Welcome to the summer 2025/2026 edition of Peninsula Kids magazine.

As I reflect on 2025 one word comes to mind: weird. It has been a weird year! During this year, my baby (the boy child) became a teenager…and also grew what seemed like two feet taller! I swear, last year he was barely up to my chin singing in perfect, high pitch to pop songs with bee-boppy tunes. Then overnight that little boy moved out and Barry White moved into my son’s room, and he brought with him a scooter, a record player, Tyler the Creator and Kendrick Lamar. Also a fan of Tyler the Creator is my daughter. It brought joy to my heart when my son chose her as his plus one at the concert after being gifted two tickets for his birthday. My husband and I spent the duration of the concert sitting in the car a block away from the venue waiting for them to emerge together. (IYKYK) In 2025 she finished her first year of VCE exams and also started learning to drive... both being total eye-openers for this mama, (and I think for her a wee bit, too).

The playing field has evened up. They have big voices, they use big words, and have stepped into big, (GIGANTIC) shoes. There are two adults and two teenagers in our house now. And my hubby and I are excited about the special human beings we created and look forward to spending time this summer getting to know more about the people they are becoming.
Summer here is the perfect time for connection for families of all ages. I invite you to explore, engage, and celebrate all that this remarkable region has to offer.
The festivals, markets, galleries, and eateries offer countless opportunities to bring us together.
On behalf of our awesome team, thank you for picking up this summer edition. May your days be filled with sunshine, laughter, and the magic of discovery—whether you’re wandering the footpaths of our coastal towns, enjoying a picnic at Point Nepean, or simply basking in the glow of a perfect evening by the bay.

Congratulations to our spring mag colouring competition winners! Alethea, Alfie, Guy, Lucia & Magizhan each won a family of five admission ticket to Ashcombe Maze & Gardens. www.ashcombemaze.com.au

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

With Australia’s upcoming social media ban for under-16s, children are concerned about losing contact with friends. While platforms are responsible for compliance, parents need to enforce rules, support their children, and encourage open communication for a smooth transition.
The quote “Your kids will become who you are, so be who you want them to be” is a challenge to notice how our reactions, beliefs, and ways of being shape not only our tweens, but the culture that exists within our families.
School holidays often mean a challenging juggle between work, life and keeping the kids entertained. It can be all too easy to lean on devices to offer a convenient distraction. At first this might do the trick, but relying on screens too much can quickly lead to conflicts and tech tantrums as the holidays progress.
For youngsters, long summer days are an idyllic part of childhood. But did you know that the way your little ones have fun can have a big impact on their development? Here’s how to encourage independent play and why it’s important.
We’ve all been there. It’s January 1st. You're feeling optimistic. You’re setting new year resolutions and decide, “This is the year I’ll get on top of our money!” So you set a strict budget. You swear off takeaway. You create a complicated spreadsheet. You commit to saving half your income. Then… life happens.

We are a family owned and run 62 place centre. Here at Cherry Lane, we believe in muddy, messy, bare foot play, where the children are encouraged to explore the natural environment.
We provide/have:
Nappies, wipes, nappy cream, sunscreen
Nutritious meals cooked daily on premises
Excursions and incursions
Regular outings
Music program
Vegetable gardens, fruit trees and chickens
Natural outdoor areas

AAUSTRALIA’S SOCIAL MEDIA BAN FOR UNDER16's EDGES CLOSER, CHILDREN ARE ALREADY WORRIED ABOUT LOSING TOUCH WITH THEIR FRIENDS. BUT WHILE THE ONUS IS ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS TO ACT, RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA SAY THE REAL BATTLE WILL BE AT HOME – WHERE PARENTS MUST ENFORCE THE RULES, MANAGE THEIR CHILDREN’S REACTIONS, AND HELP THEM ADJUST. THE KEY TO A SMOOTHER TRANSITION IS EDUCATION, REASSURANCE, AND OPEN, AGE-APPROPRIATE CONVERSATIONS.
The first step is understanding why social platforms matter to kids. Many children and teens use apps like Snapchat and TikTok to connect with their friends. They’ve grown up with this technology - it’s part of who they are - and they’re used to communicating through videos, emojis, photos and filters. When the ban kicks in, kids may feel like they’re facing a social penalty where they won’t be able to connect with their friends in the same way. The fear of losing touch with friends is real, so parents will need to invite questions and show understanding and empathy about what their kids will see as a loss.
Brainstorm alternative ways to stay connected. If they liked TikTok dances, an app like Just Dance could suit; if they want to chat, use closed group chats or messaging apps; and if they enjoy gaming, find multiplayer games where they can connect safely. Supporting kids through this is about empathy – and keeping the lines of communication open.
From December 10, major social media platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Reddit must take ‘reasonable steps’ to stop under-16s creating accounts. While the new legislation aims to protect kids from harmful content, its success

