SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE EDITION 5
A Tribute To a Friend
I recently travelled to Mallorca to attend a memorial evening dedicated to a late and great legendary friend of mine and many others around the world, Captain Phil Wade. It took place at the Can Feliu Country Estate, one of his favourite venues, and was, without doubt, a gathering of many renowned characters from the global sailing community, all set on giving Phil a send-off that he would appreciate and was in keeping with his lifestyle. If he was looking down he would have smiled at the story’s told, times re-lived and the tributes paid during those emotional hours. He passed away in Cape Town, quite suddenly, from a heart attack on November 18th last year at the age of 78 when working in his garden, his wonderful wife Anne by his side.
I had known Phil for many years, I first met him in 2007 at the Monaco Yacht Show when Anne introduced us, ‘Would you like to do Phils life story in your magazine.’ I was in the habit of writing about the great characters in our industry at the time, ‘Why’, ‘Well Phil did put a merchant ship on the rocks on the African coast when he was 17 years old.’ That caught my attention and then when in Antigua at the ACYM several months later I sat and took down what was an unbelievable story of one man’s life and his adventures criss-crossing the five oceans of the world on all manner of sailing yachts.
He was eventually found not guilty of having been at fault on the merchant vessel, even though he had fallen asleep when in charge on watch. At the enquiry it was discovered that he had been made to work excessive hours and his companion on the bridge at the time had left it too late to waken him when realising they were in danger.
He then went on to cover several jobs, all marine related, some ashore, some not. But he had begun to develop a special love and understanding of the oceans, and then, as happens in life, especially to those with an overly adventurous spirit, he found himself on sailing yachts undertaking incredible journeys with partners that just seemed to believe in his invincibility. He found ways of making sailing pay, that you or I would never bestow upon those that we took to sea with us. Realising that fish were often all around him and free, and his love of throwing a line over the stern, led to him to only taking just enough food from ashore to get him through fish free areas, his crew ate fish, and more fish, but it allowed him to profit from deliveries, his crew were rarely if ever paid, they would go with him for the experience and to learn from a master of his craft.
But as he travelled, he amassed friends from around the world, he did not suffer fools, his friends were true. He then became involved in round the world racing, an extreme sport at which he excelled, and these events in themselves brought him the adventures and challenges that he craved.
The one event of course that he never tired of reliving was when Simon Le Bon's Maxi yacht Drum capsized off the British coast in 1985. Duran Durans singer, and yacht owner, Simon Le Bon, was inside along with 11 others, one being Phil. 12 others were either on deck when she went over in just seconds, or managed to get out and sit on the upturned hull as rescuers quickly arrived. The incident, when the keel dropped off, had luckily been witnessed and reported from the shore. Eventually all 24 crew were rescued, one from the toilet who managed to get out minus his underpants etc. another found trapped inside with only his nose still above water, but they survived.
These stories and many more were told of his life that evening. Phil believed in giving back, he helped so many to begin a career at sea. I know several personally that owe their careers to Phil. He also helped so many young people from the tough areas of his home country, South Africa, that showed potential as seafarers. He founded, alongside Anthony Just, the Marine Inspirations charity that helped fund these youngsters and their trips to experience yachting. He also of course was well known for his final years when a professional sail yacht Captain running the yacht Timoneer that would feature at many Superyacht racing events. The owners of that vessel loved him, and literally went where Phil wanted to venture, he had the perfect job, and when they both had passed away, Phil hung up his professional sailing boots.
He indeed was a special man, in fact a ‘Damn Fine Splendid’ one to quote his own words! He lived in the fast lane, and as he wished, he died in the fast lane! There will never be another like him, but maybe we should all learn from his generosity, unique lifestyle and the time that he unselfishly gave to helping others.
RIP Phil.

DR. KHALED SHERIF
ASSISTANT MINISTER OF TOURISM AND ANTIQUITIES – EGYPT
Egypt is a civilization that stretches back for several thousands of years, a fact that is known to everyone throughout the world. In recent years we, as a nation, have come to realize the strong potential for Egypt as a yachting destination.
In that context we have started working with Colin Squire – Publisher of this magazine – to develop and implement a promotional plan targeting the yachting community and with a special focus given to Superyachts, our aim is to talk about, and to showcase, what we have done and are doing in Egypt to become attractive to this community.
Over the last couple of years, and benefitting from unprecedented support from our president Abdel Fattah ElSissi, the government of Egypt has introduced many new activities and simplified regulations that will improve the visiting yachtsman’s experience.
Our Ministry of Transport, being in charge of enhancing the procedural environment for visiting yachts, has introduced a unified portal for visiting yacht registration: www.mts.gov. eg/en/ where approvals are received within 30 minutes. Visiting yacht tourists also now get an extended Visa that lasts for three months.
Yachts can register their arrival within Egyptian waters through several ports on the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts that will enable them to then enjoy a stay in more than 10 marinas. Those marinas have access to the most attractive archaeological sites and museums that exist anywhere else in Egypt, making a cruise in Egyptian waters an adventure like no other.
We look forward to welcoming Superyachts to our country with enthusiastic owner’s guests and crew onboard and once here we have no doubt they will experience the cruise of a lifetime.

MAHROUSSA
‘Guarded by God’s Blessing’

Thereare times in your life, and only a very few, when an announcement is made that it is difficult to comprehend, ‘Just to let you know that permission has been granted for you to visit the Presidential Yacht Mahroussa on the last day of your tour of Egypt.’ Our host, Dr Khaled Sherif, Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, in charge of Yachting Tourism, stood in front of us with a huge smile on his face, he had made what we thought was impossible – possible. A visit to a legendary Egyptian vessel that very few in our industry ever new existed, let alone had visited or seen.
We left our hotel in Cairo very early on a warm Tuesday morning and headed by coach to Alexandria, knowing that the honour of visiting this Royal Yacht from Victorian times, was indeed special. There were 12 guests with me on the tour, all from the Superyacht industry within Europe. Our adventure throughout Egypt was hosted by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of the Egyptian Government, and the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Bureau who were represented by Dr Khaled Sherif and myself. We had been given access to every Egyptian experience that one could imagine possible in this incredible country during the previous days, and more can be discovered about these bucket list visits and of those that took part towards the back of this magazine. But to visit Mahroussa (meaning Guarded by God’s Blessing) was, to me, and possibly others in our

small group, an honour greater than visiting all of the other amazing sites we had experienced during the previous seven days. We were literally allowed to walk in the footsteps of great leaders from the past and present, you could sense them all around, it was indeed an incredible honour.
We headed towards Alexandria for an 11am appointment with what is the oldest Superyacht, by, to my knowledge, over half a century, in the world. The last time she went on an official cruise was in August of 2015 when she carried the Egyptian president, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his guests, to become the first official ship to sail through the newly constructed, 35km section of the 164km Suez Canal, a section that would double the daily capacity of vessels passing between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. She also led the original inauguration fleet of vessels through the canal way back in 1869, just a few years after her launch.
She still puts to sea every three months or so to ensure all is in working order as she awaits a call to go and do her Presidential duty again and to represent her country one more time.
159 years of maritime and Egyptian history surrounds this remarkable vessel, a vessel that is still in operational condition and lovingly cared for by the Egyptian Navy. Her home is in Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, where she first arrived back in 1865. Her history is documented by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a major library and culture centre based in Alexandria and from where most of the history for Mahroussa is held and to who I offer thanks.
We arrived on time and then we passed by an immense building and there she sat, port side to the dock. She had been decked out in the colours of the Egyptian national flag especially for us. Several officers and staff stood by in full uniform to greet and escort us. The vessel is cared for by a crew of 50 sailors at all times when in port, this can increase to well over 100 when she heads to sea.

After being greeted we were invited onboard, first being treated to tea and biscuits and a short historical movie. We were then taken throughout the vessel, she has been kept in almost original condition where possible, and being originally built for the Viceroy of Egypt the many state rooms we visited were named for Kings or Queens. Every room had its own distinct design, many expressing the history of the country itself, and that tour, and seeing those rooms and what they contained, was certainly something none of us will ever forget!
Known to be one of the great ages of yachting, the mid-Victorian era saw the construction of many wonderful vessels for the Kings and Queens of the superpowers of the time as power took over from centuries of sail. Power, (steam), combined with the original paddle, used before and after the propeller was invented around 1850, allowed a vessel to travel in a straight line and thus not to be dependent on fickle winds that could often add hours, if not days to a journey.
Mahroussa was launched from the Samuda Brothers construction yard in London in 1865 after a two-year build period as a paddle steamer of 125m. She was given a set of turbines and three propellers much later in 1905 when back in the U.K. (Glasgow) for a refit. She had been launched and designed to use coal as fuel until a refit in 1919 (Portsmouth) when she was converted to diesel. During a further modification in La Spezia, Italy in 1949, she was improved with two steam turbines, offering 7500 hp, and twin propellers. Her iron hull has been extended on two occasions, 12.5m (London UK 1872), and by 8m in 1919 (Portsmouth, UK) to give her a final length of 145.72m and a displacement of 4,760 tons. Her beautiful riveted hull has stood the test of time and gives full statement to her age. She does not have air conditioning and many other items that would be found on a modern yacht, but surprisingly she has lifts throughout the vessel.
Her final dimensions also give statement to her global Superyacht ranking, she held the title of the world’s longest yacht until 1984, when she was dethroned by the Prince Abdulaziz at 147.01m, and due to the plethora of these extreme vessels being built since, she now ranks an impressive No. 11.
The guests onboard Mahroussa.

