Gwyn’s Review

It has been another busy couple of months in the winery (it’s never ending!) with preparing all of our 2017 South Australian Single Vineyard wines for bottling.

A sleeper vintage, the 2017s have come together with a surprising brightness of fruit, weight and power. The 21A, 8R and The Gravels are definitely ones to watch with the Strandlines being a personal favourite.

The winery team has also been busy with winery cleaning and preparation, counting down the days until vintage 2019 starts! The Hunter has had some nice rain over the last month which has helped with fruit set and keeping things green. Orange is looking absolutely spectacular with good growth and green canopies, and South Australia is on track with everyone’s fingers and toes crossed as we get through the last of the frost season.

On a personal note, Adam and I welcomed a happy and healthy baby boy on August 21st; Theodore Walls.

I hope you have a festive Christmas, and look forward to seeing you again in the New Year.

Limited Release

Orange Sparkling 'Silenus' 2015

This traditionally made bottle fermented limited release sparkling wine is a blend of cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

TASTING NOTES | Bottled and left on lees for 18 months before disgorging, this wine has great integration and texture with a fine and persistent bead. Complexing aromas of baked strawberry tart and white peach effortlessly fill the palate.

This is a well balanced wine with persistance and elegance.

VINTAGE | The 2015 vintage could best be described as a textbook vintage with weather on our sde. Grapes ripened nicely with no disease issues and quality was very good. Spring got off to an early warm start after decent winter rain. The warm spring pushed the vines through budburst, flowering and fruit set in a short period of time and so the tone for an early harvest was set.

No hot spells, no rush of sugar accumulation and no untimely rain to spoil the vintage.

'P.J.P' Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

VINTAGE | A warm dry season led to very early ripening and the whole 2016 harvest was finished three weeks earlier than previous vintages. All red varieties produced full bodied deep coloured wines with generally good balance. Exceptional parcels of Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz were produced on small rocky shallow soil blocks, and were selectively picked and fermented.

WINEMAKING | Our best block of Cabernet goes through individual row selection which results in four different picks and four different ferments. Once fermented dry, the individual lots were pressed off skins and put to French oak barriques (30% new).

We're thrilled to announce the release of our first ever 'Super Premium Wine'.

After 20 months in oak, the individual barrels were tasted and eleven outstanding barrels were selected and blended together to create this wine.

Orange Riesling

Orange Wine Show 2018 Gold Medal and 'Best Riesling' Trophy Winner now available to Members only TASTING NOTES | Situated at our high altitude vineyard in Orange, our Limited Release Riesling vines are 800m above sea level, ensuring a long cool ripening season. Our Riesling is a richer aromatic style with a perfumed nose of orange blossoms. The palate is luscious with juicy citrus characters and a long refined finish. Enjoy this wine now or cellar for further complexity.

VINTAGE | Our Orange vineyard experienced sustained drought conditions along with some unseasonably hot days around vintage. We were lucky to start the season with a full dam and our subsurface bore maintained good flow rates throughout the season.

Very good red wines were made particularly from Shiraz and Pinot Noir although Cabernet and Merlot were also picked in very good condition. RosĂŠ from Pinot Noir has excellent flavour and delicacy.

All four clones of Chardonnay plus the Riesling fruit produced good flavours and structures.

Eighteen years young Pepper Tree Trophy Winner still soars The Jimmy Watson is arguably still Australia’s most sought-after wine award. Pepper Tree were the proud winners in 2001 for our 2000 Coonawarra Cabernet. Luckily, we stored some in our Museum and chanced upon it during a recent clean up. As you can imagine we had to try it. To taste an 18 -year- old wine with so much freshness blew us away and we think you’ll be amazed too.

Stored under screwcap and cork to ensure longevity this wine has all the secondary characters of aged Cabernet and would be perfect with roast lamb or hard cheeses.
