Fourteenth Annual Forum On Family Homelessness “Caught in Family Homelessness: Parents Tell Their Stories” is the subject of the annual forum presented by The Advocacy Network to End Family Homelessness on Sunday, March 24, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden St, Concord. Due to rising rents, stagnant incomes and a severe shortage of affordable housing, some 200,000 Massachusetts families spend more than 50% of household income on housing. A lost

job, major illness or loss of a spouse can force these families into homelessness with damaging effects on their children. In the 2017-2018 academic year, Massachusetts public schools identified and served 24,071 students who were experiencing homelessness. Forum speakers include three women from nearby towns who will share their stories of surviving homelessness and its devastating effects on their families. Rev. June Cooper, Executive Director of City Mission-Boston, will discuss effective programs to keep families in their homes and children on track. Kelly

Turley, Associate Director of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, will explain current state legislation to prevent and end family homelessness and how every citizen can make their voice matter. State legislators will also be available to take questions and discuss their efforts to support state funding for key homelessness prevention programs. The program is free and open to all. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. The Advocacy Work to End Family Homelessness was formed in 2004 by a small group of concerned citizens from Concord, Acton and surrounding towns with a mission to elimi-

from songs that he performs. As a child growing up in a Christian military family, eventually in northern California, Anthony Russell did not seem likely to become an internationally known Yiddish performer. But he did love music and Bible stories. He watched the movie Amadeus and listened to Handel’s Messiah every day. He later studied music at Holy Names University in Oakland and worked hard to make it in opera as a bass singer. His professional debut was in 2007 as a freed slave in the world premiere of Philip Glass’s “Appomattox” in San Francisco. When cast in the opera “Cosi Fan Tutte” in New York City, Russell met his future husband, Rabbi Michael Rothbaum, and later moved to New York. Frustrated at the limitations of opera roles for bass singers, he was open for something new as he explored Judaism. Two years after Mordechai Tzvi became part of his name at his January 2011 conversion to Judaism, Russell heard a Yiddish song by Sidor Belarsky on the soundtrack for the Coen brothers film, “A Serious Man.” Hearing his own voice reflected in this song, He became hooked on Yiddish music. He was off on

his path to becoming a composer, arranger, and vocalist specializing in Yiddish art and folk songs, chazones and Chasidic nigunim. Along the way, Russell moved back to the San Francisco Bay area together with Rothbaum. All are welcome at the “Written in Breath” performance at no charge. Seen A Bluebird? Have you seen a bluebird in your neighborhood? If so, they are undoubtedly hard pressed looking for a nesting site. In recent years most nesting locations in knot holes in trees are at a premium with competition with imported aggressive English(house) sparrows. Bluebirds will quickly accept manmade boxes for their specific requirements - namely a floor roughly 4 1/2” by 4 1/2”, with an entrance hole 1 1/2” set 6” above the floor. The box should have ventilation holes on the sides or

I love other cats, of course, and I’m hoping to go to a home that has a lonely kitty looking for a friend. It takes me a while to warm up to new situations, but once I do, I love getting attention and would hope you have plenty of toys for me to play with. Best of all, once I’m used to you, I love to snuggle. Don’t expect miracles overnight, but it’ll happen. No small kids please. All cats are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. (You wouldn’t want to sleep in last year’s bed, would you?) No perch in front of the hole that will encourage sparrows. The box should be mounted on a greased metal pole or pipe set out in the open and not more than 6 feet from the ground. This will prevent predators like raccoons, squirrels and snakes from raiding. Keep in mind bluebirds love the open country -- areas like farms, fields, orchards, cemeteries, country clubs, or fairly open back yards away from trees. Regular monitoring is necessary to discourage English sparrows from taking over, as they consistenly kill the parents and their babies. English sparrows are referred to as ‘The Hitlers of the Bird World’. Being a European import and pest they are not protected by law. Keep them evicted. With human knowledge and help this native American Bluebird can survive. For more information Google “Helping Bluebirds” or “Bluebird Nesting Boxes.” Bluebird specific boxes can also be obtained from big box stores(Walmart, Lowe’s, etc. or

online from Ebay). Swallows will also use these boxes. Each swallow eats a minimum of 6,000 insects a day, mainly mosquitoes. Other desireable tenants could be Chickadees (Mass. state bird), tufted titmouse, nuthatches or woodpecker. Like the song says: “I wish you Bluebirds in the Spring”.

