Peter’s Editorial I enjoyed my recent shift on the Progress Association Table on Polling Day at the Inverleigh Primary School, meeting many of you locals and putting faces to names. It has been 1 year since I started as Editor of the Leigh News. Thanks to you all for supplying articles and updates. Please keep them coming. As always, we take the opportunity to update the Inverleigh Murgheboluc and Wingeel Local Phone Book whenever an election is held. If you missed adding your current details to the phone book master list, members of the Progress Association will be at the Inverleigh Store for the next couple of Saturday mornings, to update details for anyone who wasn’t able to make it to Inverleigh School on Polling Day. Inverleigh Public Hall 150th Birthday History Notes 17/3/1910 - A letter was received from the IOR (Independent Order Of Rechabites) asking if the Committee would allow the hall to be used for skating. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the President and Secretary, who would investigate possible damage and make a decision. 14/5/1910 - Skating would be ‘decidedly injurious to the floor and walls’. Permission denied. 16/7/1910 - Thanks were sent to Mr Alderson for painting the flag pole, to Mr Rowarth for mending the flag and to Mr Miller for adjusting the flagpole irons. (The flagpole and its problems feature throughout the minutes and are still in consideration today, with the current the Hall Committee working on its reerection.) 5/7 /1913 - A request for picture shows at the hall was denied because the Insurance Co. required a guarantee from the Committee,

impossible to provide, that the construction and working of the lighting apparatus would not increase the risk of fire. The committee undertook to find out what was being done in other towns. (Eventually an extra rate was paid to the Insurance Co to enable picture shows to be held in the hall.) 5/7/1913 - It was reported that the illustrated papers were being repeatedly taken from the Library. It was decided, on the motion of Mr McDonald, sec by Mr McCallum, that the matter be placed in the hands of the Constable Sargeant.’ Thank you to the people who have already made donations towards the purchase of 2 seats for the front of the hall. If you would like to contribute to the fund to buy our Hall its 150th birthday present, please contact Christine Windle, Hall Committee Secretary, on 0403 267 286

INVERLEIGH’S TOWN ENTRANCES 6th Update: Full Steam Ahead, and you choose a lettering style!

The Inverleigh Progress Association has decided to begin on the project, and we are full steam ahead, to finish it as soon as possible. We have recently received the generous $5,000 grant from the Bendigo Community Bank at Winchelsea, and are soon to receive @ $10,000 from various Golden Plains Grants. Funding from other sources is still on the agenda, as unfortunately TAC via Vicroads have indicated that Inverleigh Town Entrances won’t be funded through integrating it into a Driver Fatigue Project on the Hamilton Highway. Our highly acclaimed stonemason, David Long is coming down this week, for his 3rd visit to source local stone… Interested in having yours as part of this enduring

landmark? (Let Eliza know asap). Thanks to the 9 landowners who are already keen! Discussions with Council and submissions (including plans and diagrams) to Vicroads are underway. We are still looking for lettering ideas. A few styles for you to vote on were at our table at Election Day in Invereleigh on 2/7/16. This will be finalised before the wall is built (as they need to be built into the wall). If you want to input, (Contact Eliza, asap). Your (the Inverleigh community) feedback and ideas have heavily influenced this project so far, and we continue to welcome your comments. Eliza Peel, (nee Barry) 0438351483 or elizabarry@hotmail.com (On behalf of the Inverleigh Progress Association)

INVERLEIGH RSL’s NEW WHEEL As you drive through Inverleigh, visitors and locals are constantly reminded of the contribution and sacrifice local families have made to conflicts and peacekeeping operations for over a century – the memorials at the western end of town, the avenue of honour and the RSL building next to the hall. Until recently only two of the three services were represented outside the front of the RSL – the Navy depicted by a WW2 mine and the Army represented by a 25 pounder field artillary piece. Now the Air Force is represented by a B-24 Liberator wheel assembly.

