Peter’s Editorial What a lot of rain we have had recently. I trust it is appreciated by all locals for their gardens, their farms and for their tanks. I recently travelled up to Mildura and there is a lot of water lying around there too, with many crops sitting virtally in paddy fields. I’m not a farmer, but I know this can’t be good for crops. All the best to all local farmers and we hope this will be a bumper year for you all. If any of you along High Street have noticed a goose running loose:- it’s probably mine. We recently acquired 3 geese, and 1 has escaped. We are located near the Public Hall, and have seen it over the road next to the police station. Unfortunately we were not able to get anywhere near it before it took off-like a jumbo towards the back of the Primary School. Please let me know any ideas on how to catch a goose. Once I catch the goose, I will clip the goose and look after the goose. There are no plans to accomodate the saying:

In 1978 this photo was taken of the flooded Leigh River and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effect on Inverleigh. Later in this Edition you can read a report by Katrina Robson from the Inverleigh Progress Association of this event. And so as we go to print this October, the Leigh River (and many others around Victoria and beyond) are swollen. As you can see from the rain chart (left), heavy rains have fallen in July and September, and into the start of October. Our front cover shows the condition of the Leigh River in early October, and the volume and force of the water. I trust there is no need to remind all locals about driving in flooded waterways, but please make it known to city slickers that here in the country, common sense reigns!

NEW ROBOT COMES TO BANNOCKBURN PHARMACY

“Sheldon” is the new dispensing Robot recently installed at Bannockburn Pharmacy. The new automated machine can collect a wide range of prescription items, saving the Pharmacist and staff time in manually locating the various items. Resident Pharmacist, Scott Wilkes, explained to the gathered crowd how “Sheldon” worked, and demonstrated the precision and accuracy of the Robot. “This will allow me more time to speak directly to customers” said Scott, “and that can only be a good thing”. Pictured right is Victoria, who won the completion to name the Robot. Well done Victoria, and enjoy your gift vouchers for some new toys, and we love the name!

BALLOT PACKS MAILED THIS WEEK FOR GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL ELECTION Voters should check the mail for their ballot packs for the Golden Plains Shire Council election from later this week. Returning Officer for the election Richard Shiells is encouraging people to vote as early as possible: ‘With the whole election being conducted by post, it’s incredibly important voters complete and return their ballot material as soon as possible to make sure their vote counts.’ Ballot papers must be posted or hand-delivered to the election office by 6.00 pm Friday 21 October or they cannot be counted. Voters who haven’t received their ballot pack by Wednesday 12 October should call 1300 587 451 during business hours to arrange a replacement. Candidates who have nominated to stand for election are listed in the ballot packs and at vec.vic. gov.au/GoldenPlainsElection/Candidates. Where provided by candidates, a photo and statement will be included. Voters can also view candidates’ answers to the candidate questionnaire online. Southern Farming Systems presents AgriFocus, a field day for cropping systems in southern Victoria Southern Farming Systems (SFS) is proud to announce the return of its annual field day AgriFocus, the leading technical cropping event for the high rainfall zone (HRZ). Now in its seventh year, AgriFocus will include an impressive list of technical trials, industry experts and featured machinery over two days at its Westmere trial site in western Victoria on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th October. AgriFocus continues to develop the program to ensure growers and advisers find the technical expertise and advice necessary to keep their businesses profitable. This year the program will include keynote speakers on topics including managing blackleg disease, climate risk and farm technology advancements. Also featuring presentations on windrowing versus direct heading of canola, subsoil manuring, variety evaluation trials, plant growth regulators, cultivar disease interactions, herbicide options, student tours and more. The comprehensive program is currently being finalised. Sponsors and supporters of SFS will also have product displays to provide valuable networking opportunities for growers, agronomists and