depends on what happens at home – through education and consistent guidance.
Parents should talk with their children about online safety – why it’s important to protect personal information like your full name, address and passwords; who it’s okay to connect with; and how to behave kindly and respectfully. They should also teach kids to think before they post anything – photos, comments or information –because once something’s online, you can’t take it back.
Young brains are especially vulnerable to social media because they crave peer feedback and attention. This makes them more likely to take risks or react quickly without thinking about the consequences. Encourage kids to ask, ‘Would I say this to someone’s face?’ or ‘Would I show this to my mum?’ before posting or commenting. If the answer is ‘no’, then it’s probably not appropriate.
With rising rates of online bullying, coercion and sextortion, researchers say it’s vital that parents take the ban seriously. The social media ban isn’t ‘safetyism’, or evidence of a ‘Nanny State’; it’s an essential move to protect kids from online predators and risks. Parents should educate themselves about the platforms and games their kids use so they can have informed conversations. Nonjudgemental, ongoing dialogue is essential.
As children tend to imitate adult behaviour, parents can also be powerful role models. Avoid excess screen time yourself and set up screen-free times for the whole family, like dinner and bedtime. This makes boundaries predictable and shows your kids what a healthy balance looks like. Connect with your kids. Show them how you can have fun together – whether it’s board games, movie nights, or taking advantage of daylight savings for a bike ride after dinner.
The convenience of screens and social media has caused havoc. Perhaps we all need to wind the clock back and remember what life was like before screens. It’s time we took control –for our sake, and for the safety and wellbeing of our kids.

Quick tips to know about guiding kids through the social media ban:
• Get informed about new plat forms and trends – Kids move quickly to new apps. Keep an eye on emerging platforms and talk about them before your child joins – explore the platforms, games and media kids are using and explore the benefits and risk of these.
• Educate kids about online safet y – Talk openly about the benefits and risks of the internet, what’s safe to share, how to protect personal information, and what to do if something online feels uncomfortable and even if they think they have done something wrong online. They need to know that you are always there to help them even if they have done something wrong.
• Have open and age -appropriate conversations – Talk about what they do and see online and how it makes them feel. Stay open and provide a safe place to share
• Understand and empathise – Acknowledge your child’s feelings of loss of freedom or control. Let them know you understand but explain that safety and their wellbeing comes first.
• Model healthy behaviour – Show balance in your own screen use and set family-wide screen-free times (like during dinner or before bed).
• Create consistent routines – Make boundaries predictable with regular habits, such as tech-free zones or times.
• Encourage alternatives – Support hobbies, sport, and offline fun to keep kids socially connected in healthier ways. Arrange family or peer connection like movie or game nights.

...all summer long!

By Amanda Stokes

EVERY PARENT KNOWS THE MOMENT: YOU’RE WATCHING YOUR CHILD MOVE THROUGH THE DAY, MAYBE WITH A LITTLE MORE ATTITUDE, A LITTLE LESS PATIENCE, OR IN THE THROES OF PUSHING BOUNDARIES, AND YOU SEE YOURSELF.
It’s humbling, sometimes confronting, and always a call to pause.
The quote “Your kids will become who you are, so be who you want them to be” is a challenge to notice how our reactions, beliefs, and ways of being shape not only our tweens, but the culture that exists within our families.
Parenting tweens today means navigating shrinking childhoods and expanding online worlds. Where once the transition between child and teen felt like a gentle ramp, now it’s more of a tightrope walk.
Social media, constant connectivity, and layers of school wellbeing programs bring both opportunities and pressure, but there’s still a disconnect between what our kids hear at school and what they see at home.
Our influence as parents is less about what we say and more about what we live. Tweens are mirrors of our truest selves, absorbing, reflecting, and amplifying the standards, values, and emotional habits that walk through our doors each day.
With social media soon to be banned for under-16s, we may be standing at the edge of something extraordinary.
For years, our kids have been growing up in a digital landscape that shaped how they see themselves and others, one that rewards comparison, performance, and instant reaction. This change offers a rare opportunity: a chance for this generation to rediscover life beyond the scroll and the group chat.
What might our homes feel like if conversation replaced content?
If presence replaced performance?
If curiosity, creativity, and connection took centre stage again?
For all the fear and uncertainty surrounding the digital age, this shift could be the reset many families have longed for, a chance to slow down, look up, and re-learn how to connect face-to-face.

The other day, someone sent me a post about “the burnout no one talks about”, advocacy trauma.
It resonated deeply. As a parent of a neurodiverse tween, I know the ache of trying to help others see beyond judgement; of fighting for understanding and inclusion in systems that weren’t built for difference. That advocacy can be exhausting. Too often, the harsh reactions to a child’s impulsive or out-of-the-box behaviour are overshadowed by the righteous condemnation of others. The consequences handed down by “the system”, or those within it, can far outweigh the action that triggered them.
It’s a quiet heartbreak shared by many parents, whether their child is neurodivergent or simply different in ways the world doesn’t easily accept.
Parenting tweens offers daily invitations to look within.
How do we speak about others when our kids are listening?
Do we lead with compassion or with criticism?
Do we forgive, or do we hold grudges and write people off when things get hard?
Every frustrated sigh, every eye-roll, every moment of impatience is observed, absorbed, and imitated.
Our children are our greatest teachers, but the lesson isn’t only about patience or boundaries, it’s about authenticity. If we want our children to be kind, resilient, and curious, we must live those same qualities in front of them.
So the question becomes: who are we, really, beneath our advocacy, our fears, and our quick judgements?
The gap between being a child and becoming a teen is now a short jump, not a leisurely walk. Online influences often arrive faster than wisdom, and while schools do extraordinary work teaching wellbeing, these lessons only truly take root when mirrored in everyday family life.
continued next page...
The real work happens at home, in the moments when our tweens challenge us or reveal our own unhealed places. Here, intention matters just as much as impact.
So next time you catch yourself speaking about others, pause, breathe, and consider what your child is learning from you about how to treat people, handle conflict, and recover from mistakes.
Each time we choose understanding over judgement, or repair over resentment, we gift our tweens a living example of what
it means to grow up whole, because, in the end, our children don’t just become who we want them to be, they become who we are, and that, perhaps, is the greatest invitation of all.

