FUND RAISING FOR EMILY HOLMES

Emily is a smiling, 23 years old from Inverleigh, where she lives with her Mum, Yve and her family. She attended kinder and primary school in Inverleigh and she and her family have lived here for approx. 20 years.

Emily has had 6 strokes in the last 8 years and the reason for these strokes is still unknown. Today Emily has damage to her brain, brain inflammation, has loss of hearing in one ear, uncontrollable repetitive eye movements that reduce her vision and affect her balance and coordination. She cannot walk unless assisted and requires 24/7 personal care to complete the activities of everyday living. Emily had dreams of becoming a Kindergarten Teacher herself. She was once a fit, happy and healthy teenager. Even with setbacks from the first 4 strokes, she learnt to walk again, she achieved her goal of travelling to Bali, she volunteered weekly for a number of years at a local Kindergarten, and even supported the Leukaemia Foundation by shaving her head in 2016 to raise money for those less fortunate than herself.

At the end of 2017 Emily had 2 more strokes. Yve is Emily’s Mum, and has always been the first to offer help to anyone else and for many years has been a tower of strength and a determined advocate for the best outcomes for Em. She, has recently graduated as a Registered Nurse, Division 1, to help her understand Emily’s condition and needs. Now Yve must complete her graduate year which means being away from Emily for at least 12 hours each shift, and pay others to help care for Emily during those times. The costs involved in paying for Emily’s care, her medical needs and everyday living have stretched her family beyond its limits. A group of Yve’s friends have recognised how hard this year has been for Yve. It is hard on the family - financially, emotionally, physically and, with the family’s permission have begun organising many fundraisers. The initial plan was for the funds to be used to help pay for Em’s care. The start of our efforts have been so inspiring we’re now thinking that

Local News if enough funds can be raised then significant modifications to the family home can be made to further Emily’s independence. Emily now needs to attend intensive rehabiltation four days per week and attends many, many medical appointments. So far a movie night organised for 19th May was sold out due to the awesome support from the area. Another Movie Night is booked on Wednesday June 20th at 7.30pm. The movie screening will be ‘Breath’ based on the novel by Tim Winton, starring Simon Baker. For more info and to purchase tickets contact: Fiona Sharp on 0409 656 165, Raelene Pearce 0439 303 122 or Jasmyne Walker on 0411 202 861 A Music Trivia Night is planned for Sat July 14th at Inverleigh Public Hall. Tickets are on sale now. Anyone who would like to donate a silent auction item please contact: Gayle Manganelli on 0409 865 449. Anyone who would like to donate a bottle of wine (over the value of $10) for the Mystery Wine Bottle Raffle please contact: Linda Farrimond on 0448 651 004 A Cake Stall will be held in September at Higheight Home and Living, with home baked treats on sale of ‘Red Door’ fame; past Red Door regulars definitely don’t want to miss this one! Betsy and the Barista will also be there selling coffee and other delicious drinks. Watch this space for more info. Inverleigh Primary School Children and Parents Club are behind the cause raising funds and supporting the family A “go fund me” page raised 94% of its initial $5000 goal in 3 days with the amazing support of friends of Emily’s and her family, so we’ve raised the bar in the hope of raising an incredible amount that will exceed our expectations.

And finally, Leigh Valley Lions are also planning a fundraiser to support the family directly, as well as offering to support any fundraising events we hold in any way they can. Please keep in touch with any of the contacts mentioned above for updates, follow the Leigh News Facebook page “leighnews-inverleigh” and of course the “gofundme” page, and spread the word around to raise more funds for this most worthy cause.

The heaps will be dealt with and the smell of smoke will be noticeable throughout the township. However while the restrictions have been lifted the need for care remains firmly in place. LEIGH NEWS PAST EDITIONS

I have recently been archiving the some past editions of the Leigh News for the Historical Society. It has been very interesting to see how the Leigh News has developed over the years and to see how many people have served our community in this way. The Leigh News started in March 1977 and a copy of the very first edition is not in the archives. If you could check your past copies of the Leigh News and if by chance you have a copy of Volume 1, Number 1, March 1977, I would be most grateful if you would allow me to make a copy and then return the original to you. NEW ACCOMMODATION IN INVERLEIGH

R& R Cot t a ge

Well it’s finally here! Accommodation has opened in Inverleigh, a much needed addition to our town. R&R cottage (Rest & Relaxation/Robyn & Robert/Rustic & Retro - take your pick), is a cute and cosy 2 BR cottage with full kitchen facilities. Relax in the clawfoot bath in the spacious bathroom, or enjoy the quirky courtyard where you can relax in the sun or on the verandah, enjoying the lovely gardens.