industry representatives in an informal environment. We are pleased to see the return of the National Centre for Farmer Health to undertake free health check-ups for farmers. Inverleigh Public Hall and Mechanics Institute History Over the years the Inverleigh Public Hall has served the community in a number of ways. At different stages it has been home to doctors, the Infant Welfare Nurse, a podiatrist, school students when the school buildings were out of action and kinder children in the 1970s. It was also set up as the town emergency centre. In 1997 the Golden Plains Shire made a change when it listed the hall as the alternative emergency venue, after the sporting complex, in its Emergency Management Plan. The bluestone Mechanics Institute room, known as the Supper room, has seen significant internal changes with the current colour scheme being recommended by a heritage architect. The cracked cream plaster walls prior to restoration gave no hint of the previous colours, but, when the paint was scraped off around the windows, the

original terracotta colour with green line trim was revealed. There used to be steps down into the supper room. This did not allow for access for all, so the supper room floor, which had to be replaced, was raised in line with the foyer. Some people, used to the old height of the floor, sometimes feel as if they are walking on a platform. A warm invitation is extended to all to come to the Family Variety Concert on Friday 11th November at 7 pm at the Hall, adults $5, children free. We will be celebrating the 150th year of the Mechanics Institute building and will be having supper in our old bluestone supper room. Christine Windle.

Birds in Your Garden Are you seeing and hearing lots

of birds in your garden? We have noticed a wonderful increase in numbers and species over the time we have been planting on our block. As gardeners, we can plan to improve the conditions for birds, providing food, water, and shelter for nesting and safe perching. The first step is to observe which birds are around your place and to do a bit of research into which species are native to your area. Our garden has colonies of wrens, New Holland honey eaters, wattle birds, magpies, spotted pardelots kookaburras and willie wagtails. Crested pigeons, several raptors including wedge tailed eagles, sulphur crested cockatoos, corellas, galahs, crimson rosellas, Eastern rosellas and owls visit and pass through. Blackbirds, an introduced species, abound. Clearly a ‘one size fits all’ garden will not suffice. Each species of bird has a different pattern of behaviour, which includes finding a favoured type of nesting site and food source. Birds can be seed eaters, nectar eaters, fruit eaters, insect eaters or meat eaters. In addition to the type of food, the way of getting a meal can also differ.

Finding the perfect nesting site is vital to the successful raising of young. Birds can favour dense thickets, high branches, reeds or clumps of grass, the ground, and holes in trees or cliffs. Many birds readily nest around manmade structures. Birds also need to be able to find materials that are just right for their nest building. Nesting boxes can substitute for hollows in trees but make sure that you select the type of nesting box suited to the type of bird you want to house. Some birds will make your garden their base while others will visit. Both native and exotic plants can provide habitat for nesting and safety from predators. Naturally native plants provide excellent food sources for native birds. Exotic plants can also provide food, as we have observed when three New Holland honey eaters were sipping nectar from one spire of salvia flowers in our nursery sales area. Corellas have stripped our trees of unripe apples, ripping them apart to reach the seeds within. The best way to feed birds is to plant for them. Providing bird baths and ponds of different sizes and depths will cater for a range of users. Keep the water cool, clean the birdbath regularly, place it with nearby escape access to trees or shrubs and out of reach of predators, provide a branch or stone in deeper birdbaths for a small bird to use if they fall in, and include filling the birdbaths in your list of jobs for holiday house minders.

Hello all, I would like to bring up some issues from the last month. Recently there’s been a few items in the news regarding home invasions, but we are not experiencing this in our area. Please do not barricade yourselves in your houses at night time which can leave you trapped inside if a fire or other emergency occurs. You may have a fall and cannot unbolt the doors, unlock the deadlocks etc. By barricading yourself inside that can delay Police & emergency services. By all means secure your houses but don’t make it that you cannot exit in the case of an emergency or take measures that makes it extremely difficult for emergency services to get in (grills on windows, bars across doors etc). If anybody knows the culprits shooting the street signs especially on the Hamilton Highway around the Harvey Road turn off I would be very interested to hear from you. Not only is it very dangerous, it looks appalling and takes away from the amenity of the town and the surrounding area. If I identify anybody involved they will face serious criminal charges and if convicted will undoubtedly lose their shooters licence and firearms.

There is a great website called Birdlife Australia, which has a link to the website, Backyard Birds. I used Backyard Birds as a reference for this article. It includes a bird identification tool and is dedicated to conservation of native birds and their habitats and is well worth a visit.

