Prepare yourself for ‘The Red Sea Season’. You will have seen, I have no doubt, that Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project is well underway. Estimated to eventually cost some $500bn US this planned development will carry the dreams of Mohammed Bin Salman well into the future. The project is so vast that it will, by all accounts, still be under construction in 2040, and is expected to be the world’s first all green city, powered by wind and solar, and reduce the Kingdoms reliance on oil revenue by diversifying its economy into other futuristic sectors. One of the facts of its creation is that it will take an estimated 85 million tons of cement to build, not the greenest of construction materials, and further development will take place along almost the length of the west coast of Saudi Arabia’s section of the Red Sea that hosts an archipelago of over 90 untouched islands and innumerable pristine reefs.
But what does it mean for the Superyacht industry?
No doubt there will eventually be several new marinas along the Saudi Red Sea coastline, and I am sure the Egyptians will also follow suite and create new marinas that will be able to berth the largest yachts in the world. Rumour has it that Saudi citizens are being encouraged to buy yachts to enjoy this new playground, and of course these will ultimately help to fill the available berths alongside the expected visiting vessels from outside of the Kingdom. I am sure there are many yacht owners that will see the possibilities now being made available to themselves, their family and friends and travel to enjoy this planned futuristic development. I cannot see many wanting to visit in the middle of the European summer months when temperatures can be extreme and life far more pleasant in the Mediterranean, which as you know from recent summers, can also reach extremes in temperatures lasting for weeks. When that happens being on a yacht has to be one of the best options available, and of course a bonus for crew.
Hence ‘The Red Sea Season’ is, I believe, a distinct possibility in the years to come. Yachting has changed immensely over the past 40 years, charter yachts, or yachts that charter, are now very common and have owners that run them, in some cases, on a profit-making basis and not to simply offset some of the running costs. Many of these yachts are based in Greece which feeds perfectly into the Suez Canal, and thousands of others are not that much further afield. How easy would it be for those yachts to transit to the Red Sea and charter there, from around the end of September through to March, before returning for a quick refit, crew holidays, and the start of another season in the Mediterranean. If the infrastructure being built can offer the owners and guests on these yachts an unforgettable experience, and one that they cannot find elsewhere, it would make sense for them to charter, or cruise with the Owner, and not sit idle in their home ports.
It is not like having to transit to the Caribbean or USA, it would be much quicker and far less expensive, with less wear and tear on the yachts themselves. The vessel would not be exposed to long periods of bad weather as is possible in the larger oceans of the world. The Suez Canal is also becoming simpler to transit, and with Egypt looking to the needs of crew with the introduction of extended visas there is now a far more sensitive and yacht friendly approach emerging.
On the opposite side of the Red Sea coast, where the NEOM development is taking place, you have the amazing archaeology, museums and historic sites of Egypt, that sit near, or at the top of the bucket list of most travellers. There are several marinas to visit now that can take smaller yachts, and more being planned, or of course you can anchor off and take the tender ashore for an onward trip to the main areas that are of interest to you. It is noticeable how major yacht agents are now expanding their reach into these areas, as are other sectors of the industry, as companies recognise the potential that is on offer and how that is likely to expand in years to come as more Owners experience Arabian yachting as it has never been known before.

With innovation and “fun” woven into the culture, Quantum will continue to challenge the status quo, while ensuring the comfort and safety of passengers for generations to come.
For almost 40 years , Quantum has perfected the art of stabilization, offering patented, roll reduction systems that have become synonymous with safety and onboard comfort. With three international patents and two others soon to finalize, Quantum continues to challenge the status quo, while keeping “clean and green” solutions at the forefront of new innovations.
The latest sustainable innovation from Quantum is the new F45 Integrated Hybrid Power System for the 50m+ market. It is best described as revolutionary and technologically ahead of its time. This advanced electro/hydraulic power source uses the best attributes of both hydraulic and electric power systems.
While electric stabilizers have been well received in the smaller boat market (below 50m), the power required to push fins or rotors through the water on a large scale (50m+) is not practical or sometimes not possible.
Traditional hydraulic systems will continue to draw up to 40% of the maximum power to be “at-the-ready,” even when at idle. This represents a lot of wasted energy. In contrast, the new F45 drops to less than 1 kW at idle or in a standby mode. Unfortunately, managing the power fluctuations can pose a challenge for the generators and the overall grid.
To overcome the power fluctuation challenge, Quantum has developed two, very unique, methods of storing and recovering power for future use. This new solution is called MESS—Mass Energy Storage System, has the ability to outstrip a traditional capacitor bank by a power density factor of 8 times at less than half the cost. MESS is 100% compatible with the F45 System.
The new F45 uses a servo motor, coupled with a low inertia hydraulic pump mechanism that proportionately moves the hydraulic fluid in a closed loop, to sweep the fins. This greatly simplifies the overall system and removes all the components that make hydraulics inefficient.
- simplified maintenance requirements
- high-dynamic control
- a smaller system footprint
- reduced heat generation, due to improved efficiencies
- reduction in noise / improved sound isolation
- improved vibration isolation
The F45 meets both long-term energy efficiency requirements as well as the peak energy needs of the closed marine electrical system. The first prototype will be delivered and installed on a 46m Feadship refit during the first quarter of 2024. Quantum is prepared to change the “superyachting” world!
