and Phalaenopsis Orchids. These and other hearty, pretty Hawaiian plants are available at major box stores and retailers such as Home Depot, Lowe’s and Costco, and nearby nurseries and garden centers. To ensure you’re purchasing a Hawaiiangrown plant, look for the unique lava rock soil, which is a main differentiator and reason these plants thrive and grow so healthfully. Further Flora Research Houseplants have also been shown to help your health, wealth and happiness in other ways. Researchers at Kansas State University found people in hospital rooms with plants request less pain medication, have lower heart rates and blood pressure, experience less fatigue

Staying Home? Make The Most Of A Staycation (NAPSI)—For a great vacation experience, travel is not required—you can make priceless family memories with a staycation. Staying at home saves time and budget for busy families. There are many ways to be a “local tourist” and enjoy an entertaining staycation that’s healthy and active. Dr. Sonali Ruder, spokesperson for the Blueberry Council (aka the Foodie Physician), offers this advice on crafting a staycation to remember: “Spending time together and keeping kids’ minds and bodies going are important for a meaningful staycation. It can be as simple as taking walks or going to the playground. Bad weather? Get crafty with an art

It’s fun for them, but they can also practice their math and motor skills and learn about healthy eating.” Savvy parents use all the tools at their disposal to keep kids busy and entertained during vacation season, and blueberries are here to help. They’re available—fresh or frozen—year-round. No muss, no fuss-just rinse and go. You can buy them by the boxful and eat them by the handful. Ideas for Staycation Fun Get the kids off the couch and into some entertaining activities. • Start your day by tossing blueberries into your oatmeal, or make a batch of Dr. Ruder’s Blueberry French Toast Muffins. • Invent your own scavenger hunt, indoors or outdoors. • Practice counting or making shapes with blueberries. • Explore “free days” at nearby museums. • Whip up blueberry lemonade for an afternoon tea party. • Picnic in the park or back-

yard with a basket of blueberries and healthy goodies. • Assemble pizzas on wholegrain English muffins—kids’ choice of toppings! Blueberry French Toast Muffins Serves 12 4 large eggs 1 cup milk, any type 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 teaspoons vanilla 12 ounces whole grain bread, cut into small pieces (about 6 cups) 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries Optional toppings: maple syrup, powdered sugar Preheat oven to 350° F. Whisk the eggs, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon and vanilla together in a large bowl. Add the bread and stir to combine well. Fold in the blueberries. Spray a 12-cup muffin pan with cooking spray. Remove from oven and cool. Serve muffins plain or top them with a little bit of maple syrup or powdered sugar. Blueberries are amazingly versatile and taste great on their own or in baked goods, kid-friendly blueberry slushies, or parentready blueberry bourbon sours. They complement a variety of flavors, cuisines and dishes. The Healthy Part Blueberries contain just 80 calories per cup, Dr. Ruder adds. They’re a good source of dietary fiber so you feel full longer, and they aid in digestion. They’re also a good source of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and helps protect cells from

Reducing Your Risk Of Heart Attack (NAPSI)—While death from heart attack is highest during the winter holidays, you can protect heart health with diet, exercise and taking prescribed medication. The Problem Juggling all the extra pressures of a busy holiday schedule can wreak havoc on your healthy habits, but it’s one of the most dangerous times to lower your guard. Research shows deaths from heart attacks peak during December and January. “Changes in diet and alcohol consumption; stress from family

saturday, july 13, 2019

interactions, strained finances, travel and entertaining; and even respiratory problems from burning wood are all possible reasons for the increase in heart attacks during the holidays,” explains John Osborne, M.D., Ph.D., a preventive cardiologist for State of the Heart Cardiology. A Solution If you’ve had a heart attack, it’s especially important to maintain a healthy diet, stick to an exercise plan and take medicines as prescribed. About 20 percent of heart attack survivors over the age of 45 will have another heart attack within five years of their first. “Making lifestyle changes

