EDITOR’S NOTE

THE SINKING OF THE BAYESIAN

In all of my 46 years in the professional yachting industry I have never known of a disaster such as befell the yacht Bayesian and the ongoing mystery as to why she sank so rapidly, sadly claiming the lives of seven people. It is without doubt an unprecedented event, and one that, in the fullness of time no doubt, will see the vessel raised and a full enquiry held to reveal its cause.

But I have been seeing the glut of global headlines and there are those that are making comments that, at this point, seem totally unfounded and based on supposition. Those made by Giovanni Costantino, Chief Executive of the Italian Sea Group in particular, a company that recently purchased Perini (2023) for a reported 80 million Euro. He is quoted as saying that he blamed the Bayesian’s crew for the ‘incredible mistake’ of not being prepared for the ‘storm’, which had been announced in shipping forecasts.

Costantino remarked that passengers should have been summoned out of their cabins and assembled at a point of safety while the boat was being prepared for the ‘storm’ by pulling up the anchor, closing doors and hatches, lowering the keel to increase stability and other measures.

I can only feel for him and what his company have at stake, they have taken on responsibility for a vessel they did not build that now lays on the ocean floor, and I have no doubt the families of those lost will want answers. But as with many of these tragedies somebody has to be found to blame, in this case he is pointing a finger at the captain and his crew. Not the vessel, which was apparently unsinkable, or the unprecedented weather event that overwhelmed it.

In all of my years I have watched many a ‘water spout’ during daylight, the seas around calm, one can assume that it was a similar event, or possibly, as suggested, a powerful ‘downburst’ that overwhelmed the Bayesian as the yacht was unable to avoid its path.

The crew obviously did not realise that this phenomenon was approaching, if you watch the online shoreside videos of property in Porticello, one second calm and then furniture etc. being flung around, almost instantaneously, even the locals it seems were not prepared. There was an anchor watch and that persons first reaction would have been to alert the crew who would almost instinctively have made it onto the bridge. They then apparently began stowing deck paraphernalia, hence they were very lucky and able to escape as they did in the few seconds available to them, they at no point thought the yacht would sink, and so quickly.

To expect the crew and guests to take the extreme measure of preparing for a storm as above is unreasonable, normally a storm builds slowly giving a period of warning, I have never known it any other way. As for having guests and crew assembled ready to abandon ship, during what were initially quite calm seas as she sheltered in the bay, is a bit fanciful, I ask any captain, have you ever done that and were the other vessels crew and guests in the area dressed in their emergency gear, I very much doubt it.

If you watch the video of the yacht sinking, she went over incredibly quickly, her mast lights ominously failing as she began to list, (what caused this) and having to alert the guests, let alone get them out, would have taken more than those few seconds available to any of the crew, and possibly would have resulted in an even greater loss of life.

There is also the question of hatches being left open before the sinking, she sank so quickly, and the lights on the mast failing (see online video) as she began to heel over, could that be due to flooding of the engine room, there were hull openings at the stern and port aft., close to that compartment, could they have been instrumental in causing the yacht to become so unstable? There are other theories as to what could have caused this, only the enquiry will, we hope, reveal the truth.

I have known Perini for a great many years, their yachts are exceptional, I have sailed on several of them, but what happened that morning was a classic black swan event, totally unexpected by the guests, crew, builders, designers and class societies. To blame the crew for this awful tragedy is a travesty in itself. In hindsight recommendations will be made, rulebooks rewritten, and the industry will take a lesson from it and hopefully we will never see the likes of it again.

THE STERLING LACQUER MANUFACTURING COMPANY

FOUNDED IN 1907

The business traditionally offered general industrial coatings, air-dry, and forcedry finishes of all types for industrial equipment, power tools, farm instruments, and consumer products.

In 1965, a two-component Aliphatic Polyurethane, combined with a Polyester resin was introduced into the U.S. by Farbenfabriken Bayer, from Leverkusen, Germany.

A PROTECTIVE COATING LIKE NO OTHER!