Alberto, it is great to meet up with you to discuss Lürssen and your involvement as sales director of their Refit Division. Can you tell us a little of your extensive international career?
Once I finished my studies in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1992 I stayed faithful to my love for sailing yachts for eight years. The first four years in Argentina where I designed and built small sailboats. The second four years in California with Alan Andrews. Serious Office, serious engineering, Transpac, Whitbread. It was an amazing time with all kinds of yacht racing until 2000 when I changed to the dark side, motor yachts. I worked over the years for Magnum Marine, Riva, Ferretti Group Vicem in Turkey and my last stop before I joined Lürssen, was Benetti. When Peter Lürssen called and invited me to Germany, I packed my bags and went, it was almost 10 years ago now. Luckily, I am half Italian and half German, which is helpful, as I had learnt German at a young age and learning the language as an adult would not have been that easy.
Your job, to simplify it, is to handle refit and warranty work?
refit@luerssen.de www.lurssen.comNo - not really. When I started the goal was to receive large, third-party yachts for refit and not just our own children.
After joining Lürssen I began, very systematically, to research every yacht of over 70 metres, the way we work does not suit vessels much smaller than this, and younger than 15 years, worldwide. In 2016, to the surprise of everyone, Lürssen acquired Blohm+Voss and seven years later I can say, without doubt, that I am very happy that through our hard work, we have succeeded in making Lürssen and Hamburg a recognised refit destination for this particular group of vessels. We still occasionally do cruise ships if we have a spot for them in our large graving dock.
Our refit mentality and expertise has long established roots as we have been refitting our own yachts for many years. Lürssen has also been serving the world of navy vessels and its particular requirements for a long time. It is important to stay in touch with our clients and monitor their vessels for refit and maintenance, to ensure the vessel is always in operational mode. I am doing so for approx. 165 vessels. The mentality was always there, ingrained in our DNA. When we bought Blohm+Voss we did so partly because they had a long history of refitting very large vessels. They were also good at cutting cruise ships in half and extending them, and servicing tankers and bulk
carriers during very short turnarounds before they were put back into service. We had all the necessary ingredients and once we had pulled everything together it brought wonderful fruit. I recently did a quick calculation and found that we had 650 metre of yachts that we were currently working on.
You said yachts up to 15 years old?
Yes, but we also have a yacht in the yard that has 20 years behind it. When you need to focus your search it is important to define your targets so that the focus is not vague. Unless the yachts are very big or important yachts, of a certain age, only few owners will decide to invest large sums of money on an extensive refit. Of course, there are some very old and special yachts that deserve to be kept in perfect condition, they are historical and their owners love them passionately, these are on my list.
So, I still have the older vessels in, but about 15 years is, on average, a good cut off point. Carinthia VII, who will shortly leave our yard, is about 20 years old, at that age you get to a slightly irrational point, much like a big house in the country, how much do you keep and how much do you pull down? The oldest I have on my list is from 1929, Nahlin, so I have had a few of the classics that we look after regularly, but the rest of them are less than 15 years.
I believe you did a massive refit on Nahlin, I photographed her in Antigua late last year. I have worked on a boat incredibly similar so can only guess at the problems that you encountered. I took a look at her close up and was very impressed!
Nahlin is a very special yacht and a regular customer. Some of the work we needed to do involved such old crafts that they were difficult to find. Imagine having to find a riveter for example, we had to take a gentleman out of retirement. She has been to the yard several times and the current owner looks after her very well. They use a special team of varnishers that come over from a Caribbean Island, about 20 of them. They are brush specialists and it is wonderful to watch the care and love they give to her.
But now of course you have the 97m Carinthia VII leaving the yard having undergone a long refit, another classic. I know her designer, Tim Heywood well, she is timeless. It must have been a pleasure to refit her?
Carinthia VII was supposed to be at the Monaco Yacht Show last year but then she was sold just the week before. Now she will be at the 2023 show. Our main job was to upgrade her from private use to commercial use. The new owner wanted to add a 12 m pool, in which you can not only bath but swim. The interior received an up-date as well. When you start opening things up and removing walls after 21 years, as we have recently done, the problems that need addressing become apparent. There are regulations to comply with and there is a lot of work to do. But this is not something new to us.
Is she coming out in the same colours?
The designers of the client, Cassina Bizzozero, have developed a new colour scheme. A slightly darker hull and the superstructure is in a beautiful grey. A brilliant reinterpretation of an iconic and, for some, untouchable exterior. She looks beautiful.
Does she have the same captain?
She had two German captains; they were well over retirement age but stayed with the owner who insisted they were kept. They have now retired.
How do you find a yacht to refit, do you put one on your radar and then go to see the captain or owner?
I have a sheet, I know which yachts are up for special surveys etc., then I try to stay as informed as I can of who is looking to get that work. In some case’s a yacht is identified waiting to be sold and when the yacht is purchased, the new owner and his team need to know how much they may need to fulfil their ideas for the vessel. If we know that a big yacht is coming up for sale, we are proactive, putting out feelers, talking to brokers, captains and sometimes owners to stay ahead of the game.