The Yacht has five deck levels: (Only a few areas are mentioned below.)
• 1st. Engine room, and fuel tanks, storage, crew accommodation.
• 2nd. Main Deck Level includes the living rooms, kitchens, storage, the Winter Suite and the Pharaonic Hall, plus the Princes and Princesses suites.
• 3rd. This contains the anchoring equipment, load cranes and the main Dining and Smoking rooms.
• 4th. Contains the artillery, she carries eight Armstrong Cannons for use as decoration and defence should she ever be attacked. The Winter and Summer Gardens, the Summer Suite and the Blue Room.
• 5th. This level is occupied by the Esplanade and the Lifeboats. The yacht has four elevators including one solely for the Royal Suite. It also includes the garage, used to house His Majesty’s red car.
During her lifetime she has of course played host to many renowned celebrities and been the platform for some remarkable events.
She was built for the Khedive Ismail (Viceroy of Egypt) and has passed since to the many rulers of the country and has hosted onboard, alongside all of Egypt’s great leaders, including quite recently, President Gamel Abdel Nassar, President Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat, President Mubarak and of course as mentioned President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the likes of Empress Eugenie, Franz Joseph 1, Prince Frederic of Germany, King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, King Paul of Greece, President Tito, President Khrushchev, President Abd El-Salem Aref of Iraq, President Ahmed Ben Bella and Sultan Qaboos of Oman, US First Lady Betty Ford and many others.
The yacht underwent a name change on the 18th July 1956 by a presidential decree issued by President Gamal Abdel Nasser, from Mahroussa to Horria (Freedom) after the 1952 revolution. This was reversed by President Mubarak on 10th. September 2000 when she retained her original name of Mahroussa.
She has undertaken many historic journeys, some during war time to assist soldiers and the Navy itself, but her longest ever trip was to the USA in 1976 to

partake in the United States Bicentennial celebrations, a return journey, including the many ports she visited, of around 12,700 miles.
She has onboard probably the world’s oldest operating piano, one of the very first and built in Stuttgart Germany, given as a present by the Empress Eugenie of France, the wife of Napoleon III, in 1869 to the yacht. It remains onboard in working order to this day. The piano alone tells the tale of the many treasures that remain intact onboard Mahroussa. She is now living in her third century and the gifts that have been bestowed upon her are cared for, quite rightly, as national treasures and her remarkable main dining room table, that can seat 30 diners, is made from just one solid piece of wood, lowered into place through a specially designed deckhead.
Mahroussa is to be seen as another wonderful jewel to be treasured by the people of Egypt. Having been on board this remarkable vessel leaves me, and from discussions afterwards, those who came with me, quite humbled. Even though we were just another speck to be added to her remarkable history, recorded by the photographers that escorted us, we can all say that we are a part of a unique few, and who knows where she will cruise to next, if you see her give a wave from us, a remarkable old lady indeed!

Milestones of Our Journey
2024, we celebrate 20 years of ALEXSEAL Ya t oats t s a ecellet te to tae a loo bac at our sso, the frst steps, ad what les ahead
“It’s about time.” Under this slogan, we started at Mankiewicz in March 2004 as an global paint manufacturer to help shape the market for high-end yacht coatings. In the more than 125-year history of Mankiewicz, a few products already have been used in boatbuilding over the decades. At the beginning of the 2000s, there was a comprehensive vision: a complete portfolio under the name ‘ALEXSEAL Yacht Coatings’ was to be launched. Applicable from the first primer coat to the final topcoat. Thomas Schultz, Global Sales Director at ALEXSEAL, has been on board from the beginning and looks back on the course already taken. And what lies ahead in the coming years.

“Developing and applying yacht paints is considered one of the fine arts in the coatings industry. There are an incredible number of industries where the highest demands are placed on the finish; however, the surfaces to be painted are rarely as large and demanding as on a superyacht,” says Thomas. “In car and aircraft painting, a comparably good finish is essential, although the design of a car or aircraft is much more forgiving in terms of the visual appearance of the finished surface.”
Eeer a a
This is because many vehicles only very rarely have large, completely flat surfaces. For example, the fuselage of an airplane is enormous and is painted by several painters at the same time. But it is still round, and the passengers ‘only’ expect an extremely high-gloss, not a mirror-like surface. “Especially on large yachts, we have comparably huge but almost flat surfaces on the hull. This is an extreme challenge, even for professional painters. If the performance of the topcoat is not at 100%, you cannot achieve a mirror-like surface appearance. Suppose the underlying primer or fairing compound layers are not 100% perfect. In that case, you can also see this immediately through the topcoat,” says Thomas, summarizing only one of the challenges for yacht paints and the paint crews.
Anyone who has ever painted a high-gloss yacht can confirm this and know that it is important to match and coordinate products for each layer to achieve a perfect surface finish. To develop and produce yacht coatings at the highest level, you must know how to do your homework right from the beginning. Suppose you look at all five layers of a yacht coating. In that case, you come up with a vast bundle of functional and optical properties that must be fulfilled: DOI and UV resistance are just the tip of the requirements iceberg, extending deep into adhesion, sandability and polishability. “Painting conditions vary significantly worldwide and also play a crucial role. Almost everything is possible, from construction site environments to clean rooms and from cold, dry environments to warm, humid ones. The coating portfolio must be able to map all of this with suitable systems.”
© Michael Kurtz PhotographyChallenges: Sought, found, solved
“At the beginning, it was a very complex and exciting challenge to enter this market and put together a suitable portfolio,” recalls the yacht expert. “But what made life much easier for us was the wealth of experience that we, as the ALEXSEAL team at the company Mankiewicz, could draw on. There have been some synergies in terms of development, and we have gained experience with high-gloss and robust surfaces over time since our foundation in 1895 as a paint manufacturer.”
Mankiewicz’s markets and product lines show clear parallels. The global coating manufacturer is firmly anchored in the aviation industry, which has taken the exterior painting of aircraft to a new level with innovative coating systems. The rail sector is also concerned with large exterior surfaces with visually and functionally highly sophisticated finishes.
“Of course, this was and still is worth its weight in gold for developing our yacht portfolio. Right from the start, we had an experienced team and colleagues who could quickly adapt to the yacht industry on the laboratory side, in application technology and production,” says Thomas.
Markets ahead

With such a background, it was easier for the young ALEXSEAL team to get a foot in the door with shipyards and yacht painters. “Nevertheless, despite the many advantages, it was difficult to win the first major projects at the beginning,” explains the ALEXSEAL pioneer. “Confidence in our set-up is one thing, but experience with the right paint job in the dock is another. We first had to earn our spurs.”
In 2004, ALEXSEAL was brought to market first in Australia and the United States. After yacht painters and shipyards had noticed the first results, the first inquiries came from Europe, especially the Netherlands, in the second year. And in America, demand continued to grow steadily. Already in 2006 and 2007, many yachts were applying ALEXSEAL’s Polyurethane Premium Topcoat 501, including the largest dark blue private yacht in the world at that time.
The story and the level of awareness naturally continued to develop over the following years. More and more projects came along, and they got bigger and bigger. So big and prominent that most of them can no longer be named. In 2023, almost 40 percent of the world’s 100 largest yachts were coated with ALEXSEAL systems. For more than one decade, ALEXSEAL has been a solid and still strong growing player in the yacht coatings market.

Sailing On The Seven Seas
Projects are painted worldwide nowadays. While the focus in Europe is primarily on the construction and refit of superyachts, there are sportfish yachts in the USA and a strong DIY community with smaller boats. In Asia increasingly high-quality and larger new builds have emerged in recent years. The larger the paint jobs, the more critical it is for yacht painters to receive close and personal support from the paint manufacturer. Trust in partnership and specialist knowledge is integral to a perfect finish.
“To do justice to this, a global network of experts is essential for a paint manufacturer,” says Thomas, looking at ALEXSEAL’s setup. “With our global distributor network, we are always quickly on-site for our customers. This ensures fast and reliable technical support.” Also the Mankiewicz locations in Charleston, SC (USA), Hamburg (Germany), Gyancourt (France), Leicester (UK), Singapore, and Shanghai (China) are vital support hotspots.
However, ALEXSEAL is interested in close cooperation and in personal relationships. “One of our highest stand-ards is that we work with the same experts in the local markets for many years. The closer the relationship and the trust on both sides, the more effective and targeted the advice and joint project support. And you can see that in the final surface result,” says Thomas about the ALEXSEAL philosophy.
New Horizons
If you ask Thomas where the journey in coatings for yachts is heading, you get a clear answer. “When we started twenty years ago, a classic PU topcoat like our Premium Topcoat 501 was the established system. Then, we introduced a new approach to the market with our BaseCoat / ClearCoat system. That is a system with which Mankiewicz has already revolutionized the aviation industry.”
It offers outstanding values for a wide range of painting parameters but should be applied by experienced painting crews to achieve the best possible result. “The final, additional layer in particular – the clearcoat – gives the finish particularly high durability, UV resistance, and visual depth. This is the direction we consider significant for the coming years.”
However, the yacht market is not just a sea of superyachts. The sport and leisure segment and medium-sized luxury yachts also make up a large part of the market. “Today, we are very proud that we have the right answer for different requests and painting conditions with our Premium Topcoat 501, Acrylic Topcoat X, and High Solid BaseCoat/ClearCoat system. And we look forward to every new challenge that makes our portfolio even broader, more durable, and richer in effect and color. A big thank you to everyone who has challenged, accompanied, and trusted us over the last 20 years.”
Here’s to the next 20 years, and always a shiny, perfect finish on the keel.

