Impact of Giving Report 2024

I am delighted to share our annual Impact of Giving Report with you, our valued donors. In 2024, we received $427,687 in donations in support of a number of priorities. The generosity of the Pembroke community is to be commended and I am grateful for every gift.
In 2024, we granted almost $280,000 to Pembroke Scholarships benefiting five deserving students. We granted over $160,000 to the Building Fund to develop and improve our campus facilities. And, I was privileged to approve distributions of almost $30,000 to support families facing financial challenges through the Principal’s Hardship Bursaries.
Your support for Pembroke has never been more vital. Like many independent schools, we fund major capital projects separately from the ongoing operational costs covered by school fees. To bring our bold vision to life and create exceptional opportunities for our students, we depend on the generosity of our community.
My sincere thanks to the members of the Pembroke Foundation Board and the Development Office for their commitment to growing the culture of philanthropy at Pembroke.
I look with excitement to what we can achieve in 2025 and beyond.
Mark Staker Principal
The generosity of the Pembroke community is to be commended and I am grateful for every gift.
The 50th anniversary year of Pembroke was a year of change for the Pembroke School Foundation. In May 2024, Julia Steele Scott stepped down from her role as Chair, however she remains a valued member of the Foundation Board. I was honoured to be invited to replace Julia as Chair and have been warmly welcomed by the team. Vincent Ciccarello stepped off the Foundation Board into the position of Director of Development and Philanthropy (commencing April 2024) and we are thrilled to have him in this role.
At the beginning of Term 2, we celebrated the opening of the John Moody Dining Room for boarders, the King’s Café and Yellow Submarine Too Café. Generously supported by a community Giving Day and ongoing fundraising efforts by our P&F Committee, the fabulous new facility was officially opened in September 2024 by Jane Miller (former Chair of the School Board) and Melissa Mellen (current Chair of the School Board). We thank the community for getting behind this exciting and much needed facility.
The 50th anniversary of Pembroke saw community engagement around Australia and overseas. We visited and re-engaged with members of the Pembroke community in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, London, Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney and Perth. The 100th anniversary of King’s College was marked with a week of celebrations in September providing a wonderful opportunity for engagement and re-engagement with many. We continue to host multiple events across the School, and beyond, to which many of our community are invited and greatly enjoy attending.
In 2024, our fundraising efforts were focused on raising funds in support of the reopening of Turner House which has been closed since the pandemic. Our sincere thanks to those who supported this appeal with a gift. The reopening of Turner House will provide an opportunity fot the expansion of our Boarding community.
We have ambitious plans for the future – from raising greatly needed funds for our Indigenous Education Program to laying the foundations for a major capital campaign for the Haslam Precinct. We look forward to sharing these plans with our community in the very near future.
In 2024, we received gifts from 421 donors. Gifts ranged from donations to the Building Fund supporting campus renewal and future building projects, our Scholarships and Indigenous Education Program and support for the Endowment Fund. We are thankful for every single gift, no matter the size.
Our Scholarships Program continues to thrive, and we are grateful to all those who have and continue to support this. We now offer several Scholarships made possible thanks to philanthropic giving, and in 2024, five students in Years 11 and 12 were recipients of this incredible support. Scholarships supported entirely by philanthropic giving are the Pembroke Community Scholarship, the Margaret Sellars' Scholarship, the Indulkaninna Foundation Scholarship and the Scholarship for Love of Learning in the IB.
We were delighted to facilitate two new prizes supported by philanthropy. The Legh and Helen Davis Prize for Excellence in Drama and Theatre, Years 10-12 and the DR Craddock Award for Art. Our thanks to both families for their generous gifts.
Along with farewelling Vincent Ciccarello as a Foundation Board member, Nick Ross and Ben Wilson retired as Board members, and we welcomed Keng Lim and Albert Li. My sincere thanks to Vince, Nick and Ben for their contribution to the Foundation Board.
We would particularly like to acknowledge the contribution of Nick Ross. Nick was appointed to the Foundation Board Committee in August 2014. He also served as Chair of the Investment Subcommittee and was instrumental in establishing and growing both the Pembroke Endowment and Pembroke Public Ancillary Funds. He is a longstanding member of the School community, both as an old scholar (1974 King’s and Pembroke) and past parent – William (2019) and Sam (2022).
The Ross Family have been generous donors to the School with gifts in support of the Shipsters Building Project and School Building Fund but also in the establishment of the Ross Family (Leadership) Medal for an outstanding Year 12 student. As Chair and Director of the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, Nick directed his annual Chairman’s Grant towards bursaries to assist the families of Pembroke students in financial need over six years. In addition, the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation has funded several Scholarships to allow deserving day and boarding students access to a Pembroke education.
Nick’s personal philanthropy and advice while serving on the Foundation Board and Investment Sub-Committee have been instrumental in advancing the School’s philanthropic and operational potential, and we will miss Nick’s valuable experience and expertise.
Thank you to all of those who support the Pembroke School Foundation. We look forward to working with you in 2025.