HOLIDAYS OFTEN MEAN A CHALLENGING JUGGLE BETWEEN WORK, LIFE AND KEEPING THE KIDS ENTERTAINED.
If you're dreading the meltdowns that may come when asked to put down the device, you're not alone. Triple P’s 2024 Parenting Pulse Survey revealed that social media use was identified as a common source of conflict within many families (85%). Screen time has also spiked dramatically in recent years.
The good news? With thoughtful planning and positive strategies, you can guide your family toward a more balanced and peaceful holiday period.
Setting clear expectations at the start of the holidays can help avoid daily tech battles. Instead of making decisions when tensions are high, try creating a screen time schedule together as a family when everyone is calm.
According to Australian guidelines, children and teenagers do best with no more than two hours of recreational screen time per day. Decide as a family when and where screens are acceptable and when they're off-limits.
It can also be helpful to create screen-free zones and times, such as family mealtimes and before bedtime (when blue light can impact sleep) When everyone understands the boundaries upfront, things are likely to go more smoothly. When kids feel included in creating them, they're far more likely to cooperate.
By creating predictability and variety in their day and framing conversations positively, you’ll be helping them focus on all the fun things you'll do together over the holidays, rather than what's being taken away.
You are your child's most powerful role model. The break from school offers a good opportunity to strengthen that influence. Kids look to their parents and carers for cues on how to navigate the world and screen time is no exception. Managing device use as a whole-family commitment creates a sense of teamwork rather than restriction.
When you set your own device boundaries, you're showing your children that everyone benefits from balance. Taking a break from screens and choosing family time over scrolling shows kids that life beyond the screen is genuinely engaging and worthwhile.
This approach also builds a stronger connection with your children. When the whole family participates together, children are far more likely to embrace the changes positively.
What’s the easiest way to reduce screen time? Give kids alternative activities that will keep them engaged.
Try exploring other activities your child enjoys, such as a trip to the local pool, a bike ride around the neighbourhood or setting up a backyard picnic. Getting moving can help boost everyone's mood and energy levels. It also helps create those positive neural pathways in developing brains that excessive screen time can impact.
Creative pursuits offer wonderful opportunities for learning and connection. Art projects, building with blocks, cooking together or even simple board games all work well. Beyond connection, these activities also engage different parts of the brain that help develop critical thinking skills that passive screen time simply can't match.
For many kids – especially during holidays when they're not seeing friends regularly – screens may be their primary social lifeline. Cutting off this connection without acknowledging children's feelings can lead to conflict.
Honest conversations about why you're setting boundaries around screen time can help kids understand that it's not about punishment –it's about their wellbeing. This includes better sleep, physical health and mental development. Children are more likely to be onboard with changes when they feel heard and understand the reasoning behind the rules.
For children and young people worried about staying connected with friends, try problem-solving some solutions together. Perhaps they can schedule video calls at set times. Or arrange face-toface catch-ups when possible. Showing that you understand their concerns goes a long way toward reducing resistance.
Be realistic about what's achievable. The holiday season can be chaotic and you probably won't always get things right. Some days will be better than others and that's completely okay.
The goal isn't perfection. It's progress toward a healthier balance that works for your family. With patience, consistency and a positive approach, you can navigate these school holidays with fewer tech tantrums and more genuine connection.

Playing alone, without being directed by an adult, helps kids develop problem-solving and reasoning skills. It nurtures imagination and creativity and can lead to stronger self-confidence and self-reliance.
Crucially, independent play also leads to better emotional self-regulation, according to a long-term study of thousands of Australian toddlers and children.
The ability to manage emotions in a healthy way positively impacts a wide range of vital abilities in later life, such as academic success and adult health.
Independent play is also good for you as a parent because it gives you some vital free time and breathing space while the kids are safely entertaining themselves.
This Summer
Children love to have fun, but sometimes, they need a little help in getting used to playing alone. Here are some ways to build this habit.
Playing alone is a skill that comes with age and experience. However, by the age of two most children can amuse themselves for around 30 minutes at a time. If your kids are used to having your constant attention, start with short daily periods of independent play. By sticking to the routine, it will become a normal, highly enjoyable part of their day.
Children don’t like feeling banished to their bedrooms, so create a safe space within the house where they still feel part of the family but can be left to their own devices. Child-proof this area according to your little one’s age and abilities. Stock it with toys and open-ended materials that they can choose from, such as dress-up items, blocks or art supplies.
Be sure that toys and activities are not too advanced for your child’s age so that they don’t become frustrated. Store everything safely within their reach and rotate toys and supplies regularly to keep things interesting.
Aside from your yard or living room, playgrounds are an amazing space for independent play. Swinging, climbing, jumping and balancing build your child’s sensory awareness, which improves their cognitive skills later on. Playgrounds also encourage imagination and develop self-confidence, so settle on a bench and let your little one explore on their own.

