About Peace Lutheran College

Peace Lutheran College is a multi-cultural, co-educational day and boarding College for students from Kindy to Year 12. Founded in 1994, Peace Lutheran College is part of the larger system of Lutheran schools in Queensland Lutheran Education Queensland As well as serving Lutherans in North Queensland, Torres Strait Islands, Papua New Guinea and further afield, Peace is a school with a mission to serve families by providing a quality Christian education for all.

Our Lutheran identity is central to all that we do at Peace Lutheran College, and there is much in our current culture, vision and values that will remain relevant to the needs of learners for years to come, and the lives they are likely to live. We value the fundamental importance of co-education, of diversity, of our commitment to a holistic education, and our culture of inclusiveness and acceptance of differences.

Being multi-cultural, an integral part of its methodology will be to continue the cultures of all present in such a way that teaching strategies will address individual differences, thus enabling each student to learn according to their preferred manner. Cultural inclusivity will ensure that we all benefit from the culture of each. Being a Boarding College, Peace attracts students from outside of the Cairns area, thus adding to its multi- cultural flavour. These students, bringing their respective cultures to Peace, enrich the lives of the day students by sharing their experiences and ways of life. In a similarly reciprocate manner, day students too enrich the lives of boarders.

Our Mission

To develop resilient and compassionate young people who use God’s guidance to contribute positively to our community and the world.

It is through this mission we aim to offer a quality schooling experience where God’s love for every person is evident and informs all that we do.

Our Vision

To be at the forefront of effective and innovative education; empowering tomorrow’s citizens, today.

This is achieved through our education model, which is a progressive approach to learning; adopting modern-day education transformations that connects classroom learning to real life, better preparing students for their future after school.

Our Values

To achieve our Mission at Peace Lutheran College:

We will value Peace, Excellence, Respect and Community by nurturing grace, harmony and high aspirations, and by showing respect for all through the building of positive relationships.

Our Logo

The cross is central and sloping forward showing that Peace is a Christian College on the move. The dove is the universal and Biblical symbol of Peace.

The mountains, waterfall and palm tree signify our location in Tropical North Queensland.

Lutheran Ethos

The Lutheran Church of Australia bases all its teachings on the Christian Bible, which it regards as the inspired and inerrant Word of God. These teachings are expounded in the Book of Concord, which comprises the accepted public confession of Lutheran doctrine and belief. All staff of Lutheran schools are required to carry out their responsibilities and duties in accordance with these teachings. In particular, this means recognising that Lutheran schools, as agencies of the Lutheran Church, exist to provide a special ministry and mission to the people of Australia, that all teaching and learning in them is informed by the Word of God and God's love and forgiveness govern the life of each school.

The document "The Teacher in the Lutheran School", prescribes in part that besides being qualified and competent educators, teachers will be people committed to the Christian faith, willing to identify with, uphold and promote the

Staff Information Handbook Updated: 23.03.2023 Printed copies are not controlled Page 5 of 20

Lutheran Ethos of the school and willing to exemplify and model behaviour which positively reflects their commitment to these principles. All other staff are required, as part of their employment in Lutheran Schools, to make this same commitment.

More information about the Lutheran faith can be found on the Lutheran Church of Australia website The 9-part video series ‘Presence’ gives a good overview of what Lutherans believe. It is strongly recommended that all staff explore this to help them understand what it is that Lutherans believe.

The Teacher in the Lutheran School

The Lutheran School, as an agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia seeks to carry out its ministry and mission to the people of Australia.

The specific ministry and mission of the Lutheran school is to provide quality formal education in which the Word of God informs all learning, teaching, and activities and where forgiveness and grace govern the relationships of the members of the school community.

To fulfill this ministry and mission the teacher in the Lutheran school, as well as being a qualified and competent educator, will be one who is willing to identify with, uphold and promote the Lutheran ethos of the school and who will exemplify and model the Christian lifestyle in and beyond the school.

Worship at Peace Lutheran College – Staff Expectations

What is Christian Worship?

Worship begins and ends with the presence and acts of the Triune God. It goes from heaven to earth, from God to human beings. At Peace Lutheran College this is seen clearly in the way in which God conveys love, grace, and mercy to human beings. Worship can be understood to have a strongly sacramental thrust which consists in God’s action towards us. Human beings respond to God’s presence and activity in praise and thanksgiving

Thus, the dynamic of Christian worship is God’s action, human response.

Duty of Care

Duty of care is a legal obligation that requires schools to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of foreseeable harm. As part of this duty, school staff are required to provide adequate supervision of students. ‘Supervision’ refers to any situation where school staff, in the execution of their formal or informal school duties, direct, oversee, watch over and are responsible for children during the performance of, or operation of, a school approved activity. All school staff supervising students owe a duty of care to those students.

Roll taking

As part of our duty of care, it is essential that we know where each student is at all times. Therefore, accurate rolls need to be taken at the start of each lesson. If students are missing from class, it is essential that Reception is contacted immediately.

Staff Resource: Secondary School – Roll Taking and Student Absence Procedure

Classroom Supervision

If a teacher needs to leave their allocated class during class time, alternative supervisory arrangements must be made.

Staff Information Handbook Updated: 23.03.2023 Printed copies are not controlled Page 7 of 20

Yard Duty Supervision

It is the staff member’s responsibility to continue supervising the allocated area until the next scheduled person arrives. Legal opinion suggests that a staff member leaving the allocated area prior to the replacement supervisor’s arrival could be liable for negligence should an injury occur to a student while unsupervised.

To fulfil the duty of care a Supervisor is not expected to have absolute control of the entire designated area but to be actively supervising in that area as would a reasonable person. Refer to the following resources on the Staff Intranet:

 Yard Duty Responsibilities – Primary School

 Yard Duty Responsibilities – Secondary School

Bus Supervision

As part of their normal duties staff can be scheduled for supervision of students while travelling on or waiting for a scheduled school bus service, or excursion bus. Staff need to spread out on the buses to provide adequate supervision.

Supervision at Activities out of School

Staff involved in the supervision of students at approved activities out of hours or away from school will continue to owe a duty of care to those students even if the supervision is done in a voluntary capacity.

Supervision of Sporting Teams

A staff member as manager or coach of a school sporting team is responsible for supervision of students at all times unless the students are under the control of their parents.

Absences - Staff

• Lesson plans need to be uploaded to Teacher Kiosk prior to the absence.

• Yard Duty supervision must be covered (if possible, via a swap with acolleague).

Home Groups

The primary responsibility of the Home Group teacher is to build a non-academic relationship with each student, one in which the student sees that they are appreciated and cared for by school adults. Ensure that you have their respect by setting a good, Christian example, upholding school rules firmly and fairly, and encouraging a spirit of pride in being a member of the Peace community. Try to get to know your students and build a rapport with them so they feel comfortable in approaching you with any difficulties. It is important to build a relationship with parents too. This of course requires time, but a phone call, email or a quick note in the diary helps to maintain contact and parental support and makes the job so much easier. Remember to try to communicate the good as well as the bad.