Two large queen size bedrooms are on offer. Bedroom 1 is decorated in rustic style with bedhead made from recycled pallets. The other is retro with the bedhead being the recycled old front screen door. Renovated with mostly recycled materials, this cottage is a little bit different and combines the old with the new, beautifully. Artwork displayed is by local artist, Julie Randall and can be purchased by contacting the artist or the owner whose details are provided. After a very successful open house, where many took advantage of being able to have a look at what is being offered, R&R cottage is now open for business. Rainfall for Inverleigh

POLICE REPORT FOR APRIL 2018

Hello all, My topic this month is cars flashing headlight to warn other motorists of Police. When this is occurring I can tell because obviously I get quite a few less motorists speeding into the town which can be a good thing. However I have found that the best way for people to change their behaviour long term is by being fined. Years ago while working in Geelong we regularly had numerous people urinating, vomiting and defecating in doorways around the nightclub precinct on the weekends. Why should shopkeepers and residents have to put up with that when they come to work. The fine was some $700 odd dollars. I got sick of warning people over and over and I and some other members started to book everyone we found doing it. Now a $700 fine really hurts and when word got around the behaviour reduced dramatically. In my last couple of years there I struggled to find anyone doing it. Here in Inverleigh flashing your lights to other motorists may reduce their behaviour on that occasion but often will not change their behaviour as much as receiving a fine. A fine of $300 odd dollars is a lot of money and you tend to remember getting it and where it happened. I am now noticing a large reduction in people I get speeding around the area because of the enforcement I have done over the last

3 odd years (exception being holiday periods). I believe that motorists are getting to know that you do not speed, drink drive or drive dangerously around Inverleigh. I would rather residents do not flash the other motorists and let me deal with them if they are choosing to speed through your town. The majority of people who get fined will not do it again and will probably tell lots of other people about it and how bad that Inverleigh policeman is. I can live with that especially if that means you the residents of Inverleigh, Teesdale and Shelford won’t hopefully have to experience road trauma involving your family members in my response zone because of the change of behaviours I manage to achieve through fining people. On another issue the area has been experiencing some theft from cars and sheds recently. If you do not want to become a victim of crime I need you to keep your cars locked and do not leave valuables in vehicles as that only encourages thieves to continue with that activity. Try to keep your entrance gates shut as that can deter people driving into your property. Keep a look out in your area and report any suspicious behaviour to Police. Keep safe Chris

Lighting upgrade at Inverleigh Sporting Complex, Victoria now complete The project will provide an opportunity for local sporting clubs to use the grounds at night and for the community to hold evening events. The Coalition Government invested $220,000 as part of its commitment to regional Australia Future sporting stars of Inverleigh, near Geelong, now have a brighter future following the installation of new lighting at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex. Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the Coalition Government’s investment had provided a significant boost to grassroots sport. “This project will upgrade lighting on Oval to meet AFL Victoria Guidelines and ensure that residents have access to every opportunity they can to play sport,” Dr McVeigh said. Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the Coalition Government was proud to fund this upgrade which has delivered new floodlights, new light towers, power supply, cabling and underground works. “The complex will provide a space for evening markets and concerts, encouraging people to get out and about, which will improve social cohesion within the community,” Ms Henderson said. Mayor of Golden Plains Shire Helena Kirby said she was pleased with the lighting upgrade to the Inverleigh Sporting Complex and the many benefits it delivers to the local community. “Improved lighting allows the sporting complex to host night matches and improve training capability and safety; it will also play a part in attracting new players, increasing participation in sport and increasing spectators,” Cr Kirby said. The project was jointly funded with the Coalition Government investing $220,000 and Golden Plains Shire Council $1,221.

advertising COUNCIL PET REGISTRATION AUDITS ABOUT TO BEGIN printed on carbon neutral paper

