With Hunter and Orange fruit safely in the winery, #V17 is shaping up to be another awesome year. Jump across to page 3 for a full winery update from Head Winemaker, Gwyn Olsen.

April will see the Wine Club team visit Moda Restaurant in Brisbane for the sixth consecutive year, whilst May and June will host our ever-popular Harvest Luncheons at Circa 1876 and Canberra Members’ Dinner at The Boat House. Be sure to get in touch with the Wine Club ahead of time to secure tickets to one of our sell-out events to avoid disappointment.

WINE REVIEW 2016 Limited Release Wrattonbully Chardonnay TASTING NOTES The 2016 Wrattonbully Chardonnay is made from the iconic French ‘Bernard Clones’ which is renowned for producing fruit of great complexity and perfume at much lower ripeness levels.

Complex aromas of hazelnut, fig and spicy florals.

A full-bodied generous style of Chardonnay, whilst maintaining elegance and grace.

VINTAGE NOTES A warm dry season in Wrattonbully led to very early ripening and the whole 2016 harvest was in 3 weeks before that of 2014. Yields were the highest since 2004 but the warm weather ensured full ripeness of all varieties. All red varieties produced full-bodied deep coloured wines with generally good balance.

The winery is currently in the calm eye of the storm with Hunter Valley and Orange safely into the shed, and counting down the days until Wrattonbully starts to come in. Things in Wrattonbully and Coonawarra are looking exceptional this year, with mild warm temperatures creating a perfect even ripening.

The Chardonnay will start to arrive from Wrattonbully in mid-April, along with the Tempranillo and some Shiraz. The Cabernet is looking great on the vine with intense flavour developing and great acid lines.

2015 Limited Release Orange Shiraz TASTING NOTES Our 2015 Shiraz is a showcase of changing wine style and superb vintage conditions. Made using whole bunches, this wine is intensely fragrant and structured. Bright cassis and violets on the nose provide an evocative look into a complex palate of red and blue fruits, dark spice notes and a refined acid length.

All of the aromatic Hunter whites are safely in tank and will be prepared for bottling at the start of May, with all of the reds tucked away in oak for their 18 month maturation.

The Orange Chardonnay is some of the best we have ever seen into the winery and the Sauvignon Blanc is perfumed and aromatic. The Orange reds are tight and restrained, full of crunchy acidity and spicy fruit notes.

VINTAGE NOTES The 2015 vintage could best be described as a textbook vintage with weather on our side.

Grapes ripened nicely with no disease issues and quality was very good. Spring got off to an early warm start after decent winter rain. The warm spring pushed the vines through budburst, flowering and fruit set in a short period of time and so the tone for an early harvest was set. No hot spells, no rush of sugar accumulation and no untimely rain to spoil the vintage.

So far, we have eaten at least 30 bacon and egg rolls and have had over 300 pies for lunch. Best these reds arrive soon so we can start working all that off!
