Why a Foundation? “Education is simply the soul of society as it passes from one generation to another” Attributed to GK Chesterton, noted English critic, writer and philosopher.

2022 marks the 120th Anniversary of the founding of Perth College and, given that the School has now seen generations of girls benefit from its enviable holistic approach to education, this quotation has particular relevance for the Perth College family. It forces us to reflect on what was important to the founding Sisters, what is preserved from their extraordinary vision and what we must do to ensure that the key elements of their unique approach to education are sustained albeit that we must continuously evolve to meet an ever changing societal environment. With this heritage in mind and the need to sustain educational excellence for the long term, the Perth College Foundation was launched in 2012 with the aim of building a culture of giving amongst the broad School community. In particular, it was recognised that fees and government grants alone would not allow the necessary ongoing development of the School and an alternative source of funds needed to be grown. Given this imperative and the fact that our Foundation, unlike those of many other private schools, is a very young entity, the board has been very focused on building long term security. This has meant that we have been keen to build a healthy capital base and the goal the board has set itself is to reach a critical mass such that the Foundation will have assets of $30 million under management by 2028. When that goal is reached, it will obviously provide the capital base from which earnings will enable significant, predictable and ongoing support for the School – certainly a goal worth striving for!

Importantly whilst the Foundation has kept its sights firmly on long term sustainability for the School with assets of $20.5 million at the end of financial year 2021, it has not done so to the exclusion of short-term support. In the time since inception the Foundation has grown a significant Scholarship Program, raised over $570,000 for the Excelsior House fit-out, supported property upgrades and student sponsorships and funded Support staff; at the end of 2021 the funds directed to the School under these initiatives totalled nearly $2 million which is a significant proportion of total funds raised in this timeframe. Since its launch the Foundation has benefitted from the extraordinary generosity of the Perth College community as it has done in the past; indeed our very existence on the Mount Lawley campus was possible due to benefactors William Loton and Septimus Rowe and more recently supporters such as Jean Rogerson after whom the Science Building is named. However, ongoing success and future growth of the Foundation will depend on the combined and ongoing support of current students, alumni and their families who truly appreciate the values which underpinned their education. The Foundation will therefore continue to work on two fronts; building long term financial security and supporting the School by growing the Scholarship base as well as meeting specific priorities identified by the School from time to time. In doing so and particularly as we honour the School’s heritage in its 120th Anniversary year, the Foundation is driven by the enduring aim that Perth College retains its reputation for excellence in education.

Prepared by Karen Field, Chair of Foundation for the benefit of new families joining the Perth College community each year who may be unfamiliar with the role of the Foundation and its relationship with the School.

Reflections from the Principal In 2022 we are celebrating our School’s 120th anniversary and the significant progress we have made in aligning the Perth College Structure with our Vision. We are firmly focused on ensuring that our contemporary, ground breaking programs deliver on the Vision of the Sisters of the Church to prepare our students for a challenging and fulfilling future. We are excited about the positive impact on our students of our flagship initiatives, including Side by Side (our redesigned Service Learning program), Sports Development and Performance Program and sparc. These programs deliver rich learning, selfleadership, health, wellbeing and collaborative experiences to equip our students with invaluable critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. The generous support of our community, particularly as we adjusted, changed and postponed activities and campus contact to stay COVIDSafe, has been deeply appreciated. In 2021 Perth College was ranked seventh of WA secondary schools, achieving a median ATAR of 91. Our Class of 2021 achieved a 99.26 per cent WACE graduation, a top ATAR score of 99.95 and 58 students completed a VET Certificate II or higher. Significantly, our students completed 3418 hours of community service and gained 41 Duke of Edinburgh International Awards. Other School achievements in 2021 and into 2022 included expanding our Boarding House capacity to 111, developing our now oversubscribed PC Vacation Care program and successfully rehousing our Year 4 to 6 Students in the Beaufort Street wing. What is Side by Side? In 2021, we decided to reassess our Service Learning programs to ensure we could measure impact, add meaning and learn. Our new program, Side by Side, has been designed to ensure that Perth College students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12, become part of a mutually beneficial partnership exploring and addressing the challenges of our complex world.

