Welcome Spring has well and truly sprung in the Hunter Valley. With the warmer weather, bright flowers and budburst just around the corner, it is an exciting and beautiful time to visit the Valley.

With that said, we are very excited to invite members, guests, friends and family to our annual Spring Food and Wine Celebration. This fabulous event will be held on the Pepper Tree grounds adjacent to the cellar door, Saturday October 15th. It’s a fun day out in the sun, with delicious food, live music and of course a selection of Pepper Wines to be enjoyed. See page 6 for more event details.

Spring is an extremely busy time of year for Pepper Tree with the winery team working tirelessly getting the 2015 red wines blended and ready for bottling. Keep an eye on the cellar door and members packs for the new release wines hot off the bottling line in the coming months.

The recent release of the 2017 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion awarded Pepper Tree a massive 14 wines 93 points and above. This is a huge credit to our hardworking winery team. See page 7 for our special James Halliday wine pack.

We look forward to visiting Melbourne and Sydney in the coming months as well as welcoming friendly faces back to the cellar door. Don’t forget to book in to the Member Tasting Lounge for that VIP tasting experience. We also have antipasto platters, and chocolate and wine pairings available for those daring to be a little different.

News from the Winery With all of our aromatic white wines in bottle, the winery team is now focussing on getting all of our 2015 South Australian reds blended and prepared for bottling. The overall quality is a standout with our particular favourites being the 2015 Block 21A Cabernet and the 2015 Gravels Shiraz.

We have tirelessly gone through and tasted every single barrel of 2015 red to allow us to select the very best barrels for each of our single vineyard wines. Once all of these wines are blended into tank we will then work on putting all of the 2016 South Australian red wines into the empty oak along with filling new barrels as well. After we get all of the reds into oak and the 2015 reds bottled, we will then make a start on the Chardonnay blending.

No rest for the wicked in this winery. Budburst has also well and truly started meaning the next season is just around the corner. This time of year is an important time for us where we are emptying the winery through getting all of the previous year’s wines into glass and putting all of the new wines to barrel. It is nice to see the days getting a little longer and we look forward to bringing in spring at the Spring Food and Wine Festival. We hope to see you there!

FUNCTION REVIEW 2016 Q4 Winemakers Table Luncheon Once again the winery team did a fantastic job transforming the working winery into a glitzy and glamorous dining room.

With Muse Owner and Chef, Troy Rhoades-Brown at the helm of the kitchen, guests were spoilt with a delectable five course menu, with each delicious course carefully complemented by a trio of Pepper Tree wines.

The special event witnessed the exclusive release of the 2004 Museum Release Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a tank sample of the 2016 Wrattonbully Chardonnay - the Chardonnay proving to be a wine to watch in the coming months.

2016 Limited Release Orange Rosé Tasting Notes The 2016 Rosé is a refreshing early drinking style made from Merlot grapes off our Orange vineyard. Rich strawberry and cream with guava notes are abundant on the palate. A wine to be enjoyed in its youth showcasing its vibrancy.

Vintage Notes Early rains for Vintage 2016 produced a good budburst and flowering but the weather was unseasonably hot from December onwards and led to one of the earliest vintages on record.

2014 ‘Tallavera’ Limited Release Hunter Valley Shiraz Our Single Vineyard ‘Tallavera’ Shiraz comes from its namesake vineyard in the Mount View area of the lower Hunter Valley.

Tasting Notes A complex mix of spice, earth and ripe mulberry fruit integrated well with savoury oak. The palate is medium bodied and fruit driven displaying sweet berry fruit balanced by fine tannins providing great texture and a classically elegant finish.

Vintage Notes The Hunter 2014 vintage started the season with good rains.

Budburst was in late August. Very good growing season with warm mild weather.

Awards • 96 Points - 2017 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion.

Vintage dubbed as one of the BEST!

2014

The Hunter 2014 vintage started the season with good rains and budburst in late August. It boasted a very good growing season with warm mild weather.

Whites ripened very early and harvest started on 8th January. Ripening proceeded smoothly with no rain and no excessive heat.

All whites were picked in good condition with very good flavour and balance.

Spring Special

Reds were even better. Shiraz from this year was the best for many years and has produced outstanding wines with great depth and balance.

Max & Chaser

Pet Hate: Max dislikes not knowing or being involved in what’s going on, whilst Chaser is not fan of March flies or buzzing insects.

They also love new soft toys and getting the squeaker out of them!

A day in the life of Max and Chaser: Slowly wake up around 7am when they hear the clink of breakfast bowls, then it’s a mad dash so they don’t miss out.

Max

Afterwards it’s outside for a bit of recreation - soak in the sun, play a game together, sleep in the garden, bit more of a play, nap in the sun.

They love to run and chase each other in the paddock at home then come inside for a good snooze and wake up just in time for dinner.

Chaser

A fun day for them also includes a trip in the car as visiting everywhere is an adventure for them. They love a visit to human grandma’s house and know exactly where this is as they always start making noises as soon as you turn into a particular street!

Other info about Max and Chaser: A father and son duo from Dog Rescue Newcastle. Max is a cattle dog, pug cross and Chaser is his son so a mix of this with a little Staffy or Labrador thrown in for good measure. Both love nothing more than being together, playing or sleeping.
