Celebrating our energy “By organizing these Meetings, EDP clearly shows what a great company it is. I’m very proud to work here.” “It was by far the best Meeting ever. And I’ve been to them all, as I’ve worked for the company for 29 years.” “It was a great pleasure to see that there are really new people. These Meetings give us an idea of what a great company we are, where human capital is important. That’s a good way of motivating us”. These were some of the hundreds of messages sent by our co-workers after this year’s EDP Meetings in Porto and Lisbon, which were attended by more than 8,000 employees. This is undeniably one of the high points of the year for all of us. We share results, goals and strategies. We have a special opportunity to feel what it really means ‘to be EDP’. This is the stage on which the company’s real culture plays a central role. Once again, we showed our talent and excellence in bringing off an event of this size. Hundreds of people worked behind the scenes for months to make the event perfect. Employee satisfaction lived up to our expectations and gave us the added responsibility of beating the result next year. The idea of this year’s event was to give the company’s people a voice and a face and recall the community spirit that everyone experienced. And let’s not forget Madrid, Asturias and Bilbao, where these Meetings have also become a tradition. Creating and fostering a team spirit, motivating all the organization’s employees and getting them to communicate are important challenges that nurture everyone’s individual qualities and ensure the company’s sustained growth. This is how to create a winning company. This is how we celebrate our energy.

Eduardo CATROGA The Chairman of the General and Supervisory Board made his debut at Group Meetings and put over a message of trust to EDP’s employees. “My aim in my job is to be the chairman of all shareholders and all EDP Group employees,” he said.

“Although I have been on the board for more than six years, having the opportunity to chair a body like the GSB is probably one of the most exciting professional challenges that I’ve ever had.” “EDP is still the most efficient company in the sector in the Iberian Peninsula. It has a remarkable ability to grow more than the sector and at lower risk. All these aspects are important distinguishing features in facing future challenges.”

“I’m thrilled to be participating in the joint effort to assert EDP as a global energy company that is a leader in the creation of value, innovation and sustainability.”

“We know that 2012 will be a difficult year, probably the hardest one that EDP has had to face recently. We must regard this as an added challenge for everyone. Each member of this great team will be called upon to contribute and do their best so that we can achieve the strategic goals for this year, while staying on track for sustainable growth.” “This company has made important progress in recent years thanks to considerable strategic autonomy that has allowed it to choose its own destiny. This means that it has defined its own policies for growth and investment in new countries and new technology, especially renewable energy.”

1.

CUSTOMERS AND COMPETITIVENESS

“I’m convinced that the transition to the liberalized market will be another opportunity for EDP to show its worth and win in an open war. It is a challenge for us all: winning over customers or getting them back. This involves a price, a product and quality. We have to be able to make the most of our experiences in Spain and use marketing from other sectors to gain market share.”

“We have already witnessed the total opening of the industrial market. The competition there is full on. It is so full on that EDP no longer has even 50% of the market share in the sector. But it is essentially a price-driven market and companies have auctions and the winner is the lowest bidder.”

NUNO ALVES 12 edpon meetings

“NOW A SECOND WAVE IS COMING, WHEN THE RESIDENTIAL SEGMENT IS TOTALLY LIBERALIZED. THAT’S WHEN COMPETITION IS REALLY GOING TO START. COMPETITION WILL BRING NEW PRODUCTS AND SERVICES. COMPETITION CREATES INNOVATION AND WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO ARE READY TO COMPETE AND WIN THAT MARKET.”

“IT IS GOING TO BE ESSENTIAL IN THE RESIDENTIAL MARKET TO HAVE A DUAL OFFER. WE HAVE TO BE VERY PROACTIVE. THE COMPETITORS THAT WILL BE COMING IN ALREADY HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA. WE OURSELVES HAVE THIS EXPERIENCE IN SPAIN, WHICH IS ONE OF THE PLACES WHERE WE

“The recent EDP/ Continente campaign is very innovative. It highlights EDP and shows that we are staying ahead of the competition. This interaction with the customer will soon be part of our everyday work.”

CAN LEARN. DEVELOPING THIS GROWING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CUSTOMER IS OBVIOUSLY A VERY INTERESTING CHALLENGE.”