Although one might think it has fallen from a passing aircraft, in fact it’s acquisition followed an application for a part from an aircraft from Inverleigh RSL to the B-24 Liberator Memorial at the Aviation Museum, Werribee. Sunday 5th June saw the official hand-over of the wheel by David Miller from the B-24 Liberator Memorial at Werribee. Local RSL ladies provided those present with a sumptious morning tea which served as lunch for most of those present while they shared stories of years gone by and hope for the years ahead. As time goes by there is an urgent need for a younger generation to take on an active role in the branch to ensure it’s

continued presence in the district. We were also delighted to have 90 year old Nat Eichler (pictured below) visiting from the Liberator Museum. During WW2 Nat flew in a Liberator as a wireless operator/gunner and has been a driving force in the establishment and operation of the museum for many years.

Having a wheel assembly display is rather unique as most memorials consist of a propeller or aircraft frame of some type so this new display has created much interest and attention from the local community and travellers passing through the township and it now stands as a monument to the RAAF personnel who served in times of conflict alongside our Army and Navy counterparts. Many thanks to Ralph, John, Scotty and various other locals as well as the team who went to Werribee to pick it up and getting it to Ralph and Linda’s for storage. Also a huge thank you to Rhys of RJW Engineering who, for no cost, constructed the steel fabrication to house the assembly. The B-24 Liberator Memorial group in Werribee was formed in 1988 with the stated purpose of “Restoring a Liberator aircraft as a memorial to the 20,000 R.A.A.F. personnel who flew and serviced them during WWII”. Time passed and it wasn’t until 1992 that they discovered a Liberator, Serial No. A-72 176’s fuselage was located on a farm in Gippsland. It had been used as

a residence for 7 years since purchased in 1947. It was in a sorry state with corrosion, missing parts, trees and shrubs growing internally and blocking access. However this group had a vision that this aircraft would “Become live again” and serve as that Memorial. Today that vision is approaching 95% complete. A search was commenced for the rest of the aircraft components, wings, engines, instruments etc. The undercarriage leg donated to the Inverleigh RSL was found in a lake at Tocumwal, the main training

base for Liberator crews during the war. The wings and fuselage were transported to a hangar near Werribee, generously leased to us by Melbourne Water. The group then began recruiting hangar volunteers, members, sponsors, technical advisers etc. This has resulted in a current membership of about 400 with 35 regular hangar volunteers attending 2 - 3 days a week. In addition to the Liberator we have a partly restored C.A.C. Boomerang and a replica Airspeed Oxford being actively manufactured. The project is unique insofar it is in continual restoration work and the hangar volunteers are only too pleased to show visitors their work and discuss their part in the project. The Hangar was built in 1942 and reflects the atmosphere of that time The hangar is located on the Princes Highway and the corner of Farm Road, Werribee. We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 9.30am until 3.30pm. Entry is by $5 donation (all our funding is by donations). Groups of 20 plus can be catered for outside these hours by contacting the Secretary, Mrs Judith Gilbert, Phone No. 03 9734 0094 or Hangar Phone 03 9731 1263. Thanks to Lyell Reeves from Banno News for his article and associated photos.

St Paul’s Anglican Church

of the worth of the individual, a place of non-judgement and valuing the worth that everybody brings to each other. And we do this recognising that we’re but part of a far “bigger picture” that encompasses all of us. And we struggle honestly to find meaning (and give expression to) this “bigger picture”. That’s one of the reasons we’ve introduced the distribution of the Sunday Address through email. This is a copy of the address that’s given each Sunday as we, as a community, search out the meaning behind the Sunday bible readings that applies to us in this community. Hopefully it’s a gentle way to encourage people to think about the “bigger picture”. If you would like to receive these reflections/thoughts simply send an email to cameocc@westnet.com.au with “Subscribe” in the subject line. There’s also an open invitation to pop in on any Sunday and see what happens! We now have a regular Sunday School session with lots of activities each week including craft activities, so there’s always something to take home. All this takes place at the back of the church so the children stay close at hand. Don’t forget, we meet each Sunday at 9.30am All the best Phil Jacobson Minister, St Paul’s Anglican Church

I’ve often wondered how many people skip sections like this when they see the word “Church”! Probably quite a few!! If you’re still reading, then you’re probably not one of those people but, given the mess we’ve often got ourselves into over the last several years in particular, I can understand why people do quickly move to the next page. Sometimes as a “church” we forget that we’re allowed to be the people that we really are. Sometimes we try to be the people we’re not, and so we become artificial and false. Not a good look by anyone’s standards! And to make matters worse, everyone and their dog sees through it. Within St Paul’s, we’re trying to recreate the good things that sometimes we’ve lost because we’ve tried too hard to be something that we’re really not. We’re actually trying not to talk about “church”, but instead, we are trying to be a place of support and encouragement, a place of acceptance and recognition

AUSSIE! AUSSIE! AUSSIE! Citizenship Ceremony for

Dolores Quinlivian 26.6.2016

Today is another chapter in my life’s journey as an “Aussie”.