Perth College Foundation Inc. 2021 Annual Report

Side by Side incorporates community collaboration, practical experiences and two-way learning. In 2022 our Year 8 students are working with AnglicareWA to explore advocacy. Each of the three groups is assigned one Anglicare priority advocacy area and will produce a video for Anglicare that either advocates on their topic or informs others about how to advocate. We are grateful for your thoughtful expressions of encouragement and your financial support. In 2022, we are celebrating the story of our School, its Founders and the stories of our students past and present. We are consolidating our Vision, growing enrolments and preparing our School for re-registration in 2022–23. We are futureproofing our School by moving ahead with our Junior School construction project, building up all our flagship programs, which also include InsideOut, STEaM and School Improvement, and developing and caring for our staff. Generosity of spirit is highly valued by Perth College students, staff and families. Our success depends on the support of our community, which we welcome through the Perth College Foundation or through the School. Sincerest thanks from all the staff at Perth College for your continued support.

Helen Aguiar PRINCIPAL OF PERTH COLLEGE

Message from the Chair The essence of this year’s message is to extend sincere gratitude to the ever-generous Perth College community for making 2021 another successful year for the Foundation in spite of all the uncertainties which the COVID-19 pandemic seems to have visited upon us all. Since 2022 marks 120 years since the founding of Perth College we had hoped to celebrate this milestone year with our wonderful donor community by staging a number of functions throughout the year. It is therefore very disappointing that, once again, COVID-19 restrictions have foiled our plans. In particular we were looking forward to sharing with everyone “in person” the news that 2021 had seen the Foundation reach a net asset position of just over $20.5 million. This has been especially significant for the Board as we had set ourselves a target of raising $30 million by 2028; this was always a very ambitious target and the fact that the generosity of the Perth College community has enabled us to now be two thirds the way along the journey, is enormous encouragement that the goal is now within reach! As I have reinforced in past communications, this Foundation is a young entity compared with many of our counterparts. We are particularly conscious that the Foundation was launched in 2012 by the then School Council which recognised that strategies needed to be urgently put in place to grow an alternative source of funds for the long-term sustainability of the School. It is for this reason that the Board of the Foundation has remained resolute in maintaining focus on growing the capital base so that, in time, the return on investments in our three Funds will result in reliable, sizeable and ongoing income streams for the benefit of the School. Indeed, the impact of growing returns on funds invested is illustrated in the Finance section of this Report and reinforces the significance of our long-term strategy. However, this necessary long-term focus has not been at the expense of short-term needs of the School which has benefitted by contributions of nearly $2 million since inception, inclusive of an enviable and growing Scholarship Program.

After the 2020 State COVID-19 lockdown it was heartening to be able to reconnect with our community at a variety of functions throughout 2021 culminating in a fun filled and very well attended end-of-year function which confirmed the growing interest in the work of the Foundation. This occasion also served as the formal farewell of our long serving Foundation and Alumni Co-ordinator, Natalie Swannell who will be sadly missed by the whole community with whom she had developed a special relationship over the years. During 2021 we were also delighted to welcome Andrew Harrison as an Independent Director on our Board as he brings a wealth of commercial experience. Andrew is invested in the success of the Foundation and the School as he is married to an Old Girl and has two daughters attending Perth College. My most important expressions of gratitude however are extended to the many generous Donors amongst the broad Perth College family on whom the success of this Foundation depends. The Board is energised by the indicated alignment of our Donors with the strategies in place to grow our capital base so that we can meet the imperative of securing long term financial security for the School. This will in turn ensure that the School will remain positioned to deliver to future generations of girls a first-class education and accompanying sense of leadership and community responsibility which has always been the central element of the Perth College culture. Sincere thanks to you all.