STERLING instantly recognised the possibilities of developing this new product into a material for coatings that could be used in aviation, marine, railroad, and other markets requiring longterm durability and resistance to extreme conditions. STERLING’S initial focus was on the fastgrowing aviation industry, and still today you will find STERLING protection on aircraft being flown by many of the world’s major airlines, including the USAF plus a great range of other high end industrial products.

The company also soon realised that this paint system was perfect for the marine leisure market and created a range of coatings that enabled yacht owners to, for the first time, have their vessel protected with an easy to apply, high gloss finish, in a range of colours and with a far longer life than anything they had experienced before.

In 1985 STERLING acquired an existing marine paint distributor in Belgium and renamed it STERLING Europe N.V., this became, and still is, the main distributor of STERLING products within Europe. A major milestone for the use of this new yacht coating was on the Jon Bannenberg designed, 54m Stefaren, launched in 1986. After the success of this project STERLING’S marine coatings were successfully introduced throughout Europe, mainly into the UK, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, and Greece.

STERLING Linear Polyurethane Coatings, Primers and Fairing Compounds now form the nucleus of a collection of Superyacht coating systems that are used worldwide on steel, stainless steel, aluminium, anodized aluminium, wood, composites and plastics.

STERLING Polyurethane Finishes have evolved through many years of development, testing and refined manufacturing. The result is without doubt, for yachts, one of the most advanced coating systems on the market, one that not only copes with the many surfaces it is designed to protect, but also all that nature can throw at it.

STERLING’S enviable “wet look” finish is the standard for many discriminating Owners and Captains, a finish that can be brushed or sprayed to give equivalent brilliant gloss lustre and mirror-like results. Years of trouble-free, low maintenance service, coupled with excellent repair and touch-up qualities, make STERLING the applicators choice as well, with application forgiveness an added bonus.

Unmistakably recognizable, the STERLING hard finish stays looking excellent far longer than ordinary paint without yellowing, chalking, cracking or fading. STERLING finished yachts will always stand proud, alongside their Owners, wherever in the world they may be.

STERLING has a history of being totally dedicated to research and the development of environmentally and user-friendly coatings that meet the demands of today, as they will in the future.

The STERLING Lacquer Manufacturing Company has been family owned for well over 100 years and its finishes are still created to meet every challenge by a family that care!

Enjoy the diverse selection of activities Norway has to offer

In just a few days, you could visit an aquaculture farm, join a typical Fjord Norwegian family in a private home visit, fish for salmon or trout, undertake Nordic walking through wondrous landscapes, go white-water rafting or even throw yourself off a mountain with a parachute.

If you want to fit in some skiing or glacier climbing you can do that too, even in the middle of summer!

The UNESCO fjords

The Norwegian fjords are natural symbols that encompass the beauty of traditional Norway. The Geirangerfjord is often said to be the most dazzling of the fjords. Visitors are embraced by almost vertical mountainsides that are embellished with impressive waterfalls casting cascades of thundering water. Waterfalls teasing the cliffs with feather-light sheer veils of mist whose mission is to create a never-ending display of changing rainbows to fill you with delight and wonder.

Indulge

in a culinary experience unlike any other Norway is widely known for its excellent quality seafood, and several restaurants along the coast specialize in these delicacies coming from the depths of the sea. Some, located in old fishing villages is the perfect location to combine culture and food where their maritime heritage can be enjoyed to the fullest

If you would like to try your hand at fishing in a more traditional sense, you can take to the sea with a local fisherman – if you are very lucky a Sea Eagle might join you in search of lunch. If you happen to get a catch of your own, some restaurants may even prepare your bounty into a delicious meal, just for you and your friends.

Kings of carbon

Multiplex offers high end solutions for the biggest yachts afloat. Their carbon boarding systems are second to none.