In 1981, I arrived in Australia for the first time for a one month holiday where I stayed with the Quinlivian family at the ‘Farm’ in Wingeel. I met the intended in-laws and made some wonderful new friends, and did lots of sight-seeing. It was all fascinating and I fell in love with the country and the flexible way of life. Mel and I got engaged on Boxing Day after being pen pals for three years. I then had to return to my home in Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia, as I had to get back to work as a Public Servant working for the Government and we had to do things correctly. My parents and family were so thrilled to hear the

great news that I had finally made up my mind to settle down, but the only problem was to have to leave Malaysia and my loved ones, then again it’s part and parcel of life. On April 29th 1983 it was time to leave my dad, seven siblings, and friends. All quite difficult decisions but I looked forward to joining my future husband-to-be and new family. Mel and I got married on a cold winter day in June 1983. It was my very special day, and to this day I am so Blessed with everything. The next year Raquel was born and a couple of years later Jason. That made my motherhood life perfect and contented. Over the next 33 plus years I have made lots of good friends and I am truly Blessed. I would like to thank everyone for coming and sharing this wonderful day and also to Liz McDonald for helping me with the papers and forms to fill in, and support all along the way. Thank you Mel , my forever best friend and husband, my two adult children Raquel and Jason, and those who were unable to attend this special event. I am looking forward now to being an “Aussie” officially. Thanks, yours truly, Dolores On behalf of all the citizens of Inverleigh and District, our sincere congratulations to Delores on becoming an official Australian Citizen. You are a much loved member of our communitee, along with your family. Many thanks to Dagmar Cations for the photo above, and to Liz McDonald for her assistance to Delores during the process of citizenship. (Editor) Congratulations to

THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE Christine Windle, Garden Gate Nursery, Inverleigh

Pruning – Cuts that Count Pruning is a gardening task which helps to shape, renew, invigorate, protect, and promote flowers and fruit. Timing is important, with the general rule being to prune after flowering for evergreen plants and during the dormant winter period for deciduous plants. I love the slash and kerbash that secateurs, pruning saws and long handles cutters provide. I have been accused of going too far when the family looks at a large shrub which is now only a metre high. Others I know are so timid with their pruning that they may as well have stayed inside reading a book. The secret is to make pruning purposeful, so you have a rationale to control your instincts and inform your cuts. Be aware of your plant’s growth habit. Some plants, such as English lavenders, won’t recover if you prune below green growth. Prune lightly from an early stage so that new low growth is constantly stimulated. Other plants, such as Allard’s lavender, produce new growth from old wood and can be pruned low. Never prune a plant below the graft. Some Basic Pruning Tips 1.Use sharp tools and select the right sized implement for the job. Clean tools between plants if there is a risk of spreading disease. 2.Cut out dead and diseased wood and any branches that cross over or rub against others.

3.Lots of shrubs and trees just need a tidy up and a tip prune to promote bushiness. 4.To shape a plant, look for a bud pointing in the direction you want the branch to grow. Cut on a 45˚ diagonal immediately above the bud. 5.When pruning a branch where it joins, cut just outside the branch collar rather than hard up against the trunk. . Large branches need to be undercut so that the bark won’t tear down if the weight of the branch drags it down. 6.Plants can flower or fruit on old wood, new wood or two year old wood. Roses flower on new wood, so prune hard to promote lots of new growth. Peaches and nectarines fruit on two year old wood so cut a third of the laterals back hard each year. Apples fruit on spurs along the trunk and old branches as well as on two year old wood, so the pruning focus is on shape. 7.Prune to allow air and sunlight to penetrate your fruit trees. Prune Citrus trees a metre up from the ground to avoid humidity and fungal diseases. 8.Keep fruiting branches to an angle of about 65 ˚ from the trunk, to allow for the weight of the fruit. 9.Small cuts do not need any wound treatment. It is now generally thought that large cuts do better if left unsealed, allowing the plant’s natural defences to come into play. 10.Winter pruning of fruit trees stimulates vigorous new growth. Summer pruning promotes less vigorous growth and keeps the trees smaller.