For those who have not noticed the Shelford-Inverleigh Road speed limit has been reduced to 80 km/h. I do not set the speed limits but I am expected to enforce them, I am checking a lot of motorists still doing 100 km/h plus along the road. At some point I will stop giving the warnings and issue some fines so please take notice of the 80 km/h posted speed limit. I again want to stress that all properties need clear numbers on their front of their addresses. I was conducting a firearms storage inspection operation at night recently and I again had trouble locating addresses in the dark because houses did not have numbers on the front of them or on the fences. This will delay emergency services responding in a time of need. Regarding floods, please do not drive into or through flood waters because you mightn’t know how deep it is or how strong the current is. If you require police assistance/attendance please call 000 and if I am not working they will send the nearest Police unit available. If it is something non urgent there is a pad on the door for messages. Keep safe Chris

General elections are held every four years. INVERLEIGH UNDER WATER Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink. The year is 1978 and yet another flood flows into the historic township of Inverleigh and surrounding districts. The local community only just recovering from the largest flood on record in February 1973. The photograph from The Geelong Advertiser depicting floodwaters from 19 November 1978. Flood waters rose with ‘torrents up to 61 centimetres deep racing through town’ with approximately twenty low lying homes being evacuated. Valuables and priceless belongings were placed on higher ground with volunteer assistance from the Red Cross, SES and Inverleigh Fire Brigade.

Inverleigh, 25 kilometres west of Geelong is surrounded by both the Leigh and Barwon Rivers and has been subject to many floods. The Leigh River rose to 7.4 metres at Shelford in 1978. Beware of rising water at Shelford, get your galoshes, your brolly and sandbags ready it’s on its way to Inverleigh. There are many reasons to celebrate the arrival of Spring and the warmer weather, but it is important to be aware of the changing problems for our pets.

Tableting your cat: Have your cat in a sitting position and place one hand on top of the cat’s head over the ears, holding the cheek bones.

It is a misconception that animals avoid substances that may cause them problems.

· Mulch, Fertilizers, Weed Killers & Snail Baits are toxic to pets. Coco mulch is now available in Australia and contains the same properties as chocolate and can lead to serious medical problems if ingested. Snail bait is formulated to be attractive to garden pests but it also makes it attractive to dogs and cats. Herbicides aren’t as dangerous as snail bait, but they can still cause vomiting if eaten. Put your pets inside when using herbicides - along with their food bowls and chew toys. Keep them inside until the treated area is dry. The major hazard in the garden to our pets are things we put there.

· Seasonal Allergies in our pets may see them experiencing sneezing, sniffling or watery eyes, but this is not usually severe and is easily managed.Some seasonal allergies in pets are more likely to present in the form of skin irritation.

· Beware of toxic spring plants, below is a list of plants known to be toxic to pets:

Tilt the head backwards so your cat’s nose is pointing towards the ceiling. This will cause the mouth to open slightly. Hold the tablet between your thumb and index finger. Drop the tablet into the back of the throat. Close their mouth and rub the neck.

Tableting your dog: Have your dog in a sitting position. Place your hand over your dog’s muzzle. Place your thumb and forefinger behind the large fang tooth. Hold the tablet between your thumb and index finger of your second hand.

If you think your pet has eaten a toxic plant contact the clinic immediately. Simply coming into contact with some of these plants can cause our pets to scratch, lick, chew and rub their skin until fur loss and dermatitis develops. · Grass seeds can create big problems for our pets. Locating a grass seed on a pet can be difficult as they migrate under the skin and burrow their way between toes, in nostrils, eyes and ears. Depending on the location of the grass seed your pet may require sedation to remove the seed. Keeping their coat short and physically checking by running your fingers through their fur and between your pet’s toes, will help to prevent grass seed problems. · Spring is the beginning of breeding season for cats, so if you cat hasn’t been desexed, now is the time. · Fleas are far more common in spring. The first signs your pets might have fleas is excessive scratching, biting and licking at the skin. The places to look for fleas on your pet are around the tail base and stomach. Look for flea dirt this looks like small black specks of dirt, similar to ground pepper. This is digested dried blood. We recommend Revolution a spot on product used once a month. Open your dogs mouth with the fingers of your second hand. Place the tablet at the back of the throat and close the mouth. Rub their neck. Give your dog lots of praise for swallowing. Always refer to the instructions given on the label of your pets medications. If you are still unable to get your pet to take the tablet, try disguising it in something they love such as cheese, peanut butter or tuna. Alternatively you can use a pill popper available for purchase from the clinic. Never give your pet human medications unless specified by our Vets. Common human medication such as ibuprofen and paracetamol can be harmful or fatal to pets.

