MANAGERS NOTES

I’m very pleased with the performances over the season and how the team is gelling and progressing on the pitch.

Firstly, we would like to start by welcoming all the Green Army and fans who have travelled to support Clapton to Kimberley Stadium for today’s Women’s FA Cup 3rd Round Tie.

We have worked hard in training this week and looked to focus on the areas we need to continue to improve on as a team, but this group of players are fantastic to work with, and the team spirit is still excellent.

I would like to congratulate Clapton on a fantastic cup run that highlights that the FA Cup’s magic is well and truly alive.

We are coming into this game as favourites, but we aren’t underestimating Clapton and have prepared well to get the job done today. The girls are focused on getting another positive result in the cup.

We come into today’s game on the back of a negative result against London Bees but a positive performance. I’m still baffled how we didn’t get anything out of the game last weekend. We had 70% of the ball and had 15 shots on goal to London Bees 4 and managed to come away empty-handed. I’m very pleased with the performances over the season and how the team is gelling and progressing on the pitch, but we need to start adding points on the board in the league. We have had a positive run in the FA Cup, beating Keynsham and St Austell comfortably. These games could have been more comfortable if we hadn’t made some individual errors, but this is something we need to stop happening. The FA Cup has been a welcome distraction from the league, and we want to continue our journey in this year’s competition.

We are pleased again to have another academy player coming into the squad today in Tiana Campbell, who joins Rosie Train and Lucy Hack, who have come through our youth system in recent years and highlights the abundance of talent coming through the ranks at the club. I also want to mention Mari Ward from our Under 16’s who played for England this week and will be joining the Women’s set up when she’s 16 in January and highlights what we are trying to build at this club. Thanks for your support as always, and we hope to give you another exciting and positive performance and result.

Thanks, Ryan Perks - First Team Manager

Getting to know...

Panagiota Papaioannou A former Greek international defender, Panagiota Papaioannou, or Giota as she is more commonly known, has been a stalwart of Argyle’s defence over the last few years. Having stuck with the club during the Covid hit campaign of last season and playing in the Devon FA Women’s County Cup final, Giota returned to Argyle after missing the first few games of the season due to being away in Greece. Giota is an assured central defender, comfortable playing in both a back four or more commonly this season in either the right

or centre of Argyle’s back three. An aggressive and committed defender, Giota is not afraid of a tackle and is the type of player to put her body on the line to help her teammates. Giota’s season so far has been disrupted by a few minor injuries preventing her from playing in as many games as she could, but when fully fit, Giota is likely to be a key player for Argyle. Giota is sponsored by Plymouth Argyle Supporters Association, London Branch..

match report

Argyle 0.3 London Bees Sunday 5th december 2021, 14:30 Manadon Sports & Community Hub

Plymouth Argyle Women will be wondering how they lost 3-0 after dominating the game against London Bees. Argyle started well and worked the first opportunity in the 15th minute. A loose ball fell to Zoe Cunningham 25 yards from goal, but her volley just didn’t dip enough and rattled the Bees’ crossbar. Then in the 33rd minute, Argyle created the best chance of the first half. The Bees cleared an Argyle free-kick, but the Pilgrims recycled the ball and worked it out to Knapman, who picked out strike partner Gabi Alphous in the 6-yard box, but her shot was straight at Hazelton.

Argyle were punished for not taking their chances in the 35th minute as London Bees took the lead against the run of play. A long hopeful ball was played in behind the Argyle defence, and a miscommunication between defence and goalkeeper allowed Bell to nip in behind past Soper and roll the ball into an empty net. The 2nd half continued like much of the first half, with Argyle seeing most of the ball and playing on the front foot. They nearly equalised in the 55th minute when Knapman won a header from a Train cross, but she could only direct it straight at Hazelton, who claimed and held the header. Then only two minutes later, Argyle conceded. Argyle played the ball out from the back, but a loose pass gave possession to London Bees, who played Wilson in behind who finished well past Soper in the Argyle net. Argyle continued to push forward once again, and worked the ball well to find Knapman one on one, but again Hazelton was quick off her line to close the angle and make the save to push Knapman’s shot wide. In the 77th minute Argyle appealed for a penalty after Knapman was thrown to the ground during a corner, but the ref waved played on and only a minute later, the Bees added a third goal. A miss-hit pass at the back gave the ball away to Heira, who played Wilson in through on goal, and she finished into the bottom corner to extend the Bees’ lead. Despite more Argyle pressure, the game finished 3-0 to London Bees. It was a tough result to take for Argyle, who, despite putting in arguably their best performance of the season, they somehow found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat.