“In fact, in B2B, there has been ongoing, pretty aggressive liberalization, to such an extent that today EDP has an energy share of just under 40%. So here we already have a competitive market in which Spanish and foreign operators are competing directly with us. This is where we have to stand out in ways other than price, though price is obviously still important.”

MIGUEL STILLWEL D’ANDRADE meetings edpon 13

2.

INNOVATION IN THE EDP GROUP

“THE NEW MARKET CONDITIONS, WITH INCREASES IN PRICES OF FOSSIL FUELS AND FURTHER RISES EXPECTED, HAVE CREATED THE NEED FOR MORE AND MORE RENEWABLES. PEOPLE ARE ALSO INCREASINGLY CONCERNED ABOUT ENERGY EFFICIENCY. ALL THIS HAS TRIGGERED THE TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION THAT WE ARE EXPERIENCING TODAY.”

“What comes into our minds first when we think of innovation? Major

“Innovation is not just

technology. More and

more to do with attitude and attitude has to be something permanent.”

MANSO NETO 14 edpon meetings

“Innovation is more and more part of EDP’s DNA. It is not just a matter of technology; it is a state of mind, a cultural question”.

“WINDFLOAT IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF TECHNOLOGY FROM SEVERAL PORTUGUESE AND INTERNATIONAL COMPANIES WORKING ON AN INNOVATIVE PROJECT AT GLOBAL LEVEL. THE OPERATION UNDER WAY OFF THE PORTUGUESE COAST IS A SOURCE OF PRIDE NOT ONLY FOR EDP, BUT ALSO FOR THE COUNTRY ITSELF, BECAUSE IT IS A GREAT TECHNOLOGICAL LEAP.”

“Where intelligent networks are concerned, I would say that InovGrid, which has its pilot scheme in Évora, is the apple of many organizations’ eye. It was the benchmark project selected from around 250 intelligent network projects in Europe. The European Commission chose it as the key project for all the other electricity companies operating in Europe.”

CHALLENGES AND INTERNAL MOBILITY

“WHEN I JOINED EDP MANY YEARS AGO, GETTING A JOB AT EDP WAS LIKE BEING CHOSEN TO PLAY FOR THE BENFICA SOCCER TEAM, BECAUSE WE FELT THAT WE GOING TO BE PART OF A GROUP OF FINE, DISTINGUISHED, SPECIALIZED PEOPLE.”

“Mobility is an opportunity that is offered, but also has to be sought”.

“The Group has diversified its activities and geographical presence. This means that our people have to embrace new activities and probably travel to different workplaces.”

“EDP has structured programs. We are reviewing our international work regulations and establishing real Career Paths. This means knowing the existing development possibilities for each job.”

“EDP IS BEGINNING A GENERATIONAL CHANGE PHASE. BABY BOOMERS LIKE ME ARE ON THEIR WAY OUT AND A NEW GENERATION IS BEGINNING TO EMERGE.”

PITA DE ABREU “I tend to say that human capital is a company’s main asset. But it’s not enough to say it; we have to believe in it. And we really do believe!.”

THE PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINA THREE GORGES “There are several projects under way with China Three Gorges. The Chinese banks are going to open up a two-billion line of credit for EDP. In financial terms, CTG is also going to acquire minority positions in EDP’s wind farms. Our Group has had a small presence in Macao for many years now, thanks to our history. This could be the starting point for livening up the Asian market for EDP, with major support from CTG. The two companies can learn a lot from each other. There are also five possible joint investments around the world. They all have something in common – renewable energy.”

MEXIA

Ask any employee what the high point of the Meeting was and the answer will be immediately be the speech by António Mexia (or the Mourinho of energy, as Herman José called him). Every year the Chairman of the Executive Board of Directors proves that he is a born communicator and likes to share the company’s successes with the whole team. Here’s a summary of this year’s strong points.

meetings edpon 19

A UNIQUE POSITION “We live in a country that often doesn’t handle success well. It is often unable to deal with people who manage to transform the past and create a better future and more opportunities. But our EDP is doing well in Portugal and abroad. Our attitude to the difficulties is going well. Plus the fact that we have certainly managed to overcome these difficulties in a unique way. People sometimes don’t like this. But that’s no reason for us to change our history.”