Making things simpler, lighter, easier and more convenient is part of the philosophy of multiplex. Founded in 1986, the creative think tank has developed swiftly but surely to become a global market leader in the field of boarding systems, offering top-quality products based on carbon fibre – gangways, ladders, railings, fender launch systems and awnings in the most exclusive design. As well as being supremely stylish, they have the properties that are needed on all yachts – they are lightweight, easy to handle and stow away and moreover they are absolutely rustproof and highly resistant to environmental influences such as salt water. Behind the scenes, a team of nearly 20 people works tirelessly in the R&D and design departments and, of course, in manufacturing. Custom solutions are not an exception at multiplex, but the standard. Designed and parameterizable with high end software, multiplex products are a guarantee for highest quality and absolute fitting accuracy. No other manufacturer of carbon equipment for superyachts offers this combination of services. This is one of the reasons why multiplex is considered the world market leader in this segment. Among other things, multiplex has equipped 80 of the world‘s 100 largest motor yachts to date and supply all the major shipyards around the globe.

MULTIFLAP

The multiflap is light, stable and resistant to deformation. It is also weatherproof, which means that neither wind nor seawater can cause any harm. With a weight of 4.4 kg per metre and a quick, simple fixing system, it can be mounted and dismounted by a single person. The practical hinge system keeps storage space to a minimum.

Bestseller: the sun awning system, seen here on a 87 metre yacht, is one of multiplex‘ specialities.

MULTIGUARD

SUN AWNING SYSTEM

Easy installation and less weight combined with elegant design let the sun awning system become a product which enjoys great popularity. Each sail is individually hand-made so it will suit perfectly the vessel’s outline. Miscellaneous paintings of the poles, several types of sailcloth, loud speakers and lights can personalize the systems according to taste.

The multiguard system is a railing made from pure carbon fibre, designed and shaped according to a client’s individual requirements. Despite its low weight the multiguard system can withstand a lateral pressure of up to 100 kilos and has been certified by Lloyds Register. As is standard with multiplex, the system is available in a free choice of colours with worldwide service.

MULTISTAIR

MULTIFENDER

Based on the multifender modular component system, all multifender systems are produced according to individual requirements. This means that we tailor the multifender to all imaginable conditions so that it can be used in absolutely every location. With responsible utilization, the multifenders are basically designed for vessels weighing up to 12 tons.

The multistair can be used for access over the side, or over the stern, directly into the cockpit. It can be swung 90 degrees from a fully horizontal to a fully vertical position, with all steps automatically aligning in parallel with the surface of the sea. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100% corrosion resistance.

MULTILADDER

The multiplex multiladder system is based on the multiplex typical carbon fibre compound construction system. The lightness of this ladder construction enables an easy and quick assembly and dismantling. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100 % corrosion resistance. Multiplex swim ladders are also characterised by optimum ergonomic features and need less space for stowage.

With four decades fully immersed in the maritime industry in naval-military, super-yacht operation, refit-and-repair, yacht-management, charter, yachttechnology, and yacht brokerage, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca brings to the maritime industry a mature and acute vision and focus.

Initially trading under the Just World Leisure banner in the early 2000s – providing yacht-charter, hospitality, and brokerage services – Just & Co has recently concentrated more specifically on technological innovations in both yacht communications and internet-at-sea requirements, and on the research-and-development and promotion of new naval architecture hull-form applications.

Recognising the limited evolution of hull-design concepts over the decades – and resulting lack of ‘sea-comfort’ in smaller boats - a collaboration and partnership was formed during the past 20 years with the Icelandic-based team behind the invention of the revolutionary ‘ÖK Hull Technology’ –the company RAFNAR ehf. This has in recent years lead to the expansion of the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, which Just & Co represents from Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

The revolutionary RAFNAR boats and their unusual ‘ÖK Hull’ provide the ability to travel long distances at sea in unique comfort in ‘displacement mode’, at high speed; with little fatigue and stress encountered for guests, crew, or the actual boat. Prime importance is placed upon ‘Keeping Comfort at Sea’, durability, reliability, and safety – allowing a softer and more efficient ride and experience at sea, and a very significant decrease in uncomfortable ‘bounce-and-slam’.

For inquiries and sales, contact ‘Just & Co / RAFNAR Spain’, Palma de Mallorca.
