DACE Student Receives Service Award Superintendent Adkins announces Todd Prater, an 8th grade student at Duff-Allen Central Elementary School, has been honored by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award . The program recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Todd is the founder of Essentials for Santa, a community service project that collects pillows, blankets, socks, and hygiene items for the Dumas Rescue Community Outreach Christmas Program. Since 2016, Essentials for Santa has collected over 6,000 items that have been distributed to children in Floyd County. Superintendent Adkins says, “The board members and I want to congratulate Todd, but we aren’t surprised. Todd’s volunteerism and sense DACE Principal Halbert, Todd & Supt. Adkins. of community responsibility is an example for the nation.” Adkins continues, “We have recognized Todd for his community service as well as his performance in several extra and co-curricular activities and it’s because Todd follows through and gets the job done, even when there are challenges along the way.” Todd is the 14-year-old son of Jeff and Cecilia Prater of Hueysville, Kentucky.

Rogers Scholar Congratulations Cameron Morrison, Rogers Scholar! Rogers Scholars must be sophomores in the 45 county service area and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students should have a desire to develop their leadership and technology skills as well as entrepreneurship and community service. Initially, one student per county is selected and then 15 students with the highest sores earned in the scoring process are selected. Adkins comments, “Congratulations Cameron on being selected as Floyd County’s representative for the 2020 Rogers Scholar program. Cameron is currently a sophomore at Floyd Central High School, a member of the National Honor Society and plays basketball for the Jaguars.” Adkins continues, “Cameron, as a Rogers Scholar, is scheduled to attend a five-day program this summer and have sessions in building leadership skills, working with professionals in engineering, healthcare and video production, and participating in team-building exercises. Being a Rogers Scholar gives Cameron access to scholarships at seventeen Kentucky colleges and universities.”s. Adkins concludes, “Cameron will be fantastic representative for Floyd County in the Rogers Scholars programs. He’s a great examples of our students excelling and stepping out in these uncertain times. We may not be having in person classes but our students are still shining.” *For more information on Rogers Scholars, visit https://centeryouthprograms.com/rogers-scholars/

Congratulations to our 2020 Rogers Explorers. These amazing students will have the opportunity to learn, meet new friends and experience a glimpse of life on a college campus before they begin high school. Adkins comments, “Usually, the top two students from each county in the service area are chosen to be Rogers Explorers. Then, the next highest 120 scoring applicants are selected so having 6 from our district is wonderful. These students will work on math, science, and technology and develop their leadership skills. Community service is also part of this program.” Adkins concludes, “We are very proud of these students. During these unprecedented times, we easily see the great need for the skills that our students can develop and tweak as Rogers Explorers.” At this time we do not have any information on how COVID 19 may impact the Rogers Explorers program. *For more information on Rogers Scholars, visit http://centeryouthprograms.com/rogers-scholars/

Covid-19 changed a lot in our lives quickly. One thing it did not change is the work we do for our kids! Staff meetings and PLCs continued with Zoom meetings. Instruction continued digitally and with hard copies. Kentucky.com even did an article about the great things that were happening in Floyd County and at BLE during this time. Mr. Parsons, principal at BLE, gave a GREAT interview!!!

March has brought some opportunities to school systems across the nation. From the superintendent, to teachers, to cafeteria workers, we have all had to adjust the way we run business. From jumping on buses to deliver food and NTI packets, to doing live videos (pictured left) via Facebook, Team Floyd County has really pulled together to do “what is best for kids.
On March 10th, the freshmen class visited Upike and the Appalachian Wireless Arena and had a fun lunch at Gattis sponsored by GearUp.

So many schedules and events have been disrupted during the COVID19 pandemic. One major event that Floyd Central Jaguars have to miss out on this month is the 2nd Annual Cultural Field Exchange with Narrative Four. This event had students from The Bronx coming to Floyd County to spend a week and engaging in some incredible activities. This year, internationally acclaimed author, Ishmael Beah was going to be among the guests. Being ever resilient, the Narrative 4 students have been on Zoom meetings to connect with each other. While they cannot be together physically, they are still continuing the fantastic work this program is doing.
We salute our Daily Warriors. Thank you for providing meals for our kids.
On the last regular NTI day, the Faculty at FCHS participated in a heartfelt story exchange led by Narrative 4 Leaders, Mary Slone, Melissa Caudill, and Michelle Martin-Sullivan.
Floyd Central High School and Floyd County Schools were represented at the Family Resource and Youth Services Coalition of Kentucky , Inc.’s Legislative Page Day on March 12, 2020! Madison Thornsberry was appointed a Personal Page for Senator Johnny Ray Turner. She also had the privilege of meeting with Representative Ashley Tackett Laferty to discuss current events and her future aspirations, as well as receiving a special visit and message from Governor Beshear.