In 2024, five students were the beneficiary of Scholarships supported by philanthropic giving. The following Scholarships are supported by gifts from our generous community:
The Pembroke Community Scholarship is available for families who aspire to an excellent education but are not able to fund an independent school education for their child due to social or financial disadvantage or adverse personal circumstances.
Established by a Pembroke old scholar family, the Scholarship offers remission on Pembroke Boarding fees and is offered to students facing exceptional circumstances whose principal residence is in a rural area of South Australia or interstate.
Pembroke Scholarship for the Love of Learning in the IB
This Scholarship has been established by a generous and long-standing member of the Pembroke School community for students wishing to study the IB Diploma who would otherwise be unable to access a Pembroke education.
Margaret Sellars' Scholarship
Established by inaugural Foundation Patron Mrs Margaret Bennett (nee Sellars, Girton 1939), this Scholarship supports students from rural primary producing communities who may not otherwise consider attending Pembroke.
Receiving the Scholarship for the Love of Learning in the IB was a truly lifechanging experience and one I will always be grateful for. Growing up overseas at an international school in Malaysia, I always had my heart set on studying the IB. Its values of open mindedness and global awareness aligned with my international perspective and upbringing. During my time at Pembroke, I found myself part of a close-knit, eager-to-learn cohort of IB students from which I created lifelong connections. Surrounded by like-minded peers and passionate teachers, I was able to develop strong study skills and extend my knowledge to a university level. Having completed my first semester in the Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences (Advanced) at the University of Adelaide, I can confidently say that this Scholarship and the IB education it made possible have prepared me excellently for my university studies. I am extremely thankful for the role this Scholarship played in not only shaping my academic journey, but also the person I am proud to be today.

We are so grateful to the Pembroke Parents’ and Friends’ Association for their ongoing and incredible fundraising efforts.
In 2024, the P&F Committee led by President Patricia Melzer ran a series of highly successful fundraising events with almost $30,000 raised across multiple events and initiatives including the annual Mothers’ Day Lunch, the very popular Dads' Night held at the Weber Academy, the Junior School Movie Night, our ongoing partnership with The Athlete's Foot and a highly successful 50th anniversary gin fundraiser.
In September, the P&F were delighted to attend the opening of the John Moody Dining Room for boarders, Yellow Submarine Too Café and the King's Café. Over several years, $300,000 was raised by the P&F to support this incredible new development on the Middle School Campus.
In 2025, the P&F Association will be focusing their fundraising efforts on the redevelopment of the Junior School Playground.
Whether your bequest is large or modest, its impact will be profound — shaping the lives of students for generations to come.
At Pembroke, we believe that every gift tells a story – of generosity, foresight and a deep belief in the power of education to transform lives.
Leaving a bequest to Pembroke in your will is a powerful way to ensure that your values endure and that future generations of students benefit from the same opportunities that matter to you.
We are honoured to have received bequests from a small but extraordinary group of community members whose legacies have left a lasting mark on the School. Their vision and commitment have helped shape Pembroke into the vibrant, future-focused learning environment it is today.
Thanks to gifts in wills, we have been able to realise projects such as the Dorothy Yates Hall and the DD Harris Wing of the Boarding House – spaces that continue to inspire and support students every day. One particularly impactful bequest came from former Girton teacher Mrs Dorothy Loughead, who generously gifted a property to the School. The proceeds of that gift helped bring the Girton Arts Precinct to life.
To honour and celebrate those who make this enduring gesture, Pembroke established the Claridge Harris Club, named in recognition of Dorothy Ward (nee Claridge, Girton 1939) and her family’s contributions to Girton Girls’ School, and DD Harris, whose legacy helped shape King’s College. Members of the Claridge Harris Club are acknowledged by the School and invited to connect with fellow bequestors and the Pembroke community. Importantly, membership allows us to express our deep gratitude during your lifetime.
Whether your bequest is large or modest, its impact will be profound – shaping the lives of students for generations to come.
For a confidential conversation or to explore how your legacy could support the future of Pembroke, please contact development@pembroke.sa.edu.au or +61 8 8366 7094.
Pembroke has a long and proud history of educating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, with enrolments dating back to the 1960s. The Indigenous Education at Pembroke (IE@P) program was formally established in 2009 through the generosity of Girton old scholar, Mrs Margaret Bennett (nee Sellars, Girton 1939), and continues to grow through community support.
In partnership with The Smith Family, Pembroke offers the Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP), which provides partial scholarships for First Nations students. With strong demand in 2024, 15 applications were received, six shortlisted and three students offered places for 2025. The School relies on donor support to help bridge the remaining fee gap and ensure the program’s sustainability.
In October, we proudly farewelled two graduating scholars including Abbey Yunupingu, who began at Pembroke in Year 7 and served as Deputy Head Girl Boarder in 2024. Abbey, chosen as School Valedictorian, delivered a powerful farewell speech to the Class of 2024. Both graduates have received university offers to pursue double degrees.
Beyond financial support, Pembroke actively embraces Indigenous culture and education. Highlights in 2024 included:
• Participation in the annual National Reconciliation Week Breakfast, with student-led fundraising to support Stolen Generations guests.
• Ongoing cultural education and engagement by Uncle Cedric Varcoe at Old Watulunga.
• Kaurna language studies for Middle School students, guided by Uncle Jamie Goldsmith and Aunty Elaine Magias.
• The launch of Aboriginal Cultural Awareness training for staff, led by Felicity Ryan, a longtime supporter of Indigenous Education at Pembroke.
Guided by our 2030 Strategic Plan and Reconciliation Action Plan, Pembroke is committed to deepening partnerships with First Nations communities.
We sincerely thank our donors for their continued support.
Pembroke has shaped me into the person I am today. The community we’ve built here...has left a lasting impact on each of us.
– Abbey Yunupingu (2024) Valedictory

Pem b roke School gave us two wonder f ul gifts. The first was a top-class education for our three chil d ren, and the second was a life l ong group of friends for us and our chil d ren. Donat i ng to the Foundation is our way of say i ng thank you.

The building fund contribution enables the School to continue to be maintained and developed so future generations can enjoy the opportunities our kids have enjoyed. Without the building fund the School’s long term future would be decidedly more difficult to plan and enable.
– Current parents, James and Nicky Orchard
I want to give back to the school that shaped my future, and that provided a wonderful learning environment and pastoral care setting for our children. I want to ensure that the opportunities that our children enjoyed are available for all young people regardless of background and economic circumstances. The more diverse the school population the better the long-term outcomes for all students.
