SERMON OUTLINE

A DEEP SLEEP

Psalm 127

A prayer for work and home.

Without God, Our Efforts Are In Vain (vv. 1–2)

• Two things that don’t last very long without God.

□ “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” (v. 1)

• The subtle sign of self-reliance.

□ “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat.” (v. 2a)

• The sure sign of God’s love.

□ “...for he grants sleep to those he loves.” (v. 2b)

With God, Our Legacy Is Secure (vv. 3–5)

• God’s love changes your view of family.

□ Children are blessings, not burdens .

▷ “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” (v. 3)

▷ “Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.” (5a)

□ Children are meant to be sent, not kept.

▷ “Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.” (v. 4)

• God’s love changes your standing “at the gate.”

□ “They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court [enemies at the gate].” (v. 5b)

□ “And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.” (Hebrews 13:12)

“Psalm 127 confronts us with the insanity of loading all the burdens of life on our shoulders and trying to make it on our own.” Paul David Tripp

“God, all that is most real and most personal in life—sons and daughters, friends and neighbors, parents and spouse—is provided through your creation, not by my struggle. What you have given so miraculously help me to enjoy gratefully.” Eugene Peterson

“Helicopter parenting and over-involvement in our children’s lives, cannot ensure their health and happiness. Unless the Lord enters their lives, all our watching is in vain. Giving our children to God is the only way we get to keep them…. It is not up to me, and it never was.” Tim Keller

Daily Dwell: August 17-23

“Unless the L ord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the L ord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” - Psalm 127:1