HOW EDP WAS BORN “EDP is the perfect example of a company that has always been able to adapt to change and find strength by combining its different components. EDP was born from 13 regional operators and since then we have become the largest Portuguese company. We were able to change, combine the skills and what people brought from each operator and always managed to do more and better.”

THE LARGEST HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT IN EUROPE “We are going to build 3,500 MW. This is what I call proper use of Portuguese resources. And we know in a year like this, when there’s a drought, how important it is, and not only because of electricity. The dams that we’re beginning now are responsible for more than 200 million euros in savings on imports. In other words, they mean fewer hours of work for the Portuguese to import energy from the Middle East or some other region. This is a fundamental issue. And we’ve been able to make these structures differently. We used two winners of Pritzker awards (like a Nobel Prize, but for architecture) - Siza Vieira for Foz Tua and Souto Moura for Baixo Sabor. We are the first company in the world to have machine rooms designed by award-winning architects. And they’re Portuguese.”

EDP DISTRIBUIÇÃO “We have 222,000 kilometers of grid, five times the circumference of the earth. Our average outage time is 75 minutes, 39% shorter than in 2010. Less than 10 years ago, the time was almost 400 minutes. Thanks to what? Meticulousness, culture and, above all, dedication to excellence, which I believe is an undeniable trait of all at EDP Distribuição.”

20 edpon meetings

SPAIN “HC Energía and Naturgas Energía are important drivers of growth in profits: up 20% in 2011. This an example of successful integration along the value chain, particularly because we have a customer market share that is double our generation market share in Spain.”

THE MOST EFFICIENT UTILITY COMPANY IN THE IBERIAN PENINSULA “All this is only possible because we work together to be the most efficient Iberian company. We have a ratio of 27% operating costs to gross margin. The figure in 2005 was 38%. Today’s 27% is the best figure of all companies in the Iberian market.”

BRAZIL “Our portfolio has maintained a key feature, its growth. But 2011 was a difficult year. What are we today? Practically 3,000 MW of installed capacity, 2.7 million customers, the fifth largest generator in Brazil and the fourth largest energy distributor. These figures help to remind us that we are a global company.”

EDP RENOVÁVEIS “Expansion into Europe began with HC Energía. Then came the purchase of Horizon and the 2008 IPO, the year’s largest stock exchange operation. Then we moved into Canada, Romania, Poland, and Italy, making us a true multinational in this area too. EDP Renováveis grew 11% in 2011 and has operating profits of more than 800 million euros.”

11,000,000 CUSTOMERS “Today we are able to work with more than 11 million customers. When all is said and done, we touch the lives of more than 40 million people.” meetings edpon 21

GLOBAL PLAYER “Today we are a global player. We began with 13 regional operators and ended up talking about Poland, Romania and the United States. We have changed a lot. And the results are clear.”

OUR PILLARS “EDP is a global reference in sustainability, these projects, the creation of value, sustainability and innovation.”

22 edpon meetings

THE COUNTRY’S DRIVING FORCE “We are one of this country’s driving forces. There can be no doubt. In terms of employment (4,323 jobs created) and in terms of investment (854 million euros invested in Portugal), representing 40% of our total investment. We can say that we are the driving force behind the Portuguese economy.”

ABLE TO DELIVER “We have been a pleasant surprise. Once again, we were better than the market expected. This shows that we have been able to deliver. Our more than 12,000 people have been able to deliver. This is the key to success. Why? Because the strategy that we established together in 2006, involving low risk, focused growth and efficiency (the three pillars) has worked and is particularly suited to difficult times, like those that we are going through today.”

meetings edpon 23

ACCESS TO FINANCE “2012 is probably going to be the company’s hardest year, for a number of reasons. The first is access to finance. The issue is that today we are a company in which 60% of profits come from outside Portugal. We issued about 200 million euros in retail bonds in 2011 and made a special effort in all new projects: project finance, bond issues and funding of credit on the international market. Today we depend more than 90% on international banks and not on Portuguese banks.”

