PATIENCE: A WATCHFUL GUARDIAN

Psalm 130

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD; 2 Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. 3 If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. 5 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. 6 I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. 7 Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. 8 He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

When are the times that you most dislike waiting?

“Depths” in Psalm 130 is understood to be compared to Sheol, the word the Old Testament uses to refer to the “realm of the dead.” The writer of this Psalm certainly could identify with us when today we say “my life is in the pits!”

The word that is translated “wait” literally means … to wait. However, when understood in a biblical context—and especially when the object of waiting is the Lord, there is always the expectation that there will be salvation or deliverance at the end of the delay.

Consider some of the times that the people of God have had to “wait upon the Lord:”

• Aged Abraham and Sarah longing for a child

• Joseph being sold into slavery

• Moses spending forty years before being called (at 80!) to lead the Exodus

• The forty years of wilderness wandering before entering the Promised Land

• The seventy years of the Babylonian exile

• The years waiting for the Messiah to come

When we wait, our hope should not be in ourselves, but “Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.” – Psalm 130:7