Finance The Foundation is pleased to report that it has experienced a successful year with its net assets increasing by $1.9 million from 2020 to $20.5 million at the end of the 2021 Financial Year. This is an important milestone for the Foundation as it is now positioned two thirds the way along its path to reach the target of $30 million by 2028. This was the highly ambitious target set by the Board in 2017 and at times seemed a little daunting; however, achievement of this position by the 120th Anniversary of the School’s founding is hugely encouraging and the Foundation remains committed to its guiding principle to build long-term financial security for Perth College. Stewardship of funds donated to the Foundation is a key responsibility of the Board. In order to do this in a highly professional manner the Board established an Investment Committee which operates in accordance with its Charter and the investment parameters established by the Board through its Investment Policy Statement. The Investment Committee continues to work closely with the appointed Investment Manager JB Were and, consistent with the requirement to continuously monitor and adapt to a changing investment environment, a comprehensive review of policy parameters was undertaken in 2021 to appropriately position the Foundation for the years ahead.

As has been our approach since inception, the Foundation continues to respond to shorter term priorities, most notably growing the Scholarship base, whilst remaining committed to growing the capital base such that since inception, the School has received contributions from the Foundation totally nearly $2 million which is a significant proportion of total funds raised over that timeframe. This is in addition to the inclusion in the Foundation’s portfolio of direct real estate investments which serve the School now and into the future. In keeping with the Foundation’s culture of transparency and responsibility to Donors, the following charts illustrate the growth of each of the Foundation funds from 2012 to the present. Given our focus on building the Foundation’s capital base, it is worth noting that as the capital grows, the impact of dividends and realised and unrealised capital gains represent increasing significance for overall returns for the Foundation (Reference Pie Chart of 2021 Income) and this is a consistent expectation of our longer term strategy. However, the Board is only too well aware of the challenges of investment markets, both international and domestic, and donations will continue to play a central role in ensuring that the Foundation is able to meet its long-term target. This will be particularly relevant as we face what will undoubtedly be a difficult investment environment in the next few years as the global economy is impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and rising inflation is tackled domestically. We therefore remain reliant on the continuing generosity of the extended School community to meet our commitment to secure long-term financial security for Perth College.

Impact Living Generously – Our Scholarship Program

for the funding of bursaries for Indigenous students through the Ngala Yakiny Moorditz (We Stand Strong) Bursary. Each of these are funded for enrolments in 2022 and 2023.

It has always been central to the values of Perth College that we should live generously and contribute to our community with integrity, respect and compassion. The Foundation’s Scholarship Program is a critical element which supports these values and it is always a delight to be able to report the expansion of our program year on year with the Foundation funding 19 Scholarships in 2021. The number of scholarships awarded by the Foundation is obviously dependent on the willingness of our community to donate specifically to our Scholarship Fund and the graphs in the Finance section of this Report demonstrate the continuing interest by our community in supporting our Scholarship Program which is then able to be augmented by positive investment performance.

2021 was a special year for the funding of boarding scholarships. The Foundation was also approached by long time supporters who chose to donate anonymously a significant sum to assist rural based families as they are only too well aware of the additional cost impost on country families who are required to send their children away to access quality education. The first recipient enrolled under the auspices of this bursary commenced in 2022 and the funding shall provide for scholarships over a number of years.

During the year the Foundation joined forces with the Old Girls’ Association to establish the OGA Heritage Scholarship which is open to the daughters or granddaughters of Old Girls. Additionally, the Foundation has been fortunate in receiving support from long term donors, Joan and George Lefroy,

10

Perth College Foundation Inc. 2021 Annual Report

As a matter of good governance the Foundation also undertook a review of its funding scholarship model during 2021 and we are pleased to be able to report the enhancement of the program by the establishment of a new Anne Cranston Perpetual Rural Student Scholarship and the conversion of the Wulili Scholarship into the Foundation’s “signature” Indigenous Student Scholarship with Perpetual status. We are therefore delighted to be able to profile each of the generous donors who have endowed these scholarships which will benefit students far into the future.