Prescription diets are formulated for the medical needs of pets. Pets need to be diagnosed with a particular problem or disease before our vets can, as part of the medical managment plan, describe the best diet for your pet. Pets many be prescribed diets for many reasons such as kidney disease, urinary health, dental disease, liver function or mobility. We recommend Hill’s Prescription diets.

It is easier to apply the ointment dose to the flat end of your finger. Opening the eyelids with the other hand. In a gentle wiping motion from inside to outside, deposit the ointment.

Ear Drops:

Hold ear erect so the ear canal opens. Add the drops into the ear, while still holding the ear massage the base. The quelching noise generally means the drops have passed into the ear canal.

INVERLEIGH CRICKET CLUB UPDATE Gayle Tierney MP, Member for Western Victoria, officially opened the Inverleigh Cricket Nets project on Friday 9 September. The project involved the construction of a new cricket training facility, including four individually enclosed cricket pitches with natural turf run-ups and the removal of the old nets. The project will allow the Inverleigh Cricket Club to increase participation, as more members can train together and practice their skills in a more realistic environment. The new nets were a jointly funded, $79,000 project, including a Sport and Recreation Victoria contribution of $38,000, an Inverleigh Cricket Club contribution of $40,000 (including in-kind contribution). Golden Plains Shire Council managed the project. Mayor, Cr Des Phelan, says it’s a huge win for the community. “Team sport has a lot of benefits, but most importantly, it brings country communities together.” “Council is always glad to help communities come together in an active, healthy way and these nets provide better facilities and better opportunities for that.”

“This contribution by the Inverleigh Cricket Club is huge – a lot of time and hard work went into this project and on behalf of Council I would like to commend the Club and local community on this fantastic achievement.” I would also like to thank Sport and Recreation Victoria on behalf of Council for recognising the benefit of a project like this to the Inverleigh community.”

VSTWP COMMENCES NEW SERRATED TUSSOCK PROJECT IN INVERLEIGH NORTH REGION.

October 2016 Serrated Tussock (Nassella trichotoma) is an introduced invasive plant from South America that has the potential to rapidly decrease the biodiversity of native grasslands and seriously reduce the agricultural capacity of properties. To further promote awareness of this noxious weed, the Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party (VSTWP) has launched a new extension project in a region north of Inverleigh. The project area is bounded by Inverleigh, Shelford and Teesdale and covers 6,500 hectares. Tim Johnston, Extension Officer from the VSTWP will be offering free inspections and providing expert advice to all landowners over the next 3 to 6 months in the area, and aims to build the capacity of landowners to identify and control this invasive weed. Mr Johnston advises that “The serrated tussock message is about integrated weed management and productive land management. Prevention and early detection of new infestations and replacement of existing infestations with desired species is critical in managing this invasive plant.” stated Mr. Johnston. Re: Chinamans Lagoon Learmonth Street, Teesdale Have you noticed how much the grass is growing this year with all the spring rain? The Chinamans Lagoon Committee of Management certainly have and are concerned about the fire risk that the weedy grasses in the reserve could pose to your safety if nothing is done before the summer fire season. In collaboration with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) we plan to introduce a flock of Merino sheep to reduce the fuel load well before the summer. So you are likely to see sheep in the reserve in the coming weeks because we feel that it’s important to take action soon. We are asking for your cooperation in two ways; 1.If you have a dog please ensure that it doesn’t wander into the reserve and if you’re walking your dog in the Reserve please keep it under control at all times 2.Please ensure that the Chinamans Lagoon entry gates are kept closed at all times. This is a radical change in management policy for the committee, but we feel other options like slashing the whole reserve or spraying with herbicide are not practical and would be expensive. We know how Chinamnans Lagoon is an important historic reserve in Teesdale with beautiful wildflowers in spring. Targeted grazing will help to preserve these natural features while keeping it safe for all concerned. VICTORIA PARK-INVERLEIGH