Competition and the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition. He performed the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto with both the Wellesley Symphony and Waltham Philharmonic in 2018. Hayden was also a runnerup of the Concord Orchestra’s 2018 Ehlers Young Artist Competition and was invited to play a pre-concert recital. In his free time, Hayden likes to compose music. His latest piece, inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, was written for his school’s Orchestral Ensemble.

Also on the program are Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. The music for Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet was commissioned by the renowned producer Serge Diaglihev for the 1910 season of the Ballet Russe, when Stravinsky was only 28 years old and relatively unknown. The ballet was such a spectacular success that Stravinsky became well known overnight. The orchestra performs the 1945 version of the orchestral suite based on the ballet.

A lost job, major illness or loss of a spouse can force these families into homelessness with damaging effects on their children. Kelly Turley, Associate Director of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, will explain current state legislation to prevent and end family homelessness and how every citizen can make their voice matter. State legislators will also be available to take questions and discuss their efforts to support state funding for key homelessness prevention programs. The program is free and open to all. A reception will

follow in the Parish Hall. The Advocacy Work to End Family Homelessness was formed in 2004 by a small group of concerned citizens from Concord, Acton and surrounding towns with a mission to eliminate the root causes and adverse consequences of family homelessness through public education and advocacy. ANEFH now has over 900 active advocates from some twenty area towns. More information: www.endfamilyhomelessness.net

In this talk Rachel Gans-Boriskin, explores the role photojournalism plays in constructing cultural meaning and the ethical issues this raises for both photojournalists and citizens. The physical presence of photojournalists in moments of danger and suffering often surfaces debates about the responsibility of witnesses to individuals in crisis. Drawing from the fields of journalism, philosophy, and collective memory studies, GansBoriskin offers a reframing of

traditional arguments about photojournalism. Using Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs as case studies, she explores the way that photojournalism can serve as an “object to think with” about the responsibilities individuals have to one another in an increasingly connected world. Concord-Carlisle Community Chest’s Impact On Local Educational Resources Concord and Carlisle’s outstanding school systems are not the only sources of top-notch educational services for youth and families in town. Residents are often drawn to these towns for their renowned school systems, but soon find that they also benefit from a multitude of local nonprofit programs and organizations here, many which are supported by the Concord-Carlisle Community Chest . These services - ranging from preschools to programs in middle and high schools, adult and community education, recreational programming, English language skills, and parenting support - provide valuable services to our community. None of the nonprofit organizations in our towns work in a vacuum, rather they collaborate with each other in order to best support their clients by assessing their needs and identifying and referring them to other local agencies that may provide complementary services. If towns were measured on how they care locally for those in need, Concord and Carlisle would surely be noted for their heart and soul. One example of this comes from Concord-Carlisle Adult & Community Education who, last year, received a call from a local social worker who was working with an Iraqi refugee family living in Concord. Despite the husband’s employment, the family needed the wife to get a job to help support their three young children. And to get to and from a job, she required a driver’s license. She had one from Iraq but needed to learn how to drive in this country. The social worker was hoping CCACE could help, and they could. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Concord-Carlisle Community Chest to fund scholarships for Driver Education classes, CCACE was able to provide lessons and bring her to the road test at no cost to the family - which she passed.

action unlimited The Concord-Carlisle Community Chest is an integral partner in helping our neighbors in need with a 70-year legacy and going strong. The Chest raises and allocates over $500,000 annually to approximately 30 local nonprofits to help those in need in Concord and Carlisle’s communities from all stages of life. Through collaboration with community members, town officials, and local nonprofits, the Community Chest has a real pulse on the needs in our community and allocates funds through a rigorous grant allocation process. Funding is fulfilled 100% by donations from community members and local businesses. In a time when we have seen a reduction or elimination of state or federal funding that keeps some human-service programs operational, the Concord-Carlisle Community Chest steps up to fill crucial gaps in funding. Despite the strong economy and affluence in town, requests for funding from the Community Chest have risen 10% in the past five years. In 2017-2018, the Chest allocated the highest amount of their overall funding to the

education for youth and families sector, amounting to over $164,000 to 10 local nonprofits and accounting for 31% of their total funding. These educational programs provide necessary services to more than 7,000 people in Concord and Carlisle. Funding from the Community Chest enables the nonprofit organizations to service more individuals and families on an ongoing basis or to help out in an emergency. Additional information about the Concord-Carlisle Community Chest and the programs it supports can be found at www.cccommunitychest.org.