OFFICE SPACE You can budget one price for all your utilities, high speed internet, parking. No Long Term Contracts

can be difficult,” adds Osborne. “Many of my patients use mobile apps that provide education and electronic reminders to help stay focused on how to protect their heart health and minimize risks.” One such app is My Cardiac Coach, a free and easy-to-use mobile app developed by the American Heart Association that empowers people to take control of their heart health using interactive tools to learn about their condition, track medications and closely monitor any changes. One Man’s Story For example, Lex Roulston overhauled his diet and increased exercise after having a quintuple bypass surgery in 2001, since all five of his coronary arteries were blocked. Roulston said he “never thought about what he ate or worried about his health,” and that his bypass surgery “was a big wake-up call” to take his health seriously and protect his heart health. Roulston, now 84, relied on inperson resources through a cardiac care program following his bypass surgery, but said mobile tools such as My Cardiac Coach can provide the support, as well as access to medical information, that proved so crucial as he made significant lifestyle changes. “It’s just another tool to help you make a lifestyle change,” said Roulston, who, with his wife, funded the Lex and Eileen

Roulston Lifestyle Change Initiative and Lee County Support Network for Survivors and Caregivers to provide a local support network to people in Lee County, Fla. “Having the tools to support you makes it a lot easier to make changes, especially as you face challenges.” Learn More For further facts about My Cardiac Coach and to download the app for Apple or Android mobile devices, go to www. heart.org/MyCardiacCoach.

When It Comes To Stroke, It’s OK To Overreact (NAPSI)—Stroke affects more than 795,000 people in the United States every year.1 Also known as a “brain attack,” a stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen to the brain is blocked by plaque (acute ischemic stroke) or ruptures and bleeds (hemorrhagic stroke).2 If you suspect stroke, call 911 immediately. The saying “time is brain” references the importance of receiving immediate medical attention for a stroke before it starts affecting brain function. Stroke is serious; quick treatment can be the deciding factor between recovery and disability.2 How To Recognize Stroke Would you or your loved ones

action unlimited know what to do in the event of a stroke? It’s important to recognize all the ways in which stroke can present itself to be best prepared in the case of a medical emergency as the symptoms don’t always appear the same in every person. Many people may be familiar with the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke, but could you recognize all 10 signs? 1. Confusion 2. Difficulty Understanding 3. Dizziness 4. Loss of Balance 5. Numbness 6. Severe Headache 7. Trouble Speaking 8. Trouble Walking 9. Vision Changes 10. Weakness3 As with most symptoms, these are not unique to stroke but if they appear quickly and are out of the ordinary, they may indicate a serious condition that requires immediate attention. If you recognize any combination of these signs, it’s okay to “overreact.” Suspicion is enough reason to take action and call 911. Do not wait for symptoms to subside. The right care—right

away—has the potential to save both lives and quality of life.4 Who Is At Risk? While a stroke can happen to anyone at any time, certain factors can place your loved ones at an increased risk of having a stroke.5 One of the best ways to protect them from stroke is to know their risks and do what you can do to help reduce them. While you can’t control age or family history, there are many manageable risk factors that can lower your loved one’s chances of stroke. Some healthy life choices that decrease risk include: • Not smoking or using tobacco products • Limiting alcohol consumption • Maintaining a healthy diet • Exercising regularly.6 Learn More To learn more about stroke and how to recognize all 10 signs and symptoms, visit www.signsofstroke.org. 1. It’s A Myth That Only New-Car Dealers Can Service Vehicles Under Warranty (NAPSI)—True or false: Until your vehicle is out of warranty, it must be serviced by the new-car dealer or the factory warranty will be void. Although many people would have answered “true,” the correct answer is “false,” according to the Car Care Council. By law, independent repair shops can also provide services to maintain your new-car warranty. Consumers are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which prohibits a manufacturer from voiding the vehicle warranty because service was done by a nondealer. According to the FTC, “It’s illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs performed by someone else. Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads and inspections.” It’s

also important to note that the “Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket or recycled part.” When using a nondealer, independent aftermarket shop to maintain your vehicle, the council strongly recommends you keep records and receipts for all maintenance done to the vehicle and adhere to scheduled maintenance requirements. If a warranty claim arises, these records will provide proof that maintenance has been performed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and requirements. “It’s a common misconception that only car dealers can perform the routine maintenance and repairs on a newer vehicle that is under warranty,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The truth is that consumers can have routine repairs performed by their local independent repair shop or do the work themselves without affecting the warranty.” The nonprofit Car Care Council is the source of informa-