REGULATION AND LEGISLATION “We have to make it very clear that, from the point of view of the energy sector, EDP is on the solution side. We are not willing to be one of the scapegoats. And why is this? Let me say again that electricity prices in Portugal are lower than the European average and lower than in Spain, particularly for industrial customers. They were also lower for domestic customers until VAT was raised. There is a tariff deficit but not because of renewables. It’s there because, in 2008, when fuel prices rose and the price of electricity went up almost 40% in countries like Britain, in Portugal it rose 4%. Between 4% and 40% there’s a deficit that’s going to have to be paid later.”

GROWTH IN NEW MARKETS “Where do we want to go? To some of the usual places and to other less usual ones. From Brazil we are considering venturing into the rest of Latin America, especially Colombia and Peru. There’s Eastern Europe and also Angola and Mozambique, countries where we have made a crucial contribution to the legal and regulatory framework. This is why we need new shareholders.”

SOLID SHAREHOLDER BASE “There has been essential reinforcement of our shareholder base in recent years. In addition to Portuguese, Spanish, Algerian and Abu Dhabi shareholders, we also have a lot of British ones. This shows our ability to enlarge and solidify our shareholder structure. But this process continues. Our new partner China Three Gorges is playing a vital role because it gives us new financial muscle so that we can make new investments together in new countries.”

24 edpon meetings

THE EDP FAMILY “Together we are ready to do better. The secret lies in the way we trust one another. We are part of an EDP family. The fact that every year has been a record profit year is because people are more and more involved. This willingness to step up to the plate has to do with the fact that we are doing what we enjoy and that it changes Portugal. It changes lives; it changes our lives and creates opportunities. We face challenges without fear: with courage.”

SATISFACTION RATE “This year, the satisfaction rate reached an all-time high. More than scoring 84%, which is an unparalleled figure at EDP and indeed any large Portuguese company, what I would like to underscore is that 92.5% of people answered the questionnaire. This is a fundamental aspect that means that we are involved and committed.”

WORKING FOR EDP GIVES LIFE “The average life expectancy in Portugal is 84. Do you know the average life expectancy of people who worked for EDP? It’s 86, which means that EDP is good for your health. We really do like what we do at EDP. I’ve been here for six years and I love what I do, which means that my life expectancy has increased too.”

ARTISTE “It’s a great pleasure to be here. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a big party. It’s no coincidence that I was invited, because my career was born at the same time as EDP, in 1976. Of course there are sad things. As time has gone by EDP has just gotten better and better, while there are parts of me that don’t work so well anymore.” - HERMAN JOSÉ -

“Good evening! Trust a Brazilian to arrive at coffee time, right? It’s a great pleasure to sing with Mariza and it’s very exciting to see how a diva can be so generous.” - ROBERTA SÁ -

“I don’t know if you know, but I haven’t been on stage for a very long time. So let’s see if I can bring you a little of what I’ve been keeping in my heart for almost a year. And that is nostalgia, emotion, affection, and a real desire to share music. Thank you very much for the invitation. It’s a great pleasure to be with you today.” - MARIZA -

WE’RE CONNECTED BY THE SAME ENERGY The Meetings started even before stepping into the rooms of Europarque and the Atlantic Pavilion. Every employee placed an LED light bulb on a panel, which, after being lit up, showed the energy which connects us and which will connect us even more after launching the new intranet. It will be called Move On. This will be an important milestone since it will allow all of EDP’s employees to communicate in a truly global manner. Whether in Portugal, Spain, the US or Brazil, it will be possible to access the same intranet and find all the information on a single site. But there will be even more advantages: every employee will have more power to decide what information he or she wants to view and send. The new intranet will be more collaborative and customizable. More connected with one and all.

EDP TALENT EXHIBITION At this year’s meeting, everyone could see and hear the gifts of the finalists of the EDP Talents initiative at the show set up at the entrance to the pavilions. From painting and sculpture to photography and film, singing and instrumental music, the aim of the EDP Talent Exhibition was to showcase the different artistic callings of EDP’s employees. Over twenty dedicated, passionate and talented professionals made it to the final stage of this initiative and showed their other side to all of EDP.