15

Golden Plains Shire Council is undertaking a Shire-wide Pet Registration Audit in May and June to encourage responsible pet ownership, improve pet registration levels and help build a safer, happier community. The Audit involves Council’s Community Protection Officers visiting properties in Golden Plains Shire to make sure domestic pets are registered and microchipped. Councillor Helena Kirby, Mayor of Golden Plains Shire Council, said the Audit is ultimately about community safety. She said, “As the Audit will see Council staff visiting pet owners at their homes, it is important the community understands just how important pet registrations are to the community, and why. “Pet owners are required to microchip and register all dogs and cats with their local Council under the Domestic Animals Act 1994. “The Pet Registration Audit follows an increase in local dog attacks, dogs at large and nuisance complaints in Golden Plains Shire – registration helps Council identify problem animals and follow up with their owners, minimising the chances of repeat issues. “Pet registration (which requires microchipping), enables Council to resolve issues involving pets much, much faster, which is significantly better for the pet owners, and any other people, involved. “Registering your pet also helps us find your pet should they accidentally escape your property, making the chances of getting back a lost furry friend much higher. It can also help us identify pets that have died in road accidents, and notify you. “I strongly encourage residents who have unregistered dogs or cats to get in touch with Council as soon as possible to register their pet, as the cost to register a domestic animal is much less than the fine for failing to do so,” said Cr Kirby. Benefits of pet registration ·Includes a ‘Free Ride Home’ for pets at large when they have been collected by Council. ·Allows pets to be returned to their homes promptly, which can significantly reduce the distress associated with missing animals. ·Allows pet owners to be notified when their pets have been found to have passed away. ·Saves residents a potential $317 fine (2017-18) for failing to register a pet over three months of age, plus a potential $180 pound fee and the cost of registration. ·Allows Council to get in touch with the owners of dogs involved in animal attacks or nuisance complaints, so that issues can be resolved for local families as quickly as possible. Registration fees The cost of registration is $126 (per animal). Discount registration is $43 (per animal) and is available for: ·Dogs used for working stock ·Animals over 10 years of age ·Animals that have been desexed (proof required) ·Any animal registered with an approved organisation (eg. VCA, FCC) ·Animals kept for commercial breeding as part of a registered Domestic Animal Business. A further discount of 50% of the fee applies to Pensioner Concession Card holders only (prior approval must be obtained from Council). Failure to register or renew the registration of a dog or cat over the age of three months is a Council offence. Further information Residents can download the Domestic Animal Registration Form at www.goldenplains.vic.gov.au/residents/my-home/animals/pet-registration or enquire via Customer Service on 5220 7111 or drop into our service centres in Smythesdale, Linton or Bannockburn to register their pet.

Golden Plains Shire Council’s Environment Strategy (2019-2027) Golden Plains Shire residents are encouraged to contribute to Golden Plains Shire Council’s Environment Strategy (20192027), to ensure community aspirations are reflected in Council’s vision, plans and actions for the local environment. The Environment Strategy 2019-2027 (‘the Strategy’) will encompass both the ‘built’ aspects of Golden Plains Shire, including water, amenity, emissions and economic land-use, as well as the ‘natural’ parts of the environment, such as biodiversity, fire management, pest plants and animals, and sustainable agriculture. The aim of the Strategy is to create a framework to help Council and the community to best manage the various environments of Golden Plains Shire, and guide projects and decision-making. Councillor Helena Kirby, Mayor of Golden Plains Shire, said the Strategy will strive to find balance between meeting the needs of our communities, with Council’s responsibility to preserve and protect its natural environments. “Golden Plains Shire is lucky to have such a wide range of wonderful spaces and environments, as well as passionate and committed residents, businesses and community groups, who care deeply about their environment and its future. “Managing natural and built environments is one of the four strategic objections in our Council Plan; a document that was developed in close conjunction with the community, and this Strategy, and the community engagement around it, will all support that objective. “We would love to hear from the community about what is important to them and what their ideas and concerns are, in relation to the diverse environments of Golden Plains Shire. Community feedback will provide us with insight into what matters to our communities and allow the Strategy to benefit from the extensive local knowledge of our residents. “Council will offer a number of opportunities for com-

munity members to contribute to the Strategy, including workshops and conversation posts across the Shire, and an online survey. “Feedback will be collated and then feed into the development of the draft Environment Strategy 2019-2027, which will be placed on public exhibition, so that community members can review the document and provide feedback should they wish to do so. “I encourage residents to take up one of the many opportunities to contribute to the Strategy – the more community members who participate in its development, the more refined, thorough and reflective of community needs and values the Strategy will be. “This Strategy is incredibly important to Council, as our natural and built environments are part of what makes our Shire so special. We have established an Environment Strategy Steering Committee, including Golden Plains Shire Councillors Evans and Rowe. This group will help make sure the Strategy is comprehensive, well-communicated, reflective of community values and Council’s environmental goals,” she said. How residents can get involved: Community workshops 3 June, The Well, Smythesdale, 9.30am-11.30am 3 June, Bannockburn Cultural Centre, Main Hall, 2.00pm-4.00pm Conversation posts 2 June, Golden Plains Farmers Market, Bannockburn 16 June, Smythesdale Country Market, Smythesdale Online survey Open from 30 May to 20 June. Colic in horses

printed on carbon neutral paper

Boy George, it’s all in the eye’s. When an owner calls up about their animal having an eye issue such as a red or mucky eye, squinting, rubbing at the eye or excess tearing, we advise the best option is always to have the eye checked. This is because the problem could range from a simple irritation or conjunctivitis, through to a corneal ulcer or eye cancer and the many options in between!

