Message from our Principal

Deciding about your child's educational future is one of the most important decisions parents need to make. You need to choose a school that works in partnership with your own personal beliefs and values in raising your child.

Peace is a place of Christian faith and excellence in learning where people are inspired, cared for, and equipped to be active contributors to society. We strive for every person to achieve their personal excellence every day – to be better today than they were yesterday, in all aspects of life.

We do this by being:

• learning-centred – focusing on the holistic needs of each student

• spiritually sensitive – understanding that life has a spiritual dimension

• environmentally aware – we are called to care for the world we live in.

We do this:

• with a conscience – striving for personal integrity in all circumstances

• with a heart – focusing on our relationships with one another and caring for those in need

• with a heritage – celebrating the diversity of our personal and national backgrounds.

We believe every student is a special gift from God each with unique gifts, skills, and talents, which when nurtured enable them to become active citizens beyond our college. Every child is treated with care, dignity, and respect and encouraged to have control over their learning. Each is challenged to discover, develop and use their gifts and abilities for personal growth and service to others. We hope that the enriching and fulfilling opportunities experienced in our community stay with students for life.

Peace Lutheran College is widely regarded as a caring school. We place a high priority on pastoral care. Our staff works hard at developing nurturing relationships with students because encouraging and affirming relationships lie at the heart of effective learning.

I firmly believe Peace Lutheran College is a school community where our children can grow and develop, knowing we are grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and surrounded by His love.

I look forward to welcoming you to Peace,

About Peace Lutheran College

Our History

Founded in 1994, Peace Lutheran College is part of the larger system of Lutheran schools in Queensland - Lutheran Education Queensland. As well as serving Lutherans in North Queensland, Torres Strait Islands, Papua New Guinea and further afield, Peace is a school with a mission to serve families by providing a quality Christian education for all.

The Queensland Education Department assumed responsibility for the primary school in the Aboriginal community at Hope Vale in 1972, mainly due to the inability of the Lutheran Church to supply teachers. From this move, the possibility of a Lutheran school in North Queensland was discussed informally in many circles.

It was at a Far North Queensland Lutheran Mission Committee meeting, held in conjunction with the Hope Vale Mission Board in 1988, that this suggestion first received ser ious consideration.

At the 1988 Annual General Meeting of the Trinity Lutheran Congregation, a Lutheran School Investigation Committee was elected. These members were Greg Wharton, Frank Jacobsen, Julene Lander and David Spanagel. The official process had begun. Ken Albinger from the Queensland Lutheran Schools department outlined the process to be followed.

Land purchase

Aub Muller (a representative from the Lutheran Church) and David Spanagel (Investigation Committee) searched for suitable sites. Areas considered were Mooroobool, Clifton Beach, Edmonton and Kamerunga. The preferred site was Kamerunga.

The land was purchased from Lusalda Pty Ltd at a cost of $500,000 ($20,000 per acre) and settlement was requested by 28th February 1991. This seemed achievable, however, there was a six-month delay arising out of an objection relating to the adverse effect the flow of floodwaters might have across this area as a result of any development.

Other setbacks included advice from the Queensland Department of Transport requiring a portion of the school's prime land for the construction of a roundabout to cater for the intersection of Kamerunga Road and Harley Street.

By October 1991, eight months past the agreed settlement date, settlement for the land on which Peace Lutheran College now stands, occurred at 4.44 pm on 4th October 1991.

In the Cairns Post on 6th August 1993, an article appeared stating that a multicultural school, funded by the Lutheran Church, Hope Vale and Wujul Wujal Aboriginal communities would aim to reach out to students in PNG and SE Asia, attempting to address the issue of racial tension and incorporate multiculturalism in a positive manner.

What a task, and yet one that we started, boldly trusting God always.

The first office

The headquarters of the Far North Queensland Lutheran Mission at 30 Upward Street, Cairns, also became the first office of Peace Lutheran College. It was from this hub that founding parents made their first contact with the school. The first 50 enrolment enquiries were made from this office.