CARTOON PRESENTATION One of the surprises this meeting had in store was the cartoon-style illustration of the chairman of the Executive Board of Directors, António Mexia. Daniel Nobre, from the LiveSketching company, was on stage, in real time, translating the essence of the message into drawings. The presentation became even more lively on the impressive screens filling the Lisbon and Porto pavilions. At the end, António Mexia was treated to a parting gift. An exclusive portrait of himself as a souvenir...

REPRESENTATIVE OF CHINA THREE GORGES The representative of China Three Gorges, Shengliang Wu was in Lisbon on the last day of the Meetings. He was at the Atlantic Pavilion to feel for himself the energy that connects us. The head of the Chinese company, which has recently become the primary stockholder of the EDP Group was pleasantly surprised during the various stages of the Meeting. Including when Herman José improvised a lively version of the well-known fado song “Nem às paredes confesso” in Mandarin Chinese. During the Meeting, Shengliang Wu made a point of reading a message aloud to all the employees, and ultimately took home a little of our energy.

REPORTER

for a day

They arrived thinking this would be just another Meeting, but they were surprised with a challenge: being reporters for a day. It’s true, at EDP we like to challenge people... and we like it even more when they pass the test!

MARIA AZEVEDO, DRH

How did your ‘being reporter for a day’ experience go? It was a thrill, I don’t know what the grouping was, but I think I did well. Now we’ll see the final result. Do you think you have a hidden talent? I might, but I’d need a lot of training. It’s fun. But I think there are a lot of people who do this much better than me. (laughs)

RICARDO VELHOTE EDP GÁS

How was your experience being a reporter for a day? It was a once in a lifetime experience and one not to be repeated. It didn’t go badly, but it’s not something I am comfortable with. What do these meetings mean for you? They are an important way to bring everyone together and listen to the messages EDP wants to convey, the management, learn a little

62 edpon meetings

about what’s been happening over the last two years and what EDP’s future holds, even more so with the entry of a new stockholder. What does it mean to be EDP? It’s being part of a multinational company, the largest Portuguese company, extremely innovative, focused on sustainability, where we try to improve and deliver a great service to the Portuguese people.

What does your first Meeting mean to you? There were a lot of surprises, a lot of socialization and we also learned a bit about the business and challenges of EDP. There was an awards ceremony, with a lot of recognition, and a lot of music. I think this is a great way of socializing, we can all get together here to celebrate EDP. What does it mean to you to work in the EDP Group? I’m proud to work at EDP. I feel EDP is a reference company both nationally and internationally as well. It has been a huge challenge and I’ve enjoyed being a part of this team.

DIANA FERREIRA, EDP VALOR How was your experience being a reporter for a day? It was a lot of fun. I’ve participated in other EDP Group activities before but this was my first time as a reporter. And if other opportunities come up later, I’m ready to work with you. Are you thinking about changing fields? No (laughs), this is just a hobby, a part-time thing...

PEDRO MATOS EDP Distribuição

How was your experience being a reporter for a day? It was a very interesting and enriching experience which enabled me to take on a different role at EDP and live up to the challenge of having a camera pointed at me and a microphone in my hand, combining improvisation with creativity as well as reporter professionalism. What do these meetings represent for you? For me in particular, the meetings have been an

opportunity to learn a lot about the EDP world, especially since I only just arrived. I had a chance to meet new colleagues and find out about the work as well as hear the company’s management talk about the path taken by EDP and the challenges the company faces. What does it mean to be EDP? Being EDP means, among other things, knowing that I have a chance to contribute toward the business development of a solid, highly active Portuguese corporate group.

What activities has the EDP Group allowed you to take part in? It has allowed me to do voluntary work, which is an advantage at the Group. Actually, being part of the EDP Group has a lot of advantages. I love working for this company. What are expecting from this meeting? I hope it will be a really dynamic meeting where I’ll get to interact with other people. It’s also a great way of networking. I’m hoping to have fun as well. Can we count on you as a reporter for next year? Definitely!