DEUTSCHE YACHTEN - A SUPERYACHT NETWORK, MADE IN GERMANY
THE STERLING LACQUER MANUFACTURING COMPANY

THE ORIGINS OF STERLING
The entity that would evolve to be the STERLING Lacquer Manufacturing Company was founded in 1907 as the Morris Mayer Company before becoming the Mitchell Mayer Company when brothers Leo J. Mitchell, born 1895, and John W. Mitchell, born 1888, joined the company. During 1937 it again changed name to the STERLING Lacquer Manufacturing Company, reflecting its entry into the development and production of Nitrocellulose lacquer coatings. In 1937, STERLING moved to a location in the central part of St. Louis, Missouri, and remained there until 1961 before another move to Brannon Avenue, its current location, in the southwestern part of the city. Leo’s uncle, Leo, died unexpectedly in 1945, after which John became the president of the company.
STERLING’S CURRENT PRESIDENT
STERLING’S current president, Leo V. Mitchell, worked in the plant at an early age, on Saturdays, school holidays and during summer vacations, but he had always held an ambition to fly and was accepted into the U.S. Naval Aviation Flight program in Pensacola, Florida, in July 1955. After completing two years of study at St. Louis University, Leo spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Navy pilot, during which time (1958) his father died. He was in a squadron which flew a P2V land-based, long-range patrol aircraft built by the Lockheed Aircraft company. After four years of active duty, Leo returned to St. Louis University to complete his studies and remained in the Naval Reserves for an additional 10 years. Leo began working at STERLING part-time while completing his studies in December 1961. Upon graduation, he began working full-time in various capacities, including laboratory, manufacturing, purchasing, and sales. In 1968 he became the president of STERLING Lacquer Manufacturing Company and has continued in that capacity to this day. The business traditionally offered general industrial coatings, air-dry, and force-dry finishes of all types for industrial equipment, power tools, farm instruments, and consumer products.
In 1965, a two-component Aliphatic Polyurethane, combined with a Polyester resin was introduced into the U.S. by a large German firm, Farbenfabriken Bayer, from Leverkusen.
ENTRY INTO THE AIRCRAFT INDUSTRY
STERLING was one of only a very few early paint manufacturers to see the possibilities for highquality, durable aircraft and marine coatings that could withstand all types of environmental issues. They also recognized early that these were ideal raw materials for aviation, marine, railroad, and other markets needing long-term durability and resistance to all types of weather and chemicals
STERLING decided to pursue the aircraft market first, as the company had a big interest in aviation. Trans World Airlines (TWA) were the first major airline to test Sterling’s material and after a sixmonth test on a Boeing 727, on January 1, 1966, was accepted as the supplier for the exterior coating systems on TWA aircraft. Subsequently, Sterling obtained contracts to supply amongst others, Delta, United Airlines, and Eastern Airlines. The company also introduced these types of high-performance coatings into the US and Canadian railroad industry for use on locomotives and cabooses. In its aerospace coatings market STERLING also supplies support coatings for aircraft manufacturers such
as Lockheed, Boeing, Beech, and Cessna, plus companies in a number of other countries including Europe and the far East. STERLING also entered the pleasure marine market in the U.S. and Europe.
In 1985, STERLING acquired a marine distributor, CP Systems, located in Boom, Belgium. At that time, the name was changed to STERLING Europe N.V. STERLING became interested in CP Systems because of their highly qualified team which had been marketing, distributing, and offering technical advice for the application of these new, high-performance polyurethane coatings to their clients.
STERLING has grown to specialise in aircraft, marine, and exterior coatings for structures where extreme resistance to weather and chemicals is critical. STERLING has qualified its primers and polyurethane topcoats to meet U.S. Military specifications for aircraft use.
STERLING AND YACHTS
The first major yacht project in Europe that used STERLING products was the 54-metre Motor Yacht Stefaren, (now Maridome) when under construction in 1986 in Lowestoft, England. After the successful completion of that build, STERLING’S marine coatings were successfully introduced throughout Europe, mainly into the UK, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, and Greece.
STERLING Linear Polyurethane Coatings, Primers and Fairing Compounds form the nucleus of a set of superyacht coating systems that are used worldwide and need to cope with the many diverse construction materials now being used in yacht building. These include steel, aluminium, wood, composites, plastics and even stainless steel and anodized aluminium.
STERLING Polyurethane Finishes are state-of-the-art coatings for marine, aviation and industrial applications that have evolved through many years of development, testing and refined manufacturing. The result is without doubt, for yachts, one of the most advanced coating systems on the market, one that not only copes with the many surfaces it is designed to protect, but also all that nature can throw at it as the vessel cruises the world’s oceans.
STERLING’S enviable “wet look” finish is the standard for many discriminating owners and captains, a finish that can be brushed or sprayed to give equivalent mirror-like results. Years of trouble-free, low maintenance service, coupled with excellent repair and touchup qualities, make STERLING the applicators choice as well, with application forgiveness an added bonus.

RELIABLE PROTECTION AGAINST LIGHTNING STRIKES

AVOID DIRECT LIGHTNING STRIKES ON YOUR YACHT!

For several years now, the damages caused by lightning strikes on yachts have been increasing. Reported incidents, up to and including total losses, have tripled and experts expect the numbers to continue to rise.
ELNA GmbH, based near Hamburg, o ers a special lightning protection system that certain large yacht owners have already installed on the masts of their vessels. The so-called Marine DDCE has been delivered and installed on several yachts from Baltic, Nautor Swan,
YYachts, Solaris and Southern Wind.
The Marine DDCE system, manufactured by Dinnteco in Spain and distributed exclusively by ELNA in Europe, uses the patented system to prevent the occurrence of lightning within a protection radius of up to 100 metres.
This means that the so-called upward streamer, which is necessary for the main discharge, can no longer occur. This reliably prevents direct lightning strikes on the yacht to be protected. The unit only requires su cient earthing;

A lightning strike to a yacht is no pleasure and, above all, dangerous – besides the damage, owners have to cope with the lost season, the loss of charter income and, of course, a lasting feeling of insecurity. ELNA GmbH now o ers a remedy with the Marine DDCE from Dinnteco.
no power supply is necessary. Starting at 2.45 kilograms, the device, made of stainless steel, can be easily installed on sailing yachts, catamarans or motor yachts.
Yachts need special protection
Lightning arrestors are a working principle to prevent significant damage to buildings. The structural conditions on yachts and the small distances between possible surge arrestors and the interior make it almost impossible to protect electronics on yachts. And it is

the electronics that account for most of the damage today. In addition, lightning damage to masts, especially carbon masts, can be significant. The solution is the DDCE lightning protection system, which prevents direct lightning strikes to the protected structure. The system protects the crew from direct lightning strikes and also from strong electromagnetic fields generated in the vicinity of the lightning strike.

„This is the first time that an e ective solution has been developed for lightning protection on yachts,“ says Leif Schick, Managing Director of ELNA. „The DDCE system has already been protecting buildings for many years with amazing results. With the Marine DDCE, we can now o er a device explicitly designed for the requirements and harsh conditions at sea.“ Pantaenius‘ yacht insurance also welcmes the new o ering.

HOW DOES THE DDCE WORK?
„Incidents of lightning strikes on yachts have increased sharply in recent years,“ knows Holger Flindt, Head of Claims at Pantaenius. „Not always, but very often, a direct or indirect lightning strike means a considerable danger for people and material. In such a case, a properly installed lightning protection system such as the DDCE system not only protects against damage and injury but also against any excess in the event of a claim.“

During a thunderstorm, a potential difference is created between the clouds, usually negatively charged in a thunderstorm, and the positively charged earth. At specific points, this can lead to an increase in charge concentrations. Lightning finally discharges between clouds and the earth in these strong electrical voltage fields. In the process, negative charge carriers first migrate towards the ground in the so-called conductive lightning and prepare an ionised channel through which the current can finally flow. At the same time, the ground under the thunderstorm becomes positively charged. The electric field is particularly large at exposed locations such as church steeples - the masts of sailing yachts, or equipment carriers of motor yachts. From such places, a positive charge - also called an upward streamer – can go towards the leading lightning and close the lightning channel so that the main discharge can follow. This usually consists of several individual discharges and can reach a current strength of 100,000 amperes. The Marine DDCE compensates the positive and negative charges in a controlled manner and drains them through the water. The balanced electrical voltage field avoids the upward streamer.