Don’t let younger siblings bother the one who is playing independently. Depending on your child’s age, stay within sight or within hearing range, but avoid interrupting them yourself. Let them get into the flow of whatever they have chosen to do. If they ask for help or ideas, ask them open-ended questions, such as “What do you think you could use this for?” rather than taking over.
Always ensure your child has your undivided attention during other parts of the day. This will reassure them that you will still play with them often, and that they can also enjoy their own alone time.
If your child is still reluctant to play alone, try these tips: Offer win-win choices: For example, ask, “Would you like to draw or dress up?”

Make boredom-buster jars: These idea-filled jars are perfect for older children.
Play with your child for a few moments: After some time, gently distance yourself as they become absorbed.
Avoid screen time during this period: It’s recommended that kids aged two to five have no more than one hour of screen time per day. Independent play is for more exciting activities.
Encouraging independent play this summer break will help your children build confidence, creativity and resilience. With a little planning and patience, you can support your child’s growth, giving them the freedom to explore, learn and thrive through summer and far into the future.

- THEN… LIFE HAPPENS.
The back-to-school costs hit hard. You forget to cancel a subscription. You get bored of meal prepping. And before you know it, the shiny new budget is collecting digital dust. It ends up forgotten somewhere between your inbox and your good intentions.
The idea of a “New Year, New Budget” sounds productive, but it often sets us up to fail. It usually:
•Relies on all-or-nothing thinking
•Doesn’t reflect your real lifestyle or expenses
•Leaves no room for flexibility when life changes unexpectedly
Skip the pressure-filled new years resolutions. Try gentle money habits that will grow with you over time.
Start small. Pick one area to focus on. It could be reducing Uber Eats orders. It might be opening a high-interest savings account at last. Build that habit slowly. Add another once the first one feels easy.
HERE’S A BETTER
Download the last couple of months of bank statements. Highlight your spending habits. Look at where your money is actually going. Then think about quick wins, easy changes you can make that will have an impact.
Avoid vague goals like “Save more.” Choose goals that are clear and achievable. For example, “Transfer 50 dollars into my savings acccount each week.”
Set up direct debits for your savings. This helps the habit stick without relying on memory or willpower.
There’s no prize for having the prettiest spreadsheet. The goal is to feel confident and in control. You do not need to feel restricted or exhausted by February. Skip the January guilt and give yourself financial habits that genuinely work.

what to expect when you want to be expecting
You could be forgiven for thinking that infertility is all about women. Our society identifies reproduction as mainly a women’s health concern, and they usually shoulder the burden of infertility treatment. But infertility — the inability to conceive after trying for 12 months — affects couples, not individuals.
Men’s reproductive health gets less attention than women’s. That’s appropriate since females literally carry the load when it comes to pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. But men are more than just sperm donors. A father’s health influences his partner’s pregnancy, and his child’s development and lifelong health and wellbeing. It also has a big impact on a couple’s ability to conceive.
Male infertility contributes to one in four cases of IVF in Australia but could be a factor in up to 50% of all infertile couples. For three quarters of those IVF cycles, the cause of the male fertility problem is unknown. That means that thousands of Australian couples every year have IVF treatments because of unexplained problems with the male partner’s fertility.
There are a couple of problems with overlooking men’s contributions to a couple’s infertility. There are genetic, anatomical and hormonal problems that affect men’s fertility that are treatable. By not investigating male infertility, we not only miss an opportunity to restore men’s fertility but to also improve their overall health.

Overlooking men’s impact on a couple’s infertility can also result in potentially unnecessary and invasive treatments for female partners. Infertility treatment is one of very few occasions when a patient without a health problem (a fertile woman) may receive treatment for a health problem in another person (her partner). Hormonal treatments to stimulate a woman’s ovaries and surgical collection of eggs are not without risk. Unnecessary use of IVF might be avoided if we can better understand fertility problems in men.
Until now, investigation of male infertility for Australian infertile couples has been inconsistent because there has been no specific guidance about how to diagnose and treat male infertility. With the recent publication of the first Australian Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Male Infertility, all health professionals now have an evidence-based path to follow for investigating and treating male fertility problems. The guidelines also help couples to understand what they should expect when it comes to male partners if they have concerns about their fertility.
Your GP is the right person to go to for advice about all aspects of your sexual and reproductive health, including fertility. They should offer you an evaluation of your fertility, including questions about your reproductive history, an examination (yes, you’ll need drop your pants because examination of your scrotum is necessary) and a semen analysis. The semen analysis will be done in an accredited laboratory; you’ll need to arrange to provide a semen sample, which is usually done in a private room at the testing laboratory. If your semen analysis raises any concerns, you should have another one done after about six weeks for confirmation.
Fertility assessments should occur in male and female partners at the same time because findings for one partner may affect investigations or treatment of the other.
After an examination by your GP and semen analysis, any abnormalities will be followed up, usually by a fertility specialist. Blood tests to measure hormone levels and genetic tests are usually done at this stage.
Around 1% of men have no sperm in their ejaculate, either because sperm production is very low or because of an obstruction somewhere along the reproductive tract. MRI or ultrasound imaging is recommended to separate these two causes, and surgery is recommended for obstruction in some cases. Hormonal treatments to stimulate sperm production might be used to treat some causes of very low sperm production.
Around one third of infertile men have a varicocele (a swelling of blood vessels in the scrotum), and if it is large enough it can affect sperm production, so surgery might be recommended.
In all cases, treatment of male fertility problems should be specifically targeted to the individual cause. Treating the underlying cause will also improve related health problems.
Ultimately, if a cause of infertility can’t be found, or if treatment is unsuccessful, assisted reproductive technologies can be used to help couples conceive. Even for men with very low sperm production or complete blockage of the reproductive tract, specialists can extract sperm surgically from the testes. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI — injection of a single sperm into an egg under a microscope) — can make a baby with just one healthy sperm.
It's only fair, and about time, for male and female partners to be considered equally when it comes to infertility. It’s best for their individual health, their shared fertility, and their future children.