making of THE NEW CAMPAIGN For the Energy of Tomorrow was a campaign which put the spotlight on future generations. Day in, day out all EDP employees work with them in mind. And who better than the employees’ children to represent this ambition? It was these real testimonies which in fact brought the campaign to life. Testimonies in which “our” children explain what their parents do at EDP in an amusing way very much their own. The children came from some of the countries in which EDP is currently present: Portugal, Spain, Brazil, the United States and France. For the Energy of Tomorrow

Samarah Arpini

clearly demonstrates what EDP is today: a globally positioned company with an innovative stance with, more and more, a human face. The children’s contributions were exemplary and demonstrated their pride in their parents. The new campaign was developed by the BAR agency, directed by Diamantino Filmes and produced by Caravan. Advertising space purchasing was handled by the MEC central buying office. It was shown, for the first time, to the employees at the EDP Meetings. Take a look at what went on behind the scenes...

BRAZIL “My delight started when I got home, talked to her and she wanted to film the sign-up video dressed in my uniform blouse. On the day of the shoot in São Paulo, she started off very shy, but after a short while she started to feel at ease. This made the shoot a fun and magical experience, completely different from anything else she had done. It was a lot of laughs. And for her, it wasn’t hard to talk about the feeling of belonging to the EDP family since

she has always identified and truly feels pride in my work. I must say that Samarah surprised me: she followed the script delightedly, joyfully and bright-eyed. Happy, very happy. Now she’s thrilled, she’s already seen the commercial countless times. It’s even motivating her at school. She’s broadened her dreams and what’s more, she’s aware of the fact that they can come true.” Cleópatra Alcântara Costa

“What I liked best was traveling by plane, I didn’t know São Paulo. I came with my mommy. I think the EDP commercial’s going to turn out really nice. It’s going to be beautiful!” SAMARAH ARPINI, 6-year-old, daughter of Cleópatra Alcântara Costa

SPAIN “I think Mateo was very spontaneous and communicative during the shoots. When we were in Lisbon, he acted completely naturally and behaved as if he had always known the production team. All with the innocence of a six-year-old kid, of course! For him, it was an adventure to travel by plane for the first time in his life, travel to another country, meet new people... It was a fantastic experience, the result is perfect, I have faith in the EDP institutional campaign. And now Mateo feels like a mini-star at his grade school! I’m very proud of him. He looks so angelic and cute... his younger sister, Jimena, says that next year she’s the one who’s going to do the next EDP TV campaign!” Isuka Navarro Pina, Mother of Mateo Navarro

PORTUGAL “This was a unique experience for Rita (Maria Braga) who experienced it to the fullest. The train ride to Lisbon, all the wardrobe and makeup prep-work, the attention and friendliness of the team taking care of her, the novelty and the professional setting of the photo session and the shooting and, last but not least, the surprise of the end result which has been viewed over and over with enthusiasm and pride by the whole family. It could not have been more enjoyable experience! As a mother (obviously a doting one), I can’t stop emphasizing the professional attitude and maturity my daughter showed. It was, without a doubt, an experience which we’ll remember at home for the rest of our lives!” Maria Inês Fernandes, mother of Maria Braga

“It was a great experience. It was the first time I made a commercial. I also liked being photographed. At the beginning I was relatively nervous, but I think it turned out good.” DUARTE MOTA PINTO, 7-years-old, son of Carlos Mota Pinto

“As a father, I was truly proud of the way Duarte took this challenge seriously. He behaved like a perfect ‘grown–up’, always very ready and in a good mood. Despite a little initial anxiety, the team guiding him during the shoots turned the morning into an unforgettable experience for Duarte. In addition to having a great time, he’s very happy to see himself just about everywhere. And he tells anyone who’ll listen that his dad is actually helping to create the most intelligent city in the world.”

spain

Three places, three cities, one common history: WE ARE EDP. This was the theme at all the Iberian Peninsula Meetings. In Spain, the chairman told the story of the the company. The injection of capital into HC Energía, the importance that renewable energies already had at the time, how growth proceeded from Neo to what is now EDP Renováveis and the strong growth of gas in the business portfolio, turning the EDP Group into the sector’s most integrated company in the

country. There was time to revisit the Group’s history as well as to celebrate the work in which EDP has been actively engaged on the path to the future. Antonio Maceda, a player in Spain’s national soccer team, Juan Manuel López Iturriaga, a basketball player and a flash mob professional in Madrid lent entertaining touches to these meetings in which socialization among colleagues was one of the strong points for sharing experiences and future projects.