ELNA GMBH
ELNA is a family-owned company operating worldwide; its origins date back to 1952. In 2017, the company‘s management passed into the hands of the third generation, Leif Schick. At the company‘s headquarters near Hamburg, radio antennas are manufactured for the navy and airports; as a wholesaler and system integrator, ELNA is active in commercial and leisure shipping and supplies equipment in the core segments of communication, electrics and safety. Dinnteco‘s lightning protection products have been part of the portfolio since 2020; ELNA is the Spanish manufacturer‘s exclusive European sales partner. WWW.ELNA.DE WWW.DINNTECO.COM

Leaders for life
How HELM and leadership training can aid crew resilience and retention

For young people looking to see the world and make their maritime careers, there’s a glamour attached to the superyacht industry that’s easy to understand. Cruising around the Mediterranean or the bays of south-east Asia, seeking the sun and new experiences and basking in the reflected glamour and lifestyles of the owners, it’s work with a perk or two.
But the glamour that draws in the young, who make up the majority of superyacht crew and officers, poses some challenges for operators and the wider industry. Crew work is hard work, whether you’re serving on a container ship or a luxury yacht. Aboard a superyacht, however, the disconnect between appearance and reality – between the effortless glamour of the owner lifestyle and the hard graft behind the scenes –can be particularly stark.
For officers, particularly, the unpredictable needs of owners and their guests can create a high-pressure environment that demands flexibility, resilience, leadership and a broad understanding of all aspects of superyacht life, from hospitality to maritime law to more traditional officers’ roles. Owners’ high expectations can create a stressful working environment – leading officers to feel they need to be ‘always on’, not to mention capable to deal with any and all situations, even those outside their training or skillset.
So how can yacht operators and independent owners address the resulting challenges with retaining high-quality crew and officers –ensuring owners receive the world-class service they expect?
One solution lies in better training – but training focused on softer skills such as leadership, empathy, good management and communication, and creating an inclusive environment that welcomes culturally diverse crew, to complement more technical or maritime-specific skills.
Management-level Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) training such as offered at Warsash provides officers and crew with a better understanding of their own strengths as a leader, and can improve their effectiveness both as an individual and as part of a team.
Effective HELM (M) training allows officers to do more than control the operation of the vessel, but to provide effective and compassionate management of everyone on board, from deck crew to hospitality to engineering. They can learn to critically assess the situation and adapt their approach according to the needs of the moment and the individuals involved – whether that’s the owners or a member of crew.
It can also help officers create an environment on board which encourages and supports crew, allowing them to identify and resolve potential issues before they become a problem. This kind of effective leadership can also increase loyalty and resilience among crew, improving retention and enabling them to better adapt to changes outside their control – everything from negative interactions with guests or owners to logistical complications arising from changes to itinerary or equipment breakdown.
Good HELM (M) training will enable better teamwork and communication, as well as imparting an understanding of the factors underlying senior decision making – enabling a more informed and effective crew who understand why, and not just what, they’re being asked to do.
That understanding can be critical, both in improving morale and individual wellbeing, and also in aiding progression among crew and officers – offering quality staff not just a glimpse of their future, but also the day-to-day tools they need to secure progression for themselves.
Better motivated, better equipped, and better at working with and understanding their peers, crew who have taken their HELM (M) training to heart are the backbone of a working yacht, proving their worth many times over. And the environments they create aboard yachts are inherently safer and more welcoming – bringing back some of that glamour that attracted young people in the first place, and giving crew the support and the space they need to flourish.

UNDERWATER LIGHTS (LTD.)
THE 33 YEAR LEGACY
Underwater Lights Ltd. were established in 1991 and have since been a pioneering force in the underwater lighting industry, delivering excellence for over three decades. Their commitment to longevity and customer satisfaction has set them apart from competitors as they have continued to support and upgrade products dating back to the original and first underwater light – the Bulleyt.
One key aspect that distinguishes them is a dedication in upgrading vessels from an original installation. As technology has evolved, so has their product base and service. Underwater Lights Ltd. are well-versed in retrofitting competitor’s systems also, to keep pace with advancements in the marine industry. Whether you own a vintage boat or a modern vessel they can ensure that your lighting setup remains not only functional, but also at the cutting edge of innovation, and this can be done using existing fittings whilst the boat is still in the water.
What sets them apart further is a comprehensive stock of all parts necessary for maintenance. Minimising downtime for boat owners is an important factor in their thinking which allows them to swiftly address any issues that may arise and ensure that a clients underwater lighting system operates at peak performance at all times.
In an industry where planned obsolescence has become commonplace, Underwater Lights Ltd. stand firm against the tide. Many competitors choose to discontinue their lights within a mere ten years, compelling customers to upgrade to newer and more expensive models. This practice not only adds financial strain, but also contributes to environmental waste. Underwater Lights Ltd. take a different approach, they can upgrade your existing units to LED with ease, or if your metal halide units are still operating, they have in stock glass, gaskets and O-Rings etc. from as far back as 1991 that can allow your lights to be serviced.

Commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction means that they do not force unnecessary upgrades onto clients. By supporting and upgrading products they can enable boat owners to enjoy the benefits of an initial investment for years to come, they also, where possible, provide repair services for damaged lights that are out of warranty.
Trusting with Underwater Lights Ltd. means choosing reliability, and a legacy of over 33 years in the industry is a testament to dedication and resilience. As a valued customer, you won’t have to worry about being caught out, as many are, by competitors discontinuing lights within a decade.
With a commitment to customer satisfaction that extends beyond just the purchase of their products, ongoing support ensures that any issues or concerns are
promptly addressed by a team of dedicated personnel that are intent on fostering lasting relationships with clients, built on a foundation of trust, transparency, and exceptional service.
Their team are a great asset, many of whom have been part of the company for an impressive 20 years. This longevity not only reflects true commitment but also signifies the wealth of knowledge and expertise held within the company. With two decades of industry experience, these staff have developed an unparalleled understanding of underwater lighting technology and customer needs.
On many occasions they have been approached by Yards, Captains and Engineers seeking an innovative solution to replace failed or discontinued competitors’ underwater lights. The team are excited to embark on the challenge of designing a cutting-edge replacement that not only meets but exceeds customer expectations. When crew have received exceptional service from them on previous vessels, where they have not had to service or replace the lights, they know that by contacting Underwater Lights Ltd. when looking for an alternative light they receive a replacement that will last.

Current competitor refits have included a 92m and 101m Feadship, as well as upgrading many of their own original underwater lights to LED. One significant boat being MY Atlantide who had the Original Bulleyt with metal halide lamps installed many years ago. She upgraded to the QTLED using the existing weldins and new glass.
Underwater Lights Ltd. are also on the brink of unveiling a new, cutting-edge manufacturing and production facility. This state-of-the-art building, nearing completion, represents a significant leap forward in the company’s commitment to innovation and quality. The facility, meticulously designed by Peter Urquhart, founder and Managing Director of the company, is designed to optimise the manufacturing processes, ensuring precision and efficiency in the production of underwater lighting. It is anticipated that the new manufacturing facility will elevate the company’s capacity to deliver exceptional and customised underwater lighting solutions for the Superyacht Industry well into the future.
Along with the new factory, a new product, the QTE140 has been launched, featuring a larger aperture and universal beam adjustment to deliver enhanced underwater illumination. This innovative underwater light is designed to provide a significant increase in brightness, catering to the demand for more powerful lighting solutions in marine environments. The larger aperture ensures a broader coverage area, making the QTE140 ideal for illuminating the surroundings of yachts and cruise ships.

In conclusion, Underwater Lights Ltd. is not just a business; it’s a commitment to excellence, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. By working alongside them you can navigate the light industry with confidence, knowing that your underwater lighting system is in the hands of a company that has stood the test of time and continues to illuminate the marine industry with unwavering brilliance. Kings of carbon
Multiplex offers high end solutions for the biggest yachts afloat. Their carbon boarding systems are second to none.
Making things simpler, lighter, easier and more convenient is part of the philosophy of multiplex. Founded in 1986, the creative think tank has developed swiftly but surely to become a global market leader in the field of boarding systems, offering top-quality products based on carbon fibre – gangways, ladders, railings, fender launch systems and awnings in the most exclusive design. As well as being supremely stylish, they have the properties that are needed on all yachts – they are lightweight, easy to handle and stow away and moreover they are absolutely rustproof and highly resistant to environmental influences such as salt water. Behind the scenes, a team of nearly 20 people works tirelessly in the R&D and design departments and, of course, in manufacturing. Custom solutions are not an exception at multiplex, but the standard. Designed and parameterizable with high end software, multiplex products are a guarantee for highest quality and absolute fitting accuracy. No other manufacturer of carbon equipment for superyachts offers this combination of services. This is one of the reasons why multiplex is considered the world market leader in this segment. Among other things, multiplex has equipped 80 of the world‘s 100 largest motor yachts to date and supply all the major shipyards around the globe.
MULTIFLAP
The multiflap is light, stable and resistant to deformation. It is also weatherproof, which means that neither wind nor seawater can cause any harm. With a weight of 4.4 kg per metre and a quick, simple fixing system, it can be mounted and dismounted by a single person. The practical hinge system keeps storage space to a minimum.

MULTIGUARD

SUN AWNING SYSTEM
Easy installation and less weight combined with elegant design let the sun awning system become a product which enjoys great popularity. Each sail is individually hand-made so it will suit perfectly the vessel’s outline. Miscellaneous paintings of the poles, several types of sailcloth, loud speakers and lights can personalize the systems according to taste.
The multiguard system is a railing made from pure carbon fibre, designed and shaped according to a client’s individual requirements. Despite its low weight the multiguard system can withstand a lateral pressure of up to 100 kilos and has been certified by Lloyds Register. As is standard with multiplex, the system is available in a free choice of colours with worldwide service.