We are holding an Orchard Pruning Workshop at our nursery – Sunday July 17th, 9 – 12.30, $35, theory and guided practice with vase shaped trees in our orchard. Morning tea and notes included. JULY 2016 CALENDAR

This months calendar picture shows a team of Australian draught horses about to plough a field ,sometime in the early 1900s. In the early days of settlement, horses were brought to australia to do various tasks in a variety of conditions particularly stock and cart duties.Bullocks were used for heavy duty work up until the gold rush when the development of the agricultural industries and the need for faster load movements (bullocks are very slow ) made horses a more popular choice. The Australian draught horse was developed over the years by the the selective breeding of different horses, from Clydesdales, Shire, Punch and Pecheron work horses also including lighter horses that were more suited to Australian conditions and soil types .The breed was accepted and are still bred today and are commonly used in ploughing competitions and still do work

on some small farms. The Austalian draught horse worked the land from about 1850 to 1950(over 100 years) by which time tractors, developed during the war years, became diesel powered and cheaper and easier to use and eventually replaced all work horses on most farms in australia. A few years back my wife and I had the memorable pleasure of seeing a team of Australian

small field next to the road. The ploughman only had a couple of commands to the lead horse which the others followed. When turning ninety degrees each individual horse had to pace itself accordingly , with the inner horse almost at a standstill with the outer horse going at quite a pace. The other striking thing was the jingle of the harness and the occasional voice command was all that there was to hear. The development of the steam engine provided a reason to compare the out put of horses with that of engines that would replace them . A metric horsepower is the force needed to lift 75 kg, 1metre in 1second and is equal to 735.5 watts and although a horses output can be draught horses ploughing a field in a lot higher it was worked out that Masons Road between Bannockover a sustained period this would burn and Inverleigh. SHELFORD PRIMARY TAKES ATHLETICS TITLE SOVEREIGN HILL EXCURSION

Recently our whole school went on an excursion to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. After some exploring upon arrival, the staff took the children to the Education Centre for a trip into the past, while the parents had coffee. We also took part in mine tours, 1850’s style bowling, a lolly making demonstration, candle dipping, and the obligatory visit to the confectioners. This is important in laying the foundations for our 150th celebrations in November. My thanks to all of the parents who accompanied us and helped to transport the children.

On Friday the 3rd of June the whole school went to Sovereign Hill for a school excursion. When we arrived we made our way to the Education Centre and had the opportunity to dress up in olden day clothing from the Gold Rush era. We were also shown how people

lived during the gold rush days. We were given a demonstration of how clothes were washed using a wash board and how they were dried using a wringer. Following this class we made our way to the gold panning. We found lots of specks of gold. I was a little disappointed as I was hoping to find a gold nugget and become rich! Charlie, Grade 5 On Friday the 3rd of June the whole school and parent helpers went to Sovereign Hill. Everyone went on the Red Hill Mine Tour. When we visited the Red Hill Mine we saw the second biggest gold nugget in the whole world which was found in Australia. The first biggest gold nugget was also found in Australia. After we finished in the Red Hill Mine Tour we went to the stream to gold panning. Almost everybody found specks of gold. Maddy, Grade 4 On Friday the 3rd of June the whole school travelled to an amazing place called Sovereign Hill. When we arrived our first visit was to the Education Centre where we dressed up in olden day clothes and were shown the way people lived back in the gold rush days. We learnt lots of incredible facts. We travelled to the “Trapped” underground mine tour on a tram. My best friends Joh and Charlie and I sat at the very front of the tram. It was tremendously dark. We learnt how the mine collapsed and filled with water underground. Only 5 people survived and they were trapped underground for about 4 days. Then we went off in groups and did our own exiting activities. Stevie, Grade 5

Lumps and Bumps National Desexing Month

Lumps in dogs and cats occur in all shapes and sizes and in all locations ranging from the skin, mouth, toes and eyelids. Lumps and bumps are more common in older pets, but that’s not to say that younger pets don’t get them. We recommend that you check your dog and cat’s body on a regular basis, this will allow you to become more familiar with your pets body and you will recognize any changes that occur.