How common is egg allergy and how should I introduce eggs to my baby?
Egg allergy is one of the more common allergies in children. It usually starts in infancy. Fortunately, most children grow out of egg allergy before they reach school age. But as long as a child is experiencing any allergy symptoms, it's important to avoid eggs (and all foods that contain eggs).
At around 6 months of age, and while continuing breastfeeding, babies should be introduced to a variety of foods, including cooked egg. Eggs should be well-cooked because raw eggs can carry harmful bacteria. Previously, it was recommended to avoid giving foods such as eggs to infants, to prevent allergies. This is not supported by research.
As with all new foods, it's best to introduce cooked egg on its own or with foods that your baby has already tried. That way, you can easily link any symptoms to the new food.
What is heat rash and what are the symptoms?
Heat rash is a harmless but very itchy skin rash. It is also called prickly heat, sweat rash or miliaria. It happens when your body sweats more than usual. Heat rash is more common during the summer months and in hot climates. Heat rash causes tiny red spots, clear blisters or lumps, an irritating itchy and prickling sensation and/or red skin.
What is swimmer's ear and what causes it?
Swimmer's ear is an infection of the skin of the outer ear canal and is also known as otitis externa. This type of infection is very common and affects all age groups. It usually gets better quickly with treatment.
Swimmer's ear is usually caused by a bacterial infection but can also be caused by fungus. You are more likely to get swimmer's ear if you regularly get water in your ear that doesn’t drain out. This can happen when you go swimming or wash your hair. This is because the wet ear canal softens the skin, which makes it easier to get infected.
What is bradycardia?
Bradycardia is a slower than normal heart rate. A normal adult resting heart rate is generally between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). If you have bradycardia, your heart rate is 40 to 60bpm. Bradycardia can be normal if you're sleeping or resting, you are a young, healthy adult, you're very physically fit

Our dentist has just recommended that we see the specialist orthodontist for an assessment of my child. I had orthodontic treatment as a teenager 25 years ago, has it changed much since then?
The patient experience in orthodontics has transformed dramatically over the past 25 years due to technological innovations, improved comfort and more personalized care.
TREATMENT OPTIONS AND AESTHETICS
Then: Bulky metal braces with large brackets, uncomfortable wires and headgear were common and there were limited aesthetic choices.
Now: Patients can choose from smaller, sleeker and more discreet metal braces, ceramic braces and clear aligners. Clear aligners are nearly invisible, removable and allow easy unrestricted eating and cleaning.
There are many more options for less invasive and less bulky early treatment options which can avoid the need for, or reduce treatment time in braces later.
COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE
Then: Braces were often painful, required more frequent adjustments and, due to their larger design, were more likely to irritate gums and cheeks.
Now: Modern braces use lightweight materials and advanced arch wires that reduce discomfort and shorten treatment time. Indirect bonding techniques significantly reduce the patients time in the chair when the braces are going on.
Clear aligners are smooth, minimally invasive and comfortable.
Digital 3D intra oral scans have reduced the need for putty like impressions making the process faster and more pleasant.
TECHNOLOGY AND PRECISION
Then: Treatment planning relied heavily on manual impressions and physical models.
Now: 3D imaging, digital treatment planning and custom fit appliances have revolutionalised orthodontics. These tools allow for more accurate diagnoses and tailored treatment plans. In the lead up to treatment, fewer in person appointments are needed thanks to remote monitoring and digital communication.
ACCESSIBILITY AND PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS
Then: Orthodontic care was less accessible and often seen as a luxury.
Now: There are more Specialist Orthodontic practices and interest free payment options have made orthodontics more inclusive. As a result, more and more adults are seeking treatment for both aesthetic and functional reasons.
Come and have a chat and you will see how these developments have improved the look, accessibility and comfort of Orthodontics

AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF FUNDAMENTAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

WHICH CAN BE EASILY MISSED OUT ON IS LEARNING TO LOSE. LEARNING TO LOSE IS CRUCIAL FOR BUILDING A HEALTHY SELF-ESTEEM IN CHILDREN BECAUSE IT TEACHES RESILIENCE, COPING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT, ADAPTABILITY AND PERSPECTIVE.
It is vital for children to understand that setbacks are a normal part of life, and it doesn’t mean that they have failed, or that they are a failure. Supported setbacks actually help foster a mindset that focuses on effort rather than solely on winning. Too many kids tie their value to achievement, and it’s leaving them anxious, perfectionistic, and quietly overwhelmed.
Our self-esteem is really critical in how we see ourselves and we know that having poor self-esteem is directly linked to poor mental health such as depression and anxiety. Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows one in seven children and adolescents aged 4 to 17 experienced mental illness while around 50% of adult mental illness begins before the age of 14.
While we never want to see our children struggle or face stressful situations, purely just to “build resilience”, the truth is that life isn’t always fair, and they will inevitably face challenges that we can’t and shouldn't be fixing for them.
Not every child is going to be great at sport, but they don’t have to be. It’s about helping them find enjoyment and praise their effort over the outcome: otherwise we are linking achievement to self-esteem. From school results to weekend sport, today’s culture of constant performance is teaching children that their worth depends on being the best. If they’re not top of the class or winning awards, they assume they’re not good enough.
Even well-meaning praise can backfire. If we overpraise or sugarcoat everything, kids stop trusting it or become addicted to it. Either way, they don’t learn to feel secure in themselves. Instead, shift the focus from performance to effort, from outcomes to resilience. Real confidence comes from having support to do hard things, not from avoiding discomfort. Frustration, failure, boredom, they’re not problems to solve. They’re essential parts of growing up and building resilience and emotion regulation skills.
There is also the consideration that children who excel can feel that a particular sport is their only identity. It’s important that they feel successful about themselves outside of their chosen sport.
Five tips for boosting self-esteem in children:
Playing cards or board games at home allows children to practice the uncomfortable feelings of losing at home with your support so that come game day, or those tricky moments at school, they feel prepared to handle those feelings in the heat of the moment. Children should learn to play by the rules and have respect for their opponents and the importance of team work and vital social skills.