Colic is a term used to describe abdominal pain. There are several different types of colic, ranging from mild and inconsequential to life-threatening. This is why all cases of abdominal pain should be taken seriously right from the onset. Colic symptoms have been associated with diet, feeding practices, exercise patterns and parasite control.

The eye is robust but delicate and it has many areas, layers and structures all of which can become diseased, damaged or injured. In this case, ‘George’ damaged his cornea - the outermost layer of the eye. This case report includes progress picutres from the day George was diagnosed with his problem to the recovery photo, and the colour photographs help to visualise the problem. If reading this in the Bannockburn/Inverleigh newsletter, you can see the coloured pictures through our facebook page link to the newsletter or on our website under newsletters http://www.bannockburnvet.com.au Georges’ worried mum brought him down as he had a runny eye and was squinting. Using a special stain (called fluorescein), we were able to identify an area of his cornea that had been damaged - this area absorbed the stain and turned the area bright green. We could also tell the erosion had gone relatively deep as the edges of the erosion were slightly lifted off and a deficit could be seen centrally. We called this Day 0.

Spasmodic Colic: occurs when the bowel is contracting in an abnormal manner creating painful spasms. Impaction Colic: describes when the intestine becomes blocked by a firm mass of food. Gas Colic: gas accumulates in the stomach as well as the intestines. As gas builds up, the gut distends, causing abdominal pain. Sand Colic: occurs in horses that are fed on the ground or housed in very sandy soil. Pain or colic being associated with a build-up of sand in the gastro intestinal tract. Enteritis/Colitis: Some cases of abdominal pain are due to inflammation of the small (entertitis) or large (colitis) intestines. These are serious medical cases and require immediate veterinary attention.

The cornea is the clear layer at the front of the eye. The cornea is comprised of three layers - the epithelium, the stroma and the descemet’s membrane. If the thin epithelium layer is damaged, the lesion is known as a corneal abrasion. Its presence may not be visible without the use of a special stain. If the damage extends deeper down to the stroma, the cornea may appear cloudy and the lesion may be visible. This deeper lesion is known as a corneal ulcer and is the type of lesion George had. Injury extending down to the deepest layer of decemet’s membrane is very serious as it can lead to rupture of the inner layer of the eye causing the eye to collapse. The epithelial layer and stroma will stain green, but descemet’s membrane does not take up any stain and so the most central area will remain free of stain. This lesion is known as a descemetocele and it is a warning sign to vets that damage is quite extensive and may require aggressive treatment to prevent eye rupture, and this is the reason why we use fluorescein stain in all cases. The most common cause of corneal ulcers is trauma, for instance running into something, the dog rubbing its eye along carpet, a cat scratch or a foreign object such as a grass seed or dirt (especially if trapped under the third eyelid). They can also be secondary to another disease process such as dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) where the tear gland does not produce enough tears to keep the eye lubricated. All eye lesions can be painful causing the dog to squint and rub its eye. The eye may be red and inflamed.

printed on carbon neutral paper

Signs of colic: *Turning the head toward the flank *Pawing at the ground *Lack of appetite *Repeatedly curling the upper lip *Stretching out as if to urinate *Lying down more than usual *Getting up and lying down repeatedly

advertising 29

Treatment depends on the severity, duration and cause of the ulcer - obviously removing a trapped grass seed is required if one is identified. Medication that may be prescribed include and antibiotic ointment or drops, atropine drops which dilates the pupil to prevent pressure building up in the eye, and pain relief/ anti-inflammatories. Sometimes more advanced lesions may require surgery to aid healing. In George’s case the ulcer was treated medically, revisits were required every 3 days to ensure treatment was effective and allowed us some great progress photos! By day 10 of treatment, the ulcer had healed and no further treatment was required!

Signs your horse is in more severe pain: *Sweating *Rapid respiration *Rolling Prevention of colic: *Feed a good quality diet *Ensure constant access to clean water *Make all dietary changes gradually *Check hay, bedding and the environment for any toxic substances (eg. mould, poisonous plants, twine, plastic bags) *Control intestinal parasites *Implement regular dental care What to do If you suspect colic in your horse: *Call the clinic immediately *Remove all food and water *Attempt to walk the horse slowly *DO NOT give any medication unless instructed by our veterinarian.

“THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH” from Rev. Phil Jacobson St. Pauls Anglican Church. May 10th was the date the church refers to as Ascension Sunday, the commemoration of Jesus ascending in heaven? At first glance, this language seems at odds with our understanding of the universe. In the primitive view of the universe, “up” to heaven made sense, and “down” to hell made sense. However, the word “up” is a relative word on a spherical planet set in this immense cosmos. “Up” when standing in Galilee is a very different direction from that when one stands on the mighty rock of Uluru at the centre of Australia. What then can we make of the ascension story? First we need to realise that “up” and “ascension” are images that speak of Jesus. But there’s a paradox here, namely: Jesus went away from his friends so that he might be always with them. Whatever else we acknowledge on Ascension Day it’s this: It’s not about Jesus leaving us but becoming a part of our lives in a new and radical way. Unless we grab hold of this truth of this metaphor, the whole story will remain either an empty myth, or one that pushes Jesus and heaven to the extremities, far out of human reach. In the ascension, Jesus moved from the time-bound to the timeless, from spatial limitation to unlimited availability, from earthly shadows to eternal light. For eternity he is around about us, “closer than our breathing, and nearer than hands or feet.”

It’s impossible to find the right words, or even barely adequate words, to speak of the mystery of the heaven which overlaps, underlays, and interleaves, our earthly life. It’s beyond words. As we use Biblical imagery, the idea of “up” might be confusing but the word “cloud” may be more helpful. St Luke, both in his Gospel and in his book of Acts, speaks of Jesus being gathered into a cloud. In Biblical metaphors the cloud represents the intimate, holy Presence of God. The holy cloud is the shekinah. The shekinah leads the children of Israel out of captivity. The shekinah is over the mountain when Moses receives the ten commandments. In the story of Jesus’ transfiguration on the mountain, the shekinah of God covers Jesus and the three disciples. So when, in the event we call the ascension, the cloud is mentioned by Luke, it represents Jesus being gathered into the eternal presence of God. This leads to a second level of meaning in the story: Jesus seated at the right hand of God. In St Paul’s writings, and in the appendix to the Gospel of Mark, and in the historic creeds, the ascended Jesus sits at the “right hand” of God. Again we have a brilliant metaphor. The picture of Jesus sitting at the right hand of God is meant to convey the closeness of Jesus to God, and the authority his life and teaching now command.

He was humble and misunderstood. He chose to seem weak by taking the path of forgiveness and non-violence. He was hounded by powerful enemies yet raised no hand against them. He blessed little children, blasted hypocrites, touched lepers, spent some night alone in the open, claimed that God was astoundingly generous and could be absolutely trusted. He was tried by a “kangaroo court” and lynched by the cruellest known method. Yet he forgave those who did these things to him. It is this person, only this man, with his particular beliefs and values, who is at God’s “right hand”. His attributes have the stamp of God’s authority on them. Ascension Day says: Trust this Jesus and you will never be let down. Never. And you will never be alone. For the “ascended” Jesus is closer to you than he was when he was in the flesh. And, He is with you all the way. To trust Christ Jesus and to follow him is to go on that journey which begins and continues in the close fellowship of the Spirit of Christ, and which ends up (even for you and me!) at the right hand of God.

So, keep the faith!

INVERLEIGH BOWLS CLUB SATURDAY PENNANT TEAM GBR PREMIERS-”DIVISION 5” 2018 This year, Inverleigh Bowls Club had another very successful year in the Geelong Bowls Region Pennant Competion. The Saturday Division 5 Players put in hard all year and again were successful in not only making the finals, but won the Grand final from fourth position. As you can see from the photo below, all the players were very happy to be taking home a Premiership Medallion after beating Norlane, who had been top of the ladder all season. Well done to all the players. The midweek Division 4 Pennant Team also made it to the finals, but bowed out in the first round. Midweek Division 8, mostly comprising new players, can also hold their heads high for their efforts.

Inverleigh is the smallest club (based on player numbers) in the GBR, and to finish the year with these achievements is a real success. The club will continue social bowls on the 2nd & 4th friday night (under lights) each month. Locals are alway welcome to come along for the social company and to try their hand at this great game. It looks easy, but has its challenges, and players are rewarded for the efforts they contribute. Two new players this year, coupled with existing players, won places in the pairs competitions, and to say they were exstatic would be an understatment. So come along and give it a go, you will surprise yourself and you too can experience the jubilation that only Bowls can bring.