We have already had contracts signed for the winter season, and we are already talking to yacht owners for 2024/25. Our refit yards are like a big animal that needs to eat a lot so we need to know we have fall-backs should any problems arise and they do. I always need to have other yachts on the back burner to fill a gap with.
If you get someone dropping out, that is six months of lost work?
We have experienced cancellations, but on the other hand, we also have the luxury to choosewithout wanting to sound arrogant. But, we carefully analyze the yacht, the age, the client... the whole constellation and if we don’t have a good feeling about it, we sometimes decline.
Do you also have a package for the Captains and Crew where they can stay?
Absolutely, we make it as easy as possible for clients and crews to come here. We are ISM and ISPS certified, and provide yacht support and management services. We cater to every need of the yacht and crew, we do everything from accommodation to visas.
If you get a call from the owner’s representative and he says that the boat is down in Italy, can you give us a price, how can you walk onboard and come up with a quote. The figures are enormous, and you cannot just pluck them from thin air, how do you do it?
Colin, can you work for us, you are very reasonable and most people are not! Many well-known yacht management and yacht brokerage companies are not very well prepared when it comes to major refits, and there are often so many people involved, captains, chief engineers, chefs, and they call with a handful of information and expect us to give “The Ball Park Figure - BPF”. We are uncomfortable with BPF because it is very dangerous. A few years back we began to get very analytical, whether it was one of our builds or not, in order to give accurate quote’s we need to know the real scope of the work that’s expected, and we need pictures. Some people are very good, they even do extensive video calls from the boat, and then if we decide it is worth our effort we go onboard. We want to be able to do a proper quote, 5 years, 10 years, water ballast systems, updates of bridge work, you know, all of the important items. To do this properly it takes at least a month or maybe a month and a half of our time. We have to stand by our numbers and give real and detailed quotes. We travel if the project “seems right” and then inspect the vessel in person. I travelled once with 16 people.
I have a friend who ran a company who told me that to put a quote on a new build would cost thousands in research and time, and he would often feel that they would then put his quote to other companies in the running for the work, and then it would become a chase to the bottom!
Absolutely, and we always know that we will be the most expensive on the big jobs, so that is another thing when we do our bid, serious yacht management companies stay away from passing quotes around, but seriously, you will never know if they place your quote in front of someone else, you cannot stop it. In most cases, and if it is a regular job with no crazy things involved, I
can go with two or three colleagues and when we arrive I expect everything to be prepared and ready for inspection, even if it is between charters. I won’t take my team until everything has been uncovered to enable us to see clearly what needs doing. We are pedantically German, we arrive and split, I take the captain, someone takes the chief engineer and then, in the evening, we meet and check that we have what we need. On the second day we try to leave with a folder that the people preparing the offer can use under the supervision of the man that will hopefully become the project manager. He will be a part of our visiting team. When we are back in Germany we take our time and prepare a good offer, and in parallel to this we prepare the legal steps so that by the time the numbers are ready the lawyers have also completed all of their bits and pieces.
Do you find that when the boat arrives in Germany, and you have the list of work, the owner suddenly wants more things doing and the refit snowballs?
Providing there is an understanding that it will almost certainly take more time to do the extras, some owners won’t accept this, then absolutely. We love it. One yacht that is in at the moment started with a number and now they are double that figure, but the Owner is happy to be getting the work done in a quality yard and not suddenly have to find another yard to do this extra work at a later date.
One final question Alberto, over the past 10 years I feel that Lürssen have become one of the leaders in carbon emission reduction systems onboard yachts. Do you take this ethos to the refit yard too?
It is a difficult question, everything that is related to propulsion, for us, is off limits. On one yacht a couple of years ago we did a big job creating a large battery package that would resolve a generator problem. It was difficult with existing generators to obtain the power they needed at certain times and there was nothing on the market that could do it. We studied the problem for them and created a package of batteries that ended up working superbly, but they lost a cabin to the battery storage. We also had to make the cabin explosion proof, it was an enormously heavy problem solved.
Normally yachts are engineered for a certain engine and propulsion package making it very difficult to switch, there are always request as there is a lot written online about hybrid fuel, they always ask. We have also started doing heat recovery, every drop of hot water created uses the cooling fluids from the generators and mains. We have also started working in some cases with replacement glass that allows the cabins to stay cooler and drastically reduce one of the main culprits of energy use onboard, which is air conditioning. We have also been asked to look into light sensors, which are incredibly sophisticated, to turn the lights off after a certain time to reduce electricity use.
I had an owner that always had his yachts built in northern Europe and I asked why and his reply was that it was too hot in southern Europe, workers can concentrate on the job in hand in the North because it is cooler!