Six Amazing Secrets Behind Your Smile (NAPSI)—Each smile is unique. What does yours say about you? Your Teeth Tell Your Story Scientists can learn a great deal about people based on their teeth. Teeth can reveal people’s age, diet and where they live. Teeth can also display signs of stress or illness, providing researchers with a detailed history of a person’s life and health. Teeth Mark Your Individuality Your teeth are as unique as your fingerprints. No two

teeth—even two teeth in the same person’s mouth—are the same. Each of your 20 baby teeth and 32 permanent teeth has its own profile and varies in shape and size. They’ve Been With You Since Birth Your teeth were always there—even if no one could see them at first. You are born with the crowns of your baby teeth beneath your gums. These teeth make their entrance when you’re 3 to 6 months old. The crowns and roots of your permanent teeth form beneath your baby teeth, eventually pushing them out of the way and triggering a visit from the Tooth Fairy. Teeth Survive Long After Death The enamel on teeth is stronger than any other part of the body— so strong that it can remain intact for hundreds of years after someone dies. Studying the teeth of human ancestors has taught scientists some fascinating things about history. For example, studies of dental remains have found evidence that the first travelers to leave Africa for China set out about 80,000 years ago and that

early humans used a simple form of aspirin for pain relief. Even the toughest substance in the body needs regular care, however. Your Teeth Are Tough, But They Need Your Help There are more than 300 different types of cavity-causing bacteria. They feed on leftover sugar in your mouth, creating acids that leave small holes in your teeth. Protect your teeth by brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth once a day, and eating a healthy diet that limits sugary drinks. Who Cares About Your Teeth? Your dentist does. In addi-

Seniors: Make Eye Care Part Of Your Wellness Routine (NAPSI)—Regular checkups at the doctor’s office are a familiar routine for most people: blood pressure checks, blood tests and health history questions. There’s something else you should know, however: Your overall health can affect your eyes. This is why ophthalmologists—physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care—urge people to take a similar wellness approach when it comes to the health of their eyes. By age 65, one in three Americans has some form of age-related, vision-limiting eye disease such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. The good news is, treating

saturday, july 13, 2019

these conditions can slow or prevent vision loss. The key to a diagnosis is a medical eye examination by an ophthalmologist who can help keep your eyes functioning well throughout your life. In general, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that people age 65 or older get a comprehensive medical eye exam every one to two years, regardless of whether they experience any symptoms. Eye Exam or Glaucoma Exam, Often At No Cost The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s unique EyeCare America program helps medically underserved seniors access sight-saving eye care. The program offers two services: a comprehensive medical eye exam for eligible seniors and a glaucoma exam for individuals who are determined to be at increased risk based on their age, race and glaucoma family history. Each service has slightly different eligibility requirements. Under the Seniors program, those eligible will be matched with a nearby volunteer ophthalmologist who will provide a medical eye exam and up to one year of follow-up care for any disease diagnosed at the initial exam, often at no out-of-pocket cost. To be eligible for the Seniors program, you must: • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident • Be age 65 or older • Not belong to an HMO or have eye care benefits through the VA

• Have not seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years. The Glaucoma program provides a glaucoma eye exam at no cost to those who are eligible and uninsured. Glaucoma testing is especially important because the condition can sneak up on you, worsening over time without symptoms. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in people over age 60. The condition can respond well to treatment, especially when diagnosed early. To be eligible for the Glaucoma program, you must: • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident • Not belong to an HMO or have eye care benefits through the VA • Have not had an eye exam in 12 months or more • Be at increased risk for glaucoma, determined by age, race and family history of glaucoma. To learn more about EyeCare America’s Seniors and Glaucoma programs and to find out if you or a loved one is eligible, visit EyeCare America at www.aao. org/eyecareamerica. EyeCare America is co-sponsored by the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc., with additional support provided by Alcon.