Once again, Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic is happy to be involved in the Desex your pet month. During the month of July we are offering 20% off all desexing. Desexing is a day stay procedure. Our Vets operate every week day. Contact the clinic on 5281 1221 to book your pet in for surgery.

Rabbit Facts

If you feel something unusual, notice a new lump or notice that a lump has changed size or shape we recommend that you have it looked at by one of our veterinarians. Although most lumps are harmless it is impossible to tell what sort of lump it is without testing .

What kind of lumps are there? Lipomas - or fatty lumps are probably the most common lump found on dogs and are more common in obese pets. These are benign cancers that grow quite slowly and rarely spread. Warts are more common in older animals and look like a small skin tag. They can be irritating and in some cases require removal. Sebaceous Cysts occur when a pore or hair follicle gets clogged. These are swelling filled with a creamy matter. Normally it will gradually get smaller until it goes away completely. If the cyst suddenly grows very large you need to seek veterinary attention. Histiocytomas are a red button like lump that are usually found on young pets. They usually go away as rapidly as they appear but we recommend you have any lump checked.

Rabbits can be easily house trained to use a litter tray! It is easier to house train a desexed rabbit. Rabbits have teeth that continually grow throughout their life, poor diet can often result in their front teeth becoming overgrown. Rabbits have good night vision They can see things to the side, behind or above them without even moving their heads.

Mammary Tumours are amongst the most aggressive foms of cancer. In most cases surgical removal of mammary tumours are advisable. Mast Cell Tumours are a type of cancer that can take on many different appearances. It is difficult to tell if and when they change from a benign cancer to a malignant cancer, so all mast cell tumours should be removed.

Types of Cancers Benign - Benign lumps may grow bigger but not spread. These growths can cause problems if they continue to grow, such as restricting movement. Malignant - More aggressive lumps which grow and can spread through the body, affecting organs such as lungs and liver. Malignant growths must be removed before they spread.

printed on carbon neutral paper

Diagnosis - You can not tell if a lump is cancer, just by looking at it. Our veterinarians will examine the lump to see if they think it is suspicious. Some cancers make animals unwell - if your pet has a lump and shows signs of illness it is important for you to mention it to our vets. Fine Needle Aspirate - Using a fine needle our vets obtain some cells from

the lump to examine under a microscope. This will help rule out different types of lumps such as an abscess, a fatty lump or cyst, or a solid mass. This procedure can be carried out without sedation and is not invasive. When a solid mass is suspected we recommend a biopsy be performed under general anaesthetic and the sample be sent away for analysis by a veterinary pathologist. If the mass is malignant, our vets may want to make sure there is no sign of spread and to do so they may need to take a radiograph or perform an ultrasound examination.

Treatment - Many lumps, even if cancerous or malignant, can be surgically removed and cured, whatever the age of your pet. With any lump it is best to have it seen as soon as possible, as even harmless looking lumps can turn out to be serious. Another reason for urgent attention is that a small lump is much easier and less invasive to remove than a large one. In all cases, early detection and diagnosis is the key to planning the right treatment.

Domestic rabbits normally live around eight to ten years. When a rabbit is very happy, it expresses its joy by jumping up into the air, twisting and flicking its feet and head. This movement is known as a binky! Rabbits have good memories and get to know where everything is in their territory Rabbits use their long ears to pick up sounds from every direction and can hear in two directions at once!

Rat Facts

Rats take care of injured and sick rats in their group Rats have excellent memories. Once they learn a navigation route, they wont forget it. Rats make happy laughter sounds when they play. Rats’ tails help them to balance, communicate and regulate body temperature. When happy, rats have been observed to chatter or grind their teeth. This is often accompanied by vibrating eyes.