By the time many of you read this article the second Car Boot Sale will have been held at Victoria Park in Inverleigh. The Committee of Management hopes that the weather has been kind and the success of the first Sale held in July will have been followed by another successful day. Certainly the number of bookings is encouraging and there is every indication that the day will have the support of the local community. The Committee has a brief to maintain and improve the Park for all to enjoy and the money raised at these Car Boot Sales will help to achieve these aims. A further Car Boot Sale is to be held on 20 November and another is being planned for the autumn. September has been a busy month at the Park. Early in the month a group of motor home enthusiasts spent a week end at the Park and Leigh District Riding Club had a Sunday Rally in the middle of the month. The last week end of the month was taken up by Bellarine Harness for Pleasure Club conducting what is known as “Oz Trec”. This was initiated in Australia by Bellarine Harness for Pleasure Club and is based on a French idea devised to test the expertise of equestrian tourist guides on horseback. It then developed into a sport in its own right catering for all abilities. The sport is now popular amongst both the harness and ridden fraternities of the equestrian world. The activity involves a cross country drive at a predetermined speed followed by an untimed section involving some added twists such as hills, bridges, serpentines and negotiating obstacles to test the ability of both horse and driver. Members of Bellarine Harness for Pleasure Club were joined by members of other harness clubs from around Victoria for the weekend During October the Park’s two consistent users – Bellarine Harness for Pleasure Club and Leigh District Riding Club - will both use the Park for their regular monthly activities whilst Rebecca Wilson’s Little Foxes will resume their activities after the school holidays.

Do you sometimes wonder why people do what they do? What are the ‘drivers”, what’s the motivation? How about you? Is your glass half full or half empty? Why? In a book “Know Your Why” by Ken Costa, the author refers to an Old Testament character called Caleb. Through Caleb we can learn a great deal about discovering our sense of being and making an impact. He was an extraordinary man. Five times it is said that Caleb “served the LORD wholeheartedly” and that he had a “different spirit.” In the Old Testament story, twelve people, including Caleb, were called to go on a journey to discover what the land of Canaan was like. This was no different from many of our tasks today. Consultants are asked to undertake “scoping exercises” or “feasibility studies” for complex business projects, or to conduct “risk analyses” to determine whether a project is financially viable. And anyone who has been to one of these “report back” meetings, PowerPoint at the ready, understands the opposition faced by Caleb. Twelve men visited the same site, met the same people, learned the same facts, saw the same topography and heard the same reports. On their return, ten of them said, effectively, “You must be joking. We can’t go there. The people are giants. The cities are fortified. We’ll never make it.” (“The costs will overrun, the terrain is impossible, the technical feasibility is negative” and so on.)

Yet Caleb, who followed the Scriptures he was familiar with, agreed with Joshua and said, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us… The LORD is with us. Do not be afraid”. Caleb trusted God. He saw the world through the lens of God’s character. This is reminiscent of two executives who visited Indonesia to test the market for shoe sales. One reported back that few of the inhabitants wore shoes and concluded that there was no point in setting up a factory. The other executive looked at the same situation but saw the opportunity of selling shoes to the millions of shoeless Indonesians. Same place, same facts, different perspective. I believe that our world - with all its convoluted opportunities to live independently of the original prospectus, the Bible - is a world that is “exceedingly good” because those forces that corrupt and obstruct the way for creation to become as God intended no longer have control. Jesus came and did away with the evil of the world! Sadly we still choose the lesser option. Jesus can make boredom bearable and toil tolerable for those who see their work and life through the lens of his goodness. He also brings a contentment and happiness far greater than any other experience of it in the world. If only we could see the world differently, as Caleb did. If we see it as the other ten did, we see giants who are too difficult to defeat. We’re negative, complaining, untrusting and unable to advance. However, if we believe and trust in a prevailing God, then we see that the world is “exceedingly good” and we can move toward our God-given callings and not be afraid. We see milk and honey flowing from the goodness of people whose lives are changed.