Classes - Learning In Retirement Learning in Retirement Association, a non-profit, upcoming classes. These classes, trips and study groups will be happening in the next few weeks. STEM Smorgasbord: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Presenter: Alan Friedman Three Mondays, 10 a.m. to Noon: March 11, 18, 25 Infinity…Is it a construct of the human mind and senses? Is it an abstraction without a concrete existence? Philosophers and theologians have long debated these questions. When Gertrude Stein wrote, “There is no there there,” she had something else in mind, but do you think her words apply to infinity? Mathematicians and physicists also have a long history of exploring infinity. In recent centuries, their discoveries even precipitated a crisis in the foundations of mathematics. When the mathematician Leopold Kronecker stated, “God created the whole numbers. Everything else is the work of men, “he

was thumbing his nose at the mathematical theories of infinity emerging in his day. Take a journey to INFINITY and see what surprises await you there. “It’s Hard to Be Human: But, What’s the Alternative” Presenter: Dr. Arnie Kerzner Four Mondays, 1 – 3 p.m.: March 18, 25, April 1, 8 “There are so many aspects of being a ‘balanced’ person. We have our genetic, early childhood experiences, our biology, our exposure to fate’s up and downs, our spirituality, and our unexpected trials and tribulations – and our aging brains and tired loins.!” “This talk will be a “relational, collaborative” one with members of the audience. Just be ready to share your “Organ Recital”!, your “Personal Meme” and your sense of humor!” “Clean Up Your Indoor Air By Removing Mold, Mites and Other Allergens” Presenter: Jeff May One Monday, 1-3 p.m.: April 22 Indoor-Air-Quality Professional Jeff May will offer tips on improving the quality of your indoor air in both your home and place of work. Sudoku

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Jeff is a Certified Microbial Consultant and author of several books including, “My House is Killing Me: The Home Guide for Families” Go to www.mayindoorair.com for more information on Jeff and his company. “Pursuit of Passion” Presenter: Debby Monk One Monday, 1 – 3 p.m.: April 29 Deborah Monk will share her journey of fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming an author. Debby has published two women’s fiction novels and the series ‘Seeds of Wisdom,’ and has produced six hand-made books aimed at empowering women to believe in their own potential. Debby will give us a glimpse into her work-in-progress, a memoir about her life as a professional ballroom dancer. This presentation will include time for you to have books signed by the author. “The Aging Brain” Eight Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to

Noon: March 12, 19, 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 We’re all getting older every day, and scientific research has shown that starting in our twenties, some brain functions begin a linear decline. Even if we avoid diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, parts of the brain inevitably shrink, replicating cells become damaged, and fluid processing skills such as multitasking and episodic memory worsen. But is old age all doom and gloom? Are we destined for declining brain function once we’re barely out of adolescence? Through this fascinating course by Dr. Thad A. Polk of the University of Michigan, you will learn what happens to our brains as we age and what we can do about it. Dr. Polk has been named to the Princeton Review’s list of the Best 300 Professors in the United States. “Great American Bestsellers: The Books That Shaped America” One Monday, 1 – 3 p.m.: March11 (Introduction) Eight Tuesdays, 1 – 3 p.m.: March 12, 19, 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 At our introductory lecture,

saturday, march 16, 2019

members of our class will select the bestsellers that they would like to investigate. Perhaps one of your favorite books is on the list. At each of our classes we will see two lectures and members will facilitate the discussion of the book they have chosen. Professor Peter Conn, University of Pennsylvania describes his lectures. He writes, “As we proceed in the course, I will discuss the distinctive qualities and particular accomplishments of each book. I will comment on the recurrence of certain themes, among them the meaning of America, the idea of success, the complex questions of race and gender, and the prominence of religion”. There are over 20 bestsellers to explore, for example, “Little Women, “The Maltese Falcon” and “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Wednesday, March 20 All About Mistral - Julie Scolnik Julie Scolnik, flutist and Artistic Director of Mistral, (formerly Andover Chamber Orchestra) will talk about this “unique and engaging ensemble of international concert artists who perform with an irresist-
