Teaching the Value of Public Service Student poster contest through April 10 Theme: "Making A Difference" You are invited to participate in the 2020 Public Service Recognition Poster Contest! This year's theme, "Making A Difference," should be expressed through art. Those in public service - police officers, teachers, social workers and many others work for a greater purpose: To serve their community and improve the lives of Kentuckians everyday. Help us celebrate our public servants by encouraging our youth to submit their colorful works of art! Judging categories: I. Ages 6-9 II. Ages 10-13 III. Ages 14-18 Prizes for each category First place - $50 Second place - $25 Third place - $10 Participants are not eligible to win in the same age category in consecutive years. Entries must be postmarked by April 10, 2020.

All winners will receive an invitation to an award ceremony with Governor Andy Beshear at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort on May 8. It’s been 20 years since a Floyd County Schools’ Quick Recall team has advanced to state competition …until now. Superintendent Danny Adkins talks about the results from the 15th region Governor’s Cup competition for Floyd County Schools commenting, “Congratulations Floyd Central High School Quick Recall team! We’ve done some checking and learned that it’s been 20 years since a Floyd County Schools’ high school quick recall team has advanced to state level so we are especially proud of this team and their coaches Michelle Martin-Sullivan, Robert Sullivan and Haley Dyer.” Region 15 consists of Betsy Layne HS, Floyd Central HS, Prestonsburg HS, Belfry HS, East Ridge HS, Johnson Central HS, Martin County HS, Paintsville HS, Phelps HS, Piarist HS, Pike County Central HS, Pikeville HS, and Shelby Valley HS. The Kentucky Association for Academic Competition (KAAC) is the governing body for this competition.

Who goes to state? 1st & 2nd place teams in Quick Recall Top 5 in each content and any student who scores 40+

Adkins talked about the three individuals going to state having something in common. Adkins says, “While Lindsay Caudill, Kade Scott and Tabitha Mitchell represent different high schools, all three are students in our Floyd County Early College Academy! The program was designed for gifted students who were ready for a modified version of college and these three definitely fit that description.”

Adkins comments, “Congratulations Lindsay, 1st in Language Arts, and Tabitha, 3rd in Composition! Congratulations Kade, 2nd in Arts & Humanities, and tied for 3rd in the state!” Adkins ended saying, “Please join us in wishing the Quick Recall team and these individuals the best of luck at state!” State Governor’s Cup Competition will be March 14-16 at the Galt House in Louisville. In early February, Chantal Sargent, Savannah Price, and Nadaleigh Lester, auditioned and were selected for the Morehead State University Band Clinic. Chantal has been selected all four years of high school and Savannah was selected for two years in a row. This was Nadaleigh’s first audition. Congratulations, ladies.

Special thanks to the FCHS ARCHERY assistant coaches Sheila McKinney and Jodi Terry and a few of our loyal parents for all your help this season.


58th District Basketball Congratulations to the Lady Jags finishing as District Tourney Runners Up and Conference Champs. Grace Martin, Jada Johnson, Brook Stumbo, Kamryn Shannon, and Kennedy Harvel all were named to the All-Conference team with Katie Jo Moore being named Conference Player of the Year. Seniors, Brandon Little, and Blake Slone were named to the Boys’ All-Conference Team. The Lady Jags will continue post season play Friday night, March 6th, at the Expo Center in the Semi-Finals of the 15th Regional Tournament. Upcoming Dates from the Music Dept. Early Childhood Transitions Supports and Resources Ten early childhood staff members attended a training focused on students with autism sponsored by the Ashland Regional Training Center. The autism training was lead by Kim Howard from the Kentucky Autism Training Center at the University of Louisville. Participants were provided evidence based information to help develop effective transition strategies for students with autism spectrum disorders.

Early Childhood New Preschool Teacher at Prestonsburg Elementary Jessica Williams will be joining our Early Childhood family as the Head Start /Preschool Teacher at Prestonsburg Elementary. Ms. Jessi earned her IECE Degree in Early Childhood from Morehead State University. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Elementary Education through the University of the Cumberlands. During her free time, she enjoys being outdoors, camping, and riding her horse.

Early Childhood Floyd Little Scholars Academy Floyd County Schools recognizes transitioning a child to kindergarten is a process for the entire family, therefore, we are excited to begin a FREE School Readiness transition program for children who are currently 4 years of age, will be 5 years of age by October 1, 2020, and have no Preschool, Childcare, or Head Start experience. The academy will be 2 Saturdays a month in March, April, May, June, and July at Allen Elementary School 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. These sessions will focus on your child’s development in cognitive, physical, social emotional skills, and school routines. KET and Parent Meetings During the month of February, Mary West from KET, presented during Head Start’s monthly parent meetings. Ms. West shared various resources and apps developed by KET and PBS kids. After the meeting, caregivers went to the classroom and completed a special craft with their child.