A group of Inverleigh Seniors were privileged to attend the presentation of Volunteer Seniors Awards at Government House in Melbourne on Tuesday 4th October. The Governor of Victoria, The Hon. Linda Dessau AM, and The Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing, Martin Foley MP, made the presentations. Miss Gwen Smith received the Premiers Award for Victoria Senior of the Year. TEESDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL Welcome to term 4 We hope everyone had a safe and happy school holiday break and have returned ready to face the busy final term for 2016. We have three camps, the kinder transition program and the year six graduation to look forward to in the busy weeks ahead! A Sense of Community Involvement in the school community is a great way for families to also feel connected to their local community. There are many opportunities across our school events and projects for parents to feel involved in their child’s school. Such activities are a great way to both contribute and meet new people from the community. A few opportunities that you can readily consider: •Recently two events were conducted by the Parents and Friends Association (PFA). The “Muffin and Hot Chocolate Day” and Father’s Day Stall provided an opportunity for support. You can always see PFA President Kim Andrews to offer support for PFA events. •The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is always looking for help in the garden. See parent Deb Smith to offer support in this area. •The Sandpit project is currently underway. See parent Lana Van Galen to offer support in this area. •Working Bees are held once a term on a Sunday morning, 9-11am. All welcome. •Mudbrick Café. The Café is open once a month from 11.30am – 12.15pm. Students provide both service to guests and also perform two small performances. All are welcome to attend at the next Café opening on Wednesday 12th October. Such examples provide parents with a range of flexible options to support the school and also gain a sense of connection to the local community. Farm Walk 5/6 Excursion The Farm Walk was held on the 8th September as the conclusion of the seven week “Childless Tractors” farm safety program provided by Hesse Rural Health Service. The program informed students about the dangers on a farm, such as chemicals and dams, how to do first aid and how the students can be safe in all aspects of farming life. The farm visit was held at Wurrook South, a farm on the RokewoodShelford Road. SunSmart Too much UV can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. You can’t see or feel the sun’s UV, so don’t be fooled. Whatever the weather, if the UV levels are three or more, it’s important to SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK and SLIDE! At school in term 4 and term 1 the rule is “No hat, no play!” so please ensure your child has a wide-brimmed hat. eSmart – Being smart, safe and responsible Flicks & Pics: Sending and downloading images and videos is easy – the hard part is knowing what the person you send it to might do with it. Think carefully about your safety before you accept a file or webcam feed from someone you do not know or trust in the real world. Remember that (static) web cam images can be faked – seeing an image of someone you’re chatting online to, doesn’t mean they are who they say they are. School Concert The School Concert was held on Tuesday 13th September at the Geelong West Town Hall. What a fantastic night! The students performed very well and enjoyed singing and dancing to the theme “Stephanie Alexander Kitchen and Garden - Healthy Food”. Students enjoyed showcasing their creative talents at the concert – including making props, writing songs and singing. They were so very excited to be performing in front of family and friends! Special thanks to our Music teacher, Earl Leonard, for all of his efforts to manage all aspects of the concert and to all staff for their support and of course, their special “Hey Food” performance, which was a lot of fun! Parents and Friends Association (PFA) Upcoming events for term 4: 22nd October – Bunnings Corio BBQ We are looking for lots of volunteers for this day. A roster will be placed at the office with 2 hour time slots and we would love to see lots of names on the roster. This is a major fundraiser for the year, but we need your help for it to be a success. 10th November – High Eight Living Fundraising night 24th November – Muffin and Chocolate Milk at recess Muffin and Hot Chocolate Day - Thank you for supporting this fundraiser. A total of $426.79 was raised. Father’s Day Stall - We hope Dad enjoyed his special gift. Thank you to the PFA for their wonderful efforts.