MULTISTAIR

MULTIFENDER
Based on the multifender modular component system, all multifender systems are produced according to individual requirements. This means that we tailor the multifender to all imaginable conditions so that it can be used in absolutely every location. With responsible utilization, the multifenders are basically designed for vessels weighing up to 12 tons.
The multistair can be used for access over the side, or over the stern, directly into the cockpit. It can be swung 90 degrees from a fully horizontal to a fully vertical position, with all steps automatically aligning in parallel with the surface of the sea. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100% corrosion resistance.

MULTILADDER
The multiplex multiladder system is based on the multiplex typical carbon fibre compound construction system. The lightness of this ladder construction enables an easy and quick assembly and dismantling. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100 % corrosion resistance. Multiplex swim ladders are also characterised by optimum ergonomic features and need less space for stowage.

ANTIGUA CHARTER YACHT SHOW 2024 Start Your Charter Season In Style

Photography by:
Acquafilms, Odyssey Films & Colin SquireEDITION 63 – 4TH – 9TH December
As edition 63 of this incredible gathering of yachts, Charter Agents and Crew approaches we can look back to December 2023 with pride, knowing that what took place throughout the docks of English Harbour and Falmouth Bay was indeed quite spectacular. Those few days between the 4th & 9th of December 2023 brought the Antigua Charter Yacht Show back to its glory days, the days of Covid and extremes of recent yacht charter seasons but distant memories, the charter yachts were back again on steady seas.
But of-course for all of those that know Antigua well, the fire that devasted the Antigua Yacht Club Marina on that awful, storm filled evening of October 2nd, will never be forgotten, it changed Falmouth Harbour and many lives in just a few short hours. Arriving for the show and driving into the car park close to where this building stood had one wondering what would be revealed behind the white board cladding that stood as a shield. Nothing remained to even hint at the devastation of only eight weeks before. The foundations had become a dazzling white platform containing a small bar and tables. It was amazing to see and wonder just, ‘How did that happen.’ Now plans are afoot to restyle this area and rebuild, even better than before.
But the show was indeed one of the best ever held. The yachts in attendance, 67 in total, were top quality, certainly of those that would charter in the Caribbean during the 2023/24 season, and in total length superseded anything that had gone before. The yachts on display were magnificent, and lit up the docks of English Harbour, Falmouth Marina and the Yacht Cub Marina magnificently, not just during the day, but at night with a dazzling display of lighting above and below the water line. During the day, as always, the Brokers and Vendors were free to walk amongst them as they met with each other, but more importantly with those hard-working crews, Captains, Engineers, Deck and Interior, that are all needed to bring the yachts, and show of this scale and importance to life, to make it breathe.

Having sailed vast distances to get to their allotted berth, the yachts had been turned out, in just a few days, if not hours, to look their sparkling best, and those that form the amazing crews were turned out in their spotless uniforms that allowed, Just by a quick glance, visitors to ascertain their positions onboard. Many traditions of the marine world in which we operate have been around for centuries and yachting today relishes in those traditions, uniforms being one, but flags, horns and many more, unseen, remain as an integral part of running vessels of this scale.
But we also have the brokers that turn up in their hundreds to view the yachts on show. They do this for a reason, we can all look at a website, at this or that yacht, a bit like looking at a cake, but what is it really like, is it as those that are trying to sell it telling the truth, you will never find out until you have tasted it. Those Charter Agents are here to do the tasting for their clients, to go back and tell of their onboard experiences, to hear what others are saying about this or that vessel, they have to get it right, it’s a tough world dealing with the wealthy, get it wrong and they deal with somebody else that is knocking on their door.
Many of the yachts hold daily lunches, and some full-on evening meals for those lucky few that get invited on board. Being pampered by the crew is a sales technique honed over years by experienced Captains, many who live by their charter reputations. They are a bit like a football club manager, their reputation follows them from yacht to yacht, where the Captain goes, the agents follow, as do their clients. Of-course many Captains never move, or rarely, and will dedicate their lives to one family, Owners like continuity alongside their yachting lifestyle.
As with all of the Antigua Charter Yacht Meetings the events that take place every day and evening are legendary and, without doubt, have set the format of other shows held around the world. The Concours de Chef and Tablescaping Competition are a great example, several questions are always asked of a yacht before a charter is placed. The obvious ones, size, cabins, sail/power, availability, cost, but pass all of these and then there is the overriding one, FOOD. The show addresses this with its Concours de Chef and Tablescaping competition, this awards prizes to all varieties of vessels and to win one, and get placed, is a great boost for the yacht and its charter possibilities,

and of course for the Chef and Interior Crew themselves, it is an honour that can be attached to any CV when it comes to future job prospects. The presentations at the 2023 winners evening were overwhelmingly applauded with a turnout of hundreds at the awards ceremony, which came to a halt just after the final winners were announced with a torrential downpouring of rain. You can see the winners at www.antiguayachtshow.com but the best in show was M.Y. Samsara with Chef - Sinead Finnigan and Chief Stewardess – Stephanie Cave.
But to wrap this up, if you are heading to the Caribbean for the 2024/25 winter season, and are thinking of chartering, there really is no better way to begin those incredible few months in paradise than spending a week or so in Antigua. The crew can experience a true Caribbean island and revel in English Harbour with its restaurants, bars and a history like no other, and, at the same time, they can all experience the fun and pride of taking part in the most exclusive and oldest charter yacht show that takes place anywhere in the world. Indeed, Antigua, a unique yachting experience like no other!

With four decades fully immersed in the maritime industry in naval-military, super-yacht operation, refit-and-repair, yacht-management, charter, yachttechnology, and yacht brokerage, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca brings to the maritime industry a mature and acute vision and focus.
Initially trading under the Just World Leisure banner in the early 2000s – providing yacht-charter, hospitality, and brokerage services – Just & Co has recently concentrated more specifically on technological innovations in both yacht communications and internet-at-sea requirements, and on the research-and-development and promotion of new naval architecture hull-form applications.
Recognising the limited evolution of hull-design concepts over the decades – and resulting lack of ‘sea-comfort’ in smaller boats - a collaboration and partnership was formed during the past 20 years with the Icelandic-based team behind the invention of the revolutionary ‘ÖK Hull Technology’ the company RAFNAR ehf. This has in recent years lead to the expansion of the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, which Just & Co represents from Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
The revolutionary RAFNAR boats and their unusual ‘ÖK Hull’ provide the ability to travel long distances at sea in unique comfort in ‘displacement mode’, at high speed; with little fatigue and stress encountered for guests, crew, or the actual boat. Prime importance is placed upon ‘Keeping Comfort at Sea’, durability, reliability, and safety – allowing a softer and more efficient ride and experience at sea, and a very significant decrease in uncomfortable ‘bounce-and-slam’.

Superyacht Tour – 2024
Could this have been the Fam. trip of all trips. Many organisations over the past years have taken VIP groups from our industry on tours to highlight what their individual Countries have to offer those that chose to take a Superyacht cruise. By nature, many adventurous souls will venture from the normal path to seek out exceptional experiences, to find and explore places that they have heard of but never visited. Egypt by its very nature is saturated with a history of Pharaohs, Kings, Queens, tombs and temples and one mighty river, enough and more to place it on everybody’s personal bucket list. But it is also encased with over 2,900 Km of coastline, along its Mediterranean, Gulf of Suez / Red Sea and Aqaba coasts. With the Government of Egypt now turning its attention to what this coastline, along with its many treasures has to offer the cruising elite, it took the initiative and invited 12 VIP’s on the first ever Fam. trip to their remarkable country, this is their story!
Photography Colin Squire

A Yacht Broker in Egypt
Anthony Huck – Head of Retail Charter –Bluewater YachtingWhen talking about Egypt, either at work or among friends, the reaction is similar, Egypt is without doubt the world’s number one cultural destination – with its incredible history of Pyramid building, Pharaohs, Mummies, and fascinating Temples, it simply leaves people in awe of a civilisation that brought so much to the human race. But those same people tend to omit the country’s strong connection to water, whether it’s the Mediterranean coastline, the Suez Canal and its own incredible history, the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba with their many pristine reefs and the Nile, the world’s longest river at 6650 Km that gives life to so much along its banks.