The Wulili Indigenous Student Perpetual Scholarship

Anne Cranston or ‘Crano’ as she was so fondly known by her closest friends hailed from Kalgoorlie, attended Perth College as a Boarder from 1963 to 1967 and always considered her school days some of the happiest times of her life. Anne made a significant donation to the Perth College Foundation some years before her death. Her generosity has been recognised by naming the upper level of Perth College’s Excelsior House ‘The Cranston Gallery’ and the Foundation has also established The Anne Cranston Perpetual Rural Student Scholarship as access to quality education for rural based girls was always of concern to Anne.

The Perth College community may recall that the Wulili Scholarship was established in 2018 by the Ethell family as a legacy of Jenny Ethell’s time as Principal of the School and a desire to make a difference. In particular Jenny indicated that she would like the scholarship to provide Indigenous girls with the benefit of a Perth College education and to become inspirational role models for others.

This Scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2023 to a student who is entering the School in Years 7 to 11 as a Boarder.

A gift that goes on giving. The Anne Cranston Perpetual Rural Student Scholarship celebrates the legacy of a Perth College girl who became a remarkable woman.

2022 Scholarship Award Giving

In demonstrating its commitment to the continuing education of Indigenous girls at Perth College, the Board took the decision during 2021 to convert the Wulili Scholarship to perpetual status and it will become our ongoing signature Indigenous Student Scholarship. Importantly this has been made possible by augmenting the Wulili Scholarship corpus with a significant donation made some time ago by a wonderful supporter who has recently expressed a desire that the funds be allocated to this perpetual scholarship. In contacting the Ethell family to advise of the Foundation’s decision, Jenny commented: “It was humbling and exciting to hear from the Chair of Perth College Foundation, Mrs Karen Field that the Wulili Scholarship had attracted such strong additional support from the PC community to become a perpetual scholarship and will enable future generations of young indigenous women to benefit from a PC education. It is a dream come true!”

Recipients of 2022 scholarships gathered with their families at Myalla House in mid-October 2021 to share the considerable achievement of being awarded a much sought-after scholarship to attend Perth College. It was a very happy occasion with some families travelling thousands of kilometres to celebrate with their daughters. Jenny and Dougall Ethell

SOMY (CHISOMEMBI) EZE

... and in a student’s own words Amongst those awarded a scholarship in 2020 for enrolment in 2021 is Somy (Chisomembi) Eze. Somy is from Carnarvon and started as a PC boarder in 2021 as a Lefroy Scholarship recipient. Somy has agreed to share her uplifting story and confirms for all of us the significant and lasting impact that a Perth College Foundation Scholarship has for girls like Somy and their families. The Perth College Foundation Scholarship has significantly impacted my schooling life. In 2020, I received the Joan and George Lefroy Foundation Scholarship for 2021–2023. Before I came to Perth College (PC), I lived in Carnarvon and attended the local school. The school was okay, and the teachers were dedicated. However, by the time I got to Year 8, it was quite apparent to me and my parents that I needed a more academically challenging environment and quality education to achieve my future goals. I desired to experience diverse sports activities, clubs, leadership programs, subject variety, strong community, opportunities for lifelong friendship, life-skills etc as part of my education. The only problem was that my parents were not financially able to support this dream. Thankfully, I applied for a scholarship and was granted one in Year 10.

12

Perth College Foundation Inc. 2021 Annual Report

After my arrival in 2021 commencing Year 10, it was very difficult for me. The gap between my former school and PC was like day and night! I was overwhelmed with all the resources the school had to offer. I am grateful for the support from my teachers and the boarding community and now I have become more independent, more studious, and more involved in my community. Various mentoring and leadership programs at the school such as sparc and Burn Bright have encouraged me to try new things and experiment with the different resources, both in the Boarding House and the School. I did unfamiliar courses such as Design, Textile, Video Bling and gained some invaluable skills. My teachers are approachable and highly experienced. I am getting on top of my academics. Every day, I genuinely feel that I am becoming more skilful and smarter due to participating in school activities, doing community service, and trying to balance my study life. Although it has been challenging in this high achieving school, I have enjoyed immense support from the school community. I am confident that my future goals are achievable because I am here at PC, and I am determined to persevere in achieving great results with this new life that I have. I am so grateful to have received this scholarship as it has changed my life forever and I thank God and the Perth College Foundation for providing me with this opportunity.

