Summer is here!

So far, it appears to be very wet...

Wet indeed for both our Hunter Valley and Orange vineyards. However, thanks to the stellar efforts of our vineyard manager, Belinda, the Hunter vineyard is looking spectacular!

The whites are starting to soften and the reds colouring up won’t be too far away. Orange is behind both the Hunter and Coonawarra and Wrattonbully, with flowering only just taking place in December.

The winery itself has been busy with vintage preparations, getting things bottled and tanks emptied to make room for the 2022 harvest. The chardonnays will be bottled in January and our new range of alternative varieties will be bottled in February. Some new and exciting treats to enjoy!

We hope you all have a lovely festive season, and we look forward to seeing you all at our events in 2022.

What a year we have had, we have missed seeing all of you and can’t wait to get back to some normality next year…

We have a full calendar of events for next year and kicking it off is our annual Sails on Lavender Bay luncheon on Saturday 5th of February. If you would like to attend this, please let us know ASAP as we have nearly sold out…

If you do miss out, don’t worry, we have an event every month next year so there will be something else wonderful you can attend. Please see the events calendar on the website so you can mark what you would like to go to in your diaries!

Dean Clarkson Assistant Cellar Door Manager

How was your time during lockdown, inside and outside of PTW? It was a struggle, but I kept busy by heading out to the vineyard and prepping everything before we head into the new vintage. Helped in the winery and did some extra bits that needed to be done. We tried to stay productive and kept the place in safe hands. Made sure I got some fishing in too!

What is your new role at PTW and how are you finding it?

My new role is the Assistant Cellar Door Manager of our Hunter Valley Cellar Door.

I am now in the Cellar Door full time after being in corporate and am really enjoying the added responsibility. Very glad that we can open our doors again and serve the lovely people with our wines. It’s what comes naturally to me and I really love it.

What are you currently drinking?

I would recommend our 2021 ‘Stone Mountain’ Riesling now. It just won Best Riesling at the NSW Wine Awards, and I’d encourage anyone to give it a go.

What are you looking forward to most in 2022?

I am looking forward to finally getting away and travelling a bit, some more fishing trips and hanging out with my mates again. Of course, I miss hosting our events and that aspect of what we do.

How was your time during lockdown, inside and outside of PTW? Providing some extra hands in the vineyard and winery during parts of lockdown was a great way to see other parts of the business. So much goes into it starting before budburst through to the winery processes, testing and into the bottle, not as simple as many may think. Having some extra time at home working on our renovations was a silver lining also.

What is your new role at PTW and how are you finding it?

My new role is the Direct Sales Coordinator looking after our members needs in the wine club through to looking after our corporate accounts. I am enjoying the transition however a lot of systems and processes to learn but enjoying another side of Pepper Tree Wines.

What are you currently drinking?

Wine I recommend at the moment is our Limited Release Pinot Rosé, best enjoyed on a sunny afternoon.

What are you looking forward to most in 2022?

Have been doing renovations on our house so looking forward to finishing them and having a kitchen in 2022. Also looking forward to getting back to some form of normality and life structure.

Tree family has welcomed a valuable and well-accomplished member to our Hunter Valley Cellar Door team, Kelly! Recently completing her W-SET Level 3 and currently studying a Diploma of Viticulture, Kelly not only brings knowledge but a bright and bubbly personality to our tasting experiences. An animal lover by heart, with three rescue dogs and three cats, Kelly strongly advocates our pet-friendly home in Pokolbin. She also loves scuba diving, travel and the ocean!

A bright vermilion sheen. Less earthy and firm than its Tallawanta sibling, this mid-weight style remains firmly in the luncheon ‘Hunter burgundy’ mould.

Lively, with the tangy acidity more synergistic with the jubey blue fruits, anise, root spice and clove of the profile.

Almost drinks like something from the Loire which, when good, drinks like something from Burgundy. This is sap, crunch and plenty of pop. A revitalising salve. Brilliant work!"

2018 ‘Coquun’!

TASTING NOTES | Our Coquun is the result of blending our best barrels of Shiraz from our vineyards in the Hunter Valley. A true Hunter Shiraz that represents what the region is capable of. Unashamedly medium bodied, offering vibrancy of fruit with complex spice. Balanced by fine tannins and subtle oak handling. A wine of great length and longevity.

WINEMAKING | Picked at optimal ripeness and de-stemmed to static fermenters, the fruit is cold soaked for 3 days. The tank is then inoculated with a specific yeast strain and ferments at 25 - 30 degrees Celsius. Once dry, the wine is pressed off skins and transferred to French oak puncheons for 18 months.

The wine is then blended and prepared for bottling.

Luncheon Review

It has felt like a lifetime since our 2021 Harvest events in June of this year! We would like to thank everyone who attended for a lovely time at Muse Restaurant, celebrating the end of Vintage 2021 with some of PTW’s finest new releases.

Unfortunately, our third Harvest Luncheon was cancelled, but we are gearing up for an event filled 2022, including our annual Harvest events again. Keep an eye out early next year!

TASTING NOTES | This 2021 Rosé is a refreshing crisp style made from grapes off our Wrattonbully vineyard.

Rich strawberry and cream with guava notes are abundant on the palate, which is textured and complex. A wine to be enjoyed chilled showcasing its vibrancy.

WINEMAKING | This block was harvested and pressed off skins after four days in the winery to integrate flavour and aromatics. The resulting juice was cold settled clear before being inoculated with an aromatic yeast strain to enhance aromatic profile of strawberries and cream, guava and wild raspberry notes.

Following ferment the wine spent two months on fine yeast lees to promote flavour integration and build mid palate texture before being stabilised and prepared for bottling

Single Vineyard 'Stone Mountain' Orange

TASTING NOTES | Our Orange vineyard is situated on the volcanics slopes of Mt Canobolas in the Orange region.

Grown at an altitude of 800 metres, our Riesling is a dry aromatic style with a perfumed nose of orange blossoms. The palate displays intense juicy citrus characters and a long refined finish. Enjoy this wine now or cellar for further complexity.

WINEMAKING | The fruit was hand picked at first light and then whole bunch pressed and settled bright before being inoculated for ferment. The resulting wine was then settled, lightly fined and prepared for bottling.