To have quality you need to have time and be very strict, the mentality of say the Italians and Germans is very different, it always has been, we both produce different boats for different owners. There are owners that are happy that the captain keeps quiet about big problems and there are owners who are the exact opposite, some owners need a Northern European yacht. I have shoes of my father that are 40 years old because they are quality. The Italians are building incredible yachts in terms of volume and so are we. Recently one of our owners chartered an Italian yacht and he said when he came off at the end of the cruise that he had no idea how they could build a yacht of that size, at the cost, and not go out of business.
I think that is the answer that will keep you both your Italian and German friends! Thank you Alberto and I am looking forward to my visit to Carinthia VII at the Monaco Show in a few weeks. Indeed, I will enjoy taking a walk-through Carinthia with you as my guest.
The first few months of 2023 have been groundbreaking for Underwater Lights Ltd., still a family-owned business, as their new, purpose built 5000sq ft manufacturing facility, still called The Great Dunton Forge, has become operational.
As the business had grown over the years it was realised that a new machining, testing and assembly plant would be required to keep up with the growing demand for their products. The team at Underwater Lights use Auto-cad and have also been fully trained in the use of Rhino, the latest 3D module used by designers and naval architects working on new projects. This enables the design for a new lights placement to be inserted directly onto Rhino to reveal the beam pattern of the light.
This year has also seen the launch of the new EXD underwater light and the implementation of ISO9001 that guarantees clients the best of quality and service. The purchase of a fourth Mazak CNC turning machine also means they can keep up with the increasing demand for retro fit units with almost immediate supply.
The story of Underwater Lights began back in 1991 when founder and M.D. Peter Urquhart designed the Original underwater light. His experience as a Chief Marine Engineer (1966-1976) drove him to gain his 1st. Class Steam and Motor Certificate, giving him in-depth knowledge of ship building materials, naval architecture, thermo-dynamics and electrical engineering. Later he became a Lloyds Registered surveyor, which gave him the insight and understanding of Rules and Regulations for ships and special craft. All very useful for the design and installation procedures for his lights.
The very first underwater light was called the BULLEYT and used a 150 watt metal halide lamp. Over time minor changes were made to improve thermal and light output efficiency and in 2005 a 250 watt metal halide lamp in the BULLEYT was tested and it was found that the extra power and lumen output (19,000) did not work and deteriorated the overall efficiency. Basically, the diameter of the glass lens (62.5mm) was too small and too much heat was being generated. This led to an increase in lens diameter to 75mm and the insert diameter from 100mm to 120mm. These increases in size had to be made to the screwed version installed in composite hulls. These lights were known as the ULTiMATE range.
The company began using LED’s and 2010 saw the launch of the QTLED range and retro fitting the old bulb system to LED began.
The key to developing new products is to ensure that the older generation of BULLEYT and ULTiMATE can be upgraded with ease. The aim is to always keep the same threads and internal sizes to allow clients to upgrade their units without hauling the boat.
32 years on and Underwater Lights Ltd. developed the QTS range which is arguably the most versatile and complete underwater light ever made for the marine industry. Designed in the simplest format possible the lights now accommodate a variety of light power outputs, colour options and input powers making them suitable for any boat from 20m up to the largest superyachts.
The through hull QTS-100 & QT-80-Ti is uniquely made from Titanium and can be used directly on metal hulls, subject to surveyor approval, as well as carbon fibre and composite/fiberglass hulls saving yards and installers hours, if not days, on installation and potential warranty concerns through galvanic corrosion.
The QTS-75 weldin/cofferdam is machined from 316L stainless steel or 5083 aluminium which is Lloyds 3.2 certificated. Fitted with a toughened flat lens the LED beam angle is 100 degrees , perfect for running down the side of a yacht as well as along the stern. Available in low and high powers up to 25,000 lumens in blue, white and RGB+W. This light also includes an internal ball adjustment for the LED which allows a universal 20 degree beam adjustment. A QTE-140 is now in final development, derived from the QTS-75 it has an insert diameter of 140mm which is welded flush to the hull and allows larger beam adjustment and a wider beam angle that will punch more light into the ocean.
Underwater Lights Ltd. also understand that some of their first boats, which still have the metal halide units installed, don’t want to upgrade to LED ‘as they still work’. They can still service these units with original parts such as O-rings, gaskets, lamp holders etc but the 150watt ballast and Philips MSD 150watt lamp have now been discontinued and they have very limited stock left after buying up all that they could. This has led them to encourage boats with the old metal halide system to upgrade to LED in the future.
They are now busier than ever, retrofitting all of their previous bulb projects with LED simply by removing the existing projector and ballast and replacing with the new LED projector and drivers – all possible whilst the boat is still in the water using the existing weldins. The underwater light for composite hulls you just remove the internal parts and replace with the LED heat sink which have integral driver for D.C power and remote for the high powered LED. The original hull fitting can be used and the installation can be carried out by the engineers onboard without drydocking the yacht
Underwater Lights Ltd. can also upgrade many of their competitor products. Captains often contact them to replace an existing, third party, system with their LED lights having used them on a previous boat with minimal issues, with 100% customer satisfaction and service. You can be assured that their service for maintaining the lights will continue for as long as the yacht is in service.