Appointment of the founding principal

College Council took the decision to employ a principal, six months prior to the opening date, allowing sufficient opportunity for involvement in the first stage of the building and development of the necessary policies, acceptance of enrolments and interviews and the regular planning for new school development.

The position was advertised in The Lutheran (the official monthly magazine of the Lutheran Church), The Australian and The Courier Mail. From seven applicants, the credentials and subsequent interviews resulted in Mr Michael Gladigau being appointed, unanimously, as the founding principal. In July 1993 he started his mammoth task.

The doors opened

Peace Lutheran College opened its doors on 1st February 1994 amid red mud and tropical rain, but with infectious enthusiasm, a clear sense of direction and rows to hoe.

International Student Handbook Peace Lutheran College CRICOS No 01260E Page 8 of 37 Printed copies are not controlled. Last updated April 2023

The official opening occurred on Sunday, 12th June 1994. Sir William Knox, Chairman of the Association of Independent Schools Queensland performed the official opening ceremony with a crowd of approximately 250 in attendance. Pastor John Vitale, President of the Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District performed the official ceremony, dedicating the school to the glory of God.

Peace Lutheran College today is a testimony to a task that has had many hands to the wheel, developing every aspect of the school into its current niche in the Cairns community. The school provides the Cairns community with a further choice of quality education for children.

Our Mission & Vision

Our Christian Ethos

The Lutheran Church believes, through faith, a person is brought into a living relationship with Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit establishes this grace relationship of love and forgiveness through God’s Word.

The Lutheran Church is a mainstream Christian church which was established in northern Europe at the time of the Reformation in the 16th century.

The influence of Christian worship and prayer is critical to our school and it extends throughout our operations. We don’t just talk about our Christian foundation; we act on it. We seek to treat each other with love and respect because we believe each person is important to God.

Through membership of our community, students and their parents can expect to find themselves sharing in the message of the Christian gospel in worship services and in the daily life of the school community. We understand and accept some may respond to the Christian message in a variety of ways, not always in traditional Christian ways, and we respect and encourage that right.

While we understand and accept that not all will share our Christian faith, we expect our students and their parents or care givers to support and show respect for our Christian beliefs and practices.

We believe our parents and care givers have the prime responsibility for the education of their children and we encourage their involvement in our school life, seeking to always work in respectful partnerships with all.

We seek to operate to these general principles:

Acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ in all areas

Worship with a sense of respect, reverence and holiness

Ensure the spiritual and theological formation of our staff is intentional and planned

Continue to offer a secular academic curriculum informed by Christian perspectives

Continue to pursue excellence in everything we do

Continue to provide effective pastoral care so people (parents and care givers, students and staff) feel comfortable and safe

Continue to foster a sense of pride, ownership, optimism and confidence throughout the school

Part of the Community

Worship Services are held at Trinity Lutheran Church each Sunday beginning at 8.00am and 10.00 a.m. School families are welcome to attend. Please contact the College Administration for details.

Families are valued at Peace. Through involvement with class activities, social activities, Pastoral Care programs and regular communication, we seek to establish strong links between school and home.

Pastoral Care

We pride ourselves on the genuine care and nurture of every child in our care; we are concerned for each individual; providing a safe place for them to learn and grow. Our Pastoral Care Program looks to build life skills and equip students for challenges they may encounter.

Building character, establishing trust, creating resilience

Peace has high expectations of its students’ attitude to their education. Our approach fosters a willingness to learn and opportunities to succeed.

Our Christian mission compels us to support students as they contend with developing a moral framework. Our aim is for them to face moral challenges in a constructive way to ensure they learn how to make responsible choices on their journey to becoming young adults.

• The principles of mutual respect, personal responsibility, acceptance of difference, consideration, forgiveness and reconciliation are practised.

• Students are encouraged to dream big and take risks in their learning.

• Supporting students through moral challenges, teaching them how to make responsible choices.

• Fostering productive, respectful teacher-student relationships so students learn how to engage with their social environment.

• Using a restorative practices approach to resolve conflict.