Ancient Egyptian civilization is a captivating topic that cannot be ignored, and it can easily be understood why its Government and population have placed this extraordinary culture at the epicentre of their economy. But today, the challenge they face is to move with the times and to promote and build further yachting infrastructure around the unique cruising grounds they host. When combining Egyptian history and culture with the potential that yachting can bring, one can easily understand why it is now being considered of major importance to the country.
To better understand the challenge, I along with 11 new friends, were invited by Colin and Dr Khaled Sherif, who represents the Egyptian Government, to tour Egypt for 10 days. This involved cruising the Nile in the centre of Cairo, at night, as we were hosted at a special dinner by Government officials. Then, of course, the ancient Pyramids and the nearby new and unworldly Grand Egyptian Museum, now host to all 5,000 of Tutankhamun’s treasures and more. We toured the Red Sea and the vibrant city of Sharm El-Sheikh, and just across the water we visited charming marinas like El Gouna (a taste of Sardinia’s Porto Cervo) which preceded a four-hour drive across intriguing dessert landscapes to Luxor. Here we

began a cruise along the majestic Nile to Aswan, watching beautiful landscapes (where time seems to have stood still) as we went. We of course toured the many famous Temples and Tombs along its banks with our personal guides. Finally, the tour concluded at Egypt’s gateway from the Mediterranean Sea, the city of Alexandria, with its many treasures, where we were honoured to be taken aboard to explore the 146m Mahroussa, launched 160 years ago as Egypt’s Royal Yacht. She is without doubt the oldest, and one could say the most beautiful and historically endowed Superyacht afloat. Indeed, an experience like no other.
It has to go without saying that the potential for both Egypt and our industry are huge, and the possibilities endless, as luxury yachting in the Red Sea gathers pace. It was noticeable how the Government were talking to professionals of many kinds, and key players of our industry, to ensure that high end yachting enthusiasts will be able to enjoy cruising Egyptian waters with as few problems as possible in the coming years. Behind the scenes, a team of local and international experts have been missioned to ease communication and make sure the logistic are placed to welcome this new type of tourism, known for having exceptionally high expectations; whether it is related to modern berthing for superyachts, shipyards for maintenance and repair, crew facilities, charter regulations and customs clearance, transport and accommodation, nothing has been left unthought of, and every aspect is being taken into consideration. Our tour group were the first lucky witnesses of that transformation taking root as Egypt embraces our special kind of yachting. Myself and all involved are happy to share that incredible 10-day experience and to share our adventure, one that none of us will ever forget.
Egypt is more than legitimate to become the new yachting destination!
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation
Mark Binnie – Partner – Yacht Management Consultant, Dpa & Director Burgess Yachts
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC) is a spectacular new museum in Old Cairo covering 490,000 square metres designed by Egyptian architects and inaugurated by the President in 2021. This is the first museum in the Arab world devoted to the entirety of Egyptian Civilisation.
This amazing museum is designed to represent Egyptian civilisations throughout the ages, from prehistoric times right up to the present day. The museum will eventually exhibit 50,000 artefacts with many of these being moved from other museums and collections.
The establishment and organisation of the NMEC has received considerable support from UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation who

aim to promote peace and security by promoting international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication and information.
The NMEC permanent collection is divided.
The Chronological part displays artefacts assembled from different ages of Egyptian history:-
■ Archaic
■ Pharaonic
■ Greco-Roman
■ Coptic
■ Medieval
■ Islamic
The Themed part has artefacts grouped by:-
■ Dawn of Civilisation
■ The Nile
■ Writing
■ State and Society
■ Material Culture
■ Beliefs and Thinking
■ Modern and Contemporary
■ (and of particular note) ‘The Gallery of Royal Mummies’
To coincide with the inauguration of the NMEC in 2021 there was a spectacular ‘Pharaoh’s Golden Parade’ through Cairo when 18 Kings and four Queens were transported from their old home in the Egyptian Museum to their new home at the NMEC, each on a custom-built vehicle in the style of an Egyptian funerary boat. The Parade included a concert and 21-gun salute and the Kings and Queens were escorted by 60 motorcycles and 150 horses.
Quoting the Museum website, it states that the Royal Mummies Hall is specially designed to display the mummies of the ancient Kings and Queens of Egypt and to give the visitor the feeling of strolling down the Valley of the Kings. Although appreciating that these Kings and Queens tombs were desecrated many years ago, I couldn’t help feeling that they and everyone involved in building the Pyramids, or digging their tombs, would be a little disappointed that they ended up in a museum, or perhaps a museum offers them the best form of immortality in today’s world?

Grand Egyptian Museum & The Tut Ankh Amun (Tutankhamun) Immersive Show

Lucinda Rosen – Charter Broker – Cecil Wright
Our tour of Egypt included a visit to the newly built, and stunning, Grand Egyptian Museum. Situated just 2km from, and with wonderful views of, the Giza Pyramid complex. This museum is immense, not just in terms of size (81,000 sqm), but in terms of what it contains being an astonishing 100,000 artefacts from ancient Egyptian civilisation, including the complete 5000 item, Tutankhamun collection. Of these, 18,000 items are expected to be on display at any one time. To walk amongst these awesome artefacts in such a magnificent building was inspiring to say the least, the word set most in people’s minds was, HOW, and that included the building itself.
As a way of bringing this collection to life, the museum has installed an extraordinary exhibition, a ground-breaking ‘immersive show’ which retells the story of King Tutankhamun using digital projections. Through a tall and simple curtain, we entered a large room with high ceilings. We were invited to enjoy what we were about to see, either sitting on one of the many stools dotted around the room, or, as advised, to stand up and stroll around to truly get the best perspective. I can honestly say that staying seated would be a challenge! Music and projectors filled the room, images filling every surface – all four walls and even the floor, with a thrilling and life-like moving projection, dramatically depicting the King himself, then the landscape, colours and vibrancy of this ancient land. One moment you are beside the Grand Pyramid with a dramatic and electric night sky, the next you are inside a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, flanked on every side by fire pits and torches. The next moment you would be immersed in a swirling sandstorm, then a magical and tinkling night

sky. Suddenly, you’re are on an incredibly realistic journey along the river Nile, swooping along the delta and witnessing for yourself the animals, the people, the boats, the temples and even the vegetation as it would have appeared in ancient times. Around your feet ran bugs and small creatures of every kind.
The narrative is from the perspective of the King, telling his dramatic story. For people of any age this immersive experience is a real thrill, and the technology behind it is nothing short of genius. Like the Pyramids, in sight and walking distance across the desert, a sensation not to be missed!
The Pyramids of Giza & The Sphinx
Lea Tintaud Abbas – Charter Broker/Private Helicopter Pilot –Moravia Yachting
The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx were, to me, timeless marvels that I had only before seen in movies or history books. I had expected big, but what appeared in front of me was more than monumental! Rising from the golden sands of Egypt, here they were, defying the passage of time for me to wonder at!
A testimony of Egyptian grandeur and ambitions from a time, so long ago.
We arrived at the golden hour, a time when the sand particles in the air reflected the sun at every step, making the atmosphere around us sparkle. The light is different in Egypt and seeing the sun hit the side of that first ‘Great’ Pyramid, I could understand then why Egyptians once worshiped Ra - the Sun God with such enthusiasm.
Behind us, the desert. In front, the iconic trio that need no introduction…. and dogs! So many dogs, cared for by the authorities and sharing this sacred place, coming to greet us and wanting to play. They all looked the same. ‘What breed are they?’ Marta asked. ‘Probably Ponzi dogs’ I replied… we laughed, before being quickly summoned by our

guide. ‘Behold the Great Pyramid of Khufu!’ he stated and then went into his history lesson. The first, and tallest of the three main tombs, initially standing at 146.6m, is a monumental masterpiece. Standing tall and proud. 2.3 million blocks averaging 2.5 tons were used in its construction, how could man ever build such a thing so long ago.
While I was making jokes, these Pyramids were whispering secrets to us of an ancient civilization and we could not unveil them all as, sadly, the site had to close by 4pm. We circled around with our tour guide and I learned the second was called the Pyramid of Khafre, with some of its limestone façade still in place, and the third, the Pyramid of Menkaure, a little aside of its siblings.
Now, imagine yourself standing in the shadow of these ancient wonders, in a world heritage site, feeling the weight of history pressing down upon you. The sun dips low on the horizon, casting a golden glow upon this sea of sand, bathing us (and the occasional camels) in a warm embrace. It’s a moment frozen in time, a glimpse into the past and one of humanity’s greatest achievements and at one time, its greatest.
At what cost, a little voice said in my head. How many men, how many hours of work did such an enterprise require in those times when life was cheap? Did the people pride themselves in building those iconic resting places for their Kings? So many questions with no answers, simply adding to the mystery of this fabled place.
But where is the Sphinx? I remember wondering as I was searching for the enigmatic guardian of the Giza Plateau.
With the body of a lion and the face of a Pharaoh, this mythical creature looked small compared to what I had imagined as it came into view. In front of that stony gaze, and set well back, rows and rows of chairs, like as if in an open-air cinema, maybe for tourists to applaud this past architectural achievement and all that surrounds it, or to simply watch the sunset as another day ends for the 14 million tourists that visit annually.
Behind this modern set-up, that facilitates contemplation for those in search of energy and a rest- The Sphinx Café. Here you will meet the seasoned traveller, the adventure seeker, the history enthusiast and in more recent times- the selfie taker! Here, two worlds collide, the past and present offering a striking contrast. Ancient hardship and human toil

has been displayed for thousands of years on this very site, where, now, it clashes with modern tourism. The sand and those many stones sit in the distance, and as we pull away in our coach, we pass the rows of hoardings, busses, camels, horses pulling carriages, tour guide flags and souvenir sellers, all a part of an incredible experience that has endured for centuries in one form or another on this famous plateau.
So, while you can, run to see them, go on a Camel tour, select your guide carefully (we had the best) and try and avoid the crowds, then you to can stand and simply marvel and really soak up the magic of this place, images alone cannot do it justice. I did, I will never forget! Thank you Egypt
El Gouna Marinas – Soma Bay Marina, Cascades Hotel & Golf Course
Jeff Houlgrave – Senior Associate – Marina Projects Ltd.
During our recent trip to Egypt as guests of the Egyptian Tourism Ministry we visited several marinas on the Red Sea coast, the first of these being those at El Gouna.
The El Gouna marina complex is a part of a much larger property development that is now well established in the local landscape and also on the tourism map. The well occupied marinas provide sheltered berthing for up to 35m yachts and has excellent shoreside facilities, including restaurants, hotels and a remote boatyard. The majority of vessels using this marina are motor boats which is to be expected, with the odd sailing yacht. Diving of course is part of Red Sea culture and this is well served.
Back on the coach we headed south to a large mixed-use resort called Soma Bay located about an hour’s drive from Hurghada International airport. Whilst we stayed in the excellent Cascades Golf Resort Hotel that is surrounded by golfing facilities and many fine fairways, we visited the Soma Bay marina the next morning to discover a fairly small basin with beautifully clean water. The marina is very sheltered and has a fuel berth and restaurants. Soma Bay also offers extensive diving experiences based from the marina. The owners of Soma Bay have plans to soon extend the area of the marina as the market develops.