Let them see you make mistakes too. If they can see that it is okay when their favourite person makes mistakes or doesn’t win, then they will feel a lot better when they do it too.
Celebrate the effort they have made, rather than the outcome they achieve. This might include comments like “I can see you tried really hard on your maths this week. I know how tricky it was, but you didn’t give up”. In sport, it might be something like “That was a really tough game, but you didn’t give up. You were such a good sport at the end when you went and shook the other team’s hands even when you were feeling disappointed.”
4
Sometimes, even when you have prepared, your kids are going to be sad that they lost the race or they didn’t win the award. These feelings are normal. Our job as parents is to allow their big feelings, and ride it out with them. In doing this, we help them learn to regulate their big feelings through co-regulation with us; we show them that feelings are okay and it is what you do with them that matters.
Just being there and supporting your child shows them that you love them just as they are; that you take absolute delight in them whether they are winning or not.

Nestled in a peaceful pocket of Mt Eliza, right next to St Thomas More Primary School, Mt Eliza House Academy is proud to be the newest addition to the respected Sanctuary of Early Learning group. This purpose-built Early Learning Centre offers long daycare specifically for 3 and 4-year-old children and delivers a high-quality, funded Kindergarten program designed to prepare children for a confident start to their school journey.
What sets Mt Eliza House Academy apart is its dedicated focus on kindergarten-only age groups. With no younger age rooms, the environment is carefully tailored to meet the needs of children in this pivotal stage of development. Experienced and passionate Early Childhood Teachers deliver a rich and engaging curriculum that balances academic preparation with creative exploration and emotional development. The program places a strong emphasis on school readiness, ensuring every child transitions to primary school equipped with the skills, confidence, and curiosity to thrive.
As part of the Mt Eliza House Academy philosophy, the service embraces a deep connection to the community, fostering strong partnerships with families and local organisations. This includes access to a number of enriching programs that go beyond the classroom, such as regular community excursions, special guest visits, and cultural celebrations that broaden children's understanding of the world around them.
One of the centre’s standout features is its Bush Kinder program - a truly unique and highly beneficial aspect of the curriculum. Children step outside the four walls of a traditional classroom and into nature’s playground. Here, they climb trees, explore creeks, build cubbies from branches, and observe the changing seasons firsthand. Rain or shine, the natural world becomes their classroom, offering endless opportunities for discovery, problemsolving, and collaboration. Research shows that Bush Kinder not only supports physical health but also enhances creativity, resilience, and emotional well-being.
Imagine a classroom without walls where children learn beneath the canopy of trees, feel the earth under their feet, and delight in the simple joys of outdoor play. Welcome to Bush Kinder: the outdoor learning revolution taking root in early childhood education and flourishing at Mt Eliza House Academy.
Whether you're seeking a nurturing start or an academically rich kindergarten experience for your child, Mt Eliza House Academy offers a warm, welcoming, and inspiring environment for families on the Mornington Peninsula.

Whether it’s one dozen or twelve, Bake Cookies Day is the day to get everything together and fill your house with the joy of the holidays!
Did you know… Cookies arrived in America in the 17th century, although the word arrived much later with the Dutch in its original form of “koekje”, meaning “little cake”. This was soon shortened to “cooky” or “cookie”, although cookies themselves seem to date back as far as 7th century Persia!

It started with the love of a mother’s hands and, upon growing up, this became an opportunity for pampering. Baths have become associated with warmth, comfort, and safety.
Celebrate by drawing a relaxing tub of foamy warmth, for yourself or grab those bath crayons and toys and have a splash while your babe enjoys their nighttime routine.
Did you know… Cleopatra, known for her beauty rituals, was reportedly bathed in milk and honey and was a forerunner to today’s bubble bath concepts. Ancient Roman baths, called “thermae,” used oils to create a light foam, believed to cleanse the skin and soothe the spirit.

Encouraging kids to participate in activities offer opportunities for social connection, leadership, and self-expression outside of academics, helping children discover new interests and a well-rounded character. Our region offers a myriad of clubs, sports, and local groups that may align with their current interests or pique new ones! Signing up for classes helps develop important life skills like teamwork, time management,
and problem-solving, while also building confidence, a sense of belonging, and improved mental health. Plus, there’s the added bonus of being able to have conversations with your child about things they enjoy. Even small commitments like a weekly art class or a team sport, can make a big difference in your child's growth and happiness

The day highlights the power of kind words and how they can create a ripple effect of happiness and goodwill in our communities. Celebrate by transforming your home or office with a splash of kindness. Place sticky notes with heartfelt compliments around for others to find. It will bring a smile and a moment of joy.