The Eyes Are Windows To Your Health (NAPSI)—While most people wait until they feel sick to see a doctor, the key to saving sight is to catch eye diseases early— even before noticing any symptoms. Eye diseases and conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, and cancers can be diagnosed and detected during a simple eye exam. That’s because the eye is the only place in the body where a doctor can have an unobstructed view of blood vessels, nerves and connecting tissue without any need for surgery. Abnormalities spotted in the eye may signal the same changes in other parts of the body. Early detection can help people potentially avoid vision loss and other serious complications.

Eye Exams Are a Simple Procedure that Could Save Your Sight Adults age 65 or over should have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, or as recommended by an ophthalmologist—a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care. To help seniors who haven’t seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years and are concerned about cost, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. EyeCare America’s Seniors program connects eligible seniors with local volunteer ophthalmologists who provide a medical eye exam at no out-ofpocket cost, and up to one year of follow-up care for any condition diagnosed during the initial exam, for the physician services. To be eligible, you must: • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident • Be age 65 or older • Not belong to an HMO or have eye care benefits through the VA • Not have seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years. Don’t qualify for the Seniors program? You may be eligible for EyeCare America’s Glaucoma program. It provides a glaucoma eye exam at no cost to those who are eligible and uninsured. To be eligible, you must: • Be at increased risk for glaucoma, determined by your age, race and family history • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident • Not belong to an HMO or have eye care benefits through the VA • Not have had an eye exam in 12 months or more. EyeCare America has helped

more than 1.8 million people since 1985. Its sight-saving services are made possible through the generous support of the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Inc., with additional support provided by Alcon. Visit www.aao. org/eyecare-america to learn more and determine whether you or a loved one qualifies.

A Delicious And Nutritious Probiotics Boost (NAPSI)—Adding more probiotics to your diet can be a “feel good” experience. Probiotics are “friendly” bacteria that perform useful functions that range from helping to keep your digestive tract running smoothly, to manufacturing vitamins, to protecting you from harmful bacteria. According to Registered Dietitian Tamara Freuman, “Cultured dairy products— such as yogurts and kefirs—are among the tastiest, most convenient and time-tested vehicles for delivering a daily dose of probiotics.” For versatility and flavor, she recommends easy-to-digest kefir—drinkable yogurt—on its own, as a base for smoothies or in place of buttermilk, cream or condensed milk in just about any recipe. “Kefir is a great way to satisfy creamy cravings without all the fat of buttermilk or cream,” adds Freuman. “It’s also an excellent source of probiotics, and now with new lactose-free kefir options, even the one in 10 Americans who, like me, are lactose intolerant can enjoy kefir without the tummy-troubling lactose.” The word “kefir” is thought to have derived from the Turkish

word “keif” for “good feeling.” Make your own good feelings by experimenting with kefir in your kitchen. Here’s a recipe to get you started. Serve it as a tasty entrée for warm-weather meals or pour it into shot glasses and top with grilled shrimp for a party-worthy appetizer with roasted corn, pico de gallo garnish and your favorite hot sauce. Chilled Avocado Soup 3 ripe avocados, pitted and peeled 2/3 cup frozen peas 1 cup Plain Kefir (such as Redwood Hill Farm goat milk kefir OR Green Valley Organics Lactose Free cow dairy kefir) 1/4 cup chopped cilantro 1 Tbsp. chopped white onion 2 tsp. seeded and chopped jalapeño (to taste) Juice of one lime Water or chicken broth Salt, to taste Place avocados, peas, kefir, cilantro, onion, jalapeño and lime juice in a blender. Puree until smooth. Add warm water or chicken broth to thin out the soup. Add salt to taste. Serves 4 to 6. For more kefir recipes, visit www.RedwoodHill.com and www.GreenValleyLactoseFree. com.

Corn flakes were so popular in the early 1900s that there were over 40 companies producing this breakfast cereal in and around Battle Creek, Michigan.