Last month’s Leigh News had an article from Andrea Bolton describing her recent experience with a Motor vehicle accident that happened near Common Rd on the Hamilton Highway. Her comments and actions on the day are an insight as to what you might be faced with at any time while being a road user or just being near a road. As road users and community members we try to help were we can to the best of our abilities and often it is in those critical first moments when lives can be saved or disasters adverted by the actions of people who are first on the scene. Andrea is one of these people and as a community we should be grateful that she got involved and helped where she could. If I might add just a few points that will help people understand what happens at incidents like this when the emergency services arrive. The first thing to do when confronted with an accident is call 000 and try to give an accurate description of what you can see, but more importantly an accurate location so that Emergency services know where to go. Streets, roads or property numbers are ideal. Once Emergency services arrive, and it might take a while depending on where the accident is located, they will set up a control point and delegate an incident controller. This could be Police, Fire or SES.

They then work out what is required in the way of Ambulance, fire or Police and traffic management, The likes of Defibrillators are often carried in emergency services vehicle’s. Not all but some, and the incident controller will be aware of these types of equipment and where they are located. They also work out the best way of dealing with the clean up and what other agencies might be needed such as power or water. The main thing when helping is not to become an accident victim yourself and accident scenes by their nature are unsafe and unpredictable, so please try and assess if what your about to do will endanger you or place you in a situation that you cannot cope with. Leaking fuel, sparking or smoking cars, injuries to people possibly involved are examples. If you think that it too risky then stay clear and inform the first Emergency services on scene with what you have observed and it should make it easier for them to do their task. Overall we have great support from the public and there have been many examples of these people who helped early on at an accident have made a big difference to injured people and informed us of potential hazards. Thanks for your support and hopefully we won’t see any many more like this. From Inverleigh Rural Fire Brigade, Ewen Peel. Secretary

If you have an iphone, go to the App Store and add Emergency Plus. This Application gives you quick access to emergency phone numbers and will connect you with one tap on the screen. It also has the added advantage of giving you your GPS location, which you can pass on to emergency to provide a quick and accurate location of yourself and the incident you may be involved with. It’s Free, so do it now! Peter Trevaskis (Editor)

INVERLEIGH CRICKET CLUB UPDATE With July kicking in it is that time of the year we start to prepare ourselves for the upcoming cricket season. At our recent AGM we have elected a new committee. With some of the old faces still helping out it is great to also see some new faces on board as well. Marcus Warton will continue as president for the upcoming season. Sean Justin has taken over the Vice Presidents role. Donovan Convery-Oborne continues his great work as Secretary as well as Gail Platt also continuing her role as Treasurer. Scott Bell has stepped up to take on Junior Co-Ordinator for the upcoming season and Daniel Reid, Jack Purcell and David Peel are the general committee. David has also been appointed senior coach/ captain for the 2016/17 season. As a club at this stage we will be fielding a 1st XI side as well as a second side which will participate in the one day competition. Plans are already underway for some pre-season training sessions with two already booked for Sunday July 31st and Sunday August 7th at 11am at North Geelong Indoor Centre.

All current players are expected to attend the first session and any new players are more than welcome to attend. Information in regards to junior cricket will begin to filter through in the coming months, but on the back of a strong junior program in 2015/16 we are hopeful of continuing along that path. David will be stepping down as Milo Cricket Co-Ordinator for the coming season due to coaching commitments and with having 40 plus participants last season it would be a real shame to see this program unable to be run. This is a great opportunity for a few parents to help out and ensure the program continues on. Please contact Scott or David if you are interested in helping out. We must finish by thanking our sponsors for their support: Stockdale and Leggo Bannockburn, Golden Plains Supreme Meat, Inverleigh Farm Supplies and Ray Goodman Transport. Any information regarding the upcoming season (junior or senior) can be found by calling the following people. Marcus Warton (President) 0400 199 309 David Peel (Coach) 0424715834 Scott Bell (Jnr Co-ordinator) 0409 260 055

“NetSetGo”

The girls have enthusiastically participated in a variety of fun activities during the past nine weeks, building friendships with other girls within our community and becoming both stronger and confident in their ability to throw and catch a ball. Our last NetSetGo will be on Wedesday 13th of July. I would like to thank Sarah Goodman, Simone Brown, Tia McEwan and Lucy Haintz for their assistance in making this program a success. Niomi Haintz

FOOTBALL REPORT The Under 10’s and Under 12’s have been playing well during this last month. There is no ladder to show their progress, however they have been performing at their best. When the Under 10’s have a win, the club song is sung very enthusiastically, putting the AFL Teams to shame. The Under 14’s are on top of their ladder and going along quite nicely in their division. The Under 18’s are back in the competition after 3 years unable to have a team and have had a couple of wins so far. The team is made up of quite a few players younger than 18, as Inverleigh are not able to form an Under 16 side this year. Congratulation to these younger players for standing up to the plate in this higher division.