Foundation Activities After the requirement for the Foundation to cancel all social activities through 2020 due to the lengthy COVID-19 lockdown, it was a great pleasure to be able to reconnect “in person” with our community by way of a series of social activities throughout 2021.

The Hawkesbury Club Garden Party The Hawkesbury Club was established soon after the launch of the Perth College Foundation in 2012 as a vehicle for the School’s past parents, past staff, former Council members and former Foundation Board directors to maintain their connection to Perth College by attendance at an annual event hosted by the Chair of the Foundation. The 2021 Hawkesbury Club garden party was held on the PC front lawn under the jacaranda trees on a very hot March Sunday. Notwithstanding the heat, we had a good turnout of loyal community members and it was wonderful to see many familiar faces. Attendees were entertained by fabulous musical duo including PC Old Girl, Emily Gelineau former PC Music Scholarship recipient. An update on the Foundation’s progress in relation to fundraising goals was provided by Foundation Chair, Mrs Karen Field and Principal, Ms Helen Aguiar gave a brief update on the School’s achievements over the previous year.

Annual Scholarship Donor Breakfast Our annual Scholarship Donor Breakfast was held at the Mount Lawley Golf Club in August, attracting the usual enthusiastic supporters keen to hear from past and current recipients who provided insights into the importance of the scholarships to both them and their families. This year we were fortunate in being able to host Wendy Scott-Hamilton, Director of Philanthropic Services at JB Were as our guest speaker. Wendy provided interesting insights into the state of philanthropy in Australia, especially in terms of the impact of COVID-19 and its potential longer-term effects on the independent schools sector.

KALICIA MANNERS, EMMA WIEBRECHT, WENDY SCOTT-HAMILTON AND NADIA SHAUN (2019)

In her short speech, Chair Karen Field thanked the Perth College community for their extraordinary loyalty and support for the work of the Foundation as it focuses on attainment of its goal to raise a critical mass of $30 million by 2028. In particular, Karen acknowledged that this is an ambitious target for a school such as Perth College but it is great encouragement to recognise that in eight/nine years we have managed to be two thirds of the way along the timeline with $20.5 million in assets raised so far; significantly during this time the Foundation had also supported the School to the tune of more than $2 million demonstrating its commitment to tackling sustainability on both long and short term fronts. The end-of-year party also served as our farewell to our long serving Foundation and Alumni Co-ordinator, Natalie Swannell. It is a great loss but Natalie has provided wonderful service to the Foundation and the School over ten years and we understand her decision to now focus on her family and their newly established business.

Young Old Girls Advisory (YOGA) As part of our cultivation strategy amongst younger old girls (18-30 years old), the Foundation supported a number of initiatives in 2021 to build engagement with our younger cohort of Old Girls. In spite of COVID-19-related disruptions, the YOGA brought three events to life during the course of the year. Building on the success of our inaugural wellbeing YOGA-on-the-lawn event in 2019, we repeated this initiative in 2021; the turnout was excellent with young old girls now participating as the yoga instructors and photographers as well as raffle prize sponsors. Towards the end of the year, the Foundation also supported the YOGA valedictory initiative, which involves the YOGA group hand-crafting 100+ wellness packs for every Year 12 student before they sit their final exams. This initiative aims to reinforce to our newest Old Girl cohort the importance of our culture of giving.

Jacaranda Society “Recognising benefactors who have left a gift in their Will” A group of members gathered at the home of Foundation Chair, Karen Field in September. We welcomed our Principal, Ms Helen Aguiar who outlined plans in train for the School in the next few years. Up-to-date information in relation to the School’s long-term strategies is of significance to this group each of whom has advised their intention to leave a gift to the Foundation from their estate. Given this group’s personal commitment, strategies were canvassed as to how best to promote expanded membership of the Society in order to enhance future benefits which would accrue to Perth College through such individual generosity.