Did you know… Adrienne Koopersmith created Pay a Compliment Day on February 6, 1995. While riding a bus on a chilly day in Chicago, Koopersmith saw someone waving to get on the bus even though they weren’t at a stop. The bus driver stopped and let the person on.

Bubble Wrap Day is a day that celebrates the joy of popping bubble wrap, a simple activity that brings immense pleasure and stress relief to many. This day also honours bubble wrap’s crucial role in protecting fragile items during shipping, highlighting its versatility and importance beyond just packing material.
Celebrate by Popping ‘til You drop! Gather your friends for a bubble wrappopping contest. See who can burst the most bubbles in the shortest time. Did you know… The history of bubble wrap is quite fascinating. Invented in 1957 by engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes, bubble wrap initially failed as a textured wallpaper. It wasn’t until later that its potential for packaging was realized. By 1961, bubble wrap had found its first major use in protecting IBM 1401 computers during shipping.

World Whale Day was founded in Maui, Hawaii in 1980 to honour humpback whales. This day was started as an idea by Greg Kauffman, founder of the Pacific Whale Foundation, to raise awareness about the threat of extinction faced by humpback whales.
Celebrate by learning more about whales. Education is vital when it comes to raising awareness of the plight of whales and the benefits they have to the planet’s entire ecosystem. Did you know… Humpback Whales only eat for a small part of the year. Their fat stores keep them healthy for around 6-7 months while they are in the process of migrating to the Antarctic from their tropical areas of breeding.

BREASTFEEDING IS NATURAL — BUT IT ISN’T ALWAYS EASY. MOST MOTHERS FIND MEETING THEIR BREASTFEEDING GOALS TAKES PATIENCE, DETERMINATION AND LOTS OF SUPPORT. HOW YOUR BIRTH AND EARLY POSTNATAL CARE ARE MANAGED CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE, SO IT HELPS TO PREPARE EARLY, LEARN WHAT’S NORMAL, AND BUILD A STRONG SUPPORT NETWORK BEFORE YOUR BABY ARRIVES.
Don’t wait for your baby to arrive to start learning about breastfeeding. The first thing your baby will be looking for after birth is the nearest place to feed — and they won’t wait for you to read the manual!
One of the best ways to prepare is to attend an Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) Breastfeeding Education Class. Book online at breastfeeding.asn.au
These friendly, small-group workshops (about three hours) are run by experienced breastfeeding educators who are also mothers. They focus on what really matters in the first days, weeks, and months; helping you understand how breastfeeding works and how to make it work for you.
The most important parts of your birth plan aren’t about candles or playlists; they’re about how you and your baby are cared for immediately after birth.
The Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI), developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF, promotes hospital practices that protect and support breastfeeding such as early skin-to-skin contact and avoiding unnecessary separation or supplementation.
If you’re not birthing in a BFHI-accredited hospital, you may need to be more proactive. Discuss your wishes with your care team and include them in your written plan. For example:
“Our goal is to exclusively breastfeed our baby. If supplementation is medically indicated, we have expressed colostrum available.”
“Please delay weighing and routine tests until after the first breastfeed.”
“If the mother cannot hold the baby, the support person will do so skin-to-skin.”
You might aim to avoid formula while breastfeeding is being established, plan to express milk when you return to work, or decide to combine breastfeeding and bottle feeding. Families with allergy risks might prefer to avoid formula altogether and use expressed or donor milk if needed.
There are no right or wrong goals. What matters most is that your choices are informed, flexible, and supported.
Colostrum is the first milk your body produces, usually beginning around 16 weeks of pregnancy. Some mothers notice a few drops or dried residue on their nipples, while others see none at all. This is all perfectly normal.
Expressing and freezing colostrum before birth has become more common. While often recommended for mothers whose babies might need early supplementary feeds (such as with gestational diabetes), many parents like to store a little “just in case.”
If you’re 36 weeks or more, have checked with your care provider, and find it comfortable, go ahead; you’ll probably collect just a few millilitres, and that’s enough. If expressing feels stressful, stop; your milk will be ready when your baby feeds.
Colostrum is thick, golden, and packed with immune protection, nutrients, and healthy bacteria; the perfect first food until your milk “comes in” a few days after birth.
STEP TWO
There’s no need to rush those first feeds. If everything is well, ask to have your baby placed skin-to-skin and request hands-off help from midwives. Babies know how to find the breast; they just need time. Stay skin-to-skin for at least the first hour, and longer if you wish.
There’s no medical reason to weigh or measure your baby immediately after birth. Delaying the first weighing until after the first feed or even 24 hours gives a more accurate baseline. Early weighing can cause unnecessary concern about “weight loss” and lead to unnecessary formula top-ups.