• Our healthy school culture assists students through social vulnerabilities. Focus areas include:

• Having high expectations of self and others.

• Respectful relationships with caring adults.

• Moral values that enable our young people to discern right from wrong.

• Social boundaries and opportunities for social service. These traits build resilience when our young people face life's challenges.

Pastoral Care Team

College Pastor

Pastor Adam Eime – aeime@plc.qld.edu.au

Is actively involved in the school's pastoral care program and student welfare services. Students regularly attend chapel which is led by the Pastor, however, students are also encouraged to be involved. The College Pastor also serves the boarding community at Peace through church services, bible studies and devotions.

Student Welfare Officer

Mrs. Chantel Macpherson – cmacpherson@plc.qld.edu.au

Provides support, assessment and advice to all students from Prep through to Year 12 in relation to student wellbeing. They work alongside other support staff to provide pastoral care and support for our students and their parents/care providers.

When necessary, upon ascertaining the level of support required for a student, they will connect students and their parents/care providers to external agencies and providers who can offer expert advice to assist students as they overcome emotional and personal struggles.

Heads and Teaching Teams

Our staff carefully monitor each student's progress, addressing individual needs. Our teachers are caring and dedicated to their students, providing them with the advice, direction and support they need along their learning journey.

Supporting our teachers in the pastoral care of our students are our Heads of House and Boarding House Parents for our boarding students.

Beyond the Classroom

Absentee Procedures

Peace expects students to be present at all classes and all designated College functions. This is most important if students are to be able to gain maximum benefit from their time as a Peace College student.

The College Principal is responsible for defining what constitutes satisfactory attendance and will assess attendance issues on a case by case basis. Peace Lutheran College broadly defines satisfactory attendance as attending 8 5% of course contact hours, anything below this, without reasonable explanation (supported by documented evidence) provided to the College by the parent/caregivers is deemed unsatisfactory. Exemptions from regular attendance may be granted by the College Principal for extended absences.

Refer to the Peace Lutheran College Attendance Polic y (Students) for more information.

International Students must also adhere to the Student Progress, Attendance & Course Duration Policy (found in the Policy Section of the Handbook)

If a student is absent, parents/guardians are expected to notify Peace concerning the reason for this absence. Acceptable reasons for non-attendance include the following:

• illness/accident;

• overseas trips (pre-approved by Peace);

• compassionate grounds e.g. funerals;

• selection in State or Regional sporting teams or cultural events; and

• Exceptional circumstances approved by Peace

Extra-curricular

Class camps and excursions play an important role in individual social development, as well as the building of interpersonal relationships between teachers and students, and the creating of a spirit of class 'togetherness'. There is no cost* for students to participate in camps and excursions, enabling all students to be included in these positive and beneficial experiences.

Performing Arts & Instrumental Program

Peace Lutheran College's state-of-the-art Peace Performing Arts Centre (PPAC) facilitates its music, drama and dance students with the latest equipment and performance space.

Officially opened in 2018, this contemporary facility boasts boutique performance space with the latest AV and lighting, recording studio, seven practice rooms and two customised music teaching spaces.

The Peace Performing Arts Centre is a wonderful addition to the school's facilities and is well utilised by its Arts students and teachers.

Sport at Peace

Peace Lutheran College is becoming renowned for its sporting achievements. A wide range of opportunities are available including carnivals, district and regional sport, inter-school sport and College teams.

For a more comprehensive look at the Sporting Program at Peace please visit https://www.plc.qld.edu.au/beyond-theclassroom/sport-at-peace

Parental Involvement

As part of the Christian ethos of Peace Lutheran College, we strongly encourage families of international students to become involved with the Peace community.

Communications either by the Parent Portal, Peace Lutheran College App, email, phone, letter or interview will enable teachers and supporting staff to communicate on a personal level about your child’s progress while studying in Australia. This communication is vital as we value ongoing involvement with the student’s educational and development.

Adjusting to a new environment

• Orientation on prior to and on arrival that is age and culturally appropriate;