It is worth mentioning the importance of the classification societies and MCA. The detail required for class type approval has significantly increased in recent years. Structural drawings, electrical and mechanical test reports, workshop approval, and installation information are just some of the onerous benchmarks now required. Attending class surveyors always have the final say when it is a ‘Classed’ vessel, however, the flag of registration and their surveyors can have a say in all matters of construction and safety aspects and decide what is fit for purpose.

Multiplex offers high end solutions for the biggest yachts afloat. Their carbon boarding systems are second to none.
Making things simpler, lighter, easier and more convenient is part of the philosophy of multiplex. Founded in 1986, the creative think tank has developed swiftly but surely to become a global market leader in the field of boarding systems, offering top-quality products based on carbon fibre – gangways, ladders, railings, fender launch systems and awnings in the most exclusive design. As well as being supremely stylish, they have the properties that are needed on all yachts – they are lightweight, easy to handle and stow away and moreover they are absolutely rustproof and highly resistant to environmental influences such as salt water. Behind the scenes, a team of nearly 20 people works tirelessly in the R&D and design departments and, of course, in manufacturing. Custom solutions are not an exception at multiplex, but the standard. Designed and parameterizable with high end software, multiplex products are a guarantee for highest quality and absolute fitting accuracy. No other manufacturer of carbon equipment for superyachts offers this combination of services. This is one of the reasons why multiplex is considered the world market leader in this segment. Among other things, multiplex has equipped 80 of the world‘s 100 largest motor yachts to date and supply all the major shipyards around the globe.
The multiflap is light, stable and resistant to deformation. It is also weatherproof, which means that neither wind nor seawater can cause any harm. With a weight of 4.4 kg per metre and a quick, simple fixing system, it can be mounted and dismounted by a single person. The practical hinge system keeps storage space to a minimum.
Easy installation and less weight combined with elegant design let the sun awning system become a product which enjoys great popularity. Each sail is individually hand-made so it will suit perfectly the vessel’s outline. Miscellaneous paintings of the poles, several types of sailcloth, loud speakers and lights can personalize the systems according to taste.
The multiguard system is a railing made from pure carbon fibre, designed and shaped according to a client’s individual requirements. Despite its low weight the multiguard system can withstand a lateral pressure of up to 100 kilos and has been certified by Lloyds Register. As is standard with multiplex, the system is available in a free choice of colours with worldwide service.
Based on the multifender modular component system, all multifender systems are produced according to individual requirements. This means that we tailor the multifender to all imaginable conditions so that it can be used in absolutely every location. With responsible utilization, the multifenders are basically designed for vessels weighing up to 12 tons.
The multistair can be used for access over the side, or over the stern, directly into the cockpit. It can be swung 90 degrees from a fully horizontal to a fully vertical position, with all steps automatically aligning in parallel with the surface of the sea. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100% corrosion resistance.
The multiplex multiladder system is based on the multiplex typical carbon fibre compound construction system. The lightness of this ladder construction enables an easy and quick assembly and dismantling. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100 % corrosion resistance. Multiplex swim ladders are also characterised by optimum ergonomic features and need less space for stowage.
The ACYM has been in existence for a great many years and is without doubt the forerunner of every other charter yacht show around. The Antigua Show has evolved to embody all that charter yacht Agents, Captains and Crew require, enabling them to network together whilst experiencing the unique ambience that these extreme vessels have to offer, and indeed Antigua itself. The yachts on the dock in Antigua form the backbone of the Caribbean charter fleet and viewing is an essential cog in the wheel for any agent wanting to offer a vessel to a client with confidence, knowing that what he has seen, touched, heard and mentally experienced is the real thing, is up to date, and that the crew really are up to the tasks expected of them.
All of the major charter brokerage houses will be represented, Burgess, Camper & Nicholson, Fraser Yachts, Hill Robinson, Luxury Yacht Group, Morley Yachts, Nicholson Yachts, Northrop & Johnson, Ocean Independence, Worth Avenue Yachts, Yacht Zoo, Y.CO and several more.
The show will be spread over three marinas, Nelsons Dockyard, Antigua Yacht Club and Falmouth Harbour and there are many functions that will take place. The Concours de Chef Competition, the Superyacht Charities Sundowners Evening, The Welcome Cocktail Networking Evening, the daily Informative Hour, The Start of the Season Party, Antigua Yacht Club & Falmouth Harbour Marina Night, various Seminars, The Nelson Dockyard Marina Night, The ACYM After Show Mingle and to end the show yachts can take part in The Sail Day and take their favoured brokers for a short trip out on the water. Also, on this final day there will be a display of ‘Yachts for Sale’ that yacht brokers can view and present to their clients. There are also a wonderful variety of onboard events, private dinners and parties staged by the Crews themselves.
As the industry gradually regains its confidence, it is felt that the 2023 Antigua show will return with more yachts, many more it is hoped, that will offer visiting brokers impressive viewing and networking opportunities. Above all this will allow them to recommend, with full confidence, those yachts that they discover here in Antigua to their clients, that is what a Charter Yacht Meeting is all about!
As mentioned above, one of the exceptional events that will take place during the show will be the 23rd edition of the ‘Concours de Chef and Table Scaping Competition.’ Antigua was the first venue to ever feature a Chefs competition and has set the standards in so many areas that other charter shows continue to follow.