During our visit it was clear that there are very few facilities for yachts of 45m+ yet this is surely where the future market lies. The Egyptian Government recognises the potential of attracting the larger yachts and will provide the infrastructure in due course. The use of fixed mooring buoys will be a cornerstone of this infrastructure and provide environmental sound berthing in pristine locations. In the town of Hurghada itself, we did not have the time to call in here, there is, I have been told, a larger marina that can take a few larger yachts stern to on the outer wall.
There is no doubt that the already established marinas for the smaller yachts will drive the expansion to serve the larger visitors of the future.
Editors Note: On a previous visit I did call into Hurghada Marina. They can dock a variety of lengths of vessel up to 90m. The largest vessels need to go stern to on the outside wall where there is space for a very few of these longer vessels.
Desert Drive - Luxor & Karnak Temples
Marta Iglesias – Retail Charter Broker – Camper & Nicholsons Int.
‘What playlist shall I listen to during a four-hour drive across the desert?’ That is the question I had in my mind the night before we left on another leg of our amazing tour, I shouldn’t have bothered, there would be no need to distract myself with music. I simply could not keep my eyes off the road as we were driving through, what looked like, the outer skin of the Earth. The dramatic desert scenery, (approx. 95% of Egypt is considered desert) changed at every glance, at times we were enclosed in small canyons, at others looking out over sand and rock that stretched far into the distance, if you have never seen it, well it really is quite mesmerising.
And then, just a few hours into the drive, as we were approaching Qena, it felt as if we had crossed into a different dimension. The towns and villages we passed with their children, workers, donkeys, trucks, and fields of crops that stretched as far as one could see along this fertile band. And then, there she was, the mighty Nile, at 6650km the longest river in the world.

Upon arriving in Luxor we were met by Rifai, who would be our excellent guide for the next few days. Our first lesson, as he explained it to us, ‘We are now on the East Side of the Nile, where the sun is born. Therefore, there is no death here, only life. This is what the temples at Karnak and Luxor celebrate, they are a tribute to the power of the Pharaohs and their divine aspirations.’
We started with a visit to the Karnak Temple Complex. We were overwhelmed by its size, by the main hall where we could feel the vibes of the ancient inhabitants of Thebes, the new city of Luxor was built amid its ruins, but most of all the 134 massive towering, stone columns, how was it ever constructed!
After the visit to Karnak, we checked in on the cruise ship, which would be our home for the next few days. When we arrived at the Luxor temple later that day, we were greeted by Ramses II himself, as two colossal statues of him guard the two towers at the entrance. Once inside, Ramses II was the number one presence, with numerous images and statues of this mighty Pharaoh of the New Kingdom era. The Luxor and Karnak temples are connected by a recently opened 3km avenue that once displayed an estimated 1057 statues, 807 of which were Sphinx shaped and 250 with ram shaped heads, many still remain.

The Valley of the Kings & Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple
Barbara Müller – Senior Charter Broker – Ocean IndependenceThe Valley of the Kings is a burial site used during the New Kingdom (approx. 1500 to 1000 BC) containing the royal tombs of the Kings in Thebes. It is located near Luxor and situated on the West Bank of the River Nile and is without doubt the most famous necropolis in the world.
Stepping into the tombs left one with an unworldly feeling, it was as if our souls were being transferred into another world. Walking amidst the imposing structures, the weight of history was not only surrounding us on every side, but also hanging in the air. One couldn’t escape the emotional gravity of the place, where the spirits of rulers like Seti, Tutankhamun and Ramses II lingered all around and the workers that had toiled to create these historical venues had more than just left their unbelievable workmanship, you could almost sense their sweat.
The longer a King ruled the longer the passage was to his final resting chambre. Somehow it felt like each step taken was on a path to something otherworldly. All surfaces were decorated, meticulously planned and marked out by architects, then stone cutters came in to tirelessly chisel out the hieroglyphs and finally artists decorated everything in an attempt to portray the Kings life and all of his worldly needs for an afterlife.
It was an overwhelming feeling being there. The first, and the largest of the tombs was that of Seti, father of the famous Ramses II. Some of us had tears in

our eyes from the emotion that flooded us of what these workmen had accomplished some 3000 years ago.
After visiting three of the tombs, including that of Tutankhamun, a quite unimposing space containing still, his mummified body, we went to another impressive site just a few kilometres distance, Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple. Hatshepsut was a rare example of a female King in ancient Egypt. When her husband, Thutmose II died, the throne was passed on to her stepson. But as he was too young to reign, his stepmother Hatshepsut took control and made herself King. She was increasingly depicted as a physically fit male King. She had many monuments built and the one we visited was one of the grandest. After her death her stepson took power and at the site we saw how he had erased the depictions of her face by chiselling into the stone that depicted her.
Hatshepsut’s temple impressed us with a series of terraces containing colonnades, ramps, and statues. Its three-tiered structure incorporates a central ramp that leads to the uppermost level, where the main sanctuary, and apparently, a colossal statue of Hatshepsut once stood. The temple’s architecture integrates with the natural amphitheatre that embraces it, creating a visual impact against the limestone cliffs that is nothing less than architecturally perfect. Despite the attempts to erase her legacy Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple endures as a testament to her influence and artistic prowess that has embedded her immortality into the New Kingdoms ancient history.
It was noticed that a great number of the statues throughout Egypt had been defaced, or de-nosed. Ancient Egyptians believed that statues had a life force and if an enemy or tomb raider came across a statue it wanted to disable, one way was to break off the statues nose to hamper its breathing.

The Nile Cruise
Fiona Maureso – Senior Charter Broker – Northrop & Johnson
For anybody contemplating a visit to the sites of Egypt the Nile cruise is a must. The vessel that hosted our group, the MS Steinberger Minerva, proved perfect. She offers comfortable cabins, well-appointed public areas and a spacious top deck with sunloungers, bar area and splash pool. The service is very friendly and efficient and the food – with a wide choice of both local and international fare - is also very good. These are quite remarkable vessels in that they are built to link alongside each other in the often, overcrowded, berthing spots along the river. With their side doors open port and starboard, guests can wander through the receptions of all vessels to get ashore. It was also amusing to hear the airhorns that Captains would sound off as these vessels passed each other, each distinct in its own way.

A four-night trip on our Nile Cruiser from Luxor to Aswan was an ideal, and quite luxurious way, to visit some of Egypt’s most iconic cultural sites. Both Luxor and Aswan have international airports, making them easily accessible. The Karnac temples, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Philae temples are just a short drive away from the vessel’s overnight mooring spots, whilst the temples of Luxor, Edfu and Kom Ombo are right on the banks of the river.
Cruising along the Nile also affords an opportunity to experience a totally different side to Egypt. Seeing the scale of the Nile makes one aware of its power, it really is an awe-inspiring site to witness. Far from the noise and bustle of Cairo and Alexandria, the landscape is more pastoral with fertile, green fields and animals grazing on the river’s edge. We saw a great variety of bird and animal life, hawk’s, kingfishers, waterbirds, and fishermen going about their daily routines as they have for centuries. It was interesting to see ancient trains trailing loads of sugar cane to the factories, water buffalo and donkeys, often allowed to roam freely on the many small, green islands we passed. Of course, I have to mention the many Feluccas that could show quite a turn of speed, and manoeuvre so quickly when they had to, of course, thanks to Dr Khaled Sherif, our host supreme, we soon found ourselves trying these out for real.
Going through the Esna Lock, between Luxor and Edfu, was a fascinating and impressive experience, alongside the local boatmen touting their wares from small boats that had preceded us in. They at one point had attached themselves to our fenders using grappling hooks as we did ten or more knots on the approach to the locks, in the dark. An alarming process to watch, but of course they had been perfecting this art for many years. They would throw up blankets, clothing etc. what seemed an impressive distance, to the top deck, hoping a wealthy, watching tourist, would buy what they had, they often did!
That trip will remain with me for ever.