The building designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, built in Avilez, formed as the stage for the EDP Group meetings in Asturias, which various employees of HC Energy and Naturgas Energia attended. In keeping with tradition, these Meetings were used to bring the teams together, take stock of the results and objectives, talk about the successes achieved and analyze what needs to be improved. This year’s edition was inaugurated by Manuel Menéndez, chairman of HC Energía. Next, António Mexia, chairman of the board of EDP, showed Group’s position in the current economy, now totally globalized, to all the employees and set the objectives for the future. Miguel Stilwell D’Andrade, deputy CEO of HC Energía, explained to the employees how these changes translate into the Spanish context, against the backdrop

78 edpon meetings

of the economic crisis and slowdown of renewable energies. The special guest at this edition was the former soccer player Antonio Maceda, a personality who achieved the highest level in his sport, in which he faced great challenges. Spain’s 12-1 victory over Malta, when the Spaniards needed a difference of 11 points to qualify for the Euro will remain forever etched in memory. The challenge was almost insurmountable, but thanks to team work and a planned strategy adapted to the circumstances, the team managed to achieve its goal. But this victory was to a large extent only possible because there were 11 leaders on the field all rowing in the same direction. Once again, it was clear that a company’s situation is not built based solely on numbers, but, rather, first and foremost on human beings. After all, the numbers never manage to obscure a company’s human capital.

With two months, the first of the plant’s three generators was already generating energy.

• Merit award for the team which was able to reclaim the Sinova plant in Soria Roberto Sagrado, Juan Jesús García, Manuel Baragaño, Jorge Fernández, José Luis Izquierdo, Reyes Sala, Sergio Mateo and Ángel Serrano. A storm which caused damage to the primary transformer could have put the plant out of commission for four months. The cooperation of the Cogeneration and Waste; and Distribution and Generation areas made it possible for the plant to start generating energy again in just two weeks, thus avoiding a serious environmental problem.

• Merit award for the team which managed the new Salas 400/132 kV, Romio 132 kV and El Musel 132 kV substations project | Álvaro Rodríguez; Manuel Rodríguez; Daniel González-Lamuño; Javier Busta; Jesús Fernández and Cristina Lobo Last year, the company had to deal with a large number of grid installation systems under the company’s Master Plan and Wind Power Plan in Asturias. All of the development phases were managed jointly by the Departments of Grids and Projects, with small, high quality, teams, deadlines being met, and in safety.

• Merit award | Carmen Echevarría For her efforts in the work related to the solidarity projects and obtaining “Family-Friendly Company” certification. In the Human Resources Department, Carmen works hard on developing these initiatives at HC Energía.

• Merit award to the Sitel team | Ignacio Blanco Rodríguez and Rubén López García This team implemented a system capable of remotely managing customer meters. They now provide better service to customers in real time and thus opened up a world of possibilities for future implementation of the intelligent grid by maximizing synergies, thanks to reuse of the technical advances developed in Portugal in the field of intelligent grids.

The Zalacaín complex in Pozuelo de Alarcón was the venue selected to receive the EDP Renováveis, HC Energía and Naturgas employees in the Spanish capital. The famous Spanish host and actress, Remédios Cervantes, kicked off the presentation at the meeting. After her welcoming speech, Miguel Stilwell D’Andrade was the first to take the floor, analyzing the company at which he was recently appointed Chief Executive Officer. This was followed by a presentation by his predecessor and current Chief Executive Officer of EDP Renováveis, João Manso Neto. Later on, after a pleasant coffee break on the terrace, the chairman of the Group, António Mexia spoke to the

employees, giving them an overview of the Group, backed by historical references, explanations about the current situation of the Group companies, objectives and strategies for the future. The surprise came when a supposed employee sitting among the audience interrupted António Mexia, asking him to summarize his presentation since she arrived late. This segued to the music and dance show in flash mob format which came as a surprise to all the employees present. Disbelieving at first, they quickly surrendered to the catchy rhythm of the actors and the session ended with a visible burst of energy and applause.