For those Chefs and interior crew that have entered these contests over the years there have been many tears shed, mostly of joy, after all who would not want to win one of the several categories on offer, it is a CV in itself. For a yacht and its crew to participate takes a great deal of confidence and for those representing their yacht, winning will not only create a moment of great pride at the awards, but also a memory that will stay with them for ever.
Looking at this from a charter brokers perspective, to sell charters a yacht has to be special and fit exactly into the prospective client’s remit, and that remit will no doubt include the words, ‘Great Cuisine and Service.’ The Chef’s competitions were created to showcase exactly that, the culinary prowess of a yachts Chef and the capabilities and artistic prowess of Stewards and Stewardesses that serve at table.
Many Chefs have become famous within the industry for their cooking skills and imagination by winning at the Antigua Charter Yacht Show, it is an event famed throughout the industry. Over the years the competition has had many themes for the entrants to contend with. The 2023 event is focused on ‘Global Cuisine Inspirations’ as yacht Chefs are assumed to have travelled extensively and gained inspiration from this, with a caveat, in obeyance to our modern world, of ‘Sustainable Products’. It is the Chefs interpretation of this and his cooking talent that will be judged. The five experienced Judges will be noting the visual appeal of the dishes served, with each of three dishes representing a different country. The taste, the creativity in presentation, cooking techniques and originality will be noted. Extra points will be awarded for Caribbean flare, the use of sustainable products and the ease to which the dishes can be oriented towards guests on special diets, gluten and lactose free, vegetarian etc.
Working closely with the Chef and his unique creations will be the Stewards and Stewardesses, without whom the table would be nothing but a barren landscape. Using their experience, imagination and in many instances, techniques honed over many years, these talented individuals will be expected to craft a table to frame the six servings, each of three courses, created in the galley. Again, knowing from where the dishes originate, and using sustainable products, the design for the table has to be able to catch the imagination of those judges by its appearance and presentation, creativity, originality and overall Impression.
The three dishes have to be served in a time frame of 30 minutes, exceed this and points will be deducted.
Is it easy, no, is it worth it, yes. Winning creates a great asset to the many agents that watch the results annually with great interest, enabling them to relay the news to their gourmet clients with no doubt in their minds.
The fleet is split into three categories, below 125ft, between 126ft and 159ft and over 160ft. A yacht can win ‘Best Chef’ and another in the same category ‘Best Tablescape’.
On the evening of the 8th December the awards will take place at the iconic Admirals Inn in front of massed ranks of jubilant crew and agents, where the winners are announced and the many prizes awarded from the sponsors of the event.
In addition, there is also the CYBA Going Green Committee competition that will recognize the environmentally friendly protocols that the captains and crew have adopted on their yachts, and the Designer Water Awards for desalinated water that the crew flavor with natural ingredients such as fruits, vegetables and herbs and serve to brokers at the show and guests while on charter. All done with a focus on reducing amount of single-use plastic generated within our industry.
To bring your yacht along, or attend as a broker or vendor please contact: acym@antiguayachtshow.com or visit www.antiguayachtshow.com
The entity that would evolve to be the STERLING Lacquer Manufacturing Company was founded in 1907 as the Morris Mayer Company before becoming the Mitchell Mayer Company when brothers Leo J. Mitchell, born 1895, and John W. Mitchell, born 1888, joined the company. During 1937 it again changed name to the STERLING Lacquer Manufacturing Company, reflecting its entry into the development and production of Nitrocellulose lacquer coatings. In 1937, STERLING moved to a location in the central part of St. Louis, Missouri, and remained there until 1961 before another move to Brannon Avenue, its current location, in the southwestern part of the city. Leo’s uncle, Leo, died unexpectedly in 1945, after which John became the president of the company.
STERLING’S current president, Leo V. Mitchell, worked in the plant at an early age, on Saturdays, school holidays and during summer vacations, but he had always held an ambition to fly and was accepted into the U.S. Naval Aviation Flight program in Pensacola, Florida, in July 1955. After completing two years of study at St. Louis University, Leo spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Navy pilot, during which time (1958) his father died. He was in a squadron which flew a P2V land-based, long-range patrol aircraft built by the Lockheed Aircraft company. After four years of active duty, Leo returned to St. Louis University to complete his studies and remained in the Naval Reserves for an additional 10 years. Leo began working at STERLING part-time while completing his studies in December 1961. Upon graduation, he began working full-time in various capacities, including laboratory, manufacturing, purchasing, and sales. In 1968 he became the president of STERLING Lacquer Manufacturing Company and has continued in that capacity to this day. The business traditionally offered general industrial coatings, air-dry, and force-dry finishes of all types for industrial equipment, power tools, farm instruments, and consumer products.
In 1965, a two-component Aliphatic Polyurethane, combined with a Polyester resin was introduced into the U.S. by a large German firm, Farbenfabriken Bayer, from Leverkusen.