Parents have the right to request that weighing and other routine tasks wait until after the first feed — or even until the next day — to protect that precious early bonding time.
ABA Members can also access The first 72 hours complete package
The first 72 hours after birth is an important time for you and your baby and the beginning of your special relationship. Although it is an exciting time, it is common for parents to be nervous or unsure of what to expect in those early hours. ABA's 24/7 online learning and support resource will guide you through the first hours with your new baby, providing you with practical information and support.
STEP THREE
By the middle of the first week, your body and your baby are busy establishing milk production. Breasts can feel full and heavy, and your baby may feed almost constantly. This is normal and temporary.
If your breasts are too full for your baby to attach, express a little milk first to soften them. Keep feeding frequently — 8 to 12 times OR MORE in 24 hours — and rest whenever you can. This intense phase passes quickly as your baby becomes more efficient and your supply adjusts perfectly to their needs.
STEP FOUR
As you learn your baby’s cues, there will be times you feel uncertain. That’s normal. Watch your baby, not the clock; they’ll tell you when they’re hungry. A calm baby attaches more easily than a crying one, so offer the breast early and often.
Babies are not miniature adults, and their sleep looks nothing like ours. Adults move through 90-minute cycles, but newborns’ sleep cycles last only 20–50 minutes. About half of this is light, active sleep when they twitch, grunt, and wake easily. This light sleep supports brain development and ensures they wake to feed often.
Waking through the night isn’t a problem; it’s protective. Feeding and waking frequently are normal for all babies and part of healthy development. How you feed does not change how long babies sleep.
STEP FIVE
Most breastfeeding challenges can be solved with the right help. Pain is a sign that something isn’t right; call the ABA Breastfeeding Helpline (1800 68 62 68), or see your child health nurse or an IBCLC lactation consultant.
continued next page...
Most parents want to breastfeed their babies and most are doing so when they leave the hospital. Yet the early weeks can be tough, and about one in three babies receive some formula in the first month. If you’ve needed to give formula as well as breastfeeds, you haven’t failed. Nearly all breastfeeding problems can be fixed, but finding the right help can take time. Conflicting advice from professionals, friends, and relatives can be confusing, so come back to the basics: how your baby is attached, how milk is being removed, and how often feeding happens. Once those are right, everything else usually follows.
By around six weeks, your breasts will feel softer and less full which is a sign they’re working efficiently, not that your milk is disappearing. Most babies still feed eight or more times in 24 hours, including overnight.
Feeding responsively and keeping your baby close supports ongoing milk production. When breastfeeding begins well, it can continue smoothly for as long as you and your baby wish.

Being prepared, informed, and supported makes all the difference — and remember, you’re never alone on this journey. STEP SIX

Summer in Australia is all about sunshine, celebrations, and long days spent near the water. But with this comes a reality every parent knows too well, the water can be unpredictable, and strong swimming skills can save lives.
At Paul Sadler Swimland Carrum Downs, they believe learning to swim isn’t just a recreational activity; it’s a vital life skill. Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in Australian children, and most incidents occur during the warmer months when families are in and around pools, beaches, lakes, and rivers more often.
Structured, consistent swimming lessons build the skills every child needs to stay safer: confident floating, deep-water recovery, endurance, treading water, and the ability to remain calm and capable if the unexpected happens. Their survival-focused program ensures that every swimmer, from babies to older kids, is taught the essential techniques that truly make a difference in real-life situations.
But beyond safety, learning to swim gives children confidence, resilience, and a sense of achievement that carries far beyond the pool.
As you prepare for and enjoy a fun and active summer, make swimming lessons part of your family’s safety plan. Enrolment is open now at Paul Sadler Swimland Carrum Downs.

There’s a new kid on the block in Mount Martha! Little Paper Planes is a children’s boutique that celebrates the joy and wonder of childhood. A new venture from local parents Rebecca and Brendan, Little Paper Planes stocks a unique and wonderful mix of toys, art supplies, games, puzzles, books and gifts.
“When we were planning the store, the core value we kept coming back to is gifts you feel good about giving” says Rebecca. And Brendan’s experience with building and designing hospitality venues came into play for the interior and feel of the store. “We always questioned why every kids store felt so overwhelming, and over stimulating. They’re often white boxes with a thousand images coming at you, with mountains of plastic under bright white lights. We really felt it could be done better, for both the adults and the kids”.
“Everything is very carefully selected” Rebecca says, “We’re very consciously no batteries and no tech. There’s nothing wrong with those things, but It’s nice coming into a space that is purposely celebrating creativity and creation. When buying for the shop, I aim for things that have soul, that you touch and feel the quality, the work, and the passion that has gone into making it.”
Little Paper Planes stocks teddy bears and collectables from German company Steiff, who made the first teddy bear in 1902, and heirloom bears from UK company Charlie Bears. They have homewares and toys made with calm Danish style from Ferm Living - the Pond mirror in the window is an absolute standout. Quut beach toys from Belgium look to rethink what a beach toy is - every item can be used multiple ways, reducing the amount needed to carry, but also encouraging creativity in how the toys are used.

There’s French whimsy from Moulin Roty, and Backgammon sets from MOMA. All mixed in with locally made cards from three different suppliers, Melbourne owned felt and fair trade legends Tara Treasures, and local award winning Hey Doodle reusable mats. A Sydney mum makes the completely natural Bio DoUgh play dough, and Anamalz are designed and owned by a Red Hill local. They’ve recently added Maileg to their family of brands, and have an impressive selection of books, including some rare and signed copies.
“We aim to bring the best of the world, and the best of our local market. I look for products that are sustainably produced, use low toxic or natural paints and materials, and have clear supply chains. Our art section I’m especially proud of, we have some amazing heritage brands and high quality paints, brushes, chalk and pencils.”
So if you’re looking for an awesome present, for an awesome little person in your life, you need to visit Little Paper Planes!
