Bobcats Archery Right: Kaytlyn Patrick and Erin Akers shot in the Blackcat Christmas Shootout. Kaytlyn Patrick ranked 3rd in all females and Erin Akers ranked 5th in all females. The team pictured below was 3rd in the tournament.

BLHS delivered a Christmas book for each student in the feeder schools (BLES and JMS) as a Christmas gift with help through the Striving Readers grant. Each student was able to have a book to read at home over the Christmas break.

THANK YOU Teach For America for giving backpacks and school supplies to every middle school student at John M Stumbo Elementary!



South Floyd Elementary Students K-8 enjoyed and succeeded in Hour of Code challenges.

Middle School Cheerleaders hosted a supply drive for the Floyd County Animal Shelter.

Mrs. Slone’s First Grade is using Flipgrid to communicate with other students on how to analyze the plot of different texts.


Arick Hall was awarded Outstanding Speaker award for his ability to debate bills at the conference.

7th and 8th Grade KYA Members in Frankfort, Dakota Madden was awarded the KY. Outstanding Doorkeeper award which is granted to the parliamentarian who does the best job at the conference.

Kentucky Youth Assembly

Raygan Bates, Madison Sullivan, and Taylor Stumbo were the first time bill authors and their bill passed in The House and Senate. They also presented their bill to our Lt. Governor.

Emily Spears, Taylor Allen, and Chloe Hall were bill authors ranked highly within the competition. They were given the opportunity to present their bill in the Capitol.


Early Childhood SPARK for Early Childhood Education SPARK, which stands for Supporting Parents to Assure Ready Kids, is a school readiness event sponsored by our local CECC providing resources and support to families of children 0 to 5 years of age. Over 100 children and their families participated in the November SPARK event held at the Eastern Branch Library. The children and their families had the opportunity to create a gingerbread house, stocking, ornament, and have a professional photo taken with Santa. Special thank you to volunteers and supporters: KET, Photographer, Mandy Stumbo, Floyd Co. 4-H & Carl D. Perkins Job Corp.


Early Childhood C is for Cookie Stacy Paige, Head Start Teacher at DACE, hosted a holiday cookie decorating event for her families. Everyone had a sweet time creating and designing their own unique holiday cookie.


Early Childhood Holiday Surprise Hundreds of early childhood students in Floyd County had a lot to cheer about on Thursday, December 5th. Preschool and Head Start students received a shoe box ďŹ lled with various goodies for Christmas thanks to a generous donation of the Sinking Fork Baptist Church and Pastor Mike Humphries located in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Members of the church visited each classroom handing out the gifts and reading a special holiday story to students.


Early Childhood All Aboard! The Polar Express Families had a chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy a special viewing of the Polar Express sponsored by the Floyd County Community Early Childhood Council. Participants were treated to pizza donated by Garrett Fountain and ARH and beverages were provided by Coca-Cola. Every child that attended received a bag full of goodies. And a free copy of the book, Polar Express, sponsored by the DACE family resource center.

Christmas Story Stroll Families joined the Floyd County Community Early Childhood Council in downtown Prestonsburg on December 7 th to participate in the Christmas Story Stroll. Several business had pages of the book, Pete the Cat Saves Christmas, displayed in their window. Families stopped at participating businesses to read the pages and received free goodies and treats. At the end of the story stroll, families headed back to the library where they warmed up with some cookies, cocoa, and a fun holiday craft. Thank you to the following business for their support and donations: Lou's Place for Pets, The Mountain Muse, Little Rascals, Ritchie's Hallmark, Lad ' N ' Lassie, Wildfire Designs, Sugar Magnolias, City Perk, You, Me & Pottery, Sew ' N ' Love, and Daffodil's. Thank you Mayor Les Stapleton for being our guest story stroll reader and the City of Prestonsburg Police for helping us safely cross the streets! Thank you Floyd County Library for the use of your facility. Great time was had by all!


Early Childhood Feeling Crafty The Floyd County Policy Committee members will ring in the holiday season with a snowman themed wind chime. Andrea Slone, family and consumer science agent, and the local homemakers group (Kaye Allen) sponsored the holiday craft at the December meeting. Each member present made a terra cotta pot snowman wind chime.