Senior’s and Reserve’s are on top of their respective ladders (on percentage), with Bannockburn a very close second. The next matches will be played against Bannockburn, with the winner being rightfully the top placed side. This year, Inverleigh have been lucky to be selected to host the AFL Victoria/Worksafe Game of the round on July 24th (round 15). Please note the change of the date to Sunday 24th July. This day is sure to be a huge day with AFL personalities and a special kid’s area to enjoy the fun AFL Activities. More details to come in the next week’s footy record. Good luck to all teams playing.

GO HAWKS!

TEESDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL Staffing announcements As we come to the end of the term, there are a number of staffing announcements to acknowledge. Year 3/4 teacher, Caitlin Longmire, has been successful in gaining a new contract at our school till the end of the year. Caitlin is a highly regarded staff member who is delivering a quality program to her class. Deb Smith has been appointed to a role in Year 1/2 as an Integration Aide till the end of the year. Deb is well known to many parents, as she is already working in the Out of School Hours Care program and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. Reading Recovery teacher, Karen McKenzie, has completed her contract at mid-year. Karen has worked in a part-time role and we thank Karen for her contribution to support improved learning outcomes for individual Year 1 students. In Asian Studies – Japanese cultural program, Education support staff member, Kanako Moroney, decided not to take up the new contract offered. We thank Kanako for her previous support of the program. Japanese teacher, Olga Fox, has agreed to continue in her teaching role with us, every second Monday. Out of School Hours Care Coordinator, Renae Fatone, begins her Maternity leave at the end of term. We wish Renae and Ash every happiness as they await the arrival of their baby. We are pleased to announce that Melanie Linguey has been appointed as our Out of School Hours Care Coordinator for the remainder of the year. We welcome Melanie to the role and I’m sure parents utilising the service will make themselves known to Melanie. Integration Aide, Helen Daffy, will be concluding her contract with us the week after the term break. Helen has been working since the start of the year, two hours a day in the 3/4 class, supporting a student with additional needs. We thank Helen for her time with us. All of the above staff have added to the quality of our learning environment. School, like all organisations, is continually evolving and changing to address new needs and funding. We thank all staff for their continued efforts. Student Led Conferences Student Led Conferences (SLC) were held during the last week of term. The SLC, together with the mid-year reports, provide a strong framework to know where your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers and students look forward to the SLC as an enhanced opportunity to have a shared discussion of your child’s learning progress. Sporting in Schools extra curricula activity – Term 3 The Sporting in Schools clinics provide a wonderful opportunity for our students in Years 3-6 to participate in a free, four week sporting skill program. This year we have been fortunate to have accredited coaches in Soccer and Gymnastics conduct the programs. The term 3 Sporting in Schools program is the last for the year as schools are only eligible to apply for three terms. Our term 3 Sporting in Schools clinics will be Hockey.

Werribee Mansion Report from Year 3/4 In Humanities, 3/4 have been learning about the history of everyday life in Australia. On Thursday the 16th of June we visited the Werribee Mansion to see how the Chirnside family lived in the mid- 1800s. We explored the farm yard, lake and grotto, had a tour of the mansion and did some hand washing in the laundry. It was great to see how different life was in the 1800s!

If you would like to know more about our school, please phone us during school hours on 5281 5218 or head to our website at: www.teesdaleps.vic.edu.au • It’s not okay to be away, except when it’s school holidays! • Don’t forget to visit The Mudbrick Café next term! • A safe and happy term break to all families!

It was a Cork Compressor

Last months mystery object was from a time when all liquid, whether medicinal or recreational, was stored in corked bottles or jars. It is a cork compressor. This compressor is large enough to compress two wine bottle corks at the one time. The tool was essential in pharmacies until the early 20th century with three or four different capacities for the 2, 4 and 8 ounce sized bottles.