Edfu Temple, Kom Ombo Temple & Crocodiles
Grant Hobart – Deputy Registrar Europe at Maritime Cook Islands
Visting Egypt as a part of the Egypt Superyacht Tour of 2024 was a fantastic experience that I am proud to have been a part of with such a group of wonderful people in a beautiful country that made us welcome wherever we travelled.
Fortunately for me, Nile Crocodiles, that can grow to five metres in length or more, now only exist in the upper reaches of the Nile beyond the Aswan High Dam. In years past they existed along the whole length of this giant river and the ancient Egyptians loved animals, especially crocodiles. Not only did they incorporate these animals into their religious beliefs, they also honoured them as gods by taming and breeding them, only to then sacrifice and mummify them. As you can imagine the Egyptians had a complex relationship with the Nile Crocodile, and the crocodile god Sobek, they literally mummified tons of baby and adult crocs.
A museum has been created close to the beautifully kept Temples that themselves are over 2000 years old, and the museum is dedicated to mummified crocodiles. There are 22 on display, all incredibly well preserved and quite a spectacle to admire.
Not being much of an historian, once I had it explained to me that the Edfu and Kom Ombo temples were built in a time just before the Romans took control of Egypt, I started to take serious note of the ‘graffiti’ left by the Roman soldiers on the walls. It was interesting to see and imagine what it must have been like for the oldest empire to ever exist to be taken over after an invasion by the ‘new’ and upcoming Romans.

I found it quite confusing to follow all of the family history that is described in the hieroglyphics throughout the temples, what was quite clear to me is that family sagas, hated stepmothers or stepfathers and constant arguing amongst siblings has not changed since those early times!

One final note of interest that I could not stop thinking of is that the Egyptians of so long ago were an ancient civilisation that had very masterfully conquered the art of moving huge and very heavy blocks of stone to build Temples and Pyramids and then to carve them perfectly to fit seamlessly together. Hard to believe when you see the size of the stones lifted and the heights that they were lifted to. Plus, the carving of the images on those many blocks, so perfectly done, but how…

Aswan, Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk, Quarry & High Dam
Charlie Merchant – Commercial Director – TWW Yachts
Day seven of our tour of Egypt began onboard our transport and home for the past three days, the MS Steigenberger Minerva. We awoke to find ourselves moored at our final stop along the Nile, Aswan. We began our day onboard our coach that soon crossed the Low Aswan Dam, enroute to our visit to the High Dam, several kilometres upriver. The High Dam, completed in 1970, is so impressive, mainly due to its height and width, that it’s hard to articulate its true size. Rising 111m from its base, and stretching over 3,810m, it created Lake Nasser, one of the world’s largest artificial lakes at 550km, which we were told also holds back the crocodiles from the lower stretches of the Nile! During its creation it changed the landscape, both up and down river, upriver it displaced communities by simply engulfing them and agricultural land along its length with water, however it stimulated additional infrastructure, economic development and energy production.

Between the High and Low Dams sits a reservoir where a number of islands are situated, one of which was destined to be our next stop. We arrived at a cobbled slip way that led down to what seemed hundreds of small motor boats that are used to take passengers to Agilkia Island, an island that sits in the middle of the reservoir, on top of which sits the Philae Temple - an ancient Egyptian marvel dedicated to the goddess Isis. The temple was relocated to the island in the 1970s saving it from submersion due to the construction

of the High Dam. An amazing feat for such a large and impressive structure that was moved stone by numbered stone, after being dug from under meters of sand just a short distance away. Its intricate carvings and stunning architecture reflect the rich religious and cultural history of Egypt, which that evening we returned to, and all enjoyed, as part of a story being told via a light show under the stars.
Our next destination was to one of Egypt’s wonders, the famous Unfinished Obelisk, one that is nearly one-third larger than any other ancient obelisk in existence. The visit offered a step back in time to the New Kingdom (1550-1070 BC) where in this ancient pink granite quarry laid the unfinished and broken colossal monument that provides a unique glimpse into the construction techniques of the skilled workmen who worked here. Evidence of chiselled small holes are seen throughout the site, holes into which wood is wedged and soaked with water causing it to expand, and, as it does, it causes the granite to break along its base, allowing the stone to be extracted. The 1,200-ton, Unfinished Obelisk, remains in the quarry due to a crack that appeared in the stone during the preparation phase, after which it was abandoned, however how they then expected to move the stone, not only from its resting place, but down the quarry face onto a floating vessel and down the Nile, was a conversation that had us all talking for some time – many hands make light work, quite unfathomable!
As an extra treat at the end of a long day, and Dr Khaleds love of sailing, and ours, and before the evenings visit back to the Philae Temple for the light show, we split into two

race teams, to take part in an evening sail in traditional Nile River Felucca’s. As you can imagine this became competitive, I took the helm of one with my team, and Dr Khaled, our delightful host for the tour, and his team, took the helm of the other, resulting in lots of singing, cheering, laughing, and a final dash ashore as the sun ended another wonderful day in Egypt that preceded our trip to the light show.
Sharm El-Sheikh
David Robinson – Superyacht Writer & Reporter
Our short visit to Sharm El-Sheikh followed the pattern of the trip in that we were given a lot of information to absorb and relate to how visits of superyacht guests could enjoy what is one of Egypt’s leading holiday venues both for the rich and not so rich.
The beautifully kept city is much more than just an important holiday centre serving a very wide clientele and a hub for diving and water sports. It is a location that within Egypt is taking on an increasing and more significant status, not least in having being the centre for the COP27 meeting in 2022.
Our visit comprised primarily of a cruise along the coast from the cruise centre to Shark Bay which gave us an overview of the size of the city and the large number of visitors that come to this destination. Sharm El Sheikh is also strategically-located on the corner of the

Sinai Peninsula and its potential for future development and growth, which includes the possibility of a new marina which may be operational by 2027, is exciting.
Sharm El-Sheikh, while being within the Red Sea region, sits like a geographical guardian at the southern end of the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba and almost within stone throwing distance of the north-western corner of Saudi Arabia where the mammoth NEOM City is under development.
It is also situated at a ready point of access to a group of islands in the northern Red Sea which offer outstanding diving options, but also select and possibly somewhat exclusive opportunities for the development of high-end resorts which in the future could be of interest to Superyacht guests if appropriate berthing and/or anchorage facilities are made available.
The city is also crucial for local ocean conservation with four marine parks and protected zones nearby and to cater for more people visiting, the airport is being expanded with a new terminal and runway to increase its annual capacity by 10 million passengers to a total of 18 million.
Our coastal cruise readily highlighted that the city already had a range of top end hotels and villas available which could be appropriate for visiting superyacht guests. It is also well known that a number of Middle Eastern royal families have homes on this coast.

The Presidential Yacht Mahroussa & Alexandria
Johnathan Syrett – Founder & Sales Broker – Hamilton MarineOur visit to the Presidential Yacht Mahroussa (1865) 146m-LOA x 12.98m-Beam x 5.53m-Draft and 4,760-G.T. in Alexandria was an absolutely unexpected treat and honour, something I will treasure. For Egypt and the Egyptian Navy to have maintained this magnificent and very relevant, historical yacht, indeed the oldest and largest surviving superyacht globally, in seemingly great condition with its original interior, is a testament to the countries willingness and dedication to preserving its maritime and cultural heritage.
A very brief history of the vessel is that in 1863 Egypt’s ruler, Khedive Ismail, ordered Egypt’s Royal Yacht from London based shipbuilders, Samuda Brothers. She was designed by Oliver Lang, who designed Queen Victoria’s first steam yacht, with the aim of being a state-of-the-art ocean-going paddle steamer. In August 1865, the then 125m and 5-deck vessel, was handed over to its Egyptian crew, who sailed her from the River Thames to Alexandria.
A significant moment was in 1905 when she returned to the UK and her side paddles were removed, her engines upgraded, and three propellers installed.
She has served the rulers of Egypt in one way or another ever since her launch and is maintained by the Egyptian Navy.
The presence of Mahroussa at boat shows and yachting events worldwide would be a fabulous way to showcase Egypt and its yachting potential in an extraordinary and exclusive

way. The same can be said of her potential to carry on her role as a diplomatic, commercial, and cultural ambassador to the county. If it could be possible to combine her naval use with an educational and environmentally friendly mission, with the current tightening demands and challenges, this could give a new breath of fresh air to this fabulous and unmatched vessel.

Mahroussa is berthed at the Alexandria Shipyard located in Alexandria Port on the Northern Mediterranean coast of Egypt. This is an active civilian and military port with shipbuilding and refit capability, which is also the base for much of the country’s maritime trade.
During our visit to Alexandria, we were given a tour of the newly refurbished Cruise Terminal that will berth yachts of any size along its hundreds of metres of docking space, in a very secure area. Guests are then free to take a train or taxi on a 2hr. 30min. journey to see the archaeological sites surrounding Cairo,
Further highlights of the area for visitors are:
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Library, a modern architectural marvel that houses a vast collection of books and manuscripts, reflecting Alexandria’s rich past and present.
Citadel of Qaitbay: A historical and architectural marvel overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, built on the site of the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria.
The Graeco-Roman Museum stands as a bridge between ancient civilizations, preserving their legacy for generations to come.
Roman Theatre: A grandiose monument that showcases the Roman influence on Alexandria, with a circular auditorium, marble seats, and mosaic floors.
Montazah Palace Gardens: A tranquil oasis of botanical beauty, surrounding the former royal palace of King Farouk, with palm trees, flowers, and fountains.