STERLING was one of only a very few early paint manufacturers to see the possibilities for highquality, durable aircraft and marine coatings that could withstand all types of environmental issues. They also recognized early that these were ideal raw materials for aviation, marine, railroad, and other markets needing long-term durability and resistance to all types of weather and chemicals
STERLING decided to pursue the aircraft market first, as the company had a big interest in aviation. Trans World Airlines (TWA) were the first major airline to test Sterling’s material and after a sixmonth test on a Boeing 727, on January 1, 1966, was accepted as the supplier for the exterior coating systems on TWA aircraft. Subsequently, Sterling obtained contracts to supply amongst others, Delta, United Airlines, and Eastern Airlines. The company also introduced these types of high-performance coatings into the US and Canadian railroad industry for use on locomotives and cabooses. In its aerospace coatings market STERLING also supplies support coatings for aircraft manufacturers such
as Lockheed, Boeing, Beech, and Cessna, plus companies in a number of other countries including Europe and the far East. STERLING also entered the pleasure marine market in the U.S. and Europe.
In 1985, STERLING acquired a marine distributor, CP Systems, located in Boom, Belgium. At that time, the name was changed to STERLING Europe N.V. STERLING became interested in CP Systems because of their highly qualified team which had been marketing, distributing, and offering technical advice for the application of these new, high-performance polyurethane coatings to their clients.
STERLING has grown to specialise in aircraft, marine, and exterior coatings for structures where extreme resistance to weather and chemicals is critical. STERLING has qualified its primers and polyurethane topcoats to meet U.S. Military specifications for aircraft use.
The first major yacht project in Europe that used STERLING products was the 54-metre Motor Yacht Stefaren, (now Maridome) when under construction in 1986 in Lowestoft, England. After the successful completion of that build, STERLING’S marine coatings were successfully introduced throughout Europe, mainly into the UK, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, and Greece.
STERLING Linear Polyurethane Coatings, Primers and Fairing Compounds form the nucleus of a set of superyacht coating systems that are used worldwide and need to cope with the many diverse construction materials now being used in yacht building. These include steel, aluminium, wood, composites, plastics and even stainless steel and anodized aluminium.
STERLING Polyurethane Finishes are state-of-the-art coatings for marine, aviation and industrial applications that have evolved through many years of development, testing and refined manufacturing. The result is without doubt, for yachts, one of the most advanced coating systems on the market, one that not only copes with the many surfaces it is designed to protect, but also all that nature can throw at it as the vessel cruises the world’s oceans.
STERLING’S enviable “wet look” finish is the standard for many discriminating owners and captains, a finish that can be brushed or sprayed to give equivalent mirror-like results. Years of trouble-free, low maintenance service, coupled with excellent repair and touchup qualities, make STERLING the applicators choice as well, with application forgiveness an added bonus.

The ULTRAGREAM range of microfibre products is an exclusive blend of high-performance cleaning fibres which perform in all areas of the yacht under dry conditions, or with suitable cleaning products for an exceptional finish.
Technical MACROfibre is manufactured from 100% recycled plastic bottles and is designed to clean hard and textured surfaces mechanically by agitating tiny particles of dirt and debris from the target surface with water alone. MACROfibre has been independently tested and found to be many times less abrasive than other deep cleaning products on the market giving our customer complete confidence when used on-board for the cleaning of valuable surfaces.
In line with our environmental commitments, all Deeply Clean Marine products achieve excellent cleaning results with water only, preventing the need for harmful chemicals that could ingress into our precious seas and oceans.
All Deeply Clean Marine cleaning fabrics carry a 350wash cycle guarantee, and if you are not 100% satisfied with the performance simply return the product to us and we will replace*
We run an extensive customer support service with product recommendations, handy tips, and areas for use schedules that are available to download.

AC DC ENERGY was founded in 1998 by Christine Keating who now has more than 40 years of experience within the yachting world.
AC DC ENERGY provides specialized services in marine lighting. In those early days this mainly involved replacement lightbulbs, lightfittings for the exterior and interior and all lighting accessories. The lightbulb was the bain of all engineers lives as there were so many different types on board and Christine quickly acquired the knowledge to take that load off their shoulders. Christine was then known affectionately as the Lightbulb Lady and even though today she mainly deals in Worldwide Consulting, Refits etc., the name Lightbulb Lady has stuck.
AC DC ENERGY, over the past 25 Years, has worked hand in hand with many of the world’s leading lighting manufacturers and experts on new developments and the sourcing of hard to find products. The company has also assisted many parties to enable them to keep abreast of the rapid evolution and deployment of LED lighting, techniques and products. They have consulted with yachts worldwide, offering advice on small or large projects as vessels convert to LED.
The advice and co-ordination offered on any lighting project, be it on a small or large vessel, power or sail, and always being on-hand to keep engineers informed, or up to date on any possible delays or problems, can make life on board a yacht far less stressful than it needs to be. Many of the largest yachts in the world can vouch for the professionalism eminating from AC DC ENERGY and have fully appreciated the service on offer.
• CONSULTING – Co-ordination on a vessels lighting needs.
• REFIT – Engine rooms, deck heads- exterior & interior, reading lights, LED strip lights etc.
• NEW BUILDS – Providing lighting spares & parts, even those that are hard to find.
• BESPOKE SOLUTIONS – When necessary.
• PLUG & PLAY – Lightbulbs, tubes etc.
• LIGHTING SPARE PARTS – Power supplies, dimmers, light plates, plugs etc.
• AND OF COURSE – Light bulbs.
If you need help or advice simply contact AC DC ENERGY who will be very happy to help.

With four decades fully immersed in the maritime industry in naval-military, super-yacht operation, refit-and-repair, yacht-management, charter, yacht-technology, and yacht brokerage, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca brings to the maritime industry a mature and acute vision and focus.
Initially trading under the Just World Leisure banner in the early 2000s – providing yachtcharter, hospitality, and brokerage services – Just & Co has recently concentrated more specifically on technological innovations in both yacht communications and internet-atsea requirements, and on the research-and-development and promotion of new naval architecture hull-form applications.
Recognising the limited evolution of hull-design concepts over the decades – and resulting lack of ‘sea-comfort’ in smaller boats - a collaboration and partnership was formed during the past 20 years with the Icelandic-based team behind the invention of the revolutionary ‘ÖK Hull Technology’ – the company RAFNAR ehf. This has in recent years lead to the expansion of the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, which Just & Co represents from Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
The revolutionary RAFNAR boats and their unusual ‘ÖK Hull’ provide the ability to travel long distances at sea in unique comfort in ‘displacement mode’, at high speed; with little fatigue and stress encountered for guests, crew, or the actual boat. Prime importance is placed upon ‘Keeping Comfort at Sea’, durability, reliability, and safety – allowing a softer and more efficient ride and experience at sea, and a very significant decrease in uncomfortable ‘bounce-and-slam’.
In 2020, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca was very proud to welcome their trusted Mediterranean partners Aquamarine Ltd of Turkey into the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, with Aquamarine Ltd carrying the banner as ‘RAFNAR Turkey’. They jointly announced the construction and official launch of the first ‘RAFNAR 1100 Cabin Explorer’ yacht-tender built in Turkey, in late 2021. The relationship expanded in 2022 to incorporate
VN Maritime Technologies of Tuzla/ Istanbul – where RAFNAR Turkey are now constructing and producing their craft.
VN Maritime Technologies and Aquamarine Ltd are highly respected Turkish-based super-yachting, vessel construction, and maritime services companies, combining as members and partners within the global RAFNAR Maritime boat production group, working closely with Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca.
The current RAFNAR Maritime design-portfolio covers service-and-support craft from 8,5m to 12m, with additional new designs of 15m, 17m, and 24m Rafnar support and leisure vessels soon to be introduced to the range. These craft vary in design, from purpose built super-yacht Explorer/ Transporter RIBs and Open support-tenders, to Search-and-Rescue and Coast-guard Patrol-RIBs. Ruggedness and functionality can be balanced with customized luxury features and styling.
As RAFNAR Maritime Licensee, Distributor, and build-consultant in Palma de Mallorca, Just & Co, is providing a Mediterranean base for consultation and delivery of the RAFNAR/ÖK Hull craft. Says Anthony Just, founder and CEO of Just & Co: ‘We are immensely proud to be a partner and salesagent consultant for this new series of RAFNAR boats that are being constructed at VN Maritime Technologies / RAFNAR Turkey under our joint keen-eyed supervision and direction - for both the local Turkish and Mediterranean markets, and for broader international markets.’

The PYA is the international non-profit organisation that represents professional yacht crew around the world. With members in over 90 countries, its mission is to promote high standards of qualification, skills and knowledge amongst professional yachting personnel, training providers, and through the professional Yachting industry generally.
All PYA members are entitled to our confidential Membership Assistance Service (MAS). Last year, this service dealt with some 400+ cases, covering issues such as non-payment of salaries, unfair dismissal, contract issues, working practices and non-compliance of the Seafarers Employment Agreement at advice@pya.org. We also recently opened a welfare support for harassment, bullying, and mental wellbeing at welfare@pya.org. The MAS gives you peace of mind knowing we are here to listen, help and have your back.

Never feel lost at sea again!
SuperyachtCaptains.com is an exceptional online platform where professional Captains meet to exchange thoughts, ideas, product information, crew, destinations, experiences etc. in privacy. It allows both open and private discussion and also allows the members to contact and keep in touch with each other 24/7, wherever they happen to be – globally.
With over 2,000+ approved members, and growing, the site has, over the years, offered up an incredible amount of help and advice that can be found nowhere else to Captains seeking information. Much of this information is held within its encyclopaedic store of over 35,000 searchable posts. If it cannot be found a quick post will almost certainly get the answers.
To join is simple, apply through the login page, all applications are checked and, if approved, passcodes etc will be forwarded to the applicant. This process has over the years helped to build a membership of qualified Captains that have respect for each other and the industry that they serve.
Membership is free. With approximately 3,000 visits per month from the members the site is unique. If you are a working Captain, a retired Captain, a Captain managing one yacht for an Owner or a Captain between jobs you are welcome to apply. The site is not for Captains that have left the oceans and work shoreside for large companies.
